I've worked at Costco for 19 years. Here are 10 of the best things I'm seeing on the shelves right now.

Costco is carrying plenty of eye-catching items to stock up on this January.

Veronica Thatcher

  • This January, Costco is stocking its shelves with fun food items and home goods.
  • Accomplish 2025 workout goals with the King Smith WalkingPad Pro folding treadmill.
  • I recommend picking up the Pressed wellness smoothies and Del Real tamales.

With the start of the new year, I'm excited to see what kinds of products Costco will introduce in 2025. As an employee, I always love browsing the store for unique items I haven't seen before.

This January, I've already noticed lots of great food, home goods, and beauty products on shelves. Here are 10 things I recommend checking out at Costco this month.

The Optimum Nutrition micronized creatine powder could be good for fitness fanatics.

I may add the Optimum Nutrition micronized creatine powder to my daily routine.

Veronica Thatcher

I think the Optimum Nutrition micronized creatine powder could be a great addition to your routine, especially if you're hitting the gym.

According to its packaging, this powder can support muscle building and performance when used daily, over time, alongside an exercise routine. To use it, mix a rounded teaspoon of the unflavored powder into a shake or glass of water.

The Optimum Nutrition creatine powder is $20 at my location.Β

The PressedΒ wellness smoothies are one of my favorite recent purchases.

Each pack of the Pressed wellness smoothies comes with eight bottles.

Veronica Thatcher

Each box of the Pressed wellness smoothies contains 10-ounce bottles in acai-berry, strawberry-orange-mango, tropical, and greens flavors. The smoothies contain 100% juice and three to four grams of dietary fiber.

At my location, an eight-count package costs $16.90, which comes out to less than $2.20 per bottle.

Prepare for spring and summer activities with the Macsports XL folding wagon.

The Macsports XL folding wagon with brakes could be useful during the warmer weather.

Veronica Thatcher

As Costco starts bringing in springtime items, I think the Macsports XL folding wagon will be a hot seller.

This collapsible wagon has brakes for easy stopping, an inside zipper pocket, and an adjustable handle. The wagon can also hold up to 350 pounds and has durable, all-terrain wheels.

The Macsports wagon is $90 at my Costco.Β

The Cat Cube lithium four-in-one portable jump starter could come in handy.

I think vehicle owners should have a tool like the Cat Cube lithium four-in-one portable jump starter.

Veronica Thatcher

If you ask me, everyone should have the Cat Cube lithium portable jump starter in their garage or car.

This four-in-one tool has a few features, including a lithium jump starter and an air compressor.

The Cat Cube lithium portable jump starter costs $130 at my location.

You can add the Turbotax 2024 federal e-file and state download to your cart this month.
A hand holds a blue package with Intuit Turbotax logo on it in front of a shelf filled with other blue packages
There are three Turbotax 2024 federal e-file and state download packages to choose from.

Veronica Thatcher

I recently added the Turbotax 2024 federal e-file and state download to my shopping list.

These downloads are available in deluxe, home-and-business, and premier packages, so there's something for almost everyone's tax needs. Each package also comes with a $10 in-product credit that can be used for services like live tax advice or state e-file fees.

At my store, the Turbotax download packages run from $56 to $96.

Keep extra food cool in the Midea convertible chest freezer.

The Midea convertible chest freezer with an interior LED light also functions as a refrigerator.

Veronica Thatcher

If you're running out of freezer space, I recommend heading to Costco to check out this Midea product.

This freezer chest has two removable wire storage baskets, a front-mount temperature control, and an interior LED light. Best of all, it can turn into a refrigerator with the flip of a switch.

The Midea convertible chest freezer is $200 at my location.

The Del Real cheese-and-green-chile tamales could be a delicious lunch or dinner.
A hand holds a package of cheese and green-chile tamales with green lettering and an image of tamales on the front
The Del Real cheese-and-green-chile tamales are super easy to heat and eat.

Veronica Thatcher

If you're a fan of Mexican-style dishes, these Del Real tamales are a great find.

The tamales come with a cheese-and-green-chile filling β€” don't worry, they aren't spicy β€” and take less than three minutes to heat in the microwave. I also like that each serving contains 13 grams of protein.

At my store, a 15-count pack of the Del Real tamales can be found in the deli section for $18.80.

The Thomasville Wills oversize chair and storage ottoman are comfy and functional.

The Thomasville Wills oversize chair and storage ottoman are comfortable and chic.

Veronica Thatcher

The Thomasville Wills oversize chair and storage ottoman both have ultra-soft furry corduroy fabric that's comfortable and chic. The chair, which measures 64 inches long and 35 inches high, has an extra-wide seat and two large pillows.

At my store, this set is $500.

Upgrade your skincare routine with the Hero Mighty Patches.
A hand holds a white box with images of blue and red packages of Mighty Patch pimple patches on it
I think the Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patches are a great deal at Costco.

Veronica Thatcher

Acne products can be expensive, so I was happy to see the Hero Mighty Patches available at Costco.

Each package contains 54 original patches for nighttime use and 27 invisible patches that can be worn during the day. These patches can extract pus and visibly shrink whiteheads.

The Hero Mighty Patches are $23 at my Costco.

Get a workout in with the King Smith WalkingPad Pro folding treadmill.
A white box with an image of a woman with a ponytail on a walking pad
The King Smith WalkingPad Pro folding treadmill comes fully assembled.

Veronica Thatcher

If you have a busy lifestyle, the King Smith treadmill could be a good way to accomplish your workout goals at home.

This product comes fully assembled and has a USB charging port, a 250-pound weight capacity, and a brushless motor (so the walking pad runs smoothly and quietly). It's also foldable, making it easy to store in small spaces.

The King Smith walking pad is $500 at my store.

My husband and I follow the Mediterranean diet and shop at Costco. Here are 12 things I always buy.

6 January 2025 at 09:57

Costco allows me to follow the Mediterranean diet while sticking to a budget.

Kate Santos

  • My husband and I do our best to follow the Mediterranean diet on a budget, so we shop at Costco.
  • We've found Costco is a good spot for Mediterranean-diet staples such as dried fruit and olive oil.
  • When shopping there, we buy a lot of bulk fresh produce, including lemons and avocados.

My husband and I started following the Mediterranean diet years ago to keep healthy.

So far, we've enjoyed it β€” and dietitians and doctors even recently named the Mediterranean diet the healthiest way to eat for the eighth year in a row.

Those following the Mediterranean diet limit processed foods and red meat while focusing on seafood, healthy fats, and fresh produce.

While trying to follow it, we mostly buy groceries at Costco to save money. We love the wholesale chain's meat and produce sections and the many other deals it offers.

Here's what we buy at Costco while following the Mediterranean diet.

We use a ton of olive oil, which comes in large containers at Costco.

Olive oil is a key staple of the Mediterranean diet.

Kate Santos

A great way to start following the Mediterranean diet at home is to replace the butter you use when cooking with olive oil.

We use olive oil in almost everything we make, whether we're cooking eggs, creating a light salad dressing, or baking chicken.

Although Costco sells various types, I usually prefer the Kirkland 100% Italian extra-virgin olive oil.

I help our olive oil last longer by storing it in a smaller dispenser in the kitchen, which keeps us from pouring with a heavy hand.

We snack on a lot of dried fruit.

Kirkland Signature Sunsweet dried plums are an easy sweet snack.

Kate Santos

We no longer eat potato chips or sweets when we're hungry. Instead, we use dried fruits, such as dried plums, to satisfy our snack cravings between meals.

On this shopping trip, I opted for the ones from Kirkland Signature Sunsweet.

Many folks in Blue Zones drink red wine, so we often pick some up.

Red wine is great for cooking and sipping.

Kate Santos

After seeing research about wine drinkers in Blue Zones, areas with lots of centenarians, we try to use red wine in our cooking when we aren't just drinking it.

Being in California, I often opt for locally produced wine during weekly grocery runs. Still, I occasionally take home one of Costco's French or Italian wine offerings.

Garlic makes everything taste better.

A bag of Christopher Ranch garlic is my go-to buy at Costco.

Kate Santos

We do our best to follow a diet high in garlic, which is said to be great for the immune system. We dice garlic when cooking fish or chicken in olive oil, and it's a great flavor enhancer for pasta and soup.

In my opinion, the Christopher Ranch garlic at Costco typically tastes fresher than bulbs from other commercially farmed brands.

We always keep plenty of lemons on hand.
Bags of lemons in mesh bags at Costco
I usually buy whichever brand of lemons I see at Costco.

Kate Santos

We're lucky to have a lemon tree in our backyard, but it produces Meyer Lemons, which are a bit sweeter with more of a mandarin taste.

Since we love the taste of citrus lemons, we usually buy them in bulk from Costco.

I don't have brand loyalty for lemons at Costco β€” I just get what's in stock. If organic lemons are available, I'll buy those.

Blueberries are a great ingredient rich in polyphenol.

Dried blueberries are tasty in yogurt.

