My party of 2 spent $165 to go to one of Dolly Parton's famous dinner shows, and it blew us away

Carly Caramanna

  • I attended one of Dolly Parton's famous dinner shows, Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud.
  • My party of two spent $165 on the multicourse, two-hour dining experience.
  • The dinner show was very entertaining, and our meal was delicious, making the price tag worth it.

During a recent visit to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, I checked out Dolly Parton's Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud show.

I'd been to her nearby Dollywood theme park many times while in the area β€” and Parton's other dinner shows β€” but this was my first time visiting this particular venue.

Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud is loosely based on the real-life feuding families from the 19th century. Operating since 2011, the two-hour experience features a live show and multicourse meal housed in an extravagant theater.

Adult seats start at about $60 each, though visitors can pay more for VIP perks. Reservations can be made online, over the phone, or in person at the box office.

I booked two adult tickets in advance for $135. Here's what the dinner show was like.

First, we explored the merchandise shop.
A bag of an at-home mix for the soup served at the "Hatfield and McCoy" dinner feud show next to a bowl with a spoon with the show's logo on it.
I bought an at-home mix and branded soup bowl from the merchandise shop.

Carly Caramanna

Before showtime, we walked around the venue's large merchandise shop. I'd heard about the dinner show's famous soup, so I couldn't resist purchasing an at-home mix and branded soup bowl.

Before heading into the theater, we also passed a bar selling alcoholic beverages, like moonshine cocktails.

The theater's seating setup offered great views all around.
A view of the theater stage with purple lighting and elevated areas with a bridge connecting them.
We could clearly see the stage from our seats.

Carly Caramanna

After we checked in, we were seated in the theater. The seating was stadium-style, meaning you could have a great view of the stage from just about any vantage point.

We were immediately greeted by our server, who offered unlimited Coca-Cola, tea, or coffee, included in the cost of the experience. Dinner was promptly served after.

The first course was the famous soup.
A table with a blue-and-white table cloth with soup served in a pot on a metal platter.
I was impressed by the creamy soup.

Carly Caramanna

I couldn't wait to try the show's famous starter, which is simply called the original creamy soup.

It was deliciously rich and savory without being too heavy.

The Southern-style main course was next.
Metal buckets with several items of food, including fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, corn, soup, and bread.
The main course featured large portions of each dish.

Carly Caramanna

The main course was a homestyle Southern meal featuring bread, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, buttered corn on the cob, fried chicken, and pulled pork. I couldn't believe how large the portions were.

Dairy-free, vegan, and gluten-free meals were also available by request.

The fried chicken was my favorite.

I also enjoyed the mashed potatoes that came with the fried chicken.

Carly Caramanna

I enjoyed everything but was especially impressed by the fried chicken, which was crisped to perfection with a juicy interior.

It ended up being my favorite of the main course, along with the extra creamy and garlicky mashed potatoes.

The show began after the meal and was extremely entertaining.
A man standing on stage in front of a red barn.
The show was extremely elaborate.

Carly Caramanna

The elaborate stage was impressive, featuring water and fire elements, as well as a 24-foot-deep diving pool.

The show, which featured dozens of talented performers, was engaging and funny. It also had pyrotechnics, stunts, dancing, and live music.

At the time of booking, diners choose which side they'd like to be seated on, either Hatfield or McCoy. So, the audience was split and encouraged to root for their respective side.

Overall, the content felt family-friendly, making it perfect for audience members of any age.

The meal ended with dessert.
A glass jar filled with pudding and whipped cream on a blue-and-white tablecloth.
I was glad the dessert was light after such a heavy meal.

Carly Caramanna

By the time we got to dessert, I was pretty full.

Still, the pudding and whipped cream were refreshingly light, which was perfect after a heavy meal.

I've been to Parton's other dinner shows, but this was my favorite.
Carly taking a selfie in front of a photo of Dolly Parton.
Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud was worth the $165 we spent to see it.

Carly Caramanna

I've dined at Parton's other shows, including Pirates Voyage and Dolly Parton's Stampede, but the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud show is now my favorite.

From the delicious food β€” especially that fried chicken β€” to the engaging entertainment, I thought it was worth the $165 price tag for two tickets.

I definitely recommend checking it out if you're in Pigeon Forge.

I tried Buffalo chicken wings from 5 major chains and the sauciest ones came out on top

17 December 2024 at 06:15

We tried Buffalo chicken wings from five well-known chain restaurants to determine a winner for football season.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • Casual-dining chains often capitalize on football season to draw in customers.
  • We tried Buffalo chicken wings from five chains to determine the best option for game day.
  • Wingstop surprised us with its saucy, juicy wings at the right price point.

As football season kicks off, restaurant chains are rolling out crowd-pleasing tailgate favorites to win over fans.

In a new series, "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting these chains against each other to uncover the best versions of popular game-day dishes.

Whether you're deciding which chain has the best chicken wings or offers the best value for delivery, this guide will help you make the most of your football season dining experience.

Buffalo chicken wings arguably reign supreme among the most popular game-day foods and are practically synonymous with football season.

A report by the National Chicken Council estimated Americans would eat 1.45 billion chicken wings during the 2024 Super Bowl. Many chain restaurants embrace wings' popularity all football season long with promotional deals, family-sized bundles, and free delivery.

Chains that specialize in chicken wings, such asΒ Wingstop, are also experiencing significant growth. In October 2024, the chain, which focuses its menu on bone-in chicken wings, boneless wings, and other chicken items, announcedΒ 38.8% year-over-year revenue growth.

Wingstop has also expanded its presence by opening 273 new locations across the US in the past year, bringing its total number of US restaurants to 2,064 at the end of the third quarter.

We ranked Buffalo chicken wings from five chain restaurants β€” Applebee's, Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, TGI Fridays, and Wingstop β€” based on taste and value.

Here's how the five chain restaurants' Buffalo wings ranked, from our least to most favorite.

My least favorite Buffalo wings came from TGI Fridays.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered an eight-count of bone-in traditional Buffalo wings at the restaurant I visited in Massachusetts. They cost $12.19, excluding taxes and fees, and came with celery sticks and sides of ranch and blue cheese.

I live in New York City, but I had to travel further afield to try the chain's wings because many of my local TGI Fridays restaurants have closed.

In early November, the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and Reuters reported that it was facing $37 million in debt, which led to some underperforming restaurants closing.

The TGI Fridays location I visited in Massachusetts is locally franchised and owned, so it's not included in the larger brand's bankruptcy filing.

The wings were crispy but a little under-sauced.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Unlike some of the other chains I tried, TGI Fridays also doesn't appear to make its own Buffalo sauce.

On the menu, it's advertised as simply Frank's Red Hot Buffalo. While I do like that brand of sauce, I could easily make the same wings at home, which made it feel less unique.

I also thought they were slightly smaller than some of the other wings I tried.

Business Insider reached out to TGI Fridays for comment but did not receive a response.

The meat inside was tender, but the Buffalo flavor just wasn't there.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Though I liked the crispy skin and texture of these chicken wings, as well as the tender meat inside, I thought they were lacking in sauce and flavor.

Overall, I probably wouldn't order these again.

The next stop I tried was Applebee's.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At my local Applebee's in Brooklyn, an order of nine classic bone-in wings costs $18.99, excluding tax and fees. They came with celery sticks and sides of ranch and blue cheese.

Applebee's partnered with the NFL this year as the league's official grill and bar partner after finding a major crossover between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider.

Since Buffalo wings are a favorite among football fanatics, I was excited to see how the chain fared.

The wings were super crispy and the largest out of all that I tried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The wings were a rich red-brown color and fried to a crisp.

The wings were juicy, and the sauce had a good buttery flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Buffalo sauce had a nice balance between the heat and the more savory, buttery flavor, making for a balanced bite. I thought the meat inside was pretty juicy, and I loved the sheer size of these wings.

My only real complaint was the price β€” $18.99 for a plate of wings felt pretty pricey, even though the wings were on the larger side. However, the price will vary depending on which location you visit.

Chili's landed squarely in the middle with its crispy Buffalo wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At the Massachusetts location I visited, an eight-count of bone-in Buffalo wings cost $14.99, excluding tax and fees. They came with two dipping sauces: ranch and blue cheese.

However, the wings cost slightly more, $17.99, at the Chili's location I typically visit in Queens, New York.

