Coco Gauff calls out 'haters' who voiced support for Spotify after she shared her Apple Music Replay list

6 December 2024 at 02:53

American tennis star Coco Gauff recently unveiled which music artists and albums she played the most this year. She used Apple Music Replay, which provides users with a roundup of music they have listened to over the past year.

According to a post shared on Gauff's social media platform, the 2023 U.S. Open tennis champion frequently streams music by Beyoncé, Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean. In October, Tyler the Creator famously name-dropped Gauff in his single "Thought I Was Dead," which was featured on his studio album "Chromakopia."

Guaff, who is currently the world's third-ranked women's tennis player, fended off criticism following her Apple Music Replay unveiling. "Why is everyone an apple music hater???" the 20-year-old questioned in a post to X on Thursday.

The service lists top songs and top artists. It also calculates the number of minutes and more. Spotify does offer a similar service called Wrapped.

Gauff proceeded to list some of the benefits Apple's audio and video streaming service provides, before suggesting Spotify users have an issue with the competing streamer.

"we get to see our top albums, top genres, have spatial audio, and get a monthly replay report on top of the yearly one. I like spotify but the fan base can’t stand to see an apple music screenshot. you would think I killed their dog chile," Gauff continued.

When away from the tennis court, Gauff has spent some time attending live music events. Last month, she was spotted at the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles.

"It was such an easy decision for me," the tennis star said last year as part of the announcement about her partnership with Bose. "I listen to music every day, but especially in competition. I always have my headphones on because it puts me in the zone and allows me to focus."

Last month, Gauff defeated Zhen Qinwen to secure the Women's Tennis Association Finals title.

Martina Navratilova 'mad' that Republicans are more outspoken than Dems about trans athletes in girls sports

4 December 2024 at 13:47

Martina Navratilova has long been outspoken about transgender athletes in girls' and women's sports.

In a new post on X, the tennis legend said she was "mad" that Republicans have tackled the nationwide controversy, rather than Democrats, the party which she has aligned with.

Navratilova shared a photo of Congresswoman Nancy Mace, R-S.C., with members of Gays Against Groomers, holding up a shirt that read "Save Girls' Sports."

"And I am so mad that the Republicans captured this issue – shame on all the elected Democrats who keep silent on this!!! #whataboutthewomen," she wrote on X.

This is not the first time Navratilova has ripped the left for their different views on the issue. The tennis legend appeared at the Independent Women's Forum's "Take Back Title IX" rally in June as she and other prominent women athletes pushed back on the Biden administration’s Title IX rewrite.

Navratilova said that she and her fellow Democrats tried to make the playing field fair for transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports. However, when she did more research, she determined it was an impossible task.

TRANS FEMALE WEIGHTLIFTER TAKES USA POWERLIFTING LAWSUIT TO MINNESOTA SUPREME COURT

"Initially, being the Democrats and the women that we are for the most part, we in this group were trying to find every single possible way to include trans-identified men, males who identify as women, into women’s sports," she said. "And the more we try to find a way to mitigate the advantage, to handicap, to somehow to include, the more we figured out it’s not possible. It’s not possible to do it in a fair way and here we are in a much different position.

"As I got deeper into the issue, I also saw the connection between women’s sex-based spaces and women’s sports – they are totally interconnected, and I’m sure the swimmers at Penn could tell you all about that. You heard about Lia Thomas, right?"

"Now, it’s, ‘Oh, you’re a homophobe.’ Go figure. I’ve been out since ’81, yeah, I’m a homophobe," she said, rolling her eyes. "‘You’re a bigot, you’re a transphobe, you’re a Nazi, you’re a fascist, you’re a communist,’ everything and everything in between. And this is coming from the left. I am the left! My people are turning on me. They’re turning on us, women, who speak up for women’s sex-based rights."

Navratilova recently called Italian sprinter Valentina Petrillo, who competed in the Paralympics as a trans woman, a "pathetic cheater." In March, she made a plea to "keep women's sports female."

Tennis legend Serena Williams fires back at skin-bleaching accusations

3 December 2024 at 05:35

Tennis legend Serena Williams fired back at accusations she had been bleaching her skin on Monday in an Instagram Live video.

The allegations popped up after the 23-time Grand Slam tennis champion shared a video of herself at a school event with her husband and two children, according to People magazine

"And then I put just that neutral color, that is actually my skin color, and no, for you haters out there, I do not bleach my skin," Williams said in the video. "There is a thing called sunlight, and in that sunlight, you get different colors."

