Ravens waive Pro Bowl receiver Diontae Johnson after drama-filled tenure

20 December 2024 at 17:24

An ugly marriage between the Baltimore Ravens and Diontae Johnson is over.

The Ravens acquired Johnson in October in hopes of jolting their already stout offense.

Johnson did anything but, and he was waived by the team Friday.

The trade was a disaster from the start. In his first game with the team, Johnson had just one catch for six yards. That turned out to be the only catch he had with the team.

The Ravens suspended Johnson earlier this month, saying he refused to play against the Philadelphia Eagles. Earlier this week, the Ravens excused him from practice.

Surely, Johnson had to be relieved to be traded by the lowly Carolina Panthers to a team that is a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Now, he appears to be on the hunt for his third team in as many months.

'JEOPARDY!' CONTESTANTS BEFUDDLED BY FINAL CLUE RIPPING JETS' SUPER BOWL DROUGHT

Johnson played in just four games for the Ravens.

The Ravens will host the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, so it speaks volumes the Ravens gave up on him roughly 24 hours before an AFC North rivalry game that could determine playoff seeding.

Baltimore didn't lose that much in the initial trade, giving up a fifth-round pick.

Johnson's role in Todd Monken's offense was questioned before the loss to the Eagles and again after he didn't enter a game when Rashod Bateman went down with a knee injury.

In 39 snaps with the Ravens, Johnson had just one catch for six yards despite being the Panthers' leading receiver through the first seven games of the season.

Cardinals’ Kyler Murray has priceless reaction to potential cold weather game vs. Panthers

19 December 2024 at 13:27

The Arizona Cardinals could be bracing for some cold weather as they head to Charlotte, North Carolina, this weekend amid a late push to make the playoffs, and Kyler Murray had a very relatable reaction when asked by reporters about it.

Fresh off of snapping a three-game losing streak with a win over the New England Patriots, Murray sat down with the media on Wednesday to discuss the team’s next challenge: playing in the cold.

Murray initially seemed indifferent about playing in the cold – that is until he found out just how cold it could get.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"No, I mean I’ve played in cold weather before. I don’t know, how cold is it supposed to be?"

One reporter responds, "35 or 40" degrees.

"S---," Murray said with a laugh.

According to FOX Weather, the mild temperatures in Charlotte are expected to dip before Sunday’s game against the Panthers with a high of 40 and a low of around 20 degrees.

VIDEO OF BUNDLED-UP DOLPHINS PLAYERS WARMING UP AT LAMBEAU FIELD GOES VIRAL AFTER THANKSGIVING DAY LOSS

The temperatures are nowhere near the frigid temps that some teams can experience playing in places like Green Bay or Buffalo this time of year, but for a team out of Arizona – it could certainly be a factor.

The Miami Dolphins failed to shut down the narrative surrounding warm-weather teams playing in the cold when they fell 30-17 to the Packers in Green Bay last month.

"Obviously, they’re coming from Miami, it’s hot there, and then when you come here and play in that cold weather, you get affected by it," Packers safety Xavier McKinney said after the game. "So I think it affected everybody on that team."

The Cardinals making the playoffs isn’t impossible, but it is a tall ask. They’ll have to win out the season and claim the division to earn a wild-card spot.

Panthers promising rookie Jonathon Brooks tears ACL 3 weeks after recovering from same injury

9 December 2024 at 13:17

The Carolina Panthers’ fear regarding their rookie running back Jonathon Brooks was confirmed on Monday, as the second-round pick re-tore his ACL, rendering him out for the remainder of the season.

It’s a sad situation for Brooks, the second-round pick out of Texas, as he tore the same right ACL he rehabbed from last year’s tear during his final season with the Longhorns, the team announced on Monday.

Brooks had only returned to the Panthers three weeks ago, but an extensive rehab will be the plan yet again after getting his ligament repaired.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

The injury was a non-contact situation, as Brooks tried to cut to his left, planting on his right foot, but he quickly went down as he felt something was wrong. It was only the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles

Brooks attempted to walk to the sideline on his own power, but he fell to the turf and needed help to get off the field.