I thought these wings were flavorful and juicy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I've tried these wings before and commented that they could have been slightly saucier and crispier. However, when I tried them this second time, I didn't encounter those issues.

They were perfectly crispy and almost dripping in sauce.

The wings had a generous amount of meat inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Buffalo sauce had a strong buttery flavor with just the right amount of heat. The chain is also known for its ranch dipping sauce, which paired very nicely with the wings.

Though the wings were smaller, I thought they packed more flavor than the ones from Applebee's and TGI Fridays.

The second-best Buffalo wings came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chain's Buffalo bone-in wings are arguably Buffalo Wild Wings' most famous menu item, so I was eager to see how they would stack up against other chain restaurants' wings. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

I ordered a six-count of traditional Buffalo wings through the Buffalo Wild Wings app for $12.49, excluding tax and fees, and a side of ranch.

The wings were small length-wise but had a lot of meat on them.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The wings were crispy and had a light coating of Buffalo sauce that covered every part of the wings.

There was a selection of both drumsticks and flats, but I noticed that the drums were particularly meaty.

I loved the flavor of the Buffalo sauce and thought the chicken meat was moist.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chicken meat inside the wing was moist and tender, and the crispy skin and slightly sweet, just-spicy-enough sauce added a lot of flavor. Overall, these were really solid Buffalo wings.

I also thought these wings were a great value for the money and would definitely order them again.

My favorite wings I tried were from Wingstop.
wingstop original hot wings
Wingstop original hot wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered 10 classic bone-in wings for $17.29, excluding tax and fees.

Wingstop doesn't offer Buffalo sauce on its menu, but it does have its Original Hot sauce, which is the chain's version of Buffalo. I ordered them with a side of ranch.

The wings came drenched in the bright-red sauce but were still supremely crispy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sticky sauce clung to my fingers as I ate these wings, which were the perfect size: not too big, not too small, and just the right amount of tender chicken meat.

The meat was tender and the spicy hot sauce blew me away.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sauce had a lot of levels, balancing between a strong vinegar flavor, to buttery, and topped off with a layer of spice that was slightly smoky yet not overpowering.

The Wingstop wings stood out as the spiciest among all the chains I tried. However, the heat didn't overpower the flavor β€” instead, it enhanced it.

Each element, from the crispy seasoned skin to the tangy undertones of the sauce, came through distinctly. These wings balanced bold, spicy flavor with a depth of taste, making them the best chain-restaurant Buffalo wings I tried.

My family of 4 spent $344 on dinner at The Melting Pot, and we'd return to the fondue chain just for the experience

10 December 2024 at 08:28
Author Terri Peters smiling in front of The Melting Pot
Our meal at The Melting Pot cost over $300 after tax and a 20% tip but I think the experience was worth the price.

Terri Peters

  • My family of four dined at The Melting Pot, a fondue chain known for its melty cheese and chocolate.
  • Our four-course meal took two hours and included three rounds of fondue, a salad, and drinks.
  • We spent $344 after tax and a 20% tip, which felt worth it for the experience we had with our teens.

As a mom of two teens, I find it's becoming increasingly rare for my entire family of four to sit around a dinner table together.

My kids have their own social lives and busy schedules, but going out to eat as a family can still bring us all together. So, on a rare night when all of our calendars were open, we headed to The Melting Pot for a four-course fondue dinner.

My teens loved visiting the fondue chain when they were younger, though all I remembered about our previous visits was that the cheese was delicious and our dining experience took several hours.

With that in mind, we headed to our nearest location about 40 minutes from home in Melbourne, Florida.

Here's what it was like to dine at The Melting Pot with our two teens.

The Melting Pot got its start in Florida in the 1970s.
Table at the Melting Pot with utensils wrapped in napkins surrounding a hot plate built into the table
The Melting Pot is famous for its fondue.

Terri Peters

The Melting Pot first opened in Maitland, Florida, just outside Orlando in 1975. At the time, it sold just three fondues: Swiss cheese, beef, and chocolate.

Over time, the chain began serving more varieties of fondue, plus things like craft cocktails and salads.

As its menu grew, so did its reach. Today, The Melting Pot has almost 100 locations throughout the US and one in Canada.

We kicked off our fondue dinner with a few drinks.

My family enjoyed our specialty drinks.

Terri Peters

We started our meal at The Melting Pot with a round of drinks.

My husband chose an old-fashioned cocktail ($15), my daughter and I selected alcohol-free mixed drinks ($8 each), and my son ordered a soda ($5).

As someone who stopped drinking alcohol months ago, I was impressed with the restaurant's spirit-free menu, which went beyond Shirley Temples and club soda with creative options involving fresh ingredients.

Later in the meal, my husband had two $12 glasses of red wine, and I ordered an additional $8 alcohol-free drink from the bar.

Our server did a great job guiding us through how much to order.
Menu at The Melting Pot
The menu at The Melting Pot is filled with options.

Terri Peters

The menu at The Melting Pot can feel a bit overwhelming at first.

The chain does a great job organizing a few fondue-for-two meals at a pre-fixe price, but its Γ  la carte menu of separate cheese, entrΓ©e, and dessert courses can be hard to navigate with a larger party.

For example, the cheese course alone starts at around $30 for two people, but the cost goes up for additional diners or add-ons like charcuterie or gluten-free dippers.

Thankfully, our server helped us decide how much we needed to order so everyone got enough to eat without us having tons of leftovers.

The cheese fondue was melty perfection.

Our cheese came with apples, carrots, and other items for dipping.

Terri Peters

Our Alpine cheese-fondue course for four cost $56.

Alongside the cheese, which was a blend of gruyΓ©re, raclette, fontina, white wine, and garlic, we were served dippers like crusty bread, apples, and a blend of carrots, cauliflower, and broccoli.

This course was incredibly delicious. Having made fondue at home many times before, I can say having someone assemble the dish and clean it up afterward was well worth the price.

Plus, the portion was large enough that we could've been pretty happy ending our meal here.

I'd never ordered a salad at the Melting Pot, but was glad we did.

I'd get the spinach-and-blue-cheese salad again at The Melting Pot.

Terri Peters

Although salad is typically the last thing on my mind when a fondue spread is on the table, our server told us there was one on the menu he loved and suggested we order one to try.

His pick, the bacon-and-blue-cheese spinach salad ($8), came with spinach, hard-boiled eggs, bacon, tomato, and blue cheese. It was pretty incredible β€” so much so that I'd consider ordering it again the next time I visit The Melting Pot.

At our server's suggestion, we also shook a bit of the restaurant's garlic-and-wine seasoning on top. The flavorful blend added a lot to the already tasty salad.

The meat course was really good, but it didn't feel like a necessity.
Broth in metal fondue pot with uncooked meats next to it at The Melting Pot
We chose the coq-au-vin cooking style for our main fondue.

Terri Peters

For our entrΓ©e course, we chose the coq-au-vin cooking style, a yummy blend of burgundy wine, mushrooms, scallions, and garlic.

Since we were already a bit full from our cheese course and salad, our server suggested we split two entrΓ©es among the four of us.

We ordered the $34 Pacific Rim selection, which included proteins like shrimp, ahi tuna, and chicken, and the $38 classic, with meats like pork and steak.

We enjoyed cooking the proteins in our fondue, but the real star of the entrΓ©e course was the array of sauces paired with them. It was fun to taste the dips, which ranged in flavors from teriyaki to curry.

For dessert, we chose one of The Melting Pot's classics.
Fondue pot of dark and light chocolate designed to look like a yin-yang symbol with bananas, strawberries, and other treats for dipping next to it at The Melting Pot
The Melting Pot's yin-and-yang chocolate photographs nicely.

Terri Peters

To end our meal, we ordered the chain's yin-and-yang chocolate fondue for the table ($56).

The pretty mixture of white chocolate and dark chocolate made for some great photos and was a delicious way to try two flavors of fondue.

We were also able to add gluten-free dipping options.
Gluten-free brownies, cookies, bananas, strabwerries on platter next to chocolate fondue pot at The Melting Pot
I was glad we were able to get gluten-free brownie dippers at The Melting Pot.

Terri Peters

At the time of our visit, my daughter and I were on a special diet for medical reasons, so we asked for gluten-free dippers.

We were charged $8 for an extra plate with things like gluten-free brownies and cookies.

The extra cost was worth it, as she and I were able to fully enjoy the course without having to stick solely to dipping fruit into our melted chocolate.

