I tried six subs from QuikTrip and ranked them from worst to best.
Meredith Schneider
I ordered six grab-and-go subs at QuikTrip, a popular convenience store chain.
I thought the 3 Meat Stack sub was a little harder to bite than the others.
The turkey bacon club satisfied me the most, as both meats provided a smoky flavor.
I've been impressed with how convenience stores and gas stations have integrated better services and food options over the years.
QuikTrip, for example, is a Tulsa-based convenience chain with more than 1,000 stores across 17 states. Its grab-and-go food section has everything from pizza slices and taquitos to pastries and sandwiches.
I decided to visit a QuikTrip in Kansas City, Missouri, to see how its six grab-and-go subs stack up against each other. Here's how I'd rank them from worst to best.
Prices may vary by location.
The ham and cheddar sub was flavorful, but it wasn't memorable enough to beat its competition.
The ham and cheddar sub came with three thick-cut slices of Black Forest ham.
Meredith Schneider
QuikTrip's ham and cheddar sub came on wheat bread and had three slices of thick-cut Black Forest ham, lettuce, tomato, and cheddar cheese.
I thought the wheat bread was soft, chewy, and not too grainy, making it a great base for the sandwich.
Although the ham was a little stringy with fat and a bit dry, it was surprisingly flavorful. I paid $5 for a 6-inch sandwich.
The 3 Meat Stack sub was harder to bite into than the others.
The 3 Meat Stack sub was loaded with Black Forest ham, smoked turkey, roast beef, and cheese.
Meredith Schneider
QuikTrip's 3 Meat Stack sub was loaded with Black Forest ham, smoked turkey, and roast beef.It was also topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and a few slices of cheddar cheese.
I thought this sandwich was a little harder to bite into than the others because of the amount of meat and the thickness of the slices. It was also a bit messy, as some of the meat slid out as I ate it.
This 6-inch sub cost me $6.50.
The roast beef sub was packed with flavor.
I thought the wheat bread tasted a little stale.
Meredith Schneider
The roast beef sub came on wheat bread with three slices of meat, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
The bread itself seemed a little stale, as it was crustier on the outside but still fluffy in the middle. However, I really enjoyed the taste of the roast beef.
I recommend adding mustard to this sandwich to add even more flavor. I paid $6.50 for this 6-inch sub.
The Big Italian sub was the messiest of the bunch.
The Big Italian sub was stuffed with eight different ingredients.
Meredith Schneider
The Big Italian sub was filled with flavor, but it was the messiest sandwich of the bunch.
Complete with salami, pepperoni, Black Forest ham, mozzarella, tomato, banana peppers, black olives, and lettuce, I think this sandwich is ideal for those who like vinegar-based and pickled products like me. The bread was also topped with Romano and Parmesan cheese.
I enjoyed a 6-inch sub for $5.50.
I loved the turkey and Swiss sub's light, fresh-tasting ingredients.
The smoked turkey maintained its moisture nicely.
Meredith Schneider
With three slices of smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato, I found the turkey and Swiss sub to be a palate cleanser of light, fresh-tasting ingredients.
I thought the smoked turkey was fragrant and juicy, and it maintained its moisture better than the meat in other sandwiches.
A 6-inch sub costs $5.
My favorite sub was the turkey bacon club.
I wish the bacon had been a little more crispy.
Meredith Schneider
Of all the sandwiches I tried, the turkey bacon club was my favorite. In my opinion, the light flavor of the Swiss cheese allowed me to really appreciate the smokiness of both the turkey and the bacon.
The bacon on my sandwich wasn't crispy, which was disappointing, but it was so flavorful and juicy that it didn't matter.
Had QuikTrip taken it a step further and crisped the bacon โ or maybe tried its hand at maple bacon โ I think this would've been a perfect sandwich. I purchased a 6-inch sub for $6.
I tried frozen sausage breakfast sandwiches from the grocery store to find my favorite pick.
Joe Opaleski
I tried frozen breakfast sandwiches from Aldi, Jimmy Dean, Odom's Tennessee Pride, Swaggerty's Farm.
Swaggerty's took my top spot for its seasoning and fresh-tasting English muffin.
I thought the sandwiches from Jimmy Dean and Odom's Tennessee Pride were solid runner-ups.
Finding a breakfast option that's quick, tasty, and filling can be a struggle.
So, I tried a bunch of frozen breakfast sandwiches with sausage to see which (if any) could make my busy mornings easier in a delicious way.
I tried options from Aldi's Breakfast Best line, Jimmy Dean, Odom's Tennessee Pride, and Swaggerty's Farm.
I followed the microwave instructions for each sandwich to ensure they were all cooked in a similar way and ate them at breakfast time to get an actual feel for how they fueled my day.
Here's how I ranked them from my least favorite to my top pick.
Aldi's Breakfast Best biscuit sandwiches didn't impress me much.
The Breakfast Best sandwiches came in a box of four.
Joe Opaleski
I paid $4.59 for four sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwiches from Breakfast Best, an Aldi label.
At about $1.15 per sandwich, these were affordable. Unfortunately, they landed at the bottom of my list.
The sandwich didn't turn out great in the microwave.
I think the Breakfast Best sandwich might benefit from being cooked in an oven.
Joe Opaleski
After following the microwave instructions, the biscuit and parts of the cheese got hard, while some areas of the sausage patty stayed cold.
The sandwich also had some unpleasantly crunchy bits, likely from the cheese and biscuit.
Although it was filling and more affordable than some of the other sandwiches, I'd rather make eggs and sausage from scratch than eat this one again.
