I'm a retired personal trainer on a Mediterranean diet. I swear by these 11 buys from Trader Joe's.

5 May 2025 at 06:44
Hand holding Trader Joe's organic coconut milk in store
I try to mostly follow a Mediterranean diet and buy a lot of my staples at Trader Joe's.

Susan Dawson-Cook

  • My husband and I stay active and buy groceries for our Mediterranean-style diet at Trader Joe's.
  • We keep Trader Joe's pico de gallo salsa, 21 Seasoning Salute, and organic coconut milk on hand.
  • We like Trader Joe's three-layer hummus and Asian-style vegetable stir fry, too.

I'm a retired personal trainer in my 60s living in Tucson, Arizona, with my husband. We both live active lifestyles.

I'm also a certified yoga instructor, swimmer, and author who's published four fitness books β€” including "Fitter Than Ever at 60 and Beyond." My husband regularly swims, lifts weights, runs, and practices yoga.

To support our healthy habits, we try to eat a Mediterranean diet rich in lean protein, eggs, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

We like shopping at Costco with our executive membership, and we also buy a lot of staples at Trader Joe's.

Here are some products from the chain that we swear by.

We always keep crunchy almond butter in our pantry.

I like the simple ingredients of Trader Joe's crunchy almond butter.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Celery sticks spread with crunchy almond butter is one of my favorite lunch sides.

I buy Trader Joe's unsalted almond butter because it only contains almonds β€” no inflammatory oils or sweeteners β€” which often appear in other brands.

A 16-ounce jar of Trader Joe's chunky almond butter cost us $6.

Trader Joe's colossal olives stuffed with garlic cloves are a great snack.

Susan Dawson-Cook

These garlic-stuffed olives from Trader Joe's are a fairly light and delicious pre-dinner snack, especially when paired with cheese.

A 16-ounce jar of Trader Joe's colossal olives cost $4.50 on this trip.

The olives pair well with baby Swiss.

Susan Dawson-Cook

We usually pair our olives with a few thin slices of baby Swiss cheese.

It usually costs about $5 per pound at Trader Joe's.

Three-layer hummus is delicious.

Hummus can pair with almond crackers.

Susan Dawson-Cook

I like that this three-layer dip contains tasty layers of traditional hummus, cilantro-jalapeΓ±o hummus, and spicy hummus.

It pairs nicely with blue-corn tortilla chips or almond crackers.

We usually pay $4 for a 12-ounce container of this dip from Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's Asian-style vegetable stir fry is easy to turn into a full meal.

The vegetable stir fry is convenient.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Trader Joe's Asian-style vegetable stir-fry mix includes snap peas, mushrooms, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, and more.

I like cooking these pre-chopped veggies in olive oil with a protein, like lean ground turkey, to whip up a satisfying dinner within minutes.

The 18-ounce bowl of veggies costs $5.50.

We use pico de gallo salsa in a few ways.

Trader Joe's pico de gallo salsa can be found in the refrigerator section of the store.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Trader Joe's pico de gallo salsa contains fresh-tasting ingredients like tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeΓ±os, and lemon juice.

It's a delicious side with any meal, and we sometimes add it to scrambled eggs for extra flavor or use as it as a dip with blue-corn tortilla chips.

A 12-ounce container of Trader Joe's pico de gallo salsa cost us $3.

Dolmas can be a nice snack before lunch or dinner.

Trader Joe's dolmas vine leaves stuffed with rice are vegan.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Popular in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, dolmas are grapevine leaves typically stuffed with rice, onion and seasonings.

We like the ones from Trader Joe's, which are especially nice as a light appetizer before lunch or dinner.

A 9.86-ounce can of Trader Joe's dolmas cost us $3.50.

Green tea is a staple.

I like drinking green tea with breakfast.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Green tea is high in antioxidants, and I often drink it with breakfast.

A box of 20 bags of Trader Joe's green tea cost $3 on our last trip.

Trader Joe's 21 Seasoning Salute is great to have on hand.

We use Trader Joe's 21 Seasoning Salute to add flavor to proteins.

Susan Dawson-Cook

We like using Trader Joe's 21 Seasoning Salute on meat, poultry, or fish that we cook outside on our grill.

The spice blend contains a flavorful mix of ingredients like onion, black pepper, celery seed, cayenne, parsley, basil, and oregano.

A 2.2-ounce bottle of it cost us $2.50.

My husband loves mochi ice cream.

Susan Dawson-Cook

Trader Joe's mochi ice cream is a hit with my husband, who especially enjoys the vanilla and dark-chocolate flavors.

These tasty gluten-free treats are essentially a chewy rice dough filled with ice cream.

A package of six vanilla mochi usually costs us $5 at Trader Joe's.

Organic coconut milk is the key ingredient in one of my favorite sauces.

Susan Dawson-Cook

We regularly eat baked wild salmon with a dill and lemon sauce.

One of the sauce's key ingredients is coconut milk, which adds a nice creaminess to the dish without making it too heavy.

A 13-Β½ -ounce can of Trader Joe's organic coconut milk costs just under $2.

I work 70 hours a week. I get these 11 groceries at Trader Joe's when I don't have the time or energy to cook.

28 April 2025 at 05:32
The author's cart of Trader Joe's products, including lamb vindaloo, chicken shawarma, a lemony arugula basil salad kit, garden vegetable soup, and more.
As a busy professional working 70 hours a week, I love quick, easy meals from Trader Joe's.

Tracy Abiaka

  • I work 70 hours a week and often don't have the time or energy to prepare meals.
  • Trader Joe's selection of ready-to-eat and frozen meals are a lifesaver.
  • I love the brand's fiery chicken vindaloo and salted edamame.

Between my remote role in financial services and freelance jobs, I spend about 70 hours working each week. So, I often have limited time and energy for cooking meals.

Thankfully, I've been shopping at Trader Joe's for five years and love the brand's wide range of pre-prepared and frozen foods.

Low-calorie, high-protein meals that only require a microwave or a bowl are always in my cart. They help get me through the week without spending too much time prepping or money ordering takeout.

I usually spend about $70 a week on groceries at Trader Joe's. From salads and internationally inspired fare to sweet treats, here are some of my top workweek picks.

Trader Joe's lemony arugula basil salad kit comes ready to eat.

I like the pungent taste of the arugula.

Tracy Abiaka

This zesty salad includes arugula, shaved carrots, almonds, Parmesan cheese, and basil lemon dressing for a light, healthy meal.

Simply dump the ingredients into a bowl, and it's ready to eat.

I love the vegan pad see ew.
A box of Trader Joe's Pad See Ew. The description says, "Stir-fried Thai rice noodles with vegetables, tofu and soy sauce."
Trader Joe's pad see ew tastes like I could've ordered it at a Thai restaurant.

Tracy Abiaka

Trader Joe's pad see ew is a vegan take on the popular rice noodle dish.

Stir-fried with carrots, broccoli, tofu, and soy sauce, it's richly flavored and arguably tastes close to what I'd order from a Thai restaurant.

Trader Joe's chicken shawarma bowl keeps me full for hours.
Trader Joe's chicken shawarma bowl.
I consider Trader Joe's chicken shawarma bowl my power bowl.

Tracy Abiaka

With 400 calories, 20 grams of protein, and 4 grams of fiber, Trader Joe's chicken shawarma bowl is my power meal that keeps me full and energized for hours.

