Prince Harry said he wants 'reconciliation' with the royal family. Here's a timeline of his and Meghan Markle's tumultuous relationship with the royals.

  • On Friday, Prince Harry told the BBC he wants "reconciliation" with his family.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship with the royal family has been strained for years.
  • Harry and Meghan Markle haven't been spotted publicly with the royals since 2022.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship with the royal family is basically nonexistent these days.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's issues with Harry's family date back years, and they reached a fever pitch after the couple stepped back as senior royals and started speaking publicly about their problems with the monarchy.

However, on Friday, Harry revealed in an interview with BBC News that King Charles isn't speaking to him — but Harry wants "reconciliation" with his family.

Here's a timeline of Harry and Meghan's relationship with the royal family.

Prince Harry appeared close to his brother growing up, though his relationship with his father was more complicated.

Prince Harry and Prince William appeared to be close in photos from their childhood.

And when Princess Diana died after a run-in with the paparazzi in August 1997, the brothers seemed to grow tighter than ever, sticking to each other's sides in the years following her death.

William said he and Harry were "uniquely bonded because of what we've been through" in a video released by Kensington Palace in 2017.

Their father, Charles, became their primary parent after their mother's death, but according to royal reporter Katie Nicholl's book "The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown," he was often too "busy" to spend time with his children.

"With a busy work schedule and Camilla now very much a priority in his private diary, Charles placed too much trust in William and Harry to look after themselves," Nicholl wrote of the king's approach to parenting his teenage sons, which led them to get into trouble.

Harry also appeared to be close to William and Kate Middleton when he was single.

Harry served as the best man in William and Kate Middleton's 2011 wedding. After the Waleses got married, the trio often attended royal events together, seeming to have a close relationship.

Harry once called Kate "the big sister I never had," according to Marie Claire.

The three also founded the mental-health initiative Heads Together in 2016.

A mutual friend brought Harry and Meghan together in 2016, and they became a couple almost immediately.

Prince Harry told James Corden that by his second date with Markle, he knew what they had was "pretty special."

"Dating with me, or with any member of the royal family, I guess, is kind of flipped upside down," he said. "All the dates become dinners or watching the TV or chatting at home. And then eventually, once you become a couple, you venture out to dinners, to the cinema, and everything else. So, everything was done back to front with us."

"There were no distractions, and that was great, that was an amazing thing. We went from 0 to 60 like in the first two months," he added.

On November 8, 2016, Harry confirmed his relationship with Meghan by speaking out against racist comments made about her.

Harry's royal communications secretary released a statement on his behalf.

The statement said Harry felt compelled to confirm his relationship because "his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment."

It went on to say Markle had been subjected to harassment in news articles, comments sections of articles, and in person as people tried to gain access to her home.

"Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her," the statement said. "It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game.' He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his."

Following the release of the statement, reports surfaced that William did not approve of Harry going public with his relationship. He then disputed those claims in a statement issued by Kensington Palace, according to The Telegraph.

"The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him," the statement said.

As the couple told the BBC, Harry proposed to Meghan at home while they were making dinner.

"[We were] trying to roast a chicken and it just — just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic," Meghan said of the proposal. "He got on one knee."

Kensington Palace and Clarence House announced the engagement via a statement.

William and Kate also released a statement about the couple's news, showing their support for the engagement: "We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together."

At the time, Harry and Meghan's wedding seemed to be a joyous, family affair.

Charles walked Meghan down the aisle; Prince William was Harry's best man; and Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis served as a bridesmaid and page boy, respectively.

However, there was controversy in the weeks leading up to the wedding because of Meghan's family.

Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, and half-sister, Samantha Markle, repeatedly spoke to tabloids about Meghan, and Thomas posed for staged paparazzi photos in exchange for money, according to the Daily Mail.

The Sussexes moved out of the property they shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton in November 2018 when Meghan was pregnant with her first child.

In the early months of their marriage, Meghan and Harry lived in Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace, where William and Kate lived with their children.

But shortly after Kensington Palace announced Meghan was pregnant, the Sussexes shared that they would be moving to Frogmore Cottage — 18 miles away from Kensington Palace on the grounds of Windsor Castle — on November 18, 2018.

At the time the move was announced, outlets including The Sun cited unnamed sources who said there was "tension" between the brothers.

In March 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex split their office with the Cambridges.

Until the spring of 2019, Harry and Meghan shared a royal office with William and Kate.

In March of that year, Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been appointed their own royal household.

Soon after the palace announced the couple would have their own household, The Times reported that Harry and Meghan originally requested "entire independence" from Buckingham Palace, which the Queen denied.

"They wanted their household to be entirely independent of Buckingham Palace, but were told 'no,'" an unnamed source told The Times at the time.

"There is an institutional structure that doesn't allow that kind of independence," the source went on to tell the outlet. "The feeling is that it's good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of Buckingham Palace, so they can't just go off and do their own thing."

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, 2019, and the Sussexes broke royal tradition with his birth.

Meghan and Harry welcomed Prince Archie on May 6, 2019. Unlike Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, Meghan did not pose for a photo with her newborn at the Lindo Wing at London's St. Mary's Hospital.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby," a statement from the palace said.

The duke and duchess posed for photos with Archie at Windsor Castle two days after she gave birth.

Harry also held Archie at the photo call, which broke royal tradition, as Diana and Kate both held their newborns when introducing their children to the world.

Although their offices had already been split, Meghan and Harry further separated themselves from William and Kate by resigning from The Royal Foundation, which Harry and William founded together in 2009.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the separation in a statement in June 2019, though The Sun's Emily Andrews first reported the news of the split in May 2019.

"Later this year, The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," the palace's statement said. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation."

"In addition, both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation's mental health programme, Heads Together," the statement added.

In October 2019, Meghan hinted in an interview that she was unhappy, and Harry seemed to confirm his rift with William.

In the ITV documentary "Harry and Meghan: An African Journey," about his and Meghan's tour of Africa, Harry said he and William were "on different paths at the moment," which appeared to confirm their rift.

"We don't see each other as much as we used to because we're so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of this stuff is created out of nothing, but as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days," he said.

In the same documentary, Meghan became emotional when interviewer Tom Bradby asked how media attention was affecting her mental and physical health, particularly after she gave birth to Archie.

"Look, any woman, especially when they're pregnant, you're really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging," she said. "And especially as a woman, it's really — it's a lot."

"Also, thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm OK," she said to Bradby. "But it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes."

Meghan and Harry announced they were stepping back as senior royals on January 8, 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping back from royal life in a statement on Instagram.

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," the statement said. "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

The BBC reported via X at the time that the royal family was not made aware of Meghan and Harry's decision before they posted the news to social media.

Meghan and Harry also announced on their website that they would no longer participate in the royal-rota system.

In response to the duke and duchess' announcement, the royal family said there were "complicated issues that will take time to work through" in a statement from the royal communications office obtained by Business Insider

On January 13, 2020, William and Harry released a joint statement addressing allegations that Harry and Meghan had been "bullied" out of the family.

The brothers released a statement to royal reporter Rebecca English in response to an article from the Times of London that said Harry and Meghan had been "bullied" out of the royal family.

"Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge," a statement from a spokesperson for the princes said. "For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful."

"It's clear from my conversations this morning that BOTH brothers are deeply, deeply unhappy about suggestions that Harry feels he has been 'bullied' out of the Royal Family by William," English added in an X post.

On January 18, 2020, Queen Elizabeth said she supported the Sussexes' "wish for a more independent life" in a statement.

"Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family," the statement said

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family," the Queen said. "I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life."

"I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family," the statement read. "It is my whole family's hope that today's agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life."

In addition to the Queen's personal statement, Buckingham Palace shared a statement clarifying that Harry and Meghan would be completely stepping back from their royal duties beginning in the spring of 2020. It also said they would no longer be receiving public funds, and they planned to pay back the Sovereign Grant for their Frogmore Cottage renovations.

The statement said Buckingham Palace would not comment on the details of the Sussexes' security arrangements. "There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security," it said.

Meghan and Harry attended a Commonwealth Day event alongside King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.

The Sussexes and Cambridges were near each other throughout the event, but they did not speak and barely made eye contact.

The pairs typically chatted at royal events, and Meghan and Kate even hugged at the 2019 Commonwealth Day ceremony.

Harry and Meghan moved to California shortly after the event, and they bought their first home in Montecito in July 2020.

At the time, Meghan was suing the Mail on Sunday over the misuse of private information, infringement of copyright, and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 after it published a letter she wrote to her father following her wedding in 2018.

In July 2020, Meghan's legal team filed a court document that said she felt "unprotected by the Institution."

"The Claimant had become the subject of a large number of false and damaging articles by the UK tabloid media, specifically by the Defendant, which caused tremendous emotional distress and damage to her mental health," a legal spokesperson for the duchess said in the document obtained by BI.

"As her friends had never seen her in this state before, they were rightly concerned for her welfare, specifically as she was pregnant, unprotected by the Institution, and prohibited from defending herself," they added.

Meghan also defended herself against criticism that she leaked the letter to People through an unnamed friend, saying the Kensington Palace communications team did not give her "the opportunity to participate" in the media response to People's story.

Harry and Meghan announced they were officially financially independent from the royal family on September 8, 2022, by paying back $3 million of taxpayer money they used to renovate Frogmore Cottage.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to BI that the couple paid back the renovation money after signing a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix.

"A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by the Duke of Sussex," the spokesperson said.

"This contribution as originally offered by Prince Harry has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen, and will remain the UK residence of the duke and his family," the statement went on to say.

The royal family denied Prince Harry's request to be represented at a remembrance service in November 2020.

According to The Telegraph and The Sunday Times, Prince Harry requested the royal family lay a wreath on his behalf at the Cenotaph for a Remembrance Sunday service on November 8, 2020.

Royal courtiers denied his request because "he is no longer representing the monarchy," according to the Times.

An Instagram post from the royal family showed that William, along with the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Kent, laid wreaths at the Cenotaph, and wreaths were laid for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip as they did not attend in person.

Reports surfaced that Buckingham Palace was investigating claims Meghan Markle bullied palace staff on March 3, 2021, days before her and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey was set to air on CBS.

Four days before the Sussexes' interview with Winfrey aired on CBS, Buckingham Palace announced it was investigating allegations that Meghan bullied two senior royal staff members, which was first reported by The Times of London.

"We are clearly very concerned about allegations in The Times following claims made by former staff of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex," the palace said in a statement obtained by BI on March 3, 2021.

"Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article," the statement said, referring to The Times of London report. "Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned."

"The Royal Household has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace," the palace went on to say.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex denied the allegations through a spokesperson in a statement to The Times and said it was "no coincidence" the palace announced it was investigating the allegations ahead of the couple's interview with Winfrey.

"Let's just call this what it is — a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation. We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of The Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet," the spokesperson said in a statement obtained by The Times.

"It's no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining The Duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and The Duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years," the spokesperson went on to say.

"The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma," the spokesperson went on to say. "She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."

Harry and Meghan's interview with Winfrey aired on March 7, 2021, and they made multiple bombshell allegations about the royal family.

During their tell-all interview with Winfrey, the duke and duchess opened up about their experience in the royal family.

In the interview, Harry and Meghan said members of the royal family made racist remarks about Archie's skin tone before he was born.

They also said the firm disregarded Meghan's mental health issues, with Meghan saying she had suicidal thoughts and that when she asked a senior member of the institution for help, the staffer told her she could not seek help because it would not look good for the monarchy.

Meghan also said that Kate made her cry during the week of her wedding over a disagreement about Princess Charlotte's flower girl dress, disputing reports that Meghan made Kate cry.

In addition, Prince Harry said his father stopped taking his phone calls before he and Meghan stepped back, and he and Meghan shared that the king cut the couple off financially following their step back.

Prince Harry clarified that his grandparents didn't make racist comments about his son a day after the interview.

Following the interview, Oprah Winfrey shared with CBS' Gayle King that Prince Harry told her his grandparents, the Queen and Prince Philip, didn't comment on Archie's skin tone ahead of his birth.

Winfrey told King that Harry wanted to ensure that it was known "that it was not his grandma nor his grandfather that were a part of those conversations."

Buckingham Palace issued a statement about the interview two days after it aired.

"The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," the statement from Buckingham Palace said.

"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning," it went on to say. "While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately."

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members," the statement added.

Prince William said the royal family was "very much not a racist family" on March 11, 2021.

Prince William and Kate Middleton made an appearance at an elementary school for a mental health initiative on March 11, 2021.

During the appearance, Sky News North of England correspondent Inzamam Rashid asked William if he had spoken to Prince Harry since the interview.

"No, I haven't yet, but I will do," he responded.

"And can you just let me know, is the royal family a racist family, sir?" Rashid responded.

"We're very much not a racist family," William said as he and Kate left the event.