I also think this sandwich might benefit from a different cooking method because following the microwave instructions didn't work well for me.
Jimmy Dean Delights Egg'wiches don't use bread as buns.
Jimmy Dean Delights Egg'wich has egg patties instead of bread.
Joe Opaleski
The Jimmy Dean Delights Egg'wich sandwiches cost me $8 for a box of four, or about $2 a sandwich.
Instead of bread, the sandwich uses mini frittatas (seasoned with bacon, spinach, caramelized onion, and Parmesan) as the outer layers.
These sandwiches also contain turkey sausage and cheese.
This turned out nicely in the microwave.
The Jimmy Dean Delights Egg'wich was packed with flavor.
Joe Opaleski
The egg "buns" were nicely seasoned, which gave the sandwich an almost garlicky kick and great flavor. Plus, the egg patties meant it was filling without feeling overly heavy.
With ingredients like caramelized onion and Parmesan, this sandwich definitely tasted higher quality than the others I tried.
I also appreciated that the microwave worked well for this one. Without bread, there was no risk of it becoming soggy or dry, and the eggs cooked perfectly.
Odom's Tennessee Pride biscuit sandwiches took second place for me.
Odom's Tennessee Pride biscuit sandwiches are "snack size."
Joe Opaleski
I also picked up a 12-pack of mini sausage buttermilk-biscuit sandwiches from Odom's Tennessee Pride at Walmart for $6.32.
These mini sandwiches came in packs of two, so these cost about $1.05 per serving.
The sandwiches don't have cheese or egg, but they were surprisingly delicious.
I could've added cheese to these if I wanted.
Joe Opaleski
These sandwiches were the simplest of the ones I tried since they had no cheese or egg, but they still had plenty of flavor.
Two mini sandwiches were just the right amount to be satisfying.
Since they were smaller, they cooked faster than the full-sized options I tried, which I also appreciated.
These bite-sized sandwiches would be an especially great choice for families with kids who need a quick breakfast on the go.
Swaggerty's Farm has sausage, egg, and cheese muffins.
Swaggerty's Farm sausage, egg, and cheese muffin sandwiches came in a box of four.
Joe Opaleski
I paid $8 for four Swaggerty's Farm sausage, egg, and cheese muffins, making each $2.
These were tied for the priciest pick on the list, costing the same per sandwich as the ones from Jimmy Dean.
These were my favorite.
I would eat another breakfast sandwich from Swaggerty's Farm.
Joe Opaleski
The sausage was super flavorful with a nice kick of spice, and the English muffin reheated well โ it stayed soft and tasted freshly baked.
Although I found these took slightly longer to microwave than the package suggested, the extra cook time was worth it. The cheese was perfectly melted by the time I took the sandwich out of the microwave.
Plus, the Swaggerty's Farm sandwich felt the biggest and most substantial of all the ones I tried. It kept me full until lunch without any extra snacks in between.
I thought the grilled cheese from Five Guys was overpriced.
Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich was my favorite for overall value.
A grilled cheese sandwich is one of the ultimate comfort foods. It's a simple meal to make at home, but I was curious to see which fast-food restaurant made the best version of the classic sandwich.
So, I went to Sonic, Shake Shack, and Five Guys to see how their grilled cheese sandwiches stacked up against each other. Here's how it went.
Prices may vary by location.
The first restaurant I visited was Sonic.
Sonic has more than 3,500 locations across the US.
Shutterstock
Sonic was originally founded in 1953 as a root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma, called Top Hat. The chain's name was changed in 1959 and the rest is history. Sonic now has more than 3,500 locations across 46 states.
Sonic's grilled cheese was definitely priced to sell at just $3.25.
There certainly was plenty of cheese.
I was satisfied with Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich.
Steven John
Sonic's sandwich was the messiest of the bunch, with a decent amount of cheese oozing out the sides of the bread. However, the sandwich was full-sized, generously laden with cheese, and toasted well.
The bread was thick and spongy, and although the cheese definitely had a slightly artificial taste (as American cheese tends to, in my opinion), this was a satisfying sandwich that was 100% worth the money.
Next, I went to Shake Shack.
Shake Shack is known for its burgers, fries, and milkshakes, but it also serves grilled cheese.
Noam Galai/Getty Images
What once started as a Madison Square Park hot dog cart has grown into a chain with more than 580 locations worldwide. Although the chain is perhaps best known for its burgers and fries, it sells grilled cheese sandwiches, too.
Mine cost $6, which seemed a bit steep having just come from Sonic.
The sandwich tasted good, but was a bit small.
The grilled cheese from Shake Shack was on the smaller side.
Steven John
The sandwich tasted like a homemade grilled cheese, with a good balance of cheese and toasted bread.
However, it seemed to be much smaller than Sonic's offering, leaving me disappointed.
My last stop was Five Guys.
I ordered my last grilled cheese sandwich from Five Guys.
John Greim/Contributor/LightRocket via Getty Images
The famous burger chain was founded in 1986 and has expanded from a family business in Arlington, Virginia, to about 1,700 locations worldwide.
I paid $7 for my grilled cheese sandwich.
The sandwich was pricey but delicious.
I enjoyed the thick, buttery bread from Five Guys.
Steven John
The grilled cheese from Five Guys was the best tasting of the bunch. It was cooked fresh after I ordered, and was hot and melty when served.
The thick, buttery bread was delightful, and although the cheese was a bit overdone, it tasted great.
When I'm looking for a fast-food grilled cheese sandwich, price matters more than quality.
Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich offered the best overall value.
