I ordered the cheapest steak meal at Outback, Texas Roadhouse, and LongHorn Steakhouse — there was one clear winner

1 May 2025 at 09:08
Steak, mashed potatoes, rolls, and broccoli at Texas Roadhouse
I went to the chains Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steakhouse, and LongHorn Steakhouse to see which had the best cheap steak meal.

Steven John

  • I ordered 6-ounce sirloin steaks at 3 steakhouse chains to see if the meals would be a good value.
  • LongHorn Steakhouse and Texas Roadhouse served me solid meals that felt like a decent price.
  • Outback Steakhouse blew me away by serving me a great meal for under $25, even after tax and tip.

If it seems restaurant prices have increased in recent years, it's because they have.

Average menu prices in the United States rose 27.2% between February 2020 and the summer of 2024, according to data from the National Restaurant Association.

Even so, I wondered if I could still find great restaurant meals at a decent price. In this case, I set my sights on a steak.

I ordered the same meal at three of America's favorite steakhouse chains: Outback Steakhouse, LongHorn Steakhouse, and Texas Roadhouse. I visited locations near me in Long Island, New York, during early lunch hours on a weekday.

At each restaurant, I asked for a 6-ounce sirloin steak (the cheapest steak each chain offers) cooked medium-well, sides of mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli, and whatever house bread came free with the meal.

Here's how my dining experiences went.

LongHorn Steakhouse's meal left me slightly underwhelmed.

My filet at LongHorn Steakhouse didn't look super appealing to me at first.

Steven John

I ordered the 6-ounce sirloin โ€” the Renegade Sirloin โ€” at LongHorn Steakhouse and, as I would at all three locations, I asked for mashed potatoes and broccoli as the included sides.

My complimentary bread was a single medium-sized loaf of honey wheat that seemed a bit dry. I wondered if I may have just gotten a stale loaf.

The butter served beside it was fresh-from-the-fridge cold, which was not ideal for spreading onto bread.

As for the sides, my broccoli felt very overcooked and too mushy for my liking.

The mashed potatoes were quite good. They were creamy with enough melted butter atop to suffuse flavor but not to overwhelm the texture or taste of the side.

My steak had tasty seasoning, but it wasn't perfect.

My sirloin from LongHorn Steakhouse had a good flavor.

Steven John

At first, I was a bit put off by the irregular kidney-bean shape of the steak.

Upon slicing into the sirloin, it seemed to me like it had been cooked a bit beyond medium-well. However, I appreciated that the cut had minimal fat and gristle.

The texture was a bit tough โ€” I attribute that to the cooking, not the quality of the meat โ€” but LongHorn's simple seasoning was tasty with notes of pepper.

My sirloin meal cost $18, and my check came to just over $23 after tax and a 20% tip. That price felt fair to me.

All in all, I was neither impressed nor unimpressed with my meal.

I'd go back to Texas Roadhouse any day, but primarily for the bread.

The Texas Roadhouse rolls tasted fresh.

Steven John

Ah, starting with the complimentary bread โ€” those of you who frequent Texas Roadhouse are nodding, right?

Per the chain's site, its famous rolls are "baked fresh every five minutes and served with honey cinnamon butter."

Truth be told, I think the butter tastes too sweet, but who cares? The bread is so fresh, warm, and flavorful that it alone makes the visit to the restaurant worth it.

I find the rolls are best enjoyed as they are โ€” they don't need butter of any kind to be incredible.

In terms of sides, my mashed potatoes seemed a tad overmixed, leading to a glut of starch release and that gummy texture most people, myself included, don't love.

The broccoli wasn't as soft as what I had at LongHorn, but it was still too overcooked for my personal preference.

The steak wasn't bad, and I was wowed by its price.

My sirloin at Texas Roadhouse wasn't the most tender steak I tried, but it still felt like a great value.

Steven John

The 6-ounce sirloin steak I got at Texas Roadhouse appeared to be cooked properly to medium-well based on its color, yet it was still a bit tough to cut through and chew.

The mildly salty and peppery flavor profile of the meat was excellent, though. That said, I was perhaps most impressed by the price of my steak.

I was impressed that my lunch special 6-ounce sirloin was just $14, and my bill came out to just $19.20 after a 20% tip and taxes.

This felt like an outright steal, given the meal came with two sides and rolls. (I'd have welcomed a special lunch price at the other chains, but none was available.)

Even at the full dinner price, the steak meal costs just $16, still making it the most affordable sirloin steak of the bunch. These exceptional prices alone would probably be enough to entice me to return to Texas Roadhouse.

Outback Steakhouse surprised me by serving the best of both sides.

I found myself enjoying the mashed potatoes at Outback Steakhouse.

Steven John

That classic brown loaf of Outback Steakhouse honey-wheat bread was soft and had a mild flavor, but it had nothing on Texas Roadhouse rolls. The latter's offering feels more memorable and fresh.

That said, Outback's creamy butter was more to my taste

When my 6-ounce Outback Center-Cut Sirloin meal arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the nice shape and appearance of the steak, the fresh herbs scattered across it, the scoop of mashed potatoes, and the generous portion of broccoli.

At Outback, I finally received broccoli that I can say felt just barely overcooked. And for the record, I like my steamed broccoli to have a hint of crunch left, so for many folks, this side would've been perfect.

The mashed potatoes at Outback were close to perfect. Their texture was thick and rich with occasional lumps and bits of potato skin mixed throughout.

The potatoes were much like what I prepare at home, and that's high praise.

The chain served me my favorite steak, too.

My steak at Outback seemed to be cooked just how I wanted.

Steven John

Slicing into the steak revealed the most tender cut of meat of all three restaurants.

Here, I found a steak that looked like it had been cooked perfectly to medium-well with almost no hint of gristle through and through.

It was tender, well-seasoned, and very much worth its $18 price โ€” the high quality of the two sides only supported my opinion.

The meal came to $23.54 with tax and a 20% tip, making it the most expensive of the three meals, but not by much.

Although I had a clear favorite, I'd try each of the chains again
Outback Steakhouse

Carlo Allegri/Reuters

Each of the chains I visited is worth visiting for a decent, cheap steak meal, but Outback Steakhouse surprised me by setting a high bar.

Complimentary bread aside, the chain was my top pick across the board.

Still, I'd recommend a steak meal at Texas Roadhouse, which impressed me with its wonderfully low prices and delicious rolls. Although I'm not completely sold on LongHorn Steakhouse, I'm open to giving it another shot, especially given the fair price of the meal.

Speaking of prices โ€” to put these meals into perspective, I did some research. On average, a 6-ounce portion of sirloin steak from grocery stores near me would cost just over $5, a potato $1, a head of broccoli $2, and a loaf of bread another $2.

Based on those numbers, I'd spend about $10 just for the core ingredients of the above meals.

After factoring in other necessary ingredients, like butter and seasonings, plus the time and effort required to prep and cook everything, all of these steak meals seemed like an even better deal.

Who is Chris Malachowsky? Meet the Nvidia co-founder and inventor of the GPU

  • Chris Malachowsky is one of Nvidia's three co-founders, alongside Jensen Huang and Curtis Priem.
  • Malachowsky invented the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), and holds dozens of patents.
  • He is still with Nvidia as a senior technology executive.

The founding story of the three-plus-trillion-dollar technology juggernaut Nvidia has a humble beginning. The company's three co-founders, Jensen Huang, Curtis Priem, and Chris Malachowsky met at a Silicon Valley area Denny's restaurant to discuss leaving their current roles and forming a new company.

At the time, Malachowsky and Priem were both working for Sun Microsystems. Malachowsky had also been employed by Hewlett-Packard, and at both companies he held leading positions as a software and hardware engineer, per his Nvidia bio.

But before Malachowsky became one of the most influential engineers in the world of computing, he was on a very different path in life.

Education and early career

Malachowsky was born in the spring of 1959. By the time he entered college in the late 1970s, he was on track to follow in his father's footsteps and become a doctor, he said in an interview at the University of Southern Florida.

In the course of his pre-med studies, Malachowsky came to learn two things: firstly, he did not want to be a doctor, after all. And secondly, he was enthralled by engineering.

Malachowsky pivoted, and would receive a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1983, followed by a master's degree in the same field three years later.

And within less than a decade, Malachowsky would be there at that Denny's discussing the founding of a company that would become a dominant global player and one of the most valuable companies in the world, alongside Apple and Microsoft.

Nvidia career and creation of the GPU

When Malachowsky, Huang, and Priem founded Nvidia (Priem left the company in the early 2000s), the men knew they wanted to focus on graphics, then a rapidly developing field of computing.

Their primary focus was on developing better and better graphics processing abilities for video games, but the Nvidia team clearly grasped that graphics applications went well beyond the gaming world.

In 1999, two big things happened for Nvidia: the company went public, and the company released the world's first GPU, or graphics processing unit. Malachowsky was the chief architect of the GPU, or graphics processing unit.

GPUs enable computers to process graphics and images with much greater speed and precision than previous types of processors could handle. They have been instrumental not only in enhancing the gaming experience, but also have applications in 3D technology, AI, virtual and augmented reality, machine learning, and much more.

Malachowsky remains at Nvidia as a senior technology executive.

Beyond Nvidia

We know that Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's net worth is more than $113 billion, putting him in the rarified category of the centibillionaire. While Chris Malachowky's net worth is not publicly known, we do know plenty more.

For example, Malachowsky holds around three-dozen patents, according to the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame, including many related to computer graphics and processing.

We also know that beyond his two earned degrees, Malachowsky also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Silicon Valley and the University of Florida.

His talents also extend beyond the tech world into the arts. He was an executive producer for the Emmy Award-winning documentary Inheritance, about the daughter of a Nazi who commanded a concentration camp during WWII.

Meet Nvidia co-founder Curtis Priem, who helped found and build the AI powerhouse

13 April 2025 at 01:06

  • Curtis Priem is one of Nvidia's three co-founders, alongside Jensen Huang and Chris Malachowsky.
  • Priem left Nvidia in the early 2000s and has been actively involved in philanthropy ever since.
  • In the years since Nvidia's founding, the company has become one of the most valuable in the world.

Curtis Priem has always been forward-looking man. Even in the nascent days of computer graphics and video games, he saw the great potential that lay ahead for visual technology.

Priem poured his time and energy into graphics technology, creating the first graphics processor for a PC, the IBM Professional Graphics Adapter, according to his alma mater, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).

But there is one event upon which Priem looks back with regret: had he held onto all of the stock he once owned in the AI, software, and computer hardware juggernaut Nvidia, he would be one of the richest people alive with a net worth north of $70 billion, according to a Forbes estimate.