Prince Harry and Prince William spoke briefly at Prince Philip's funeral on April 17, 2021, but William and Kate reportedly feared conversations with Harry would leak to the press.

Harry reunited with his family after Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021.

He attended the funeral at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on April 17, 2021, though he and William did not walk next to each other during the processional. Instead, their cousin, Peter Philips, walked between them.

Harry was also spotted briefly walking and speaking with William and Kate after the ceremony, but according to royal historian Robert Lacey's book "Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult," the couple didn't speak to Harry after the funeral because they feared the conversation would be "leaked."

Lacey wrote that William and Kate saw "no point in talking to Harry, since any discussion of substance would go straight back to Meghan to be leaked out via Oprah or some other tentacle of the Sussex network that had not stopped spreading stories in the weeks since the interview that the couple's friends had promised would be their final word."

According to royal biographer Katie Nicholl's book, "The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown," William and Kate also didn't attend an impromptu wake with Harry, Prince Philip, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, and Zara and Mike Tindall.

Prince Harry revealed new details about his and his wife's mental health struggles when they were senior royals when "The Me You Can't See" premiered on May 21, 2021.

In the third episode of the Apple TV+ series, Harry spoke candidly about his relationship with his father, revealing that King Charles often told him and Prince William when they were children, "Well, it was like that for me, so it's going to be like that for you."

"That doesn't make sense," Harry said of his father's refrain. "Just because you suffered doesn't mean your kids have to suffer."

"In fact, quite the opposite," he went on to say. "If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, that you can make it right for your kids."

And in episode five, Harry shared that he woke up to Meghan crying before their interview with Winfrey aired because of a "smear campaign" from British tabloids and the firm, the institution that supports the monarchy.

"Before the interview, because of their headlines and that combined effort of the firm and the media to smear her, I was woken up in the middle of the night to her crying in her pillow because she doesn't want to wake me up because I'm already carrying too much," Harry said of Meghan.

"That's heartbreaking," he added. "I held her. We talked. She cried, and she cried, and she cried."

Meghan and Harry welcomed their daughter in June 2021, who was named Lilibet Diana after her grandmother and great-grandmother; Lilibet was Queen Elizabeth's family nickname.

Members of the royal family offered their congratulations to the family online.

"Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana!" the royal family wrote on its official Instagram on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, her son, Camilla, and William and Kate.

Charles and Camilla, as well as William and Kate, also congratulated the Sussexes in their own Instagram post, in which they didn't use Meghan and Harry's royal titles.

"We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, and Archie," William and Kate said in an Instagram post

"Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, and Archie on the arrival of baby Lilibet Diana," Charles and Camilla said in their post. "Wishing them all well at this time."

Prince Edward said Meghan and Harry's rift with the royals had been "difficult" for the family on June 10, 2021.

During an interview with CNN, King Charles' youngest brother answered a question about Harry and Meghan's rift with the royal family.

"It's very sad," Prince Edward said of the situation. "Weirdly, we've all been there before, we've all had excessive intrusion and attention in our lives, and we've all dealt with it in slightly different ways."

"We wish them the very best of luck, it's a really hard decision," he went on to say. "Fantastic news about the baby, that's great, I hope they'll be very happy. Families are families, aren't they?"

When a reporter asked him if the rift had been difficult for Queen Elizabeth, Edward said, "It's difficult for everyone. But that's families for you."

In honor of what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, William and Harry came together at Kensington Palace for the unveiling of a statue made in their mother's honor.

The brothers released a rare joint statement for the occasion.

"Today, on what would have been our mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength, and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," the brothers said in their statement. "Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."

Harry and William attended the event without any members of the royal family, including their wives, though they were joined by Diana's siblings, Charles Spencer, Sarah McCorquodale, and Jane Fellowes.

Ahead of the unveiling, Stewart Pearce, Diana's voice coach, told BI that William and Harry are bonded together by their grief for their mother.

"What the British press are not seeing is that these two young men are held in an extraordinary pact of grief," Pearce said.

A spokesperson for Charles said he did not speculate on Archie's skin color in November 2021.

In November 2021, Christopher Andersen published "Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan."

In the book, Andersen wrote that a well-placed palace source told him that it was Harry's father who speculated on Archie's skin tone.

According to the source, on Meghan and Harry's wedding day, Charles asked Camilla, "I wonder what the children will look like?"

Camilla was "somewhat taken aback" by the question and responded that they would be, "Well, absolutely gorgeous, I'm certain," the source told Andersen.

"I mean, what do you think their children's complexion might be?" Charles responded, according to the unnamed source who spoke to Andersen.

When Page Six reported on the claim, a representative for Charles said: "This is fiction and not worth further comment."

The palace also consulted lawyers about the allegation, royal writer Omid Scobie wrote on X at the time.

In December 2021, The Sun reported that Harry and Charles' relationship was at an "all-time low."

On December 7, 2021, Matt Wilkinson reported for The Sun that sources told him Charles was "deeply shocked and hurt" by Meghan and Harry's step back and the events following.

Wilkinson's sources were also cited saying that Charles and his son had "barely spoken" in eight months.

However, Charles said he was proud of Harry in January 2022.

In a personal essay about the climate crisis published by Newsweek on January 4, 2022, Charles honored William and Harry's conservation efforts.

"As a father, I am proud that my sons have recognized this threat," the king wrote. "And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net zero."

Nigel Cawthorne, the royal biographer who wrote "Prince Philip: I Know I Am Rude," told Business Insider that Charles' comments about Harry indicated he was working toward a resolution.

"Prince Charles is clearly realizing that he has to take on the conciliatory role of the grown-up that Prince Philip used to have," Cawthorne told BI at the time.

"Like his father, he is realizing that letting emotions fester will be the downfall of the Windsors. Prince Philip used what the Queen called his 'cheeky humor' to unruffle feathers, even with Harry and William's mother, Diana," Cawthorne went on to say. "Charles will have to find his own way in keeping the family together rather than let it grow apart over quibbles."

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed to BI that Harry and Meghan paid a visit to the Queen while they were in Europe for the Invictus Games, a competition for injured service personnel founded by Harry.

Katie Nicholl's "New Royals" revealed that the Duke of Sussex also saw Charles and Camilla during the visit.

"Harry went in with hugs and the best of intentions and said he wanted to clear the air," a friend of the royal family told Nicholl of the prince's approach to his meeting with his father and stepmother.

"He actually suggested that they use a mediator to try and sort things out, which had Charles somewhat bemused and Camilla spluttering into her tea," the friend went on to tell Nicholl.

"She told Harry it was ridiculous and that they were a family and would sort it out between themselves," the same friend said, according to Nicholl.

After the visit, Harry said he wanted to make sure the Queen was "protected" and avoided a question about his brother.

On April 20, Harry discussed his visit with his grandmother during an interview with NBC for the "Today" show.

"Being with her, it was great, it was just so nice to see her," Harry said of the Queen. "She's on great form. She's always got a great sense of humor with me, and I'm just making sure that she's, you know, protected, and got the right people around her."

"We have a really special relationship, we talk about things she can't talk about with anyone else," he added.

In the same interview, Hoda Kotb asked Harry if he missed his father and brother since moving to the US, and Harry seemed to avoid the question by talking about the Invictus Games.

"For me, in the moment, I'm here, focused on these guys and these families and giving everything that I can — 120% — to them to make sure they have the experience of a lifetime," Harry responded.

In June 2022, the Sussexes attended the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, reuniting them with the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex flew to the UK with their children for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

On June 3, 2022, they made their first joint appearance at a royal event since 2020 for the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral in honor of the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

Although they attended the service, they didn't attend a luncheon for the royals after the event, and they appeared to be booed by some as they exited the ceremony, according to a video published by the New York Post.

Charles and Camilla were able to meet Princess Lilibet during the trip, and a source told People that Charles had an "emotional" reaction to meeting his granddaughter.

"It was a fantastic visit," an unnamed royal source told People's Simon Perry. "The prince was delighted to see his grandson and meet his granddaughter for the first time."

"The Prince and the Duchess [of Cornwall] were absolutely thrilled to see them," the source went on to tell People.

Queen Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, at 96. Buckingham Palace said she "died peacefully at Balmoral" in Scotland in a statement.

Members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral after the Queen's doctors said they were concerned about her. That included Harry, as he and Meghan were in London at the time for a charity event.

But Harry did not see the Queen before she died. The palace announced she died earlier that afternoon at 6:30 p.m. local time, and Harry's flight did not arrive in Scotland until 6:46 p.m., according to flight-tracking data published by The Daily Beast and Mail Online.

The Duke of Sussex was reunited with the new King Charles, Prince William, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, at Balmoral.

Meghan and Harry stayed in the UK for the Queen's funeral events.

King Charles voiced his love for Meghan and Harry in his first address as monarch on September 9, 2022.

King Charles gave his first address to the UK as monarch the day after his mother's death.

In the speech, he paid tribute to his mother, bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on William and Kate, and expressed his love for Harry and Meghan.

"I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," Charles said after announcing William was taking over his title.

Harry and Meghan made a surprise appearance with Kate and William on September 10, 2022, their first as the "fab four" in over two years.

On September 10, Meghan and Harry joined William and Kate for an impromptu walkabout at Windsor Castle to greet well-wishers.

A spokesperson for the new Prince of Wales told The Times of London that William personally invited Harry and Meghan to join the walk, which marked their first joint appearance as couples in years.

"The Prince of Wales thought it was an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family," the spokesperson told The Times.

But royal expert Marlene Koenig told BI the moment of unity likely wasn't a sign of a permanently mended relationship.

"I don't think there's been a reconciliation," Koenig said. "I'm sure it was insanely uncomfortable for all of them."

Meghan and Harry were later spotted with King Charles at Buckingham Palace.

King Charles granted Harry an exception to wear his military regalia to stand vigil for his grandmother on September 16, 2022.

In the days after the Queen's death, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex told BI that Prince Harry would wear a morning suit to all funeral services for his grandmother, not military attire, since he is no longer a working royal.

"Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother," the spokesperson said at the time. "His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears, and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

On September 12, The Telegraph reported that only working members of the royal family would be permitted to wear military attire to the Queen's funeral events. However, an exception had been made for Prince Andrew, who would get to wear military dress at a final vigil held at Westminster Hall despite being stripped of his military titles earlier that year.

But on September 16, ahead of a vigil at Westminster Hall attended by Queen Elizabeth's eight grandchildren, royal reporter Rebecca English tweeted that both William and Harry would wear their military attire to the service "at the King's request."

The stunning reversal seemed like an indication that the royal family was making amends in the wake of the Queen's death.

But Harry's uniform was missing his grandmother's initials.

Roya Nikkah reported for The Sunday Times on September 18, 2022, that Harry's uniform was missing an "ER" pin, Queen Elizabeth's initials, when it was returned to him.

The missing pin meant that Harry was initially not meant to wear his uniform for the ceremony, despite serving over 10 years in the British military.

An unnamed friend of Harry told Nikkah that the prince was "heartbroken" that the pin was left off the uniform, and he considered not wearing it at all out of "humiliation" since the absence of the pin seemed "intentional."

On October 27, 2022, Penguin Random House announced Prince Harry's memoir would be called "Spare."

Penguin Random House

Penguin Random House announced "Spare" would be released on January 10, 2023, though it was originally set to be released in 2022.

The title appeared to refer to Harry's former position in his family as the spare heir to the throne as William's younger brother. People often called the siblings "the heir and the spare" as children, according to Vanity Fair.

The synopsis of the book on the Penguin Random House website indicated that the prince would get candid about his relationship with his family.

"It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror," the synopsis said. "As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last."

"With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief," it went on to say.

When "Harry & Meghan" premiered on Netflix on December 8, 2022, the streaming company and unnamed royal sources disagreed about its production.

Netflix

The Netflix docuseries premiered in two volumes, with three episodes dropping on December 8 and three dropping on December 15.

At the beginning of episode one, two screen cards appeared on the screen with disclaimers about the production.

"This is a first-hand account of Harry & Meghan's story, told with never before seen personal archive," the first card read. "All interviews were completed by August 2022," before Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022.

A second disclaimer then appeared: "Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series." The disclaimer did not note which members of the royal family were contacted ahead of the show's release.

But after the premiere, multiple outlets, such as PeopleThe Independent, and Page Six, reported that unnamed sources said Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace were not asked for comment on the contents of the series. The palaces did not respond to a request for comment from BI on the matter.

An anonymous royal source said to People that the two palaces' offices got an email from an unnamed third-party production company, but "the substance of the email did not address the entire series." The source went on to tell People that the palaces then contacted Archewell and Netflix about the email, and they got no response to their inquiry.

But a Netflix source told BI that Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace were contacted specifically about the show and were given the opportunity to comment on its content.

In the series, Harry said the royal family didn't think his relationship with Meghan would last because of her career.