We spent about two hours at the restaurant.
Terri Peters and her two teenagers and husband outside of The Melting Pot
The Melting Pot isn't the place to go if you want a quick meal.

Terri Peters

Although I remember previous dinners at The Melting Pot taking a long time, it only took us about two hours to move through cheese, salad, dinner, and dessert courses.

The experience felt perfectly timed: We could take as long as we wanted for each course but were readily ushered into the next one as soon as we were ready.

Our dinner at The Melting Pot felt worth the price, but we'd focus on cheese and chocolate next time.
Melting Pot fondue on hot plate surrounded by dippers, sauces, and drinks
The Melting Pot can get expensive, but we found value in our meal.

Terri Peters

Our meal cost $268 before tax and tip β€” a price that felt worth it for the food, service, atmosphere, and overall fondue-making experience.

For me, The Melting Pot's unique dining experience alone made this meal worth the cost. There aren't many restaurants where you can dine out while having the feeling of cooking together as a family.

My husband and I loved having our kids at the dinner table with us for a few hours. We had easy conversations as we all busied ourselves with picking up food and dipping it in cheese, broth, and chocolate.

Next time, though, we might save money by skipping the entrΓ©e course and only ordering cheese and chocolate fondue.

They were the highlights of our meal, and we'd have been plenty full with just those two courses. I'd still order that amazing spinach salad to go with them, though.

I tried chicken tenders from 5 major chain restaurants, and one emerged as the MVP

  • Casual-dining chains understand the importance of embracing football season to attract customers.
  • We tried chicken tenders from five chains to determine the best option for game day.
  • Chili's and Buffalo Wild Wings impressed us the most with their crispy and customizable tenders.

Football season is here, and restaurant chains are stepping up to serve crowd-pleasing tailgate favorites.

In a new series, "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting some of these chains against each other to determine which makes the best versions of popular game-day foods.

If you're wondering what to order the next time you catch the game at a local Chili's or Buffalo Wild Wings, or if you're uncertain which chain offers the best value when ordering in, this guide will help you make the most of your football season dining experience.

Chain restaurants know the value of embracing football season to attract customers, from offering family-style and game-night combos during football season to leaning into commercial advertising during televised games.

For the first edition of "Tailgate Taste-off," we ranked chicken tenders from five chain restaurants β€” Applebee's, Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, TGI Fridays, and Wingstop β€” based on taste and value.

Here's how the five chain restaurants' chicken tenders ranked, from our least to most favorite.

My least favorite chicken tenders came from Wingstop.
wingstop chicken tenders
Wingstop chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Founded in 1994 in Garland, Texas, Wingstop has grown a cult following over the years for its chicken offerings, from its wings to its recently released chicken sandwich, which has caught the attention of Gen-Z consumers.

Wingstop does have dine-in options, but I felt it was more authentic to the Wingstop experience to order in.

I ordered four crispy tenders plain with a side of honey mustard sauce from my local Wingstop in Brooklyn, New York, for $10.39, excluding tax and fees.

The chicken tenders had a thick layer of seasoned breading on the outside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered these tenders plain, but they also come in all of the chain's signature sauces, from lemon pepper to Buffalo. I liked the ability to customize my tenders according to my preferences.

The tenders paired well with the honey mustard, which was creamy and had an ideal level of tanginess. I also thought the classic breading had a nice amount of flavor and peppery seasoning.

However, I was disappointed by the amount of meat inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Each Wingstop tender had a different amount of juicy chicken meat, with some pieces being thicker and more satisfying than others. While the flavor was spot-on, I found myself wishing there was a bit more meat in each bite to really hit the mark.

These tenders would make a decent addition to a spread of wings from Wingstop, especially for folks turned off by spicy food.

Next time I order from Wingstop, I'll probably stick to their specialty: their wings.

Business Insider reached out to Wingstop for comment but did not receive a response before publication.

Applebee's, the NFL's official grill and bar partner, came in fourth with its crispy breaded chicken tenders.
applebees chicken tenders
Applebee's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I visited my local Applebee's in Brooklyn, New York, to try these chicken tenders.

Applebee's partnered with the NFL this year as the league's official grill and bar partner after finding a major crossover between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider, adding, "This season, we've been all in on the NFL."

Data collected by Applebee's in April showed that 64% of its guests were interested in or very interested in the NFL, and about 34% had watched the NFL in the last 12 months, which informed the chain's football season strategy, Yashinsky said.

While the chain is consistently lauded for its boneless wings, I haven't heard much about its chicken tenders.

At my location, the chicken tender plate typically costs $12.99, excluding tax and fees. However, I ordered them as part of the chain's "2 for $2X" deal, which also allowed me to get an order of boneless wings and a classic cheeseburger.

I was pretty disappointed by the size of these chicken tenders.
applebees chicken tenders
Applebee's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

They were really crispy, but slightly on the smaller side. The serving size of the honey mustard was also smaller than the Wingstop version.

However, unlike Wingstop, these chicken tenders came with a generous serving of fries, which I thought made this meal an excellent value.

These chicken tenders had a surprisingly good amount of chicken meat inside.
applebees chicken tenders
Applebee's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I appreciated the seasoning on the breading, which was a highlight since this chain serves its tenders plain without coating them in signature sauces like those available at Wingstop, Chili's, or Buffalo Wild Wings.

My only complaint, other than the smaller size of the chicken tenders, was justΒ howΒ fried they were. I thought the breading was a little overcooked, to the point that it left a dry, almost burned taste in my mouth.

However, this could have just been the batch I received and not standard for all Applebee's chicken tenders. I reached out to Applebee's about my experience, but they did not respond before publication.

Landing squarely in the middle of the ranking was TGI Fridays.
tgi fridays chicken tenders
TGI Fridays chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

TGI Fridays has run into financial trouble in recent months. In early November, the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, andΒ ReutersΒ reported that it was facing $37 million in debt, which led to some underperforming restaurants closing.

The TGI Fridays location I visited in Massachusetts is locally franchised and owned, so it's not included in the larger brand's bankruptcy filing.

I ordered a four-piece tender meal for $15.69, excluding tax and fees. It came with a side β€” I opted for mac and cheese β€” and honey mustard.

These chicken tenders were crispy without being over-fried.
tgi fridays chicken tenders
TGI Fridays chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

They still had the signature finger shape I typically look for in a chicken tender.

This honey-mustard dipping sauce was less creamy compared to the other chains I tried. However, I was mostly judging the chicken tenders on their own, not the sauces they came with.

The chicken tenders were juicy, with each bite revealing tender, flavorful meat that fell apart.
tgi fridays chicken tenders

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was impressed by these chicken tenders and would definitely order them again the next time I visit TGI Fridays for game day or just a standard dinner out.

However, I thought the breading was just slightly too thick and underseasoned to rank them higher than the top two chains.

Business Insider reached out to TGI Fridays for comment but did not receive a response before publication.

Chili's served my second-favorite chain-restaurant chicken tenders.
chilis grill and bar chicken crisper
Chili's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Chili's has been killing the game lately β€” with traffic and sales on the upswing leading up to football season, the chain is arguably in a league of its own.

The chain told BI in April that a return to commercial advertising has been a major part of the brand's efforts to increase brand awareness over the past couple of years. This includes during sports seasons. Sports Business Journal reported that in 2023, Chili's spent 38% of its TV advertising budget on live NFL action during games.

Value has also been a focus for the chain in the past year. It has expanded its "3 For Me" menu and offers happy-hour beers starting at $3.

"We're focused on creating a lively, social atmosphere that makes Chili's a great spot to watch the game," Chili's chief marketing officer George Felix told BI.

"Of course, we understand that some people prefer to watch the game from the comfort of home, which is why we also offer everyday favorites and party platters for takeout and delivery," he added.

I ordered a four-count of Chicken Crispers for $14.99, excluding tax and fees. The meal also included fries, mac and cheese, and two sauces.

This was my first time ordering Chili's plain chicken crispers.
chilis grill and bar chicken crisper
Chili's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The tenders are available in a variety of flavors, such as Nashville Hot, Honey Chipotle, Buffalo Ranch, barbecue, and Buffalo.

I paired my chicken tenders with ranch and honey mustard and was impressed by the creaminess and flavor of both sauces. However, the chicken tenders really hit it out of the park.