Instead, Priem is now worth an estimated $30 million, according to Forbes, which is more than enough to keep him living in comfort. Priem lives in an off-the-grid house near Fremont, California, not far from the headquarters of the company he co-founded in 1993.

Early career

Priem attended RPI in Troy, New York, graduating in 1982 with a degree in computer electrical engineering.

His first job after graduating from RPI was with the now-defunct tech firm Vermont Microsystems. But it was a move to California to work at Sun Microsystems that would kick his career into drive.

At Sun, Priem played a pivotal role in the development of the aforementioned graphics card, making his mark on the tech world and establishing himself as a leading figure in the design and development world.

Nvidia's founding

As the story goes โ€” corroborated in a Stanford Business School interview by Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO โ€” Huang, Priem, and Nvidia's other co-founder, Chris Malachowsky, met at a Silicon Valley Denny's restaurant to discuss their potential partnership.

Malachowsky worked at Sun Microsystems along with Priem, while Huang had worked at both LSI Logic and Advanced Micro Devices. And, famously, before graduating from Oregon State University with a degree in electrical engineering (he'd add a masters from Stanford in the same field later), Huang worked as a dishwasher at Denny's.

Nvidia was founded on April 15, 1993. The founders shared a "a vision to bring 3D graphics to the gaming and multimedia markets" and worked tirelessly to do so, with Nvidia inventing the world's first GPU, or graphics processing unit, in 1999.

That same year, Nvidia went public, with its IPO happening on January 22, 1999. Shares were valued at $12 each.

Post-Nvidia

As of 2025, Nvidia's shares had hit a peak of just below $150. This represents a massive surge in value for the company, which had share prices under $6 in late 2019.

Nvidia's surge can be directly linked to the recent rise of AI. The company's long dedication to complicated graphics processing made it well-suited to pivot to the complex world of artificial intelligence computing.

That surge has led to Jensen Huang net worth estimates above $115 billion, a staggering sum by any comparison, and it's roughly 3,833 times more than the net worth of his erstwhile partner, Priem.

A private man by most accounts, it's unknown exactly why Priem left Nvidia. He moved into his off-the-grid house in a relatively remote corner of California and today rarely ventures out except to make several annual visits to his alma mater, RPI, with which he has remained actively involved.

Priem is a note philanthropist and, including the glut of money he gave away after Nvidia's IPO, he has continued to donate money through his own Priem Family Foundation.

Who is Colette Kress? Meet the Nvidia CFO who has overseen the chipmaker's meteoric rise

12 April 2025 at 01:02
An Nvidia logo is displayed on a monitor in front of a large chart.
Colette Kress is Nvidia's chief financial officer and executive vice president, and has overseen the company's rise to one of the world's most valuable companies.

  • Colette Kress is the CFO of Nvidia, and has been instrumental in the company's success.
  • Kress has overseen the company's massive growth amid the AI boom.
  • Nvidia has become one of the world's most valuable companies.

When Colette Kress joined the chipmaker Nvidia in September 2013, the company's shares were trading for around 40 cents apiece. The following year, shares were trading for just a few pennies more.

Over a decade later, Nvidia stocks were trading for nearly $150 per share and the company had reached a market cap of well over $3 trillion.

Much or even most of Nvidia's staggering success can be attributed to the cutting-edge GPUs (graphics processing units) it makes, as these chips are high demand thanks to the AI boom.

But Kress has also played a key role in the success of the company, and has become one of Nvidia's top power players, helping to guide the chipmaker to financial success that founders Jensen Huang, Curtis Priem, and Chris Malachowsky surely never dreamt of as they agreed to found Nvidia back in 1993.

Kress' education and career history

Colette Kress holds a bachelor's degree in finance from the University of Arizona, and an MBA from Southern Methodist University, per an Nvidia bio. Her education positioned her well to take on key positions at major companies.

One of these was none other than software juggernaut Microsoft, where Kress worked for 13 years, including multiple years spent as the chief financial officer of the Server and Tools division. Kress has also worked at Cisco and Texas Instruments.

Kress' role at Nvidia

Kress usually runs Nvidia's earnings calls each quarter, and has had mostly stellar earnings to report as AI's boom saw the company's chips in high demand.

During Nvidia's February 2025 earnings call, for instance, the company reported $39.33 billion in revenue, well over estimates. Kress said during the call that demand for Nvidia's Blackwell GPU "exceeded" expectations, though Kress also warned that the impact of the Trump administration's tariffs remained a "bit of an unknown."

In the calendar year 2024, Nvidia's market cap (the value of all outstanding shares) surpassed $2 trillion and then $3 trillion, an almost unheard-of ascent that landed Nvidia among the largest companies in the world in terms of value.

Only Apple generates more revenue than Nvidia, with Microsoft trailing close behind, it also being a $3 trillion-plus company.

Kress' net worth and compensation

While Kress' net worth is unknown, we do know Kress's compensation was around $13.3 million in 2023. Based on the rising fortunes of the company, one can assume that figure has dramatically increased since then.

In fact, publicly available data shows that Nvidia employees in general saw a 17% increase in pay in the 2024 fiscal year, a much greater pay hike than most corporate workers can ever expect.

I tried Chili's '3 for Me' meal deals, and found the $11 combos had the best value and flavors

9 April 2025 at 08:17
Three entrรฉes on table at Chili's
The Chili's "3 for Me" meal specials each come with a starter, entrรฉe, and drink.

Steven John

  • Chili's "3 for Me" meal specials come with a beverage, starter, and entrรฉe for $11, $15, or $17.
  • I ordered a few and was pleased with all three appetizers, but the main courses were a mixed bag.
  • The quesadillas let me down, but I'd get the burger and chicken sandwich again or try other dishes.

For me, eating at Chili's is much like watching a Tom Hanks movie from the 1990s: It's probably not going to be the most amazing thing ever, but it's a safe bet that you'll enjoy yourself.

That was much the experience I had when I recently visited one of the chain's locations in Long Island, New York, to try the chain's "3 for Me" meal specials.

The "3 for Me" deal comes in $11, $15, and $17 tiers.
Close up of 3 for Me menu options at Chili's
I ordered a few different "3 for Me" meals at Chili's.

Steven John

The "3 for Me" deal means paying one price for a soft drink, a starter, and an entrรฉe. It has three tiers, ranging from $11 to $17.

The $11 section includes the choice of one of two burgers or a chicken sandwich. The $15 tier includes a bacon burger, Chicken Crispers, or chicken bacon ranch quesadillas.

At $17, you can get a handful of more elevated-sounding entrรฉes, like Cajun shrimp pasta or a 6-ounce sirloin steak.

The starters are either chips and salsa, a house side salad, or a cup of soup. As I ordered three meals, I got the whole flight.

For the entrรฉes, I went with the Oldtimer with cheese burger, the crispy chicken sandwich, and the chicken bacon ranch quesadillas.

I enjoyed all of the starters.
Chips and salsa at Chili's
I love chips and salsa.

Steven John

I was quite pleased to find Chili's chips tasted fresh and crunchy.

The salsa seemed mild and was flavorful with a nice, even consistency.

The salad was well-balanced and tasty but unnecessarily difficult to eat.
Salad and cup of dressing stuffed into bowl at Chili's
I don't know why my salad was served in such a tiny bowl.

Steven John

My only real issue with the starters was the serving method of the salad: the bowl was deep and narrow. It was nearly impossible to get a bite of salad without spilling a portion of it out onto the table.

I had to chop the larger leaves of lettuce up to stop them from catapulting cheese and croutons every which way.

Once my ingredients were cut down to size some, I was pleased with the balance of greens, tomatoes, cheese, and croutons. The thousand-island dressing was tangy and tasty.

The potato soup was rich and flavorful.

Chili's potato soup seemed generously loaded with bacon and onions.

Steven John

I love a good potato soup, and Chili's version of the dish didn't disappoint.

The soup was hearty and generously loaded with bacon, green onions, and cheese, and I would've welcomed an even larger bowl of it.

Chili's serves a solid cheeseburger.
Burger and fries at Chili's
The Oldtimer with cheese impressed me.

Steven John

Chili's Oldtimer with cheese burger from the $11 tier was quite good.

It came with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, pickles, diced red onion, and mustard, and was served beside a pile of thick fries.

The bun was warm and soft, the burger was well-assembled, and the ingredients seemed well-balanced. Each played its part well: the lettuce added crunch, the pickles added tang and sour notes, the tomato added freshness and moisture, and so on.

The patty itself was broad and rather thin, it seemed like it was cooked smash-style. I'd 100% order this burger again and recommend it to others as well.

I also found the chicken sandwich to be a pretty great value.
Chicken sandwich and fries at Chili's
The pickles felt a little overpowering on the chicken sandwich I got at Chili's.

Steven John

Also from the $11 tier, Chili's crispy chicken sandwich comes with pickles and mayo on a brioche bun.

I'm not the biggest pickle fan and felt they tasted a bit overpowering here, but if you like them, you'll probably love this sandwich that I merely liked.

The piece of chicken was excellent โ€” thick enough to feel satisfying but not so thick it was tough to bite. Again, I appreciated the notably large pile of fries served with the sandwich.

The priciest meal let me down the most.
Quesadilla slices, salsa, sour cream, lettuce on plate at Chili's
The chicken bacon ranch quesadillas didn't impress me with their texture.

Steven John

At first, I was most excited about the chicken bacon ranch quesadillas from the $15 tier. Unfortunately, this was the most disappointing entrรฉe I tried.

The plating of the quesadillas was solid: eight little wedges ringed a pile of shredded lettuce, a dollop of sour cream, a serving of pico de gallo, and a cup of ranch sauce.

However, I was worried as I grabbed the first piece of quesadilla. It felt limp, damp, and faintly rubbery to me. The flavor wasn't much better.

I didn't really taste the chicken or bacon and just felt like I was just eating a lot of cheese sandwiched between subpar tortillas.

Even when I tried a second wedge fully dressed up with all of the aforementioned fixings, I just didn't like the dish.

I definitely found value in Chili's "3 for Me" deals.
Hand holding Chili's menu
I'd definitely consider ordering from Chili's "3 for Me" menu again in the future.

Steven John

Overall, I'd say the chicken sandwich and burger meal deals both felt like a great value at the $11 price tier. The starters all impressed me and those entrรฉes were both filling and came with plenty of fries.

The savings really speak for themselves, too. If I'd ordered the Oldtimer ($13) and cup of soup ($6) with a fountain drink ($3) separately, I'd have paid over $20.