Kate Santos

Fresh blueberries from Costco are a great addition to my typical breakfast of low-fat Greek yogurt. However, the bulk size isn't always the best option when I'm only shopping for two.

Instead, I sometimes pick up dried blueberries. They're rich in polyphenols, which may improve cognitive functioning.

Dried blueberries pair well with mixed nuts for snacking and are also great in yogurt or oatmeal.

Avocados are especially nice in meals that don't have meat or carbs.
Avodacos in mesh bags on display at Costco
Because we live in California, avocados are everywhere.

Kate Santos

The Mediterranean diet is heavy on fruits and vegetables, and avocados seem to be the most adaptable to various recipes.

A Mediterranean-style way to eat them is by mashing them and adding onion, tomato, and garlic to make fresh guacamole.

To dip in it, we swap out fried tortilla chips for thin pita chips.

Tomatoes are a go-to for every dinner.

Grape tomatoes are a wonderful snack when paired with mozzarella and basil.

Kate Santos

We never leave Costco without picking up organic grape tomatoes.

They're great for a snack β€” especially when paired with fresh mozzarella and basil β€” or as a side dish or tossed in salads.

Fish is a Mediterranean staple, and we especially love fresh tilapia.

Fresh tilapia might be tricky for beginners to prepare.

Kate Santos

Fresh fish is the staple of a Mediterranean-inspired diet, so I always check out Costco's seafood section. Often, we find fresh tilapia.

Although I've found making baked whole tilapia requires more advanced cooking skills, other fish, such as cod, can be much easier to prepare.

For beginner cooks, fresh tuna steaks can also be a great place to start.

Salmon is great for dinner β€” or breakfast.
Salmon with garlic butter in clear container at Costco
Costco typically sells preseasoned and smoked salmon.

Kate Santos

Our local Costco has salmon in both the meat aisle and in the prepared-foods section, where a version already seasoned with garlic butter is ready to be put in the oven.

Since I prefer to avoid butter as often as possible, I typically prepare salmon myself. A pan-seared salmon dinner only requires a few ingredients, many of which are often part of the Mediterranean diet, including lemon, olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic.

We also use salmon in other meals, like breakfast. We'll pick up smoked salmon at Costco and pair it with eggs.

The Kirkland Signature prepackaged quinoa is a fantastic side that requires little prep.

Costco has an excellent premade quinoa salad.

Kate Santos

Since I work full-time, it can be difficult to cook every meal entirely from scratch. On busy days, I reach for Costco's prepared foods.

The chain's rotisserie chicken might be a fan favorite, but I love its delicious quinoa salad, which is a great light side for dinner or lunch.

I'm not sure if it's a seasonal or limited-edition item, but I always keep an eye out for it. One container is large enough to last us a few meals.

We skip premade salads and get a spring mix instead.

A spring mix is easy to customize with toppings and dressing.

Kate Santos

In my experience, premade salads with "Mediterranean" in the title often have dressing ingredients that aren't up to snuff for me.

Instead, I make my own, using olive oil and lemon juice as the dressing. I like to pick up an organic spring mix from Costco to use as a base.

By chopping up some vegetables β€” carrots, cucumber, or whatever else I like β€” I can quickly make my ideal salad with the freshest available ingredients.

I follow the Mediterranean diet. Here are 16 groceries I love to buy at Aldi and how I use them.

3 January 2025 at 07:19
goat cheese and pesto from aldi
I stock up on Mediterranean-diet staples, like goat cheese and pesto, at Aldi.

Kristina Lopez

  • I try to follow the Mediterranean diet and shop at Aldi for tasty, affordable groceries.
  • I pick up my staples like lemons, balsamic vinegar, marinated artichokes, and raw honey.
  • Aldi has quick meals like frozen seafood paella and gyros that also suit my nutrition goals.Β

I'm a home cook and I enjoy makingΒ Mediterranean-diet-inspired dishes with a twist.

The Mediterranean diet is a flexible eating style that focuses on fresh produce, healthy fats, legumes, and whole grains β€” it also limits the intake of processed foods, red meat, and refined sugars. Doctors and dietitians have now voted it the healthiest diet for eight years in a row.Β

Fortunately, the budget grocer Aldi has a lot of ingredients and freezer staples that make it easier to eat this way. Here are my favorite things to buy at Aldi when I'm trying to follow the Mediterranean diet.

Lemons are prominent in Mediterranean cuisines, and I use every part of the fruit.
Aldi seedless lemons
A squeeze of lemon can add a burst of acidity to a dish.

Kristina Lopez

Lemons are a grocery staple for me, as they're often the star ingredient in Mediterranean-inspired meals and drinks.

In addition to using it in recipes,Β I squeeze lemon juice in my water or tea every morning and put the zest in my nondairy yogurt as a midday snack.

Grapes are naturally sweet and make an excellent addition to charcuterie boards.
Aldi red and green grapes
My favorite grapes are red and black, but I like to buy different colors.

Kristina Lopez

I love that grapes satisfy my sweet tooth without also giving me a sugar high.

Sometimes, I'll putΒ Specially Selected grapes on charcuterie boards alongside manchego cheese, goat cheese, roasted almonds, toasted baguette slices, pine nuts, cucumber slices, bell peppers, and roasted-garlic hummus.Β

I also like to slice grapes in half, freeze them, and drop them in my drinks like ice cubes to sweeten them without using sugar.Β

Tomatoes are almost always on my grocery list.
Aldi roma tomatoes
Roma tomatoes add a rich taste to many iconic Mediterranean dishes.

Kristina Lopez

Tomatoes are a hit in marinara sauces and Greek salads, but I think the fruits' true magic is their ability to maintain their flavor and texture in pretty much any dish.Β

Roma tomatoes are always on my grocery list, whether I use them for minestrone soup or bake them into a puff pastry topped with feta cheese.

They also give me a dose of vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene, a plant nutrient in tomatoes that researchers have linked to several health benefits.

South Mill Champs' stuffed mushrooms stuffed are delicious and light.
Aldi stuffed mushrooms
I try to buy the South Mill Champs stuffed mushrooms when I find them.

Kristina Lopez

I didn't always enjoy eating mushrooms, but incorporating more Mediterranean-inspired ingredients into my diet has inspired me to try more foods I thought I'd never like.

Now, I love making mushrooms at home. One of my favorite buys is the South Mill Champs mushrooms stuffed with spinach-and-artichokeΒ filling. Since they're premade, I don't have to worry about following a recipe.

The mushrooms are small enough to serve as a side dish or to eat as a light snack.

A little bit of goat cheese goes a long way.
Aldi goat cheese, garlic and herb flavor
I liked the flavored goat cheeses at Aldi.

Kristina Lopez

Even if I only add a small dollop of goat cheese to my salads and charcuterie boards, I still get a punch of tangy flavor.Β

Aldi carries a range of goat cheeses, though I particularly love the Emporium Selection garlic-and-herb variety. It'sΒ great to spread on toasted crostini, and I recommend topping it with chopped tomatoes and avocado.

Park Street Deli's chickpea salad is packed with fiber and flavor.
Aldi chickpea salad
This Park Street Deli salad has chickpeas, edamame, cranberries, carrots, and bell peppers.

Kristina Lopez

There are so many things you can do with chickpeas, from putting them in salads and stews to making them into hummus and falafel.Β

One of my favorite ways to enjoy them is in the Park Street Deli chickpea salad, which hasΒ edamame, cranberries, carrots, and bell peppers. The cranberries' sweetness cuts through the vinegar dressing's acidity, and the crisp bell peppers complement the edamame.

The Specially Selected oven-baked flatbread takes very little time to prepare and tastes excellent.
Aldi flatbread
I can experiment with different toppings when I have a flatbread base.

Kristina Lopez

I like picking up Specially Selected flatbreads at Aldi, which tend to be large and full of flavor. They're also easy to customize.Β

I love topping them with different Mediterranean flavors, like grilled chicken with feta, artichoke, spinach, roasted chickpeas, mushrooms, shallots, and goat cheese with pesto. I usually drizzle balsamic vinegar on top to finish it off.

Β

Pestos pair well with flatbreads, pasta, hummus, and so much more.
Aldi pesto
I switch between pesto types depending on what I'm cooking.

Kristina Lopez

Pesto makes a great base in so many recipes, and Priano often has different varieties of the sauce.

Its alla Genovese pesto is green, nutty, and garlicky. Its red rosso pesto is more tomato-forward and equally delicious.

I toss warm linguine in the green, basil-based pesto and spread the red, tomato-based pesto on flatbread. Sometimes I mix either into hummus to add some flavor or use them to season chicken, beef, veal, and seafood.

I keep Tuscan Garden marinated artichoke hearts in my pantry to dress up salads and pizzas.
Aldi marinated artichoke hearts
I buy Tuscan Garden marinated artichokes, which come in glass jars.