They were perfectly crispy, and the breading had a good amount of seasoning to give it flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was peppery, slightly salty, and just crispy enough to not overpower the chicken meat inside. Plus, for the price, you also get a lot of food.

While I'd probably opt for smothering these chicken tenders in a signature sauce next time, they also hold up on their own with their crispy breading and succulent chicken meat.

The best chain-restaurant chicken tenders came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Buffalo Wild Wings was founded in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, by Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery, who started the restaurant with the goal of bringing authentic Buffalo-style chicken wings to the area.

The chain has since expanded to over 1,200 locations and offers 21 different sauce options, including the chain's signature Buffalo sauce, for its classic bone-in wings, boneless wings, and tenders.

A five-count of the chain's hand-breaded tenders with no sauce or dry rub and fries typically costs $17.99, excluding tax and fees.

However, Buffalo Wild Wings was running a promotion that allowed me to order 15 boneless wings, five tenders, ranch or blue cheese dipping sauces, and fries for $19.99, so I chose that deal instead.

The first thing I noticed about BWW's chicken tenders was the crispy, crunchy texture.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

These chicken tenders had tiny pieces of fried breading that enhanced the texture of each bite and paired well with the tangy and fresh ranch dipping sauce provided.

The chicken tenders themselves were well-seasoned and sizable β€” they were probably the largest chicken tenders I tried, length-wise, and also the thickest.

The breading had the most distinctive flavor out of all the tenders I tried.

The chicken was extremely tender and shreddable, which stood out to me.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chicken meat inside was moist and high-quality, in my opinion. These tenders from Buffalo Wild Wings also tasted the most homemade to me, which I attributed to the flaky, hand-breaded coating.

The crispy breading added a satisfying crunch without being too thick, complementing the tender, juicy chicken inside. Every bite struck the perfect balance, making these feel less like a mass-produced product from a chain restaurant and more like something prepared fresh in a home kitchen.

All of the chicken tenders I tried had something tasty to offer for game-day and tailgating season. But in the end, Buffalo Wild Wings was the real MVP.

We spent $240 on dinner at Dōgon, one of the buzziest restaurants in DC. The best part was the $63 chicken and rice.

8 December 2024 at 05:46
Tyson sitting at a table at Dōgon with coco bread and a piri salad.
I spent $244 on a meal for two at Dōgon in Washington, DC.

Tyson Bateman

  • I ate at Kwame Onwuachi's new restaurant, Dōgon, in Washington, DC.
  • We ordered coco bread, piri piri salad, chicken and rice, oxtails, and rum cake.
  • Our tasty dinner was $244, and I'm already looking forward to my next meal there.

Kwame Onwuachi was only 25 when he appeared on "Top Chef: California" in 2015.

Just four years later, he was named Rising Star Chef of the Year by the James Beard Foundation, Chef of the Year by Esquire, and one of the best new chefs by Food and Wine β€” all thanks to his restaurant, Kith/Kin, in Washington, DC.

Although I didn't get to visit Kith/Kin before it closed in 2020, I was excited to be able to dine at the chef's latest DC venture: Dōgon.

The Afro-Caribbean restaurant's buzzy opening has been covered by the likes of Vogue, Forbes, and Eater β€” but, as a restaurant critic, I was curious to check it out myself.

Here's what it's like to dine at Dōgon.

It was tough to get a reservation.
The lobby of the Salamander hotel in Washington, DC, filled with circular coffee tables and couches with cushions.
The lobby of the Salamander hotel.

Tyson Bateman

Dōgon is located in the DC-area Salamander hotel, close to the city's southwest waterfront.

I had to make my reservation at Dōgon nearly a month in advance. Although 5:15 p.m. felt early for dinner, it was the only time I could get so I happily took it.

The cozy, basic hotel lobby didn’t prepare me for Dōgon.

Dōgon had a very distinct aesthetic.

Tyson Bateman

The lobby's subtle yellows, browns, and blues contrast greatly with the chain-link curtains that beckon diners into the hotel's restaurant to the left.

Upon entering, I was immediately struck by the dark atmosphere. Music blared from the dining room to the hostess counter.

But once I was seated across from the bar, an illuminated glass ball provided sufficient light for me and my camera.

More light glowed from the open kitchen.
Plates and bowls stacked on top of each other in a restaurant kitchen.
I peeked into the kitchen to see the staff at work.

Tyson Bateman

When I walked to the back of the restaurant, I was drawn to the view of the open kitchen.

A large group of chefs appeared to be working in harmony to bring the menu to life.

It was tough to decide what to order.
The menu at Dōgon on a black table.
Our server guided us through the menu.

Tyson Bateman

Onwuachi's menu includes dishes with influences from Nigeria, Jamaica, Trinidad, and New Orleans.

Several staffers helped throughout my meal, but my primary server, Andrea, especially stood out. When she found out it was our first time dining at Dōgon, she walked us through her favorites.

Our partyΒ had an allergy, which eliminated a few options from the menu. However, Andrea offered to adjust some dishes so that we could enjoy them.

Andrea’s first recommendation was the coco bread.
A white bowl of coco bread on a platter with malted sorghum butter.
I'm glad we started with the coco bread.

Tyson Bateman

Andrea suggested we order the coco bread, and although the $15 price tag of it horrified me, I'm glad we did.

The five petite balls of sweet, buttery dough were far lighter than coco bread I've had at Jamaican restaurants. I was impressed with the bread's cloud-like texture and how easy it was to spread the malted-sorghum butter that came with the dish.

The piri piri salad was so good I had to finish it with a spoon.
A piri piri salad with papaya sauce, cucumber, tomato, cape gooseberries, grapes, and an almond-butter-filled avocado half.
I wanted to savor every last bite of the piri piri salad.

Tyson Bateman

The piri piri salad was smaller than I'd hoped for, especially given its $22 price tag. But any complaints I had quickly vanished when our server arrived to pour papaya dressing over the flower-adorned salad.

The thick papaya sauce was flavored with garlic and chiles β€” the same mixture used in the hot sauce that Andrea had already brought to our table.

The sauce helped accentuate bites of cucumber, tomato, cape gooseberries, and grapes, along with the almond-butter-filled avocado half.

The salad's balance between creamy and crunchy textures and spicy and sweet flavors made it extremely compelling. Once I'd eaten all that I could with my fork, I spooned the remnants into my mouth, savoring every last bite.

My favorite dish was the chicken and rice.
A plate of chicken and orange rice with greens and onion to garnish the dish.
I loved all the different flavors of the chicken and rice.

Tyson Bateman

For years, I lived and worked in Houston, where I frequently indulged in food from the Nigerian community and became mildly addicted to skewers of suya and jollof rice.

Although Onwuachi's $63 chicken wasn't as spicy as the dishes at the mom-and-pop restaurants I used to frequent, he still brought some heat to the dish.

The roasted half chicken that dominated the plate barely required a knife. The tender meat was rubbed in a paste flavored with an earthy spice mix known as berbere and crowned with an herb salad.

The rice β€” made with tomatoes, chiles, and complex spices β€” tasted just like a grandmother's comfort food.

The deceptively simple dish was also plated with half a lime, more berbere paste, and a sweet-and-creamy mix of ricotta and honey. It was fun to mix and match these toppings to make each bite taste slightly different.

Onwuachi recently brought his famous oxtails back to the menu, too.
Caribbean-style oxtails covered in sauce and garnished with greens on a black plate.
I dined just days after the oxtails were introduced to the menu.

Tyson Bateman

The Caribbean-style oxtails that Onwuachi made at Kith/Kin returned to DC on November 1, just days before I dined.

At $65, they weren't cheap, but I ordered them over the $110 wagyu short rib I'd been considering. The sugar and collagen in the sauce made it delightfully sticky β€” the dish felt like a beefy dessert.

Extracting the pillowy meat from the bones reminded me of gamja-tang, my favorite Korean stew made from a pig's neck bones. It was tougher to get the meat off without the chopsticks or gloves usually provided at Korean restaurants.

However, I did my best to finish every bite, spooning the sauce over the coconut-infused rice and peas to experience the unique flavor combination of sweet heat and flesh.

I didn’t have room for dessert, but I ordered it anyway.
A plate of rum cake with vanilla whip, mint leaves, and cape gooseberries.
The rum cake was a surprising delight.

