  • Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have two children.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are raising Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in the US.
  • Archie and Lilibet didn't have prince and princess titles when they were born.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children might be royals, but their childhoods differ from those of other British princes and princesses.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been raising Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 3, in California following their step back from the monarchy, giving their children almost entirely private childhoods that most royals don't get.

Here's everything to know about Archie and Lilibet.

Prince Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

Archie was born May 6, 2019, at the Portland Hospital in London, just shy of a year after Harry and Meghan's May 2018 wedding. The couple announced his birth on their Sussex Royal Instagram account, which they stopped using in 2020, with a graphic that read, "It's a boy!"

"We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019," the post said. "Their Royal Highnesses' son weighs 7lbs. 3oz."

"The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives," the statement said.

Harry and Meghan broke tradition after Archie's birth, choosing not to do a photocall when they left the hospital as Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, did when their children were born. Instead, they introduced Archie to the world with a photocall at St. George's Hall at Windsor Castle on May 8. They announced his name via Instagram the same day.

In 2020, the couple revealed Archie's name was inspired by the Greek word "arche," which means "source of action." They named their charitable organization Archewell for the same reason. Meanwhile, Harrison traditionally means "son of Harry," making it a natural choice for Archie's middle name.

Archie was seventh in the line of succession for the British throne when he was born, but he moved up to the sixth spot after Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022. Archie was christened in July 2019 at the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle, with members of the royal family, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, in attendance.

While they were still working royals, Archie joined his parents on a royal tour of Africa in September 2019 when he was just 4 months old, meeting Archbishop Desmond Tutu during his first royal engagement. Meghan later revealed Archie's nursery caught fire during the tour, though he wasn't hurt.

Harry and Meghan also shared a candid holiday card that featured a close-up of baby Archie in December 2019.

Harry and Meghan decided to keep Archie out of the public eye since they stepped back as senior royals and relocated to the US in 2020. He hasn't joined them for public appearances, living out his childhood privately in Montecito, California.

The couple shared a few glimpses of Archie in their 2022 Netflix docuseries "Harry & Meghan," and he has appeared in a handful of Meghan's Instagram posts since January 2025. Her posts don't include his face, though.

Princess Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor

Meghan and Harry shared they were expecting their second child in February 2021, revealing in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that they were having a daughter. In an essay for The New York Times, Meghan said she had a miscarriage between her pregnancies with Archie and Lilibet in July 2020.

Harry and Meghan welcomed Lili on June 4, 2021, at 11:40 a.m., as the couple shared in a statement on their Archewell website two days after her birth.

In the statement, the pair said that Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California. Lilibet is the first member of the British royal family to be born in the United States.

At the time of her birth, she was eighth in the line of succession, but as of 2022, Lilibet is seventh in line for the British throne.

Harry and Meghan said that Lili's name celebrates her grandmother and great-grandmother. Lilibet was Queen Elizabeth's family nickname, while Lili's middle name honors Princess Diana, who died when Harry was 12.

"On June 4th, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili," the couple said in their statement. "She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe. Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not release a photo of Lili's face alongside the announcement. They shared the first public photo of her face on their 2021 Christmas card.

Lilibet was christened in the US in March 2023 during an intimate ceremony performed by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, which the royal family didn't attend. Tyler Perry, who allowed Meghan and Harry to stay in his house when they first moved to California in 2020, is her godfather.

Harry and Meghan released another photo of Lilibet for her first birthday, sharing a snap of the young royal at Windsor Castle's Frogmore Cottage.

The Sussex family traveled to the United Kingdom in June 2022 for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. During the visit, Lilibet met her great-grandmother for the first and only time. She also met her grandfather, King Charles.

Like her brother, Lili made minor cameos in "Harry & Meghan" and appears on her mother's Instagram, though her face isn't visible in the posts. Meghan also released a recipe for Chantilly Lili, a dessert named after her daughter, in April 2025.

Archie and Lili's titles changed after Queen Elizabeth II died

Archie and Lilibet didn't have prince and princess titles when they were born, instead being referred to as Master Archie and Miss Lilibet on the line of succession.

The Letters Patent, a royal decree made by King George V in 1917, states that only the current monarch's children and grandchildren and the children of the Prince of Wales can use a prince or princess title.

At the time of their births, Archie and Lili weren't the grandchildren of the sovereign or children of the Prince of Wales, making them ineligible for prince or princess titles.

However, Meghan also said in her and Harry's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey that while she was pregnant with Archie, some members of the royal family "were saying they didn't want him to be a prince," which she indicated may have been because Archie is biracial.

Following the interview, Buckingham Palace said in a statement, "The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan."

"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning," it said. "While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately."

After Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022, King Charles III ascended the throne, making Archie and Lili the grandchildren of the British monarch. As such, they automatically inherited prince and princess titles, per the Letters Patent.

Meghan and Harry referred to one of their children with their new title in March 2023, as a spokesperson for the couple called their daughter "Princess Lilibet Diana" in a statement to Business Insider about Lili's christening.

On March 9, Buckingham Palace updated the line of succession on its website, officially calling Harry's children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet for the first time.

Although their titles and place in the line of succession changed, Archie and Lili aren't publicly known to have a relationship with the rest of the royal family. Harry and Meghan's relationship with the royal family is still strained, and in a May 2, 2025, interview with BBC News, Harry said his father isn't speaking to him due to disputes over security for the Sussexes when they're in the UK.

3 ways you're making your kitchen look cheap, according to interior designers

It's easy to make mistakes when you're trying to make your kitchen look luxurious.

  • It can be easy to miss the mark when trying to make your kitchen look luxurious.
  • Interior designers said dull color schemes and the wrong lighting can make your kitchen look cheap.
  • It's also important to pay attention to details like cabinet handles.

If you've ever watched a home improvement show, you know kitchens can make or break the luxury feel of a house.

It can be easy to miss the mark when trying to create a luxury kitchen, so Business Insider spoke to a couple of interior designers about common ways people make their kitchens look cheap.

Here's what they had to say.

Dull colors and lighting

The neutral colors many people gravitate toward for modern kitchens can look cheap, according to experts.

Charlotte Eustace, an interior designer based in the UK and the founder of Eustace Studio, told BI she especially dislikes millennial gray kitchens.

"It just looks so cheap," she said, as gray can look "cold" in a kitchen. Harsh lighting can create the same impact.

"If your lighting is very cold or if you're doing all neutral but everything feels very cold and has a cold undertone, I think that can really cheapen it," she said. "Generally, the spaces that feel the most luxurious and welcoming are warmer spaces."

Juliana Ghani, an interior designer from Minneapolis, tries to avoid too much gray, black, white, or "anything that looks sterile" in kitchens. She said LED light bulbs are a huge no-no for her in particular.

"It looks like an operating room when you have those blue LED lights on your island," she said, adding that warm lighting is "the easiest way to make your kitchen look richer and homey."

If you want to bring more color into your kitchen, Ghani said darker tones, like aubergine, olive green, and burgundy, are trending for 2025.

The design is in the details

As Ghani told BI, luxury kitchens are designed to be aesthetically pleasing, whereas a more basic kitchen makes the appliances the focal point of the room.

"I think a mistake people make when designing a kitchen, especially an open-concept kitchen, is that they let the appliances dominate the space," Ghani said. "In a luxury kitchen, we would have paneled appliances, integrated hardware, or even different finishes on the actual appliances that kind of hide them in a way."

"A row of stainless steel appliances, pretty much, is not giving luxury," she said.

Eustace agreed, saying that the details of a kitchen can make a big difference to how your eye perceives the overall space. For instance, the handles you choose for your cabinets, the stone you select for your countertops, or even the outlet panels you use can make the space feel less luxurious.

"A kitchen can be really nice, and then if I see cup handles or something, immediately I'm just like, 'Oh gosh, that really just cheapens the whole feel of it,'" Eustace said, referring to curved handles that don't look high-end.

Upgrading your hardware is an easy way to give your kitchen a luxurious feel, though. Ghani recommends brushed chrome, brushed nickel, or lacquered brass.

Too much on the counters

Ghani said that too many items on your counters can look "messy" or "cluttered."

On the flip side, cookbooks or appliances you use daily on your countertops can help a space look lived in. Eustace agreed, saying you don't want your kitchen to look uninviting.

"I think there's an obsession these days with having everything hidden, as if it's like a showroom the whole time and no one lives there," Eustace said. "I don't think people should be afraid to have things out or, you know, have a little bit of mess or clutter."

"Things that you're actually using every day, and just signs of life, don't make it look cheap," she added, though she said microwaves sitting on a counter aren't aesthetically pleasing in her opinion.

"It has to make sense for you," Ghani agreed about what sits on your countertops. "It would be obnoxious if you eat toast every day and you have to take out your toaster."

"If you're doing a custom kitchen or you're remodeling, a lot of times we try to fit in a butler's pantry or a walk-in pantry where you can put in a lot of those countertop appliances, your sugar, and your salt and pepper," Ghani added.

Most importantly, both designers advised people not to be afraid to bring their own personality to their spaces, as a homey kitchen is the best kitchen.

Everything to know about Prince William and Kate Middleton's only daughter, Princess Charlotte

  • Princess Charlotte turned 10 in May.
  • As Prince William and Kate Middleton's second child, she's third in line for the British throne.
  • Although her life is mostly private, Charlotte shows peeks of her personality at royal engagements.

The roles of "heir" and "spare" have haunted royal siblings for centuries.

The very existence of secondborn children in the British royal family is tied to a crown they'll ideally never hold, as they serve as backups to the direct heirs to the throne.

Still, spares can play a critical role in the monarchy, as was the case for King George VI, who became monarch in 1936 after his brother abdicated. Even as it adapts to the modern world, the heir and spare dynamic continues to shape the monarchy, as evidenced by the title — and contents — of Prince Harry's 2023 memoir.

In the latest generation of royals, Princess Charlotte is the spare to Prince George's heir. However, at just 10, Charlotte is already breaking the mold she was born into, charting a new path for the royals.

Here's everything to know about Princess Charlotte.

Princess Charlotte joins the royal family

In a press release on September 8, 2014, Kensington Palace announced that Kate Middleton was expecting her and Prince William's second child. The statement also said that Kate had hyperemesis gravidarum, as she did with her first pregnancy, and would be missing an engagement in Oxford that day as a result.

Charlotte was born on May 2, 2015, at 8:34 a.m., at the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in London, just like Prince George, Prince William, and Prince Harry were.

William and Kate debuted their daughter to the world during a photocall on the hospital's steps the same day she was born. Kate posed for photos on the hospital's steps after each of her children's births, following in Princess Diana's footsteps.

Charlotte's full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, and at the time of her birth, her title was Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles, her grandfather's name. Her middle names nod to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her late grandmother, Princess Diana.

At her birth, Charlotte was fourth in the royal line of succession, behind her grandfather, father, and older brother.

Queen Elizabeth II ensured Charlotte's position in the line wouldn't be affected by her gender through the Succession to the Crown Act in 2013. The act changed a long-standing rule that male siblings superseded their female siblings' position in the line to the throne. If it hadn't been passed, Prince Louis' birth in 2018 would have moved Charlotte down the line of succession.

After Queen Elizabeth died in 2022, King Charles III made William the Prince of Wales, so his daughter's title became Princess Charlotte of Wales. Likewise, she moved up to third in line for the throne after her great-grandmother's death.

Princess Charlotte's royal life

According to the royal family's website, the princess was christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham in July 2015. Prince George was photographed peering into her stroller at the ceremony.

Charlotte has five godparents, including Kate's cousin, Adam Middleton.

Kate and William released a few photos of the princess as a baby, but she didn't join her parents on an overseas tour until she was 16 months old, in September 2016, when she went with her family to Canada.

Charlotte and Kate wore color-coordinating outfits throughout the trip, a tradition they've kept up throughout Charlotte's life.

Charlotte became a big sister in 2018 when Prince Louis was born, completing the Wales family. The princess attended Thomas's Battersea school in London from 2019 to 2021, and she began attending the Lambrook School after the Wales family relocated to Windsor full-time in 2022.

William and Kate have balanced their children's royal roles with their privacy as they've grown up, allowing them to attend only a handful of royal engagements each year and releasing photos of them for special occasions, like birthdays or holidays.

Charlotte appears annually at Trooping the Colour and the royal family's Christmas walk at Sandringham. She has also been present for milestone moments for the royals, like Queen Elizabeth's funeral in September 2022 and King Charles' coronation in May 2023.

Charlotte often appears to be the most comfortable of her siblings at royal engagements, speaking with members of the public and even correcting her brothers on royal protocol.

The young princess has also been spotted attending less formal events from time to time, showing off a more authentic side of the royal family in the process.

Kensington Palace shared photos of Charlotte at the Eras Tour in June 2024, smiling with William, George, and Taylor Swift. She also joined her mother at Wimbledon in July 2024, accompanying Kate to the first solo engagement she attended after announcing her cancer diagnosis.

Charlotte's comfort in the spotlight, even compared to her older brother, differentiates her from royal "spares" of the past, who are often relegated to the role of wild child in comparison to the heir's steadiness. She seems calm and competent at public events, and she may already be taking after her great-aunt Princess Anne, whose steadfastness is an asset to King Charles.

At only 10, it's clear Princess Charlotte's future in the royal family is bright.

A family of 5 downsized to a one-bedroom apartment to escape feeling 'house poor.' Saving money hasn't been the only benefit.

Megan and Emmett Hawkins

  • Megan and Emmett Hawkins were raising their three kids in a five-bedroom home.
  • After feeling "house poor," they decided to rent out the home and move into a one-bedroom apartment.
  • The couple said downsizing had saved them money and brought their family closer.

Going into 2024, Emmett and Megan Hawkins were living the American dream.

Emmett, 37, and Megan, 34, owned a 2,100-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Charlotte, North Carolina. They were raising their three kids there and had ample space for them to grow.

But after months of feeling isolated and financial strain in their picture-perfect neighborhood, the Hawkinses decided to downsize to a one-bedroom apartment.

A year into the move, the couple told Business Insider they had no regrets.

House poor

By the spring of 2024, the realities of homeownership were weighing on the Hawkins family.

"We were in a development, and we just weren't happy there," Emmett said. "We didn't really have that sense of community."

Megan was also the primary caretaker of their house, and she said she felt like she was "constantly cleaning" it.

The financial strain of homeownership was also adding stress to their lives. They'd been looking for a different home to buy in a better neighborhood for more than two years, but high interest rates deterred them.

As time went on, the idea of being "house poor" in a desirable neighborhood became less and less appealing.

A couple poses for a selfie in front of greenery.

Megan and Emmett Hawkins

Then, they went to a birthday party for a friend living in a Charlotte apartment complex. The Hawkinses said they thought the complex was "gorgeous," and they loved that it had amenities such as a pool and lawn for their kids to enjoy that they didn't have to maintain.

They lived in Queens, New York, in the early years of their relationship, so they were familiar with apartment living. It seemed like it could be the solution to their problems.

In May 2024, the couple decided to rent out their home and move into a one-bedroom apartment in the complex. Their mortgage is $1,400 a month, and they rent out the home for $2,300. Their apartment costs $1,600, but with the rental income and lifestyle changes, the couple said their overall expenses had been cut nearly in half.

They donated and sold much of their furniture and kids' toys, preparing themselves to live in the 830-square-foot apartment.

They initially set up the apartment like a studio, putting their bed in the living area. But in August, Megan received a diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation, and she had to have surgery in December. They moved the kids' beds to the living area following the operation, giving her a quiet space to recover in the bedroom.