Although nothing truly beats the taste of chicken over rice from a halal truck, this is certainly a decent alternative.

I love all the nutrients I get from the broccoli slaw and kale salad.
A container of Trader Joe's broccoli slaw and kale salad with white chicken meat.
I like that this salad can be eaten directly from the container.

Tracy Abiaka

I swear by Trader Joe's broccoli slaw and kale salad. With shredded cabbage and carrots, it's got a heap of micronutrients. Plus, there are healthy fats from the sunflower seeds and protein from the chicken.

Dried cranberries and a sweet and spicy dressing give the salad a nice tang, too.

One of my favorite meals is the lamb vindaloo.
Multiple boxes of Trader Joe's lamb vindaloo.
Trader Joe's lamb vindaloo isn't too spicy for me.

Tracy Abiaka

Trader Joe's delivers with its line of Indian-inspired microwaveable meals. One of my favorites is the lamb vindaloo.

The tender lamb chunks simmered in curry sauce are a treat to the palate; they're savory and nicely spiced, but not spicy.

I'm also a huge fan of the fiery chicken vindaloo, which packs a punch with its spicy sauce.
A box of Trader Joe's fiery chicken vindaloo.
Trader Joe's spicy chicken vindaloo can be found in the frozen section.

Tracy Abiaka

I also like to grab the spicy chicken vindaloo, which is served on a bed of turmeric rice.

Unlike its lamb counterpart, this one is no joke when it comes to spice. I think it lives up to its name with a very spicy, yet flavorful sauce. Still, it's delicious.

The garlic shiitake green beans are the perfect side dish.
A package of Trader Joe's garlic shiitake green beans.
Green beans help keep me full.

Tracy Abiaka

Smothered in garlic and mushroom sauce, these green beans are a great accompaniment to most meals.

I like that they add to my daily serving of vegetables and have a fiber count substantial enough to curb my hunger.

Trader Joe's spicy lentil wrap is great for a snack or meal.
A container of Trader Joe's spicy lentil wrap.
I pair Trader Joe's spicy lentil wrap with fruit or a salad to make a full meal.

Tracy Abiaka

I like to enjoy the brand's spicy lentil wrap as a quick snack, but sometimes I'll pair it with fruit or a salad to make a meal.

My only gripe is that there's too much tortilla for the amount of filling, but the lentils and tahini sauce taste wonderful.

I love snacking on popcorn with extra virgin olive oil.

The popcorn isn't overly salted.

Tracy Abiaka

Tossed in olive oil and sea salt, Trader Joe's organic popcorn with extra-virgin olive oil is my go-to snack.

It's delightful and crunchy, not oily or overly salty, and it helps holdd me over until my next meal.

Salted edamame is another tried-and-true snack option.
Packages of Trader Joe's salted edamame.
I like to spice up my edamame from Trader Joe's with olive oil and black pepper.

Tracy Abiaka

I like snacking on edamame for some extra protein, fiber, and nutrients.

Trader Joe's frozen salted edamame has a nice flavor. I also drizzle olive oil and black pepper on it for an added kick.

The dark-chocolate peanut-butter cups are one of my favorite sweet treats.

Tracy Abiaka

Rich, smooth, and decadent, Trader Joe's mini dark-chocolate peanut-butter cups are my favorite mood boosters for stressful moments.

Just one velvety morsel is enough to temporarily calm my nerves and satisfy my sweet tooth. Plus, the tiny size of each chocolate makes it easier for me to monitor my servings.

I'm a dietitian on the Mediterranean diet. Here are 12 things I buy at Trader Joe's when I don't feel like cooking.

16 April 2025 at 13:27
A cart full of groceries at trader joes
As a dietitian, I get many of my favorite Mediterranean-diet staples at Trader Joe's when I can find them.

Lauren Manaker

  • I've been a dietitian for over 20 years and follow the Mediterranean diet, but I don't love cooking.
  • Precooked hard-boiled eggs, vegan pesto, and frozen pizza from Trader Joe's make my life easier.
  • I also pick up Envy apples, salmon, and vegan creamy dill dressing to use in a number of meals.

When I tell people I've been a registered dietitian for more than 20 years, the assumption is that I love to eat nutritious foods and cook them myself.

I try to mostly eat balanced and nutrient-dense meals that follow the Mediterranean diet, but I don't enjoy spending time planning, cooking, and cleaning.

Thankfully, Trader Joe's has some gems that help me feed my entire family (including a picky child).

Here are 15 of my must-buys to help create healthy and easy meals without spending too much time in the kitchen.

Editor's Note: Product price and availability may vary.

Envy apples seem to stay fresh longer.

Trader Joe's produce selection varies.

Lauren Manaker

Envy apples can be added to salads, "girl dinners," or lunchboxes for an extra crunch, a boost of fiber, and balanced sweetness.

They're appealing because their insides tend to stay whiter longer, allowing for slicing or chopping without worrying too much about being stuck with discolored fruit.

I buy Norwegian farm-raised salmon for a kick of healthy fats and protein.
hand holding a pack of Norwegian salmon in front of the fish fridge at trader joes
Salmon is a pretty versatile protein.

Lauren Manaker

Salmon from Norway is known for its pure taste, beautiful color, and firm flesh. Much of that is due to its balanced fat content and firm texture.

It's also nutrient-dense, providing essentials such as omega 3; vitamins D, B12, and A; and selenium. Plus, it's incredibly easy to cook, especially if I remember to marinate it the night before.

Clif Bars are my go-to for a boost of energy.

Trader Joe's tends to carry an array of Clif bars.

Lauren Manaker

Not loving to cook also means not loving to prep snacks. But because I live an active lifestyle, I know I need to fuel myself with nutrients such as sustainable carbs before I start a workout.

Clif Bars are crafted with a blend of plant-based protein, fat, and carbohydrates. They're my go-to pre-workout snack that requires zero effort in the kitchen.

The vegan kale, cashew, and basil pesto tastes good on almost everything.

Trader Joe's vegan pesto is one of my favorite buys.

Lauren Manaker

I don't follow a vegan diet, but that doesn't stop me from purchasing Trader Joe's pesto to use on pasta dishes, sandwiches, or as a dip.

This pesto is also my secret ingredient in grilled-cheese sandwiches.

Trader Joe's fruits-and-greens smoothie blend makes morning smoothies a breeze.

Premade blends are great for easy smoothies.

Lauren Manaker

The blend of frozen produce makes my smoothie-making so easy.

There's no chopping or prepping required when I'm in the mood for a breakfast smoothie β€” I simply toss some into a blender, add milk, and turn it on.Β

Vegan creamy dill dressing elevates a slew of dishes.

Trader Joe's has some great vegan dressings and sauces.

Lauren Manaker

If it were socially acceptable to drink Trader Joe's vegan creamy dill dressing with a straw, I'd do it. I love that it's free from fillers or emulsifiers, and the flavor is incredibly satisfying.Β

The obvious way to enjoy this dressing is on top of salad. However, I also use it as a saucy addition to chicken or fish meals, an ingredient in grain-based dishes, and a condiment on sandwiches.

The organic Mediterranean-style salad kit helps us eat more veggies.

Trader Joe's has an array of salad kits available.

Lauren Manaker

Making a salad isn't extremely labor-intensive.