Kristina Lopez

Artichoke hearts and leaves have so many vitamins and minerals.Β

Some people eat the Tuscan Garden marinated artichoke hearts straight out of the jar, but I like to experiment with them, whether I'm adding zest to simple salads or using them as a pizza topping.Β

Savoritz Parmesan crisps are a high-protein, low-carb alternative to potato chips.
Aldi parmesan crisps
Savoritz Parmesan crisps don't make me feel sluggish after I eat them.

Kristina Lopez

I don't focus on limiting or cutting out carbs, but I care about finding delicious alternatives that are better for my health.

Savoritz Parmesan crisps have 13 grams of protein and 1 gram of carbs per serving, which aligns with my nutrition goals.Β I like to crunch Savoritz Parmesan crisps over a Caesar salad or use them as crackers on a charcuterie board.

Priano balsamic vinegar adds a nice acidity to salad, pizza, and meat.
Aldi balsamic vinegar
Balsamic vinegar can be a great meat marinade.

Kristina Lopez

I use Priano's balsamic vinegar to make a Mediterranean-inspired salad dressing, combining high-quality olive oil, freshly squeezed lemon juice, garlic, and Italian herbs and spices.

I pour this mixture over romaine lettuce, tomato wedges, thinly sliced red onions, cucumber slices, and a chunk of Greek feta. Sometimes, I add a roasted marinated lamb leg or chicken breast to the salad for extra flavor and protein.Β

When I can't decide which hummus I want, I choose Park Street Deli's pack of four.
Aldi four pac of hummus
Park Street Deli's hummus quartet allows me to try different flavors before committing to one.

Kristina Lopez

Hummus is such a large part of Mediterranean cuisine that it needs no introduction. However, it can be hard to choose which flavor I want to have in my refrigerator until my next grocery run.

Park Street Deli's hummus quartet solves that problem by offering four flavors in one container: classic, roasted red pepper, roasted garlic, and cilantro jalapeΓ±o. I try to buy this variety pack whenever I can find it.Β

Although I'm not a huge fan of jalapeΓ±o, I've spread this hummus on turkey wraps and avocado toast, and it isn't the worst combination I've ever tried.

Β

Aldi's Mediterranean-herb salmon is an easy-to-prepare, delicious entrΓ©e.
Aldi atlantic salmon
I love salmon, and this one from Aldi bakes beautifully.

Kristina Lopez

Aldi's delicious Atlantic salmon tends to be affordable and it's the star of many of my meals. I especially like the one seasoned with Mediterranean herbs β€” they give the fish so much flavor.

I like to pair it with a vegetable medley that includes broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots, and green beans.

The Mediterranean-herb salmon also goes well with Greek lemon potatoes or pasta in a light sauce with lemon and garlic butter.

The Bremer gyro-sandwich kit is a top-notch lunch option.
Aldi gyro kit
It's nice to have easy-to-make meals on hand for when I get too busy.

Kristina Lopez

As a freelancer running my own business, it can be hard to pull myself away from work.Β

Luckily, Bremer's gyro kit has everything I need for a quick lunch, including 16 ounces of fully cooked gyro meat, 8 ounces of tzatziki sauce, and five pieces of pita bread.Β

The gyro meat can be warmedΒ in the microwave or on a skillet for a quick, delicious lunch or dinner.Β

Β

When I can't make paella from scratch, I look for this Specially Selected frozen meal.
Aldi seafood paella
Paella is a Spanish staple that's become a favorite in my house.

Kristina Lopez

Spanish paella is typically made using a saffron-and-seafood broth, which gets absorbed into the rice during the cooking process. Then, seafood β€” like fish, shrimp, clams, squids, and mussels β€” adds the flavors of the Mediterranean Sea.

Whenever I can find it, I like to pick up Specially Selected's frozen Spanish seafood paella. It's aΒ great meal for busy nights with pollock, shrimp, and calamari.Β

I use raw honey in many Mediterranean-inspired recipes.
Aldi raw honey
I like to add a touch of honey and lemon juice to my tea.

Kristina Lopez

When I visited Spain and Greece in 2022, I liked seeing locals use honey to sweeten their meals and desserts.Β It's a smart, obvious, and natural way to enhance the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine.

I like to drizzle Specially Selected raw honey over rich Italian pizza to create a contrast between sweet and savory flavors or dip Greek doughnuts in a honey-and-cinnamon mixture.Β

No matter how I use it, raw honey is a delicious way to add sweetness to a dish.

I'm a sommelier who shops at Costco. Here are 5 of my favorite wines to get when I'm having company over.

30 December 2024 at 05:41
A hand holds a black bottle with a white label and golden text that says "Gigondas"
I've found some great wines at Costco.

Lucia Palm

  • I'm a certified sommelier who loves shopping for tasty, high-quality wine at Costco.
  • The Kirkland Signature Asolo prosecco superiore is refreshing and bubbly.
  • I pair the Guillaume Gonnet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, a sweet wine, with dessert.

As a certified sommelier, I believe great food needs an excellent wine pairing. Period.

That's why, when I'm entertaining, I turn to stores like Costco that I know will have a solid selection of high-quality wines at a great value.

Here are five wines I buy from Costco when I'm having company over.

The Guillaume Gonnet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is the perfect sweet wine to pair with dessert.
A hand holds a clear bottle of holden wine with a white label that says "Guillaume Gonnet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise"
I'd serve the Guillaume Gonnet Muscat de Beaumes de Venise with fruit, ice cream, or pie.

Lucia Palm

When I attended the Culinary Institute of America, we learned about wine pairing during a five-course lunch β€” and the experience sent me down a dessert-wine rabbit hole.Β

Now, serving sweet wines alongside desserts in my own home makes me feel like I'm recreating that special experience for my guests.

This sweet Guillaume Gonnet wine, made from fruit harvested in France's RhΓ΄ne region, contains 100% muscat grapes.

It tastes like sweet apricots and honey, so I'd pair it with pumpkin pie, vanilla ice cream, buttery shortbread, and desserts made with stone fruits (like peaches and plums).

The Kirkland Signature Asolo prosecco superiore feels like a high-brow beverage.Β
A hand holds a Kirkland Signature wine with a purple label that says "Asolo Prosecco"
The Kirkland Signature Asolo prosecco superiore is a refreshing wine.

Lucia Palm

I'll be honest β€”Β most of the time, prosecco isn't a wine I tend to reach for. It can have a dull, muted flavor, and I may as well just be drinking sparkling water.

However, the Kirkland Signature Asolo prosecco superiore is anything but that.

When I put my nose to a glass of this drink, I'm hit with fruity notes β€” to me, it smells like white peach and green apple β€” and florals. Upon tasting this wine, my palate gets a refreshing acidity and zippy bubbles.

This prosecco makes a fabulous spritz when mixed with amaro liqueur and ginger beer. It also pairs beautifully with crunchy, salty snacks.

I love the flavor of the Scharffenberger Cellars brut rosΓ©.
A hand holds a black bottle of wine with a pink label that says "Scharffenberger Methode Traditionnelle"
The Scharffenberger Cellars brut rosΓ© is on the drier side.

Lucia Palm

While studying to be a sommelier, I visited the Scharffenberger tasting room in Mendocino County, California, and the quality of the wines blew me away.

Because Mendocino County has a cool maritime climate, the grapes used in this wine have a perfect tartness that elevate this sparkling beverage from good to great. This brut (dry) rosΓ© also has notes of raspberry jam and strawberries on a pastry base.

Plus, it's made using a similar method to how Champagne is processed. So, if you want something of similar quality to Champagne for one-third of the price, this is a great option.

I serve Louis Père & Fils chablis before my guests have their main course.
A hand holds a clear bottle of wine with a green label with an illustration of a house and text that says "Chablis"
I like to give the Louis Père & Fils chablis to guests to whet their appetites.

Lucia Palm

Chablis is like the nice, popular girl. Pretty much everyone loves it, and it's a total crowd-pleaser. Even people I know who hate chardonnay β€” the variety of grapes used in this wine β€” adore this option.

This white wine, made with grapes harvested in France's Burgundy region, tastes fresh and light. It also spent nine months on the fine lees β€” a fermentation process that gives the beverage a more complex flavor β€” so it has a pillow-soft texture.

I love to serve this wine when my guests arrive so they can whet their appetites.

The Kirkland Signature GigondasΒ is a full-bodied red wine with fruity notes.
A hand holds a black bottle with a white label with gold text that says "Gigondas"
I recommend pairing the Kirkland Signature Gigondas with red meat.

Lucia Palm

Gigondas is a French appellation (a designated area where grapes are grown and harvested) in the southern RhΓ΄ne region known for robust red wines.

This Kirkland Signature wine has a satisfying juiciness and fruity notes β€” when I have a glass, I can taste spiced plum, black cherries, and even mocha. Plus, it's the perfect partner for heavier dishes.

One of my favorite pairings for this wine is a juicy cheeseburger. If I'm hosting a dinner party and want meals where I let the oven do most of the work, I serve it with short ribs, shepherd's pie, or a deep, rich ragΓΉ.