Tyson Bateman

I didn't get any pressure from Andrea or the other servers to order dessert, but I didn't want the meal to end just yet.

There were only two desserts on the menu, so I chose the $17 rum cake over the spiced cherry sorbet β€” and I'm glad I did.

Although the sweet treat sounded a little boring on paper, the crisp edges and fluffy center of the two slabs of cake made it a textural delight. It was squiggled with a vanilla whip and then finished with mint leaves and boozy, blistered cape gooseberries.

I'll definitely be returning to Dōgon.
The interior of Dōgon with black tables and chairs and ambient overhead lighting.
I can't wait for my next visit to Dōgon.

Tyson Bateman

Dōgon took some of my favorite dishes from around the world and elevated them to levels I had never imagined.

I can imagine the dining experience will be even more eye-opening for guests who haven't tasted as many world cuisines.

Either way, Dōgon is a must-visit restaurant in DC. I spent $244 there on dinner for two with no alcoholic beverages, and I would happily do it again.

I dined at Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen after years of watching the show. These 5 things surprised me most.

7 December 2024 at 06:27
A table set with silverware, a black plate topped with a gray napkin with a white-embroidered Hell's Kitchen logo, and wine, water, and cocktail glasses.
I had dinner at Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen restaurant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Stephanie Pitera Statile

  • I dined at Hell's Kitchen, Gordon Ramsay's restaurant based on the show of the same name.
  • As a longtime fan of the TV show, I loved how closely the restaurant resembled the show's set.
  • I also thought the prices were surprisingly reasonable considering the high quality of the food.

As a kid, I couldn't get enough of reality competition shows. I never missed an episode of "American Idol" or "So You Think You Can Dance" and loved the feel-good nature of the shows.

But when I got my first glimpse of a very different type of reality show β€” one where celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay shouted at contestants for overcooking scallops β€” I was hooked.

"Hell's Kitchen," which first premiered in the US on Fox in 2005 and is now in its 23rd season, follows chefs competing in various challenges in hopes of becoming a head chef at a restaurant.

It's since been nominated for five Emmys, and its star, Ramsay, even opened a chain of restaurants based on the show.

The restaurant has seven locations in places like Las Vegas, Miami, Washington, DC, and Lake Tahoe, though my husband and I had dinner at the one in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Here are five things that surprised me most about the experience.

I couldn't believe how much the restaurant resembled the show's set.
A busy restaurant with an open kitchen. The left half of the kitchen has red decor and the right half has blue decor.
The kitchen was visible from the dining area and had chefs broken up into red and blue "teams."

Stephanie Pitera Statile

When I walked into the restaurant, I was shocked by how familiar the main dining area looked. I felt as though I had stumbled onto the set of the show.

According to the restaurant's website, emulating the show was intentional. The kitchen, which was visible from the dining area, even had chefs broken up into red and blue "teams" β€” just like on the show.

The subtle theming was everywhere.
A man and a woman hold half-full Champagne glasses garnished with strawberries on pitchfork-themed toothpicks.
The show's signature pitchforks were even on our drinks.

Stephanie Pitera Statile

My husband and I ate at Hell's Kitchen as part of our anniversary celebration, so we were surprised with complimentary glasses of sparkling wine.

The glasses were topped with strawberries pierced with toothpicks shaped like pitchforks, a nod to the show's logo. The theming didn't stop there β€” the lighting fixtures hanging from the ceiling were also shaped like pitchforks.

My favorite details were the bathroom doors marked with pitchforks resembling a "W" for women and an "M" for men.

During my visit, the chefs in the kitchen seemed much happier than they do on TV.
A giant, golden Hell's Kitchen restaurant logo that features the letters "H" and "K" with a pitchfork in the middle.
Unlike on the show, we didn't hear any yelling inside the restaurant.

Stephanie Pitera Statile

It's no secret that a lot of screaming happens on the set of "Hell's Kitchen."

At the restaurant of the same name, however, I was pleased to see the chefs laughing and chatting with each other as they prepared our meals.

As fun as it is to see Ramsay shout on TV, I was happy not to hear yelling during our dinner.

The menu actually featured many of the show's signature dishes.
Yellow risotto on a white plate, topped with fennel, a lobster tail, and basil.
I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster risotto.

Stephanie Pitera Statile

When I think of "Hell's Kitchen," I immediately think of dishes like beef Wellington, scallops, and risotto. They're cooked often on the show and are some of Ramsay's signatures.

I was pleasantly surprised to find all these items and more on the restaurant's menu. And, yes, the risotto certainly lived up to the hype.

Considering the high quality of the meal, I thought the prices were surprisingly fair.
A black plate with three scallops sitting in a swirl of puree and topped with lardons, fennel, and chives, and a cast-iron skillet of meatballs topped with cheese, croutons, basil, and red sauce.
I thought our meal at Hell's Kitchen was a great value.

Stephanie Pitera Statile

When we first made a reservation at Hell's Kitchen, I expected our meal would be quite expensive.

After all, my husband and I can easily spend $50 on dinner at our local diner, and this is a TV-famous restaurant serving some high-class dishes.

However, we got three appetizers, an entrΓ©e, and a dessert cocktail for $216, including tax and tip. Considering the quality of our meal and the immersive atmosphere, I thought this price was surprisingly fair.

We ordered the shakshuka and spicy chicken sandwich. The food did take a little while to come out but boy was it delicious! And piping hot when it came to the table! The shakshuka might be my favorite that I've had with chunks of lamb sausage and satisfying crunches of cabbage. And the pita was absolutely perfect: warm, puffy and with just the right amount of chew. The chicken sandwich was juicy and well balanced with the slaw, though not particularly spicy but the winner on that plate were the fries. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Starbucks' new CEO wants you to get a brewed coffee in 'less than 30 seconds'

6 December 2024 at 02:35
Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol
"My hope is we can get you a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds," CEO Brian Niccol said.

Starbucks

  • Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol aims for a brewed cup of coffee to take less than 30 seconds to prepare.
  • He told ABC that the coffee chain will be "hitting pause" on increasing prices for this fiscal year.
  • Starbucks plans to enhance mobile orders and transparency around pricing, Niccol said.

Starbucks' new CEO, Brian Niccol, says he hopes customers will one day be able to get a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, the coffee boss said he wants to prioritize speed while also saying that there would be no more price rises for the time being.

Niccol's vision for what Starbucks will look like in five years' time includes a more efficient mobile order business with its own pick-up area.

"You're going to have an experience where when you walk in and you interact with the barista, it's going to be really quick for that brewed cup of coffee," he told ABC. "My hope is we can get you a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds."

Niccol joined Starbucks as its CEO in September after spending six years at the helm of Chipotle.

Unlike Chipotle, which announced menu price increases of about 2% on Wednesday, Niccol said: "The approach we've taken right now is we're going to hit the pause button on any pricing for this fiscal year."

"I still think there's an opportunity for us to simplify the pricing architecture right now β€” I don't love the fact that in our app right now, while you're doing this customization, it doesn't inform you what has happened to the price, so I want to get more transparent with the pricing," he said on GMA.

Niccol also saidΒ Starbucks would bring back some old staplesΒ like the Sharpies used to write names on cups and the coffee condiment bar.

The coffee chain CEO explained that they're investing in technology to provide more accurate times about when drinks will be ready for customers.

"We've got a lot of offerings that there's just one or two of these ordered a day," he said.

"The way I talk about it is, we're going to do fewer things, but we're going to do fewer things better."

I spent $62 on lunch at The Kitchen, a restaurant owned by Elon Musk's millionaire brother

  • I've lived in Boulder for years and have heard many people recommend The Kitchen to visitors.
  • The Kitchen is co-owned by Elon Musk's brother, Kimbal Musk, and chef Hugo Matheson.
  • When I went for lunch, The Kitchen had delicious food at reasonable prices and great service.

As a longtime resident of Boulder, Colorado, I've found we have a handful of restaurants that are frequently recommended to visitors.

One of those is, without question, The Kitchen.

The American bistro has been a local staple since it opened in 2004. And, almost every time someone suggests it, they'll also mention it's partly owned by Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk's brother.

The Kitchen was cofounded by a chef and Kimbal, who's actually a longtime Boulder resident.

A few years after making millions from a deal with his brother in 1999, Kimbal attended culinary school in New York.

The South African-born businessman later moved to Boulder, where he worked with chef Hugo Matheson at a restaurant on Pearl Street for a few years until the pair co-founded The Kitchen Restaurant Group in 2004.