However, opening a salad kit and dumping all of the contents into a bowl is so much easier than procuring and chopping ingredients and coming up with the perfect flavor combo.Β

Trader Joe's Mediterranean salad kit is packed with veggies and a corresponding dressing packet. I love pairing it with protein and starch for a balanced and healthy meal.

Trader Joe's prepackaged veggie mixes come in handy.

Some mixes have asparagus and mushrooms.

Lauren Manaker

Veggies are a must at dinnertime in my house. Having prewashed and cut veggie and produce kits, such as the Trader Joe's asparagus sautΓ©, makes cooking dinner a breeze.

Simply open the package and sautΓ© everything in some extra-virgin olive oil.Β

The bulgur pilaf with butternut squash and feta cheese is an easy side dish.

Trader Joe's frozen grains can be easy to cook.

Lauren Manaker

Whole grains can be both nutritious and filling. For those who don't like spending too much time in the kitchen, cooking them can be a tedious task.

Precooked frozen grains, such as Trader Joe's bulgur pilaf, help save a ton of time because they just need to be heated through.

Plus, this one is made with butternut squash, and I like the boost of veggies in every bite.

Riced cauliflower stir-fry is a great base for a low-carb meal.

Trader Joe's riced cauliflower stir-fry is fairly low-carb.

Lauren Manaker

Trader Joe's precooked cauliflower rice is a perfect base for a low-carb meal. I just add a protein for a complete dish.Β

For people who don't love cauliflower rice β€” but tolerate it because they want to include more veggies in their diet (such as my husband) β€” mixing this dish with some regular rice can offer the best of both worlds.

Hard-boiled eggs are a secret shortcut in my kitchen.
hand holding a bag of premade hard boiled eggs in front of a fridge at trader joes
I grab already cooked and peeled hard-boiled eggs when I find them.

Lauren Manaker

Precooked and shelled hard-boiled eggs make for an easy breakfast protein, salad topping, or sandwich addition.

Trader Joe's Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates is my solution for pizza night.
brie and tomato pizza in the freezer aisle at trader joes
When I can find it, I grab Trader Joe's Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates.

Lauren Manaker

Yes, even dietitians want to have pizza night once in a while.

Trader Joe's frozen Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates satisfies the fiercest pizza craving. Plus, heating it up takes less time than we'd spend waiting for a pie to be delivered from the local pizzeria.

I enjoy one serving along with a side salad for a full meal.Β

I'm a former line cook who loves to shop at Trader Joe's. Here are 7 items I always buy for my partner and me.

Greek yogurt and pancake bread are two of the best things I buy at Trader Joe's.

Amalia Rizos

  • I'm a former line cook who recently transitioned to the corporate world.
  • I rely on Trader Joe's for fresh, flavorful, and affordable products.
  • I always grab fresh vegetables, Greek yogurt, and frozen meals when shopping at the store.

As a former line cook, it's probably no surprise that I enjoy cooking. Now that I've entered the corporate world, though, it's more important than ever to keep my fridge stocked with meals that keep me fueled and focused.

That's why I love shopping at Trader Joe's for fresh, flavorful, and affordable products. Here are seven of my favorite things to get there.

I always like to keep baby broccoli in my fridge.

Amalia Rizos

When I shop at Trader Joe's, I always go for the vegetables first, and baby broccoli is one of the many staples I grab.

My partner and I enjoy it roasted with olive oil, salt, pepper, and lemon juice. It's one of those vegetables that always does its job with minimal fuss.

Sugar snap peas make the perfect snack.

Cooking in a restaurant taught me that a plate is never complete without a garnish. So, I always grab a package of Trader Joe's organic chives to liven up my meals.

I love Trader Joe's Greek yogurt.

Trader Joe's Greek yogurt makes a creamy, sweet, and satisfying breakfast. Before indulging, I like to stir chia seeds into my container, allowing them to plump up in the yogurt's richness.

Trader Joe's vegetable samosas are my kryptonite, with their crispy exterior and spicy, savory filling. I aim to keep two to three boxes in my freezer at all times.

Whenever Trader Joe's has cauliflower gnocchi in stock, I grab a bag.

Amalia Rizos

Last year, my nearest Trader Joe's store chronically sold out of cauliflower gnocchi. So, I'm always happy to find them now.

I like to lightly fry the gnocchi with Trader Joe's chile-lime seasoning, making them reminiscent of bang-bang cauliflower.

Trader Joe's pancake bread tastes like Sunday brunch.

We buy a lot of our favorite groceries at Trader Joe's now that my husband works there.

  • We started buying a lot of our groceries at Trader Joe's once my husband began working there.
  • The chain's frozen mac and cheese and fried rice are perfect for our busy lifestyle.
  • We find Trader Joe's meats, produce, and wines are high quality but not too pricey.

Ever since my husband started working at Trader Joe's, our grocery hauls have completely changed.

The chain has so many convenient, high-quality, and affordable options that we find ourselves stocking up on the same must-haves week after week.

From frozen favorites to pantry staples, here are the Trader Joe's products we can't live without right now.

We use Trader Joe's Dutch griddle cakes to make fast-food-style breakfast sandwiches at home.

These fluffy griddle cakes are the secret to our homemade version of popular fast-food breakfast sandwiches.

Add an egg and some Trader Joe's chicken breakfast sausage, and you've got a protein-packed breakfast in minutes. The cakes are also good on their own and easy to heat up in a toaster or microwave.

Frozen mac and cheese is a staple at our house.

The centerpiece of most meals my husband cooks is some sort of meat, so we buy it regularly. Fortunately, Trader Joe's offers an impressive selection of it at competitive prices.

I've been impressed by the quality of the meat we've gotten at the chain, so we grab beef, poultry, or pork on each shopping trip.

Plantain chips are our ultimate anytime snack.

Trader Joe's plantain chips deliver when the craving hits for something salty, sweet, and crunchy.

Made with just three ingredients β€” plantains, sunflower oil, and saltβ€” these chips are my guilt-free, go-to snack.

We always keep a few bags on hand for road trips, late-night cravings, and afternoon desk snacks. If you prefer a little kick, try Trader Joe's jerk-style plantain chips.

Ice-cream sandwiches are some of our favorite perfectly portioned treats.

We no longer order takeout since Trader Joe's has such good frozen alternatives.

We've been so impressed by Trader Joe's frozen foods inspired by other countries that we rarely order takeout these days.

Trader Joe's soup dumplings and fried rice are some of our favorite buys. Both dishes deliver on flavor and cost far less than if we'd ordered them from a restaurant.

For us, these heat-and-eat options are a game changer for busy nights when cooking from scratch isn't an option.

A few things from the produce section are always in our cart.

We use Goddess dressing as way more than just a salad topper.

Jennifer Krosche Moreno

Trader Joe's Goddess dressing is a staple for us. It's fantastic on salads or as a veggie dip. We also like using it to upgrade pasta or tuna salad.

It's one of the most versatile condiments we own and a great value, as a little goes a long way in terms of flavor.

Breaded chicken tenderloin breasts are the star of some quick meals in our house.

Infused with eucalyptus and other botanicals, Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle products leave our hair feeling soft and clean. I like how they make our hair smell, too.

A little bit of these goes a long way, which makes them a great value for us.

We regularly grab a bottle from Trader Joe's excellent wine section.

We love Trader Joe's budget-friendly wine section that's filled with tasty, high-quality options.

