A pro tennis player without a clothing sponsor bought 'vintage' dresses online for the Australian Open: 'I've found them on eBay'

  • Destanee Aiava wore vintage tennis outfits she found on eBay at the 2025 Australian Open.
  • She sported replicas of dresses worn by past champions, including Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic.
  • Aiava made it through three rounds of qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw.

If you've been following Week 1 of the 2025 Australian Open, you've probably noticed a lot of the same outfits.

Adidas has its players kitted out in bold red for the first major of the year, known as "The Happy Slam." Many of Nike's athletes, including Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz, are wearing green and yellow.

It's not uncommon for tennis players to wear the same kit throughout the entirety of a tournament due to their endorsement contracts.

But for qualifier Destanee Aiava, who doesn't have a clothing sponsor, her on-court styles were completely up to her — and she chose to pay homage to past champions Maria Sharapova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Ana Ivanovic by wearing their iconic looks from the late 2000s and early 2010s.

She couldn't get the gear through Nike or Adidas, though. Aiava bought the dresses secondhand online.

"I've found them on eBay — for double the price that they were originally for," she told tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg. "But yeah, I just like looking on Depop, Facebook Marketplace, eBay to find the old, vintage outfits that I loved when I was little."

Ranked just inside the top 200, the 24-year-old Australian-Samoan had to battle through three rounds of qualifying rounds to earn a slot in the main draw.

For her first match in qualies, she wore a light pink Nike dress that Sharapova sported at the 2012 US Open.

For round two, Aiava got her hands on a pink and purple number worn by Ana Ivanovic at the 2010 US Open.

She wore a different pink Ivanovic dress for her third-round match, which propelled her into the main draw of the AO.

Heading into the first round of the main draw match, BBC asked Aiava about her outfit choice. She said she'd found one of Facebook: "I might go pick that up. It's only $35, which is a steal."

BBC didn't confirm whether she purchased it. Aiava walked on court in a sky blue Adidas dress previously worn by Caroline Wozniacki at the 2013 US Open, and earned her very first Grand Slam main-draw win. Advancing to the round of 64 earned her $200,000 AUD ($124,280 USD).

"It means that I can bring someone to travel with this year, and I can afford to actually go to all the tournaments that I want to," Aiava said after the comeback victory. "I struggle traveling on my own. The fact that I get to bring my fiancé with me and hopefully one of my family members to the big ones, it makes a world of a difference."

In what would be her last match at the 2025 Australian Open, Aiava wore another Sharapova number while battling American Danielle Collins, who eventually prevailed in three sets.

"It was actually from one of the girls that I used to play tennis with when I was little," Aiava told 9News of the fit. "She reached out and offered to lend me a dress and I actually ran out of options as well, so I'm so lucky."

Aiava told BBC that she's "hoping to get a sponsor." But in the meantime, "I'm loving picking whatever I want to wear and buying whatever I want."

She told 9News that if she continues the tradition, she'd like to eventually bring back a Serena Williams piece. However, it was out of her budget for this event: "They are quite hard to find and quite expensive."

American tennis star Taylor Fritz pledges to donate Australian Open prize money to LA wildfires relief fund

17 January 2025 at 08:45

American tennis star Taylor Fritz is the latest athlete to contribute to the relief funds for the wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area.

Fritz, 27, said on Thursday that he is donating the prize money he earned for his first-round victory at the Australian Open – about $82,000 – toward the relief funds.

"I mean, I feel like it’s really the least I can do," Fritz said.

Fritz was born in Rancho Santa Fe, California, and is still based in the state.

"Obviously, ‘SoCal’ has been my home forever. I still spend a lot of time in LA, but I lived in LA for quite a while. I have friends impacted, family not so much. I had some family have to evacuate. The house that my brothers grew up in burnt down. Obviously, they’re not living there anymore," Fritz said after reaching the third round at Melbourne Park with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 victory over qualifier Cristian Garín of Chile.

"A lot of people are affected by it. I feel like if you’re in a place to help, then you should."

Authorities have not determined a cause for the major blazes in what is on track to become the nation’s costliest fire disaster, with at least 27 people dead and thousands of homes destroyed.

AMERICAN TENNIS PRO DANIELLE COLLINS THANKS AUSTRALIAN OPEN FANS FOR ‘PAYING MY BILLS’ AFTER GETTING HECKLED

Fritz is not the only tennis player with connections to the Los Angeles area who is competing at the Australian Open.

Naomi Osaka, a four-time major champion, said she sent someone to retrieve her 1 ½ year-old daughter’s birth certificate from their California home in case it got caught up in the fires.

Tristan Boyer, a 23-year-old from California, who had a first-round win but lost Thursday, said his father had to evacuate their house in Altadena.

"We have friends and family who are homeless now. It’s really, really devastating to see," Boyer said. "Obviously, trying to do what I need to do to prep and play tennis, but control what I can control in this moment. But it’s hard for sure."

Fritz, the No. 4 ranked player in the tournament, will take on Gaël Monfils on Saturday for a berth in the fourth round, but his mind will still be on what is happening back home.

"I just want everyone to obviously stay safe," Fritz said.

"It's just insane what happened."

American tennis pro Danielle Collins thanks Australian Open fans for ‘paying my bills’ after getting heckled

16 January 2025 at 09:20

American tennis pro Danielle Collins isn’t making any new friends in Australia this week, and she’s fine with that.

Collins, a finalist in the 2022 Australian Open, advanced to the third round of this year’s Grand Slam after defeating Australia’s own Destanee Aiava on Thursday, but her victory was met with a harsh reaction by the home crowd.