The surgery left the mom of three with partial paralysis that's slowly improving over time. Emmett had to take time off from his job as an insurance claims adjuster to care for his wife and their children while she recovered.

He ended up getting laid off, so as of May, the couple's only sources of income are the rent their tenants pay and their TikTok account, where they document their life living small.

The realities of downsizing

A year after they moved into their apartment, the Hawkinses are loving their minimalist life.

They said their smaller living space had made them closer since they spend so much time together. They also love spending more time outdoors, exploring the complex and the city as a family.

"We really treat this like a crash pad for the most part," Megan said of their apartment. "We're always at the pool or at the park."

A woman smiles with three children.

Megan and Emmett Hawkins

The couple has also found it easier to clean their space since it's so much smaller. For instance, they said their old home's playroom was "chaos all the time," whereas their kids' toys are now in bins that the children help keep organized.

Though they love their downsized life overall, it does come with challenges. The Hawkinses said it could be difficult to get things done around the apartment or even just watch TV together when the kids are asleep, and they wouldn't mind having more storage space.

A one-bedroom apartment won't work for them forever, but they think it's great for their family, particularly while their kids are so young. Plus, living somewhere that saved them money when health issues arose was a "relief" for the couple, they said.

"There's some relief knowing that we have a lower monthly expense, which was huge because we were spending a lot of money, meeting our deductible, and going to the hospital," Megan said.

Initially, the Hawkinses planned to stay in the apartment for just one year, but they renewed their lease in May because of the surgery's impact on their family.

By May 2026, they hope to have purchased a plot of land to build a two-bedroom home for their family. They want their new home to be about 900 square feet, and they're eager for their children to have land to run around. Whether the dream happens or not, they don't plan to live in a large house again anytime soon.

"There's no joy when I see those big giant houses," Megan said. "I just feel bad for the person cleaning it."

A couple invested $100,000 into a shipping container home that they plan to turn into a rental property

A side-by-side of a couple smiling together and a shipping container home.
Lexi and Diego Newkirk built a shipping container home.

Lexi Newkirk

  • Lexi and Diego Newkirk built a two-story shipping container home on their land in Texas.
  • They invested around $100,000 in the home, building a full-sized kitchen and luxury bathroom.
  • The Newkirks plan to rent out the home on Airbnb down the line.

Lexi and Diego Newkirk had big plans for the sprawling piece of Texas land they bought in October 2023.

The Newkirks dreamed of filling their 12.5-acre property with homes made of shipping containers, a more whimsical alternative to the traditional tiny home to appeal to adventurous travelers.

When a dispute with a neighbor put a wrench in their plans, Lexi Newkirk, 25, and Diego Newkirk, 26, decided to just build one shipping container home for themselves instead, investing $100,000 in a space they plan to live in for the short term and rent out down the line.

Lexi and Diego Newkirk bought land in Texas Hill Country in October 2023 with big plans to create a rental community.

Lexi Newkirk, a digital marketer, and Diego Newkirk, who works in home restoration, bought their 12.5 acres of land in October 2023 for $180,000. Their property is about an hour from Austin.

Lexi Newkirk told Business Insider they envisioned creating a community of tiny homes people could rent for short-term stays on the property. Specifically, they pictured homes made out of shipping containers.

"People would much rather stay in a shipping container versus a traditional little tiny house out here," she said. "It would also rent for a lot more."

The couple decided to make their dream a reality, buying two containers for their Texas property in November 2023. They opted for single-use containers, which are pricier because they have less wear and tear than containers used multiple times. They cost $5,500 each.

The Newkirks had to pivot their plans after buying two containers.

Lexi Newkirk

Just as the couple was about to break ground in November 2023, one of their neighbors approached them with concerns about their plans for a tiny-home community.

"We got a call from our neighbor basically asking us what the heck we're doing," Lexi Newkirk said, adding that the neighbor, who threatened to sue, took issue with the fact that the tiny homes would be visible from the road on the Newkirks' property, which sits at the front of the neighborhood.

The couple didn't want to end up in a lawsuit, so they decided to shift their plans. They moved the two storage containers they had already purchased to the center of their property and decided to build one slightly larger home with them.

They started construction in January 2024 and wrapped the interior in April 2025.

During construction, they lived in an RV. Now that they've moved into the shipping container home, they plan to stay for a year or two before turning it into an Airbnb.

They designed the home to have two floors, plus a basement.

Lexi Newkirk

The couple thought two containers made the most sense for the house, as they would have additional space without building a separate roof.

Together, the containers are 640 square feet, and the Newkirks also built a basement for the space.

"My husband and I did the layout together," Lexi Newkirk said of the design process. "We didn't hire anyone. We built it ourselves."

"He did most of the construction himself," Lexi Newkirk told BI of her husband. "He did all the stacking of the containers, all the welding."

Sometimes, he hired workers to help with larger projects, and the couple outsourced their plumbing and electrical work. Still, having him take on much of the work saved them money.

Lexi Newkirk said she and her husband love to cook, so they wanted to use more of their square footage for the kitchen, particularly after only having an RV-sized kitchen for a year.

Details like butcher block countertops and a tiled backsplash, as well as the full-sized appliances, make the kitchen feel homey.

Much like the kitchen, the Newkirks didn't want to feel cramped in their bathroom like they did in their RV.

They decided to make their bathroom spacious, complete with a double vanity, walk-in shower, and a standing tub with a view of the property through a large window.

"The bathtub faces the sunset, so you can take a bath watching the sunset or shower," Lexi Newkirk said.

"The way we engineered and built the house, the bedroom wakes up to the sunrise," Lexi Newkirk said. "And there's a huge window, so you can see all the stars and the moon."

Although the bedroom stands out to her, she said she loves every inch of the home because she and her husband designed it.

"We kind of poured our hearts into it," she said.

The couple is building out deck space to increase the home's square footage and allow them to enjoy outdoor living, but the house is complete otherwise.

They estimate that they invested $100,000 in their dream shipping container home.
A shipping container home at sunset. A water tank sits next to the home.
The house took a year to build.

Lexi Newkirk

Building the house itself was expensive, but Lexi Newkirk said the remote nature of their property made the construction even more costly.

"For example, our electricity pole was 300 feet down, so we had to have a 300-foot trench," she said. Getting water delivered monthly is also costly, and their electricity costs are high.

They hope to eventually use solar power on the property, but it will take some time to build it out.

Although the build was pricey, the couple still saved money by living in an RV on their property during construction.

Doing much of the work themselves and not taking out a loan for the project also helped, as they don't have a mortgage payment, though it did make construction take longer than it would have otherwise.

The Newkirks plan to turn their property into a homestead with a barndominium.
A selfie of a couple inside a construction site.
They have big plans for the home.

Lexi Newkirk

Now that the shipping container house is complete, the Newkirks are already starting to fulfill their next dreams for the property: making it into a homestead.

They already have 20 chickens and plan to bring some cows onto the property in the next few years. They also want to build a garden and mostly live off their own property.

They'll also build a barndominium for themselves in the not-too-distant future, moving into the bigger house so they can rent the shipping container home. For now, though, the tiny home is perfect for the couple.

"Everything in our house is super custom because of the size," Lexi Newkirk said. "The tiny house is only 640 square feet, but it has everything we need."

Meghan Markle's career history, from acting on 'Suits' to her Netflix series

  • Meghan Markle's career has changed dramatically throughout her life.
  • She is best known for acting on "Suits" and becoming a working royal after marrying Prince Harry.
  • Meghan also worked as a calligrapher for many years, and she is becoming a lifestyle mogul.

It's safe to say Meghan Markle has been through some career changes in her life.

Meghan, 43, was best known as an actor for years, landing her big break on "Suits." Then, she became the Duchess of Sussex and a working royal, serving the crown alongside Prince Harry.

Now, she is living a post-royal life and working on becoming a lifestyle mogul, launching her Netflix series "With Love, Meghan" and new brand As Ever.

However, Meghan worked for years before being cast on "Suits," and not just as an actor. Take a look back at Meghan's career, from her odd jobs to her starring roles.

Meghan Markle's early career

Meghan began working when she was 13, holding a part-time job at a frozen yogurt shop called Humphrey Yogart in 1995.

Paula Sheftel, Meghan's boss at the store, told the Mirror in 2017 that she was "very popular with customers" during her tenure.

Meghan studied acting and international relations at Northwestern University. While still in school, she did a six-week internship at the American embassy in Argentina.

According to her IMDb page, Meghan began pursuing a career in acting even before she graduated in 2003. Her first official role was Nurse Jill on "General Hospital" in 2002, and she went on to book a series of smaller roles in shows like "CSI," "Knight Rider," and "90210" over the next eight years.

Meghan also worked as a briefcase girl on "Deal or No Deal" between 2006 and 2007 and appeared in a "Tostitos" commercial in 2009.

She landed a few small film roles, including as a bartender in the 2010 movie "Remember Me," which her first husband, Trevor Engelson, produced, and as Jamie in "Horrible Bosses" in 2011.

In addition, Meghan had odd jobs as she built up her acting career, including working as a hostess at an unnamed restaurant, as she told Vanity Fair in 2017.

She also worked as a part-time calligrapher, a gig she described as "super lucrative" in a 2018 interview with Esquire. She told the outlet her calligraphy work included Dolce & Gabbana's holiday correspondence and the invitations for Paula Patton and Robin Thicke's 2005 wedding.

Meghan's breakout acting role on 'Suits'

Meghan landed her breakout acting role when she was cast as Rachel Zane in "Suits" in 2011. Her character started as a paralegal in the legal drama and became a lawyer, and she had an on-again-off-again romantic relationship with Michael Ross in the series.

Meghan filmed "Suits" from 2011 to 2017; her final episode aired in April 2018. She became a household name through the show. She also lived in Toronto while on the series, as it was filmed in Canada.

Although her acting career was hitting its peak on "Suits," Meghan also had a side hustle while on the show. She started her blog The Tig in 2014 and ran it until 2017. The lifestyle blog featured travel content, recipes, and interviews with Meghan's famous friends.

She also channeled her off-screen time into service work, becoming a United Nations women's advocate in 2015 and a World Vision ambassador in 2016.

Meghan left "Suits" after announcing her engagement to Harry in November 2017, preparing to become a working royal. USA Network and Universal Cable Productions confirmed her departure in a statement at the time, saying they wanted "to send our most heartfelt congratulations to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on their engagement."

"Meghan has been a member of our family for seven years, and it has been a joy to work with her," the statement said. "We want to thank her for her undeniable passion and dedication to 'Suits,' and we wish her the very best."

Post-royal ventures with Prince Harry

Meghan became a working royal after she and Harry got married in May 2018, attending royal engagements and taking on patronages on behalf of the crown. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back as senior royals in January 2020, and they wrapped up their royal duties in March of the same year.

Meghan and Harry launched their post-royal careers in the summer of 2020. In August 2020, they signed a reported $100 million production deal with Netflix to produce both non-scripted and scripted series for the streamer and a $20 million deal with Spotify to make podcasts in December of that year.

They also created Archewell Inc. in October 2020, which would serve as the umbrella organization for their production and charitable ventures.

Netflix

In 2021, Meghan became an author, publishing the children's book "The Bench" in June, and she launched her Spotify podcast "Archetypes" in August. Both ventures were immediate successes; "The Bench" became a New York Times bestseller, and "Archetypes" dethroned Joe Rogan's podcast to reach the No. 1 spot on Spotify when it premiered. The popularity of "Archetypes" waned, though, and Harry and Meghan's relationship with Spotify ended in 2023.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's first Netflix series, "Harry & Meghan," was a docuseries about their relationship and step back as senior royals. It was a huge hit when it premiered in December 2022, though the couple didn't build on that momentum until 2025.

Meghan's lifestyle era

On March 4, 2025, Netflix released "With Love, Meghan," a lifestyle series that builds on Meghan's passions from her blogging days. The show was initially set to premiere in January, but Meghan delayed its release amid the LA wildfires.

Season one explored Meghan's recipes, hosting hacks, and gardening tips. A different celebrity guest starred on each episode of the show, offering a mix of interactions with Meghan and her friends and industry experts like Roy Choi.

When it debuted, the show hit Netflix's top 10. On March 7, the streamer announced that season two of "With Love, Meghan" had already wrapped filming and would air sometime in the fall.

Netflix

In February 2025, Meghan also revealed she would launch a lifestyle brand, As Ever, in conjunction with the show, unveiling a new website and Instagram page the same day.

The company was originally announced in March 2024 as American Riviera Orchard, a nod to a common nickname for her neighborhood of Santa Barbara. Meghan shared an Instagram account and website for the company and teased its first product, strawberry jam, by sending jars of it to her famous friends.

However, in August 2024, Meghan's trademark application for the brand was denied because the name was "primarily geographically descriptive." In February 2025, she announced in an Instagram video that she had rebranded the company to As Ever and that Netflix had joined the company as her business partner.

The first As Ever products, including a raspberry spread, wildflower honey, flower sprinkles, a crepe mix, a shortbread cookie mix, and three types of tea, dropped on April 2. The collection sold out in under an hour.

Meghan hasn't announced when As Ever's next collection will drop, but dozens of products are registered under the company's name.

The Duchess of Sussex's latest venture is a new podcast, "Confessions of a Female Founder," which she launched on April 8. In each episode, Meghan speaks to different women who run businesses and shares reflections on her own journey of launching As Ever.

  • Celebrities celebrated the 2025 Met Gala at after-parties on Monday night.
  • Some stars changed into daring looks, embracing sheer fabric and cutouts.
  • Rihanna's ensemble showed off her baby bump, and Monica Barbaro rocked a sheer gown.

After walking up the iconic Met Gala steps in sharp suits, long capes, and massive hats, celebrities were ready to switch things up for the many after-parties that raged through NYC on Monday night.

Jenna Ortega ditched her metal ruler dress for a bodysuit, while Sabrina Carpenter threw on pants and a bold yellow coat.

And Janelle Monáe kept things on theme with a daring version of the illusion suit she wore on the red carpet — this time with pasties.

So, without further ado, here are the most daring Met Gala after-party looks.

Janelle Monáe

Janelle Monáe was one of the best-dressed celebrities at the 2025 Met Gala, enlisting the help of Thom Browne and "Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell to pull off an illusion-bending black-and-red suit that wowed on the red carpet.

And Monáe kept the theme going with her after-party look, giving us a daring interpretation of her original look.

The ensemble included a black-and-white miniskirt and blazer, which Monáe wore open to show off anchor pasties. And the look wouldn't be complete without Monáe's pinstripe top hat and monocle.

Brooks Nader's little black dress for the Met Gala was anything but simple.

From one side, the model appeared to be wearing a classic long-sleeved gown. But the one-shoulder ensemble had a daring cutoff on the other side to show off some skin.

Nader kept the rest of her look simple with a sleek ponytail and statement earrings.

Keke Palmer swapped her black and white Vera Wang ensemble for a crop top and miniskirt as she hit the Met Gala after-party circuit on Monday night.

Palmer's black crop top featured long, puffy black sleeves and matched her clutch, while her miniskirt sparkled with silver and blue embellishments.

Rickey Thompson

Rickey Thompson dazzled in a gray suit with a twist to the pinstripe trend that dominated the Met Gala on Monday night.

The actor and comedian's suit had stripes of silver embellishments that sparkled in the night.

Thompson skipped the shirt underneath, pairing his suit with a big cross necklace.