In episode two of the series, Harry and Meghan discussed the royal family's first impression of her.

"I remember my family first meeting her and being incredibly impressed," Harry said. "Some of them didn't quite know what to do with themselves."

Despite being "impressed," Harry went on to say that his family didn't initially think he would end up marrying Meghan because of her career; Meghan was an actor on "Suits" when she met Harry.

"The fact that I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else in the beginning," the prince said.

"Oh, she's an American actress; this won't last," he said of his family's thoughts.

"The actress thing was the biggest problem, funny enough," Meghan echoed her husband in a different interview during the docuseries. "There was a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint. Hollywood, it was just very easy for them to typecast that."

In the series, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also revealed they had been trying to move away from the UK since 2018.

Harry and Meghan moved away from the UK in March 2020 after stepping back as senior royals.

But as they shared in episode five of "Harry & Meghan," they considered moving to three Commonwealth countries to continue working for the Queen outside the UK.

Harry and Meghan said they presented the royal family with a plan for them to move to New Zealand in 2018; South Africa in the spring of 2019; and, finally, Canada at the end of 2019.

"The family and their people knew that we were trying to find a different way of working for a minimum of two years," Harry said.

Harry went on to say their plan to move to South Africa was approved by the Queen's office, Charles' office, and Prince William's office, and each office signed off on an "internal document" regarding the move.

But the document was leaked to The Times in April 2019, Harry said, so the move was canceled.

"Then that whole plan was then scrapped because it's now become a public debate," Harry said. "Once plans like that become public debates, nine times out of 10, it's gonna fail."

The plan to move to Canada was also leaked in January 2020, which frustrated Harry in particular because he asked his father if he could avoid putting the plan in writing. But Charles said he couldn't make the move happen if it wasn't written down.

Harry sent his father details about the move on January 1, 2, and 3, 2020, and The Sun published a story about it by January 7.

Harry also said he had nothing to do with a joint statement released by the palace with his and William's names on it after he and Meghan stepped back as senior royals.

In episode five, Harry addressed the "joint" statement a Kensington Palace representative gave Rebecca English about allegations that William had bullied the Sussexes out of the royal family.

Harry said no one asked his permission to add his name to the statement, and he was shocked when he heard about it.

"I couldn't believe it," he said.

He said he called Meghan to tell her about the statement after he heard about it.

"She burst into floods of tears," the prince said of Meghan's reaction. "Within four hours, they were happy to lie to protect my brother, and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

In the Netflix series, Harry said William yelled at him during the Sandringham Summit in January 2020.

After Harry and Meghan announced their step back on social media, senior members of the royal family gathered at Sandringham House in January 2020 to discuss what Meghan and Harry's futures as members of the royal family would be.

In episode five of "Harry & Meghan," Harry said the conversations were not productive, particularly because of William's reaction.

"It became very clear very quickly that that goal was not up for discussion or debate," Harry said. "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me."

"I mean the saddest part of it was this wedge created between myself and my brother so that he's now on the institution's side," he went on to say. "And part of that, I get. I understand, right? That's his inheritance."

"So, to some extent, it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution," he added.

King Charles III's coronation took place at Westminster Abbey, and both Harry and Meghan were invited.

However, Harry came on behalf of the Sussexes, while Meghan stayed with their children in California, which royal experts told BI was a "brilliant" PR strategy.

The Duke of Sussex was only in London for 28 hours, and although he was not seen interacting with the king or Prince William, he chatted with his cousins and aunt, Princess Anne.

Buckingham Palace said it wouldn't be commenting after Harry and Meghan's representative said they were involved in a paparazzi car chase on May 16, 2023.

After attending an event in Manhattan on May 16, Harry, Meghan, and her mother Doria Ragland were "chased" by paparazzi for over two hours, a representative for the Sussexes said in a statement shared by royals reporter Omid Scobie at the time.

"This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers," the statement said.

After the alleged incident, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter when contacted by BI.

"This isn't something we're commenting on," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told BI.

The royal family released the Sovereign Grant report on June 28. During a briefing about the report the following day, the keeper of the privy purse, Sir Michael Stevens, confirmed Harry and Meghan vacated the cottage, as the Independent reported.

"We will not be going into any detail on those arrangements here," Stevens said. "Safe to say that, as has previously been stated, the duke and duchess have paid for the expenditure incurred by the Sovereign Grant in relation to the renovation of Frogmore Cottage, thus leaving the Crown with a greatly enhanced asset."

The Diana Award recipients were announced on June 30, 2023. According to a press release reviewed by BI, the awards honor 180 young people for their humanitarian efforts and social work. The list is announced on June 30 to honor the late princess' birthday, which is July 1.

Diana's sons play an active role in the organization, and for the 2023 awards ceremony, both William and Harry filmed videos congratulating the recipients.

Their videos were filmed separately, but the brothers offered similar sentiments in their messages.

King Charles announced he had been diagnosed with cancer on February 5, 2024.

The following day, Harry visited the king for 45 minutes at Clarence House, seemingly the first time they had seen each other since Charles' coronation in May 2023.

"The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I'm grateful for that," Harry told Good Morning America of the visit on February 16.

Harry also told GMA that the king told him about his cancer directly.

On May 2, Harry lost his legal challenge requesting automatic security for his family when they visit the UK.

In a statement shared with BI, Harry said "this legal action has been a last resort, but one that has uncovered shocking truths," pointing to the role the Royal Household plays in decisions made by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC). He also said he, Meghan, and their children continue to be the subject of "neo-Nazi and extremist threats," putting them in danger without ample security.

"The UK is my birthplace and will always be part of who I am," he said. "It is a place I love, and the country where my son was born. I've only ever wanted to continue my charitable work in supporting the causes and people that mean so much to me, and for my children to know the beauty of my homeland."

Harry also discussed the ruling and how his security issues have affected his relationship with the royals in an interview with BBC News, saying he "can't see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point."

He also discussed his rift with his family with BBC News, saying he "would love a reconciliation" with them but that his battle for security in the UK is "the sticking point" in their relationship.

"Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. They will never forgive me for lots of things," he said, adding that King Charles isn't speaking to him "because of this security stuff."

"Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has," he said.

Meghan Markle says she writes Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet emails almost every night to create virtual scrapbooks of their childhoods

  • Meghan Markle appeared on the "The Jamie Kern Lima Show" podcast to discuss her work and family.
  • The Duchess of Sussex said she wants Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know how loved they are.
  • She has been emailing them every night to create a virtual scrapbook to give to them someday.

Meghan Markle offered a sneak peek into how she's making childhood memories last for her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

On Monday, the Duchess of Sussex appeared on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," hosted by the founder of IT Cosmetics.

During the episode, Meghan opened up about how she approaches parenting her and Prince Harry's children, Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3, telling Lima, one of her longtime friends, a favorite way to document her kids' lives.

A virtual scrapbook for Archie and Lili

Meghan and Lima chatted about their children throughout the episode, with Meghan wearing a sweatshirt with Archie and Lili's names embroidered on it.

Lima eventually asked Meghan what she hopes Lili will say about her mother when she grows up. Meghan said she hopes both of her children feel how much she loves them.

"I know that they'll feel like, 'Oh my gosh, no one has ever loved someone more than the way our mom loved us,'" Meghan said at the 58-minute mark. "And I put that in practice. That's part of every day, how I show up for them."

"I read a lot of parenting books," the duchess added. "I really want to be good at it. I think a lot of stuff comes naturally, and a lot of stuff you can also just, we can all use tools."

Meghan also said that she has been writing emails to Archie and Lili almost every night to help ensure they feel her love as they grow older. She explained that she took inspiration from a friend who was doing the same for her children.

Meghan described the emails' content as "the things you're not going to frame, the things you're not going to put pen to paper in a journal," but that offer a record of her kids' childhoods.

"It doesn't have to be a heavy lift, and you can email them like, 'Here's your report card from today,' or 'Oh my gosh, you said the funniest thing this morning' or 'Here's a picture of you two having breakfast,'" she continued.

"I thought it was such a great time capsule to create for them because I still have scrapbooks and photo albums, but we're past that generation now," she said.

Meghan said she planned to give the email accounts to Archie and Lili when they near adulthood.

"They will end up at one point in their life, maybe when they're 16 or when they're 18, that I say, here's an email that I've been keeping for you for your whole life," Meghan said. "And here's everything and every moment that I wanted to tell you how much I love you and like how proud I am of you."

Partners in parenting

Meghan and Harry are raising their children in California, keeping them away from public events since they stepped back as senior royals. Meghan occasionally offers glimpses of her kids on her Instagram, but their faces aren't visible in her shots.

Meghan also spoke about her relationship with Harry on "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," saying, "That man loves me so much" at the 54-minute mark.

"We've built a beautiful life, and we have two healthy, beautiful children," she said. "I always think about it like the end of 'Super Mario Brothers' when you get to the final, final level. And what's the goal in 'Super Mario?' They're like, 'slay the dragon, save the princess.' I'm like, 'That's my husband.'"

"He's just going to do whatever he can to make sure that our family is safe and protected and we're uplifted and still make time for date nights," she said.

Meghan and Harry met in 2016 and tied the knot in 2018. They stepped back as senior royals in 2020 and have lived in Montecito, California, ever since.

Meghan said on the podcast that she and Harry are in more of a honeymoon phase than ever, describing Harry as "a fox."

"My husband's very, very handsome, but his heart is even more beautiful," she said.

  • The British royal family is known for using their portraits to mark special occasions.
  • Royal family members are often photographed but cannot take selfies with the public.
  • Here are 25 royal family portraits from the 1930s to now.

Members of the British royal family surely have many talents, but if there's one skill they've mastered, it's posing for pictures.

Wherever they go, professional photographers and enthusiastic fans with iPhones alike clamor to snap a photo of their every move (though royals aren't allowed to take selfies with members of the public).

From official portraits in Buckingham Palace to informal photocalls while they're on vacation, here are 25 portraits of the royal family from the 1930s until now.

  • On Wednesday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle unveiled an installation in New York City.
  • The installation highlighted the dangers of social media for children.
  • Harry said at the event that he and Meghan are glad their kids are still too young for social media.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are already considering how social media could impact their children.

On Wednesday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the Archewell Foundation Parents' Network revealed The Lost Screen Memorial in New York City.

Part of the foundation's "No Child Lost to Social Media" campaign, the installation consisted of 50 art pieces designed to look like large cellphones. Each featured a lockscreen photo of a child who died due to social media-related harms.

As part of the unveiling, Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, attended a private vigil with the parents of the children depicted in the display.

During the event, which Business Insider attended, the Duke and Duchess also shared their thoughts on the dangers of social media — and how it might impact their children.

Helping parents feel less alone

The Archewell Foundation officially formed The Parents' Network in August 2024 after first testing it in 2023. Today, the network supports parents who lost children due to social media-related harms, offering them resources and a place to connect with families with similar experiences.

The Lost Screen Memorial is a culmination of that work, both in that it created a physical representation of those who died and because it brought many members of the network together in person for the first time. The installation will only be up in New York for 24 hours, though it is also available to view online.

Amy Neville, whose son Alexander Neville died in 2020 of a fentanyl overdose, described The Parents' Network as "an amazing home" for parents like her at the vigil.

"When this type of thing happens in your life, you feel like you're alone. You feel like you're an enigma," Neville said at the event. "We can come into this space and be around these families and just feel normal."

"It's been a place for us to be able to recharge," Todd Minor said of The Parents' Network's role in his and his wife Mia's life after their son Matthew died.

"We've been advocating, and year after year trying to get bills passed at the state and federal level," he said. "We're able to go to The Parents' Network to recharge and just share. It's just an additional family to us."

Harry and Meghan have been active in The Parents' Network since its inception, and they greeted many of the families at the vigil on Wednesday as old friends.

Several parents who attended told BI that it was gratifying how knowledgeable the couple is about the dangers of social media.

"It's nice to know that somebody who has maybe some influence is actually paying attention and is going out there," Neville said of the duke and duchess.

Researchers are still studying how social media harms youth and how to address it. In June 2024, the surgeon general proposed putting government warning labels on the platforms.

The Sussexes have struggled with social media

Harry and Meghan have seen the darker sides of social media firsthand, becoming the targets of coordinated harassment during their time as senior royals. Harry has also said that online bullying and the amplification of harassment from UK tabloids contributed to his and Meghan's decision to step back from the monarchy in 2020.

They stopped using their joint Instagram account the same year and have been largely absent from social media since then.

"Life is better off of social media," Harry said while speaking to BI and other outlets on Wednesday. He added that he and Meghan are glad their children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, haven't aged into social media yet.

"We're just grateful that our kids are too young to be on social media," he said.

Prince Harry speaks to a group of people on a rooftop.

Emil Cohen for The Archewell Foundation

However, the prince also said he realizes that, given our digital world, that likely won't always be the case.