Jennifer Krosche Moreno

I think Trader Joe's wine selection is unbeatable in terms of value and quality.

Whether we need a bottle for a special occasion, a hostess gift, or something to pair with dinner, there's always an affordable option that tastes like it cost way more than it actually did.

There are a lot of bottles available for under $20, and many cost less than $10.

  • Trader Joe's shredded hash browns are perfect for a homemade brunch.
  • Impossible chicken nuggets and Trader Joe's vegetable fried rice make great filling meals.

As someone who works remotely from my Brooklyn apartment, I value quick, easy-to-prep lunches and snacks to keep me full throughout the day.

Once or twice a month, I go to Trader Joe's to stock up on vegetarian staples, frozen foods, and shelf-stable products.

Here are some of my favorite items to buy that keep me fed and fueled up through the workday.

Trader Joe's frozen vegetable fried rice has a spot of honor in my freezer. I usually spruce it up with some extra chopped vegetables, an egg or two, some edamame, and a drizzle of Sriracha.

It takes less than 10 minutes to make, is just as good as takeout, and costs much less than a lunch special at local restaurants.

I've found that Trader Joe's bags of frozen fruit are much cheaper than those at other grocery stores near me.

I drink a lot of midday smoothies, so it makes financial sense to stock up on my beloved frozen berries and mango chunks at Trader Joe's.

Greek yogurt is a versatile staple.
A container of Trader Joe's plain Greek yogurt made with whole milk.
I use Trader Joe's plain Greek yogurt to make a savory sauce.

Yonit Friedman

Trader Joe's plain Greek yogurt can be used in so many different meals. In my opinion, it's as good with granola and fruit as it is a base for a savory sauce, mixed up while I roast a tray of vegetables and legumes in the oven.

I can never have too many cans of beans.
Two cans of Trader Joe's beans in a red shopping cart.
Canned beans are a versatile pantry staple.

Yonit Friedman

I go through enough cans of beans that they're worth lugging home on the subway. I like roasting chickpeas with olive oil, salt, and spices for a crunchy snack.

Recently, I also cooked a delicious white bean soup for dinner and used the leftovers for my lunch the next day.

Trader Joe's shredded potato hash browns are perfect for homemade brunch.

I add an egg, shredded cheese, and some hot sauce to Trader Joe's shredded potato hash browns.

Yonit Friedman

I love frying up Trader Joe's shredded potato hash browns with an egg, some shredded cheese, and a few shakes of hot sauce.

If I have kale on hand, I'll shred some and cook it on top of the potatoes to add a green vegetable.

Impossible chicken nuggets aren't just for kids.

Impossible chicken nuggets have 13 grams of protein per serving.

Yonit Friedman

Do these plant-based chicken nuggets make me feel a bit like an 8-year-old vegetarian? Yes.

But are they a good source of protein for when I remember I'm going to the gym after work and should eat accordingly? Also yes.

I like to make these delicious nuggets in my toaster oven.

Freeze-dried fruit makes oatmeal more fun.
Bags of Trader Joe's freeze-dried raspberries and strawberries.
Trader Joe's freeze-dried strawberries add great texture to oatmeal.

Yonit Friedman

If you can't tell, I love having breakfast foods for lunch. Oatmeal takes just a few minutes to make, is so filling, and is a real choose-your-own-adventure when it comes to toppings.

I love adding Trader Joe's freeze-dried strawberries, which add great flavor and texture. If I want more of an apple pie flavor, I'll cook the oats in applesauce instead of water or milk and mix in some cinnamon and nutmeg.

Sometimes, I even add some Greek yogurt and nuts for a tasty and filling lunch.

Trader Joe's Sublime ice cream sandwiches make the perfect snack.

Yonit Friedman

The Sublime ice cream sandwiches make me feel like a kid eating a Chipwich on the beach β€” even when it's 1 p.m., and I'm about to join a Zoom meeting.

These ice cream sandwiches are my favorite single-serve frozen treat from Trader Joe's.

I'm a dietitian who shops at Trader Joe's. Here are 8 things I'm buying this month to eat more protein and fiber.

21 February 2025 at 05:47
composite image of egg wraps form trader joes and salmon burgers from trader joes
Trader Joe's has a number of products that make it easy for me to get enough protein and fiber.

Shyla Cadogan

  • As a dietitian, I prioritize protein and fiber to stay full and keep my blood-sugar levels stable.
  • Trader Joe's has a stellar selection of simple foods that help me eat more protein and fiber.
  • The precooked lentils, frozen salmon burgers, and marinated chicken thighs make meals easy.

As a registered dietitian, protein and fiber are two of my top nutrition priorities because they help me stay full and promote balanced blood-sugar levels.

Trader Joe's is one of my favorite places to shop when I need to stock my kitchen with easy, filling foods that pack both nutrients.

Here are some of my favorite things to buy at Trader Joe's.

Frozen edamame is the ultimate snack.
hand holding up a bag of frozen shelled edamame
Trader Joe's sells edamame in pods and shelled edamame.

Shyla Cadogan

When I want a filling snack that has lots of nutritional value, I opt for frozen edamame. Trader Joe's sells bags of the legume both in the pod and shelled.

It's convenient for a quick snack, but it also makes for a delicious addition to Asian-inspired rice bowls.

One serving contains about 8 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber.

The store's egg wraps are a protein-rich vehicle for fillings.
hand holding up a package of egg wraps from trader joes
Trader Joe's egg wraps have a neutral flavor, so they go well with a lot of things.

Shyla Cadogan

Trader Joe's egg wraps are my favorite option for a higher-protein alternative to tortillas.

They taste pretty neutral, so they take on the flavor of whatever you choose to fill them with. Some days I use them for savory meals such as tacos, and other times, I use them as a base for a sweet snack of Greek yogurt and jam.

Two wraps contain 8 grams of protein.

Plain Greek yogurt is great for breakfast bowls and homemade sauces.
hand holding up a container of greek yogurt at trader joes
I buy plain Greek yogurt, but Trader Joe's also sells flavored varieties.

Shyla Cadogan

It may not be the most exciting thing on the list, but Trader Joe's plain, nonfat Greek yogurt is essentially pure protein. One serving contains 17 grams.

I often use it as a base for breakfast bowls to help keep me full and energized for my day.

Greek yogurt is also a great creamy base for homemade sauces. I like to make a burger sauce with yogurt, ketchup, mustard, and chopped pickles.

Trader Joe's steamed lentils are a game changer.
hand holding up a box of steamed lentils at trader joe's
Trader Joe's steamed lentils are ready-to-eat.

Shyla Cadogan

Trader Joe's steamed lentils are excellent because they're already cooked. That means I can get all of the wonderful nutritional benefits of eating legumes without the effort of soaking and cooking them.

I like to prepare a lentil salad with cherry tomatoes, feta cheese, and Greek dressing for an easy and satisfying lunch. I also enjoy popping them in the microwave and plating them up as a simple side dish for a warm dinner.

Each serving packs 10 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber.

Rolled oats are a pantry staple.
hand holding up a bag of rolled oats from trader joes
Trader Joe's rolled oats are gluten-free.

Shyla Cadogan

Trader Joe's rolled oats are a must-have in my pantry. I love that they have 5 grams of fiber per serving.

They're super easy to whip together in just a few minutes and are an awesome base for whatever flavors you like β€” sweet or savory.