Steven John
The only problem I had with Five Guys' sandwich was the price tag. At $7, it cost more than double that of the grilled cheese from Sonic, and was neither twice as good nor twice as big.
So, next time I want a fast-food grilled cheese sandwich, I'm heading to Sonic because its tasty offering sells for a great price.
I tried all the Trader Joe's wraps and sandwiches I could find and ranked them from worst to best.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
I tried all the wraps and sandwiches I could find at Trader Joe's in the prepared foods section.
I thought the tuna salad wrap was slightly lacking in flavor.
The turkey apple cheddar sandwich would be perfect for an office lunch.
Trader Joe's is known for its varied and affordable prepared foods section.
From soups and salads to sandwiches, the grocery chain offers many choices for a quick lunch on the go.
To see which wraps and sandwiches are worth the money, I tried nine different kinds from my local Trader Joe's in Brooklyn, New York.
Some, like the chain's tarragon chicken wrap and turkey apple cheddar sandwich, would be perfect for a cheap office lunch or beach picnic. Others, like the tuna wrap, were decent, but I wouldn't reach for them again.
Here's every Trader Joe's wrap and sandwich, ranked from worst to best.
My least favorite sandwich was the tuna salad wrap.
Trader Joe's tuna salad wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
It came in a wheat tortilla with tuna salad and lettuce.
Trader Joe's tuna salad wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The tuna salad was moist and packed with chopped tomatoes, but it tasted flavorless, underseasoned, and bland overall.
The wrap could have benefited from other vegetables, like celery or red onion, to add more of a crunch.
Next up was the Italian-style wrap.
Trader Joe's Italian-style wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $4.99, excluding tax.
The wrap had uncured smoked ham, provolone cheese, genoa salami, and sopressata tucked into a wheat tortilla.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The wrap came with a creamy mustard spread, which I wasn't sure how to use. I ended up dipping the sandwich into the spread as I ate, which added a sharp spiciness to the sandwich.
The meat tasted fresh. However, other than the mustard sauce, it didn't pack much flavor.
I thought the creamy hummus and vegetable wrap was a good vegetarian option.
Trader Joe's creamy hummus and vegetable wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $4.99, excluding tax. I thought this was a little pricey for a meatless wrap that didn't come with a dipping sauce.
The wrap was fresh and flavorful but not very filling.
Trader Joe's creamy hummus and vegetable wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The wrap was simple, and the hummus was just as creamy as described.
The chopped carrots, cucumber, red bell pepper, and red cabbage gave it a Mediterranean flair and added flavor. Overall, however, I didn't feel completely satiated by this meatless option. I'd need a bit more than this wrap to fill me up at lunchtime.
The turkey club wrap was a tomato-flavored twist on a classic sandwich.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
The wrap was stuffed with turkey breast, spinach, turkey bacon, and tomato mayonnaise.
Trader Joe's turkey club wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The turkey breast was moist and flavorful, and the turkey bacon added a slight smokiness. The spinach added a touch of freshness, and the tomato-flavored wrap added even more flavor to this take on a club sandwich.
However, I thought the wrap could have used a touch more mayonnaise, and the tomato flavor in the sauce didn't come through as much as I expected it to.
I also tried the turkey breast, spinach, and Swiss cheese wrap.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
The wrap was made with an herb and garlic tortilla.
Trader Joe's turkey breast, spinach, and Swiss cheese wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The fresh flavor of the spinach and pungent Swiss cheese really came through, as did the honey Dijon mustard sauce. I thought the tortilla was also really flavorful.
However, other wraps from Trader Joe's delivered a more dynamic flavor profile. This wrap was undeniably tasty but just a little boring.
The grilled pesto chicken wrap landed in the middle of the pack.
Trader Joe's grilled pesto chicken wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
The wrap was made with pesto-seasoned grilled chicken, ricotta, feta cheese, zucchini, and sundried tomatoes.
Trader Joe's grilled pesto chicken wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
This wrap was really moist and flavorful, and the nuttiness of the pesto, which came on the side, added a vibrant flavor that really impressed me.
The two different types of cheese also added a lot of moisture and flavor to the wrap. I liked the addition of the pesto sauce, which I drizzled over the top of the wrap as I was eating.
I'd definitely buy this again for an easy lunch on the go.
My third favorite sandwich was the Buffalo-style chicken wrap.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
This was the only Trader Joe's wrap I had tried before, so I already knew I liked it.
Trader Joe's Buffalo-style chicken wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The wrap features chicken meat tossed in spicy Buffalo sauce, complete with diced celery in a tomato-flavored flour tortilla. It also includes a packet of blue cheese dressing.
I thought this wrap was super flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. I dipped the sandwich in the blue cheese dressing provided, which added a more savory flavor.
The wrap was moist without being soggy, and overall, it impressed me.
My second favorite was the only true sandwich in the lineup: Trader Joe's turkey apple cheddar sandwich.
Trader Joe's turkey apple cheddar sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $4.99, excluding tax.
The sandwich is made with thick slices of turkey breast, sliced apples, cheddar cheese, arugula, and Dijon mayonnaise.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
Unlike the wraps, this sandwich came served on a multigrain rustico roll.
I loved every part of this sandwich and thought it would make the perfect lunch for the office or a refreshing beachside snack in the summer.
The apple slices added a tart contrast to the savory turkey and Dijon mayonnaise, while the nutty, grainy bread tied all the flavors together.
It was also heartier and more filling than many of the wraps despite being less expensive in most cases. I thought that made this sandwich the best value by far.
The best wrap from Trader Joe's was the tarragon chicken salad wrap.