"The easiest thing to say is to keep your kids away from social media," he said. "The sad reality is that the kids that aren't on social media normally get bullied at school because they can't be part of the same conversations as everybody else."

Harry said he hopes social-media companies will do more to make their platforms safe for children.

"While social-media companies claim to be taking action, most still withhold critical data from grieving parents — data that could provide answers and accountability," Harry said. "This is a growing crisis. Social media is quietly taking our children, and those with the power to make change are failing to act."

Meghan, who also spoke at the Time100 Summit on Wednesday, returned to Instagram in January before launching her company, As Ever, and her Netflix show, "With Love, Meghan." She made her first post on New Year's Day, sharing a video of herself running on the beach.

The duchess has mostly posted about her business endeavors on her new page and doesn't allow comments on her posts, limiting trolls' access to her content.

Meghan shares small snippets of her personal life, including photos with Harry and videos of her cooking at home with her kids. However, she keeps Archie and Lilibet's faces off her page, highlighting her and Harry's focus on their children's privacy.

"I think for those who do choose to be online and to be in social media as adults that we get to set the example and really put as much good and joy into the world as we can," Meghan said on Wednesday.

I spent a weekend living like Meghan Markle. It taught me more than just cooking and hosting tricks.

19 April 2025 at 02:01

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

  • I spent a weekend living like Meghan Markle, trying dishes and following hosting tips from her Netflix show.
  • I made floral ice cubes, chilled eucalyptus towels, and whipped up her spring garden pasta salad.
  • My weekend as Meghan taught me more than just some hosting tricks.

As I vigorously rubbed hair serum into my scalp, rapidly counting the 60 seconds before I could flop into bed, a voice popped into my head.

"The only difference between ritual and routine is intention."

This wasn't a quote from a self-help Instagram infographic, nor a wise lesson from Chelsea, Aimee Lou Wood's lovable zodiac queen on the most recent season of "The White Lotus." No, this was something I had heard on Meghan Markle's new Netflix show.

Having just binged every episode of "With Love, Meghan" to prepare for my review of her As Ever products, it made sense that her voice was in my head. But my fingers still relaxed, turning the moment into a head massage instead.

That's when I wondered if there was more to learn from Meghan's new show than the critics were willing to give her credit for. So, I spent the weekend living like the Duchess of Sussex, making a long to-do list of recipes and hosting projects.

It was quite the trip.

Meghan Markle shared a bevy of tips in her new Netflix series, "With Love, Meghan."

Meghan's show seems to be inspired by Martha Stewart and Ina Garten. It shows her making frittatas, popping bottles of chilled Champagne, and hosting a rotating guest list of friends in her ultra-luxurious Montecito neighborhood.

It was a new venture for the duchess, but the critics weren't impressed. They seemed to be in competition for who could come up with the harshest headline, calling it "toe-curlingly unlovable TV" and a "Montecito ego trip not worth taking."

Some thought Meghan was unrelatable, while others said she was too amateur. It all seemed pretty harsh for a series about making ladybug crostinis and jam.

I wouldn't know until I put the projects to the test — let the weekend begin.

My Saturday morning began with some avocado toast and, of course, flower sprinkles.
Meghan Markle avocado toast

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

I jolted awake before 7 a.m., as if my body knew it was about to spend 48 hours cosplaying as a Montecito princess. Unfortunately, that same body stayed up until 1 a.m. to watch Lady Gaga perform on the Coachella livestream the night before and was definitely feeling it.

Thankfully, Meghan believes in starting the day with carbs, so I made some avocado toast, just like I had seen her do on the show.

The recipe was simple enough. I spread avocado on my toasted slice of sourdough bread, sprinkled some salt, then topped it with a very un-Instagram-worthy fried egg.

I briefly considered making another one for a prettier picture, but there's no way I'm wasting eggs in this economy. A shower of flower sprinkles, which are part of Meghan's sold-out As Ever line, would have to suffice.

By 9:30 a.m., I was out the door and off to the farmers market.

I loved spending my Saturday morning at the farmers market instead of in front of the TV.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Meghan mentions visiting the Montecito Farmers Market on her show, so it only made sense that I stop by mine to grab ingredients for some of her dishes.

After picking up fresh veggies and some honey, I spotted a vendor with small blue flowers inside plastic containers.

"Are these edible?" I asked her.

"Of course," she replied.

A lady who was browsing nearby immediately turned around. She had been on the hunt for edible flowers as well.

"What are you using them for?" she asked.

"I'm … making Meghan Markle's flower ice cubes," I sheepishly confessed.

"I wanted them for her shortbread cookies!" she replied.

Maybe Meghan was more influential than the critics realized?

Back at home, I got to work on my "bedside blooms."

My "bookshelf blooms" for the guest room.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

The first episode of Meghan's show revolves around everything she does to prepare when a guest is staying over. One of my best friends was staying the night during a layover in LA, so it was the perfect time to try some of Meghan's hosting tips.

Meghan says one of her "favorite things to do is prep a guest room," which includes preparing small bouquets of fresh flowers.

"What's at the side of the bed for them? That's their morning and good night moment," she adds.

Unfortunately for my friend Andrew, I don't have nightstands in my guest bedroom yet, so I made some "bookshelf blooms" instead. I followed Meghan's tip to remove some leaves from each stem, which she said allows the water to go straight to the bloom.

Then, I made some floral ice cubes.

Making the floral ice cubes felt like an art project that kids would love.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Meghan makes these floral ice cubes for lunch with her friends, calling them a little moment of "surprise and delight."

I plucked petals from the edible flowers, as well as some yellow florets that came with my purple cauliflower, and sprinkled them in my ice cube tray. According to Meghan, the trick is to then fill the cubes with distilled water so they come out clear instead of cloudy. It felt like an art project that would be fun to do with kids.

Even with the distilled water, I thought my cubes came out kind of cloudy, and I didn't love getting petals in my mouth once they had melted into the water.

For this project, the process was more fun than the result.

I also whipped up Meghan's chilled and scented towels.

It was super easy to make these refreshing towels.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Meghan says these towels are "one of those easy surprises and delights that, after a long day, will bring a lot of joy," adding that it's the "least complicated thing on the planet."

Since Andrew was coming to my house after a five-hour flight from JFK, I figured a chilled towel would be a great way to greet him.

I opted for eucalyptus oil, adding six drops to a big bowl of water. Then, I dunked each small white towel into the bowl, ringing the water out before rolling them up and popping them into the fridge.

Once the towels were chilled, I placed them by the bathroom sink and added a few edible blooms for decoration.

The next morning, Andrew told me the entire bathroom had smelled of eucalyptus and was "so relaxing."

After a quick lunch break, it was time to test out Meghan's recipes.

First, I needed to prepare Chantilly Lili, the dessert Meghan named after her daughter, Princess Lilibet, and recently shared with The New York Times.

It features homemade vanilla pudding layered with bananas and topped with fresh whipped cream, cookie crumbles, and macerated strawberries.

Since the pudding needs to chill overnight, I made it ahead of time so I could finish the dessert on Sunday. It only took about 10 minutes to whip up and stick in the fridge.

While the pudding was quick and easy, Meghan's spring garden pasta salad took way more work.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

The New York Times calls this dish a "perfectly quick spring or summer dinner," a promise that doesn't apply to people with bad knife skills.

Meghan's spring garden pasta salad requires five different veggies to chop, dice, and slice, which took me around 30 minutes. I'm pretty slow with a knife and was already feeling tired from a day packed with projects, so the process was anything but soothing — even with Meghan's preferred cooking soundtrack of "French dinner party music" playing in the background.

Still, the spring garden pasta was a hit at my friend's barbecue that night. Everyone loved all the fresh flavors from the veggies, which were perfectly captured in each bite of floppy rigatoni.

It's a great side dish, but I'm not sure I'd make it again — at least not without an extra pair of hands!

After a good night's sleep, I was ready to begin my second day as the Duchess of Sussex.
Making Meghan Markle crudite board
My crudité platter, inspired by Meghan's tips.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

I kicked things off with a crudité platter, which Meghan says she makes every day for Prince Harry and their children.

"There's nothing so fancy about a crudité platter, except that it's called crudité," she says in one episode, before making a stunning platter complete with edible flowers.

Per Meghan's instructions, I grabbed some rainbow carrots, bell peppers, cucumbers, and purple cauliflower. I also displayed some veggies on beds of leftover Swiss chard to elevate the presentation.

The final step was drizzling olive oil into my store-bought hummus, another Meghan tip. The duchess says it's "always nice to decant your condiments," but I didn't have any cute serving dishes, so I used the bowl from a souvenir I got at Super Nintendo World — a sentence I'm sure has never been spoken in Montecito.

I also finished my Chantilly Lili pudding, which came out beautiful.

I loved the Chantilly Lili dessert, which tasted light and delicious.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

It was much quicker to make the Chantilly Lili than the spring garden pasta. After macerating the berries and making the fresh whipped cream, all I had to do was assemble.

Both my boyfriend and Andrew were impressed with the presentation. The dessert was light and fluffy and struck the perfect balance of sweetness. It's definitely something I would make again.

Before the weekend could come to an end, I had to make Meghan's snack bags.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Probably one of the most cited — and derided — of Meghan's hosting tips was her love of transferring snacks from their original packaging into clear plastic bags, marked with a homemade label.

I knew I had to include it in my weekend in the name of journalism, so I diligently transferred peanut butter pretzels and popcorn into bags for Andrew to take on his flight to Sydney.

The bags looked cute, and getting my friend some snacks before a long flight was a lovely idea that I'd do again. Next time, though, I think I'll just leave them in the original packaging!

My weekend as Meghan taught me more than just how to be a good host.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

At the end of the first season of her show, Meghan tells the camera that "reconnecting with myself, it just gives me so much joy." And you know what? I believe her.

Spending the weekend being creative and staying off screens was refreshing and rewarding. Will I ever do eight different projects in less than 48 hours again? Probably not, but getting a dopamine hit from making flower art and cooking was much needed.

I don't think embracing the above makes Meghan a "trad wife," as many critics claim, just as it didn't make Martha Stewart or Ina Garten one when their shows premiered in the '90s and early 2000s. I think it's just about finding things to do that bring you joy once in a while.

Maybe the lesson from my weekend living like Meghan wasn't really about plastic goodie bags or bouquets. It was about taking the time to stop and smell the flowers … and the chilled eucalyptus towels.

I tried Meghan Markle's first collection of As Ever products. The duchess is playing it safe, but one item stands out.

12 April 2025 at 02:26

  • I tried Meghan Markle's first collection of As Ever products, which sold out in an hour.
  • I bought the three teas, crepe and shortbread cookie mixes, raspberry spread, and flower sprinkles.
  • My favorite was the crepe mix, which was quick, easy, and made delicious crepes.

Ever since Meghan Markle's jams started popping up on celebrities' Instagrams, everyone has wondered the same thing. Could the Duchess of Sussex become the next lifestyle queen?

It's a question that's been endlessly debated in think pieces, not to mention hundreds of articles from British tabloids dissecting every potential rumor and snafu with Meghan's new brand. The interest only intensified when it was revealed earlier this year that she was releasing a whole line of products and a new Netflix show.

But how do Meghan's new products actually taste? We got our hands on the first drop from her As Ever brand, including the famous jam, and are ready to tell you all about it.

Many wondered what Meghan's next move would be as she and Prince Harry continued to navigate their post-royal life.

There have been highs (the hit Netflix series "Harry & Meghan") and lows (that Spotify deal) along the way. However, in March 2024, Meghan revealed she was ready to venture into the lifestyle space with her new brand, American Riviera Orchard.

One year and a trademark dispute later, the brand has been renamed to As Ever and has a key investor in Netflix, which also released Meghan's new lifestyle show "With Love, Meghan," a Martha Stewart-style series that features the duchess in her ultra-luxurious Montecito neighborhood.

The show, which premiered on March 4, was derided by critics but still made Netflix's top 10 list and has already been renewed for a second season.

On April 4, Meghan released six items in her first As Ever collection.

There were mixes for crepes and shortbread cookies, three different teas, a tin of flower sprinkles, the famous jam (now called raspberry spread), and a limited-edition wildflower honey. We were able to buy everything except the honey, which sold out in five minutes.

With the exception of the $28 honey, each product cost between $12 and $15. Meghan recently told Fortune that she wanted her brand to look prestigious but have an "accessible and affordable" price point.

"I think during any time of recession, people still want to find creature comforts, items that can bring them joy," she added.

Our review begins with the teas, which are packaged in beautiful tins.

Meghan's As Ever collection includes hibiscus, peppermint, and herbal lemon ginger teas.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

If you've seen "With Love, Meghan," then you know tea might be the only thing she loves making more than a crudité platter, so it didn't surprise me that it was a big part of her brand. The collection features hibiscus, peppermint, and lemon ginger teas, and each $12 tin comes with 12 sachets.