If I'm going sweet, I like to add vanilla protein powder to bolster the 6 grams of protein in each serving of the oats.

Shawarma chicken thighs elevate my typical weeknight dinners.
hand holding upa. package of shwarma chicken thighs at trader joe's
I like that Trader Joe's shawarma chicken thighs come pre-marinated, so they're ready to cook.

Shyla Cadogan

Chicken is my protein of choice at dinner, but preparing it in the same few ways can get boring.

Trader Joe's marinated shawarma chicken thighs help me switch things up, thanks to the savory and delicious spice blend.

They pack 21 grams of protein per serving and pair well with rice, salad, and hummus for a satisfying yet balanced meal.

I pick up Trader Joe's chicken meatballs once a week.
hand holdign up a pack of chicken meatballs at trader joes
Trader Joe's chicken meatballs come precooked.

Shyla Cadogan

The store's chicken meatballs are high in protein and flavor.

I like to throw them in a pasta dish or pop them into the air fryer to serve with rice and a veggie. They're fully cooked, so all I have to do is heat them through.

A serving of four meatballs contains a whopping 16 grams of protein.

The chain's premium salmon burgers are one of my top picks for a low-effort lunch.
hand holding upa. box of frozen salmon burgers at trader joe's
I can quickly whip up one of Trader Joe's salmon burgers for lunch.

Shyla Cadogan

If you want to eat more seafood but don't want a dish that tastes too fishy, try Trader Joe's frozen salmon burgers. Each patty has 15 grams of protein.

I like that they don't need to be thawed before cooking, which makes things easier on busy work-from-home days when I need a quick lunch.

After cooking the patty on the stovetop, I assemble my burger with arugula, red onion, and some sort of sauce.

I'm a busy mom who swears by Trader Joe's frozen section. Here are 10 of my favorite items to stock up on.

12 February 2025 at 07:41
The writer Andrea McHigh wearing a blue coat and holding a red Trader Joe's basket and a box of chocolate-drizzled desserts in the frozen aisle at Trader Joe's
I love browsing the frozen food section at Trader Joe's.

Andrea McHugh

  • As a busy mom, I sometimes rely on Trader Joe's to create delicious meals for my family.
  • We love Italian-inspired dishes like the sweet-potato gnocchi and butternut-squash lasagna.
  • When I want something sweet, I reach for the green-tea mochi.

I love to cook meals from scratch, but as a busy mom, there are some days where I just don't have the time.

Over the years, I've found lots of tried-and-true frozen meals from Trader Joe's that come in handy when there's not enough time to labor over the stove.

Here are 10 frozen foods I never leave the store without buying.

Trader Joe's sweet-potato gnocchi is soft, pillowy, and filling.Β
An orange and green bag with an image of a bowl of Trader Joe's sweet-potato gnocchi on the front
Trader Joe's sweet-potato gnocchi comes with a delicious, buttery sage sauce.

Andrea McHugh

Trader Joe's sweet-potato gnocchi with butter and sage is an amazing comfort food. The soft gnocchi perfectly sops up the rich, buttery sage sauce.

Best of all, the sweet-potato gnocchi takes about 10 minutes to cook and serve. I like to garnish the dish with fresh sage and serve it with warm, crusty bread.

We typically prefer to eat this vegetarian dish on its own, but you can easily add chicken, sausage, or another protein.

When it's in stock, the butternut-squash lasagna is a perfect meat-free comfort food.Β
An orange and white box with an image of butternut-squash lasagna, with breadcrumbs and pumpkin seeds on top of it
Trader Joe's butternut-squash lasagna is made with pumpkin seeds and herbs.

Andrea McHugh

Though frozen lasagna doesn't sound all that exciting, Trader Joe's butternut-squash version is an elevated rendition of the Italian staple.

The butternut-squash-bΓ©chamel sauce, made with carrots and butter, is velvety and slightly smoky. The pumpkin seeds, chives, rosemary, and pepper also give the dish a flavorful punch, making it a nice alternative to the typical pasta and tomato sauce.Β

Trader Joe's butternut-squash lasagna only takes about 10 minutes in the microwave, but if you have the time, I recommend popping it in the oven to get it perfectly crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside.

I found Trader Joe's gnocchi al Gorgonzola surprisingly delicious.
Downward angle of a yellow bag of Trader Joe's gnocchi al gorgonzola, with an image of yellow gnocchi in a white bowl, in a freezer
Trader Joe's gnocchi al Gorgonzola is super easy to prepare.

Andrea McHugh

This gnocchi is super easy to prepare β€” simply add the bag's contents and some oil to a skillet. I like to jazz this dish up with vegetables like peas, tomatoes, and spinach, or proteins such as pancetta, sausage, or chicken.Β

Trader Joe's Thai vegetable gyoza is a vegan delight.Β
A hand holding a green and black bag with an image of Thai vegetable gyoza in a black pan on the front
I love making Trader Joe's Thai vegetable gyoza in a cast-iron skillet.

Andrea McHugh

Trader Joe's vegetable gyoza is stuffed with white cabbage, carrots, chives, white radish, onion, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce. These crescent-shaped dumplings can be steamed, microwaved, or pan-fried.

I like to brown the wrappers in a cast-iron skillet for a slight crunch β€” all you need is a little oil and water. I serve these with extra soy sauce for dipping, steamed rice, and simple stir-fried vegetables.Β

The bean, rice, and cheese burritos make a great lunch or dinner.
Bird's-eye-view of a container of two burritos with a green label with white and orange text spelling out "bean, rice, and cheese burritos" and an illustration of a burrito on the front
I like to add enchilada sauce to Trader Joe's bean, rice, and cheese burritos.

Andrea McHugh

My 9-year-old loves Mexican-inspired food as much as I do, and she's a big fan of Trader Joe's bean, rice, and cheese burritos.

Though this two-pack can be prepared in the microwave, I think the burritos taste so much better baked in the oven, especially with enchilada sauce. Once they've cooked through, I add shredded cheese and broil the dish to give the simple meal a restaurant feel.Β

I recommend pairing the burritos with Spanish rice and black beans for a complete, inexpensive meal.Β

The vegetable bird's nests look beautiful when plated.Β
A hand holding a box of a close-up image of vegetable bird's nests on a green plate with a bowl of sauce in the background
Trader Joe's vegetable bird's nests are tasty and light.

Andrea McHugh

These nest-shaped combinations of onions, carrots, and kale come fully cooked, so all you need to do is heat them and serve.

They can be deep fried, but I prefer to air-fry or bake them on a cookie sheet.

The package also comes with soy dipping sauce, which I defrost by submerging it in a mug of hot water.

The salsa-verde chicken enchiladas are zesty and delicious.Β

Trader Joe's salsa-verde chicken enchiladas pair well with beans, cheese, or guacamole.

Andrea McHugh

These chicken enchiladas come with salsa verde made with tomatillos and green chiles. I like how the shredded chicken really lets the chile flavor come through.

They're great with cilantro, brown rice, beans, and some shredded cheese or guacamole.

I like to grab Trader Joe's frozen organic fruit for smoothies.

I love Trader Joe's frozen organic raspberries, blueberries, and mango.

Andrea McHugh

I love the convenience of smoothies, so I always stock up on Trader Joe's organic frozen fruit. My favorites are the organic raspberries, wild blueberries, and mango chunks.