Trader Joe's tarragon chicken salad wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.49, excluding tax.
The wrap was stuffed to the brim with thick chunks of chicken and romaine lettuce.
Trader Joe's tarragon chicken salad wrap.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
This wrap reminded me slightly of a chicken Caesar wrap but had even more flavor. The tarragon's fragrant flavor balanced out the fresh notes of the lettuce and mayonnaise, while the almonds added the ideal amount of nuttiness and crunchy texture.
It had a great depth of flavor and kept me full all day. However, it was also one of the highest-calorie wraps I tried, so keep that in mind if you're trying to cut back on your intake.
That said, based on flavor and size, I thought this wrap was great value for the money, and I'd definitely buy it again.
I tried BLT sandwiches from Subway, Jimmy John's, and Cousins Subs.
Michelle Mastro
I tried BLT sandwiches from Cousins Subs, Jimmy John's, and Subway.
I wasn't a fan of Subway's BLT and thought the bread tasted a bit sugary.
I loved Jimmy John's applewood smoked bacon, but Cousins Subs made my overall favorite BLT.
BLT sandwiches are my go-to lunch staple. Filled with crispy bacon, fresh lettuce, juicy tomato, and a touch of mayo, they're simple but delicious.
Although BLTs are easy to prepare at home, I was curious to see which major sandwich chain makes the best one. So, I headed to Indiana-based Subway, Jimmy John's, and Cousins Subs locations to compare their offerings.
Here's how it went.
Prices may vary by location.
I started my quest for the best BLT at Cousins Subs.
The first BLT I tried was from Cousins Subs.
Michelle Mastro
Cousins Subs began serving sandwiches in 1972. As its name suggests, the brand was started by two cousins who wanted to bring their favorite handhelds from the East Coast to Milwaukee.
Although the vast majority of the brand's 100+ locations are located in Wisconsin, I was able to visit one of the chain's Indianapolis storefronts.
My 7.5-inch sub cost $9.
I thought Cousins Subs had the best bread.
The bread at Cousins Subs was my favorite.
Michelle Mastro
The bread on this sandwich tasted fresh and reminded me of the kind I'd get at Pret a Manger in London; it wasn't chewy at all and went down easily.
The bacon was long and crispy, filling the sandwich and complementing the bread's fluffiness. The tomato slices were also a good size, and the lettuce was neatly chopped.
The mayo seemed to have a slight seasoning that gave it a great flavor, too.
This sandwich had the best overall flavor of the three, so even though the brand is harder to find in my area, it was worth the trip. If I lived closer to a Cousins Subs, I'd 100% order this BLT again.
Next, I visited Jimmy John's.
Jimmy John's has opened more than 2,600 locations since it was founded in 1983.
Michelle Mastro
Unlike the more localized Cousins Subs, Jimmy John's has more than 2,600 locations across the US. However, it has roots in the Midwest โ its first store opened in Illinois in 1983.
I visited a restaurant in Carmel, Indiana, and paid $8 for a 8-inch sandwich.
Jimmy John's BLT had the best bacon.
I really enjoyed Jimmy John's applewood smoked bacon.
Michelle Mastro
The bacon on this sandwich was very savory, and I could taste the applewood smoke, which added a zestiness to the fluffy French bread.
It had a lot of lettuce โ much more than the version from Cousins Subs โ which I liked because it felt like I was making up for all the carbs I was eating. The tomatoes were also cut thicker.
Together, this made the sandwich feel like a salad between bread slices, but there was still a lot of bacon to render this handheld a true BLT.
I concluded my BLT journey at Subway.
I ordered my last BLT from Subway.
Michelle Mastro
Subway has nearly 37,000 locations across more than 100 countries. Even though it's not my go-to fast-food spot, I know that when I travel, I can find a location almost anywhere I go. This time, I visited a location in Carmel, Indiana.
I originally ordered a 6-inch sub, but the cashier upgraded me to a foot-long version since the store was running a deal when I visited. I ended up paying $7.90 and cut the sandwich in half to enjoy.
Subway's BLT was my least favorite.
I did not enjoy my BLT from Subway.
Michelle Mastro
When I took a bite, I thought the bread tasted sugary and chewy, which made me wish I'd gotten a wrap or whole wheat bread instead.
The bacon wasn't much better, either, as I thought it was greasy and a bit flimsy.
Although the veggie portions didn't necessarily taste fresh, I wish I'd asked for more to maybe make up for some of the grease.
I won't be returning to Subway anytime soon, but I enjoyed the BLTs from Cousins Subs and Jimmy John's.
I enjoyed the BLTs at Cousins Subs and Jimmy John's.
Michelle Mastro
Overall, I thought Cousins Subs and Jimmy John's made the best BLTs. If I had to choose one winner, I'd rank Cousins Subs slightly higher because of the bread and seasonings, even though I preferred Jimmy John's bacon.
However, I thought the BLT from Subway was a bit chewy and seemed like itlacked fresh-tasting vegetables. I also wasn't a fan of the bacon, and likely won't be returning to the chain anytime soon.

I compared chicken sandwiches from three casual dining chains: Applebee's, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Chili's.
Buffalo Wild Wings and Chili's offered a Southern-inspired sandwich with pickles and mayonnaise, while Applebee's had a more classically American chicken sandwich topped with bacon and ranch.
Chains across the industry are leaning into chicken in an effort to capitalize on Gen Z's tastebuds.
"Fried chicken is one of the fastest-growing segments โ especially with a younger consumer that prefers boneless fried chicken," Chili's chief marketing officer George Felix told Business Insider in January.