Each tea comes in a black and gold tin featuring a label with "As Ever" written in the Duchess of Sussex's lovely handwriting. At the top of each label is the gold As Ever logo, a palm tree flanked by two hummingbirds. It's definitely pretty enough to show off on your kitchen counter.

My one design critique? There's no branding on the tea bag labels! It's just a small blank white square. The little label would've been the perfect place to add the logo again or another nice touch to elevate the tea as it dangles from your cup.

First, I tried the hibiscus tea, which had a beautiful color.

Meghan recommends enjoying the hibiscus tea as she does with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet — by letting it "brew with the warmth of the sun." I popped a bag of hibiscus tea into my glass, letting it sit on my windowsill for a few hours.

There was something romantic about watching the color bloom into a bright and beautiful fuchsia hue every time I walked by my kitchen.

Per Meghan's instructions, I served the tea over ice, which allowed its flavor to sing. The floral notes were subtle, with a delightful pop of tartness.

The herbal lemon ginger tea reminded me of my childhood.

According to the packaging, this tea was inspired by a "soothing tincture of lemon and ginger" that Meghan has been making "for years."

I have a Greek mother who believes chamomile tea can cure just about any ailment, whether it be a cold, a tummy ache, or a bout of sadness. When I poured a hot cup of Meghan's lemon ginger tea and breathed in deeply, the smells brought me back to being a kid again.

Along with lemon and ginger, the blend has lemongrass, lemon peel, licorice root, and spearmint (all organic, of course). It makes for a very soothing cup of tea.

Meghan said the peppermint tea is "easily the favorite tea in our home."

I compared Meghan's peppermint tea to a bag from the Traditional Medicinals box I had in my kitchen, and it was hard to discern the difference between the two, although the As Ever bag had a bit of a deeper flavor.

It's not exactly groundbreaking, but it's a nice cup of tea!

After all that tea, I was ready for some crepes.

"Why does a crepe feel more special than a pancake? I don't know, but it does," Meghan says before making a version of these crepes on her show.

According to her newsletter and the As Ever website, the mix was inspired by the crepes Meghan ate at Parisian cafés when she was backpacking as a student. She promises the $14 mix is "easy to prepare and endlessly adaptable."

I'd never made crepes before, so I was intrigued to see if it was as easy as Meghan promised.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

My first crepe was a pale and soggy mess that went straight into the trash. This is through no fault of Meghan's instructions — I'm just not a very confident home chef.

But as Meghan repeatedly says in her show, "we're not in the pursuit of perfection, we're in the pursuit of joy," so I tried again. And again.

By the third crepe, I was getting the hang of it, and by the fifth, I felt like a total pro. "Am now domestic goddess," I thought to myself. (Apparently, my internal voice is now Bridget Jones.)

Meghan's crepes were my favorite product from the As Ever line.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

While making homemade crepes seemed extremely daunting, it was validating to know that even I could quickly whip them up at home. And they were delicious!

The crepes came out light and crispy, providing a bit of crunch with each bite. I followed Meghan's recommendation to try them with a chocolate hazelnut spread, a lovely little sweet treat my boyfriend couldn't get enough of.

I also tried the crepes with the famous raspberry spread that started it all.

Meghan calls herself a "preserving nerd" and clearly loves to make homemade batches. The Duchess of Sussex told Fortune that she'd been sending her homemade products to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos every Christmas for years.

The $14 As Ever raspberry spread is based on her recipe and comes in a special keepsake box. According to the website, a $9 version sans box will be available soon.

The raspberry spread tastes surprisingly fresh and homemade.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

I've seen complaints that Meghan's raspberry spread is "runny." But as she notes on the website, the spread has been crafted with a "fluid texture so it can be drizzled, spread, poured, and enjoyed for so much more than your morning toast."

I personally liked the texture and that I could see dozens of seeds in every spoonful. It made the spread feel like something a friend had crafted in their kitchen. It's slightly sweet, with a refreshing zing from its lemon juice.

I ended the day by making Meghan's shortbread cookies, which came with a package of her flower sprinkles.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

I ran into a few issues while making the shortbread cookie mix, which costs $14.

The box says that your batter should become "light and creamy," which… wasn't the case for me. My batter was powdery and dry, and I struggled to roll the dough onto my counter without it breaking apart.

After some panic Googling, I added a few drops of cold water to help bind the dough. I was able to form the dough into a log and placed it in my fridge for an hour to chill.

Once the dough had properly chilled, the cookies were ready in 11 minutes.

After taking the dough out of the oven, I could easily slice the cookies.

I filled two baking sheets with about 20 cookies and still had over a quarter of the dough left over to store in my freezer.

I topped off the cookies with more flower sprinkles before digging in.
As ever shortbread cookies.

Yasara Gunawardena for BI

Meghan tells Mindy Kaling on her show that the flower sprinkles are "just an accessory." But she loves putting them on almost everything, including doughnuts, salad, and eggs.

They added more of a pop to the cookies, which came out pretty pale from the oven. I wish the instructions had included some of the tricks Meghan uses while making these on her show, including adding a little egg wash on top, which would've helped turn them golden, and rolling the sides in sugar to add some needed sweetness.

Still, the shortbread was a great base for the raspberry spread, and my boyfriend and I found that the cookies were slowly growing on us.

"These are actually good," he declared the next day.

Meghan's first As Ever collection is playing it safe, but her crepes are really great.

Jake Rosenberg / Netflix

After finishing Meghan's new Netflix show, I told my friend Sam that it felt like the equivalent of placing cucumbers over your eyes for an at-home spa day.

"It doesn't ultimately do anything for your skin, but boy, is it relaxing!" she replied, calling it the perfect metaphor.

I'm not surprised Meghan is playing it safe, both with the first season of her show and with her first collection of products. She's tentatively staging a comeback and is all too aware that just about everything she does will be picked apart in the process.

Her first As Ever collection is full of solid products I'd happily use again — especially those delicious crepes. But I hope we see Meghan take some risks and infuse her brand with a bit more personality as she gains more confidence in the lifestyle space.

Prince Harry is being accused of bullying by the chair of a charity he cofounded. Here's what happened.

  • On March 26, Prince Harry resigned from Sentebale, a charity he cofounded.
  • He resigned in solidarity with the board of trustees, who stepped down after the chair refused to.
  • Now, the chair, Sophie Chandauka, has accused Prince Harry of bullying her.

One of Prince Harry's charitable organizations has become the center of controversy.

On March 26, Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho announced they were resigning as patrons of Sentebale, a charity they cofounded in 2006.

The pair said in their announcement that it was "devastating" they had to step down and pointed to issues with the organization's chair, Sophie Chandauka, as the reason for their resignation.

Days later, Chandauka accused Prince Harry of "harassment and bullying at scale" in a Sky News interview.

Sentebale in turmoil

When it was founded, Sentebale aimed to support children and young people living with HIV or AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. In 2024, it expanded its mission to help young people more generally in southern Africa.

The princes confounded the organization in honor of their late mothers and have maintained a close relationship for decades. Prince Seeiso even appeared in the Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan" in 2022.

Harry and Seeiso have been patrons of Sentebale for nearly 20 years, with Harry frequently traveling to Africa to support the organization.

However, in recent months, tensions have been mounting between Sentebale's board and Chandauka, who was appointed chair in July 2023. Chandauka, a lawyer and biotech founder, had previously been a Sentebale board member from 2009 to 2015, according to the organization's website.

Five former Sentebale trustees said in a statement shared with Business Insider that they "made the difficult decision to unanimously resign," adding that they saw "no other path forward as the result of our loss in trust and confidence in the Chair of the board."

"Our priority has always been, and will always be, what's in the best interest of the charity, and it's desperately sad the breakdown in relationship escalated to a lawsuit by the Chair against the charity, to block us from voting her out after our request for her resignation was rejected," the trustees said. "We could not in good conscience allow Sentebale to undertake that legal and financial burden and have been left with no other option but to vacate our positions."

CBS News said the trustees asked Chandauka to resign because of "a change in Sentebale's mission." On Tuesday, the BBC also reported that financial issues led to tension at the organization.

Harry and Seeiso announced their resignation in a joint statement "in support of and solidarity with the board of trustees."

"It is devastating that the relationship between the charity's trustees and the chair of the board broke down beyond repair, creating an untenable situation," their statement said. "What's transpired is unthinkable. We are in shock that we have to do this, but we have a continued responsibility to Sentebale's beneficiaries, so we will be sharing all of our concerns with the Charity Commission as to how this came about."

"Although we may no longer be Patrons, we will always be its founders, and we will never forget what this charity is capable of achieving when it is in the right care," the princes said.

Chandauka said in a statement shared with People that she refused to step down at the board's request because "beneath all the victim narrative and fiction that has been syndicated to press is the story of a woman who dared to blow the whistle about issues of poor governance, weak executive management, abuse of power, bullying, harassment, misogyny, misogynoir — and the coverup that ensued."

Chandauka did not respond to a request for comment from BI.

The New York Times also reported that Chandauka replaced the board with four new members following the resignations and filed a report against the former trustees with the Charity Commission, which regulates and registers charities in England and Wales, including Sentebale. Harry and Seeiso said in their statement that they also intended to file a report to the commission.

When contacted by BI for this story on Tuesday, the Charity Commission said, "We can confirm that we are aware of concerns about the governance of Sentebale. We are assessing the issues to determine the appropriate regulatory steps."

On Thursday, the Charity Commission announced it had opened a compliance case "to examine concerns raised about the charity Sentebale."

"The regulator's focus, in line with its statutory remit, will be to determine whether the charity's current and former trustees, including its chair, have fulfilled their duties and responsibilities under charity law," the Charity Commission said. "The Commission is not an adjudicator or mediator and is guided by the principle of ensuring trustees fulfill their primary duty to their charitable purpose and beneficiaries."

A source close to the trustees told BI that the board "fully expected this publicity stunt and reached their collective decision with this in mind. They remain firm in their resignation, for the good of the charity, and look forward to the adjudication of the truth."

Then, last weekend, Chandauka accused Harry of "bullying" her by going public with Sentebale's problems.

Sophie Chandauka said Prince Harry was 'bullying' her

On Sunday, Chandauka appeared on the Sky News program "Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips" to discuss Sentebale, focusing on Harry in her interview — even though Seeiso and the board members also resigned.

Chandauka said in the interview that her relationship with the prince had largely been "fantastic" but accused him of "harassment and bullying." Specifically, she said he did not inform her of his decision to resign as patron before he and Seeiso released their statement publicly.

"At some point on Tuesday, Prince Harry authorized the release of a damaging piece of news to the outside world without informing me or my country directors or my executive director," she said. "Can you imagine what that attack has done for me, on me, and the 540 individuals in the Sentebale organizations and their family?"

"That is an example of harassment and bullying at scale," Chandauka said, adding that she believes Harry activated "the Sussex machine" to publicize Sentebale's issues.

A source familiar with the events told BI that despite Chandauka's comments, Harry and Seeiso had sent their joint resignation letter to the trustees and the chair on March 10.

In the same interview, Chandauka also said she had issues with Prince Harry since she became chair and believed he had been trying to oust her for months.

She said his step back as a senior royal put Sentebale at financial risk and that his Netflix series about polo interfered with a Sentebale charity fundraiser, pointing to a venue change. However, a source close to the production said the show's involvement ultimately led to another player participating and Sentebale being featured in the docuseries.

Chandauka also said Meghan Markle's unexpected attendance became a problem at the match. Cameras filmed an awkward interaction between her and Meghan as they tried to fit onstage together during an awards ceremony, which led to negative press stories about Meghan. Chandauka told the Financial Times that Harry asked her to release a statement in support of his wife at the time, but she refused.

"I said no, we're not setting a precedent by which we become an extension of the Sussex PR machine," she told the outlet.

As of Thursday, Chandauka remains chair of Sentebale's board.

Prince Harry's immigration docs paint 'clear picture' into how he was allowed into US: report

19 March 2025 at 11:02

Documents related to Prince Harry’s immigration record were released Tuesday and paint a "clear picture" of how the British royal was allowed to move to the United States.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released court declarations from agents in the immigration case of Prince Harry, while a closed-door hearing transcript of a lawsuit filed by the Heritage Foundation into the royal’s immigration case was also released, with one expert claiming the British royal likely lied on his application despite the documents being heavily redacted.

"The key information may be at State," Heritage Foundation lawyer Samuel Dewey said in a report in the New York Post on the new documents, noting the heavy mentions of the State Department in the documents that point "pretty clear picture" of how Harry was able to navigate the U.S. immigration process.

While Harry’s immigration records were not released and the documents were heavily redacted, Dewey believes there are plenty of hints in what was released in federal court Tuesday after a deadline set by Judge Carl Nichols.