I'd absolutely be open to trying other dishes on the "3 for Me" menu, though I can't see myself getting those quesadillas again.

I tried grilled cheese sandwiches from Sonic, Shake Shack, and Five Guys. My favorite was also the least expensive.

8 April 2025 at 09:02

Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich offered the best overall value.

Steven John

  • I tried grilled cheese sandwiches from Sonic, Shake Shack, and Five Guys.
  • I thought the grilled cheese from Five Guys was overpriced.
  • Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich was my favorite for overall value.

A grilled cheese sandwich is one of the ultimate comfort foods. It's a simple meal to make at home, but I was curious to see which fast-food restaurant made the best version of the classic sandwich.

So, I went to Sonic, Shake Shack, and Five Guys to see how their grilled cheese sandwiches stacked up against each other. Here's how it went.

Prices may vary by location.

The first restaurant I visited was Sonic.

Sonic has more than 3,500 locations across the US.

Shutterstock

Sonic was originally founded in 1953 as a root beer stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma, called Top Hat. The chain's name was changed in 1959 and the rest is history. Sonic now has more than 3,500 locations across 46 states.

Sonic's grilled cheese was definitely priced to sell at just $3.25.

There certainly was plenty of cheese.

I was satisfied with Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich.

Steven John

Sonic's sandwich was the messiest of the bunch, with a decent amount of cheese oozing out the sides of the bread. However, the sandwich was full-sized, generously laden with cheese, and toasted well.

The bread was thick and spongy, and although the cheese definitely had a slightly artificial taste (as American cheese tends to, in my opinion), this was a satisfying sandwich that was 100% worth the money.

Next, I went to Shake Shack.

What once started as a Madison Square Park hot dog cart has grown into a chain with more than 580 locations worldwide. Although the chain is perhaps best known for its burgers and fries, it sells grilled cheese sandwiches, too.

Mine cost $6, which seemed a bit steep having just come from Sonic.

The sandwich tasted good, but was a bit small.

The grilled cheese from Shake Shack was on the smaller side.

Steven John

The sandwich tasted like a homemade grilled cheese, with a good balance of cheese and toasted bread.

However, it seemed to be much smaller than Sonic's offering, leaving me disappointed.

My last stop was Five Guys.

The famous burger chain was founded in 1986 and has expanded from a family business in Arlington, Virginia, to about 1,700 locations worldwide.

I paid $7 for my grilled cheese sandwich.

The sandwich was pricey but delicious.

I enjoyed the thick, buttery bread from Five Guys.

Steven John

The grilled cheese from Five Guys was the best tasting of the bunch. It was cooked fresh after I ordered, and was hot and melty when served.

The thick, buttery bread was delightful, and although the cheese was a bit overdone, it tasted great.

When I'm looking for a fast-food grilled cheese sandwich, price matters more than quality.
Half of each of the author's grilled cheese sandwiches from Five Guys, Shake Shack, and Sonic arranged on a plate.
Sonic's grilled cheese sandwich offered the best overall value.

Steven John

The only problem I had with Five Guys' sandwich was the price tag. At $7, it cost more than double that of the grilled cheese from Sonic, and was neither twice as good nor twice as big.

So, next time I want a fast-food grilled cheese sandwich, I'm heading to Sonic because its tasty offering sells for a great price.

My family tried all the $7 meal deals at IHOP. After some disappointments, we found one was an incredible value.

2 April 2025 at 04:48
Plates of eggs, bacon, pancakes on table at IHOP
My family tried all the $7 specials available at IHOP right now, and there's only one I'd ever order again.

Steven John

  • I tried all four of IHOP's $7 House Faves meals, each of which comes with a protein and a starch.
  • The French-toast breakfast was entirely worth $7, and I'd recommend it and order it again myself.
  • The other three meals disappointed me, but I'd be open to giving two of them another chance.

As many chain restaurants raise prices, some are adding value meals and special deals to draw consumers in. Enter: IHOP and its entire House Faves menu dedicated to $7 dishes (at some locations, they're only $6).

Paying that price for a full meal sounds like a great deal any way you cut it, especially since $7 won't even get you a burger and fries at some fast-food chains right now.

However, if the meal you get for that great price isn't very good, you're not actually coming out on top.

Curious to see how good of a value the chain's value dishes really are, I took my kids to an IHOP in Long Island, New York.

The $7 menu had four options when I visited.

The House Faves menu is available on weekdays.

Steven John

IHOP's House Faves meals are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. During my visit, I found four meals on offer.

The first is the Breakfast Faves combo, which consists of two eggs any way you want them, two strips of bacon or sausage links, and two pancakes.

Next, the French-toast breakfast, which comes with a thick slice of French toast, eggs any way, and your choice of bacon or sausage.

Then, there's the house scramble, which comes with scrambled eggs with chopped bacon and jack and cheddar cheese, plus hash browns.

Finally, there's a ham and cheese omelet served with pancakes.

I liked the pancakes in the Breakfast Faves combo, but the eggs let me down.
Pancakes, eggs on plate at IHOP
Since we were at IHOP, we started with its namesake food.

Steven John

Simply put, the IHOP pancakes were good. They were fluffy, yet dense (maybe substantial is a better word?) with a rich buttermilk flavor.

I wouldn't say they're great โ€” the lump of butter heaped onto their top makes the center too mushy if left to sit too long โ€” but they're definitely worth ordering.

The bacon was pretty tasty, too. It was crisp in some bits but not dried out and still had that pleasant chewiness in the thicker parts.

However, I wish the sunny-side-up eggs had been cooked longer. They felt watery and didn't look or taste great.

As my daughter happily chowed down on pancakes, my son, who is quite the foodie, took one look at the spread out before us and decided he'd wait to eat until we got home.

Cautiously optimistic, I carried on.

The house scramble was OK.

I wasn't blown away by the hash browns or house scramble.

Steven John

IHOP's house scramble was decent, but it didn't seem to be cooked consistently throughout. It contained a decent amount of bacon, but some bites were wetter than others.

The hash browns it came with didn't taste like much of anything to me and were pretty dry โ€” the potato shreds fell apart as soon as I stabbed them with my fork.

I didn't care for the omelet.
Ham and cheese omelet at IHOP
The omelet seemed to have a lot of ham on top of it but not inside.

Steven John

The omelet's ingredients felt poorly distributed, with too much ham scattered atop it and very little mixed in.

It was slathered in what the IHOP menu calls a "white cheese sauce" that was a bit too gelatinous for my liking. I thought the eggs had a somewhat watery consistency and artificial taste that I didn't love.

I would not order it again.

The French-toast breakfast was our only true winner.
French toast, eggs on plate at IHOP
IHOP impressed me with its French toast.

Steven John

OK, now for some good news: the French-toast breakfast was tasty and well worth its price โ€” and then some.

The slab of French toast itself was thick and spongy, flavored with cinnamon and syrup, and topped with powdered sugar. It was sweet but not cloyingly so, and it was hefty enough to satisfy even a hungry stomach.

The scrambled eggs served with the French toast were the best eggs of the meals we tried. They seemed cooked evenly and not overdone. Again, the bacon it came with was tasty.

I'd gladly shell out $7 again for the French-toast breakfast and would recommend you do the same.

With better eggs, the Breakfast Faves combo would've been fine, so I'd be open to trying it again. There's also a chance I just got a bad batch of hash browns โ€” so I wouldn't rule the scramble out, either.

However, I won't be giving that omelet any second chances.

My family tried all the original pizzas at California Pizza Kitchen. There's only one we'd never order again.

14 March 2025 at 10:47
four pizzas from california pizza kitchen
My family ordered the four original pies from California Pizza Kitchen to find the best one.

Steven John

  • California Pizza Kitchen has four original pizzas that have been on the menu for decades.
  • Barbecue chicken and California club were both delicious, but wild mushroom was a favorite.
  • However, the California veggie pizza disappointed us, and I wouldn't order it again.

I'm a huge fan of California Pizza Kitchen. I lived in Los Angeles for nearly a dozen years and frequented several locations of the chain during that time.

Luckily, the chain also has a location near my house in New York.

My family and I recently ordered the four original pizzas at CPK โ€” California club, California veggie, barbecue chicken, and wild mushroom โ€” to see which one is best.

We opted to make one of them half plain cheese so my youngest child would have a safer fallback option for dinner. However, it turns out we didn't need it because there were several family favorites.

Here's how the original pies stacked up.

The California club is a true classic.

The California club pizza came topped with avocado slices.

Steven John

Per the CPK website, the California club pizza features avocado, applewood smoked bacon, mayo, fresh lettuce, and tomatoes. We could also add oven-roasted turkey or grilled chicken.

My wife and daughter are vegetarians, so we opted for bacon on just half of the pizza and skipped the added meat.

Although consuming this is a messy affair that almost necessitates eating with utensils (or alone in the dark), the California club is just a delight of a pizza.

The crunch of the lettuce (ours also had arugula), the thick chunks of avocado, and the pizza all complement one another wonderfully in taste and texture.

I appreciated that it had sizable chunks of bacon, the appropriate amount of mayo, and fresh-tasting tomatoes.

I still love the original barbecue-chicken pizza from CPK.

The barbecue-chicken pizza was one of my go-to orders at CPK.

Steven John

One of my go-to orders at CPK over the years has always been the original barbecue chicken, which is topped with barbecue sauce, chicken, smoked Gouda, red onions, and cilantro.

Tangy and almost spicy (but with no real kick), this pizza works so well because the relatively few toppings each stand out while also working together.

The onion is potent but not overpowering, the cilantro adds a flash of herbal flavor, the chicken is heaped on generously, and the barbecue sauce ties everything together.

To be fair, my son didn't much care for this pizza, so I can already attest to it not being a universal winner. But he did eat every bite of one piece โ€ฆ and I happily ate the rest of the pizza myself.

The wild-mushroom pizza was a family favorite.

I don't like mushrooms, but my family loved the fungi pizza.

Steven John

I loathe mushrooms, so I was glad to have some folks along with me willing to do the hard work of taste-testing. My wife and son both said CPK's wild-mushroom pizza was the best of the night.

And indeed, I'll allow that it looked like one good pizza. It's topped with shaved Cremini mushrooms, extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, slivered scallions, Romano and mozzarella, cheese, and cracked black pepper.

The mushrooms were layered on evenly without being piled up, which helped some of them crisp up.

I'm told the pie's flavor was mildly earthy and vaguely meaty (even though the pizza is vegetarian) and that the blend of cheeses was excellent.