The running back tore his ACL in November 2023 during Texas’ run to the College Football Playoff, which was a tough blow not just for the Longhorns, but Brooks’ draft stock.

Brooks totaled 1,139 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards with 11 total touchdowns over 11 games for the Longhorns prior to his injury in 2023 – his first year as a lead back in college football.

Many believed he would be a first-round selection because of his success in Austin last year, but he dropped to the second round where the Panthers snagged him No. 46 overall following the ACL injury. Teams knew he needed time to continue rehab, and the Panthers were willing to help him through that process.

There were some who questioned whether Brooks should even see the field this season, as Carolina once again had a rough go of it after finishing 2-15 last season.

But Brooks was on the field making his NFL Debut in Week 12 against the Kansas City Chiefs, though Chuba Hubbard remained the lead back for the offense.

Brooks, being used sparingly, rushed for 25 yards on eight carries prior to Sunday’s game against the Eagles.

Panthers' Bryce Young receives praise for prayer as Eagles player suffers injury

9 December 2024 at 05:27

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young nearly led his team to a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, but he received praise for one act during the game.

Eagles defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson went down with an injury in the fourth quarter. Young appeared to see Gardner-Johnson on the ground and took a moment to bow his head and pray for a moment.

NFL fans on X caught the moment and quickly posted about it.

It was a tough day for Gardner-Johnson, who initially left the game in the first quarter to be evaluated for a concussion. He then slowly walked off the field after the injury in the fourth quarter.

Young was 19-of-34 with 191 passing yards, a touchdown pass and had one interception. Carolina fell to Philadelphia 22-16.

Ultimately, Young was frustrated with the loss.

CHIEFS WIN AFC WEST FOR 9TH STRAIGHT SEASON AFTER GAME-WINNING FIELD GOAL GOES THEIR WAY

"There's no participation trophies, no consolation," he said, via the team’s website. "Coach says it all the time: it's about us, and when we're executing, we're at our best. We're able to just focus on that, and again, it's not a consolation for today, but it gives us some stuff on film to build off of, the opportunity to identify things we're doing well, how we continue to do it, how we build off of it and the same mindset of how we can improve on things.

"I think just being in the headspace is good for growth, but now it's on us to make sure we actually grow and take those steps."

Young has put together a solid redemption season after getting benched for veteran Andy Dalton at the beginning of the year.

He has 1,572 passing yards, seven touchdown passes and seven interceptions in 10 games. Carolina fell to 3-10 this season after dropping the game to Philadelphia.

Saquon Barkley sets new Eagles record in close win over Panthers

8 December 2024 at 13:36

It wasn't the beatdown many expected, but the Philadelphia Eagles still took care of business at home against the Carolina Panthers in a 22-16 win on Sunday.

And it was Saquon Barkley, an MVP candidate this season, helping the cause with yet another milestone in his inaugural Eagles campaign.

Barkley set a record with nine games of over 100 or more yards rushing this season, totaling 124 yards on 20 carries.

But, while Barkley did tally triple digits in yards, he wasn’t able to find the end zone. Instead, it was Jalen Hurts getting tush-pushed from the one-yard line to score the first touchdown of the game.

Hurts, though, would get the other touchdowns with his arm, finding DeVonta Smith for his first score in more than a month, while Grant Calcaterra, who will be getting much more playing time with Dallas Goedert on the injured reserve, scoring his first career touchdown.

KENTUCKY BETTOR PLACES $3.1 MILLION WAGER ON EAGLES TO BEAT IMPROVING PANTHERS

However, this game came down to the final seconds, as Bryce Young and the Panthers' offense had a chance to win the game after a perfect punt from the Eagles put them on their own three-yard line.

But Young quickly got out of the hole, finding Xavier Legette for 31 yards after scrambling around his end zone and almost getting sacked for a safety.