Ashley Graham kept things sleek in a silver crop top and skirt for the after-parties on Monday night.

Her ensemble was reminiscent of Lorde's look at the Met Gala, which included a silver bandeau and a bandage-style skirt.

Rihanna proved once again that she is the undisputed queen of the Met Gala as she announced her third pregnancy on Monday night.

And she kept her pregnant belly on full display as she swapped out of her Marc Jacobs suit dress and into her all-black after-party look.

The ensemble included a long black skirt with ties up each side and a long-sleeved black ruffle top. She topped off the look with a shiny black suit jacket and sheer lacy shoes that matched her headpiece.

Monica Barbaro

After dominating the Met Gala for years, naked dresses were almost completely absent on Monday night.

But Monica Barbaro stayed true to the mainstay trend with her sheer black number for the after-parties.

The "A Complete Unknown" star's button-up dress featured gold and pink flower embroidery, short sleeves, and ruffles on the shoulders.

Alex Consani

Alex Consani glittered in over 32,000 Swarovski crystals for her Met Gala debut on Monday night, and the sparkles didn't stop for the after-party.

The model swapped her white gown for a shimmering spaghetti-strap gold minidress, which she paired with a choker necklace that matched her bracelet and earrings.

Jenna Ortega

Ortega put a fun twist on menswear for her after-party look, donning a black bodysuit designed to look like a blazer. The garment had a plunging neckline, shoulder pads, and button detailing.

A gold brooch on her lapel, sheer tights, and black pumps completed the ensemble.

Sabrina Carpenter

After the Met Gala, Carpenter swapped her pantsless red-carpet outfit for trousers and a blouse.

However, her fuzzy yellow coat embroidered with Louis Vuitton logos stole the show. She also carried a matching yellow purse.

Saint Laurent designed Rosé's after-party ensemble, which included a sheer black top that revealed her black bra, a black blazer coat, and a high-low skirt.

The soft-pink skirt featured a ruched hem, which evoked the idea of a bubbling glass of rosé.

Shaboozey

Shaboozey's after-party look offered a high-fashion twist on the looks he wears to perform. Hot-pink, floral embroidery covered the singer's jacket, matching the chaps on his jeans.

Both garments had bow detailing, and a white ascot around Shaboozey's neck elevated the ensemble. Pink boots tied it all together.

The singer's after-party look was a continuation of the gown she wore for the red carpet, as it had the same halter neckline and sparkly fabric but a shorter hemline.

She also swapped her white cape coat for a shorter black number.

Lee chose a deconstructed corset minidress for the after-party. The dress was overlaid with sheer lace and had shrug-style sleeves. Her headpiece and heels matched the dress.

Lyonne's second look of the night was a bright-red, crocheted dress. The open weave of the high-neck dress showed peeks of her skin, as did the sheer black tights she wore under it.

She contrasted the feminine garment with black boots.

Fox played with denim for her post-Met Gala ensemble, wearing wide-legged shorts embroidered with the Yankees logo, laced boots, and a blue corset.

Flowers burst off the architectural top's one-shoulder neckline and hem, contrasting the industrial feel of the rest of the outfit.

  • The 2025 Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday.
  • What goes on at the gala is largely kept secret, but photos from inside the 2025 event offer clues.
  • Photographers offered peeks at the event's decor and shots of A-list stars spending time together.

The first Monday of May is among the best parties of the year, and one of the toughest tickets to snag — even if you're an A-lister.

So, once celebrities had posed for their pictures and made their way up the iconic Met Gala steps, they were ready to kick back and have a blast.

Some posed with Rihanna's belly after she announced just hours earlier that she and ASAP Rocky were pregnant with their third child.

Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter took a cherry from Usher as he performed for the star-studded crowd, and Janelle Monáe and Jenna Ortega tore up the dance floor.

Here are the best photos from inside the 2025 Met Gala.

Colman Domingo, ASAP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams served as the co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala, bringing the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"-themed event to life.

When they made it inside, the group posed for a photo with Anna Wintour, celebrating that their hard work had finally paid off.

Glimpses of the interior showed that The Met had been transformed into a wonderland for the gala.

The steps into the museum looked almost like a portal into another world, as daffodil petals hung from the ceiling and the area was swathed in blue lighting.

The otherworldly feel continued inside, as attendees dined in dim lighting surrounded by projections of galaxies on the surrounding walls.

A dance floor seemed to be built into the center of the room.

Peeks of the table settings revealed a mix of patterns and antique-style furniture.

Patterned table cloths decorated the tables for the gala, as did multicolored bouquets and flower-printed napkins.

The chairs also featured paisley cushions in an array of colors, giving the tables an eclectic and inviting feel.

When the party got started, Tommy Hilfiger inspected ASAP Rocky's ensemble.

Rihanna made headlines at the Met Gala before she even arrived, revealing hours before the party that she was pregnant with her third child.

She didn't arrive at the gala until late in the evening, so she and ASAP weren't able to pose for photos on the red carpet as they had in years past. They took a picture together inside, though, highlighting how well their outfits fit together.

Ciara stopped to take a picture with Rihanna, too.

After solidifying her status as a Met Gala icon with years of stunning ensembles, it's no surprise Zendaya is at home at fashion's biggest night.

At the 2025 event, she seemed to have a great time, dancing as musicians performed live music around her.

She also reunited with one of her "Euphoria" costars.

Once she was inside the event, she changed into a sparkly black gown with a shorter purple cape and posed for a photo with her date for the night, her son Evan Ross.

Angela Bassett snapped a selfie of herself with Jon Batiste, which was a surprise because the Met Gala typically doesn't allow phone usage.

Yara Shahidi also looked at her phone next to them, and Jaden Smith sat with the trio.

  • The 2025 Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night.
  • There were many standout looks, but a few stars missed the mark with their outfits.
  • Kim Kardashian's look was underwhelming, and Heidi Klum didn't match the night's theme.

The 2025 Met Gala was full of stunning fashion and memorable moments.

The "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" event welcomed actors, musicians, and billionaires to walk the famed steps to celebrate Black dandyism and menswear. Colman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton were among the A-list co-chairs who brought this year's theme to life.

There were a few attendees, however, who missed the mark entirely with their ensembles.

Here are the worst looks of the night, from underwhelming suits to dresses that looked out of place.

It's never a dull moment when Kim Kardashian arrives at the Met Gala, but this year, she didn't make much of a splash in her all-black ensemble.

Kardashian sported a bodycon black leather dress designed by Chrome Hearts and a wide-brimmed fedora fit for Carmen Sandiego.

In classic Kardashian fashion, the reality TV star still wanted her outfit to be daring, revealing a low-rise skirt in the back. But her look didn't stand out in a night full of bold suits and regal colors.

The Norwegian billionaire stepped on the red carpet in a cream-colored suit, an overcoat seemingly made from latex, a wide-brimmed hat, and Tabi boots.

Overall, the ensemble looked like it needed some tailoring.

He also carried a see-through briefcase filled with vibrant red roses, which made the outfit look more like a costume than a high-fashion moment.

Maya Hawke

Hawke looked pretty as she walked the red carpet in a custom Prada look. However, her pink, stapless dress and sheer, tan cape didn't seem inspired by menswear or Black dandyism.

Sadie Sink

Sink made her Met Gala debut in a black ball gown with lace detailing on the bodice that crossed over her torso, forming sheer sleeves.

The dress was pretty but had a Gothic feel that didn't suit the theme. The full skirt also swallowed Sink, making it look like the dress was wearing her.

Anne Hathaway

It pains us to put the Princess of Genovia on this list, but Anne Hathaway's look just didn't stand out.

The fashion icon kept things simple for fashion's biggest night with her custom Carolina Herrera ensemble, which featured a white dress shirt and a bedazzled black-and-white striped skirt.

A matching sparkling jacket could have added a little more oomph to the overall effect.

Pamela Anderson

You couldn't miss Anderson as she walked the red carpet in a crystal-covered gown from Tory Burch. It was silver, long-sleeved, and wide in shape. She also wore her hair in a new blonde bob.

Though the outfit was fun and a fashion risk for Anderson, it mostly looked out of her comfort zone.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum may be the queen of Halloween, but she played it too safe on fashion's biggest night.

The supermodel wore a simple, sleeveless black dress with a flowing train to the Met Gala. The ensemble could have benefited from some flashy accessories or a bold jacket.

Savannah James

James attended the Met Gala in her husband LeBron James' stead, as the honorary co-chair pulled out of the event due to a knee injury.

Her mermaid style Thom Browne gown was on-theme, with its suit-jacket bodice and pinstripe pattern.

However, the corset detailing on the bodice didn't look well-tailored to James' body. Some small adjustments to the bodice would have made this a standout look.

Lorde's matching set reminded us of mid-aughts bandage dresses.

While we loved the silver color and sheen of Lorde's Thom Browne outfit — which included a bandeau that seemed to defy gravity — we thought the skirt style was a bit outdated.

We think Lorde's look would have had a bit more edge if she had paired her bandeau with tailored pants instead.

Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow made his Met Gala debut on Monday, but his baggy suit just didn't look right for a night celebrating impeccable tailoring.

His shirt's open collar and creased pants also detracted from the overall ensemble, and his baby-blue Gucci sneakers didn't seem to coordinate with the color scheme.

We wish the Bengals star had opted for something a bit sharper.

Omar Apollo

Wales Bonner created Apollo's suit, which included a cropped jacket, straight trousers, and a sparkling leopard-print shirt.

The patterned top was an unexpected twist for a menswear look, but it clashed with the yellow streaks in his hair. The look might have worked better if he had chosen just one pop of color.

Gayle King

Just weeks after returning from space, King attended the 2025 Met Gala in a hot-pink halter dress that resembled a deconstructed suit.

Though the dress, designed by Chuk Collins, embraced menswear elements, other style details dated the look; namely, its peplum waist, pink plaid, and sparkling floral appliques.

Its lengthy skirt also could have benefited from a bit more tailoring.

Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber's Met Gala look lacked the color and fun that define dandyism.

Instead, she opted for a simple black suit jacket and tights. The ensemble could've benefited from bold accessories or a pattern to add depth to the monochromatic look.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner arrived at the Met Gala with Hailey Bieber, and her outfit was similarly lackluster.

The model sported a tailored Torishéju suit jacket with a matching gray skirt.

It was a hue that felt more corporate than representative of dandyism. It could've been better in a pastel tone instead.

  • The 2025 Met Gala, fashion's biggest night, is underway in New York City.
  • This year's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," celebrates menswear and dandyism.
  • Colman Domingo and Bad Bunny stole the show with their bold and stylish looks.

This year's Met Gala is all about menswear, so it's no surprise that Hollywood's best-dressed men are stealing the show.

The co-chairs of the 2025 event, which is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," are Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and ASAP Rocky, who all made sure to make an entrance.

However, they weren't the only men to deliver bold red-carpet moments. Many left their boring tuxedos at home, bringing some real fashion to the Met Gala steps.

Take a look at the best-dressed men of the 2025 Met Gala.

Domingo, one of the evening's co-chairs, arrived at the event in a royal-blue cape with a sequined overlay designed by Valentino. It was reminiscent of an iconic look worn by André Leon Talley, a former Vogue editor and fashion legend, who chose a similar blue oversized cape for the 2011 Met Gala. Talley died in 2022.

Just a few moments later, Domingo removed the cape to reveal another iconic look.

  • The 2025 Met Gala was held in New York City Monday.
  • A-list stars arrived in outfits celebrating the gala's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme.
  • Colman Domingo and Coco Jones wore some of the most eye-catching looks of the night.

Fashion's favorite night of the year has finally arrived: the Met Gala.

The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute was held in New York City on Monday. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour chaired the event, as she does every year, alongside Met Gala co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and ASAP Rocky.

The 2025 Met Gala theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," celebrating menswear and Black dandyism. A-list stars arrived in outfits that celebrated the theme, and some celebrities' outfits stood out more than others.

Take a look at the best-dressed stars at the 2025 Met Gala.

Rihanna, who revealed she was pregnant with her third child on Monday, was among the last celebrities to arrive at the Met Gala, but her ensemble was worth the wait.

The Fenty Beauty mogul's gown took inspiration from menswear with its pinstripe-patterned skirt and gray striped bodice, which called attention to her baby bump. She wore a micro suit jacket adorned with brooches atop the dress, and she added a polka-dot ascot and a wide-brimmed hat to the look.

The musician was a vision in her green jumpsuit, which was seemingly crafted from velvet. It had a plunging neckline with ruffles in a lighter shade, a satin belt around her waist, and long sleeves that complemented the garment's wide pant legs.

The all-black gown was both romantic and dramatic. Designed by Alessandro Michele for Valentino, the dress had a velvet bodice with long sleeves, feathers attached at the back of its neckline, and a full skirt with deep pleats.

Richardson might be an athlete, but she looked like a princess in her Valentino gown. It had a long-sleeved layer of lilac lace beneath a yellow gown, which was made from knotted pieces of fabric that created thin slits across her torso.

Versace designed his tan suit, which fit loosely but was still tailored just right for the musician. The contrast of his leather vest and felt hat really made the outfit, though.

Palmer's black-and-white ensemble took inspiration from Dorothy Dandridge and was crafted by Vera Wang. The designer made her a top with suit lapels acting as halter straps, a structured bodice, and large pieces of fabric that flowed over her hips.

The look also included black trousers, a feathered headpiece, and open-toed heels.

At first glance, the football star's Burberry suit was simple. But the black three-piece set actually had beaded shoulders that shone in the light. His tie was accessorized with a diamond pin, and his hat also added an old-school touch that matched the night's theme.

Zac Posen created the actor's custom pantsuit in the Gap Studio. Its fitted vest top had flowing sheer sleeves that moved with Harrier on the red carpet, and its wide-leg pants added a fun and dramatic touch.

Thompson turned heads with her coat-inspired dress. The piece was fitted at her waist but exaggerated at the hips, highlighting the tall leather boots she wore beneath it. Her accessories included a shiny tie and a top hat.

Union and Wade arrived in black-and-white Prada numbers. Union's dress' white train cinched her waist and flowed out behind her, while Wade's vest's textured detailing made his look stand out.

Kaling arrived in a custom Harbison Studio outfit, pairing a jacket that had white lapels with a form-fitting black skirt.

Large embellishments of different shapes lined the center of the skirt, and Kaling belted the outfit with a red and white sash that spilled out into a train behind her.

Andrew Scott

Scott played with color with his Met Gala suit, which was designed by Giuliva Heritage. He paired the Tiffany-blue suit with a red vest, mustard shirt, and teal and black tie, almost creating the colors of a retro diner. Flowers sat on his lapel for a fresh touch.

Washington's custom Simkhai look paired a jacket top, which dipped low in the center and had a cutout in the back, with a semi-sheer, pale-yellow skirt that flared to her ankles. A wide-brimmed pale-yellow hat and matching shoes completed the ensemble.

Stallion's custom Michael Kors gown was inspired by Josephine Baker and Eartha Kitt. The sparkly, silver dress had a sweetheart, halter neckline and hugged her figure, while her white coat train brought glamour to the ensemble.

Suki Waterhouse leaned into the menswear side of the Met Gala theme, as the bodice of her black Michael Kors dress was designed to look like a suit jacket. It contrasted with the floor-length skirt, which had a thigh-high slit, and open back.

  • The 2025 Met Gala is taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday.
  • This year's theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," and the dress code is "Tailored for You."
  • We're breaking down the best celebrity arrivals, outfits, and more.