Taco Bell's chief marketing officer, Taylor Montgomery, said it best in a recent interview with BI: "Crispy chicken's hot."
All three sandwiches I tried were tasty, but only one chain delivered the best chicken sandwich in terms of taste and value. Here they are, ranked from worst to best.
My least favorite chicken sandwich came from Applebee's, but it wasn't bad by any means.
The chicken sandwich from Applebee's was available as part of the chain's lunchtime meal deal.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
At the Brooklyn, New York, location I visited, the bacon ranch chicken sandwich typically costs $16.99, excluding tax.
You can also order the sandwich as part of a lunchtime deal during the week. It costs $12.99 and includes a drink.
The chicken sandwich came topped with pickles, lettuce, two strips of bacon, and ranch dressing.
The chicken sandwich came topped with two strips of crispy bacon.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The bun was left plain, though a generous serving of ranch dressing was placed on top of the crispy chicken breast.
The chicken sandwich was juicy and pretty flavorful, but I didn't love the texture of the chicken breast.
I wished the breading on the chicken was crispier.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The chicken's breading didn't have the crispiness I usually expect in a chicken sandwich, but the pickles and ranch dressing helped add moisture and flavor.
The chicken breast was thick and juicy, though it was the smallest of the sandwiches I tried. The bacon strips were also a bit overcooked for my taste. While some prefer extra-crispy bacon, I personally enjoy a slight chewiness.
The classic chicken sandwich from Buffalo Wild Wings landed in the middle of the pack.
Buffalo Wild Wing's classic chicken sandwich came with fries.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The classic chicken sandwich cost $12.49, excluding tax, at the location I visited in Brooklyn, New York. I thought this was an excellent value.
The sandwich came with mayonnaise and pickles.
The sandwich was fried to a perfect crisp.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The chicken breast was well-fried and bigger than the bun โ a promising sign for a chicken sandwich.
While the chicken breast was juicy, I wish there had been more mayonnaise on the sandwich.
The chicken sandwich was juicy and I liked the bun.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The fried chicken's breading was peppery and the pickles added a nice touch of brine to the flavor profile.
The bun held everything together, though I found that as I was eating, the breading started to become a touch soggy due to the moisture of the chicken breast.
However, for the price, I thought this was a great deal. I'd definitely order it again.
My favorite chicken sandwich came from Chili's.
The chicken sandwich came with seasoned fries.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The crispy chicken sandwich typically costs $14.49 at my local Chili's in Brooklyn, New York.
However, you can also order the chicken sandwich as part of the chain's 3-For-Me value meal. The meal deal starts at $10.99 and includes the choice of a beverage, a starter, and a variety of entrรฉes.
The crispy chicken sandwich came topped with a generous spread of mayonnaise and pickles on a brioche bun.
There was a hearty serving of mayonnaise on the sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The chicken breast was fried to crunchy perfection, with crispy bits spilling out of the sandwich. I could hardly wait to take a bite.
The chicken sandwich's breading was the most flavorful out of the sandwiches I tried, and I liked the hearty amount of mayonnaise on it.
The chicken sandwich was crunchy and flavorful.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
As I took a bite, a burst of salty, briny flavor hit my taste buds thanks to the pickles and flavor of the chicken breast.
The chicken sandwich had the perfect balance of crunch and crispiness while remaining moist, thanks to the juicy chicken breast that wasn't too thick, and the generous spread of mayonnaise on both buns, which added even more flavor.
I tried and ranked five fish sandwiches from McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and Popeyes.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
I tried and ranked five fish sandwiches from McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and Popeyes.
I was impressed by McDonald's classic Filet-O-Fish and tartar sauce.
However, Popeyes had my favorite sandwich.
Fish sandwiches are popular spring offerings at many fast-food chains, but which chain has the best one?
Every year, fast-food chains release fish sandwiches to coincide with Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday. During that time, Catholics abstain from eating meat but can eat fish on Fridays. This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, March 5.
McDonald's has been selling fish sandwiches since the 1960s. The chain's Filet-O-Fish was born after a franchisee in a highly Catholic area of Ohio noticed his restaurant's sales suffered on Fridays.
The franchisee brought the idea of selling a fish sandwich to McDonald's then-CEO Ray Kroc, who was appalled at the idea of adding a fish sandwich to his hamburger empire's lineup.
"I don't care if the Pope himself comes to Cincinnati. He can eat hamburgers like everybody else. We are not going to stink up our restaurants with any of your damned old fish," Kroc recalled in his 1977 memoir, "Grinding It Out: The Making of McDonald's."
However, customers couldn't get enough, and by 1965, the Filet-O-Fish became a permanent fixture on McDonald's menus nationwide.
Since the Filet-O-Fish was introduced, nearly every fast-food chain has added a seasonal fish sandwich to their menus during the Lent season.
Popeyes introduced its first flounder fish sandwich in 2021 and added a spicy fish sandwich to its menu the following year, perhaps aiming to capitalize on the incredible success of its spicy chicken sandwich in 2019.
But which sandwich is the tastiest and offers the best value?
For a definitive ranking, I tried all the fish sandwiches I could from McDonald's, Burger King, Popeyes, and Wendy's.
Here's every fast-food fish sandwich ranked from worst to best.
My least favorite fish sandwich was the crispy panko fish sandwich from Wendy's.
Wendy's crispy panko fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The sandwich cost $9.36 from my local Wendy's in Brooklyn, New York, excluding tax and fees.