Then, a few plays later, Young spotted Adam Thielen, who had a team-high 102 yards on nine catches, on fourth-and-7 for 13 yards to keep the drive going.

On 2nd-and-4 from the Philadelphia 32-yard line, an absolutely crucial drop came off Legette’s hands, as Young got C.J. Gardner-Johnson to bite down, leaving the rookie receiver wide open near the end zone.

Legette appeared to haul in the ball and roll into the end zone for the game-tying touchdown. However, referees quickly called it incomplete, and the replay showed that the ball touched the turf during the roll.

So, instead of an extra-point attempt to take the lead, Young found himself running for his life on fourth-and-9 with no timeouts left. He attempted to find Thielen again downfield to convert, but Darius Slay swatted it away to move the Eagles’ win streak to nine straight games.

On the sports betting side, an anonymous bettor in Kentucky placed a $3.1 million bet on the Eagles, a massive favorite, to beat the Panthers. It was sweatier than they wanted, especially on that Legette play, but the bet cashed for over $400,000 in profit.

Looking at the box score, Hurts was 14-of-21 for 108 yards and his two passing touchdowns, while rushing for 61 yards on eight carries.

For the Panthers, Chuba Hubbard found the end zone on one of his 26 carries for 92 yards on the day.

Kentucky bettor places $3.1 million wager on Eagles to beat improving Panthers

7 December 2024 at 06:52

There’s no such thing as a sure bet, but one Kentucky bettor is surely hoping the Philadelphia Eagles don’t disappoint on Sunday.

The Eagles will host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday as the 12.5 point favorites, and according to ESPN, someone has placed a $3.1 million wager on the Eagles to do what they do best.

"We currently have the best Panthers [money-line] price on the board and will be big Bryce Young fans on Sunday," Circa sportsbook director Jeff Benson told the outlet.

According to the report, the bet was placed on Thursday at -700 odds. The initial bet was $1 million but the bettor asked for a bigger wager. If the Eagles win, the payout will be just under $450,000.

"I told my guys in the risk room to go to work and get some buyback on the Panthers," Circa Sports owner Derek Stevens told ESPN. "With us being in five states now, we should have the liquidity to get enough buyback to where we end up needing the Eagles."

SAQUON BARKLEY'S CRUCIAL TOUCHDOWN KEEPS EAGLES AHEAD IN WIN OVER RAVENS

Stevens added that Thursday’s wager is the largest his sportsbook has ever taken. According to ESPN, it’s also believed to be one of the largest ever placed on an NFL regular-season game.

Despite the odds, Carolina has come close to big upsets.

In their last two contests against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Panthers lost by just a three-point margin. The loss to Tampa Bay was also in overtime.

Bryce Young has also seemingly rebounded from a mid-season benching, passing for 1,062 yards, with six touchdowns and three interceptions since returning to the starting lineup in Week 8.

Steelers' George Pickens needs to 'calm down,' NFL legend says amid the star wide receiver's on-field antics

5 December 2024 at 12:20

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens has been a key part of the offense, as he leads the team in receptions and yards.

However, Pickens has been making headlines with his on-field antics.

Pickens, 23, was flagged twice for unsportsmanlike conduct in the Steelers' 44-38 win over the Cincinnati Bengals

Former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. thinks Pickens needs to calm down.

"He got to tone it down a little bit, just cause people are talking about it. And I’ve been a guy that understands when people are talking about you like that, and it’s going to be this assumed disposition about you. People are going to believe what they see or believe what some other people may say even though the context may not be all aligned," Smith said during a recent appearance on Barstool Sports’ "Pardon My Take."

Smith was known for having a flair in his 16-year playing career, as he was a trash-talker who wasn’t afraid to speak his mind.

"George is going to have to calm down, he’s a heck of a football player. He has one of the best coaches out there who really rocks with you, so if (Mike Tomlin) is telling you, ‘You need to rein it in,’ then guess what, you need to rein in it," Smith said.