The mini French baguettes are one of the store's best items.Β
A white and beige package with an image of small French baguettes in a bowl with paper next to a clear cup holding pads of butter on the front
If I can't get fresh bread, I pick up Trader Joe's mini French baguettes.

Andrea McHugh

I'm lucky to live near a bakery β€” but they often sell out of baguettes before noon. When this happens, I turn to Trader Joe's mini French baguettes.Β

They're already partially baked, so they only need four to six minutes in the oven to get soft, chewy, and crisp on the outside.

They're the perfect accompaniment to a hearty winter soup, stew, or slow-cooked meal.Β

Trader Joe's green-tea mochi is the perfect sweet treat.
A bright-green box of mochi green-tea ice cream with an image of two ice-cream desserts on the front
Trader Joe's green-tea mochi is chewy and sweet.

Andrea McHugh

When it comes to desserts, Trader Joe's has some unique finds, like this six-count box of green-tea mochi. These chewy bites contain soft, flavorful green-tea ice cream in the center, perfect for satisfying a sweet tooth.

These are best enjoyed when taken out of the freezer to defrost for a few minutes before eating (if you can resist the wait).

I'm a professional meal planner. Here are 10 of my favorite Trader Joe's products for easy, healthy dinners.

18 January 2025 at 04:56

When I need supplies for healthy meal prep, I go to Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

  • I'm a recipe developer and meal-prep expert, and I rely on Trader Joe's.
  • My favorite products are the ones that save me time in the kitchen.
  • Its preprepared plant-based proteins and vegetables make it easy for me to eat healthy.

As a recipe developer, meal-prep expert, and mom of three, I make dinner at least five nights a week β€” but I don't have hours to spend in the kitchen.

Trader Joe's array of specialty items, variety of plant-based options, and bounty of preprepared ingredients make it easy for me to cook healthy dinners that taste delicious.

Here are some of my favorite Trader Joe's products for planning nutritious meals with ease.

The vegan salad dressings taste better than homemade.

We love all the vegan salad dressings at Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

My kids can't believe these flavorful Caesar, green-goddess, and creamy-dill dressings in the refrigerated section are completely plant-based. Plus, they have less than 100 calories a serving and are made from simple ingredients.

I'm vegan and the rest of my family isn't, so they're my answer for zhuzhing up steamed vegetables, grain bowls, wraps, and, of course, salads.

Protein-enriched pasta powers up Italian night.

Stephanie Dreyer

I'm always looking for ways to add more protein to meals, and I do so to our noodle dishes by using certain pasta varieties from Trader Joe's.

There are several options for pasta with up to 14 grams of protein a serving, including varieties made with lentils, brown rice, quinoa, and chickpeas.

Beyond pasta night, I also use the noodles to ramp up salads, veggie stir-fries, and curries.

Canned chili saves me time on busy weeknights.

Trader Joe's vegetarian chili also happens to be vegan.

Stephanie Dreyer

Trader Joe's simple can of vegetarian chili is great on nights when I don't feel like cooking. It's vegan, so everyone in my family can enjoy it.

I love that the added pea protein boosts the protein content of the red beans.

I serve it with a variety of toppings so everyone can pick what they like. I'll also use it as a topping for baked potatoes or sweet potato "nachos."

Salad kits can be used for any number of meals.

There are so many salad kits to choose from at Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

There's a wide variety variety of salad kits at Trader Joe's, from sweet-chili mango to pizza ranch.

Sometimes I just follow the package instructions to build a flavorful salad, but the kits have also inspired a number of dinners in my house. I use the Mediterranean kit as a base for falafel bowls and the Southwestern chopped as a pizza topping.

New varieties always seem to be popping up on shelves, creating limitless options for creativity.

Steamed lentils are a meal-prepper's best friend.

Stephanie Dreyer

Preparing beans and legumes can be time-consuming, but they're one of the best plant-based protein sources. So, the prepared lentil package in the refrigerated section at Trader Joe's is a handy staple.

I use it in countless ways β€” to fill taco shells, stir into pasta sauces, and sprinkle on salads, to name a few.

I've also combined the lentils with lemon juice, fresh herbs, and Trader Joe's bruschetta to make a hearty filling for a wrap.

There's so much you can do with a block of tofu.
different blocks of tofu in a cart from trader joe's
There are plain and flavored tofu blocks at Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

Trader Joe's offers a variety of tofu, but the high-protein super-firm, baked teriyaki-flavored, and baked Sriracha-flavored varieties are my favorites.

The pre-seasoned and baked varieties are ready to slice, crumble, or air fry without any prep. Meanwhile, the high-protein tofu can be whipped up for a number of dishes and provides 5 more grams of protein per serving than the store's standard extra-firm block.

Some of my menu highlights include grilled tofu "steaks" topped with chimichurri and breaded tofu sticks served with dipping sauces.

Frozen brown rice saves me time.

Stephanie Dreyer

I always keep a box of Trader Joe's brown rice in my freezer to make easy weeknight meals β€” from grain bowls and stir-fries to burritos and casseroles.

Instead of meal-prepping a big pot of rice at the start of the week, I can just pull out one of these packets and microwave it for four minutes.

I'm also a fan of the store's frozen jasmine rice.

Spiralized veggies are a fun way to level up dishes.
zucchini noodles and butternut squash zigzags in a cart at trader joe's
Zucchini spirals and butternut-squash zig-zags are go-tos at Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

Much to my kids' chagrin, one of the easiest ways to level up the nutrition factor in my family's meals is to add more vegetables.

Luckily, all of us can get behind Trader Joe's fun zucchini spirals and butternut-squash zig-zags.

I toss the spiralized zucchini with protein-enriched spaghetti and use the butternut-squash pieces to replace thicker noodles in soups and casseroles.

Shelled edamame gives meals a protein boost.

I buy the refrigerated shelled edamame at Trader Joe's, but there's also a frozen option.

Stephanie Dreyer

Trader Joe's package of lightly salted edamame is ready to eat, making it a go-to for my Asian-inspired meals.

I sprinkle them into stir-fries, teriyaki bowls, and sushi rolls, but they're also just great for snacking.

We go through the refrigerated package in a week and don't have to worry about it going bad, but there's also a frozen option.

Greek chickpeas add instant flavor with no prep.

Trader Joe's Greek chickpeas come premarinated.

Stephanie Dreyer

Tossed with soybean oil, lemon juice, parsley, salt, cumin, garlic powder, and black pepper, Trader Joe's Greek chickpeas are my shortcut for adding zest and plant protein to meals.

For salads, I skip the dressing and toss the chickpeas directly into the bowl with the juice of a lemon. Or, I'll roast them until crunchy and use them as croutons.

I also love to spoon them over grilled vegetables such as zucchini, cauliflower, and portobello mushrooms.

I try to follow the Mediterranean diet on a tight budget. Here are 7 things I buy at Trader Joe's.

3 January 2025 at 07:31
AuthorAlison Van Glad taking a selfie outside of Trader Joe's
I try to buy affordable staples at Trader Joe's.

Alison Van Glad

  • I'm on a budget and enjoy following a Mediterranean diet using ingredients from Trader Joe's.Β
  • Trader Joe's is my go-to place to buy olive oil and some affordable seasonal veggies.Β
  • I try to keep my kitchen stocked with Mediterranean classics like beans and fresh tomatoes.Β

Each time I travel to the Mediterranean, I find myself falling in love with the food over and over again at every meal.