We won't be ordering the California veggie again.
california veggie pizza from california pizza kitchen
I didn't like the texture of the veggies on the pizza.

Steven John

Granted, there's a chance that we ended up with a uniquely bad showing of this pizza, but all the other pies seemed normal, so I doubt it. I think everyone in my family just thoroughly dislikes CPK's California veggie pizza.

The pizza comes topped with Broccolini, grilled zucchini, shaved Cremini mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, corn, red onions, and mozzarella. (I picked the mushrooms off, but my wife and son tucked in as-is.)

Usually, a plethora of toppings is welcome on a pie, but in this case, there was too much piled on the crust.

The veggies seemed overcooked and soggy, which negatively affected the texture of the pizza. The pie had hardly any sauce to speak of.

Also, in my opinion, Broccolini has no business being on pizza in the first place. I'm even on the fence about zucchini, but it's a moot point, as this pizza will never be on my table again.

Overall, the CPK original pies were mostly winners.
half mushroom half cheese pizza from california pizza kitchen
My family's favorite was the wild mushroom, but I'm a fan of the barbecue chicken and the California club.

Steven John

The barbecue-chicken pizza was always my go-to, and it still holds up.

Because of the variety of ingredients, the California club is like a salad and entrรฉe in one tasty package โ€” I highly recommend it.

Although I can't vouch for it personally, my family loved the mild, earthy flavors of the wild-mushroom pizza.

The one pie we all agreed to skip in the future was the California veggie. The texture didn't win us over, and it seemed like proof some toppings don't belong on a pizza.

I tried Outback Steakhouse's 3-course meal deal for $15. The value is so good that I'd get it again despite my disappointments.

13 March 2025 at 12:34
menu for outback steakhouse meal deal
I tried Outback Steakhouse's $15 Aussie three-course meal deal.

Steven John

  • I went to Outback Steakhouse to try its Aussie three-course meal deal in the $15 tier.
  • I got a baked-potato soup, a Bloomin' burger with a side of broccoli, and a slice of cheesecake.
  • With tax, my bill came to just $16.28, which I think is more than worth it for the food I got.

I have no illusions about what to expect when I walk into an Outback Steakhouse.

At the chain, I assume I'll get food that tastes good though probably not great. It's comfort dining: the menu is vast, the calorie count is often pretty high, and the flavors are familiar.

However, at Outback, like at many chain restaurants these days, the food isn't exactly cheap. An appetizer of those famous Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie, for example, will run you about $16, a steakhouse salad $18, and a 13-ounce ribeye nearly $30.

With that in mind, I was skeptical of its limited-time Aussie three-course meal deal, which comes in three tiers: $15, $19, or $22. It's only available for dine-in customers and can vary by location.

On a recent visit to Outback, I went with the $15 meal. Here's how it went.

For my first course, I chose soup instead of a salad.

I got a bowl of baked-potato soup.

Steven John

For my starter, I could choose baked-potato soup, a house salad, or a Caesar salad. (There were also two other soup and two other salad options available for a modest additional fee.)

I went with the baked-potato soup, as I adore potato soups.

Unfortunately, this one was just not that great. I found it to be too salty, too thin, and not quite hot enough when it was served to me.

I appreciated the cheese, green onions, and bacon toppings, but the soup itself let me down.

The burger I chose felt like a high point of the meal deal.

My burger was a great deal.

Steven John

For my entrรฉe, I could choose the Bloomin' Burger or one of three shrimp dishes.

I went with the burger, which cost $15.50 on its own. The fact that my full three-course meal was just $15 illustrates the true savings at play here.

The burger was, as expected, good but not great. It came topped with Outback's signature Bloomin' Onion petals and Bloom sauce, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion.

It was so messy to eat that I quickly reverted to a knife-and-fork approach. Unfortunately, the pickles seemed more like flavorless cucumber coins than anything else.

However, the meat was properly cooked, the lettuce and tomato seemed fresh, and the sauce was tangy and applied liberally without being gratuitous.

Had I paid $15.50 for the burger alone, I'd have been disappointed. For a three-course meal costing slightly less than that price, I was plenty satisfied with the entrรฉe.

I got a side of broccoli with my burger.
aussie three-course meal deal from outback steakhouse
I wasn't a fan of the side.

Steven John

Each entrรฉe in this deal comes with a side. In an attempt to balance out the calories of the burger (and the soup and cake), I went with broccoli.

Other side options were fries, a baked potato, mixed veggies, or a small salad.

Unfortunately, I wasn't satisfied. The broccoli seemed so overcooked it was almost mush. I only ate a few pieces in the name of writing a thorough review, not because it was at all tasty.

The meal ended with cheesecake, and I got to choose the sauce.
cheesecake with chocolate sauce
I got chocolate sauce on my dessert.

Steven John

For the final course, diners get a slice of New York-style cheesecake with either raspberry or chocolate sauce. (Or I could've upgraded to the Chocolate Thunder from Down Under brownie with ice cream for an extra $3).

I went with the chocolate sauce. Overall, the cheesecake was fine, albeit nothing amazing.

It was sweet without being cloyingly so, and the overall flavor was lightly tangy and, of course, creamy. I didn't mind the texture.

Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of cheesecake, so I called in my wife and kids to try it also, and they were all plenty happy with the dessert.

The food wasn't life-changing, but the price was so good.
aussie three-course meal deal from outback steakhouse
I'd come back for this meal at Outback Steakhouse.

Steven John

All in all, I'd order the Aussie three-course meal deal again.

Next time, I'd probably try my luck with a salad and a different side dish. I'd also be open to trying the shrimp entrรฉes that are also available at the $15 price tier.

My family's been making 4-ingredient baguettes for years, and I think everyone should know our easy recipe

5 March 2025 at 08:08
two freshly baked baguettes on a cookie sheet
If you don't devour it right away, the bread will stay very fresh for two days.

Steven John

  • Baguettes are surprisingly easy to make and go well with so many meals.
  • Not counting the optional egg wash, my family's bread recipe only calls for four ingredients.
  • The timing is the only part that can be a little tricky, so make sure to keep your eye on the clock.

If you can think of anything that's both as simple and as satisfying as French bread, I'm all ears.

Luckily, my family has been making foolproof baguettes that only call for four ingredients and an optional egg wash for years.

Here's our bread recipe.

Start by gathering the basic ingredients.
flour, yeast, salt, oil, and an egg on a counter for a bread recipe
I usually keep flour, yeast, and salt in my pantry at all times.

Steven John

My family's recipe mostly uses things I already have in my pantry on a regular basis.

For two baguettes, you'll need:

ยท 5 (generous) cups of all-purpose flour

ยท 5 teaspoons of active yeast

ยท 1 teaspoon of salt

ยท 2 cups of warm water

ยท (optional) 1 egg + ยผ cup water for egg wash

For the equipment, I like to use a stand mixer with a bread-hook attachment, a large bowl, and a cookie sheet.

Mix the dry ingredients.
hand pouring a teaspoon of yeast into a bowl of flower
I start with two cups of flour and add the rest later on.

Steven John

Combine two cups of flour with the yeast and salt in a stand mixer, briefly turning it on to stir the dry ingredients together.

Form a base dough and gradually add all the flour.
bread dough in a kitchen stand mixer
Since I use a stand mixer with a bread hook, I don't end up having to knead the dough.

Steven John

Pour two cups of warm water โ€” around 110 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal โ€” into the stand mixer and run it on low for one minute to form a sticky base dough.

Add the remaining three cups of flour to the mixer and run it on a low speed for about five minutes. A thicker, semi-sticky dough ball should form.

Then, remove the dough from the mixer, form it into a ball, and place it into a greased bowl. I recommend using olive oil.

Let the dough rest for about an hour.

The dough rises best in a warm spot.

Steven John

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and place it somewhere warm for one hour.

I usually set my dough near a floor heating vent, but places like a closet with a water heater or even a warm bathroom also work well.

If you let your dough rise in the bathroom, make sure the bowl has an air-tight seal.

The dough should rise quite a bit.

You can press into the dough with your fingers to release the excess air.

Steven John

When the dough has doubled in size, press the excess air from it with clean hands and roll it into two balls. Set these aside as you prep a cookie sheet with parchment paper and a dusting of flour.

You'll also want to prep a dry, smooth workspace on your counter with a heavy dusting of flour.

Flatten the dough balls out and roll them into long batons.
hand rolling up a sheet of flattened bread dough
I roll the dough out into large ovals before shaping the bread.

Steven John

Using a rolling pin, roll the dough balls out into flat, roughly ovular shapes โ€” about 16-by-12 inches big and no more than ยผ inch thick.

Starting at one of the longer edges, roll the flattened dough into a long tube and pinch the ends shut.

Transfer to baguettes to a cookie sheet for another rest period.
two uncooked baguettes prooving on a cookie sheet covered in plastic
If you're using an egg wash, brush it on before the second proof.

Steven John

Place each dough tube on the prepared cookie sheet. If you're using the optional egg wash, combine the egg with ยผ cup of water in a small bowl. Lightly brush the mixture across both tubes of dough.

If you like crustier bread, I recommend using the egg wash. Without it, you'll get a softer baguette.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest again for 20 minutes. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Slash the risen dough for looks and texture.
knife cutting into a risen baguette dough
I like to make around 10 slices on the top of the dough.

Steven John

Once the 20 minutes are up and the tubes have risen slightly, remove the plastic and diagonally slash the dough about 10 times with a serrated knife.

This is partially just for looks, but it also encourages the bread to expand while baking.

Bake, egg wash again, and rotate the pan in the oven.
two partially cooked baguettes on a cookie sheet
I make sure to turn the pan around in the oven to evenly cook the bread.

Steven John

Bake the bread for 20 minutes, do another egg wash, and return the dough to the oven with the pan rotated โ€” if you're not using an egg wash, simply rotate the pan so all sides of the dough bake evenly.

Bake for another 15 minutes.

Remove the bread from the oven, get it off the cookie sheets, and enjoy.
two freshly baked baguettes on a cookie sheet
If you don't devour it right away, the bread will stay very fresh for two days.

Steven John

When the bread is ready to come out, quickly transfer the baguettes from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack.

The baguettes stay fresh for two days, and I think the texture is still OK on the third.

You can also freeze baguettes if you want them to last longer. To thaw them out, heat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, turn the heat off, and pop the frozen bread into the warmed oven for about 10 minutes.

I tried chicken tenders from Sonic, KFC, and Smashburger. I had a clear winner and one serious disappointment.