MIKE TOMLIN KEEPING SPECIFICS ON HANDLING OF STEELERS STAR GEORGE PICKENS IN HOUSE: 'NOT GIVING YOU DETAILS'

Smith said the message coming from Tomlin about reining it in meant more because of the caliber of receivers he has coached in his career.

"Cause Mike T, if you think about it, Mike T has been around a lot of special wide receivers, guys who can change like that in your favor. He has also seen some of these guys haven’t managed themselves well, so he’s speaking more (as) not ‘I’m better than’ but ‘I’ve seen this movie before, and I know how the ending is,’ so you need to be careful," Smith added.

Tomlin was asked about Pickens’ penalties and if he had addressed them.

"I’m not going to give you any detail about what goes on behind the scenes in terms of his growth and development. That’s my style, and I’m going to be really consistent in it. Being transparent with you guys doesn’t necessarily help or accelerate the growth process, and that’s my agenda, not necessarily feeding the beast," Tomlin said while meeting with reporters Tuesday.

Pickens had three catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in addition to the two penalties in the Steelers' win Sunday.

Penalties aren’t the only thing that has gotten Pickens in the headlines, as the wide receiver was seen getting into it with Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II after the Steelers' 24-19 loss to the Browns.

After the Hail Mary pass from quarterback Russell Wilson fell incomplete, cameras showed Pickens and Newsome getting into it near the stands. Pickens was then shown being held back by two members of stadium security.

The Steelers play the Browns on Sunday, where all eyes will be on Pickens to see what he does next.

Panthers' Sam Franklin Jr restrained from running to Bucs locker room, sends threat to player in video

2 December 2024 at 13:35

Carolina Panthers captain Sam Franklin Jr. had to be restrained from running toward the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' locker room following an overtime loss to his team's NFC South rival.

Franklin was specifically frustrated with Bucs linebacker Jose Ramirez, who he called out in a video that has now gone viral on social media.

"Hey, tell 33 imma see his a--," Franklin was heard yelling toward other Bucs players. "On my grave, boy!"

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

It’s unclear what exactly led Franklin to get this angry, as a Panthers staffer had to push him back toward their locker room.

But the animosity between these rivals was also seen in a separate video where veteran Bucs wide receiver Sterling Shepard was shouting expletives toward the Panthers’ locker room immediately after Franklin’s outburst.

RUSSELL WILSON COOKS FOR STEELERS. KIRK COUSINS ON THIN ICE WITH FALCONS?

All of this transpired after a thrilling end to this rivalry matchup, which needed extra time to find a winner. The Bucs would eventually kick a game-winning field goal for the 26-23 victory, but it appeared the Panthers were going to win it all when they got the ball following Chase McLaughlin’s missed 55-yarder earlier in overtime.

However, Chuba Hubbard, who has had a breakout season with Carolina and has been one of their driving forces on offense despite their 3-9 record, fumbled in Tampa Bay territory, and Yaya Diaby recovered the loose ball to give the Bucs another crack at winning the game.

Rachaad White made it so with a long run to get deep into Panthers’ territory, and McLaughlin didn’t miss his second chance, this time from 30 yards out, to win the game.

With the victory, the Bucs are now in a first-place tie for the NFC South lead with the Atlanta Falcons, who lost to the Los Angeles Chargers earlier Sunday.

We saw tons of skirmishes and altercations this weekend in the college football world during their rivalry week, but as the regular season enters the homestretch, the stakes of each game matter that much more.

Clearly, the heat of competition on the field spilled over into the tunnel for this fierce rivalry.

Chiefs lineman Tershawn Wharton catches young fan after falling over barrier at Panthers' stadium

29 November 2024 at 08:25

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton had the catch of the day in the team’s narrow win of the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Wharton, 26, was walking off the field at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina after Spencer Schrader knocked in a 31-yard field goal as time expired to solidify the Chiefs’ 30-27 victory over the Panthers.

Fans near the tunnel where the Chiefs were exiting gathered around the barrier, including a young fan wearing a Nick Bolton jersey.