The 2025 Met Gala is here.

Celebrities have started arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to attend the prestigious fundraising event, which is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

In celebration of menswear and Black dandyism, attendees have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored for You," which Vogue has said is open to interpretation. Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and ASAP Rocky will co-chair the event.

Here's what to know about fashion's biggest night.

Although repeat Met Gala attendees make up much of the red carpet, many celebrities are coming to their first-ever Met Gala in 2025.

The Eagles' Saquon Barkley made his Met debut on Monday, as did Colman Domingo's husband, Raúl Domingo. Pianist Gina Alice Redlinger and model Christian Latchman are also attending their first Met Gala this year.

Colman Domingo showed why he's one of the best-dressed men in Hollywood with his regal arrival and on-carpet outfit change.

Everyone knew Colman Domingo was going to bring it to the Met Gala, and the Oscar-nominated actor lived up to the hype on Monday night.

Domingo first arrived on the Met Gala steps in a positively regal blue Valentino cape with a shimmering gold breastplate — an outfit that would've made the late style icon and OG dandy André Leon Talley extremely proud.

But that wasn't all Domingo had up his sleeve. The "Sing Sing" star revealed there was a perfectly tailored suit underneath, complete with a polka-dot tie and a flower.

Anna Wintour ditched her iconic sunglasses as she walked the blue carpet.

Anna Wintour arrived for fashion's biggest night in head-to-toe pastels.

She sported a baby-blue silk shift dress embroidered with flowers, which coordinated well with the blue carpet covered in daffodils.

Wintour paired her ensemble with a matching blue floor-length coat and a brooch that sparkled from its lapel. She styled her signature bob to perfection, although her usual pair of sunglasses were MIA.

The Vogue editor-in-chief first co-chaired the Met Gala in 1995 and has been at its helm ever since. Under her influence, the gala has become a star-studded spectacle and the cost of a ticket has skyrocketed from around $2,000 to $75,000.

Stars have started arriving, and Teyana Taylor is setting the tone for the night.

Taylor, one of the hosts of Vogue's livestream for the evening, arrived at the gala with the costume designer Ruth Carter.

Her ensemble featured all the hallmarks of dandyism, from a pinstripe suit to a cane and statement hat, and additions like platform shoes and floral brooches that felt uniquely her.

Taylor's whole look was a standout, but her statement cape was the star of the outfit. It trailed behind her dramatically and was embroidered with "Harlem Rose," referencing her 2018 song "A Rose in Harlem."

LeBron James, an honorary chair for the 2025 Met Gala, said he wouldn't be attending the event.

James announced on X on Monday that he would be unable to attend because of a knee injury.

"Hate to miss an historical event," he wrote, adding that his wife, Savannah James, will still be attending. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"

It would have been the basketball star's first Met Gala appearance.

What happens inside the gala is secretive, but we know a few details.

There's much more to the Met Gala than a flashy red carpet.

Inside, attendees first experience a cocktail hour, where they can walk through the museum, see the newest fashion exhibit, and mingle with other stars. They're later seated for a formal dinner, from which they can see the evening's stage show. In the past, musicians including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga have performed. Fingers crossed for a Doechii performance this year.

Of course, the Met Gala isn't open to just anyone. It costs $75,000 for a single ticket and $350,000 for a table. The latter are often purchased by fashion designers, who dress and bring celebrities as guests.

Rihanna's outfits for the 10 Met Galas she has attended to date have become legendary over the years.

She reached icon status at the 2015 Met Gala with the yellow Guo Pei gown she wore. Rihanna also stole the show when she co-chaired the gala in 2018, wearing a Margiela ensemble inspired by the pope.

Rihanna skipped the 2024 gala, but we're hopeful she'll be back this year since her partner, ASAP Rocky, is a co-chair. Her outfit will surely make a splash if she walks the Met Gala red carpet again.

It's always fun to see who shows up at the Met Gala, but there are a few celebs we're really hoping to spot on the red carpet.

This year's co-hosts and committee members are all especially stylish.

We can expect Doechii to have a standout moment, Colman Domingo could easily be the night's best-dressed star, and Tyla might turn heads for the second year in a row.

We're also keeping an eye out for Ayo Edebiri, who looked effortlessly chic in a powder-blue Chanel skirt suit in Vogue's "'Superfine' and Dandy: Iconic Creatives" spread ahead of the gala.

While the rest of the guest list is under wraps, we're hopeful stars like Zendaya, Greta Lee, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez will return to the Met, as they wore some of the most eye-catching looks at the 2024 Met Gala.

It's also common for celebrity couples to make red-carpet debuts at the Met Gala, so we'll be looking out for A-listers walking hand in hand up the steps.

Vogue's editor in chief first chaired the Met Gala in 1995, and in the 30 years she's been spearheading it, Wintour has become synonymous with the event itself.

She decides who earns a coveted spot on the Met Gala's guest list. The list of celebrities who have never attended a Met Gala has some surprising names.

It was also rumored that she approved the outfits of everyone who attended, though she shut that down in an interview with "Good Morning America" ahead of the 2025 event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she told Michael Strahan. "Some, no idea."

This year's Met Gala is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

Vogue reported that the theme was inspired by Black dandyism, menswear, and "the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora."

Black dandyism, specifically, is a style and movement that's been embraced by Black men since the 18th century. It typically involves sharp dressing — think tailored suits, hats, and canes — to assert individuality, culture, and equality.

Met Gala guests have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored For You," though it's open to interpretation. Still, Vogue said we can expect to see a surplus of suits, canes, pocket squares, and other pieces related to dandyism.

This year will also mark the second time the Costume Institute exhibit is focused on menswear. The museum previously hosted the "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" display between November 2003 and February 2004.

  • The Met Gala is being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night.
  • This year's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," celebrates menswear and Black dandyism.
  • The latter is a style and a movement of Black culture, once expressed by men like Langston Hughes.

Fashion's biggest night of the year has finally arrived.

The 2025 Met Gala will take place Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year, celebrities flock to the gala for the annual fundraiser, which raises money for the museum's Costume Institute, in high-fashion ensembles.

The Met Gala has a different theme each year. For the 2025 event, it's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." As reported by Vogue, the theme was designed to celebrate menswear and Black dandyism, which is both a style and an ethos that dates back to the 18th century.

Here's everything you need to know about Black dandyism and how the Met Gala will honor it.

Black dandyism, explained

Put simply, a dandy is a man who's dressed sharply. He's refined, has excellent manners, and is perfectly groomed.

Beau Brummell, a figure of Regency England, is widely considered the first dandy. His care for his personal appearance inspired other men of the late 18th and 19th centuries to employ good hygiene and experiment with trendy garments, leaving behind aristocratic ways of dressing.

Black dandyism, though, goes beyond fashion and aesthetics.

As Ty Gaskins reported for Vogue, what's often described as a style is better defined as a "fashion revolution" — one that's simultaneously an act of protest, a creation of culture, and a celebration of individuality for Black men.

"In a world where Black people have been marginalized, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them," Gaskins wrote.

Langston Hughes sits in a chair while wearing a black suit and tie.

Black dandyism grew in the post-Emancipation era, when former slaves and servants took on dandyism — or dressing in sharp suits, polished shoes, and accessories like hats and ties — as a form of assertion by assimilation.

However, Vogue reported that the movement truly blossomed during the Harlem Renaissance when figures like Langston Hughes and Cab Calloway emerged, changing both society at large and Black dandyism specifically.

Their work and outfits inspired modern stars like André 3000 to embrace Black dandyism as a signature style and essence. Movies like "Sinners" have also embraced Black dandyism this year.

Colman Domingo and other stars will bring this theme to life

When Vogue announced the 2025 Met Gala theme in October, it reported that it took inspiration from Monica Miller's book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," published in 2009.

Both the theme and the Costume Institute's Spring exhibition will examine the impact style had on the Black diaspora, zeroing in on Black dandyism.

The Met Gala itself has never focused on menswear, and the museum's forthcoming exhibit is only the second in the Costume Institute's history to do so, following its "Men in Skirts" exhibit, which ran from November 2003 to February 2004.

The 2025 Met Gala also has a "Tailored For You" dress code, designed to encourage attendees to honor the theme and reflect their personal style.

This year's Met Gala co-chairs — Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and ASAP Rocky — will help to set the tone for the night with their looks, as all are known for their high-fashion approaches to menswear.

Vogue said it hopes attendees take "creative interpretation" of the dress code, though suits and accessories typically associated with men, from pocket squares to statement hats, will be popular on the red carpet.

  • Over the weekend, numerous parties were held to celebrate the 2025 Met Gala.
  • Colman Domingo and Pharrell Williams took fashion-forward approaches to menswear.
  • Cynthia Erivo and Sabrina Carpenter also wore eye-catching outfits.

The 2025 Met Gala doesn't start until Monday night, but celebrities already spent the weekend celebrating.

Stars will soon gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Met Gala, a fundraiser for the museum's Costume Institute.

For the 2025 gala, A-list attendees will dress for the event's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, which honors Black Dandyism and menswear.

Stars won't reveal how they're channeling the Met Gala theme until they walk the red carpet, but the outfits they wore to pre-parties for the event over the weekend might offer clues.

Take a look at some of the best outfits stars wore to pre-Met Gala events.

Versace designed the actor's sleeveless slip, which was covered from top to bottom in translucent sequins. The dress also had a cowl neckline and the brand's signature hardware in silver across each strap.

She wore it with black patent-leather kitten heels, a micro purse in black, and small diamond stud earrings.

Anne Hathaway embraced menswear, matching the 2025 Met Gala theme.

Also in Versace, Hathaway wore a white button-down blouse, a loose black blazer with a gold logo embellishment at its pocket, and straight-leg trousers.

Her party look was cool and chic on its own, but it became more feminine thanks to her choice of accessories.

The actor carried a sparkling gold purse, sported large sunglasses on her face, and donned heeled sandals with beaded detailing.

Ariana DeBose was there in a blazer-style dress.

Her black Versace number had long sleeves, a deep V-neckline, crystal buttons, and an above-the-knee skirt.

The garment gave a feminine edge to a classic menswear piece.

It was her silver accents, however, that really stole the show. To complete her look, she added thick sunglasses, silver sandals with bow straps, and a shimmering purse with ring handles.

Oil heiress Ivy Getty wore one of the night's most daring looks.

Getty wore a yellow Versace minidress with long sleeves, an all-over shell print, and a plunging neckline that revealed the middle section of her torso. One of Versace's signature gold safety pins held the garment together.

She completed the look with classic accessories, including black pumps, a crystal anklet with a cross charm, a gold purse, and hoop earrings.

For the Moda Operandi party, the "Espresso" singer stepped out in a sleeveless Versace dress that hugged her body and shimmered in the light.

It had sheer sequins all over its baby-blue fabric, a gold safety pin that pulled it together at the hips, and a thigh-high slit in its skirt. For shoes, Carpenter wore her signature platforms in the form of tan sandals.

She also wore platform Versace heels in the same pink shade, dangling crystal earrings, and rectangular sunglasses with cherry-red frames.

Domingo attended pre-Met Gala events throughout the weekend, and his cream suit from Eleven Sixteen for Wayman + Micah's party spoke directly to the 2025 Met Gala theme.

The bold tailoring of his cream suit represented Black dandyism, while the thick material and checked pattern made it feel modern. Domingo's tie coordinated with the suit, and his white shoes completed the outfit effortlessly.

On Sunday, Henson also played with the silhouette of a suit, arriving at the LaQuan Smith Met Gala party in a fitted jacket and matching wide-legged trousers.

The jacket was open on Henson's chest, mirroring the pointed hemline that cinched her waist. Sparkles covered the entire outfit, giving it a glitzy edge.

The same night, Pharrell Williams was spotted arriving at Anna Wintour's Met Gala dinner in a more casual look.

Williams is also a Met Gala co-chair this year, and he arrived at the dinner that Wintour hosts the night before the event in a mix of high- and low-fashion garments.

He paired a green blouse and a brown sweatshirt with khaki trousers and a Louis Vuitton trench coat. His coat matched his bag, and Williams added sunglasses and a yellow cap to the look.

The ensemble effortlessly blended styles, perhaps offering a clue as to how Williams might be approaching his Met Gala look.

Tinted sunglasses and Christian Louboutin shoes completed the look.

The worst Met Gala looks of all time

  • The 2025 Met Gala is almost upon us.
  • The event is fashion's biggest night, but some A-list attendees miss the mark with their looks.
  • Some stars have ignored past themes, while others picked outfits that looked like costumes.

Fashion enthusiasts are rejoicing, as it's finally time for the 2025 Met Gala.

The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute will take place on May 5. For the 2025 event, A-list attendees will dress for the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, putting their spin on menswear and dandyism.

Plenty of stars wear stunning outfits, but it's easy to miss the mark with fashion for the night. From misinterpreting the Met Gala theme to ignoring it altogether, some stars just don't know how to dress for the event.

Take a look back at some of the worst Met Gala looks of all time.

In 2008, Jennifer Lopez wore a teal dress that would have worked for a mother of a bride, not a Met Gala attendee.

Jennifer Lopez's Met Gala outfits have gotten bolder since her 2008 appearance.

Alberta Ferretti designed Lopez's dress that year. Its single strap was decorated with a crystal appliqué extending across its neckline. The embellishment dated the gown, while its tiered fabric made it look simple instead of luxurious.

A different dress in the same teal shade would have worked better for the musician.

Gwyneth Paltrow sported a pink gown in 2013 that was full of color but lacking style.

Valentino created the hot-pink number Paltrow wore that year. It had long sleeves, a see-through stripe of mesh above the chest, and a wide skirt that circled around her.

Though its shock of color was fun, the gown's simple, shapeless design left something to be desired.

Paltrow also wore minimal makeup, delicate jewelry, and her hair in a casual ponytail — but it was all too simple to suit her dramatic dress.

A bolder beauty look, a high bun, or statement earrings and rings could have improved the outfit.

Kristen Stewart also attended the Met Gala that year, but her lace outfit didn't evoke the event's punk theme.

The "Twilight" star walked the 2013 red carpet in a Stella McCartney jumpsuit. The maroon piece was long-sleeved and crafted with sheer lace sections from top to bottom.

The shiny fabric was also puffed at the hips, creating an exaggerated effect.

Though Stewart looked sharp in her runway-ready outfit, it didn't match the year's "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" theme. The actor also has a naturally edgy style, so not displaying it in full force was a missed opportunity.

There was too much going on with the ensemble Brie Larson wore at the 2014 Met Gala.

The Marvel actor sparkled her way down the red carpet that year.

She wore a Prada ensemble that included a blue-and-gold tank top with sequins arranged in various patterns, straight-legged pants with even more sequins, and classic black pumps.

It's tough to go wrong with all-over sparkles, but the mismatched shapes they were styled in clashed.

Her golden outfit also had a regal flair, which didn't work with her futuristic bun hairstyle.

Kim Kardashian, on the other hand, played it too safe.

Many of Kim Kardashian's Met Gala looks have been iconic. Unfortunately, the blue Lanvin gown she sported in 2014 wasn't one of them.

Designed by Alber Elbaz, the strapless dress had black satin lining, a matching belt, pockets at the hips, and a thigh-high slit.

She wore the piece with strappy sandals, dangling earrings, a wavy hairstyle, and neutral makeup.

Though Kardashian looked pretty, her overall outfit was dull and forgettable.

For the 2015 event, Katy Perry wore a graffiti-inspired dress that didn't fit the "China: Through the Looking Glass" theme.