It was supposed to come topped with lettuce, a slice of American cheese, pickles, and tartar sauce. Strangely, my sandwich came with tomato instead of lettuce.
Wendy's crispy panko fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
This was obviously just an error made by the employees at my specific Wendy's. However, I decided to go ahead and try it anyway.
I enjoyed the crispy fish patty, and the tartar sauce had a subtle flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
I couldn't quite get past the tomato, though. It added a strange flavor to an overall OK sandwich. After removing the tomato, I liked the sandwich a bit more.
If you order this yourself, you'll probably have a better experience than I did, with the correct toppings.
My fourth favorite sandwich was the Big Fish sandwich from Burger King.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $7.39 from my local Burger King in Brooklyn, New York, excluding tax and fees.
The Alaskan pollock patty came topped with tartar sauce, lettuce, and crunchy pickles on a toasted potato bun.
Burger King Big Fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
I thought the sandwich could have used a touch more tartar sauce, and the lettuce could have been spread out more to ensure an evenly distributed bite of all the ingredients.
The pickles were very crispy and I loved the texture of the potato bun.
Burger King Big Fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
However, I thought the fish patty could have been just a touch flakier on the inside. The texture was more chewy than some of the other sandwiches I tried.
My third favorite was the classic flounder fish sandwich from Popeyes.
Popeyes classic flounder fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.99 from my local Popeyes in Brooklyn, New York, excluding tax and fees.
The top of the sandwich had a smattering of tartar sauce, and underneath the flounder patty were layers of pickles and more tartar sauce.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It came on a brioche bun, just like Popeyes' other sandwiches.
I really liked how crispy the fried fish patty was, and it had a lot of savory flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The tartar sauce was tart without being too overpowering. The pickles were thickly cut, which impressed me. Overall, I really enjoyed this sandwich and would definitely order it again.
My second favorite was the McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.99 at my local McDonald's in Brooklyn, New York, excluding tax and fees.
The sandwich came with a very generous serving of tartar sauce and a half-slice of American cheese.
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The cheese slice was slightly hanging off the burger, so I moved it more to the center before diving in.
In 2023, a TikTok user claimed the size of the Filet-O-Fish patty appeared to have shrunken over the years, citing "shrinkflation," a tactic reportedly used by chains in which they reduce the size of their menu items in response to rising costs.
However, McDonald's responded that the "size and build of the Filet-O-Fish, including a half slice of American cheese, has not changed in decades." I didn't notice anything surprising about the size โ I thought it seemed average for a burger.
This sandwich had the flakiest fish patty, in my opinion.
McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
The layers of fish flaked off with each bite, which I didn't find with any other sandwich.
I also loved the amount of tartar sauce included on this sandwich โ it added a lot of flavor and moisture, without being overpowering. I didn't really taste the cheese, and think the sandwich would have been just as good or better without that addition.
My favorite fish sandwich was the spicy flounder fish sandwich from Popeyes.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider
It cost $5.99 from my local Popeyes in Brooklyn, New York, excluding tax and fees.
Instead of tartar sauce, the sandwich came topped with spicy spread and pickles.

I was interested to see if I would miss the tartar sauce, since I liked it on the classic Popeyes fish sandwich.
I loved the spicy flavor of the mayo with the fish and crunchy pickles.
Popeyes spicy flounder fish sandwich.
Erin McDowell/Business Insider
I thought this sandwich was the most flavorful, and also a great value at $5.99. I loved how the spicy mayo added not only a delicious amount of flavor but also added moisture to the fish patty.
The crinkle-cut pickles tasted fresh, and I didn't feel weighed down by the ingredients. I would definitely order this sandwich again.

Bakery items here looked delicious as well! Definitely stop by to avoid a fast food joint!" wrote Yelp user Jack S.
I'll admit that I've been let down by the restaurant more than once, but nonetheless, I count myself among its fans. Because Subway has over 30,000 locations globally, it's still nice to know I can probably grab something familiar at one, no matter where in the world I am.
I ordered a 12-inch roast-beef sub for $16.28, which breaks down to about $1.36 an inch.
The produce at Subway tasted surprisingly fresh.
The freshness won me over at Subway.
Steven John
Subway employees can sometimes go a little heavy on the sauce, but the few stripes of mayo I got were well-portioned.
The bread and cheese were nothing special, but the roast beef was actually pretty tasty โ I just wish there was more of it.
The produce truly stood out here. The tomatoes were thickly cut and actually had good flavor, and the lettuce tasted fresh and crisp.
I'd argue that roast beef should be the star of a roast-beef sandwich, but I'm certainly not mad at the Subway sub.
Jimmy John's Big John sandwich was next on my list.
I had to pay extra for cheese at Jimmy John's.
Steven John
Jimmy John's is a Midwest staple that's spread to over 2,000 locations across the US. It's perhaps most famous for its fresh-baked bread.
I ordered a regular (8-inch) Big John but paid $1 extra to add provolone cheese. The total came to $11.41, or about $1.43 an inch.
The bread makes the meal at Jimmy John's.
I love Jimmy John's bread.
Steven John
Sadly, I thought my roast-beef sandwich from Jimmy John's tasted rather bland overall.
It needed a bit more meat, the meat needed a bit more salt, the cheese was all but undetectable, and the veggies faded into the background.
You'd think that would mean I didn't enjoy this sandwich, but that wasn't the case because of one thing: the bread.
Jimmy John's French bread is good enough to be enjoyed on its own with just some butter or perhaps a spread of Dijon mustard. It readily elevates what would've been an underwhelming sandwich into a perfectly decent meal.
Jersey Mike's served up freshly sliced meat.