I've worked at Costco for 19 years. Here are the 10 best things I bought there this year.

26 December 2024 at 08:50
Four stacks of tires with two upright tires on either end of the stacks at Costco
This year, I made lots of great purchases at Costco.

Veronica Thatcher

  • As a Costco employee, I purchased lots of great items at the warehouse throughout 2024.
  • The Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken is a must-buy when I need easy lunches and dinners.
  • This year, I invested in useful services like a cellphone plan and tires for my car.

As a Costco employee, I shop at the store all year long. However, now that it's December, I'm reflecting on a few of my favorite purchases I made this year at the retailer.

Here are some of the best things I got at Costco in 2024.

The Snapware Pyrex 18-piece glass food-storage set has been a kitchen essential this year.
Boxes with images of Pyrex Snapware containing assorted vegetables, pasta, and other foods on the packaging
I used the Snapware Pyrex 18-piece glass food-storage set all year long.

Veronica Thatcher

As someone with a small family who cooks almost daily, these Snapware Pyrex 18-piece glass food-storage sets came in handy all year.

Each set comes with nine airtight containers in various sizes that are leak-proof and microwave-safe.

The Shark Detect cordless stick vacuum is super easy to use.
Side-by-side image of a Shark vacuum display with a black box and thin white vacuum at Costco
The Shark Detect clean and empty cordless stick vacuum comes with plenty of great features.

Veronica Thatcher

The Shark Detect cordless stick vacuum is one of the best cleaning devices I've ever owned. At just over 6 pounds, it feels lightweight and is easy to haul up and down the stairs.

The Shark vacuum has four deep-cleaning modes and runs for up to 60 minutes, giving me plenty of time to tidy up. Each set also comes with a crevice tool and a multi-surface brush roll.

Even better, the device converts to a hand vacuum, making it easier to clean small, hard-to-reach places, car interiors, and staircases.

We keep the Yummy Dino Buddies chicken nuggets in our freezer at all times.
A hand holds an orange box of Dino Buddies chicken nuggets with images of chicken nuggets and dinosaur illustrations on the box
My kids love the Yummy Dino Buddies chicken nuggets.

Veronica Thatcher

The Yummy Dino Buddies chicken nuggets are a great way for my kids to get their protein in. The chicken is juicy, and the nuggets get a slight crunch when air-fried.

To prepare them, I simply place some nuggets in the air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit or microwave them for about a minute and a half.

I took advantage of the cell-service kiosks at Costco.

As a Costco member, I got a $200 shop card when I purchased a new phone line at the in-store kiosk.

Veronica Thatcher

If you shop at Costco, you may have seen kiosks from different cell-service providers when entering the warehouse. These kiosks usually offer deals on new cell-service plans and upgrades from carriers like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.

Depending on the carrier and warehouse, Costco customers who stop at the cell-service kiosks may also be eligible for members-only perks. For example, I got a $200 Costco shop card when I added a new phone line to my plan.

The Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken is a must-buy.

I've used the Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken in countless lunches and dinners.

Veronica Thatcher

The Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken has made making quick lunches and dinners easy.

Costco team members cook the rotisserie chicken fresh at the warehouse every day. I like to serve it with a side or shred the whole thing to use in meals like enchiladas or chicken salad.

At just $5 for a 3-pound chicken, it's one of the best deals out there.

This year, we invested in the Arlo Essential XL wireless HD camera.

I feel safer in my home with the Arlo Essential XL wireless HD camera.

Veronica Thatcher

The Arlo Essential XL wireless-camera bundle has been a good investment when it comes to feeling safe and at ease in our home.

This system is easy to install and has live HD video and color night vision. I also like that I can access the camera from my smartphone.

Each bundle comes with three cameras and a four-month Arlo secure subscription.

The Kirkland Signature organic Pacific Bold K-Cup pods last us a while.

The 120-count boxes of the Kirkland Signature organic Pacific Bold K-Cup pods are a staple for my family.

Veronica Thatcher

As a coffee fanatic, I know buying Keurig coffee pods can get pretty pricey. However, I feel I get a pretty good bang for my buck when I buy 120-count boxes of the Kirkland Signature K-cups.

The store carries flavors like breakfast blend and summit roast, but my family's staple is the Kirkland Signature organic Pacific Bold pods.

This year, I got new tires for my car.

I love that I was able to replace my car's tires at Costco.

Veronica Thatcher

Getting new tires is a big purchase, but buying them from the Costco tire center was one of the best decisions I made this past year. The center offers various sizes from a few top-name brands, like Michelin and Firestone.

Not only do customers get wholesale prices, but the tire center also offers installation and inflation pressure checks.

I always love buying my produce from Costco.

Veronica Thatcher

Costco is the only place I buy my produce. Whether I'm getting berries, oranges, bananas, or even mangoes, the produce always seems to be high-quality and is sold at wholesale prices.

If you have a big family or know you'll be able to consume large amounts of fruit or vegetables before they go bad, I think it's worth buying produce in bulk.

I get an eye exam at Costco every year.
Several eyeglasses on wooden shelf display on red table at Costco. Three pairs of glasses on the top shelves are also sunglasses
Costco's optical center offers glasses and contacts.

Veronica Thatcher

Each year, I get an eye exam and purchase prescription glasses at Costco's optical center.

Customers can contact their insurance provider to check if the optical center's services are covered. However, you can still get an exam and purchase glasses if you're not covered by insurance β€” at my warehouse, out-of-pocket eye exams start at about $70.

Patients don't have to be cardholders to get an exam, but only members can purchase glasses or contacts.

I spent a week buying every meal from an app that saves food from being wasted. Despite some letdowns, I was impressed.

23 December 2024 at 01:21
Too Good To Go lets users buy unsold food for a third of the original price.
Too Good To Go lets users buy unsold food for a third of the original price.

Too Good To Go

  • The Too Good To Go app aims to help consumers save money and reduce food waste.
  • I tried it for a week to see how much I could save.
  • I found it was most useful for fresh produce, but the pastries weren't always great.

Everything is expensive right now. It's rare that I ever leave the grocery store having spent less than I wanted to.

I've heard of apps like Too Good To Go, which sell surplus food at a discount, but never gone much further than signing up.

To test it out, I spent a week in early December only buying food from the app. I wanted to see if it was a viable way of saving money, sticking to a budget, and learning to be a bit more flexible with my cooking.

I also want to be more mindful about the groceries I buy and, unfortunately, sometimes waste.

Too Good To Go's CEO, Mette Lykke, told me in a recent interview that the app now operates in 19 countries across North America, Europe, and Australia, and covers 170,000 stores.

Lykke said the company hopes to inspire people "to make that the first step in a journey toward having a more responsible relationship with food."

"If we look at the state of the planet and the climate crisis, then it's pretty clear that something needs to change," Lykke said.

It was fun trying out new places in my city, London. While the pastries I received were hit-and-miss, the fresh produce from local stores was a real highlight.

Monday

Monday was largely spent figuring out the platform. I found that its map feature was the best way to find local cafΓ©s and stores.

I saw that an expensive cafΓ© on my local high street offered pastries, so I opted for that β€” Β£3.90 ($4.95) for a blueberry muffin, chocolate chip cookie, and slice of banana bread.

After the sugar rush I was still hungry, so I chose a bag of sandwiches and pastries from my local Costa Coffee for Β£3.50 ($4.44).

I got a slightly stale pan au raisin and two sandwiches β€” one seasonal turkey feast, and a BLT which my boyfriend took for lunch the next day.

Lindsay Dodgson/Business Insider

In total, I spent Β£7.40 ($9.39) on items worth at least Β£22.90 ($29.08), so the week was off to a good start.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, I switched things up by trying out fresh produce from a couple of local stores. They offered "surprise bags" of groceries for Β£4 ($5.08) each.

While I was slightly overwhelmed with what to do with it all, it was an absolute hit with my boyfriend, who is always thrilled to be met with a culinary challenge.

One of the bags had Padron peppers, garlic, tomatoes, mushrooms, radishes, and beets. I also received three packets of pita bread, a sourdough baguette, a fruit bar, some buttermilk, and fresh herbs.

The multivitamin patches were a curveball, which I have to admit I didn't try.

In the other bag, I got a melon, some Greek yogurt, lettuce, butter, rainbow chard, and sausages.

Lindsay Dodgson/Business Insider

The sausages went in the freezer, but almost everything else was used to make a pasta sauce, roasted peppers, sauteed mushrooms, buttermilk pancakes, and basil oil. The beets got pickled.

The only thing we ended up having to waste was the watercress, which was already looking past its best.

In total, I spent Β£8 ($10.16) on items worth at least Β£24 ($30.48).

Wednesday

Tuesday's groceries went further than expected, so I bought another pastry bag to satisfy my snackiness during the day.

I'm not convinced the sourdough loaf and pastel de nata (which I squashed) I got for Β£4.09 ($5.19) truly had a full sale value of Β£12 ($15.24), but they were both pretty good.