MEGHAN MARKLE BLAMED BY PRINCE HARRY’S PALS FOR MAKING HIM ‘TOO WOKE’ BEFORE ROYAL EXIT: AUTHOR

Dewey told the New York Post that the documents point to the possibility that Harry lied and failed to divulge his history of drug use on what was likely a 0-1 visa application, which are typically filed with the State Department for people "of exceptional talent or ability."

The Heritage Foundation lawyer argued that if Harry had admitted to taking drugs, the information would have gone into a DS-160 file and been sent to DHS in its entirety, but would not have ended up with DHS if he was dishonest about his prior drug use.

Dewey believes that the documents are proof that the State Department and DHS were still withholding information from Heritage and the court, noting an excerpt from the closed-door hearing that was released Tuesday.

"While I have some of the ‘true set of facts’ right now, I don’t have all of them," Judge Nichols said at the April 30, 2024, hearing. "And I well understand that some of this information that we’ve been talking about today is not at DHS."

MEGHAN MARKLE, PRINCE HARRY SLAMMED BY JUSTINE BATEMAN FOR THEIR ‘AGGRESSIVE VICTIM OLYMPICS CAMPAIGN’

The judge would make a second reference to Harry’s case being split between DHS and State, noting at one point that "all of the relevant information was at DHS" and that if the case "didn’t have State off to the side," it would be easier "to weigh the public’s interest in knowing that against the privacy concerns."

The Heritage Foundation initially made a Freedom of Information Act request for Harry’s immigration records in 2023, arguing that the British royal may have received special treatment when allowed to move to the U.S. in 2020.

The case arose after Harry admitted to his prior drug use in his 2023 memoir, "Spare," calling into question his honesty on his immigration paperwork a few years prior.

"Of course I had been taking cocaine at that time," Harry wrote in the book, referencing a time when he was 17 years old and sought to "feel different."

"At someone’s house, during a hunting weekend, I was offered a line, and since then I had consumed some more," he continued.

Noting the admission, the Heritage Foundation has argued that it is in the public’s interest to see the immigration records to determine whether the British royal was honest or received preferential treatment on his 2020 visa application.

"Time for Prince Harry to go home. Every partial answer raises three new questions. We now believe he has committed a felony by lying on an 0-1 visa and on form DS-160," Mike Howell, Oversight Project executive director at the Heritage Foundation, told the New York Post.

"The Garland Justice Department and Prince Harry conspired to hide the truth and waste a massive amount of public resources to defend someone who hates their own country and is hell-bent on tearing down this one too," he added. "Prince Harry should self-deport now. He can use his Royal status to drink at the Netflix liberal grift machine and bash the results of the 2024 Presidential Election back in the UK on their taxpayer dime."

I tried Meghan Markle's one-pot pasta. The easy recipe was perfect for a weeknight dinner.

18 March 2025 at 09:54

  • I made Meghan Markle's one-pot spaghetti from her Netflix series "With Love, Meghan."
  • The pasta dish is made in a skillet using boiled water, tomatoes, and two different types of greens.
  • The final dish lacked rich flavor, but it was tasty and shockingly easy to make.

Meghan Markle's one-pot pasta recipe has sparked mixed reactions online.

However, for those short on time and in need of a quick, easy meal, I thought the simple pasta dish fit the bill.

In the first episode of Meghan's new Netflix series "With Love, Meghan," the duchess walks her friend and makeup artist Daniel Martin through one of her go-to dinners, which she calls her single-skillet spaghetti.

The "family favorite" pasta recipe — yes, even her and Prince Harry's kids supposedly love it — uses spaghetti, Swiss chard, kale, baby tomatoes, and grated Parmesan cheese.

It has received criticism online, with some outlets calling the finished product "bland" and others comparing it to similar recipes already in existence.

While the dish is by no means packed with rich, creamy flavor, I did think the tomatoes, cheese, and red pepper flakes did a lot of heavy lifting to add flavor.

The pasta took under 20 minutes to make and used one pot, which saved me time cleaning up. The recipe seemed ideal for people who want to feed an entire family with little to no time to prepare dinner.

Here's how to make Meghan Markle's one-pot pasta.

I started by gathering the ingredients for the one-pot pasta.

The recipe calls for fresh greens, lemon, and cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

For this recipe you'll need:

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 pint plum tomatoes
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • A box of spaghetti
  • 3 ½ cups of water
  • Swiss chard
  • Kale
  • ¼ cup Parmigiano Reggiano cheese
  • Red pepper flakes

Meghan doesn't list any exact measurements in the scene, other than how much water she uses, so I estimated how much to use of each ingredient.

I spent $28.10, excluding tax, on ingredients at my local grocery store in Brooklyn, New York.

I chopped the tomatoes in half and added them to my skillet.

I chopped my plum tomatoes on a wooden cutting board.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Meghan said this doesn't need to be precise and that you can use whatever tomatoes you have on hand, from a mix of red or yellow plum tomatoes or more exotic varieties like heirlooms.

I added the tomatoes to my skillet with chopped garlic and olive oil.

I seasoned the garlic and tomatoes with salt.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At this point, you keep the stovetop off — when Meghan is making it, she does these steps while the pan is on the countertop.

After adding the olive oil and tomatoes to the pan, I sprinkled the entire skillet with salt. I then added the chopped garlic and mixed it with a wooden spoon.

I then added about a box of spaghetti to the pan.

I added the spaghetti to the pot and zested a whole lemon over it.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Part of what makes this pasta dish especially easy to make is that you don't need to boil the pasta in a separate pot. Instead, the pasta water comes together with the other ingredients to cook the pasta and make the sauce.

I zested a whole lemon over the pasta noodles and then started boiling my water in a tea kettle.

It took about 3 cups of water to cover the pasta and tomatoes. Then, I covered the skillet with a lid.

I covered the skillet with a lid and let the pasta continue cooking.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

In the show, Meghan said to cover the spaghetti with water, which she said takes about 3 ½ cups. However, the amount you use will depend on the size of your skillet.

Even though the water was fully boiled when I added it, I noticed that it wasn't hot enough to cook the pasta fully since the entire dish had to be brought to a boil.

I turned the heat on my stove to medium-high and let the pasta boil for about five minutes.

While the pasta was cooking, I chopped the Swiss chard.

I chopped up the Swiss chard, including the stems.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Meghan doesn't say exactly how much she uses, but I ended up using about three stems. She recommends chopping the red part of the stem for added color and flavor, as well as the leaves.

When the pasta was fully brought to a boil, I lowered the heat and added in the greens.

I added the Swiss chard and kale to the pot.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I tried to separate the spaghetti noodles using a wooden spoon but found that they initially stuck together. However, as the pasta continued cooking, they eventually separated.

I also added the chopped Swiss chard and a couple of handfuls of massaged kale, which I tore apart with my hands and added directly to the pot.

I mixed the pasta with the greens and let it cook for a few more minutes on low heat.

I continued cooking the pasta on low heat for a few minutes.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Meghan said the starch from the pasta would create a "creamy" sauce without the need for cream. Even after letting it all cook down for a few minutes, I thought it still appeared pretty watery.

After I added the grated Parmigiano Reggiano, the sauce started to come together.

The pasta came together when I added the grated cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The blistered tomatoes and cheese made the sauce slightly thicker and a light-orange color. The pasta noodles were also perfectly al-dente.

I topped the dish with a pinch of fresh salt and red pepper flakes, per Meghan's suggestion.

I was really impressed by the final result, and by how easy it was to make.
meghan markle one pot pasta
The finished result was a light and flavorful weeknight meal.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I love having a one-pot recipe on hand, especially during a busy workweek. This pasta dish made for a quick, healthy dinner.

The lemon and slightly blistered plum tomatoes added flavor, while the red pepper flakes added a kick — I was surprised Meghan and Harry's kids would be into it. It tasted light and fresh, and I thought the Swiss chard and kale added texture.

However, it was far from the most flavorful or decadent pasta dish I've ever had.

Still, it was also unbelievably quick and easy to make, and even easier to clean up.

I could see myself adding this recipe into my weekly rotation for a quick dinner, though I'm not sure I would make it for a dinner party or when I'm really wanting to impress someone with my culinary prowess.

Meghan Markle wants people to know her name is actually 'Meghan Sussex.' Here's how surnames work in the royal family.

5 March 2025 at 15:00

  • Meghan Markle revealed on her Netflix show that her family's last name is Sussex.
  • Some royals use Mountbatten-Windsor as a last name, but Harry never has.
  • The change to Sussex aligns with decadeslong royal traditions.

Meghan Markle isn't Meghan Markle anymore.

In episode two of her new Netflix show, "With Love, Meghan," Meghan, 43, told Mindy Kaling that her last name was Sussex. The name comes from her title as Duchess of Sussex, which she gained when she married Prince Harry, 40.

Meghan told Kaling she found it "meaningful" to share the same name as her children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, calling Sussex their "family name." And on Wednesday, Drew Barrymore introduced her as Meghan Sussex in a clip of her appearance on "The Drew Barrymore Show," which airs Thursday.

However, Archie and Lili weren't born with that last name, so Harry and Meghan's decision to use it may confuse people who don't religiously follow the royal family.

Here's a breakdown of how surnames work for the royals and how Harry and Meghan may have made the change to Sussex.

Royal last names

Harry's legal name when he was born was Henry Charles Albert David, and he didn't have a last name on his birth certificate. His official title was His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, as his father was the Prince of Wales.

Often, royals simply do not use surnames, though some members of the British royal family use Mountbatten-Windsor as a last name when needed.

The royal family has used the last name Windsor since 1917. In 1960, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip decided that their direct descendants who did not have HRH titles or have the title of prince or princess would use Mountbatten-Windsor, incorporating Philip's last name, according to the royal family's website.

Harry never used Mountbatten-Windsor because he always had an HRH title. Instead, he went by Harry Wales when he needed a last name, such as when he was in school and the army, as did Prince William.

Ahead of their May 2018 wedding, Buckingham Palace announced Harry and Meghan's new royal titles would be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Meghan gained an HRH title as Harry's wife.

In contrast to their father, Archie and Lilibet's birth certificates listed Mountbatten-Windsor as their last names, as they did not have the titles of prince and princess at the time of their births. Instead, they were "Master Archie" and "Miss Lilibet."

The switch to Sussex

Though he agreed not to use it for official business in 2020, Harry did not formally give up his HRH title when he stepped back as a senior royal, so he never adopted Mountbatten-Windsor.

However, Harry's children got new names and titles when the royal line of succession shifted after Queen Elizabeth II died and King Charles III took the throne in September 2022.

Archie and Lili moved to sixth and seventh in line for the throne and became Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex. Buckingham Palace updated the line of succession on its website to reflect their title changes in March 2023.

Because they now had prince and princess titles, it would go against royal tradition for Archie and Lili to have continued using Mountbatten-Windsor despite it being on their birth certificates. So, the change to Sussex isn't new; it aligns with long-standing royal traditions.

In March 2024, People reported that Harry and Meghan were using Sussex as their children's last name at school, adding that "Sussex is their family surname."

It's unclear if Harry and Meghan have legally changed their last name to Sussex. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Whether they made the change legally or not, Harry and Meghan are doing the same thing as Prince William and Kate Middleton.

William and Kate were named the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2022, and now, their children are Prince George of Wales, Princess Charlotte of Wales, and Prince Louis of Wales. They use Wales as their last name at school, just as their father and uncle did.

Prince Harry's absence from 'With Love, Meghan' is a textbook reality TV move

5 March 2025 at 10:51

  • Meghan Markle's "With Love, Meghan" premiered on Netflix on Tuesday.
  • Prince Harry only appears in the final episode of the show.
  • His absence from the show can help Meghan grow her own brand.

Meghan Markle is back in her TV star era.

Her much-anticipated lifestyle series "With Love, Meghan" dropped on Netflix on Tuesday. In the show's eight episodes, the Duchess of Sussex shares entertaining tips and recipes with her famous friends, and she works on her craft with cooking experts like Roy Choi.

However, one person is conspicuously absent from most of the series: Meghan's husband, Prince Harry.

The Duke of Sussex only appears briefly in the show's final episode, a change for the couple who have been attached at the hip, particularly in their work, for nearly a decade.

Although it's a shift for the duke and duchess, the professional separation makes perfect sense for Meghan as she returns to her lifestyle roots.

The reality TV playbook

Harry and Meghan began working together when they announced their engagement in 2017, which is standard for senior royals. They continued to brand themselves as a package deal in their early post-royal projects, like their first Netflix show, "Harry & Meghan."

"I think they were very smart in the early days of trying to give the public what they wanted," Kristen Meinzer, a royal commentator, told Business Insider. "The public wanted to know the story of what happened behind the castle doors."

In recent months, that strategy has shifted. Harry has focused on philanthropic endeavors, attending events without his wife, while Meghan prioritizes her series and forthcoming lifestyle brand, As Ever.