Katy Perry was made to wear Moschino — and she has at most Met Galas she's attended over the past decade.

Her 2015 selection from the brand, though, missed the mark. She wore a black, strapless dress with a deep sweetheart neckline, a long bodice, and a peplum band above a full skirt.

The latter piece was especially eye-catching, as it was decorated with a colorful print that looked like the dress had been covered in graffiti. She also carried a purse shaped like a can of spray paint.

Because the event was meant to honor Chinese culture and fashion, it didn't make sense for her to wear the quirky ensemble that night.

Sarah Jessica Parker also missed the mark at the 2015 event with a headpiece that sparked backlash.

The actor arrived at the Met Gala in a custom H&M dress. The black gown was innocuous, with its one-shoulder design and colorful fabric ribbons on one side.

However, Parker accessorized the gown with a red headpiece designed by Philip Treacy that many thought reinforced racist stereotypes about Asian women.

Parker never addressed the criticism publicly.

Selena Gomez should have saved her 2016 Met Gala look for a street-style moment.

Louis Vuitton designed her black-and-white ensemble, which consisted of a polka-dot midi dress, a leather bralette worn on top, and lace-up patent-leather boots.

The outfit was fun, feminine, and perfect for a street-style day in New York City.

However, it wasn't as effective at the Met Gala, where the look felt underwhelming. It also wasn't the best representation of the "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" theme.

Kylie Jenner tried to put an edgy twist on her glamourous look in 2016, but ultimately failed.

Olivier Rousteing created the crystal-covered gown Jenner wore that year. It had long sleeves, shoulder pads, a form-fitting bodice with all-over cutouts, and a floor-length skirt with sparkling fringe.

Jenner's glam makeup perfectly complemented the gown's silver shine, putting a glamorous spin on the look.

However, the various shapes of crystal arrangements on the gown — its epaulette-style shoulder design and the imitation corset across the waist, for example — made it look more medieval than anything.

Madonna's outfit was daring, but distracting.

At the 2016 Met Gala, Madonna wasn't afraid to show some skin. She wore a black Givenchy gown made from see-through lace, revealing everything from her shoulders to her thighs.

In theory, that should have worked for the boundary-pushing superstar, especially when paired with thigh-high leather boots and silver jewelry.

The outfit missed the mark, though, thanks to two round cutouts across the chest and a high-cut bottom that revealed her backside — both looked more silly than provocative.

It didn't seem like Harry Styles put much effort into his 2019 Met Gala outfit.

The 2019 Met Gala marks the first and only time Styles walked the famous Met steps for the annual event.

Unfortunately, his outfit that day was a letdown, especially considering he was a Met Gala co-chair that year. He wore a one-piece Gucci jumpsuit that was almost plain black. Its only interesting features were its flowing mesh sleeves with lace at the wrists and its ruffled neckpiece.

Styles would have been better off experimenting with color of a more daring silhouette on the pink carpet that year.

There was nothing campy about Karlie Kloss's gold minidress that year.

In 2019, Kloss famously posted a photo of herself in the reflection of a mirror with the caption "looking camp right in the eye." So, fans expected the model to have a standout fashion moment at the Met Gala.

Instead, she arrived in a gold, strapless minidress with short, puffy black sleeves. Though it was designed by Dapper Dan in collaboration with Gucci, it looked more like a party dress you could find in any mall.

Nick Jonas wore a white suit and silver accessories that didn't match the theme or feel authentic to his style.

Though he was probably attempting to match the camp theme with his dramatic Dior look, Jonas looked more like he was wearing a costume.

A piece of white fabric wrapped around his body and arm, while his undershirt and boots were covered with the same silver sparkles.

The Cartier jewelry he wore — from an ear cuff to statement rings — only added to the silly flair.

Ciara's Dundas gown for the 2021 Met Gala was fun, but it would have been more appropriate at a different event.
Ciara Met Gala 2021

Ciara arrived at the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" gala in a sparkly, lime green gown from Dundas.

The gown was designed to look like Russell Wilson's football jersey, nodding to Ciara's husband through the number three on the bodice. The "Goodies" singer even carried a football-shaped clutch with the outfit.

It was a fun outfit, but it celebrated Wilson more than the Met Gala theme. The gown would have been better suited for the ESPY Awards.

The same year, Evan Mock detracted from his Thom Browne ensemble with a bold mask.

Mock arrived in a Thom Browne suit that put a whimsical spin on traditional menswear. The suit featured shorts instead of pants and safety pin detailing on the jacket.

The shorts exposed his dress socks, and Mock wore an array of rings, elevating the look. However, the black mask he added to the outfit, which included a mohawk and covered his head completely, was distracting.

The look would have been more of a success without the mask.

Lourdes Leon's bright-pink look for the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" gala didn't fit the theme either.

Madonna's daughter made her Met Gala debut in a hot-pink Moschino gown designed by Jeremy Scott.

The bodice featured a bikini-style bra and crisscrossing fabric across her abdomen. The sarong skirt flowed to the floor, and the dress was covered in heavy beading.

Thanks to its color and halter neckline, the gown evoked early 2000s fashion, but the reference wasn't strong enough to make it feel on-theme.

Dan Levy's 2021 ensemble had a sweet message, but the design was overwhelming.
Dan Levy wears a blue outfit on a red carpet.

Levy attended the 2021 Met Gala in a custom JW Anderson ensemble designed to look like Earth. A depiction of two men kissing made up the bodice, and the image took inspiration from AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz, celebrating queer people in the US and globally.

The message was sweet, but the ensemble's design overshadowed it with its puffy sleeves, printed pants, glittery fabric on Levy's waist, and black boots.

The outfit might have been better if it had emphasized the embroidery on Levy's bodice instead of taking a more-is-more approach.

At the 2022 Met Gala, Cara Delevingne's body paint-based outfit offered shock factor but didn't feel like the best approach to the theme.

The "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" Met Gala had a "white tie, gilded glamour" dress code, encouraging celebrities to dress to the nines.

Delevingne took that theme literally, arriving in a red Dior Haute Couture tuxedo with no shirt. Gold paint covered her body, and she carried a cane with gold detailing.

Her look was certainly a pun on the dress code, but it didn't make a fashion statement. If Delevingne had worn the red suit with a shirt and gold accessories, it could have been great on the Met Gala red carpet.

Likewise, Nicki Minaj's Burberry look had too much going on.

Minaj's Burberry strapless gown was made of black feathers and cinched on her waist with an oversize belt. Her chest and arms were covered in body gems, and she wore black leather pants beneath the dress and a black hat.

The outfit had so much going on that it was hard to know where to look. If Minaj had ditched the hat and pants, the ensemble would have looked effortlessly chic, but it was just too busy as she wore it.

Ben Platt's white suit for the 2023 Met Gala looked like it didn't fit well.

The "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" Met Gala honored the late designer's work, and Platt turned to Lagerfeld's love of tweed with his custom Wiederhoeft suit.

Platt's cropped jacket and flared pants were made of white tweed, with black detailing on the pant seams and the jacket's neckline and cuffs. He wore a corset-style blouse beneath the jacket, and the gap between the jacket and the wider pants created the illusion that Platt's waist was dramatically small.

The waist illusion was effective, but came at the cost of Platt's jacket and pants looking stiff. Likewise, his blouse was exposed underneath the hem of the jacket sleeves, making it seem like the outfit didn't fit.

Florence Pugh's headpiece for the same Met Gala was distracting from her overall ensemble.

Pugh's Valentino dress for the gala was a solid choice. The white gown had a dramatic train, and a black bow tied the strapless bodice together, playing up Lagerfeld's favorite color scheme.

However, Pugh's feathered headpiece overshadowed the gown. It sat way above Pugh's head and created a diamond shape on her forehead.

The actor debuted her shaved head at the gala, so it made sense she wanted to emphasize it with a headpiece. Still, the one she chose was so dramatic that it took away from the rest of the look.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes' ensembles for their Met Gala debut in 2023 didn't fit the theme.

It seemed like the couple didn't attempt to fit the Karl Lagerfeld-inspired theme with their Hugo Boss looks, aside from sticking to black and white color schemes.

Brittany Mahomes' white gown had silver detailing on the off-the-shoulder neckline, which coordinated with her silver pumps. Patrick Mahomes accessorized his black suit with silver jewelry, black loafers with silver detailing, and black sunglasses.

They could have worn the outfits on any red carpet, which isn't ideal for a Met Gala look.

The blend of styles in Ariana DeBose's Joseph Altuzarra dress for the 2023 gala didn't work together.

DeBose wrote on Instagram that her gown was designed to offer a modern spin on silhouettes from the 1930s and '40s, speaking to Lagerfeld's celebration of retro styles.

A faux-fur-trimmed hood created the neon-yellow gown's off-the-shoulder neckline. The dress cinched DeBose's waist with elastic fabric before flowing into a mermaid-style skirt.

The gown's bright color and jacket-style bodice weren't obvious in their nods to the past, so it looked a bit out of place at the Met Gala. Perhaps a different color or less modern detailing might have made the dress a better fit for the event.

Lil Nas X's nearly nude ensemble for the 2023 Met Gala felt out of place at an event paying homage to a late designer.

Pat McGrath covered Lil Nas X in head-to-toe silver body paint and crystals, transforming him into a red carpet take on Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette.

A mask and boots completed his look, which was certainly eye-catching but didn't strike the tone of Lagerfeld's work. The ensemble might have been more fitting at the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" Met Gala.

Billionaire Gustav Magnar Witzøe's outfit for the 2024 Met Gala looked more like a costume than a red-carpet outfit.

The 2024 "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" Met Gala had a "Garden of Time" dress code. Witzøe, a Norwegian billionaire, dressed to the theme with an Atelier Versace look consisting of a sparkly bodysuit, a leg-baring skirt, and a dramatic cape.

The ensemble had an ancient Greek feel, but rather than paying homage to the time period, it looked like Witzøe was just dressing up as someone from the era.

The beading on Rita Ora's Tom Ford dress fit the 2024 theme, but the message got lost in her styling.

Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

Ora's column dress had a boat neckline and then cinched inward, exposing her legs. The gown was made of strands of colorful beads, which dated back to the first and second centuries BC, as Ora told Vogue during its livestream for the 2024 event.

The material was a great fit for the "Garden of Time" dress code, but Ora's styling didn't emphasize it. Instead, the nude bodysuit she wore under the gown and her slicked-back hair became the focus of the dress.

Ora should have let the dress shine through her styling to nail the theme.

Prince Harry said he wants 'reconciliation' with the royal family. Here's a timeline of his and Meghan Markle's tumultuous relationship with the royals.

  • On Friday, Prince Harry told the BBC he wants "reconciliation" with his family.
  • The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's relationship with the royal family has been strained for years.
  • Harry and Meghan Markle haven't been spotted publicly with the royals since 2022.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship with the royal family is basically nonexistent these days.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's issues with Harry's family date back years, and they reached a fever pitch after the couple stepped back as senior royals and started speaking publicly about their problems with the monarchy.

However, on Friday, Harry revealed in an interview with BBC News that King Charles isn't speaking to him — but Harry wants "reconciliation" with his family.

Here's a timeline of Harry and Meghan's relationship with the royal family.

Prince Harry appeared close to his brother growing up, though his relationship with his father was more complicated.

Prince Harry and Prince William appeared to be close in photos from their childhood.

And when Princess Diana died after a run-in with the paparazzi in August 1997, the brothers seemed to grow tighter than ever, sticking to each other's sides in the years following her death.

William said he and Harry were "uniquely bonded because of what we've been through" in a video released by Kensington Palace in 2017.

Their father, Charles, became their primary parent after their mother's death, but according to royal reporter Katie Nicholl's book "The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown," he was often too "busy" to spend time with his children.

"With a busy work schedule and Camilla now very much a priority in his private diary, Charles placed too much trust in William and Harry to look after themselves," Nicholl wrote of the king's approach to parenting his teenage sons, which led them to get into trouble.

Harry also appeared to be close to William and Kate Middleton when he was single.

Harry served as the best man in William and Kate Middleton's 2011 wedding. After the Waleses got married, the trio often attended royal events together, seeming to have a close relationship.

Harry once called Kate "the big sister I never had," according to Marie Claire.

The three also founded the mental-health initiative Heads Together in 2016.

A mutual friend brought Harry and Meghan together in 2016, and they became a couple almost immediately.

Prince Harry told James Corden that by his second date with Markle, he knew what they had was "pretty special."

"Dating with me, or with any member of the royal family, I guess, is kind of flipped upside down," he said. "All the dates become dinners or watching the TV or chatting at home. And then eventually, once you become a couple, you venture out to dinners, to the cinema, and everything else. So, everything was done back to front with us."

"There were no distractions, and that was great, that was an amazing thing. We went from 0 to 60 like in the first two months," he added.

On November 8, 2016, Harry confirmed his relationship with Meghan by speaking out against racist comments made about her.

Harry's royal communications secretary released a statement on his behalf.

The statement said Harry felt compelled to confirm his relationship because "his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment."

It went on to say Markle had been subjected to harassment in news articles, comments sections of articles, and in person as people tried to gain access to her home.

"Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle's safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her," the statement said. "It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is 'the price she has to pay' and that 'this is all part of the game.' He strongly disagrees. This is not a game — it is her life and his."

Following the release of the statement, reports surfaced that William did not approve of Harry going public with his relationship. He then disputed those claims in a statement issued by Kensington Palace, according to The Telegraph.

"The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him," the statement said.

Harry and Meghan announced they were engaged on November 27, 2017.

As the couple told the BBC, Harry proposed to Meghan at home while they were making dinner.

"[We were] trying to roast a chicken and it just — just an amazing surprise, it was so sweet and natural and very romantic," Meghan said of the proposal. "He got on one knee."

Kensington Palace and Clarence House announced the engagement via a statement.

William and Kate also released a statement about the couple's news, showing their support for the engagement: "We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together."

At the time, Harry and Meghan's wedding seemed to be a joyous, family affair.

Charles walked Meghan down the aisle; Prince William was Harry's best man; and Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis served as a bridesmaid and page boy, respectively.

However, there was controversy in the weeks leading up to the wedding because of Meghan's family.

Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, and half-sister, Samantha Markle, repeatedly spoke to tabloids about Meghan, and Thomas posed for staged paparazzi photos in exchange for money, according to the Daily Mail.

In the early months of their marriage, Meghan and Harry lived in Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace, where William and Kate lived with their children.

But shortly after Kensington Palace announced Meghan was pregnant, the Sussexes shared that they would be moving to Frogmore Cottage — 18 miles away from Kensington Palace on the grounds of Windsor Castle — on November 18, 2018.

At the time the move was announced, outlets including The Sun cited unnamed sources who said there was "tension" between the brothers.

In March 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex split their office with the Cambridges.

Until the spring of 2019, Harry and Meghan shared a royal office with William and Kate.

In March of that year, Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been appointed their own royal household.

Soon after the palace announced the couple would have their own household, The Times reported that Harry and Meghan originally requested "entire independence" from Buckingham Palace, which the Queen denied.

"They wanted their household to be entirely independent of Buckingham Palace, but were told 'no,'" an unnamed source told The Times at the time.

"There is an institutional structure that doesn't allow that kind of independence," the source went on to tell the outlet. "The feeling is that it's good to have the Sussexes under the jurisdiction of Buckingham Palace, so they can't just go off and do their own thing."

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor was born on May 6, 2019, and the Sussexes broke royal tradition with his birth.