The server recommended putting the loaf in the freezer and toasting the slices, which was a great tip that lasted me the rest of the week.

Thursday

I knew I was out for dinner with friends on Thursday so I picked up some Starbucks pastries on the way. This was the biggest letdown of the experiment.

Throughout the week, I realized that several cafΓ©s don't offer anything until quite late in the day, by which time the food has been sitting out for hours. This makes sense from their perspective, but it does mean that some of the food isn't at its best.

But for Β£2.50 ($3.18), a muffin, cookie, cinnamon bun, and cheese stick is certainly better than nothing.

Too Good To Go Starbucks
Even more pastries.

Lindsay Dodgson/Business Insider

In total, I spent Β£2.50 ($3.18) on items worth at least Β£7.50 ($9.52).

Friday

I'd been eyeing up a nearby Bangladeshi restaurant all week, so knowing I had a night in alone on Friday, I went for the Β£4.09 ($5.19) curry bag they were offering.

I got a few bhajis, some chicken and rice, two veggie curries, more rice, some okra, and what I thought was probably cabbage.

It was all good and spicy, though the bhajis were slightly stale.

Lindsay Dodgson/Business Insider

In total, I spent Β£4.09 ($5.19) on items worth at least Β£12 ($15.24).

The results

For the whole week, I spent Β£26.08 ($33.11) on Β£78.40 ($99.54) worth of food.

Not every bag felt like amazing value. But some, especially the grocery bags, were genuinely impressive.

The experience taught me a lot about how to be flexible. I'm now committed to focusing less on "use by" dates on food and sticking to the safety assessment Lykke taught me β€” "look, smell, taste, don't waste" β€” before throwing things out.

My advice for anyone downloading Too Good To Go is to use it with foresight. The app is great for saving money for those on a strict budget who are OK with some compromises.

Too Good To Go is available in huge stores in the UK (such as Asda) and the US (including Whole Foods), so there are plenty of places to try.

Lykke told me the nice thing about Too Good To Go is you don't have to give anything up, and she's right. From a quick scan of my area, there is bubble tea, ice cream, Turkish food, burgers, doughnuts, and more. You don't get to choose exactly what you want, but as long as you don't mind a bit of a surprise, it's worth a try,

"You actually get good food, it's a good deal, and you do something good," Lykke said. "It's win-win for businesses, for consumers, and for the planet."

I'm a dietitian who shops at Trader Joe's. Here are 8 of the best things I got there this year.

By: Leah Kern
20 December 2024 at 08:08
A hand holds a large plastic bag of frozen shrimp with a red label on the front
As a dietitian and former Trader Joe's employee, the store is my go-to for tasty, satisfying ingredients.

Leah Kern

  • I'm a dietitian and former Trader Joe's employee who frequently shopped at the retailer in 2024.
  • I can't get enough of the store's Italian Bomba hot-pepper sauce.
  • When it comes to seafood, I get the raw Argentinian red shrimp or farm-raised smoked-trout fillets.

Before I became a dietitian and intuitive-eating counselor, I worked at Trader Joe's. To this day, the retailer is one of my favorite places to find new food options that keep things varied and exciting in the kitchen.

As a dietitian, I encourage people to follow an intuitive-eating framework, which means I don't put clients on restrictive diets or meal plans.

Instead, I use the principles of intuitive eating β€” an evidenced-based approach that encourages clients to listen to their body's natural hunger and fullness cues β€” to help them decide what, when, and how much they should eat.

Throughout my own intuitive-eating journey, I've found some great snacks and ingredients at Trader Joe's. Here are some of my favorite things I grabbed there throughout 2024.

Trader Joe's farm-raised smoked-trout fillets are delicious in salads or on a cracker.
A hand holds a small blue can with white illustrations of fish on the label
Trader Joe's farm-raised smoked-trout fillets are a must-buy for me.

Leah Kern

Eating protein-rich foods, like this smoked trout, is an excellent way to create an energizing, filling meal.

Trader Joe's smoked trout has become a staple in my home β€” it's a great shelf-stable item to have on hand when I want to add more sustenance to a meal.

This flavorful fish makes a great addition to a greens-and-feta salad, though the fillets are also delicious simply paired with a cracker.

I have the organic tea and lemonade when I want to make my meals more satisfying.
A hand holds a large jug of Trader Joe's tea and lemonade in front of a shelf of juice
I love that Trader Joe's organic tea and lemonade doesn't taste too sweet.

Leah Kern

When I followed restrictive diets, I was afraid to have sugar-sweetened beverages because I felt guilty about drinking my calories.

Now, as an intuitive eater, I know that adding fun drinks to meals can be a great way to enhance satisfaction. When our meals are satisfying, we can move on without dwelling and decrease our chances of bingeing or overeating later.

This tea-and-lemonade beverage has the perfect level of sweetness. I love having it with a turkey sandwich, a hearty salad, or cheese and crackers.

I was recently introduced to the Italian Bomba hot-pepper sauce, and I love it.
A hand holds a jar of Italian Bomba hot-pepper sauce in front of a shelf of canned and bottled products at Trader Joe's
Trader Joe's Italian Bomba hot-pepper sauce adds flavor to pasta and soups.

Leah Kern

A friend recently shared a recipe for spicy-vodka rigatoni, which called for Calabrian chiles. She recommended using Trader Joe's Italian Bomba sauce, a Calabrian-chile-based flavoring, and it has become an instant favorite.

It adds a flavorful punch to pasta dishes and soups, though it's also tasty when smeared on crusty bread or mixed with mayo.

Trader Joe's Silver Goat chèvre is perfectly creamy and crumbly.
A hand holds a small log of goat cheese with a silver label with an illustration of a goat and "silver goat" text
I use Trader Joe's Silver Goat chèvre to add a creaminess to various dishes.

Leah Kern

I've tried many different kinds of goat cheese, but this one from Trader Joe's is my favorite.

It's the ideal mixture of creamy and crumbly, making it a perfect addition to fall salads or a roasted-root-veggie dish. It also adds richness to pasta dishes when I don't have milk or cream.

I recommend spreading this goat cheese on toast and pairing it with different toppings, like walnuts, honey, and sea salt, or caramelized mushrooms and onions.

I love adding the organic toasted-sesame dressing to my salads.
A hand holds a bottle of a yellow-brown dressing with a white and tan label that says "toasted sesame dressing"
Trader Joe's organic toasted-sesame dressing is delicious.

Leah Kern

When a craving for salad strikes, I enjoy using Trader Joes toasted-sesame dressing.

Having a premade dressing lowers the workload of making a salad, which is another reason I love keeping this delicious dressing stocked in my fridge.

Trader Joe's broccoli-and-kale slaw is a convenient way for me to get my veggies.
A hand holds a large green bag of broccoli-and-kale slaw at Trader Joe's
I usually pair Trader Joe's broccoli-and-kale slaw with pizza.

Leah Kern

Some days, I crave fresh flavors but don't have the bandwidth to cut up lettuce and veggies β€” which is why I appreciate this broccoli-and-kale slaw with dried cherries, slivered almonds, and sunflower seeds.

Even when I don't have the time or energy to start chopping ingredients, I can almost always find it in me to dump the contents into a bowl and toss them with the kit's premade, sweet slaw dressing.

Sometimes, I'll doctor the salad up with goat-cheese crumbles. I typically pair the salad with a frozen pizza to add a source of carbs and fat and create a more filling meal.

I use the raw Argentinian red shrimp to add protein to simple dishes.
A hand holds a large plastic bag of frozen shrimp with a red label on the front
I like to add Trader Joe's raw Argentinian red shrimp to either a pesto pasta or a scampi.

Leah Kern

In my opinion, the Argentinian red shrimp tastes so fresh, you'd never know that it comes frozen.

During the summer, I add this shrimp to a simple pasta dish with pesto, pine nuts, and tomatoes for a protein-rich meal with lots of staying power. In the colder months, I make a shrimp scampi with simple ingredients like lemon, broth, wine, and Parmesan cheese.

Like the smoked trout, this frozen shrimp is great for adding a protein boost to my meals.

Trader Joe's hot-and-sweet pepper jelly is the perfect flavor combination.
A hand holds a glass jar with a pink and orange label that says "hot and sweet pepper jelly"
I spread Trader Joe's hot-and-sweet pepper jelly on crackers and sandwiches.

Leah Kern

When I ask new clients which foods they enjoy, many of them have been dieting for so long that they no longer know what flavors they authentically enjoy.

In my intuitive-eating experience, I discovered I love the combination of sweet and salty flavors. In particular, I adore Trader Joe's sweet, spicy pepper jam with savory cheese and crackers.

It's also delicious spread on a grilled-cheese sandwich for that same flavor contrast.

Aldi isn't my family's primary grocery store, but I'll always make a special trip there for these 8 things

19 December 2024 at 08:47

Aldi has a great selection of snacks and other fun items.