I had high hopes for Jersey Mike's.
Steven John
New Jersey-based chain Jersey Mikes has over 2,000 locations throughout the US and Canada.
It's famous for building sandwiches with freshly sliced cold cuts, and it was the only chain where I watched an employee slice my roast beef seconds after I placed my order.
My No. 6 (roast beef and provolone) 7-inch sub cost me $12.36, or about $1.77 an inch.
My Jersey Mike's sandwich reminded me of one from a mom-and-pop deli.
The meat was piled high at Jersey Mike's.
Steven John
The roast beef piled onto my Jersey Mike's sandwich was well over an inch thick. I pulled a few pieces of meat out to try on its own and found that it tasted high quality, too
The provolone cheese also had good flavor, but I didn't think there was enough lettuce, and the tomatoes tasted a bit bland.
However, the biggest issue I had with the sandwich was the rather sloppy, messy assembly. It was difficult to hold together as a cohesive unit, and the mayo was slapped on too heavily and unevenly.
I haven't ordered this enough to know if it was a one-off problem or a consistent problem with the chain's sandwich assembly.
There were pros and cons to each sandwich โ I wish I could combine them.
It was hard to pick the best roast-beef sandwich.
Steven John
The generous portion of roast beef and the quality of the meat at Jersey Mike's easily would've made it my favorite sandwich had it been assembled with more care.
However, as it is, there were things I liked and disliked about each sub. Jimmy John's sandwich tasted pretty bland despite its amazing bread, and Subway's felt underfilled but had lovely tomatoes and lettuce.
It would be divine if I could combine the meat from Jersey Mike's and the produce from Subway on the bread from Jimmy John's.

I ordered the same sandwich from two chains and compared them based on taste and value.
I ordered a turkey sandwich with the same toppings from Subway and Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
The Subway sandwich was larger and had more sauce, but I liked Potbelly's bread more.
Nothing hits the spot quite like a classic turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and all the fixings.ย
However, not all turkey sandwiches are created equal. To determine which chain has the best turkey sandwich, I decided to test them from two popular brands: Subway and Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
Founded in 1965, Subway long held the title of the largest fast-food chain in the world, although it's now second to McDonald's, Food & Wine reported. Still, there are more than 20,000 Subway locations in the US compared to Potbelly's more than 400 locations.
I tried both chains' classic turkey sandwiches on their own and also determined what it would cost to get each sandwich with a drink and a bag of chips to round out the meal.
Here's how the same turkey sandwich from Subway and Potbelly Sandwich Shop measured up.
From Subway, I ordered a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mustard, mayo, and oil, as well as a bottled soda and a bag of chips to complete the meal.
My meal from Subway.
Erin McDowell/Insider
The foot-long sandwich came to $11.89. When combined with the other items, my total meal came to $17.17, not including taxes and fees.ย
I decided to compare the sandwiches alone since I couldn't order the same drink or chips from both chains.
I ordered my sandwich on multigrain bread.

Erin McDowell/Insider
I thought the sandwich was a good size for the price.
It looked promising โ I could see the mustard and mayonnaise spilling from the side of the sandwich.

The 6-inch sub would have been more than enough to satisfy me for lunch, but I was happy the sandwich was large enough to split with a friend or for me to save the other half for later.
Inside the sandwich, the layers of meat, cheese, and toppings were laid out methodically.

Erin McDowell/Insider
It definitely looked like a lot of care went into crafting the sandwich to ensure that each bite contained all of the ingredients.
Overall, I was impressed by the turkey sandwich from Subway and liked the ratio of all the ingredients.
The turkey sandwich from Subway.
Erin McDowell/Insider
As I predicted, I could taste every part of the sandwich in each bite. The ingredients, especially the lettuce, tasted fresh, though I thought the tomato slices could have been a little thicker.
There was a lot of sauce slathered on the sandwich, which I liked, and the mustard added a lot of flavor.ย
However, I thought the bread felt on the lighter side and didn't have a lot of flavor to it.
I ordered the same sandwich from Potbelly Sandwich Shop, plus chips and a drink.
My meal from Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
Erin McDowell/Insider
The sandwich came to $13.69, making it a little more expensive than the sandwich from Subway.
I also added chips and a drink, so the entire meal cost $21.57, putting it at $4 more than Subway's.
Despite being the same price, the turkey sandwich from Potbelly was smaller than the one from Subway.
The turkey sandwiches from Subway (left) and Potbelly Sandwich Shop (right).
Erin McDowell/Insider
The two sandwiches couldn't have looked more different. Whereas the Subway sandwich (pictured left) came on flat-looking multigrain bread, the bread Potbelly used was crusty and appeared to be of a higher quality.
I couldn't see sauce spilling from the sides of the Potbelly sandwich, but I could see large slices of onion and tomato.
The sandwich from Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
Erin McDowell/Insider
I was excited to see how the actual taste of the sandwiches would compare.
The inside of the Potbelly sandwich definitely looked a lot less organized than the one from Subway.
The sandwich from Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
Erin McDowell/Insider
The ingredients were laid out less methodically, and I worried that each bite wouldn't include all the ingredients at once, which is what I prefer.
Though the sandwich was smaller, I thought the Potbelly turkey sandwich was slightly more dense and each bite more filling due to the thick, crusty bread.
The sandwich from Potbelly Sandwich Shop.
Erin McDowell/Insider
There was also a generous serving of lettuce, onions, and tomato that really helped make the sandwich stand out. However, I thought it was a little light on the sauce โ I couldn't really taste the mayonnaise or mustard.