Although it began in Boulder, the group now has restaurants in Chicago, Denver, and Austin.

Kimbal is also now somewhat of a local celebrity here. Many residents, including myself, have spotted him eating at The Kitchen's flagship location or walking around its surrounding area.

I'd say The Kitchen is in the perfect location on West Pearl Street.

Emily Hart

After not visiting The Kitchen for several years, I decided to pop in for a late weekday lunch to see what the seasonal menu looked like and if it continued to live up to its hype.

I went to the original location on West Pearl, a historic district with a pedestrian mall that's perfect for residents and visitors alike.

As a Boulder resident, I consider it the heart of the city. I love walking to the popular area to dine, drink, or shop.

The restaurant felt elegant and it wasn't very crowded.

The Kitchen felt cozy and wasn't crowded for a late weekday lunch.

Emily Hart

When I arrived at The Kitchen, just a few other groups were dining.

Although the restaurant has been open since 2004, its interior looked like it had definitely been updated throughout the years.

The bar was well-lit and looked elegant with a mirrored wall and simple stools. The back dining area looked cozy and intimate, with dark woods, exposed brick, minimal decor, and artsy orb-shaped light fixtures.

The atmosphere felt casual but still upscale, which I appreciated.

I started my meal with hand-cut garlic fries.

The hand-cut garlic fries caught my eye.

Emily Hart

The lunch menu at The Kitchen includes handhelds, plates, and sweets, with a wide variety of shareable dishes β€” crab fried rice, burrata, carrots, and lamb arayas, to name a few.

Despite the interesting choices, I stuck with my basic perennial favorite: hand-cut garlic fries. I got a large portion of fries served with a bearnaise aioli for $9.50.

Although I enjoyed the fries, the garlic was a little overpowering for my taste. The creamy, flavorful aioli was the best part of the dish.

My main meal, the crispy cauliflower, was impressive.

I couldn't finish the crispy cauliflower, but I happily took home leftovers.

Emily Hart

During my visit, the lunch menu featured dishes like a fried-chicken sandwich, lobster roll, steak frites, Halloumi naan, quiche, and rigatoni.

Although many sparked my interest, I was most curious about the crispy cauliflower for $24.50. When my server told me it was one of his favorite dishes even though he doesn't like cauliflower, I knew I had to try it.

The breaded and fried cauliflower was paired with carrots, chickpeas, tamarind chutney, coriander chutney, mango, pickled red onion, and an herb salad.

I loved the combination of flavors, but the texture of the cauliflower stood out the most. It was perfectly crispy and almost resembled fried chicken.

The portion felt nearly too large, but I was happy to be able to take leftovers home.

I'm glad I chose the cheesecake for dessert.

Emily Hart

To end my meal, I couldn't resist ordering the cheesecake with a brown-sugar pecan crust, poached pears, and fig coulis.

The slice was beautifully plated and I loved the fresh taste of the cheesecake, which didn't feel too heavy. The star, though, was the crisp brown-sugar pecan crust.

It seemed reasonably priced at $12.50 for a slice.

During my visit, the service was friendly and attentive.

Sometimes dining solo can come with issues.

Emily Hart

As a frequent solo diner, I've found restaurant service can be hit or miss when I'm alone. Sometimes, staff don't spend enough time checking in on me or ask me to sit at the bar instead of a table.

Fortunately, at The Kitchen, I was given the same level of service I'd expect if I'd been there with a group.

The professional, knowledgeable staff I encountered seemed available to answer my questions and bring me what I needed at any point during my visit.

Overall, I thought the price was reasonable for the food β€” but I'm glad I went for lunch.

The Kitchen can get crowded during dinner service.

Emily Hart

Before this, I'd had dinner at The Kitchen several times. I'd always enjoyed my experience but found the space could get crowded, so I'm glad I came here for a quieter lunch.

The prices felt very reasonable for the quality of the dishes, attentive service, and the amount of food I received β€” I spent $62 for a starter, main, and dessert, including a 22% tip.

Overall, The Kitchen lives up to the hype, with professional and friendly service, a great location, fair prices, and fresh, inventive dishes that left me wanting to return for another lunch.

My family spent $580 at a Michelin-starred steak house at the Four Seasons Orlando. Our meal wasn't even the best part.

3 December 2024 at 08:04
A brown square table filled with plates of food, including steak, mushrooms, and potatoes
I took my family of four to a high-end steak-house dinner at Capa.

Terri Peters

  • My family ate at Capa, a Michelin-starred steak house at the Four Seasons Orlando in Disney World.
  • We loved the steak dishes, from the super-tender wagyu beef to the bone-in cowboy ribeye.
  • Our $580 meal was incredible, and we'd definitely eat at the Spanish-inspired steak house again.

Last summer, I spent a solo weekend at the Four Seasons Orlando, a luxury hotel on Disney World property. While there, I dined at Capa, a Michelin-starred steak house located in the expansive resort.

The restaurant, which opened in 2014, received its first Michelin star in 2022. It also earned Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, and is known for its Spanish-inspired food and steak-house experience.

After having a great experience there, I decided to return with my husband and two teenagers to see what they'd think of the restaurant's cuisine.

Here's what my family's experience at Capa was like.

We visited Capa on a Friday evening for dinner.

Capa had a large dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Terri Peters

When we arrived at Capa for a Friday-night dinner, we noticed the restaurant had a sleek, modern layout with minimalistic Spanish decor.

The dining area's floor-to-ceiling windows displayed breathtaking views of the resort, a few Disney World theme parks, and the Florida sunset.

The main dining room also had an open kitchen, where customers could watch staffΒ cook meatΒ and seafood on a wood-fired grill.

We started our dinner with a round of drinks.

My husband ordered a cocktail, and my kids and I ordered mocktails.

Terri Peters

To start our meal, my kids and I ordered mocktails, and my husband got the In Spanish Fashion ($18) β€” a whiskey- and brandy-based cocktail.

My kids chose the Lavender Haze ($10 each), made with butterfly-pea tea, and I ordered the Spa Day ($10), a refreshing cucumber-based drink.

Throughout the course of the night, my husband also ordered a glass of wine ($28) and a vermouth ($12).

Next, we ordered pan con tomate.
A brown plate holding slices of bread with cheese and thin slices of Iberico ham on top
The pan con tomate tasted fresh and delicious.

Terri Peters

For our appetizer, we got the pan con tomate β€” crusty bread topped with a tomato pulp. We opted to add Manchego cheese and ham to the dish ($24) and were not disappointed.

Each bite burst with the salty flavors of the cheese and ham, and the bread tasted fresh and delicious.

Capa is known for its Miyazaki wagyu beef, so I ordered some as my entrΓ©e.

The Miyazaki wagyu beef was melt-in-your mouth tender.

Terri Peters

For my entrΓ©e, I chose the MiyazakiΒ wagyu beef, which had a top-grade A5 quality score and was made from purebred Japanese cattle.

I ordered 5 ounces of the tender beef, priced at $32 per ounce ($160 total), and was blown away by its preparation.

The medium-rare wagyu, which was served atop a hot-pink salt slab, melted in my mouth like butter. It was the most tender beef I've ever eaten.

My daughter ordered the filet.

The filet was perfectly cooked.

Terri Peters

My 14-year-old daughter ordered the 8-ounce filet ($72), served with a piquillo-pepper purΓ©e. The medium-rare steak was perfectly cooked, and she ate every bite.

A filet is my daughter's go-to at any steak house, but she said her meal at Capa was the best she's ever had β€” which is high praise from a kid who often dines out with her food-writer mom.

My husband opted for the bone-in cowboy ribeye.

The bone-in cowboy ribeye was absolutely delicious.

Terri Peters

At our server's recommendation, my husband ordered the bone-in cowboy ribeye ($91).

The steak, cooked to a medium temperature, was perfect when I tried it. Each bit of fat marbling turned into a melt-in-your-mouth tender bite.

We also tried a sampling of Capa's steak sauces.
A long orange plate with five small cups of green, brown, and yellow sauces placed on top
We loved pairing our bites of steak with the different sauces.

Terri Peters

To accompany our steaks, we ordered a selection of five sauces for $22.

The bernesa sauce was buttery and creamy, the verde version was tangy with hints of Greek yogurt, and the cilantro-horseradish option had a perfect blend of herbs and spices. The peppercorn sauce was just as good as au-poivre-style sauces I've had at other steak houses.