In a video shared on social media, Bolton appeared to be approaching the group of fans as he took his game-worn gloves off with the intention of giving them to the young Chiefs fan. That’s when the young fan leans out and falls over the barrier.

Reacting quickly, Wharton ran over and appeared to make an attempt to catch the child.

CHIEFS SQUANDER LATE DOUBLE-DIGIT LEAD, BUT SURVIVE IN WALK-OFF FASHION AGAINST PANTHERS

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the child sustained any injuries from the fall, but Wharton appeared to pick him up back over the barrier with no issues. The young fan also appeared to have a glove in his hand when he was brought back up.

A stadium staff member can be seen in the video telling fans to get back after the child fell down.

"Go back to your seats," the man can be heard saying. "Everybody back to your seats! This kid just fell. Back to your seats."

Wharton appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" to discuss the incident. He said he had been walking over to hand his gloves over to fans shouting his name when he saw the kid fall over. He then rushed to grab the child around the back of his shirt to break his fall.

"I just had to kind of push him into the stands a little bit to make sure he didn’t hit [the ground] too hard."

He said he hopes to bring the young child out to a game in the future."

Wharton, a two-time Super Bowl champion, is playing in his fifth season with the Chiefs. He registered two tackles in Sunday’s win, which put the Chiefs back on track after suffering their first loss of the season to the Buffalo Bills. the previous week.

Chiefs squander late double-digit lead, but survive in walk-off fashion against Panthers

24 November 2024 at 13:37

Sunday should have been easy for the Kansas City Chiefs. It was anything but.

In fact, they were in danger of a serious upset. Yet, because they are the Chiefs, they survived.

After squandering a double-digit lead late, the Chiefs walked it off against the Carolina Panthers for a 30-27 victory.

Kansas City had a 20-9 lead at halftime, and still led by 11 at the start of the fourth quarter. But the Panthers chipped away and played stout defense.

With less than two minutes to go, Chuba Hubbard scored a touchdown to cut their deficit to two, and after the Chiefs committed a defensive pass interference on the two-point conversion, Hubard took another handoff into the end zone to tie the game with 1:46 to go.

But as we’ve learned plenty of times, you never want to give the Chiefs any time. They quickly got into field goal range, as Patrick Mahomes scrambled for 34 yards. Several plays later, Spencer Shrader drilled the 31-yard field goal as time expired.

PANTHERS ROOKIE TIGHT END CARTED OFF FIELD AFTER FALLING ON HEAD

The Chiefs may have improved to 10-1, but they are certainly lucky to be in this spot. Just two weeks ago, they blocked a potential game-winning field goal against the Denver Broncos.

They have not played sharp, again, but the reigning back-to-back champions keep on getting the job done.

Mahomes went 27-for-37 with three touchdowns – DeAndre Hopkins caught the third.

Kansas City will host the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday – they beat them 27-20 earlier this season after losing both games against them last year.

Panthers rookie tight end carted off field after falling on head

24 November 2024 at 12:16

There was a scary moment in Charlotte on Sunday as a rookie on the Panthers was carted off the field.

Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was taken off the field after falling on his head following a tackle.

Sanders caught a pass from Bryce Young and was fighting for a first down when he was hit.

Sanders began to flip forward, and then the crown of his helmet made contact with the turf.

He raised his arms as he was being taken off the field.

The Panthers had not posted an immediate update on Sanders' status, other than that it was a neck injury and he had been transported to a local hospital.

Sanders was a two-time First-team nod for Texas – he was facing his former college teammate Xavier Worthy, who was drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 21-year-old was the 101st pick in the draft, a fourth-round selection. He recorded 1,295 yards on 99 receptions in his final two seasons with the Longhorns.

The Chiefs had a 20-9 lead at halftime thanks to two touchdowns by Noah Gray.

Sanders had started five of 10 games this year – entering Sunday, he had 26 catches for 253 yards and a touchdown.