Many of the dishes are wildly fresh, and the Mediterranean diet emphasizes foods like fresh produce, whole grains, olive oil, fish, legumes, and eggs.

When I return to the US after a trip, I combat post-travel blues by enjoying many of the same foods at home. Fortunately, I've found that I can get many Mediterranean-inspired staples at Trader Joe's at a reasonable price.

Here are some of my favorite buys.

Olive oil is a staple in Mediterranean cooking for a good reason β€” it's simple and delicious.
Trader Joe's extra virgin olive oil on a shelf with $7.49 price tag below
My favorite Trader Joe's olive oil comes in a 16.9-fluid-ounce bottle.

Alison Van Glad

I pick up Italian extra-virgin olive oil at Trader Joe's.

The best quality olive oil is extra virgin, meaning the oil is extracted the first time the olives are pressed for their liquid.

My favorite part about olive oil is its versatility. I use it as a nonstick agent on my pans, a base for sautΓ©eing veggies, and a topper for added garnish and flavor.

Trader Joe's often has a large variety of fresh herbs.
Display of herbs in plastic clamshell packaging at a Trader Joe's
I usually pay just under $2 for an ounce of herbs at Trader Joe's.

Alison Van Glad

When creating my shopping list, I prioritize what I can purchase fresh β€” especially when it comes to herbs.

After all, any dish can be elevated with fresh herbs.

If I know I need to use my herbs over an extended period, I put them in a resealable bag with a damp paper towel in the fridge to help extend their freshness.

A freshly sliced tomato adds the perfect crunch to a sandwich.
Tomatoes on the vine in plastic packages on a shelf at Trader Joe's
The cost varies, but I usually buy my favorite tomatoes on the vine for $2.50.

Alison Van Glad

Trader Joe's has several tomato varieties, from cherry tomatoes for easy snacking to Roma tomatoes for making sauces.

I prefer to purchase tomatoes on the vine because I find they have a longer shelf life. Longevity is a priority because I'm only meal-prepping for one.

I know I can find fresh, in-season produce at my local Trader Joe's.
Eggplants stacked on a display in Trader Joe's above price sign for $1.79
Sometimes I can find eggplant for under $2.

Alison Van Glad

An essential part of the Mediterranean diet is eating whatever fruits and vegetables are in season.

So, I stock up on seasonal vegetables at Trader Joe's, where I find produce in season is often centerstage and reasonably priced.

I also like to check Trader Joe's website for recipe inspiration for my seasonal veggies.

Most of my dishes use onions and garlic.
Shallots and garlic spilling out of baskets on display at Trader Joe's
I try to buy heads of garlic and shallots at Trader Joe's when they're under $1.

Alison Van Glad

There's a reason garlic and onion are classics in Mediterranean cooking: Both are delicious and high in natural antioxidants.

My Trader Joe's carries a wide selection of onions, so I always know it will almost always have the variety I want. However, I also love swapping basic white onions for the more delicately flavored shallot.

I like to dice onion and garlic, sautΓ© them in olive oil, and store them in an airtight container in my fridge to use throughout the week for omelets, veggies, and pasta.

I make sure I'm always stocked up on canned beans.

I use white beans to add protein to some dishes.

Alison Van Glad

I've found that beans are a popular source of protein for the Mediterranean diet.

I use canned beans to whip up quick dips and salads that pair perfectly with fresh sliced bread. Sometimes, I blend them with fresh herbs, pasta water, and lemon juice to make a creamy protein-packed sauce.

Pasta is my favorite comfort food, and Trader Joe's has plenty of varieties of it.

Trader Joe's has a ton of different pasta shapes.

Alison Van Glad

Although not necessarily a crucial part of the Mediterranean diet, pasta is a great base if you want to consume more legumes and veggies. Sometimes, I also top my pasta with a white-bean sauce to create a high-protein dish.

I like to stock up on several different pasta shapes so I never get bored mixing and matching them with new sauces.

I'm vegan, but the rest of my family isn't. We're relying on these 8 tasty Trader Joe's finds right now.

23 December 2024 at 06:37
cart full of holiday products at trader joe's
I've discovered some of Trader Joe's best vegan holiday staples.

Stephanie Dreyer

  • I'm the only vegan in my family, and I stock up on holiday foods everyone can eat at Trader Joe's.
  • Boxed baking mixes take the work out of holiday desserts, and Trader Joe's has some fun ones.
  • Trader Joe's frozen appetizers simplify holiday entertaining at dinners, parties, or gatherings.

As the only vegan in my family, the holidays can be challenging β€” I want everyone to enjoy the festivities without having to sacrifice their favorite foods.

Luckily, the variety of seasonal products at Trader Joe's simplifies hosting without compromising anyone's dietary preferences.

Here are some of my favorite vegan Trader Joe's products for entertaining friends and family this time of year.

Boxed mixes streamline holiday baking.

You can make different baked goods with the gingerbread mix.

Stephanie Dreyer

Whether you're not a baker or just short on time, Trader Joe's multipurpose gingerbread mix is great for making cookies, cakes, bars, and more.

The mix itself is naturally plant-based, and to keep it that way, I use a flax egg and plant-based butter when I prepare it.

Precut vegetables and herbs speed up meal prep.

I look forward to Trader Joe's holiday vegetable hash.

Stephanie Dreyer

In the winter, I rely on Trader Joe's flavorful holiday vegetable hash.

Since the peeling and chopping are already done, I just sautΓ© or roast the mixture of diced butternut squash, sweet potatoes, red onions, celery, parsley, sage, and rosemary before adding it to dishes.

It gives me a headstart on dinner when I'm making stuffing, soup, or side dishes with quinoa and wild rice. The mix also tastes great in breakfast scrambles and burritos.

Peppermint popcorn is an instant hit on the dessert table.

I like the sweet and savory vibes of the peppermint-crunch popcorn.

Stephanie Dreyer

Sweet meets savory in Trader Joe's seasonal peppermint-crunch popcorn, which mixes dark- and white-chocolate-coated kernels tossed in crushed candy canes.

It's great for a holiday dessert table or a cozy movie marathon, but it also makes a nice host gift.

Sometimes, I'll even add it to a larger holiday snack mix or rice-crispy treats for extra festive cheer.

Trader Joe's holiday gummies are just plain fun.

There are multiple festive shapes of gummy candy.

Stephanie Dreyer

It's easy to keep my candy dishes full with Trader Joe's gummy Scandinavian Tidings, which come in all sorts of festive shapes.

I also saw a Festive Chaos candy mix this year. It contains bovine gelatin, so it's not vegan, but the rest of my family can enjoy it.

Aside from snacking, these festive bags make excellent stocking stuffers. You can also use them to decorate gingerbread houses and top holiday cupcakes and cookies.

Candy-cane Joe-Joe's are a must for me every winter.

The regular candy-cane Joe-Joe's are vegan, but the gluten-free variety is not.

Stephanie Dreyer

Perhaps the most anticipated product of the season at Trader Joe's is its candy-cane Joe-Joe's.

The peppermint sandwich cookies are great on a holiday dessert board, chopped and stirred into a bowl of ice cream, crumbled on top of eggnog, and dunked into mugs of hot cocoa.

You could even crush them into bits to make an easy pie crust.