Meghan and Harry welcomed Prince Archie on May 6, 2019. Unlike Princess Diana and Kate Middleton, Meghan did not pose for a photo with her newborn at the Lindo Wing at London's St. Mary's Hospital.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very grateful for the goodwill they have received from people throughout the United Kingdom and around the world as they prepare to welcome their baby," a statement from the palace said.

The duke and duchess posed for photos with Archie at Windsor Castle two days after she gave birth.

Harry also held Archie at the photo call, which broke royal tradition, as Diana and Kate both held their newborns when introducing their children to the world.

Although their offices had already been split, Meghan and Harry further separated themselves from William and Kate by resigning from The Royal Foundation, which Harry and William founded together in 2009.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the separation in a statement in June 2019, though The Sun's Emily Andrews first reported the news of the split in May 2019.

"Later this year, The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge," the palace's statement said. "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation."

"In addition, both couples will continue to work together on projects in the future, including on The Foundation's mental health programme, Heads Together," the statement added.

In October 2019, Meghan hinted in an interview that she was unhappy, and Harry seemed to confirm his rift with William.

In the ITV documentary "Harry and Meghan: An African Journey," about his and Meghan's tour of Africa, Harry said he and William were "on different paths at the moment," which appeared to confirm their rift.

"We don't see each other as much as we used to because we're so busy, but I love him dearly. The majority of this stuff is created out of nothing, but as brothers, you know, you have good days, you have bad days," he said.

In the same documentary, Meghan became emotional when interviewer Tom Bradby asked how media attention was affecting her mental and physical health, particularly after she gave birth to Archie.

"Look, any woman, especially when they're pregnant, you're really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging," she said. "And especially as a woman, it's really — it's a lot."

"Also, thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm OK," she said to Bradby. "But it's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes."

Meghan and Harry announced they were stepping back as senior royals on January 8, 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping back from royal life in a statement on Instagram.

"After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," the statement said. "We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."

The BBC reported via X at the time that the royal family was not made aware of Meghan and Harry's decision before they posted the news to social media.

Meghan and Harry also announced on their website that they would no longer participate in the royal-rota system.

In response to the duke and duchess' announcement, the royal family said there were "complicated issues that will take time to work through" in a statement from the royal communications office obtained by Business Insider

On January 13, 2020, William and Harry released a joint statement addressing allegations that Harry and Meghan had been "bullied" out of the family.

The brothers released a statement to royal reporter Rebecca English in response to an article from the Times of London that said Harry and Meghan had been "bullied" out of the royal family.

"Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge," a statement from a spokesperson for the princes said. "For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful."

"It's clear from my conversations this morning that BOTH brothers are deeply, deeply unhappy about suggestions that Harry feels he has been 'bullied' out of the Royal Family by William," English added in an X post.

On January 18, 2020, Queen Elizabeth said she supported the Sussexes' "wish for a more independent life" in a statement.

"Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family," the statement said

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family," the Queen said. "I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life."

"I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family," the statement read. "It is my whole family's hope that today's agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life."

In addition to the Queen's personal statement, Buckingham Palace shared a statement clarifying that Harry and Meghan would be completely stepping back from their royal duties beginning in the spring of 2020. It also said they would no longer be receiving public funds, and they planned to pay back the Sovereign Grant for their Frogmore Cottage renovations.

The statement said Buckingham Palace would not comment on the details of the Sussexes' security arrangements. "There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security," it said.

Meghan and Harry attended a Commonwealth Day event alongside King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton.

The Sussexes and Cambridges were near each other throughout the event, but they did not speak and barely made eye contact.

The pairs typically chatted at royal events, and Meghan and Kate even hugged at the 2019 Commonwealth Day ceremony.

Harry and Meghan moved to California shortly after the event, and they bought their first home in Montecito in July 2020.

At the time, Meghan was suing the Mail on Sunday over the misuse of private information, infringement of copyright, and breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 after it published a letter she wrote to her father following her wedding in 2018.

In July 2020, Meghan's legal team filed a court document that said she felt "unprotected by the Institution."

"The Claimant had become the subject of a large number of false and damaging articles by the UK tabloid media, specifically by the Defendant, which caused tremendous emotional distress and damage to her mental health," a legal spokesperson for the duchess said in the document obtained by BI.

"As her friends had never seen her in this state before, they were rightly concerned for her welfare, specifically as she was pregnant, unprotected by the Institution, and prohibited from defending herself," they added.

Meghan also defended herself against criticism that she leaked the letter to People through an unnamed friend, saying the Kensington Palace communications team did not give her "the opportunity to participate" in the media response to People's story.

Harry and Meghan announced they were officially financially independent from the royal family on September 8, 2022, by paying back $3 million of taxpayer money they used to renovate Frogmore Cottage.

A spokesperson for the Sussexes confirmed to BI that the couple paid back the renovation money after signing a multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix.

"A contribution has been made to the Sovereign Grant by the Duke of Sussex," the spokesperson said.

"This contribution as originally offered by Prince Harry has fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, a property of Her Majesty The Queen, and will remain the UK residence of the duke and his family," the statement went on to say.

According to The Telegraph and The Sunday Times, Prince Harry requested the royal family lay a wreath on his behalf at the Cenotaph for a Remembrance Sunday service on November 8, 2020.

Royal courtiers denied his request because "he is no longer representing the monarchy," according to the Times.

An Instagram post from the royal family showed that William, along with the Earl of Wessex, the Princess Royal, and the Duke of Kent, laid wreaths at the Cenotaph, and wreaths were laid for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip as they did not attend in person.

Reports surfaced that Buckingham Palace was investigating claims Meghan Markle bullied palace staff on March 3, 2021, days before her and Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey was set to air on CBS.

Four days before the Sussexes' interview with Winfrey aired on CBS, Buckingham Palace announced it was investigating allegations that Meghan bullied two senior royal staff members, which was first reported by The Times of London.

"We are clearly very concerned about allegations in The Times following claims made by former staff of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex," the palace said in a statement obtained by BI on March 3, 2021.

"Accordingly, our HR team will look into the circumstances outlined in the article," the statement said, referring to The Times of London report. "Members of staff involved at the time, including those who have left the Household, will be invited to participate to see if lessons can be learned."

"The Royal Household has had a Dignity at Work policy in place for a number of years and does not and will not tolerate bullying or harassment in the workplace," the palace went on to say.

Representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex denied the allegations through a spokesperson in a statement to The Times and said it was "no coincidence" the palace announced it was investigating the allegations ahead of the couple's interview with Winfrey.

"Let's just call this what it is — a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation. We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of The Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet," the spokesperson said in a statement obtained by The Times.

"It's no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining The Duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and The Duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years," the spokesperson went on to say.

"The Duchess is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma," the spokesperson went on to say. "She is determined to continue her work building compassion around the world and will keep striving to set an example for doing what is right and doing what is good."

Harry and Meghan's interview with Winfrey aired on March 7, 2021, and they made multiple bombshell allegations about the royal family.

During their tell-all interview with Winfrey, the duke and duchess opened up about their experience in the royal family.

In the interview, Harry and Meghan said members of the royal family made racist remarks about Archie's skin tone before he was born.

They also said the firm disregarded Meghan's mental health issues, with Meghan saying she had suicidal thoughts and that when she asked a senior member of the institution for help, the staffer told her she could not seek help because it would not look good for the monarchy.

Meghan also said that Kate made her cry during the week of her wedding over a disagreement about Princess Charlotte's flower girl dress, disputing reports that Meghan made Kate cry.

In addition, Prince Harry said his father stopped taking his phone calls before he and Meghan stepped back, and he and Meghan shared that the king cut the couple off financially following their step back.

Prince Harry clarified that his grandparents didn't make racist comments about his son a day after the interview.

Following the interview, Oprah Winfrey shared with CBS' Gayle King that Prince Harry told her his grandparents, the Queen and Prince Philip, didn't comment on Archie's skin tone ahead of his birth.

Winfrey told King that Harry wanted to ensure that it was known "that it was not his grandma nor his grandfather that were a part of those conversations."

Buckingham Palace issued a statement about the interview two days after it aired.

"The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan," the statement from Buckingham Palace said.

"The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning," it went on to say. "While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately."

"Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members," the statement added.

Prince William said the royal family was "very much not a racist family" on March 11, 2021.

Prince William and Kate Middleton made an appearance at an elementary school for a mental health initiative on March 11, 2021.

During the appearance, Sky News North of England correspondent Inzamam Rashid asked William if he had spoken to Prince Harry since the interview.

"No, I haven't yet, but I will do," he responded.

"And can you just let me know, is the royal family a racist family, sir?" Rashid responded.

"We're very much not a racist family," William said as he and Kate left the event.

Prince Harry and Prince William spoke briefly at Prince Philip's funeral on April 17, 2021, but William and Kate reportedly feared conversations with Harry would leak to the press.

Harry reunited with his family after Prince Philip died on April 9, 2021.

He attended the funeral at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on April 17, 2021, though he and William did not walk next to each other during the processional. Instead, their cousin, Peter Philips, walked between them.

Harry was also spotted briefly walking and speaking with William and Kate after the ceremony, but according to royal historian Robert Lacey's book "Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of a Family in Tumult," the couple didn't speak to Harry after the funeral because they feared the conversation would be "leaked."

Lacey wrote that William and Kate saw "no point in talking to Harry, since any discussion of substance would go straight back to Meghan to be leaked out via Oprah or some other tentacle of the Sussex network that had not stopped spreading stories in the weeks since the interview that the couple's friends had promised would be their final word."

According to royal biographer Katie Nicholl's book, "The New Royals: Queen Elizabeth's Legacy and the Future of the Crown," William and Kate also didn't attend an impromptu wake with Harry, Prince Philip, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, and Zara and Mike Tindall.

Prince Harry revealed new details about his and his wife's mental health struggles when they were senior royals when "The Me You Can't See" premiered on May 21, 2021.

In the third episode of the Apple TV+ series, Harry spoke candidly about his relationship with his father, revealing that King Charles often told him and Prince William when they were children, "Well, it was like that for me, so it's going to be like that for you."

"That doesn't make sense," Harry said of his father's refrain. "Just because you suffered doesn't mean your kids have to suffer."

"In fact, quite the opposite," he went on to say. "If you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, that you can make it right for your kids."

And in episode five, Harry shared that he woke up to Meghan crying before their interview with Winfrey aired because of a "smear campaign" from British tabloids and the firm, the institution that supports the monarchy.

"Before the interview, because of their headlines and that combined effort of the firm and the media to smear her, I was woken up in the middle of the night to her crying in her pillow because she doesn't want to wake me up because I'm already carrying too much," Harry said of Meghan.

"That's heartbreaking," he added. "I held her. We talked. She cried, and she cried, and she cried."

Meghan and Harry welcomed their daughter in June 2021, who was named Lilibet Diana after her grandmother and great-grandmother; Lilibet was Queen Elizabeth's family nickname.

Members of the royal family offered their congratulations to the family online.

"Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana!" the royal family wrote on its official Instagram on behalf of Queen Elizabeth, her son, Camilla, and William and Kate.

Charles and Camilla, as well as William and Kate, also congratulated the Sussexes in their own Instagram post, in which they didn't use Meghan and Harry's royal titles.

"We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, and Archie," William and Kate said in an Instagram post

"Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, and Archie on the arrival of baby Lilibet Diana," Charles and Camilla said in their post. "Wishing them all well at this time."

Prince Edward said Meghan and Harry's rift with the royals had been "difficult" for the family on June 10, 2021.

During an interview with CNN, King Charles' youngest brother answered a question about Harry and Meghan's rift with the royal family.

"It's very sad," Prince Edward said of the situation. "Weirdly, we've all been there before, we've all had excessive intrusion and attention in our lives, and we've all dealt with it in slightly different ways."

"We wish them the very best of luck, it's a really hard decision," he went on to say. "Fantastic news about the baby, that's great, I hope they'll be very happy. Families are families, aren't they?"

When a reporter asked him if the rift had been difficult for Queen Elizabeth, Edward said, "It's difficult for everyone. But that's families for you."

In honor of what would have been Princess Diana's 60th birthday, William and Harry came together at Kensington Palace for the unveiling of a statue made in their mother's honor.

The brothers released a rare joint statement for the occasion.

"Today, on what would have been our mother's 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength, and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better," the brothers said in their statement. "Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy."

Harry and William attended the event without any members of the royal family, including their wives, though they were joined by Diana's siblings, Charles Spencer, Sarah McCorquodale, and Jane Fellowes.

Ahead of the unveiling, Stewart Pearce, Diana's voice coach, told BI that William and Harry are bonded together by their grief for their mother.

"What the British press are not seeing is that these two young men are held in an extraordinary pact of grief," Pearce said.

A spokesperson for Charles said he did not speculate on Archie's skin color in November 2021.

In November 2021, Christopher Andersen published "Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan."

In the book, Andersen wrote that a well-placed palace source told him that it was Harry's father who speculated on Archie's skin tone.

According to the source, on Meghan and Harry's wedding day, Charles asked Camilla, "I wonder what the children will look like?"

Camilla was "somewhat taken aback" by the question and responded that they would be, "Well, absolutely gorgeous, I'm certain," the source told Andersen.

"I mean, what do you think their children's complexion might be?" Charles responded, according to the unnamed source who spoke to Andersen.

When Page Six reported on the claim, a representative for Charles said: "This is fiction and not worth further comment."

The palace also consulted lawyers about the allegation, royal writer Omid Scobie wrote on X at the time.

In December 2021, The Sun reported that Harry and Charles' relationship was at an "all-time low."

On December 7, 2021, Matt Wilkinson reported for The Sun that sources told him Charles was "deeply shocked and hurt" by Meghan and Harry's step back and the events following.

Wilkinson's sources were also cited saying that Charles and his son had "barely spoken" in eight months.

However, Charles said he was proud of Harry in January 2022.

In a personal essay about the climate crisis published by Newsweek on January 4, 2022, Charles honored William and Harry's conservation efforts.

"As a father, I am proud that my sons have recognized this threat," the king wrote. "And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net zero."

Nigel Cawthorne, the royal biographer who wrote "Prince Philip: I Know I Am Rude," told Business Insider that Charles' comments about Harry indicated he was working toward a resolution.

"Prince Charles is clearly realizing that he has to take on the conciliatory role of the grown-up that Prince Philip used to have," Cawthorne told BI at the time.

"Like his father, he is realizing that letting emotions fester will be the downfall of the Windsors. Prince Philip used what the Queen called his 'cheeky humor' to unruffle feathers, even with Harry and William's mother, Diana," Cawthorne went on to say. "Charles will have to find his own way in keeping the family together rather than let it grow apart over quibbles."

A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed to BI that Harry and Meghan paid a visit to the Queen while they were in Europe for the Invictus Games, a competition for injured service personnel founded by Harry.

Katie Nicholl's "New Royals" revealed that the Duke of Sussex also saw Charles and Camilla during the visit.

"Harry went in with hugs and the best of intentions and said he wanted to clear the air," a friend of the royal family told Nicholl of the prince's approach to his meeting with his father and stepmother.

"He actually suggested that they use a mediator to try and sort things out, which had Charles somewhat bemused and Camilla spluttering into her tea," the friend went on to tell Nicholl.

"She told Harry it was ridiculous and that they were a family and would sort it out between themselves," the same friend said, according to Nicholl.

After the visit, Harry said he wanted to make sure the Queen was "protected" and avoided a question about his brother.