However, my favorite was the Capa steak sauce, a vibrant, spicy option that tasted way better than store-bought condiments.Β

Our dinner came with a selection of flavored salts.
A red plate with a napkin and a black serving dish with three shallow bowls filled with different types of salt
The flavored salts were a nice addition to the meal.

Terri Peters

During our meal, our server also brought a complimentary flavored-sea-salt tray.

My daughter and I loved one salt that tasted truffle-infused, and my husband was so inspired by a smoky flavor that he made his own version at home later that week.

My son isn't very adventurous, so he ordered off the kid's menu.
A white plate filled with two halves of a grilled-cheese sandwich, fries, and a small cup with ketchup
My son enjoyed the grilled-cheese sandwich and chicken fingers.

Terri Peters

My son is a picky eater, so even though he's 16, he ordered two $10-entrΓ©es from the kid's menu: a grilled-cheese sandwich and chicken fingers.

Even at a fancy, Michelin-starred restaurant, the standard fare tasted like any other kid's menu items.

We ordered three family-style side dishes to share.
A brown table filled with plates of steak and black bowls containing mushrooms, potatoes, and polenta
All of the side dishes were very tasty.

Terri Peters

The setas ($16) β€” mushrooms with a caramelized-onion sauce β€” were earthy and savory. We also tried the maΓz, a corn-and-polenta dish topped with goat cheese ($14), that was so good we said we'd try recreating something similar at home.

The true star, however, was the perfectly crisp patatas bravas ($12) β€” spicy fried potatoes topped with cornichons, chipotle aioli, and a paprika-tomato sauce.Β

For dessert, we ordered a Disney classic β€” churros.
A square black serving dish with a metal cup filled with four churros and a yellow and brown sauce
The churros de Madrid came with two dipping sauces.

Terri Peters

For dessert, we got two orders of the $15 churros de Madrid.

The dish, served with chocolate and dulce-de-leche dipping sauces, was a hit with everyone at the table.

After our meal, we watched Disney fireworks on the veranda.

Watching fireworks from the veranda was a nice way to end the night.

Terri Peters

When we made our reservation, we checked the firework schedules for both Epcot and Magic Kingdom so we could watch the nighttime shows from Capa's veranda.

After dessert, we headed outside to watch back-to-back fireworks displays at the two theme parks. It was a great way to see the shows without battling the crowds or buying theme-park tickets.

Our $580 meal was pricey, but the experience was worth it.
Selfie of the writer Terri Peters wearing a green dress with a pink print and holding a yellow-green mocktail
We enjoyed our family dinner at Capa, and we'd definitely come back.

Terri Peters

With tax and without the tip, our meal cost $580, which we felt was a good value. The Michelin-starred food was incredible, and the prices didn't seem too far off from those of other major steak-house chains I've visited.

The award-winning restaurant also did an amazing job accommodating families, as I noticed lots of younger kids and parents dining at other tables.

For me, this delicious, elegant dining option opens up a different kind of Disney adventure β€” one with fine dining and spectacular cuisine.

I tried apple pies from 6 fast-food chains and ranked them from worst to best

27 November 2024 at 08:32
Three apple pies.
I tried many fast-food apple pies, but Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada ultimately won the top spot.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

  • I tried apple pies from Arby's, KFC, McDonald's, Panda Express, Popeyes, and Taco Bell.
  • I loved Arby's apple-infused croissant-textured pie.
  • However, my favorite was the $3.65 caramel apple empanada from Taco Bell.

Year-round, I opt for savory pies. But come fall, I ditch my go-to chicken potpies for the season's staple: apple pie.

When it comes to pies, everyone has their own traditions and favorite flavors, but apples have endured as one of the more popular choices.

Earlier this year, Holiday Calendar, a platform dedicated to holiday lists, analyzed the grocery habits of 12 million Americans and surveyed 4,500 people across 15 states to determine their favorite pie. It found that apple pie consistently ranked in the top five most popular pies across the country. Additionally, in 2022, Instacart revealed that apple pie accounted for over 27% of its pie sales between February 2021 and January 2022, declaring it a clear favorite among the American crowd.

While there's no substitute for the fresh-out-of-the-oven homemade version, on-the-go options served at fast-food chains make for good alternatives.

To find which fast-food chain serves the best apple pie, I tried pies from Arby's, KFC, McDonald's, Panda Express, Popeyes, and Taco Bell and ranked them from my least favorite to my favorite based on flavor, texture, and value.

Here's how every fast-food apple pie ranked.

My least favorite were the Apple Pie Poppers, which were added to KFC menus earlier this year.
Apple Popper Pies from KFC.
Apple Pie Poppers from KFC are last on my list of apple pies.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

A serving of four bite-sized apple pies cost $2.91, excluding tax and fees, at my local KFC in Manhattan, New York. When I tried these in August, the pies also came in a 10-count serving.

The apple pie poppers were only added to KFC's menu in April, so I was excited to try them. KFC's menu no longer lists the apple pies, but it did add a cherry pie version in October. The brand did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Each pastry was about 2 inches long and had slits on one side.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

I placed an online order through DoorDash and received my pastries within 14 minutes. Despite the quick delivery, when I opened the packet, the pastries were barely lukewarm and already slightly soggy.

When I tasted them, I thought the ratio of fruit to dough was off, with each popper only holding about two tiny cubes of apple.

Three bites into the tiny pocket pie, I still hadn't gotten the gooey apple taste I love. Instead, I felt like I was eating fried flour.

I thought the four mini pies, which were 340 calories, would be great for groups to share.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

While these weren't my favorite apple-pie dessert, I could see how they could be a good snack option because of their size. Given that they came in packs of four or 10, I thought groups might enjoy ordering them.

My fifth favorite was the Apple Pie Roll from Panda Express.

The pie roll cost $2, excluding tax and fees, at a Panda Express I visited in Chicago.

At first glance, it looked like a cross between a pie and a Chinese egg roll.

The chain's first-ever dessert option, introduced in 2023, was created to combine the flavors and textures of an American apple pie and a Chinese egg roll.

It's made using a wonton wrapper and apple filling, topped with cinnamon sugar.

It came hot and crispy straight out of the fryer and had a warm cinnamon smell.

I was impressed with the freshness of this roll and liked that it is always served hot. Before I even took a bite, I could tell the pastry had a nice crunchy exterior.

However, the overpowering cinnamon and sugar coating made this pie roll too sweet for my taste.

A dessert doesn't need to be doused in sugar, but this one was, putting it fifth in my ranking.

However, I loved the crunch of the pastry, and the serving had the fewest calories of all the pies I tried β€”Β 150 calories β€”Β so it may be a good sweet option for some diners looking for lower-calorie options.

My fourth favorite was Popeyes' Cinnamon Apple Pie.

The cinnamon-coated dessert cost $1.89, without taxes and fees, at the Popeyes I visited in Chicago.

Unlike the pies from KFC, this 240-calorie pie has no slits or holes on either side. It comes wrapped with a few fork-like impressions on its corners to prevent the filling from escaping.

I thought this pie had an overpowering cinnamon flavor.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

I think spices like cinnamon are less for taste and more for their fragrance β€”Β if you add just the right amount, it can be a game changer, but overdo it, as in the case of this Popeyes pie, and it can really throw the whole recipe off-balance.

But I enjoyed its slightly zesty apple filling.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The one thing Popeyes got right was the flavor of its filling, which had just the right hint of lemon and some apple chunks. I'm obsessed with mixing tangy and sweet flavor profiles, and I think it helped this pie stand out from the rest.

My third favorite was Arby's Apple Turnover.

It cost $2.40 at the Arby's I visited in Chicago, excluding tax and fees.

At first glance, I thought the frosting drizzle on top seemed unnecessary.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The turnover came in a regular, white-colored pastry packet with no branding. The basic packaging and the sugary drizzle didn't appeal to me at first, but when I did take a bite, I was pleasantly surprised.

I loved its flaky croissant-like texture and the jam-like apple filling inside.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The inside had the perfect layer of apple filling, which was molten but still a bit thick. It was encased in crisp pastry.

Despite having only one layer of apple filling, this 430-calorie pie did not taste doughy and was well-balanced.