Williams said she was wearing "stage makeup" when she filmed the video that sparked the remarks.

"Yes, I’m calling you out on this because it is ridiculous," she added. "Everyone’s like, ‘Oh, she bleached her skin.’ I’m a dark, Black woman, and I love who I am, and I love how I look."

Williams said she does not judge those who do bleach their skin.

"But that’s what this world is about, and I stay in my lane — the non-judgy one, and I keep it. But no, I actually don’t bleach my skin, so can we just kinda clear that up?"

Williams has fully embraced retirement in recent years but has had some serious issues to deal with.

The 43-year-old revealed in October she had a massive cyst removed from her neck.

"It kinda hurt coming out. Obviously, I went under for it, but they had to put a drain in it because it was so much," she said in a TikTok video. "But everything worked out, and I feel really happy to have worked with some great doctors."

Tennis star Iga Swiatek accepts 1-month suspension for banned substance

28 November 2024 at 10:48

Women’s tennis star Iga Swiatek, the winner of five Grand Slams, has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Thursday.

Swiatek, who has been ranked No. 1 in the world for most of the past two seasons, tested positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication better known as TMZ, in an out-of-competition test back in August.

The ITIA accepted her explanation that the results weren’t intentional, saying it was caused by contamination of a nonprescription medication, melatonin, which she uses for issues with jet lag and sleeping.

The ITIA stated that Swiatek’s level of fault was "at the lowest end of the range for no significant fault or negligence."

Swiatek was previously suspended from Sept. 12 to Oct. 4, missing three tournaments over that span — Korea Open, China Open and Wuhan Open — though she said at the time it was due to personal reasons.

Swiatek has only eight days remaining on the punishment, which will be served while there’s no competition.

So, she will be cleared to return on Monday.

Along with the suspension, Swiatek has to forfeit $158,944 of prize money from the Cincinnati Open, which she played in after failing the test. She ultimately lost in the semifinals.

In an Instagram video, Swiatek reacted to the ITIA’s decision, calling it the "worst experience of my life."

"In the last two and a half months, I was subject to strict ITIA proceedings, which confirmed my innocence," Swiatek said in the video. "The only positive doping test in my career, showing unbelievably low level of a banned substance I've never heard about before, put everything I've worked so hard for my entire life into question.

"Both me and my team had to deal with tremendous stress and anxiety. Now everything has been carefully explained, and with a clean slate I can go back to what I love most."

Another high-profile doping case came in tennis with Jannik Sinner, who failed two tests for a steroid in March. He was eventually cleared in August right before the US Open, which he went on to win for his second Grand Slam.

Novak Djokovic announces he has hired longtime rival Andy Murray to be next coach

23 November 2024 at 12:38

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray became rivals as they played against each other on some of tennis’s biggest stages.

Now, Djokovic and Murray will be working together. The pair announced on social media that Murray will be Djokovic’s coach during the offseason and at least through the Australian Open

"We played each other since we were boys — 25 years of being rivals, of pushing each other beyond our limits. We had some of the most epic battles in our sport. They called us game-changers, risk-takers, history-makers," Djokovic said on a video he posted to social media.

"I thought our story may be over. Turns out, it has one final chapter. It’s time for one of my toughest opponents to step into my corner. Welcome on board, Coach — Andy Murray."

In March, after winning 12 Grand Slam titles in six years with coach Goran Ivaniseiv, Djokovic split from his longtime coach and has not hired anyone permanently since.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion had a down season in 2024, not winning a Grand Slam or any tour-level tournament. Djokovic’s crowning achievement was winning a gold medal for Serbia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games

Murray, 37, retired from competitive play after the Olympics in July and is looking forward to beginning his next chapter in tennis.

"I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the offseason, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open," Murray said in a statement released by his management team. "I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals."

Djokovic, also 37, and Murray were born a week apart in May 1987 and faced off 36 times in their professional career. Djokovic holds a 25-11 record over Murray, including Djokovic holding an 11-8 in finals, and 8-2 in Grand Slam tournaments.

Djokovic beat Murray in the Australian Open four times; in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2016.

Murray won two of three of his Grand Slams with Djokovic as his opponent, the 2012 U.S. Open and the 2013 Wimbledon final, when Murray became the first British man in 77 years to win the singles championship at the All England Club.

Next year’s Australian Open starts on Jan. 12.