On April 20, Harry discussed his visit with his grandmother during an interview with NBC for the "Today" show.

"Being with her, it was great, it was just so nice to see her," Harry said of the Queen. "She's on great form. She's always got a great sense of humor with me, and I'm just making sure that she's, you know, protected, and got the right people around her."

"We have a really special relationship, we talk about things she can't talk about with anyone else," he added.

In the same interview, Hoda Kotb asked Harry if he missed his father and brother since moving to the US, and Harry seemed to avoid the question by talking about the Invictus Games.

"For me, in the moment, I'm here, focused on these guys and these families and giving everything that I can — 120% — to them to make sure they have the experience of a lifetime," Harry responded.

In June 2022, the Sussexes attended the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, reuniting them with the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex flew to the UK with their children for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

On June 3, 2022, they made their first joint appearance at a royal event since 2020 for the Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul's Cathedral in honor of the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

Although they attended the service, they didn't attend a luncheon for the royals after the event, and they appeared to be booed by some as they exited the ceremony, according to a video published by the New York Post.

Charles and Camilla were able to meet Princess Lilibet during the trip, and a source told People that Charles had an "emotional" reaction to meeting his granddaughter.

"It was a fantastic visit," an unnamed royal source told People's Simon Perry. "The prince was delighted to see his grandson and meet his granddaughter for the first time."

"The Prince and the Duchess [of Cornwall] were absolutely thrilled to see them," the source went on to tell People.

Queen Elizabeth died on September 8, 2022, at 96. Buckingham Palace said she "died peacefully at Balmoral" in Scotland in a statement.

Members of the royal family rushed to Balmoral after the Queen's doctors said they were concerned about her. That included Harry, as he and Meghan were in London at the time for a charity event.

But Harry did not see the Queen before she died. The palace announced she died earlier that afternoon at 6:30 p.m. local time, and Harry's flight did not arrive in Scotland until 6:46 p.m., according to flight-tracking data published by The Daily Beast and Mail Online.

The Duke of Sussex was reunited with the new King Charles, Prince William, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward, and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, at Balmoral.

Meghan and Harry stayed in the UK for the Queen's funeral events.

King Charles voiced his love for Meghan and Harry in his first address as monarch on September 9, 2022.

King Charles gave his first address to the UK as monarch the day after his mother's death.

In the speech, he paid tribute to his mother, bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales on William and Kate, and expressed his love for Harry and Meghan.

"I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas," Charles said after announcing William was taking over his title.

Harry and Meghan made a surprise appearance with Kate and William on September 10, 2022, their first as the "fab four" in over two years.

On September 10, Meghan and Harry joined William and Kate for an impromptu walkabout at Windsor Castle to greet well-wishers.

A spokesperson for the new Prince of Wales told The Times of London that William personally invited Harry and Meghan to join the walk, which marked their first joint appearance as couples in years.

"The Prince of Wales thought it was an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family," the spokesperson told The Times.

But royal expert Marlene Koenig told BI the moment of unity likely wasn't a sign of a permanently mended relationship.

"I don't think there's been a reconciliation," Koenig said. "I'm sure it was insanely uncomfortable for all of them."

Meghan and Harry were later spotted with King Charles at Buckingham Palace.

In the days after the Queen's death, a spokesperson for the Duke of Sussex told BI that Prince Harry would wear a morning suit to all funeral services for his grandmother, not military attire, since he is no longer a working royal.

"Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother," the spokesperson said at the time. "His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears, and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

On September 12, The Telegraph reported that only working members of the royal family would be permitted to wear military attire to the Queen's funeral events. However, an exception had been made for Prince Andrew, who would get to wear military dress at a final vigil held at Westminster Hall despite being stripped of his military titles earlier that year.

But on September 16, ahead of a vigil at Westminster Hall attended by Queen Elizabeth's eight grandchildren, royal reporter Rebecca English tweeted that both William and Harry would wear their military attire to the service "at the King's request."

The stunning reversal seemed like an indication that the royal family was making amends in the wake of the Queen's death.

But Harry's uniform was missing his grandmother's initials.

Roya Nikkah reported for The Sunday Times on September 18, 2022, that Harry's uniform was missing an "ER" pin, Queen Elizabeth's initials, when it was returned to him.

The missing pin meant that Harry was initially not meant to wear his uniform for the ceremony, despite serving over 10 years in the British military.

An unnamed friend of Harry told Nikkah that the prince was "heartbroken" that the pin was left off the uniform, and he considered not wearing it at all out of "humiliation" since the absence of the pin seemed "intentional."

On October 27, 2022, Penguin Random House announced Prince Harry's memoir would be called "Spare."

Penguin Random House

Penguin Random House announced "Spare" would be released on January 10, 2023, though it was originally set to be released in 2022.

The title appeared to refer to Harry's former position in his family as the spare heir to the throne as William's younger brother. People often called the siblings "the heir and the spare" as children, according to Vanity Fair.

The synopsis of the book on the Penguin Random House website indicated that the prince would get candid about his relationship with his family.

"It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror," the synopsis said. "As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last."

"With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief," it went on to say.

When "Harry & Meghan" premiered on Netflix on December 8, 2022, the streaming company and unnamed royal sources disagreed about its production.

Netflix

The Netflix docuseries premiered in two volumes, with three episodes dropping on December 8 and three dropping on December 15.

At the beginning of episode one, two screen cards appeared on the screen with disclaimers about the production.

"This is a first-hand account of Harry & Meghan's story, told with never before seen personal archive," the first card read. "All interviews were completed by August 2022," before Queen Elizabeth's death on September 8, 2022.

A second disclaimer then appeared: "Members of the Royal Family declined to comment on the content within this series." The disclaimer did not note which members of the royal family were contacted ahead of the show's release.

But after the premiere, multiple outlets, such as PeopleThe Independent, and Page Six, reported that unnamed sources said Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace were not asked for comment on the contents of the series. The palaces did not respond to a request for comment from BI on the matter.

An anonymous royal source said to People that the two palaces' offices got an email from an unnamed third-party production company, but "the substance of the email did not address the entire series." The source went on to tell People that the palaces then contacted Archewell and Netflix about the email, and they got no response to their inquiry.

But a Netflix source told BI that Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace were contacted specifically about the show and were given the opportunity to comment on its content.

In the series, Harry said the royal family didn't think his relationship with Meghan would last because of her career.

In episode two of the series, Harry and Meghan discussed the royal family's first impression of her.

"I remember my family first meeting her and being incredibly impressed," Harry said. "Some of them didn't quite know what to do with themselves."

Despite being "impressed," Harry went on to say that his family didn't initially think he would end up marrying Meghan because of her career; Meghan was an actor on "Suits" when she met Harry.

"The fact that I was dating an American actress was probably what clouded their judgment more than anything else in the beginning," the prince said.

"Oh, she's an American actress; this won't last," he said of his family's thoughts.

"The actress thing was the biggest problem, funny enough," Meghan echoed her husband in a different interview during the docuseries. "There was a big idea of what that looks like from the UK standpoint. Hollywood, it was just very easy for them to typecast that."

In the series, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex also revealed they had been trying to move away from the UK since 2018.

Harry and Meghan moved away from the UK in March 2020 after stepping back as senior royals.

But as they shared in episode five of "Harry & Meghan," they considered moving to three Commonwealth countries to continue working for the Queen outside the UK.

Harry and Meghan said they presented the royal family with a plan for them to move to New Zealand in 2018; South Africa in the spring of 2019; and, finally, Canada at the end of 2019.

"The family and their people knew that we were trying to find a different way of working for a minimum of two years," Harry said.

Harry went on to say their plan to move to South Africa was approved by the Queen's office, Charles' office, and Prince William's office, and each office signed off on an "internal document" regarding the move.

But the document was leaked to The Times in April 2019, Harry said, so the move was canceled.

"Then that whole plan was then scrapped because it's now become a public debate," Harry said. "Once plans like that become public debates, nine times out of 10, it's gonna fail."

The plan to move to Canada was also leaked in January 2020, which frustrated Harry in particular because he asked his father if he could avoid putting the plan in writing. But Charles said he couldn't make the move happen if it wasn't written down.

Harry sent his father details about the move on January 1, 2, and 3, 2020, and The Sun published a story about it by January 7.

Harry also said he had nothing to do with a joint statement released by the palace with his and William's names on it after he and Meghan stepped back as senior royals.

In episode five, Harry addressed the "joint" statement a Kensington Palace representative gave Rebecca English about allegations that William had bullied the Sussexes out of the royal family.

Harry said no one asked his permission to add his name to the statement, and he was shocked when he heard about it.

"I couldn't believe it," he said.

He said he called Meghan to tell her about the statement after he heard about it.

"She burst into floods of tears," the prince said of Meghan's reaction. "Within four hours, they were happy to lie to protect my brother, and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

In the Netflix series, Harry said William yelled at him during the Sandringham Summit in January 2020.

After Harry and Meghan announced their step back on social media, senior members of the royal family gathered at Sandringham House in January 2020 to discuss what Meghan and Harry's futures as members of the royal family would be.

In episode five of "Harry & Meghan," Harry said the conversations were not productive, particularly because of William's reaction.

"It became very clear very quickly that that goal was not up for discussion or debate," Harry said. "It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me."

"I mean the saddest part of it was this wedge created between myself and my brother so that he's now on the institution's side," he went on to say. "And part of that, I get. I understand, right? That's his inheritance."

"So, to some extent, it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution," he added.

King Charles III's coronation took place at Westminster Abbey, and both Harry and Meghan were invited.

However, Harry came on behalf of the Sussexes, while Meghan stayed with their children in California, which royal experts told BI was a "brilliant" PR strategy.

The Duke of Sussex was only in London for 28 hours, and although he was not seen interacting with the king or Prince William, he chatted with his cousins and aunt, Princess Anne.

Buckingham Palace said it wouldn't be commenting after Harry and Meghan's representative said they were involved in a paparazzi car chase on May 16, 2023.

After attending an event in Manhattan on May 16, Harry, Meghan, and her mother Doria Ragland were "chased" by paparazzi for over two hours, a representative for the Sussexes said in a statement shared by royals reporter Omid Scobie at the time.

"This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians, and two NYPD officers," the statement said.

After the alleged incident, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the matter when contacted by BI.

"This isn't something we're commenting on," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told BI.

The royal family released the Sovereign Grant report on June 28. During a briefing about the report the following day, the keeper of the privy purse, Sir Michael Stevens, confirmed Harry and Meghan vacated the cottage, as the Independent reported.

"We will not be going into any detail on those arrangements here," Stevens said. "Safe to say that, as has previously been stated, the duke and duchess have paid for the expenditure incurred by the Sovereign Grant in relation to the renovation of Frogmore Cottage, thus leaving the Crown with a greatly enhanced asset."

The Diana Award recipients were announced on June 30, 2023. According to a press release reviewed by BI, the awards honor 180 young people for their humanitarian efforts and social work. The list is announced on June 30 to honor the late princess' birthday, which is July 1.

Diana's sons play an active role in the organization, and for the 2023 awards ceremony, both William and Harry filmed videos congratulating the recipients.

Their videos were filmed separately, but the brothers offered similar sentiments in their messages.

King Charles announced he had been diagnosed with cancer on February 5, 2024.

The following day, Harry visited the king for 45 minutes at Clarence House, seemingly the first time they had seen each other since Charles' coronation in May 2023.

"The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him, I'm grateful for that," Harry told Good Morning America of the visit on February 16.

Harry also told GMA that the king told him about his cancer directly.

Harry said he wanted "reconciliation" with the royal family in May 2025.

On May 2, Harry lost his legal challenge requesting automatic security for his family when they visit the UK.

In a statement shared with BI, Harry said "this legal action has been a last resort, but one that has uncovered shocking truths," pointing to the role the Royal Household plays in decisions made by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC). He also said he, Meghan, and their children continue to be the subject of "neo-Nazi and extremist threats," putting them in danger without ample security.

"The UK is my birthplace and will always be part of who I am," he said. "It is a place I love, and the country where my son was born. I've only ever wanted to continue my charitable work in supporting the causes and people that mean so much to me, and for my children to know the beauty of my homeland."

Harry also discussed the ruling and how his security issues have affected his relationship with the royals in an interview with BBC News, saying he "can't see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the UK at this point."

He also discussed his rift with his family with BBC News, saying he "would love a reconciliation" with them but that his battle for security in the UK is "the sticking point" in their relationship.

"Of course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. They will never forgive me for lots of things," he said, adding that King Charles isn't speaking to him "because of this security stuff."

"Life is precious. I don't know how much longer my father has," he said.

We shopped the new Gap x Dôen collab and only found one piece worth splurging on

A side-by-side of clothes hanging on a rack and a selfie of a woman in front of a Gap.
We checked out the Gap x Dôen collection.

  • Gap and Dôen released their second limited-edition collaboration on Friday.
  • The line mostly consisted of women's attire, though it included a handful of men's and baby pieces.
  • Two Business Insider reporters visited Gap stores to shop the collection and loved the denim shorts.

Friday was a good day to be a Gap shopper.

The brand released its second collaboration with Dôen, a line of "California vintage-inspired classics celebrating timeless femininity," as Gap and Dôen described it.

We're always curious about approachable retailers collaborating with designer brands, so two Business Insider reporters went to their local Gap stores to check out the collection the day it dropped.

A designer touch at Gap

The Gap x Dôen collection was available in select stores at 10 a.m. and online at noon ET.

For those unfamiliar, Dôen is a California-based brand specializing in women's clothing with a feminine and beachy flair. Its clothing is pricier than Gap's, but the brands share some DNA in their classic silhouettes and approachable fabric.

The new line — a follow-up to Gap and Dôen's successful 2024 collaboration — featured 38 items, including five men's pieces and four garments designed for baby and toddler girls.

Here's what we found when we checked out the collection for ourselves.

Samantha Grindell Pettyjohn, New York City shopper:

I arrived at the Gap on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan about 15 minutes after it opened, and the store was already crawling with eager shoppers.

The Dôen collection was displayed in the center of the store, with some items on a line of hangers and others on a large table. As I walked inside, staff members were already restocking the table with items from the collection. The only men's item I saw available was a $98 hoodie.

Plenty of merchandise was left on the rack, but shoppers asked the sales team if items were available in other sizes. Several people asked for size variations of the $128 gingham denim jacket.

I quickly grabbed two dresses, a pair of shorts, and a tank top before heading to the dressing room, afraid my size wouldn't be left in anything if I didn't act quickly.

I had to wait in line for about 15 minutes before I got into a dressing room, and all the shoppers waiting with me were also holding pieces from the Gap x Dôen collaboration.

Though I had been eager to try them on after seeing them online, I didn't love the $128 eyelet shift minidress or the $78 eyelet top. I thought the shapeless silhouette of both made them look like pajamas or beach coverups, and there's no way I'd spend that much on something I wouldn't wear in my everyday life.

However, I was a fan of the linen gingham maxi dress. I don't usually love how an empire waist cuts my torso, but the bow on the neckline was elastic, allowing me to adjust it for comfort and fit. The dress was breathable and pretty, and I could picture myself wearing it on a dinner date with my husband or walking around the city in the warmer months.

Still, I couldn't justify the $138 price tag, particularly because Gap sells similar maxi dresses for $50 to $60 cheaper. I also think the milkmaid, Gingham look is a bit trendy and might feel outdated by next summer.

To my delight, I adored the $78 high-rise denim trouser shorts, which were nearly sold out online by 12:30 p.m.