Stacy Jones, the founder and CEO of Hollywood Branded, told BI that Meghan's decision to make "With Love, Meghan" largely Harry-less was savvy, even if his royal lineage is part of why people are tuning into the show.

Jones compared "With Love, Meghan" to other reality series that star women married to famous men, like "The Osbournes" or some of the "Real Housewives" franchises. "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" also relied heavily on Robert Kardashian's memories in its early seasons.

Jones said that the successful man functions as a "prop" while his wife is the star beloved by audiences, and he typically only makes brief on-screen appearances — just as Harry does on "With Love, Meghan."

Sure, having your literal prince of a husband make one long-awaited guest appearance on the series probably helps keep viewers tuned in, but keeping Harry off-screen until that moment allows Meghan to sell herself as an individual rather than just one half of the Sussex team.

"It's important to have that prop because that's the unique definer," Jones said about Harry's royal status. "Meghan with Harry is special, but Meghan does not have to be with Harry at her side all the time."

Off-screen support

Although he isn't on screen much, traces of Harry are all over the show, as Meghan discusses her family's favorite foods or their routine with their children and dogs.

She also told People that she and Harry are in "a honeymoon period again" because of her work on the show, adding that he and her children frequently visited her on set.

"My husband met me when I had The Tig, and I see this spark in his eye when he sees me doing the thing that I was doing when he first met me," she told People, speaking of the blog she ran from 2014 to 2017. "I think he loves watching as much as I love doing that creative process."

Jones said those traces of Harry in the series can remind the audience they are a unit even as they define themselves as individuals, and Meghan can do the same for Harry as he finds his post-royal identity.

Meghan's appearance at the Invictus Games in February was a step in the right direction. She seemed like Harry's supporter rather than the cohost of the games, even leaving them a few days early to return to their children.

Harry and Meghan's professional lives will likely always be intertwined in some capacity, but their newfound distance will benefit them both.

Meghan Markle is returning to her lifestyle roots. Here's how she made it there, from her Hollywood days to royal life.

  • Meghan Markle became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry.
  • She was born in Los Angeles and was an actor before becoming a working royal.
  • In 2025, Meghan is returning to the lifestyle space with a new show and business.

From starring on a TV show to marrying a literal prince charming, Meghan Markle's life sounds like the stuff of fairy tales.

However, royal life wasn't all it was cracked up to be for Meghan, 43. In January 2020, Meghan and Prince Harry, 40, stepped back as senior royals.

Five years later, the couple are raising their two children — who are sixth and seventh in line for the British throne — in California, building a non-royal life that still allows them to leverage their fame and global influence.

Here's everything to know about Meghan's life so far.

Meghan Markle's early life

Meghan was born Rachel Meghan Markle in Los Angeles on August 4, 1981, to Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland.

Thomas Markle and Ragland split when Meghan was just 2. In the Netflix series "Harry & Meghan," she said that she spent weekdays with her mother and weekends with her dad throughout her childhood.

Ragland worked as a social worker and yoga instructor, while Meghan's father was a lighting designer for shows like "Married… with Children." Meghan got her first experience with Hollywood by visiting sets with him.

Meghan has two half-siblings from Thomas' previous marriages, but she told Oprah Winfrey in 2021 that she was raised as an "only child" and didn't have contact with her siblings from her Markle family.

She attended the Hollywood Little Red Schoolhouse for elementary school and later Immaculate Heart High School before studying at Northwestern University, where she double majored in acting and international relations.

Meghan was an activist from a young age. When she was 11, she petitioned Procter & Gamble to change the tagline of a soap commercial with sexist undertones.

Meghan Markle's acting career

After graduating from Northwestern in 2003, Meghan was cast in a series of smaller roles, including an appearance on "General Hospital" and a stint as a briefcase girl on "Deal or No Deal."

Then, in 2011, she landed her breakout role as Rachel Zane on "Suits." She starred on the show from 2011 to 2018, moving to Toronto to film the series.

USA Network

Meghan also launched her lifestyle blog, The Tig, in 2014. The blog featured everything from recipes and travel recommendations to interviews with fellow celebrities.

While her acting career flourished, Meghan dedicated much of her offscreen time to service work. She became a United Nations women's advocate and gave a speech at the UN Women's 2015 Conference, recounting her plea to Procter & Gamble to change its ad in her youth.

Meghan also became a World Vision ambassador in 2016, taking philanthropic trips to Rwanda and India through her partnership with the organization. The same year, she became a counselor for One Young World.

Falling for Prince Harry

Harry and Meghan met in 2016 after the prince saw Meghan in a video on a mutual friend's Instagram page, in which she was wearing the dog filter, as they shared in the Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan."

After their pal told Meghan that Harry was interested in her, they connected via Instagram DMs. Harry and Meghan's first date took place in London in July 2016.

When they met, Harry was 32, and Meghan was 35. She was previously married to Trevor Engelson, a film producer, from 2011 to 2013, while Harry had never been married.

The couple also shared in their Netflix docuseries that their relationship escalated quickly, saying they went on a five-day safari in Botswana for their third date.

After reports of their relationship surfaced in October 2016, Harry publicly confirmed they were a couple in November, using the statement to condemn the "wave of abuse and harassment" Meghan experienced from the press and "social media trolls."

Harry proposed to Meghan in November 2017 in the north garden at Kensington Palace, and they announced their engagement on November 27. USA Today announced Meghan was leaving Suits the next day. A few months earlier, Meghan closed The Tig, preparing for her new royal life.

Harry and Meghan got married on May 19, 2018, at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, and she officially became the Duchess of Sussex. Millions of people watched the couple say "I do," and celebrities and royals flocked to the UK for the event.

However, Meghan's father caused tension in the lead-up to the nuptials. On May 14, 2018, less than a week before the wedding, tabloids, including TMZ and the Daily Mail, reported that Thomas posed for staged paparazzi photos in exchange for money. Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, said on the British program "Loose Women" that the paparazzi photos were her idea.

When news of the staged photos was reported, Thomas told TMZ he wouldn't attend the wedding. He told the outlet he changed his mind on May 15 at 8 a.m., but he then said he wouldn't go to the event at 2 p.m. the same day because of an emergency heart surgery.

Meghan confirmed in a statement just two days before the wedding that her father would not attend. King Charles III walked her down the aisle.

Royal life — and a step back

Once Meghan and Harry were engaged, she became a working royal. As she took on duties, her fresh approach to royal fashion was often the topic of conversation, and she used her new platform as a duchess to promote feminism.

Harry and Meghan went on their first royal tour as a couple to Australia in October 2018, announcing they were expecting their first baby just before it started. They welcomed their son, Prince Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, on May 6, 2019, just shy of a year after their wedding.

Meghan later shared in an interview with Oprah Winfrey and in "Harry & Meghan" that she was struggling with her mental health throughout her pregnancy with Archie because of the intense media scrutiny she faced — particularly from the Royal Rota outlets, which have direct access to the royal family and that the couple said often featured reporting with racist undertones. Studies later found they were also the subject of coordinated hate campaigns on social media.

Meghan said the Firm didn't allow her to seek support for her mental health, even as she struggled with suicidal ideation.

"I just didn't want to be alive anymore," she told Winfrey in 2021. "That was a clear and real and frightening and constant thought."

The couple also told Winfrey that members of the royal family questioned how dark Archie's skin may be during Meghan's pregnancy, adding to their stress.

Meghan added that reports that she had made Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, cry ahead of her wedding were false. In fact, Meghan said Kate made her cry, though the princess later apologized.

In his 2023 memoir "Spare," Harry said there had been ongoing tension between the Sussexes and the Windsors when Meghan joined the royal family, largely stemming from different thoughts on how they should approach the press and King Charles and Queen Camilla's close relationship with certain outlets. Harry even said William physically attacked him during an argument in 2019.

Because of the tension, the couple said in "Harry & Meghan" that they proposed moving to other Commonwealth countries between 2018 and 2019, which they thought would allow them to continue serving as working royals, have some distance from the Royal Rota system, and put other members of the monarchy in the spotlight in the UK.

They proposed moving to New Zealand in 2018, South Africa in April 2019, and Canada in December 2019, but none of the moves panned out. Harry said he believed the Firm leaked the plans for the moves to South Africa and Canada to the press, which made it difficult to move forward with them.

Then, on January 8, 2020, Harry and Meghan announced they were stepping back as senior royals and planned to "work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

They made their final appearance as senior royals on March 9, 2020, and they returned to Canada after the event, where they had been staying since December 2019. Soon after, they relocated to California amid the coronavirus pandemic, staying in Tyler Perry's home before buying their own house in Montecito, California, in July 2020.

Post-royal life

Meghan and Harry were initially quiet in the months after they left the royal family, but they made a series of moves in the second half of 2020 that charted their path for the coming years.

They signed a production deal with Netflix, reportedly worth $100 million, in August 2020 and a separate $20 million podcast deal with Spotify in December 2020. In October 2020, they founded Archewell Inc., an umbrella organization for both a charitable organization and a production company.

They announced they were expecting their second child in February 2021, and in their now-famous interview with Winfrey in March 2021, they shared they were having a daughter. Princess Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born on June 4, 2021. Her name honors both Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana.

Meghan also released her first children's book, "The Bench," in June 2021, which became an instant New York Times bestseller. Her podcast "Archetypes" was initially a hit when Meghan released it in August 2022, beating out Joe Rogan's podcast for the No. 1 spot on Spotify, though Harry and Meghan's relationship with Spotify ended in 2023.

"Harry & Meghan" was also a massive success when it premiered in December 2022, on the heels of Queen Elizabeth II's death in September. Harry and Meghan returned to the UK after her death, taking a walkabout with William and Kate at Windsor Castle to greet mourners and sitting with the royal family at her funeral.

Meghan also won a handful of lawsuits in the early years after her step back as a senior royal. In 2019, she sued the Mail on Sunday for misuse of her private information, copyright infringement, and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 after it published a handwritten letter she wrote her father, and she won on all three counts in December 2021.

In December 2020, she and Harry separately settled a suit they filed against Splash UK that said the paparazzi agency would no longer take photos of the Sussex family. In March 2023, a judge dismissed a defamation case Samantha Markle filed against her half-sister.

After keeping a pretty low profile in 2023, Meghan and Harry went on a handful of quasi-royal tours in 2024, visiting Nigeria because the country is interested in hosting Harry's Invictus Games and promoting online safety in Colombia.

In early 2025, the couple seemed to be dividing and conquering professionally, with Harry focusing on service-oriented work while Meghan turned her attention to lifestyle-focused ventures.

Her new Netflix series, "With Love, Meghan," was set to premiere in January 2025, though she postponed its release several months following the wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles. She and Harry were photographed supporting victims of the fire in its aftermath.

The show will feature Meghan sharing recipes, gardening and entertaining advice, and appearances from her famous friends. She returned to Instagram to announce the series on January 1 and used the account to reveal her new lifestyle brand, As Ever.

As Ever was originally branded American Riviera Orchard, but Meghan said she decided to change it to As Ever after Netflix signed on as her partner, as the new name would allow her to broaden the scope of the business.

Both the show and As Ever feel like a continuation of Meghan's lifestyle expertise, which she flexed with The Tig.

Trump doesn’t plan to deport Prince Harry, saying Meghan Markle is enough of a burden for the royal

9 February 2025 at 02:00

President Donald Trump on Friday said that he isn’t interested in deporting Prince Harry, who famously left Britain with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2020, eventually settling in Montecito, California.

The Duke of Sussex is in hot water after conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation filed a lawsuit last year against the Department of Homeland Security to have his immigration records released following Harry admitting to illegal drug use in the past in his 2023 memoir "Spare."

"I don’t want to do that," Trump told the New York Post on Friday after being asked if he would deport the royal. "I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible."

Markle has criticized Trump in the past, calling him "misogynistic" and "divisive" during a TV appearance ahead of the 2016 election.

PRINCE HARRY, MEGHAN MARKLE, VISIT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO SUPPORT WILDFIRE VICTIMS, RECOVERY EFFORTS

In 2019, before a state visit to the U.K. during his first term as president, Trump called the Duchess of Sussex "nasty" over her remarks about him.

He then went on to meet with the royal family during the visit, minus Markle, who was with newborn Archie at the time.

He also told Piers Morgan in 2022 that Harry was "whipped like no person he had ever seen."

The Heritage Foundation in its lawsuit says that Harry may have lied on his immigration forms about his past drug use or was given preferential treatment by the government and called on the records to be released.

"I’ll be urging the president to release Prince Harry’s immigration records and the president does have that legal authority to do that," Nile Gardiner of the Heritage Foundation previously told the New York Post.

"It’s important because this is an issue of the rule of law, transparency and accountability. No one should be above the law," Gardiner added. "Donald Trump is ushering in a new era of strict border control enforcement, and you know, Prince Harry should be held fully to account as he has admitted to extensive illegal drug use."