However, it did not have that overall pie feeling. I felt as though I was eating a stuffed croissant.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

Most importantly, the apple chunks were missing. The jam-like texture in the filling meant there was a hint of artificialness, which took away from the spirit of the season and the pie for me.

My second favorite was the Baked Apple Pie from McDonald's.
An apple pie from McDonald's.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

At $1.89 β€” excluding tax and feesβ€” this apple pie from a Chicago McDonald's was priced similarly to the one at Popeyes.

The pie came in a signature yellow box and was served warm.

First launched in 1968, the brand's apple pie was fried in its early days. Over the years, though, it has undergone several transformations. The most significant of these was the switch from frying to baking in 1992. It's now 243 calories.

I loved that it had a pie-like texture with a lattice on top.

Although the shape of the pie was pretty standard, I was happy to see McDonald's added patterns to the pastry.

This pie had the right ratio of apples to dough, and I enjoyed the warm and soft interior and its crispy biscuit-like exterior.

My favorite was Taco Bell's limited-time caramel apple empanada.

My favorite pie from Taco Bell was also the most expensive.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

At $3.65 β€” excluding tax and feesβ€” this apple pie from my local Taco Bell in New York, which I ordered via DoorDash, was the most expensive on the list.

The empanada is part of Taco Bell's new limited-time menu, which features fan-favorite items from the past.

Last month, Taco Bell unveiled a new "Decades" menu featuring old favorites. The menu included popular items that had been previously discontinued from each decade since the brand launched.

Four items have been available since Halloween, but the brand recently added its 2004 hit, the caramel apple empanada.

The empanada was first introduced as part of the brand's Big Bell Value Menu but was discontinued in 2019 until now.

I loved that I could taste the filling right from my first bite.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

As soon as I held the pastry's paper sleeve, I noticed how warm it felt. It had remained hot even though I was trying it about 15 minutes after I received it on a cold day.

As I took my first bite, I could immediately taste the warm and velvety filling alongside the crispy pastry. Its freshness stood out, and unlike the other pies I'd tried, this one got to the star of the dish β€” the filling β€” right from the start.

Even the apples had a nice tart and juicy crunch to them and paired nicely with the caramel.

All the elements of a pie perfectly align in this one: a warm and creamy filling paired with the crunchiest pastry.
Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

As far as fast-food pies go, this was by far the best I'd tried.

The filling struck a perfect balance and was not overly sweet, and it paired beautifully with the crispy, lightly salted dough. I had every intention of sharing a few bites with a friend but ended up eating the entire pastry myself.

It also felt slightly larger and more satisfying than the other pies on this list, which perhaps explains why it's also the priciest option.

Overall, each pie I tried had a unique flavor profile and varied textures, ranging from crispy and toasted to soft and molten.

But Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada stood out for its well-balanced flavors: a warm, crispy pie with juicy whole chunks of apple complemented by creamy caramel, setting the perfect tone for the cozy days ahead.

  • My husband and I went to Cap's Place, a historic Florida restaurant only accessible by boat.
  • We took a free boat ride to the restaurant, where I enjoyed some of the best seafood I've ever had.
  • I'd recommend Cap's Place to anyone looking for a unique night out in the Fort Lauderdale area.

As a lifelong Florida resident, I love visiting under-the-radar spots throughout the state.

Recently, I decided to visit Cap's Place Island Restaurant, located just north of downtown Fort Lauderdale. The restaurant, which is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places, opened in 1928 as a restaurant and gambling den.

Today, Cap's Place is known for its seafood fare, speakeasy ambiance, and (best of all) sending a boat to pick up and drop off patrons during operating hours.

Recently, my husband and I decided to experience the boat ride and grab some seafood at Cap's Place. I'd been to the restaurant before, though it had been years since my last visit.

Here's what the experience was like.

To get to Cap's Place, we headed to the docks in Lighthouse Point, Florida.

Cap's Place, which is located on a peninsula between Lake Placid and Florida's Intracoastal Waterway, ferries customers to the restaurant in a custom-built water taxi that can hold up to 25 people.

To get to the restaurant in time for our 7 p.m. reservation, we drove through winding neighborhood streets until we reached Cap's Dock, marked with a wooden sign next to a marina.

We parked in the lot and made our way to the dock, where we admired the views of Lake Placid.

We were a little worried at first because the boat wasn't at the dock.

After a short wait, the boat arrived to pick us up.

Linnea Bailey

We didn't see the boat at the dock at first, so we called the restaurant. The staff assured us the captain would be back shortly, and sure enough, the boat was at Cap's Dock within minutes.

When he arrived, the captain told us the boat makes trips back and forth to the dock all evening. If the boat isn't at the port, guests can trust it will return soon.

On the boat, we enjoyed the views of Lake Placid and the homes lining its shore.

The short boat ride offered pretty views.

Linnea Bailey

When we sat down, the boat felt cozy and elegant. The perimeter of the open-air cabin was lined with seating, and the entire area was covered by a small roof.

The ride to the restaurant, which took about 10 minutes, felt like traveling to a tropical island. The restaurant is surrounded by mangroves and just out of sight from Cap's Dock.

Along the way, we passed stately mansions, yachts anchored at private docks, and graceful birds flying above the calm water.

The boat ride was free (though tips are appreciated). We tipped $10 on both our rides to and from the restaurant.

Arriving at the dock at Cap's Place felt like stepping back in time.

After we arrived at the dock, we had a short walk to the restaurant.

Linnea Bailey

Even before walking up the path to Cap's Place, I felt like I'd arrived in old Florida β€” a time when the state's natural beauty ran wild. The only sound was the lapping of the water against the dock.

We followed a path made of wooden planks that led directly to the restaurant and bar at Cap's Place.

The bar, located in a separate building, was filled with memorabilia, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

I loved soaking in the history of Cap's Place.

Linnea Bailey

The restaurant is owned and managed by the three children of Al Hasis, who helped Captain Eugene Theodore Knight, or "Cap," found the restaurant nearly 100 years ago.

At least one of the siblings β€” Talle, Ted, and Tom β€” can usually be found at the restaurant during operating hours.

As I walked into the bar, I noticed newspaper clippings, photos, nautical items, and art prints depicting the restaurant's long history hanging on the walls.

I loved learning about the restaurant's construction (it was originally built on a beached barge) and looking at pictures from the owners' childhood.

We ordered drinks and enjoyed the room's wood furnishings and twinkling lights.
A bar with lots of small tables and wooden chairs, wooden exposed ceilings, and wooden support beams throughout the room
The bar area felt cozy.

Linnea Bailey

At the bar, we ordered two drinks and conversed with one of the owners, Tom.

As we drank, he told us stories about the restaurant's success during Prohibition, when smuggling alcohol from Bimini (a district in the Bahamas) was a known service.

He also told us about some of the celebrities β€” like Joe DiMaggio β€”who he said dined at Cap's Place.

We spent $30 on a vodka tonic and a glass of wine, including the tip.

Next, we headed to the restaurant for dinner and ate a delicious seafood feast.

The Maryland-style crab cakes were delicious.

Linnea Bailey

When we moved to the restaurant, which is adjacent to the bar, Talle showed us to our table. The dining area, a spacious wood-frame building filled with large glass windows, offered beautiful water views.

We ordered an Okeechobee hearts of palm salad and another glass of wine. Cap's Place specializes in seafood, so we got the Maryland-style crab cakes and yellowtail snapper as entrΓ©es.

It was some of the most delicious fare I've ever eaten. For dessert, we split a piece of key-lime pie, which was sweet and tangy.

We spent $150 on our dinner, including the tip.

After a short walk around the property, we caught the boat back to the dock.

We headed back home at about 10 p.m.

Linnea Bailey

At about 10 p.m., we headed to the dock and caught the boat back to the port.

Along the way, soft glittering lights from houses reflected on the water, and there was a nice breeze. It was a magnificent evening out.

I'd recommend Cap's Place to anyone in the Fort Lauderdale area, and I'm already planning our next visit.

I can't wait to go back to Cap's Place.

Linnea Bailey

Since our dinner at Cap's Place, I've been telling everyone how remarkable this historic restaurant was. The boat ride, the food, and the owners of the restaurant were amazing.

Altogether, we spent about $200 on food, drinks, and tips. It's more than I'd normally pay for a night out, but it feels worth it for a place steeped in Florida history.

I can't wait to take the short boat journey and enjoy the delicious food at Cap's Place again.