25 February 2025 at 06:06
chicken tenders from kfc, smashburger, and sonic
I ordered chicken tenders at KFC, Smashburger, and Sonic to find the best chain.

Steven John

  • I tried chicken tenders at Sonic, KFC, & Smashburger to see which fast-food chain has the best ones.
  • Smashburger's chicken tenders were large, generously breaded, and all-around excellent.
  • However, I thought KFC's tenders were a disappointment in every way โ€” including the price.

There are many fast-food chains out there, but it can be hard to know which place has the best flavor and value when it comes to chicken tenders.

So, I recently ordered chicken tenders from multiple chains โ€” Kentucky Fried Chicken, Sonic, and Smashburger โ€” to see which I preferred.

I ate them all plain (no dipping sauces), so nothing could influence the true flavor or texture. Here's how it went.

I started my fast-food tour at Smashburger.
outside a smashburger location
Smashburger is a Denver-based fast-food chain.

Steven John

Smashburger is a newer kid on the fast-food block. The first location opened in Denver in 2007, and there are now over 200 shops across the US and Canada.

I paid $8.68 for an order of chicken tenders, which came with three pieces.

Smashburger's chicken tenders were almost like mini fried chicken breasts.
chicken tenders form smashburger
Smashburger's chicken tenders seemed huge.

Steven John

Even though the order only came with three, the tenders were impressively big โ€” easily twice as large as the other chains.

The breading was thick and crispy, and the flavor profile was savory and lightly salty. Still, the tenders were begging for a dipping sauce, or even to be popped into a wrap or sandwich.

Despite that, I was entirely happy with Smashburger's tenders.

KFC was next on the list.
outside a kfc location
KFC is known for its chicken, so I had high hopes.

Steven John

Contrary to its name, the first KFC franchise location opened in Salt Lake City in the 1950s. However, founder Harland "Colonel" Sanders laid the groundwork for the chain in Kentucky a few decades earlier.

My order of three chicken tenders cost me $8.90, making them the most expensive, but they also came with a biscuit.

KFC's chicken tenders let me down.
chicken tenders from kfc
KFC's chicken tenders looked surprisingly small.

Steven John

For a fast-food chain named for its chicken, I was a little disappointed by its tenders.

To start, they were easily half the size of the ones from Smashburger, and they appeared to be unevenly breaded.

They tasted salty but otherwise unremarkable. Sauce would definitely help, but the texture was a bit of a dealbreaker for me โ€” I found the tenders a little tough and chewy.

I even took bites of each one to make sure I didn't just get a proverbial bad apple.

Sonic had the cheapest tenders.
outside a sonic location
Sonic had the biggest chicken-tender order.

Steven John

Sonic is an Oklahoma-based fast-food chain that's known for its drive-in and drive-thru options. Customers don't actually go inside to order or eat.

A five-piece order of chicken tenders cost me $6.83, making it the cheapest of the bunch.

Sonic's chicken tenders are well-priced and good enough for a repeat purchase.
chicken tenders from sonic
Sonic's chicken tenders were fine.

Steven John

Sonic's tenders were much smaller than those from Smashburger โ€” but there were five of them, so I still felt like I was getting my money's worth.

The texture of the chicken was โ€” true to its name โ€” tender. The breading, however, was on the thinner side, and there wasn't much flavor beyond a mild saltiness.

I think tenders really are meant to be enjoyed with sauce, and the uniform narrowness of these makes them especially good for dipping or putting in a wrap.

Overall, there was a clear winner for me.
chicken tenders from kfc, smashburger, and sonic
I preferred the Smashburger chicken tenders (center).

Steven John

Without a doubt, Smashburger had my favorite chicken tenders. They were massive, and I liked the generous amount of breading.

I'm sure I'll get them again โ€” though next time, I'll probably try ordering the chain's spicy tenders for more flavor.

On the other side of the scale, I won't be going back to KFC for tenders. They were the most expensive, and I got the least amount of chicken. Even with a biscuit, the value just wasn't there for me.

Sonic may not have been my top choice, but I still think its chicken tenders are a good deal. They were cheap, and they're a great size and shape for dipping.

My family loves my homemade pizza dough. There's one upfront investment, but the recipe is so easy that I make it once a week.

20 February 2025 at 07:12
hand holding a slice of pizza
I make my easy pizza-dough recipe for my family once a week.

Aoy_Charin/Shutterstock

  • I've figured out how to make quick and foolproof homemade pizza dough.
  • My secret weapon is my bread machine, which cuts down on so much hands-on work.
  • The dough can be used an hour after it comes out of the machine, but a longer rise is better.

I'm not sure exactly how or when it happened, but at some point, Wednesday became pizza night for my family.

We often mix up the toppings, cheese blends, and sauces, but I've been using the same dough recipe for the last five years. At this point, I can make it from scratch while hardly even paying attention to what I'm doing.

My secret weapon? A bread machine.

The appliance isn't exactly cheap โ€” usually at least $100 โ€” but it makes things so much easier. Since I use it at least once a week, I'd say it's worth the investment.

Here's how I make my foolproof homemade pizza dough.

It takes fewer than 10 ingredients to make the dough.
ingredients for pizza dough on a counter
The recipe calls for three different types of flour.

Steven John

To make the dough, I use three kinds of flour: 2 cups of bread, 1 cup of all-purpose, and a heaping ยฝ cup of whole wheat.

The other ingredients are 1 ยผ cup of water, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of honey, a scant teaspoon of salt, and 2 teaspoons of yeast.

Sometimes, I also add basil (or another herb, like rosemary or thyme). I usually eyeball that, but when in doubt, go with a teaspoon.

Thanks to the bread maker, my work is done in minutes.
hand pouring yeast into a bread machine
The yeast should go in at the end of all the ingredients.

Steven John

The process of making the dough is very simple, but the ingredients should go into the machine in a specific order.

First, add the water, followed by the salt, honey, and olive oil.

Next, add the bread flour, the all-purpose flour, and then the whole-wheat flour. The yeast and herbs (if you're using any) go in last.

Run the bread maker on the dough cycle.
pizza dough in a bread machine
It takes an hour and a half for my machine to make the dough.

Steven John

Once all the ingredients are in, I set the bread maker to the dough cycle. On my machine, it takes about an hour and a half.

You don't want to leave the dough sitting in there for very long after the cycle ends because it could start trying to rise inside the confined machine.

I set an alarm to be ready right when the bread machine goes off, and I always have a gallon-sized sealable plastic bag at the ready.

Transfer the pizza dough to a sealed bag.
pizza dough in a gallon sized bag
I check to make sure the bag doesn't pop open during the resting period.

Steven John

Once the cycle has run, remove the pizza dough from the bread machine and tuck it into a plastic bag.

Seal the bag and leave it out on a flat surface in a room-temperature space. If your house is on the colder side, that may need to be near an air vent.

Let the dough rise for at least one hour, but ideally, I like to let it do its thing for three.

I also make sure to check the bag periodically because gas released by the expanding dough may pop it open if it's not occasionally released.

There's one more (optional) step of prep work before you stretch out your dough.
pizza dough stretched out onto a pan
I oil and flour my pizza pan.

Steven John

After the three-hour rise, I like to chill my dough in the fridge for about half an hour. I think it makes it a bit easier to work with, but the step is optional if you're in a rush.

If you chill the dough, remove it from the fridge at least half an hour before you need it.

I prefer to stretch my dough on a pizza pan that's been lightly coated with olive oil and heavily floured. If you want to spin your pizza in the air by hand, though, go for it.

It's pizza time.

We mix it up with our pizza toppings.

Steven John

Once the dough is stretched โ€” which can take a bit, as it's highly elastic โ€” let it rest for a few minutes before adding on the sauce, cheese, and toppings.

When you're satisfied with your creation, bake it at 500 degrees Fahrenheit (or as close as your oven can get to that) for about 12 minutes.

My family loves my fool-proof waffle recipe. One ingredient really makes all the difference.

11 February 2025 at 07:12
plate of waffles and a fried egg
I like to serve my easy homemade waffles with syrup.

Steven John

  • I've developed a simple, eight-ingredient waffle recipe that always turns out great.
  • Waffles pair nicely with all my family's favorite breakfast foods, from eggs and bacon to fruit.
  • These waffles also freeze well and can be quickly heated up in the toaster.

If you love waffles but find yourself intimidated by the process of making them, you're in the right place.

Over the years, I've developed a straightforward waffle recipe that consistently yields delicious results my whole family loves. If you're willing to invest in a waffle iron โ€” or dust off the one that's been hiding in your cabinet โ€” it's incredibly simple.

Here's my recipe for six large, Belgian-style waffles.

Start with the dry ingredients.
dry ingredients for waffles in a metal bowl with a whisk
I usually have all the dry ingredients in my pantry.

Steven John

In a medium-sized bowl, mix together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and ยฝ teaspoon of salt.

Sugar is often considered a wet ingredient in baking, but I've found it best to toss it in with the dry in this recipe.

Then, whisk together the wet ingredients.
three bowls with butter, eggs, and milk in them
The milk should be warm.

Steven John

The wet ingredients are also simple: butter, eggs, milk, and vanilla extract.

Start by bringing 1 ยฝ cups of milk to room temperature and melting 6 tablespoons of butter. That may seem like a lot of butter to you, but unlike some waffle recipes, I don't use any oil.

In a clean, medium-sized bowl, thoroughly whisk two eggs until the whites and yolks are well-combined, then add the milk, melted butter, and a generous teaspoon of vanilla extract. Whisk until thoroughly combined.

The absolute key ingredient in this recipe is the vanilla. It adds enough flavor and sweetness that I can totally get away with just adding the 2 teaspoons of sugar.

Add the wet to the dry.
hand mixing a bowl of ingredients for waffles
I like to use a whisk to combine all the ingredients.

Steven John

Carefully pour the wet ingredients into the dry and get to whisking. You'll need to work the batter until it is even and smooth, with no clumps or pockets of powder lurking in the bowl.

If the mixture seems too dry, add a splash of milk. If it looks too wet, add a dash of flour.

Meanwhile, as you whisk, heat up your waffle iron, coating it lightly with a cooking spray.

Pour the batter onto the waffle iron in batches.
waffle batter on a waffle iron
You don't want to fill the iron all the way with batter.

Steven John

Every waffle iron is a bit different, but I've found that across the board, it's helpful to use a bit less batter than you may think necessary.

You can always add more once you get the hang of it, but I want to prevent the stuff from oozing out the sides and causing a big mess.