This week a federal judge said he is "likely" to release Harry’s immigration files after the first hearing in the royal’s high-profile case since Trump took office.

U.S. District Court Judge Carl J. Nichols said Harry’s files should be released "to the maximum extent possible," during Wednesday’s hearing in Washington, D.C., according to a report from the New York Post, with the judge reasoning that he is "required to make public everything that can be made public" but would take care not to violate any privacy laws.

Last year during the campaign, Trump told Nigel Farage in an interview that the government would have to take the "appropriate action" if Harry was found to have lied on his immigration forms, but didn't explicitly say he would seek to deport him.

Trump also accused the Biden administration of "protecting" Harry, saying in a separate interview with the Daily Express in February 2024 "I wouldn’t protect him. He betrayed the Queen. That’s unforgivable. He would be on his own if it was down to me."

On Friday, Trump conversely praised Prince William, with whom Harry has a long-running feud, as a "great young man."

Trump recently met with William in December in Paris when the two attended the reopening of the Notre Dame cathedral following its devastating fire.

Prince Harry sees court setback on immigration records case in first hearing since Trump took office

6 February 2025 at 07:18

A federal judge indicated that he is "likely" to release immigration files on Prince Harry after the first hearing in the royal’s high-profile case since President Donald Trump took office.

"I’m going to take this in stages," Nichols said, noting that the government will have the ability to propose potential redactions.

The Wednesday hearing marked the first in the case since the inauguration of Trump, who has been pressed in recent weeks to step in and unseal Harry’s immigration records.

"I’ll be urging the president to release Prince Harry’s immigration records and the president does have that legal authority to do that," Nile Gardiner of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank behind the lawsuit to unseal Harry’s records, told the New York Post.

PRINCE HARRY, MEGHAN MARKLE, VISIT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TO SUPPORT WILDFIRE VICTIMS, RECOVERY EFFORTS

At issue in the case is whether Harry lied on immigration forms or was provided with special treatment when he initially moved to the U.S. in 2020, a question that arose after the royal admitted to using illegal drugs in his memoir "Spare," which was released in 2023.

The admission by Harry sparked a lawsuit by the Heritage Foundation, which sued the Department of Homeland Security in an attempt to have the royal’s immigration records released.

For his part, Trump indicated on the campaign trail that he is open to deporting Harry and has in the past been critical of the royal’s move to the United States.

"He has been so disrespectful to the country, and I think he's an embarrassment," Trump said in a 2022 interview with Piers Morgan.

  • Meghan Markle is delaying the release of her series "With Love, Meghan" because of the LA wildfires.
  • The Netflix show will now premiere on March 4.
  • Meghan and Prince Harry were spotted handing out food to evacuees.

Meghan Markle is postponing the premiere of her Netflix series.

On Sunday, Netflix announced that "With Love, Meghan" will now be released on March 4 instead of January 15.

The streaming service said in a statement that the Duchess of Sussex requested the show's premiere be delayed because of the "ongoing devastation" of the Los Angeles wildfires and that the decision had Netflix's "full support."

"I'm thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch, as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California," Meghan said of the delay in Netflix's announcement. Representatives for Meghan and Prince Harry didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Meghan and Harry were also spotted on Friday supporting victims of the Eaton Fire in the Altadena area of Los Angeles.

The couple handed out meals to people at the Pasadena Convention Center, connected with evacuees, and spoke with World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés and Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo, ABC News reported. Harry and Meghan largely flew under the radar during their visit, wearing ball caps and masks for much of the day.

Gordo told Fox 11 that Harry and Meghan wanted "to be as helpful as they can be" and that Harry, in particular, "really buoyed the spirits of the first responders" when he spoke to them.

"They're just very caring people who are concerned for their friends and neighbors," Gordo added of the couple.

Meghan was born and raised in Los Angeles, and she and Harry have lived in Montecito, California — about 90 miles from LA — since 2020.

Meghan's Netflix series was filmed in Montecito, and the streamer described the show as "a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of Southern California."

In the lifestyle series, the Duchess of Sussex will share recipes, gardening tips, and flower-arranging hacks with some of her famous friends, including Mindy Kaling and Roy Choi.

The show is Meghan's latest move to return to her lifestyle roots, as is her mysterious brand, American Riviera Orchard. Until she and Prince Harry announced their engagement, Meghan ran the blog The Tig and her connected Instagram page.

Meghan also returned to Instagram with a new account at the start of the year.

Wildfires continue to burn across Los Angeles, and an increase in gusts of the city's Santa Ana winds could lead to critical fire conditions in the coming days.

A complete timeline of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's relationship

  • Prince Harry and Markle Markle were set up on a blind date in July 2016.
  • They dated for over a year before announcing their engagement to the public.
  • The couple now share two children and live in California after leaving their royal duties.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle met on a blind date before eventually marrying in a lavish royal wedding ceremony.

Throughout their six years of marriage, the couple has faced scrutiny from the public over their decision to step away from the royal family and their roles as working royals in order to pursue what they called "financial independence," as well as their strained relationship with Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton.

Harry recently addressed speculation that his marriage to Meghan was on the rocks.

"Apparently we've bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We've apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well," he joked with New York Times columnist and DealBook founder Andrew Ross Sorkin during a panel at The New York Times' 2024 DealBook Summit on Wednesday, People reported. "So it's just like, 'what?'"

Here's a complete timeline of their royal relationship.

A mutual friend set them up on a blind date at Soho House's Dean Street Townhouse.

In their first sit-down interview as a couple, Meghan told the BBC in 2017 that she knew little about the prince or the royal family before the date.

"Because I'm from the States, you don't grow up with the same understanding of the royal family," she said. "I didn't know much about him, so the only thing that I had asked [our mutual friend] when she said that she wanted to set us up, was, 'Well, is he nice?' Cause if he wasn't kind, it just didn't seem like it would make sense."

In an interview with James Corden on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" in February 2021, Prince Harry recalled how serious the pair got within their first two months of dating.

"The second date I was starting to think: This is pretty special," Prince Harry told the host.

"Dating with me, or with any member of the royal family I guess, is kind of flipped upside down," he said. "All the dates become dinners or watching the TV or chatting at home. And then eventually, once you become a couple you venture out to dinners, to the cinema, and everything else. So, everything was done back to front with us."

"There were no distractions, and that was great, that was an amazing thing. We went from 0 to 60 like in the first two months," the royal added.

Harry released a statement confirming that he was dating Meghan but slammed the press coverage surrounding her and their relationship. He said that much of the coverage had been sexist and racist, as Meghan is a biracial woman.

The statement said, in part, "Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game'. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his."

November 2016: Responding to reports he was not happy with Harry's decision to speak out, Prince William issues a statement giving the couple his support.

After reports that Prince William was not happy with Harry's decision to go public about his relationship with Meghan, William disputed the claims and said he was supportive of Harry's decision to speak out about Meghan and the abuse she was receiving in the press.

"The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him," the statement read.

It's part of what makes it so special, that it's just ours. But we're happy."

She added that they had been "very quietly dating" for six months before reports of the relationship emerged.

Meghan added, "[We were] trying to roast a chicken and it just — just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee."

Harry continued, "She didn't even let me finish; she said, 'Can I say yes, can I say yes?' and then were hugs. I had the ring on my finger, and I was like, 'Can I — can I give you the ring?' She goes — 'Oh, yes the ring.'"

Celebrities, including Oprah, Serena Williams, and Elton John, were invited to the celebrations, while thousands of well-wishers lined the streets to wave at the couple, who arrived at the reception via a horse-drawn carriage.

Meghan's wedding dress was designed by Givenchy, one of her favorite designers. Her veil featured a motif of different embroidered flowers, including the California state flower. Her bouquet contained forget-me-nots, which were Princess Diana's favorite flower.

In a March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said she and Harry had actually said their vows to each other three days before the wedding at Windsor Castle.

"No one knows that, but we called the archbishop and we just said, 'This thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us.' So the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury," she said.

The Archbishop of Canterbury later confirmed the couple wasn't legally married until their ceremony at Windsor Castle.

Rather than live in Apartment 1 at Kensington Palace, the couple decided to move slightly further afield from the royal family and settled at Frogmore House.

The couple spent millions of dollars in taxpayer funds renovating the home for their growing family, which they eventually paid back in full by making a contribution to the Sovereign Grant.

Though they looked the picture of happiness from the outside looking in, Meghan would later reveal in her tell-all interview with Oprah in March 2021 that just before attending this event at Royal Albert Hall on January 16, 2019, she had expressed concern to Prince Harry over her mental health and not "[wanting] to be alive anymore."

"We had to go to an official event. We had to go to this event at the Royal Albert Hall, and a friend said, 'I know you don't look at pictures, but, oh, my God, you guys look so great...'" she said. "I zoomed in, and what I saw was the truth of what that moment was, because right before we had to leave for that, I had just had that conversation with Harry that morning, and it was the next day that I talked to the institution."

"It was like, 'These are the thoughts that I'm having in the middle of the night that are very clear ... And I'm scared, because this is very real. This isn't some abstract idea. This is methodical, and this is not who I am.' But we had to go to this event, and I remember him saying, 'I don't think you can go.' And I said, 'I can't be left alone,'" she said.

"And that picture, if you zoom in, what I see is how tightly his knuckles are gripped around mine. You can see the whites of our knuckles, because we are smiling and doing our job, but we're both just trying to hold on. And every time that those lights went down in that royal box, I was just weeping, and he was gripping my hand."

Meghan and Prince Harry broke from royal tradition by skipping the post-birth photo call on the hospital steps. But outside Windsor Castle, Harry gushed to the media about his newborn son and how proud he was of his wife.

"It's been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined," he told the media. "How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But we're both absolutely thrilled and so grateful [for] all the love and support from everybody out there. It's been amazing."

They appeared for their photo call with Archie three days later. Archie also did not receive a royal title, and details about his christening or godparents were not released publicly.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wanted their son to be as normal as possible to begin with, hence no use of the title Earl of Dumbarton," royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said at the time.

However, Meghan told Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 that the decision not to give Archie a royal title was not their own and that he was also refused security upon his birth.

It added, "Though we have continued to put on a brave face—as so many of you can relate to — I cannot begin to describe how painful it has been."

"This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."

In the couple's tell-all interview with Oprah, Prince Harry revealed that the primary reasons for their leaving their royal roles were a "lack of support and lack of understanding" from both the media and the royal family.

"I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second," she wrote. "Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband's hand. "These tactics (and those of their sister publications MailOnline and the Daily Mail) are not new; in fact, they've been going on for far too long without consequence. For these outlets, it's a game. For me and so many others, it's real life, real relationships, and very real sadness. The damage they have done and continue to do runs deep," she continued.

In the statement, she thanked Harry and others for their support.

At the time, a newspaper spokesperson told Business Insider, "We are very surprised by today's summary judgment and disappointed at being denied the chance to have all the evidence heard and tested in open court at a full trial."

"We are carefully considering the judgment's contents and will decide in due course whether to lodge an appeal," the spokesperson added.

In one part of the interview, Prince Harry compared himself to his mother, Princess Diana, and discussed the struggles they both faced as members of the royal family.

"For me, I'm just really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side because I can't begin to imagine what it must have been like for [Diana] going through this process by herself all those years ago," he said in the interview. "Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other."

Markle also opened up about how she was "naive" before entering the royal family, her struggle with mental health while serving as a senior royal, and "concerns" from the royal family about "how dark [Archie's] skin might be."

In response to the interview, Buckingham Palace in a statement on behalf of the Queen that "the whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan."

"He will be remembered as the longest reigning consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa," Prince Harry continued.

He also called the late royal a "master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right 'til the end."

"Meghan, Archie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always hold a special place for you in our hearts," he added.

In a conversation with New York Times columnist and DealBook founder Andrew Ross Sorkin during a panel at the 2024 DealBook Summit hosted by The New York Times, Harry joked about the constant reports and attention he and his wife receive from the press — positive and negative.

"Apparently we've bought or moved house 10, 12 times. We've apparently divorced maybe 10, 12 times as well," he said, laughing, People reported. "So it's just like, 'what?'"

"It's hard to keep up with, but that's why you just sort of ignore it. The people I feel most sorry about are the trolls," he continued. "Their hopes are just built and built, and it's like, 'Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,' and then it doesn't happen. So I feel sorry for them. Genuinely, I do."

Harry also said that he enjoys his life in the US and doesn't regret leaving the UK, adding it's what he believes his mother, Princess Diana, would have wanted for him.

"I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here. It's a part of my life that I never thought that I was gonna live," he told Sorkin.

"I feel as though it's the life that my mom wanted for me," he continued. "To be able to do the things I'm able to do with my kids that I undoubtedly wouldn't be able to do in the UK — it's huge. I'm hugely grateful for that."