Anne James

  • Aldi isn't my family's primary grocery store, but there are a few things I'll always stop there for.
  • I love picking up snacks like Simply Nature PB&J bites and Bake Shop Bakery cheese Danish.
  • I also like to browse the Aldi Finds aisle for fun and unique items.

Although I live relatively close to an Aldi, the store isn't our family's primary grocery stop.

However, we like to shop there for specialty items every couple of months, and regularly keep an eye on the Aldi Finds in the store's weekly ads.

Here are eight items we stock up on for our family of four at Aldi.

Simply Nature PB&J bites are a delicious snack.
A bag of Simply Nature PB&J bites on a wooden table.
The Simply Nature PB&J bites are gluten-free.

Anne James

Whenever I see the Simply Nature gluten-free PB&J bites at Aldi, I stock up. My kids enjoy snacking on them, and I love the sweet-and-salty flavor.

The Savoritz turtle-shaped cheddar crackers are a fun alternative to Goldfish.

The Savoritz cheddar turtles are a great snack.

Anne James

The Savoritz cheddar turtles are very similar in taste to Goldfish and are a fun way to mix up our usual snack selection. The only difference I've found is that they're slightly less puffy than Goldfish.

I love finding unique items in the Aldi Finds section.
A hand holding a pink box of Disney-princess shoes with Ariel from "The Little Mermaid" on the sole.
During my most recent Aldi run, I found Disney princess shoes.

Anne James

I focus a lot of my shopping on the Aldi Finds aisle, which has a rotating selection of fun items. Earlier this year, Aldi had a Disney drop that included Mickey ears, sneakers, pillows, and more.

On my recent trip, I found Disney princess shoes and slippers, some seasonal food items and decor, and multiple Bluey toys.

I love grabbing fruit at Aldi.

Aldi has a nice selection of fruit at a reasonable price.

Anne James

I never leave Aldi without fresh fruit, as the store's prices are almost always lower than that of other grocery stores near me.

Aldi carries one of my favorite cheese Danish.
Containers of Bake Shop cheese and raspberry Danish.
I'm usually picky about Danish, but love Aldi's Bake Shop Bakery version.

Anne James

I grew up eating cheese Danish from a small bakery near my grandma's house, and I rarely find anything that comes close in terms of taste.

However, I love the version from Bake Shop Bakery, which has the perfect ratio of filling to pastry.

The store has a fun selection of frozen treats.
Boxes of Sundae Shoppe ice-cream pops shaped like Christmas trees, snowmen, and reindeer.
During my last trip, I saw seasonal ice-cream pops shaped like Christmas trees, snowmen, and reindeer.

Anne James

Aldi's frozen selection always has fun and unique treats, including seasonal ice-cream pops, which my children love.

At one point, my store even had Barq's frozen root-beer floats in push-pop form.

Aldi has a large selection of seasonal decorations and tableware.
An assortment of holiday decorations and gifts, including chunky-knit blankets, a tall wooden Santa, and artificial Christmas trees.
Aldi had a great selection of items for Christmas.

Anne James

Aldi always has a good selection of indoor and outdoor seasonal decorations.

During my most recent trip, the store had Christmas decorations, cozy blankets, Christmas trees, and holiday plates and serving platters.

Aldi's serving trays are perfect for entertaining β€” cute and festive but not so precious that I'm concerned about my kids grabbing food off of them.

I always check out Aldi's large selection of gluten-free items.
Boxes of liveGfree gluten-free stuffing on a shelf.
I love Aldi's liveGfree stuffing.

Anne James

One of the things I love most about Aldi is the store's large selection of gluten-free items. In addition to the aforementioned Simply Nature PB&J bites, I love grabbing Aldi's liveGfree stuffing.

I tried 13 of Trader Joe's holiday meal items, and I'd buy 7 of them again

By: Ted Berg
11 December 2024 at 13:41
A wooden table filled with boxes of Trader Joe's holiday meal items, including pork, frozen appetizers, and a wedge of cheese
I tried 13 of Trader Joe's holiday meal items.

Ted Berg

  • I tried 13 of Trader Joe's holiday meal items to see which ingredients and appetizers were the best.
  • I don't think I'd buy Trader Joe's artichoke bread pudding or Portuguese bacalhau tartelettes again.
  • I was a big fan of Trader Joe's family-style meat lasagna and eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle.

When it comes to seasonal meal items at Trader Joe's, it can be difficult to figure out what to get to entertain family and friends for the holidays.

So, I tried 13 of Trader Joe's holiday food items to see which were the best and what I wouldn't get next time.

Here's how each food item stacked up.

Editor's Note: This story was originally published on December 22, 2023, and most recently updated on December 11, 2024. Product availability varies β€” some items on this list may not currently be available at Trader Joe's.

The eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle seemed like an easy-to-make appetizer.
A purple bag of Trader Joe's eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle on a wooden table
I looked forward to seeing what Trader Joe's eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle would be like.

Ted Berg

Trader Joe's eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle was the first time I saw sfogliatelle, an Italian pastry, used in a savory dish.

I thought the delicate layered pastry would make for a phenomenal texture.

The eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle was a satisfying, cheesy appetizer.
Six pieces of eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle on a white plate
Trader Joe's eggplant parmigiana sfogliatelle was full of cheese and sauce.

Ted Berg

When I baked the appetizer, the exterior became crispy and flaky, and the interior was moist and chewy.

The eggplant pieces pulled apart easily, though the cheesy, saucy filling was a little messy.

They were simple to make in the air fryer, and I thought they looked more elegant than anything you'd expect to come from the freezer aisle.

Trader Joe's figgy cheddar combines sweet and savory notes.

Trader Joe's figgy cheddar was made with spiced fruit.

Ted Berg

I wasn't sure if I'd like Trader Joe's figgy cheddar because I usually prefer unadulterated cheeses. However, I decided to give it a try.

The figgy cheddar was so hearty and rich that it hardly needed a cracker.
Yellow block of figgy cheddar on a black cutting board
Trader Joe's figgy cheddar had a tasty flavor.

Ted Berg

The fig flavor gave the cheese a subtle hint of sweetness, and the rum (in which the figs were marinated) contributed a light, pleasant spiced note.

The cheese paired well with the chili cracker from Trader Joe's scalloped cracker trio, as the sweetness of the fig complemented the spice.

I thought Trader Joe's mini quiche duo looked delicious.

Trader Joe's mini quiche duo came with two different flavors.

Ted Berg

This pack of Trader Joe's mini quiches comes with two flavors: uncured bacon with sweet onion and Swiss cheese with mushroom.

Out of the package, I thought they looked promising and perfectly portioned.

These tasty two-bite appetizers were ready in 10 minutes.
12 mini quiche duos on a plate. Six of the quiches are dark brown and the other six are a lighter tan color
I prepared Trader Joe's mini quiches in the oven.

Ted Berg

The mini quiches were surprisingly moist.

I especially liked the version with uncured bacon and sweet onion, because they had a nice smoky flavor.

My wife preferred the mushroom-and-Swiss option, but that one was a touch too mushroom-heavy for my taste.

I wasn't sure how good Trader Joe's family-style meat lasagna would actually be.
Package of Trader Joe's family-style meat lasagna with a photo of lasagna on the box placed on a wooden counter
I had high hopes for Trader Joe's family-style lasagna.

Ted Berg

Lasagna is a holiday staple for the Italian-American half of my family, so I had high expectations for Trader Joe's family-style meat lasagna.

Don’t tell my actual family that I enjoyed the meat lasagna.
A black container of Trader Joe's baked family-style lasagna on a gray counter
Trader Joe's family-style lasagna looked delicious after I baked it.

Ted Berg

At first glance, the components of the baked lasagna were oddly distributed β€” all the meat sauce was on top of the noodles and the bottom layers were solely pasta and ricotta.

Luckily, there was plenty of sauce to spread around.

I wouldn't be able to pass it off as homemade, but it was good enough to buy for my family of four again.

However, if the Italian side of my family finds out I'm praising a store-bought lasagna, I might not be welcome at the next party.

Trader Joe's shrimp pouches of many colors looked like a festive treat.
Box of Trader Joe's shrimp pouches of many colors with a picture of dumplings in a steamer on the box placed on a wooden counter
I liked that Trader Joe's shrimp pouches of many colors came with white, green, red, and yellow hues.

Ted Berg

If there's one thing I could tell from Trader Joe's shrimp pouches of many colors, it's that food in various hues is always better than boring old monochromatic options.

The tasty shrimp pouches were an especially fun treat for my kids.
Three each of green, white, red, and yellow shrimp pouches on white a plate placed on a wooden counter
My children were fans of Trader Joe's shrimp pouches of many colors.

Ted Berg

My 3-year-old daughter squealed with delight and insisted on trying each color when she saw these festive dumplings.

I pan-fried my shrimp dumplings so they'd be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

The dumplings weren't anything super special, but they were still pretty good and fun to look at.