Most irons will beep at you when your waffle is done, but keep a close eye regardless. Don't hesitate to cook them longer than the appliance tells you if you want them crispy.

My waffles are best served fresh.
four waffles on a wire cooling rack
Keep the waffles in a warm oven if you aren't eating them right away.

Steven John

In my experience, waffles get soggy kind of quickly. If I'm not eating them fresh off the iron, I like to keep them on a baking sheet in a warm oven set to 200 degrees Fahrenheit until it's time to eat.

My family serves the finished waffles with things like syrup, butter, whipped cream, fruit, and chocolate sauce.

To make them a part of a more well-rounded breakfast, we'll also set out eggs, bacon, or sausage.

One of my favorite things about these waffles is that they freeze wonderfully well. Let them cool to room temperature before popping them in freezer-safe bags or containers. Then, reheat them as needed in a standard toaster, a larger toaster oven, or a regular oven.

I tried P.F. Chang's 'chef's feast' for just $23 a person. It was a legitimately good meal deal with multiple courses.

5 February 2025 at 07:28

I tried P.F. Chang's "chef's feast" meal deal.

Steven John

  • I tried P.F. Chang's "chef's feast" for two, which is a three-course meal deal for $23 a person.
  • There were some misses, but most of the dishes were excellent, and I'd order them again.
  • The same meal would've cost me over $20 more if I hadn't used the meal deal.

These days, if I can find an excellent meal that costs less than $25 a person, I grab a seat at the table and order.

So, I recently found myself at the American Asian bistro chain P.F. Chang's to try its "chef's feast" for two.

The meal deal includes three prix-fixe courses for $23 a person, and I wanted to see if it was worth it.

Both starters had pros and cons.

I tried both the egg-drop soup and the house salad.

Steven John

The first course consists of either egg-drop soup, hot-and-sour soup, or the restaurant's house salad. Since this deal is meant for two people, I got to pick two starters.

I went with the egg-drop soup and house salad.

The soup was loaded with ingredients, including plenty of sliced vegetables. However, I thought the flavors tasted a little too bland to be exciting.

I actually wished it were saltier, a rarity for these kinds of broth-based soups.

The salad tasted great, but it was a little overdressed for my liking. The tangy soy- and sesame-flavored dressing was tasty, but the lettuce was almost sopping with the stuff, and the wontons quickly lost their crispiness.

I also found the tall bowl it was served in rather hard to eat out of. Each time I tried to get a good stab with my fork, it wobbled and threatened to tip over.

The appetizer was an absolute success.

I loved the pork spring rolls from P.F. Chang's.

Steven John

The meal deal included one shared appetizer, and there were four to choose from. I went with the pork spring rolls, which were absolutely a high point of the meal.

They were well formed, holding their structure even after I took a bite. The wrapper was also pleasantly crispy, and the filling was savory and flavorful.

I loved the blend of cabbage, garlic, and ginger. The duck sauce was a bit thinner than I'm used to. However, it was flavorful and did the job.

My chicken entrรฉe was pretty good.

I tried the crispy honey chicken at P.F. Chang's.

Steven John

For my first of two entrรฉes, I ordered the crispy honey chicken, which is one of six options available.

I really enjoyed the texture. The fried exterior wasn't too thick or too thin, and it was nice and crunchy.

The honey flavor was pleasant but simply not powerful enough for me. I also would've appreciated some added spice to give everything a little more oomph.

The entrรฉe wasn't bad, but it was nice to know I was at least getting a good deal on it.

I'm glad I saved room for the beef lo mein.

I preferred the beef lo mein between the two appetizers.

Steven John

For my second entrรฉe, I chose the restaurant's signature lo mein with beef.

The lo mein noodles were excellent โ€” cooked to perfection and flavored well. The word "heaping" came to mind. I certainly couldn't finish them all, especially alongside the other courses.

I also appreciated all the sliced vegetables.

The thinly sliced beef was tender and flavorful, but my one complaint was that there just wasn't enough of it. Frankly, I would've wanted almost twice as much.

The deal saved me money and I was pretty satisfied with my food.

I saved more than $20 by ordering the "chef's feast" at P.F. Chang's.

Steven John

If I ordered everything I got off the regular menu without this meal deal, it would've cost me over $72.

Although I don't think that's necessarily a bad price for two starters, a shared appetizer, and two entrรฉes, it just made the deal even more impressive to me.

Thanks to the special, my meal cost $50 after tax.

That's not much more than I'd pay for dinner at a diner โ€” or even some of the higher-priced fast-food chains โ€” these days. Plus, this food was decidedly better.

My family loves my homemade mashed potatoes. Here's how I get perfect results in less than 15 minutes.

3 February 2025 at 09:04
forkful of mashed potatoes
I make the best mashed potatoes in less than 15 minutes.

Steven John

  • I've developed the best recipe for mashed potatoes that takes less than 15 minutes to make.
  • My biggest tip is don't over-mash the potatoes โ€” a few chunks are fine.
  • The recipe is simple, but you can add herbs, spices, cheese, bacon, and other garnishes.

I've loved mashed potatoes since I was a kid, but it wasn't until well into adulthood that I realized how simple they are to make.

After years of practice in the kitchen, here's my quick and easy recipe for perfect mashed potatoes.

The ingredients couldn't be simpler.
ingredients for mashed potatoes on a counter
My mashed potatoes come together with six ingredients.

Steven John

My recipe uses just six ingredients, and two of those are water and salt.

The rest are russet potatoes (though other varieties work fine), butter, sour cream, and milk.

Peel and dice the potatoes, leaving some skin on if you want.

I like the texture the potato skin adds.

Steven John

I like a bit if the skins left on my potatoes, so after scrubbing the spuds, I stripe them with a food peeler.

Then, I chop them into cubes a bit smaller than an inch. Don't worry about perfect uniformity โ€” as long as none are significantly larger than the rest, they'll cook evenly enough.

Boil the potato chunks in salted water.

The potatoes cook faster when they're in smaller chunks.

Steven John

Bring just enough water to fully cover the potatoes to a boil, and go heavy with the salt to add some flavor. You could even boil them in broth to up the ante.

I made two medium-sized potatoes in a medium-sized pot, and 2 cups of water did the trick.

Cook the potatoes at a full boil just until you can easily break the chunks in half with a fork. That may happen in as little as six minutes and rarely takes more than seven.

You don't want to overcook the potatoes, so err on the side of caution.

Drain the potatoes, then add butter, sour cream, and milk.
hand spooning sour cream into a pot of potato chunks
The sour cream adds a nice tang.

Steven John

I like to lightly drain the potatoes with a strainer โ€” leaving a bit of that salty, starchy water in the pot is a good thing.

Next, toss in about 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 teaspoons of sour cream. The sour cream is optional, but I recommend it for the best flavor and texture.

For the milk, start with about ยฝ cup, but don't overdo it. You can always add more as needed if the potatoes aren't coming together well, but you can't take it back.

Then, it's time to mash.
hand mashing potatoes in a pot
I use a potato masher for the best results.

Steven John

Ideally, I like to use a dedicated food masher for my potatoes, but you can also use a large fork, a slotted spoon, or another similar tool.

Mash until there are no visible potato chunks left โ€” there may be a few bits and pieces here and there โ€” but don't overdo it.

The more you mash, the more starch is released from the potatoes, which can lead to a gummy, unpleasant consistency.

Serve the potatoes as is, or dress them up.

My family will eat the potatoes straight out of the pot.

Steven John

The potatoes are good as is, but you can also dress them up in dozens of ways.

Some of my family's classic additions include shredded cheddar cheese, green onions, bacon bits, pepper, and more butter.

However, the world is really your oyster here โ€” use up whatever you have in the fridge.

5 tricks I use to make perfect hard-boiled eggs every single time

20 January 2025 at 06:17
a hard-boiled eggs cut in half on a plate
I've found the best way to make perfect hard-boiled eggs.

Steven John

  • I've discovered some tips for cooking hard-boiled eggs with predictable (near-perfect) results.
  • I don't like to overdo it, so I boil my eggs for eight minutes.
  • I quickly shake the peels off hard-boiled eggs using a drinking glass and a bit of water.

Hard-boiled eggs may not be glamorous, but they are a quick, easy, and highly portable way to add protein to your diet.

The problem is that unlike frying or scrambling, the cooking happens while the egg is still in its shell, so it can be hard to know when its done.

However, when I follow these steps closely, I've figured out how to make a perfect hard-boiled egg every time.

Let the eggs come to room temperature before cooking them.
two eggs in a glass bowl
If the eggs are cold, it can throw off the cooking process.

Steven John

Get the eggs you intend to boil out of the fridge at least a half hour before you start cooking โ€” or even longer if your house is on the chilly side.

You want the eggs at room temperature or warmer before introducing them to the boiling water.

Sometimes, I'll rest them near the pot as it heats up to speed up the process a little.

Use tongs to slowly add the eggs to the pot.

The tongs help everything go smoothly.

Steven John

Once your eggs are at room temp and you have a pot of water at a full rolling boil, use tongs to gently lower each egg into the water.

This slow and steady introduction reduces the likelihood that the egg will crack due to the sudden heat change.

It's also a great way to prevent being splashed with boiling water.

The best cook time varies depending on how you want your yolks.

I like to leave my yolks a little soft.

Steven John

Some people cook hard-boiled eggs for too long, resulting in rubbery whites and a yolk that looks like yellow-gray clay.

Eight minutes leads to my perfect egg with fully set whites and a yolk that's just right of soft. If you prefer your yolks cooked to a full solid, just one more minute should do the trick.

Rapidly chill the cooked eggs in an ice bath.
two eggs in an ice bath
You want to cool the eggs down quickly using a bowl of ice water.

Steven John

As soon as the cooking time has elapsed, use your tongs to remove the eggs from the pot and into a large bowl filled with ice and water.

The eggs only need to chill in the ice bath for about three minutes before they're ready to peel.

Shake the eggs in a glass with a splash of water to quickly get rid of the shells.
hand holding the shell of an egg over a glass with a hard boiled egg
I can get the shell off a hard-boiled egg in essentially one piece.

Steven John

You can literally shake the shell off a hard-boiled egg. Yes, it sounds a bit strange, but it works so well.

Take an egg from the ice bath, place it in a standard short drinking glass (like a rocks glass), and add about a half inch of water. Then, cover the mouth of the glass with the palm of your hand and vigorously shake the egg back and forth for a few seconds.

The shell should peel away smoothly, often coming away in one large piece.