Overall, I was impressed by both turkey sandwiches. However, if I was only going to order one again, I would probably stick with Subway.

The sandwich delivered on price, size, and flavor โ and I loved how they weren't afraid to hold back on the sauces.ย
I wanted to see which popular sandwich chain made the best club sub.
Steven John
I tried classic club sandwiches from Subway, Jimmy John's, and Jersey Mike's to find the best one.
Jimmy John's and Jersey Mike's impressed me with their bread and meat, respectively.
The Subway sandwich was a bit of a letdown for me, largely because I felt it wasn't big enough.
I love sandwiches, and if I had to pick just one to eat for the rest of my life, I'd choose the club.
In my book, a club sandwich consists of bread, mayo, turkey, lettuce, tomato, and sometimes bacon. It can also be made with other meats, however, such as ham or chicken.
I set out to try classic subs from Subway, Jersey Mike's, and Jimmy John's to see which popular chain serves the best.
Here's how they stacked up.
I started my club-sandwich journey at Jersey Mike's.
Jersey Mike's is known for its sub sandwiches.
Steven John
Jersey Mike's started serving sandwiches in the 1950s, and as its name suggests, the original location was in New Jersey. Now, however, it has more than 2,000 shops across the US and Canada.
The Jersey Mike's club sub consists of turkey, ham, provolone, applewood-smoked bacon, and mayo. I added lettuce and tomato since they were also included in the photo on the website.
My 7-inch sub cost me $11.57.
Jersey Mike's piled on the meat.
I got a lot of bang for my buck at Jersey Mike's.
Steven John
The turkey and ham were stacked high on the club sub โ the pile was easily an inch thick, and that didn't even include the bacon strips. The meat was shaved thin and tasted fresh.
The tomato slices were a good size, and the mayo wasn't slathered on too heavily.
Unfortunately, the wheat bread didn't seem particularly fresh or soft to me. I also wasn't thrilled with how readily the finely chopped lettuce fell out of the sandwich.
Despite those minor flaws, I'd 100% order the Jersey Mike's club again.
Next on my list was Jimmy John's.
Jimmy John's started in Illinois.
Steven John
Like Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's has more than 2,000 locations, but its roots are in the Midwest. The first shop opened in Illinois in the 1980s.
The Jimmy John's country club features turkey, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. My 8-inch sandwich cost $11.97.
I thought the Jimmy John's club had the best bread.
None of the other shops came close to beating the bread at Jimmy John's.
Steven John
The Jimmy John's French bread, which is the default unless you change it, is sublime. Maybe it was made shortly before I placed my order, but it seemed unusually fresh for a fast-food joint.
I could've enjoyed it with a pat of butter instead of toppings, but I was glad for all the other ingredients.
Though it didn't have bacon, the meat and cheese were cut thicker than Jersey Mike's, and the cheese was more flavorful.
I also appreciated the fresh veggies. The lettuce was chopped but not too finely minced, so it didn't slide off the sandwich as easily.
My country club had a bit too much mayo, so if I ordered it again, I'd definitely specify the amount. Aside from that, the sandwich was pretty much perfect.
I ended my sandwich quest at Subway.
Subway has locations all around the world.
Steven John
Unlike the other two chains, which operate out of only the US and Canada, Subway is a global sandwich behemoth with tens of thousands of locations.
I'm an unabashed fan and take comfort in knowing that wherever I travel, there's probably some familiar food nearby.
That said, I don't usually order its oven-roasted turkey and ham sandwich, which is the closest thing it has to a club. You pick your own toppings at Subway, so I added mayo, provolone cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
Subway's standard sub was the smallest of the three at 6 inches, but it was also cheaper. I paid $8.68.
For me, Subway's take on the classic sub was a mild disappointment.
Subway's sandwich was a bit small, in my opinion.
Steven John
I wish I'd added a lot more toppings because this was the most diminutive sandwich of the trio by far.
There wasn't much meat, just two pieces of cheese, and the veggie portions were modest. In my opinion, the meat was also a bit less flavorful than the others.
Adding bacon would've helped, but it wasn't on the basic sandwich, and it would've cost extra. I think I'd rather stick with one of my usual Subway orders anyway.
All three chains had their own take on a club, but some were better than others.
I'd order the club sandwiches from Jersey Mike's and Jimmy John's again.
Steven John
Though none of the sandwiches ticked all of my boxes, the ones from Jimmy John's and Jersey Mike's came pretty close.
Both chains offered substantial subs loaded with meats, which were particularly flavorful at Jersey Mike's. Plus, Jimmy John's had the best bread.
The club I made at Subway, by comparison, fell flat. It was smaller, had fewer toppings, and didn't pack much flavor, so I probably wouldn't order it again. I'll still return to the chain for other subs, however.

Jersey Mike's has about 3,000 US locations that generated more than $3 billion of revenue in 2023, making it the second-largest sub-style sandwich chain after Subway. It's also known for its ad spots featuring actor Danny DeVito.
The company's story dates back to 1971 when Cancro, then a 14-year-old student, began working at a Jersey Shore sandwich shop called Mike's Subs. At age 17, he learned the owner wanted to sell so he bought the business with the help of a $125,000 loan from his football coach.

Cancro changed the company's name to Jersey Mike's when he began franchising in 1987. He later rolled out a program to help store managers become franchise owners, which he named after his old coach.
Blackstone's deal values the sandwich chain at about $8 billion including debt, and includes an earnout agreement whereby the full price is only paid after Jersey Mike's expands to 4,000 stores, an unnamed source told Reuters.