I'll likely serve these as an appetizer this holiday season.

Trader Joe's Brie en croΓ»te didn’t look great, but it's hard to mess up baked cheese.
Box of Trader Joe's Brie en croute with a picture of oozing baked Brie on the package placed on a wooden counter
I wasn't sure how much flavor Trader Joe's Brie en croΓ»te would have.

Ted Berg

The label for Trader Joe's Brie en croΓ»te listed all sorts of ways to gussy the thing up β€” like dolloping raspberry preserves or red peppers and pine nuts on top.

I went for the most basic preparation.

The baked Brie was surprisingly delicious.

The Brie tasted better than it looked.

Ted Berg

On its own, the pastry-wrapped Brie didn't look like something I'd want to put out for guests.

But when I sliced into it, all the molten Brie came cascading out, and I was reminded that cheese is delicious.

I thought the Brie paired perfectly with the flaky bits of pastry.

Trader Joe's scalloped cracker trio might prove to be divisive on a cheese plate.

Trader Joe's scalloped cracker trio had rosemary, red-chili, and garlic flavors.

Ted Berg

Many people eat crackers straight from a box, but I usually prefer them crumbled into soup or used as a vessel for a spread.

Though these crackers come in rosemary, red-chili, and garlic flavors, my family wasn't exactly thrilled to try Trader Joe's scalloped cracker trio.

I had fun experimenting with different cheese-and-cracker pairings.
Several light-brown and tan scalloped crackers on a black cutting board
Trader Joe's scalloped crackers were actually pretty hearty.

Ted Berg

The crackers were a bit thicker and less crunchy than the kinds we usually like.

That being said, they were heartier, and I could see them holding up on a charcuterie tray, especially if dipped into an antipasto spread.

Trader Joe's fried olive bites reminded me of another classic appetizer.
Green box of Trader Joe's fried-olive bites on a gray counter
Right off the bat, I thought Trader Joe's fried olive bites looked like jalapeΓ±o poppers.

Ted Berg

Trader Joe's fried olive bites looked like a simple variation of jalapeΓ±o poppers.

When I air-fried them, a lot of the cheese filling oozed out onto the appliance's tray.

The olive flavor was very powerful.
Trader Joe's fried-olive bites served on a white plate alongside a red sauce
Trader Joe's fried olive bites would be a great appetizer for fans of the briny snack.

Ted Berg

I expected a full olive stuffed with cheese, but these were more like breaded and fried cheese-filled balls of olive tapenade.

If you truly love the flavor of olives, this is the appetizer for you.

Trader Joe's holiday vegetable hash comes with a myriad of vegetables and herbs.
Clear container of Trader Joe's vegetable holiday hash with a pink label on a gray counter
Trader Joe's holiday vegetable hash has a selection of chopped squash, potatoes, onions, celery, and herbs.

Ted Berg

The label on Trader Joe's holiday hash suggests using the mix of diced butternut squash, sweet potato, red onion, and celery in soups and stuffings.

I sautΓ©ed the hash to use as a side dish.

The hash would be a better ingredient than a side dish.

I'd likely use Trader Joe's holiday hash in a stew.

Ted Berg

The holiday hash was tasty, thanks to the sage's assertive flavor and the squash's sweetness.

However, the slightly mushy hash didn't look the most appetizing, and it even turned off my squash-loving son.

Still, I could imagine it being a time-saver if I was making a wintertime stew.

I was excited to try Trader Joe's uncured bacon-wrapped porchetta pork roast.

Trader Joe's uncured bacon-wrapped porchetta pork roast seemed promising.

Ted Berg

As a porchetta lover, I had high hopes for Trader Joe's uncured bacon-wrapped porchetta pork roast.

Per the instructions, I roasted the pork at 500 degrees Fahrenheit until the bacon was browned and crispy.

This was supposed to take 25 minutes, but the bacon didn't seem that crispy even after 30 minutes in the oven.

I still followed the instructions and lowered the temperature to 325 degrees, as I feared I'd scorch the thing.

By the time it was finished, the inside was a little dry, but the bacon wasn’t very crunchy.

I tried a small slice of Trader Joe's uncured bacon-wrapped porchetta pork roast.

Ted Berg

I enjoy rosemary, but, in my opinion, too much of the herb was stuffed into the pork.

The meat tasted best in a sandwich alongside the holiday vegetable hash, as the vegetables and bread helped cut the rosemary flavor.

Trader Joe's cranberry chevre had pieces of fruit inside the cheese.

Trader Joe's cranberry chevre was packed with fruit.

Ted Berg

I assumed Trader Joe's cranberry chevre would just be goat cheese rolled in sweetened, dried cranberries. However, it looked like the fruit was also whipped into the cheese.

I might have liked the cranberry chevre if it was presented as a dessert.

I'd add Trader Joe's cranberry chevre to a sandwich.

Ted Berg

I didn't find the chevre to have enough of a tangy edge.

It was OK on one of the rosemary crackers from the scalloped cracker trio, but I could also picture it on a sandwich with the porchetta and holiday hash.

Trader Joe's artichoke bread pudding looked interesting.

Trader Joe's artichoke bread pudding seemed like it had a lot going on.

Ted Berg

I didn't know what to expect from Trader Joe's artichoke bread pudding.

Judging from the label, it seemed like a reconfiguration of stuffed artichokes.

The bread pudding also came in an oven-safe casserole dish.

I thought Trader Joe's artichoke bread pudding looked unappetizing and greasy.

Unfortunately, I thought Trader Joe's artichoke bread was unpleasant.

Ted Berg

The oven didn't fix the bread pudding's off-putting appearance, in my opinion.

Taste-wise, it was too heavy and had a strong black-pepper flavor.

It was the type of thing that tasted good on the first bite but was unpleasant by the third.

I wasn't sure how Trader Joe's Portuguese bacalhau tartelettes would taste.

Trader Joe's Portuguese bacalhau tartelettes were made with bechamel, egg yolks, potatoes, and cod.

Ted Berg

I wasn't certain if I'd like Trader Joe's Portuguese tarts, which had a filling of bechamel, egg yolks, diced potato, and salted cod.

I tried not to let the "cod custard tarts" label deter me.

To put it gently, bacalhau tarts are not for me.

Trader Joe's Portuguese bacalhau tartelettes wouldn't be a repeat purchase for me.

Ted Berg

We try pretty hard not to waste much food in my household but we didn't even come close to finishing the tarts.

These were a bit like a cream-based seafood chowder embedded in pastry, but they mostly tasted like goopy cod.

I've worked at Costco for 19 years. Here are 10 of the best things I'm seeing on the shelves right now.

6 December 2024 at 11:27

This month, my Costco is carrying a couple of new food items.

Veronica Thatcher

  • This December, Costco is carrying fun and festive food and home goods.
  • The Shark FlexStyle air-styling and drying system would make a great gift.
  • If you're heading to a party, I recommend picking up Costco's holiday-cookie tray.

I've worked at Costco, a leading retailer in customer satisfaction, for 19 years. Throughout my career, I've loved exploring the retailer's rotating stock and bringing home new items for my family.

This December, the store is carrying lots of merchandise that would make great gifts for the holidays, as well as a few cool home goods.

Here are 10 things I recommend checking out at Costco this month.

Prices may vary by location.

Celebrate baking season with the Pillsbury holiday-shape sugar-cookie dough.

I was looking everywhere for the Pillsbury holiday sugar-cookie dough, so I was happy to see this item stocked at my Costco.

Each 60-count box comes with precut, ready-to-bake cookies with Christmas-tree, reindeer, and snowman designs.

At my store, the Pillsbury holiday cookies can be found in the refrigerated section for $8.

My Costco has a new beef-and-pork meatball sandwichΒ with marinara in the deli section.

Veronica Thatcher

This month, my Costco has a new premade item: the beef-and-pork meatball sandwich with marinara.

The sandwich, made with artisanal bread, provolone and Parmesan cheese, and ground beef and pork, is large enough to serve a few people. I recommend heating it in the oven or an air fryer to get a nice, cheesy melt.

This meatball sandwich costs $6 per pound, which comes out to about $13 to $15 total.Β

Heat your home with the Bayside Furnishings infrared electric fireplace stove heater.

The Bayside Furnishings infrared electric fireplace stove heater is relatively compact.

Veronica Thatcher

The Bayside Furnishings heater could be a great winter addition to your home.

The device has a metal frame, an infrared-heating element, a sleep timer, and three flame colors. At 24 inches wide and just over 23 inches tall, it's also compact enough to fit into small spaces.

This electric heater is $125 at my Costco.

The Shark FlexStyle air-styling and drying system could be a great gift for the holidays.

Veronica Thatcher

The Shark FlexStyle air-styling and drying system, which allows users to curl, straighten, smooth, or add volume to their hair with less heat damage, could make the perfect gift.

This set includes two multi-style curlers, a diffuser, a concentrator, paddle and oval brushes, a FrizzFighter finishing tool, and a storage bag to keep everything secure.