I tried tuna sandwiches from Subway, Jimmy John's, and Jersey Mike's, and there's only one I'd recommend

17 January 2025 at 06:57
three wrapped sub sandwiches from jimmy john's jersey mike's and subway
I ordered tuna sandwiches from Subway, Jimmy John's, and Jersey Mike's to find the best one.

Steven John

  • I tried classic tuna sandwiches at Subway, Jimmy John's, and Jersey Mike's to find the best one.
  • Subway and Jersey Mike's both had OK offerings, but there were problems with both.
  • Jimmy John's sandwich had a great balance of ingredients and spot-on taste and texture.

I think ordering a tuna sub is always going to be a bit of a risk. Will the fish taste fresh enough? Will the mayo be slapped on too heavily? Will the whole sandwich be a mess?

However, I've already found the best club sandwiches and best roast-beef subs to order, so in the name of research, I got tuna at Jimmy John's, Jersey Mike's, and Subway to see which popular chain comes out on top.

I made the sandwiches as similar as possible, starting with each chain's default bread stacked with a tuna blend, mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. Subway and Jimmy John's sandwiches also had cucumber slices, which weren't available at Jersey Mike's.

Once home, I unwrapped each sandwich, wrote down some first impressions, and got on with the comparison.

I started my taste test at Subway.

I'm a fan of Subway, even if it's basic.

Subway isn't everyone's first choice for a sandwich. However, it's a global chain with tens of thousands of locations, so I find myself there quite a bit โ€” especially when I'm traveling.

I ordered a 6-inch tuna sub for $6.49.

Subway tuna was in the press in 2021 when a lawsuit alleged that the product didn't contain any real tuna fish. It was later dismissed, and there's now a page on the Subway website dedicated to talking about its tuna.

Subway's tuna sandwich was inoffensive but unmemorable.

I couldn't find anything to complain about, but I also wasn't wowed.

Steven John

The best thing I can say about the tuna sandwich I got from Subway was that it wasn't bad.

I found the sandwich and its main ingredient inoffensive. Sadly, though, none of the flavors really stood out.

I liked the addition of cucumber, but even with those, there wasn't much contrasting texture to speak of, either.

The chain had more toppings and condiments available than the others, but I had to keep the playing field level. So, the six-ingredient sandwich I took home was a decent but hardly laudable concoction.

On the plus side, it was assembled with decent care and wasn't a mess to eat.

Jersey Mike's usually impresses me, so I had high hopes.

Jersey Mike's is a New Jersey-based sandwich chain that opened in the 1950s.

Since then, the shop has made a pretty big name for itself โ€” I can't be the only one inundated with its many commercials featuring Danny DeVito. Today, there are more than 2,000 locations across the US and Canada.

My regular (7-inch) No. 10 tuna sandwich cost $9.65

I was glad I was alone when eating this messy sub.

The tuna sandwich was good, but it had so much going on.

Steven John

Pro tip: Don't eat a tuna sandwich from Jersey Mike's on a first date. I mean, no tuna sandwiches from anywhere on early dates, but especially not this one.

If your Jersey Mike's tuna-sub experience is anything like mine, it's going to be an absolute mess. Given that this isn't the first time I got a massively overfilled sandwich at the chain, though, I'm afraid it's the norm.

You may get a lot of bang for your buck, but right from the moment I unwrapped the sandwich, bits of tuna and finely shredded lettuce fell from the sides. The sub was slippery and hard to keep together with each bite.

To be clear, it tasted great. I missed the crunch of the cucumber the other two had, but the fish's flavor profile was the best of the bunch here.

Unfortunately, it's hard to overlook the unpleasant eating experience.

Finally, I swung by Jimmy John's for a sub.
Jimmy John's 2
Jimmy John's is a little hit or miss for me.

Irene Jiang / Business Insider

Like Jersey Mike's, Jimmy John's is a North American sandwich chain with over 2,000 locations across the US and Canada.

It's known for its fresh-baked bread โ€” which I'm a huge fan of.

I ordered a No. 3 "totally tuna" sandwich for $9.49. Jimmy John's standard size is 8 inches, making it the longest sub of the bunch.

Jimmy John's tuna sandwich was tasty and tidy.
tuna sandwich from jimmy john's
Jimmy John's really impressed me here.

Steven John

If you've read any of my past sandwich reviews, you've heard me rave about the delicious French bread at Jimmy John's. I won't dwell on it again but just know that it's reliably excellent.

Now, on to the sandwich as a whole.

For one thing, it stayed together. In fact, it was so well-made that I could eat it with one hand without anything falling out.

The flavor of the fish was mild but pleasant, and the veggies were fresh and crisp. Overall, the sandwich had a great taste and texture.

None of the sandwiches were awful, but one tuna sub reigned supreme.
three tuna sandwiches from jimmy johns, jersey mike's and subway
Jimmy John's had the best tuna sandwich, in my opinion.

Steven John

I don't eat tuna sandwiches often enough to risk a negative experience, so the next time I crave one, I'll play it safe and return to Jimmy John's.

My sub there was pretty much perfectly made, and it had all the right flavors going on.

If the tasty sandwich from Jersey Mike's wasn't such a mess, it may have been my favorite. However, as it is, I doubt I'll order it again anytime soon.

Subway's offering wasn't necessarily bad, but the flavor just wasn't there. I wouldn't choose it over either of the other two.

I tried every soup at Panera. Some really impressed me, but there are 2 I'd never order again.

16 January 2025 at 06:28
six cups of soup from panera bread
I tried all the standard soups at Panera Bread and reviewed them.

Steven John

  • My local Panera Bread offers six different soups, and I tried each one to find the best and worst.
  • The homestyle chicken noodle was surprisingly flavorful and loaded with noodles, meat, and veggies.
  • However, both the rustic baked potato and bistro French onion let me down.

With over 2,000 locations in the US and Canada, Panera Bread is my go-to spot for a warm bowl of soup when I'm on the go. So, I tried all of its year-round options to find the best ones.

I skipped the seasonal menu items and the chili (that's like comparing apples to oranges, in my opinion).

With the chain's broccoli cheddar, creamy tomato, homestyle chicken noodle, cream of chicken and wild rice, bistro French onion, and rustic baked potato in front of me โ€” along with a few sides of bread and chips โ€” I got to tasting.

Here's what I thought of each soup.

The broccoli cheddar was rich, tasty, and comforting.
close-up shot of panera's broccoli cheddar soup
I started with Panera's broccoli-cheddar soup.

Steven John

I was unduly impressed with Panera's broccoli-cheddar soup.

It's an incredibly easy soup to screw up by adding too much salt, going overboard on the cheese, or messing up the consistency.

However, this version was rich but not overly thick, and it had a cheesy, creamy taste with just the right saltiness.

The vegetables were cooked to an ideal softness but weren't falling apart.

My only complaint is that I would've liked a little more broccoli, but I'd still definitely order this again โ€” especially when I need to warm up on a cold, rainy day.

I couldn't get behind the texture of Panera's rustic baked potato.
close-up shot of panera's rustic baked potato soup
The cheese didn't melt into the baked-potato soup, which wasn't ideal.

Steven John

I absolutely love a good baked-potato soup, and I tend to order it at restaurants when it's available. However, Panera's version didn't hold up for me.

The consistency felt far too thin and slightly over-blended, which meant an excess release of starch from the potato cells. This led to a gluey texture, as can happen with mashed potatoes that are whipped too much.

The soup also wasn't quite hot enough to melt the sprinkle of cheese on top, which didn't help.

All in all, I thought the baked-potato soup was a letdown.

The creamy tomato was thin but still tasty.
close-up shot of panera's creamy tomato soup
I'm used to cream-based soups being a little thicker.

Steven John

If you're a fan of tomato soup, I think you're safe to order Panera's creamy tomato โ€” ideally with extra croutons or chunks of bread to thicken it up some.

I found the texture to be a bit too thin for a cream-based soup, but the flavor was excellent. It had the slightest bit of spice to round out the herby undertones.

Although I think I would've preferred it served in one of Panera's bread bowls for a heartier meal, it was still one of my favorites. I'd order it again.

Panera's cream of chicken and wild rice didn't have a ton of flavor.
close-up shot of panera's cream of chicken and wild rice soup
The texture of the creamy chicken soup was great; it was just a bit bland.

Steven John

I enjoyed the cream of chicken and wild rice in the same way I might enjoy a piece of butter toast. It was good โ€” satisfying, even โ€” but there wasn't really anything special about it.

The consistency was good, and there were plenty of veggies and chunks of meat. However, the overall flavor was sort of bland โ€” an ambiguous salty creaminess.

A little more spice would really elevate this soup.

The bistro French onion was a flop for me.
close-up shot of panera's french onion soup
I really like French onion soup, but this wasn't a great one.

Steven John

French onion soup is another favorite of mine, but Panera's middling take on the classic disappointed me.

The broth tasted too sweet for my liking, and the onions were cut a bit too thick. I also think they could've been cooked down more.

Furthermore, Panera garnishes its soup with just a sprinkling of cheese and a side of croutons. A French onion soup without a layer of melty, cheese-slathered toast on top is like a football game with half the team missing.

This one is, unfortunately, a pass for me in the future.

Panera's homestyle chicken noodle was remarkably good.
close-up shot of panera's chicken noodle soup
There's nothing quite like a cup of chicken-noodle soup.

Steven John

The next time I have a cold, I'm ordering Panera's homestyle-chicken-noodle soup.

The broth was rich in flavor, with a satisfying but not overpowering saltiness and some umami notes. What really impressed me, though, was the volume of ingredients packed into the broth.

There were lots of noodles, chunks of meat, and pieces of sliced carrot and celery โ€” but I almost wished there was less since the broth was so good.

Even sans any ailments, I'd order a cup of this again.

Overall, there are a few soups I'd definitely come back for.
three cups of soup from panera bread
Broccoli cheddar and chicken noodle were easily my top picks, but I'd order creamy tomato again.

Steven John

The most humble of Panera's six soup offerings caught my attention the most. Every part of its chicken-noodle soup tasted good.

I'd also gladly order the broccoli cheddar and creamy tomato again. The cream of chicken and wild rice needs a little more oomph, but it's still a contender.

Even though (or perhaps because) they are usually some of my favorite varieties of soups, I wouldn't order the baked potato or French onion at Panera again. They just didn't live up to my expectations.

What happened to Hotmail? Microsoft's once-ubiquitous email platform still exists, but not in the form you remember

15 January 2025 at 01:02

Hotmail was once one of the most popular email platforms. You can still get a Hotmail address, but only through Microsoft Outlook.