For nearly a year now, I've been hunting for a good pair of denim shorts, a closet staple that's annoyingly difficult to find. Many jeans shorts tend to be too stiff, fit your waist well but don't fit your hips, don't move well, or seem like they were designed for a teenager instead of an adult woman.

The Gap x Dôen shorts had everything I was looking for. The trouser fit made them look mature compared to the shorts of my past, and they didn't feel tight as I walked around. I also liked the silhouette the high waist gave me and the chic addition of the button detailing on the front.

I decided to splurge on the shorts as an investment piece in my summer wardrobe. It was a relief to know I wouldn't have to brave the experience of short shopping again anytime soon.

Amanda Krause, New Jersey shopper:

Before this week, I wasn't super familiar with Dôen. I only knew the brand made feminine, vintage-inspired basics that can be pricey.

Still, I'm always intrigued when designers collaborate with mid-range retailers like H&M and Target. So, on Friday morning, I headed to a mall in Paramus, New Jersey, to shop the Dôen x Gap line.

After a short wait outside the store, about seven of us entered — politely but quickly — and found four racks featuring a limited selection of the collaboration pieces.

I was most eager to try the $78 striped pointelle cardigan, the $78 gingham top in red, and the $98 high-rise pleated trousers in black. None of them were in stock, so I grabbed other items instead.

For tops, I tried the $88 pointelle cardigan in cream and the $78 linen blend cardigan in red.

The long-sleeved option didn't work for me. While I loved its ruffled collar and intricate knit work, I wasn't super impressed with its quality. It wasn't scratchy, but it wasn't super soft either.

However, the red, short-sleeved top almost came home with me. It fit perfectly, felt cozy, and could be a staple of my wardrobe all year round.

Reporter Amanda Krause takes a selfie to show a tan Gap x Doen cardigan (left), and Amanda in another selfie to show a red knit top from the same line.
Amanda Krause disliked how the cream-colored cardigan looked on her, but she loved the red option.

Amanda Krause/Business Insider

My wardrobe lacks solid shorts and trousers, so I promised myself I'd splurge if Gap x Dôen made the pairs of my dreams.

I tried on the same $78 shorts my colleague bought and loved them, too. Unfortunately, I only grabbed one size, which was too big. Smaller sizes were gone after I'd left the dressing room.

I was also fond of the $98 trousers in white, but not enough to buy them. They were a touch too tight around my waist — the next size up was too big — and the pants were a bit see-through from the hips to the thighs.

Reporter Amanda Krause tries on denim shorts from the Doen x Gap collaboration (left) and Amanda tries on white linen pants from the line (right).
If her size had still been in stock, Amanda Krause would have bought the denim shorts she tried on.

Amanda Krause/Business Insider

Overall, I liked most of the pieces I tried on and truly considered buying the red top. I didn't, though, because $78 just felt like a lot of money, especially for a basic that I can probably find a comparable yet cheaper version elsewhere.

A win for designer shoppers

The Gap x Dôen collection seems like a major win for Dôen fans, as the line offers the designer brand's aesthetic at a lower price point.

For instance, Dôen's Ischia dress in gingham retails for $348, over $200 more than the Gap x Dôen Gingham dress. For a Dôen fan, that markdown likely feels like a steal, even if the Gap dress is slightly different in quality or style.

However, a Gap shopper might experience the opposite.

There are several maxi dresses on Gap's site right now that retail for under $100 — some are on sale for as low as $29.97 — that are similar in quality to the dresses made for the new line. Gap is selling another maxi gingham dress for $20 less than the one from the collaboration.

If you love Dôen or need a pair of jean shorts, run, don't walk, to check out the collaboration. Otherwise, you may want to stick to Gap's stand-alone pieces.

Blake Lively's Met Gala looks, ranked from least to most iconic

  • Blake Lively is a frequent Met Gala attendee, walking its famous red carpet 10 times.
  • She has upped her Met Gala fashion game nearly every year she has attended.
  • Lively wore her most iconic Met Gala outfit as co-chair in 2022.

It's fashion's favorite time of the year: Met Gala season.

The 2025 Met Gala is set to take place on May 5. Stars will gather at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual charitable fundraiser, hosted by Anna Wintour, which benefits the museum's Costume Institute.

For the gala's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, celebrating dandyism and menswear, stars will put their spin on the event's "Tailored for You" dress code.

Many celebrities make a statement at the event, but people are often particularly excited to see Blake Lively's interpretations of Met Gala themes, thanks to her dramatic red-carpet looks.

Check out every look Lively has worn to the Met Gala, ranked from least to most iconic.

Lively's Marchesa minidress for the 2010 Met Gala was playful but lackluster compared to her other looks.

Lively's minidress stood out on the "American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity" red carpet, which was full of floor-length gowns. She paired it with glittery black shoes and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

The outfit was pretty but not as eye-catching as the actor's other Met Gala looks.

The theme of the 2008 Met Gala was "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy," and Lively attended in a black, mermaid-style dress with feathers on the skirt.

Black gloves and diamond bracelets brought a fun flair to the look, but it was a bit plain overall.

Lively's strapless, Gucci gown had a gray bodice and a black skirt, which featured tiers of silk fabric and metallic beading across the hips.

She completed her look with statement diamond earrings.

At the 2009 gala, Lively started to embrace daring fashion in a Versace dress with a thigh-high slit.

The same year that Lively became the face of Chanel, she attended the "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty"-themed event in a gown from the brand's Fall 2009 Haute Couture collection.

The bodice had a sheer base embellished with silver flowers, while taupe fabric draped over one side and was attached at her shoulder.

In 2014, Lively exuded Old Hollywood glamour in her sparkly dress, cementing her place as a style icon to watch at the gala.

The actor arrived at the "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" exhibit in a floor-length gown covered in sequins from Gucci Première. The blush gown hugged her figure to the thigh, flaring subtly at the knee into a dramatic train.

The red jewelry Lively wore coordinated with the pink color of the dress.

Lively's pink look for the 2016 "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" Met Gala didn't fit the theme, but she still made a statement.

Lively looked ethereal in the pink Burberry dress. It had a thigh-high slit that was covered by sheer fabric, offering a glimpse of Lively's leg peeking through, and red, floral appliqué adorned the gown's built-in cape.

When she walked the red carpet, Lively was pregnant with her second child, but the news hadn't been made public yet.

Lively stepped up her Met Gala game even further with the gold Atelier Versace gown she wore at the 2017 Met Gala.

Lively's dress for the "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" Met Gala was mostly gold, with long sleeves and a plunging neckline.

The train had four shades of blue feathers, so Lively looked like she was about to take flight. She completed her look with sapphire and gold jewelry.

Lively's Versace gown for the "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" Met Gala took more than 600 hours to make.

The ornate ruby-and-gold gown was designed with a jewel-encrusted corset. She accessorized the dramatic look with a spiked headpiece, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

The gown was one of the best looks at the 2018 Met Gala.

The actor, who co-chaired the 2022 event alongside her husband Ryan Reynolds, arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a custom Versace look that changed from bronze to green to mirror the oxidation of the famous New York City landmark. The tulle dress was embroidered with crystal, metallic leather, and tri-tone copper foil.

When Lively arrived, the dress had an oversize copper bow at the hip that gave way to a long, dramatic train. The bow unraveled as Lively walked along the red carpet, becoming green.

Lively told E! on the red carpet that the front of the dress was also designed to emulate the architecture of the Empire State Building, and her Lorraine Schwartz crown was another accessory meant to mimic the Statue of Liberty.

E!'s Zanna Roberts Rassi said the green side of the train was embroidered with a celestial map inspired by the same 12 zodiac constellations painted on the ceiling of New York's Grand Central Terminal.

  • Fashion's biggest night, the Met Gala, has come and gone once again.
  • Every year, the event has a different theme, and celebrities get creative with the dress code.
  • Stars like Rihanna, Blake Lively, and Tyla have worn some of the best Met Gala looks of all time.

On May 5, some of the world's most famous people arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City for the 2025 Met Gala, celebrating Black dandyism and menswear.

The gala, which traditionally takes place on the first Monday in May, is a fundraiser for the Met's Costume Institute. It brings together actors, singers, models, influencers, billionaires, and athletes. Each year, Anna Wintour also puts together a star-studded group of Met Gala co-chairs to help promote and plan the event.

The co-chairs and other attendees always have fun with the Met Gala theme, wearing jaw-dropping looks that turn the event into fashion's biggest night.

In celebration of the event, take a look back at some of the best Met Gala looks of all time.

The gown inspired the Peter Dundas dress Kim Kardashian wore to the Met Gala in 2015.

At the 1995 Met Gala, supermodel Naomi Campbell stood out in a sparkling silver gown.

Gianni Versace designed Campbell's strapless silver gown; the model accompanied Versace to that year's gala.

"I loved this dress. It was slim-fitting and body-hugging, and it just glistened," Campbell said in a video for Vogue. "I remember when I saw this dress for the first time. It seemed like one of those dresses that you read in those fairy-tale books."

Princess Diana's Met Gala debut came shortly after finalizing her divorce from then-Prince Charles.

And she made sure to make an entrance in a silk navy-blue slip dress designed by John Galliano to pay tribute to the year's theme in honor of Christian Dior.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl wrote in her book, "William and Harry," that Diana worried the daring dress might embarrass Prince William, who was 14 years old at the time.

Sarah Jessica Parker asked McQueen to attend the 2006 Met Gala, which was themed "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion," after deciding to wear a dress by the legendary British designer.

Parker told Vogue in 2022 that she was nervous to attend the event with McQueen because she admired his work, which made it difficult to enjoy the gala.

"It wasn't a fun night. Like, it was, but it wasn't because I was so nervous. I just wanted him to be OK," she told Vogue.

Parker also told Vogue she saved every pin and piece of fabric McQueen touched during their dress fittings.

Ricci captured the "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" theme at the 2008 Met Gala with her outfit, nodding to the iconic superhero uniform silhouette.

Her sheer pink gown revealed a red leotard underneath, while the back of the dress had a red star attached to its belt.

She accessorized the dress with a matching red clutch and kept her hair and makeup simple, allowing the gown to fully shine.

Beyoncé's sheer black Givenchy gown featured a plunging neckline, a thigh-high slit, and head-to-toe sparkles.

Ty Hunter, Beyoncé's stylist, told Business Insider that the dress, made by Riccardo Tisci, was inspired by Diana Ross.

"It was simple but elegant," Hunter told BI while reflecting on Beyoncé's Met Gala looks. "In person, it was so beautiful. A lot of times, the pictures don't really give justice to the garment. It was delicate and just really, really strong. I love that look."

Beyoncé upped the glamour with dark-red lips and a netted veil, while Jay-Z opted for a classic white tuxedo. The couple would make headlines that same night after a video captured Solange Knowles, Beyoncé's sister, attacking Jay-Z in an elevator.

While naked dresses dominated the 2015 Met Gala, Rihanna made the biggest splash in a 55-pound gown.

Rihanna often stands out at the event, but her 2015 look is among her most memorable Met Gala outfits. The singer wore a custom couture cape dress by Guo Pei for the "China: Through the Looking Glass" theme.

The Fenty founder told Access Hollywood in 2020 that she circled the Met three times before getting out of the car because she was scared people would laugh at her for "doing too much."

"I was driving past the red carpet and I was just seeing gowns," she recalled. "I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm a clown, people are gonna laugh at me."

Instead, Rihanna was praised for the showstopping look and named best-dressed of the night by numerous outlets.

Solange Knowles looked like a walking piece of art while attending the Met Gala that same year.

Solange skipped the traditional gown and opted for a unique minidress by British fashion designer Giles Deacon. The sculptural dress featured a futuristic print.

"It gave the illusion of a fan," Solange told Refinery29 in 2017. "I wanted to be as respectful as possible to the theme."

Beyoncé was the last person to arrive at the 2015 Met Gala, making quite an entrance in her see-through look.

Beyoncé's sheer Givenchy dress was the ultimate naked dress of the night, as it matched the color of her skin and featured strategically placed gems.

Though Beyoncé dominated the Met steps, Ty Hunter told BI that he "did not leave her side" throughout the night because the dress was heavy.

"As light as it looked — she looks like she's butt naked, but she's not — it was the heaviest dress," he said. "Normally, I get her to the front, she goes off, and then I'll sit down somewhere. But this night, I never really left."

Beyoncé paired the ensemble with a high ponytail, ensuring the dress was the focal point of her outfit. It was the perfect way to steal the show after her elevator scandal with Jay-Z dominated headlines the year prior.

Gold crosses and ornate patches decorated the garment, which matched the year's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

The armor-style pieces Zendaya wore around her waist, neck, and shoulders gave the dress a unique edge. She also wore platform silver sandals, diamond rings, and a red-toned bob haircut.

Sparkly stars covered the gown, and an oversize choker on Jenner's neck created the illusion of a high neckline.

The mosaic-patterned gown had a massive bow on one side made of copper-colored material, which unfurled to reveal teal fabric, just as the statue changed hue over time.

The Met Gala co-chair also switched gloves when she untied the bow to match the changing fabric.

For the 2022 Met Gala, Ripley's! Believe It or Not lent Kim Kardashian the Jean Louis dress Monroe wore to serenade President John F. Kennedy for his birthday in 1962.

The sheer dress is covered in sparkly embellishments, and because of its delicate nature, Kardashian only wore it for her short walk on the red carpet. She went to extreme lengths to wear it.

Her strapless Balmain dress was covered entirely in sand. It hugged her silhouette and flowed out into a train for added drama.

Tyla also carried an hourglass instead of a purse.

Mona Patel, a philanthropist and entrepreneur, also made her Met Gala debut in 2024, tapping Law Roach to style her custom Iris van Herpen look, which had a butterfly motif.

The bodice of Patel's oatmeal dress was shaped like a butterfly and accented by panels of sheer lace lining the sides. Scallops of fabric covered the gown's dramatic train.

To complete the look, Patel wore butterfly arm cuffs that flapped their wings as she walked the red carpet.

Elle Fanning also arrived at the 2024 event in an avant-garde Balmain dress, but hers looked like it was made of glass.

Balmain designed Fanning's form-fitting gown to transform her into a glass statue.

The off-the-shoulder neckline flowed into ruching on her stomach and down to an asymmetrical, flared skirt that had a subtle slit to allow her to walk. Birds on her shoulders appeared to be holding up the dress.

As the actor told Vogue at the gala, Fanning wanted the look to honor Sleeping Beauty, whom she played in "Maleficent."

Cartier jewelry completed the look.

Domingo arrived at the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"-themed Met Gala in a blue cape with an ornate gold shoulder piece atop it. The cape, designed by Valentino, honored the late, legendary fashion journalist André Leon Talley, who wore a similar cape to the 2011 Met Gala.

On the red carpet, Domingo removed the cape, revealing gray trousers and a black-and-white checked jacket. He also wore a white vest, a striped blouse, and a black-and-white polka dot tie. He finished the look with a large flower that coordinated with the tie.

A large, feathered hat completed the dramatic outfit.

"Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell helped design Monáe's custom Thom Browne outfit, which offered two looks in one.

Like Domingo, Monáe arrived in a cape, though hers was designed to look like a person wearing a suit and holding a briefcase in front of a red backdrop.

She removed the cape as she walked the red carpet, revealing a suit with the same color scheme and an actual briefcase. Monáe also wore a hat and monocle, embracing the accessories that often define dandyism.