The Shark FlexStyle system is regularly $300, but at my location, the set is on sale for $230 until December 24.

The holiday GrinchΒ has been a hot-selling item at my location.

Veronica Thatcher

This month, you can take home your own statue of the Grinch and his dog, Max, designed by artist Jim Shore.

The hand-painted Grinch collectible stands about 20 inches tall and weighs just over 8 pounds. At my Costco, it costs $50.

This month, you can bring Costco's holiday-cookie trayΒ to gatherings.

Veronica Thatcher

Costco's holiday-cookie tray is the perfect dish to bring to parties. Each tray contains 60 cookies in chocolate-chunk, brown-butter-sugar, double-chocolate-chip, double-nut, and candy-gem-chip flavors.

Customers can find the holiday cookies in the bakery section for $25.

Enhance your bedroom or bathroom with the Conair LED double-sided vanity mirror.

This month, you can get ready and illuminate your bathroom or bedroom with the Conair LED double-sided vanity mirror β€” an item that seems to be selling fairly quickly at my Costco.

The model includes a square mirror, an accessory tray, and three touch-control light settings.

At my store, the Conair vanity mirror β€” regularly $30 β€” is on sale for $24 until December 24.

I'd definitely look into the Phantom A10 smart electric scooter.

The Phantom A10 smart electric scooter can reach a top speed of 15.5 miles per hour.

Veronica Thatcher

If you ask me, the Phantom A10, an electric scooter with a 400-watt motor, is one coolest things at Costco right now.

It has puncture-proof tires, cruise control, a top speed of 15.5 miles per hour, and a Gogo Connect companion app. The scooter is also foldable, so it's easy to store.

The Phantom A10 smart electric scooter is $400 at my location.

I think Costco has a great deal on the Dr. Squatch natural bar soap.

Veronica Thatcher

This month, my Costco is carrying a variety pack of the Dr. Squatch all-natural bar soap. Each pack contains six bars of soap with two of each scent: wood-barrel bourbon, fresh falls, and pine tar.

I was excited to see this soap at Costco because it's a great deal compared to the prices I've seen at other retailers. At my store, a pack of Dr. Squatch natural bar soap costs about $20.

Upgrade your closet with the Adidas men's hoodie.

Veronica Thatcher

Costco gets lots of name-brand clothing throughout the year, and this month, my location is carrying the Adidas men's hoodie.

The Adidas hoodies come in blue, gray, and green colors and range from small to 2XL sizes. My Costco even carries matching joggers to complete the outfit.

At my location, each Adidas fleece hoodie is $16.

I was a registered dietitian for 10 years. Here are some of my favorite low-sugar products to get at Trader Joe's.

22 November 2024 at 08:23

When I shop at Trader Joe's, I like to grab ingredients and quick meals that are low in sugar.

Sheena Pradhan

  • I'm a former dietitian who likes to buy items from Trader Joe's that are low in sugar.
  • I combine Trader Joe's English muffins, kale, mushrooms, and eggs for easy breakfast sandwiches.
  • I've been buying the retailer's one-ingredient creamy unsalted peanut butter for years.

As a former dietitian of 10 years, Trader Joe's is one of my favorite places to shop for ingredients and easy, filling snacks β€” I've been going to the retailer for about 15 years now.

Since leaving my career as a dietitian for a marketing job, though, I've started skipping kale and drinking more soda. However, I recently got a high-cholesterol diagnosis, so I'm trying to cut back on high-sugar foods.

Here are some of my favorite things to buy to make low-sugar snacks and meals.

I love having an egg sandwich with vegetables on an English muffin for breakfast.
Composite image of a gray and orange cartons of eggs on a shelf and packages of English muffins with blue packaging on a shelf at Trader Joe's
I get eggs and Trader Joe's classic English muffins to make breakfast sandwiches.

Sheena Pradhan

When I have time to make breakfast, I opt for an egg sandwich with mushrooms and kale on a Trader Joe's classic English muffin for a low-sugar, moderate-carbohydrate meal.

Because I exercise a lot, I try to ensure I'm getting my macros β€” a balance of carbs, fats, and proteins my body needs.

This English muffin has 24 grams of carbohydrates per serving, and the two eggs have about 12 grams of protein.

Trader Joe's has the best one-ingredient peanut butter I've come across at any grocery store.

I've been buying Trader Joe's creamy unsalted peanut butter for years.

Sheena Pradhan

I've stuck with Trader Joe's peanut butter my whole adult life. I use it in homemade protein balls or simply have it with a banana or apple for a quick snack.

I love that this product has only one ingredient β€” dry-roasted peanuts.

Trader Joe's small-curd cottage cheese can be used for both savory and sweet breakfasts.
A hand holding a white and red container of cottage cheese in front of more containers at Trader Joe's
Trader Joe's small-curd cottage cheese is delicious in a high-protein breakfast.

Sheena Pradhan

Not to sound boring, but cottage cheese can be a great high-protein, low-carb breakfast. This particular cottage cheese has 12 grams of protein per serving.

If I want something simple for breakfast, I'll have cottage cheese and fruit. If I'm in the mood for something savory (but don't feel like bringing out a pan), I'll eat it with salsa.

The roasted seaweed snack with sea salt is satisfyingly crunchy.

I think Trader Joe's roasted seaweed snack with sea salt is a delicious potato-chip substitute.

Sheena Pradhan

For me, Trader Joe's seaweed snacks are a perfectly portioned low-carb potato-chip replacement.

They give me the same satisfaction as a handful of chips, and each package contains 3 grams of protein.

The chicken-sausage breakfast bowl is a great option when I'm pressed for time.
A hand holds a yellow box with an image of a chicken-sausage breakfast bowl and a fork on it
Trader Joe's chicken-sausage breakfast bowl comes with scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese.

Sheena Pradhan

I love keeping microwavable breakfast bowls in my freezer for busy weeks when I don't want to deal with dishes.

This breakfast bowl has scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, and cheddar cheese β€” so each serving is mainly protein (32 grams) and fat (27 grams). However, it's important to remember that some fat is not necessarily a bad thing.

Trader Joe's chicken strips are so easy to add to salads.Β
Green, yellow, and blue packages of grilled chicken strips and chunks at Trader Joe's
Trader Joe's chicken strips are already cooked, so they're easy to incorporate into meals.

Sheena Pradhan

Trader Joe's chicken strips are high in protein, and the retailer carries various prepared options: grilled chili-lime, grilled balsamic-vinegar-and-rosemary, plain, and grilled lemon-pepper chicken.

I go through moods when I can eat the same thing for several days or weeks at a time, and these strips, paired with a bag of salad, are a great go-to option when I'm in this routine.Β

I pick up a few Trader Joe's salads for my weekly lunches.
Composite image of a hand holding a bag of Trader Joe's spring mix and a hand holding a plastic container of Trader Joe's classic Greek salad
When I need a quick lunch, I choose from a few Trader Joe's salads.

Sheena Pradhan

I like to pair Trader Joe's broccoli-and-kale slaw with chicken for a low-carb, low-sugar salad.Β I also like the classic Greek salad because it has fiber, protein from feta cheese, and little sugar.Β

Additionally, the lemon-basil pasta salad is pretty low in carbohydrates and sugar (considering it's made with pasta), with only 26 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of sugar per serving.Β

The Sunset Sprinkles teeny tiny tomatoes are cute and delicious.

I add the Sunset Sprinkles teeny tiny tomatoes to salads.

Sheena Pradhan

On my latest trip, I wanted fresh veggies and dip, so I opted for these teeny tiny tomatoes to pair with a dressing.

These look and taste like tiny heirloom tomatoes and are great in salads. Because they're so small, they don't even need to be sliced.

Trader Joe's carries a few low-sugar dressing options β€” this week, I went with the Green Goddess dressing.Β

I grabbed chevre with honey to include in a nutritious, satisfying snack.
A hand holds a package of Trader Joe's chevre with honey in front of a shelf of cheese
Trader Joe's chevre with honey is perfect for a sweet snack.

Sheena Pradhan

I couldn't resist buying figs when I saw them, so I impulse-purchased this cheese to pair with them.

Though I was craving a sweet snack, my Trader Joe's also carries goat's-milk cheese without honey.

Sometimes, I mix things up with a stir-fry containing Trader Joe's squiggly knife-cut-style noodles.

I combined Trader Joe's squiggly knife-cut-style noodles and wild, raw Argentinian red shrimp for a quick meal.

Sheena Pradhan

Trader Joe's squiggly noodles take only four minutes to boil. They come with soy-and-sesame-sauce packets, though I also like to pair them with a high-protein peanut sauce or Trader Joe's crunchy chili-onion topping.

This week, I used the noodles in a stir fry. To make the dish, I sautΓ©ed a few vegetables and baked Trader Joe's wild, raw Argentinian red shrimp on a sheet pan for 25 minutes.

I tossed everything together in the same pot and had leftovers for the rest of the week.