The regular candy-cane Joe-Joe's are "accidentally" vegan β€” meaning they just happen to be fully plant-based. However, the gluten-free version of the cookies may contain milk and eggs, per the ingredient list.

Stuffed olives are a game changer.

There are so many flavors of stuffed olives at Trader Joe's.

Stephanie Dreyer

Zesty lemon-stuffed olives are my top pick for adding flair to cocktails, mezze platters, and charcuterie boards.

The citrusy olives are good as a right-out-of-the-jar snack, but I also skewer them on toothpicks alongside vegan cheese and cocktail tomatoes or chop and swirl them into dips.

If lemon isn't your thing, other stuffed-olive options are available, including garlic and jalapeΓ±o.

Peppermint mini marshmallows add a jolly twist to classic favorites.

Trader Joe's has peppermint mini marshmallows that are vegan-friendly.

Stephanie Dreyer

The vegan peppermint mini marshmallows are something I look forward to all year.

Toast and sandwich them between graham crackers and chocolate for festive s'mores, or melt them with vegan butter for a holiday take on the quintessential rice-crispy treat.

For the ultimate seasonal beverage, I like to include them on my hot-cocoa bars alongside plant-based whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

Trader Joe's frozen appetizers are a huge help.

I just have to throw the vegetable pouches in the oven while I'm prepping other foods.

I check appetizers off my to-do list with Trader Joe's frozen crispy vegetable pouches.

The pockets of pastry dough are filled with jicama, taro, cabbage, carrots, onions, and shiitake mushrooms for an elegant plant-based hors d'oeuvre.

They're seasoned with garlic, soy sauce, ginger, sesame oil, and red chili, adding global flavors to your holiday menu. Plus, they're ready to eat in under 15 minutes.

I was a registered dietitian for 10 years. Here are some of my favorite low-sugar products to get at Trader Joe's.

When I shop at Trader Joe's, I like to grab ingredients and quick meals that are low in sugar.

Sheena Pradhan

  • I'm a former dietitian who likes to buy items from Trader Joe's that are low in sugar.
  • I combine Trader Joe's English muffins, kale, mushrooms, and eggs for easy breakfast sandwiches.
  • I've been buying the retailer's one-ingredient creamy unsalted peanut butter for years.

As a former dietitian of 10 years, Trader Joe's is one of my favorite places to shop for ingredients and easy, filling snacks β€” I've been going to the retailer for about 15 years now.

Since leaving my career as a dietitian for a marketing job, though, I've started skipping kale and drinking more soda. However, I recently got a high-cholesterol diagnosis, so I'm trying to cut back on high-sugar foods.

Here are some of my favorite things to buy to make low-sugar snacks and meals.

I love having an egg sandwich with vegetables on an English muffin for breakfast.

I get eggs and Trader Joe's classic English muffins to make breakfast sandwiches.

Sheena Pradhan

When I have time to make breakfast, I opt for an egg sandwich with mushrooms and kale on a Trader Joe's classic English muffin for a low-sugar, moderate-carbohydrate meal.

Because I exercise a lot, I try to ensure I'm getting my macros β€” a balance of carbs, fats, and proteins my body needs.

This English muffin has 24 grams of carbohydrates per serving, and the two eggs have about 12 grams of protein.

Trader Joe's has the best one-ingredient peanut butter I've come across at any grocery store.

I've been buying Trader Joe's creamy unsalted peanut butter for years.

Sheena Pradhan

I've stuck with Trader Joe's peanut butter my whole adult life. I use it in homemade protein balls or simply have it with a banana or apple for a quick snack.

I love that this product has only one ingredient β€” dry-roasted peanuts.

Trader Joe's small-curd cottage cheese can be used for both savory and sweet breakfasts.

Trader Joe's small-curd cottage cheese is delicious in a high-protein breakfast.

Sheena Pradhan

Not to sound boring, but cottage cheese can be a great high-protein, low-carb breakfast. This particular cottage cheese has 12 grams of protein per serving.

If I want something simple for breakfast, I'll have cottage cheese and fruit. If I'm in the mood for something savory (but don't feel like bringing out a pan), I'll eat it with salsa.

The roasted seaweed snack with sea salt is satisfyingly crunchy.

I think Trader Joe's roasted seaweed snack with sea salt is a delicious potato-chip substitute.

Sheena Pradhan

For me, Trader Joe's seaweed snacks are a perfectly portioned low-carb potato-chip replacement.

They give me the same satisfaction as a handful of chips, and each package contains 3 grams of protein.

The chicken-sausage breakfast bowl is a great option when I'm pressed for time.

Sheena Pradhan

I love keeping microwavable breakfast bowls in my freezer for busy weeks when I don't want to deal with dishes.

This breakfast bowl has scrambled eggs, chicken sausage, and cheddar cheese β€” so each serving is mainly protein (32 grams) and fat (27 grams). However, it's important to remember that some fat is not necessarily a bad thing.

Trader Joe's chicken strips are so easy to add to salads.Β

Trader Joe's chicken strips are already cooked, so they're easy to incorporate into meals.

Sheena Pradhan

Trader Joe's chicken strips are high in protein, and the retailer carries various prepared options: grilled chili-lime, grilled balsamic-vinegar-and-rosemary, plain, and grilled lemon-pepper chicken.

I go through moods when I can eat the same thing for several days or weeks at a time, and these strips, paired with a bag of salad, are a great go-to option when I'm in this routine.Β

I pick up a few Trader Joe's salads for my weekly lunches.

When I need a quick lunch, I choose from a few Trader Joe's salads.

Sheena Pradhan

I like to pair Trader Joe's broccoli-and-kale slaw with chicken for a low-carb, low-sugar salad.Β I also like the classic Greek salad because it has fiber, protein from feta cheese, and little sugar.Β

Additionally, the lemon-basil pasta salad is pretty low in carbohydrates and sugar (considering it's made with pasta), with only 26 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of sugar per serving.Β

The Sunset Sprinkles teeny tiny tomatoes are cute and delicious.

I add the Sunset Sprinkles teeny tiny tomatoes to salads.

Sheena Pradhan

On my latest trip, I wanted fresh veggies and dip, so I opted for these teeny tiny tomatoes to pair with a dressing.

These look and taste like tiny heirloom tomatoes and are great in salads. Because they're so small, they don't even need to be sliced.

Trader Joe's carries a few low-sugar dressing options β€” this week, I went with the Green Goddess dressing.Β

I grabbed chevre with honey to include in a nutritious, satisfying snack.

Sheena Pradhan

I couldn't resist buying figs when I saw them, so I impulse-purchased this cheese to pair with them.

Though I was craving a sweet snack, my Trader Joe's also carries goat's-milk cheese without honey.

Sometimes, I mix things up with a stir-fry containing Trader Joe's squiggly knife-cut-style noodles.

I combined Trader Joe's squiggly knife-cut-style noodles and wild, raw Argentinian red shrimp for a quick meal.

Sheena Pradhan

Trader Joe's squiggly noodles take only four minutes to boil. They come with soy-and-sesame-sauce packets, though I also like to pair them with a high-protein peanut sauce or Trader Joe's crunchy chili-onion topping.

This week, I used the noodles in a stir fry. To make the dish, I sautΓ©ed a few vegetables and baked Trader Joe's wild, raw Argentinian red shrimp on a sheet pan for 25 minutes.

I tossed everything together in the same pot and had leftovers for the rest of the week.