After dealing with the crowd’s boos for most of the match, Collins blew kisses to fans and egged them on as soon as she won match point.

"It was a tough crowd and I just figured if I’m going to be out here, I better take home that bigger paycheck," Collins said after the match in an on-court interview.  "So yeah, thanks for the paycheck Australia."

"It’s a pretty amazing feeling as an athlete because the people that dislike you or hate you pay your bills," she continued. "So that’s a really rewarding feeling to be out here, and it just feels like a really great day."

Collins defeated Aiava 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2 across a nearly 2 1/2 hour match.

During her post game presser with the media, Collins doubled down on her reaction to the crowd, adding that the "energy" of fans motivates her – regardless of who they cheer for.

"One of the greatest things about being a professional athlete is the people that don’t like you and the people that hate you, they actually pay your bills. It’s kind of a cool concept… I just remind myself every day when I have that kind of stuff, they’re paying my bills. Every person that’s bought a ticket to come out here and heckle me or do what they do, it’s all going toward the Danielle Collins’ fund."

Collins quipped that she likes to take "five-star vacations" with her friends, and that her earnings from the Australian Open will go toward their next trip.

"We like boats – we like big boats. We like yachts. We’ll post about it and let you guys know how it goes."

Daniil Medvedev smashes racket, camera during fiery outburst as he avoids Australian Open upset

14 January 2025 at 12:18

Top-ranked tennis pro Daniil Medvedev destroyed a camera and his tennis racket as he faced what could have been a monumental upset in the Australian Open by a wild-card entry ranked 418th in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament on Tuesday.

Medvedev’s outburst came during the third set when he lost a 13-stroke back-and-forth with Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej to fall behind 40-15. With Medvedev up at the net, Samrej’s shot clipped the net to go beyond Medvedev’s reach in a direction he clearly could not have anticipated.

Then Medvedev, a three-time Australian Open finalist, unleashed his anger on the net, smashing his racket several times.

In the process, Medvedev destroyed his racket and a camera that was situated directly in his path of destruction.

Staff quickly rushed to replace the broken camera and clean up the debris on the court. Medvedev was given a code violation warning for racket abuse from the chair umpire.

COCO GAUFF DELIVERS 6-WORD MESSAGE FOR THOSE DEALING WITH LA WILDFIRES AFTER AUSTRALIAN OPEN WIN

Medvedev dropped the set to trail 2-1, and it looked as though the No. 5 ranked player would face elimination. But Medvedev quickly turned things around to win the following two sets 6-1, 6-2, and advanced to the second round.

"In the end of last year, this match, I probably would have lost it," Medvedev said after the match. "New year, new energy."

Medvedev is hoping to start out the 2025 season with a win in Melbourne. A three-time finalist, including in last year’s tournament, Medvedev has never won the Australian Open. His biggest challenger will be Novak Djokovic, who has won the most Australian Open titles than any other men’s player with 10.

Coco Gauff delivers 6-word message for those dealing with LA wildfires after Australian Open win

13 January 2025 at 04:35

American tennis star Coco Gauff sent a message to Los Angeles residents dealing with the devastating wildfires plaguing the area over the last week.

Gauff defeated Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Australian Open on Sunday. She then wrote some words of encouragement on the camera lens near the court.

"Stay strong LA," she wrote. "Thank you firefighters!"

The blazes in Los Angeles have killed at least two dozen people, with the death toll expected to rise each day.

Gauff is looking for her second career Grand Slam title after winning the WTA Finals in November. Her best finish at the Australian Open came last year when she reached the semifinals. However, she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.

The 2023 U.S. Open winner wore a Marvel-inspired bodysuit and skirt as she cruised to the win over Kenin.

"I knew going in it was going to be difficult, but you know I’m happy with how I played," she said of the one-hour, 20-minute win over Kenin, who at No. 81 is a much tougher opponent than her ranking suggests.

"I mean (I) could serve better, but like on that side I was struggling to see the ball," Guaff said, pointing to one baseline on the main show court that was bathed in sun. "So I’m just happy that I was able to manage through that."

Gauff will play Jodie Burrage in the next round.

Novak Djokovic announces he has hired longtime rival Andy Murray to be next coach

23 November 2024 at 12:38

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray became rivals as they played against each other on some of tennis’s biggest stages.

Now, Djokovic and Murray will be working together. The pair announced on social media that Murray will be Djokovic’s coach during the offseason and at least through the Australian Open

"We played each other since we were boys — 25 years of being rivals, of pushing each other beyond our limits. We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us game-changers, risk-takers, history-makers," Djokovic said on a video he posted to social media.

"I thought our story may be over. Turns out, it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome on board, Coach — Andy Murray."

In March, after winning 12 Grand Slam titles in six years with coach Goran Ivaniseiv, Djokovic split from his longtime coach and has not hired anyone permanently since.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion had a down season in 2024, not winning a Grand Slam or any tour-level tournament. Djokovic’s crowning achievement was winning a gold medal for Serbia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Murray, 37, retired from competitive play after the Olympics in July and is looking forward to beginning his next chapter in tennis.

"I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the offseason, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open," Murray said in a statement released by his management team. "I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals."

Djokovic, also 37, and Murray were born a week apart in May 1987 and faced off 36 times in their professional career. Djokovic holds a 25-11 record over Murray, including Djokovic holding an 11-8 in finals, and 8-2 in Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic beat Murray in the Australian Open four times; in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016.

Murray won two of three of his Grand Slams with Djokovic as his opponent, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2013 Wimbledon final, when Murray became the first British man in 77 years to win the singles championship at the All England Club.

Next year’s Australian Open starts on Jan. 12.