  • Hotmail is a Microsoft-owned email platform that surged to popularity over two decades ago.
  • Microsoft ultimately folded Hotmail into its broader software suite known as Microsoft Outlook.
  • You can still create a Hotmail.com email address, but through Outlook.

A generation ago, AOL, Ask Jeeves, GeoCities, and Hotmail were all the rage. Surprisingly, of those 1990s vintage platforms, only AOL still exists in anything like its original form. Ask Jeeves is now Ask.com, and GeoCities is simply gone.

As for Hotmail, it's still around, but not in the same form as you remember it. Hotmail is now part of Microsoft Outlook, an email, calendar, contact, and scheduling software suite favored by many businesses. And while you can still get and use a Hotmail email address, don't bother trying to do so at Hotmail.com โ€” you'll just be redirected to Outlook, which was once part of Microsoft Office, now known as Microsoft 365.

When was Hotmail launched and what were its early days like?

A man in a dress shirt and tie sits in a darkened room in front of an old-fashioned PC displaying the Microsoft Windows logo.
Microsoft had gained massive success with its Windows operating system, and eventually bought the Hotmail email platform.

Neil Munns - PA Images/PA Images via Getty Images

Hotmail was first launched in the summer of 1996, and it was bought by Microsoft the following year, as the company coasted on the success of its massively popular Windows operating system. Microsoft ultimately rebranded Hotmail as MSN Hotmail, though that name was rarely used by the public.

Despite being one of the most popular email platforms of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hotmail was also plagued by problems.

In 1999, for example, it came out that any account could be logged into using the word "eh" as the password, prompting a hurried security fix. And then, two years later, hackers found an easy way to extract email from another user's account by creating a URL that included that account's email address.

Still, Hotmail remained popular throughout the first decade of the 21st century, though in the 2010s, Microsoft would merge Hotmail into its new program, Microsoft Outlook.

What happened to Hotmail?

In 2013, Microsoft rolled Hotmail into Outlook and sunset the original email service. But despite being officially discontinued, Hotmail did not in fact go away. You can still use your Hotmail email address and in fact you can log into Outlook with it. You can also log into Outlook with a Live or MSN email address, or of course with an Outlook email.

As of now, Outlook seems like it will not be going anywhere any time soon, so don't worry about yet another change coming. While not as venerable as, say, Microsoft Word, it is a core platform of the company.

Can you still get a Hotmail address?

Yes, you can still get a Hotmail email address, but you will have to access it through the Outlook platform. When signing up, you can choose a Hotmail.com address as your email domain.

How can I access my old Hotmail account?

To recover an old Hotmail account, go to Microsoft's account recovery page, then follow the prompts on screen, which will have you enter an old email account to be recovered as well as a current account to which to send the information.

Keep in mind that if your Hotmail account was totally inactive for more than two years it may have been permanently deleted.

Microsoft: A history of the software giant co-founded by Bill Gates, its products and services, jobs, layoffs, and more

14 January 2025 at 17:46
Microsoft's logo is seen in front of the company's headquarters in Washington state.

  • Microsoft is a software company known for products like Windows, Microsoft 365, and Xbox.
  • Microsoft is one of the largest software companies in the world by market cap.
  • Microsoft was co-founded by Bill Gates, and the company is now led by CEO Satya Nadella.

Microsoft is one of the world's largest software companies, with annual revenues nearing $250 billion in recent years. Among its many products and platforms are the programs Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, used by private citizens and corporations all over the world, and the Windows operating system, the most widely-used computer OS by a vast margin.

The company was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, with the latter leaving Microsoft in 1983 following a diagnosis of Hodgkin disease. Gates would stay on as CEO of the company until 2000, when he voluntarily stepped down, largely to focus on his charitable work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates was replaced by Steve Ballmer as the new Microsoft CEO, serving until he was in turn replaced by Satya Nadella in 2014. Under Nadella's guidance, the company has grown ever more profitable, though there have also been many massive layoffs across Microsoft.

Here's a look in greater detail at Microsoft's history, its many products and services, its financial successes and stumbles, and the foundation its profits helped create.

Microsoft's history

William Henry Gates III, better known as Bill Gates, had a preternatural talent with software, writing his first programs while a young teenager growing up in Seattle, Washington. By the time he graduated high school and went off to Harvard, Gates had already formed a business partnership with his friend and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

This was a data analysis venture called Traf-O-Data that employed computers in parsing through information collected by roadway traffic counters. Traf-O-Data was not a business success, but it was the precursor to the Microsoft Corporation, which Allen and Gates founded in the spring of 1975.

Initially based in Albuquerque, as Gates and Allen had been working for the New Mexico-based company Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems, the Microsoft headquarters moved to Bellevue, Washington, in early 1979, seeing its founders return to a location near their childhood turf.

The following year, 1980, was a pivotal one for Microsoft because the technology giant IBM awarded the company a contract that saw a Microsoft operating system used in the vaunted IBM Personal Computer, or PC. This was MS-DOS, the premier OS for several years, supplanted only by Windows, released in 1985, and one of the first graphic interface operating systems the world had ever seen.

Windows would become the dominant computer operating system over the next few decades, during which Microsoft also released software that would become wildly successful, such as the aforementioned Word and Excel, as well as PowerPoint.

A stack of boxes labeled "Microsoft Windows 95" is on display at a store.

Microsoft also developed its an email platform, known as Outlook, and even created a search engine named Bing, and so much more.

Microsoft's software

Microsoft released Microsoft Office โ€” today rebranded as Microsoft 365 โ€” in 1990, and soon the word processing and spreadsheet software therein included (namely Word and Excel) would become all but essential for office employees, students, writers, accountants, and myriad other people around the world.

But Microsoft hardly stopped with these more basic programs. The company would also develop OneDrive, a cloud data storage platform, Microsoft Azure, an advanced cloud computing service that lets you use powerful computers remotely, and Microsoft Copilot, the company's foray into the new and rapidly expanding world of artificial intelligence.

Many companies rely on Microsoft software, such as Teams, which helps people communicate, stay on schedule, and share files and documents, while many individuals rely on the advanced web browser Microsoft Edge to enhance the efficacy of their online searches.

Microsoft's software is so commonly used, and expertise in its programs have become so valuable, that the company even offers Microsoft certifications for IT specialists and developers who work with platforms like Microsoft 365 and Azure.

Beyond work and productivity software, services, and platforms, there is another arena in which Microsoft plays an outsized role: gaming.

Microsoft in the gaming world

Microsoft has been in the video game world since 1979, when "Microsoft Adventure" was released. It was a text-based problem-solving game with a feel not unlike a "Dungeons & Dragons" session.

Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, the company would churn out many video games, but few were mainstream successes save for the many versions of "Microsoft Flight Simulator," which was first released in 1982.

It wasn't until Microsoft got into the console gaming world that true gaming success arrived. Designed to compete with Sony's successful PlayStation video game console, the Xbox was first released in 2001 and would become one of the most popular gaming platforms on the planet.

Now in its fourth generation of console, the Xbox's most popular games include the franchises "Call of Duty," "Grand Theft Auto," and "Fortnite," to name but a few.

Microsoft has added to its success and reach in the gaming world beyond its own original creations as well; it has also acquired heavy hitters in the space. For example, in September of the year 2014, Microsoft bought Mojang, maker of the popular gaming property "Minecraft," for $2.5 billion.

And then, in October 2023, the software juggernaut bought the gaming giant Activision Blizzard for the staggering sum of $68.7 billion. These were not Microsoft's only acquisitions, of course.

Microsoft acquisitions over the years

While Microsoft had acquired many other brands, products, and companies before the year 1997, that year marked its first major and highly visible move of the kind when Microsoft bought the popular email platform Hotmail for a $500 million, which is nearly a billion dollars today.

Hotmail was eventually rolled into Microsoft Outlook, though you can still get and use a Hotmail email address today.

In 2011, Microsoft made another powerful move when it acquired the video chat platform Skype, this time in a multibillion-dollar move.

In 2016, the software company laid out a hefty $26.2 billion to buy LinkedIn, the widely used professional networking and social media platform.

And in 2018, Microsoft acquired GitHub, a code developing platform, for the tidy sum of $7.5 billion. All of these acquisitions involve huge numbers, of course, as does the wealth of Microsoft's founder and the endowment of the charitable organization he established with his then-wife, Melinda Gates.

Bill Gates and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation by the numbers

At last check, Bill Gates' net worth was around $106 billion, making him, the former richest person in the world, not even in the top 10 richest list. He ranked 14th richest, per Forbes, as of late 2024.

Gates has given tens of millions of dollars away, largely to his own nonprofit organization, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is focused on issues ranging from endemic diseases in developing nations to safe water supply issues and combatting hunger.

Married for 27 years prior to a divorce in the summer of 2021, Bill and Melinda Gates sat together on the board of their eponymous foundation for many years and even for three years following the marital split, though Melinda Gates finally departed the foundation in June 2024.

The foundation, which has offices in multiple countries across four continents, employs more than 2,000 people and has an endowment of more than $75 billion. According to data sourced from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation itself, in recent years it has offered charitable support between $7 and $8 billion, and the foundation had issued more than $77 billion in grant payments since its inception through the year 2023.

That's all an impressive amount of money, to be sure, and given for noble causes, but it pales in comparison to the profits of the Microsoft Corporation, profits that are often maintained thanks to harsh rounds of employee layoffs.

Microsoft finances, revenues, careers, and layoffs

Microsoft went public with its IPO in 1986 at a price of $21 per share. In the decades since, Microsoft stock pricing has swelled exponentially, and the company's total market cap โ€” which is the entire value of a company's outstanding shares โ€” reached an astonishing $3 trillion dollars by late 2024.

For a bit of perspective, that is larger than the annual gross domestic product of almost every nation on earth โ€” were Microsoft's market cap placed on the scale with GDP, it would rank between France and Germany.

For the 12-month period ending in June 2024, Microsoft earnings were around $245 billion โ€” in a one-year period, to be clear, the company generated nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars. It's no wonder, then, that Microsoft careers are highly sought after.

But jobs, though often lucrative, are also often tenuous. Microsoft's layoffs are often notorious for their size. For example, in the early fall of 2024, the company cut 650 workers from its gaming division only a few months after slashing 1,900 employees from its Activision Blizzard and Xbox departments.

In 2023, the company cut a huge swath of its labor force, dropping 10,000 workers. This was not the biggest layoff, though: between 2014 and 2015, the company axed nearly 20,000 employees. This was following the problematic acquisition of the telecom company Nokia, which also saw the exit of then-CEO Steve Ballmer.
