I tried classic cheeseburgers from 4 major chains. The best one came with 2 burger patties coated in melted cheese.

  • Football season is a time for chain restaurants to draw in customers.
  • We tried classic cheeseburgers from four chains to determine the best option for game day.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings impressed us with its juicy, double-stacked burger.

Football season is in full swing, and restaurant chains are rolling out crowd-pleasing tailgate favorites to win over fans.

In our series "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting these chains against each other to uncover the best versions of popular game-day dishes.

Nothing says football season like a juicy, classic cheeseburger from your favorite local chain, and while chicken products are one of the biggest fast-food and casual-dining trends as we kick off 2025, the burger still reigns supreme among many US consumers.

Restaurant Business reported that limited-service chains where burgers are a core menu item generated $110 billion in total sales in 2023, more than double the sales generated by limited-service chicken chains like Popeyes and Chick-fil-A.

In 2024, casual dining chains capitalized on America's need for beef.

Chili's and Applebee's introduced value meals that highlighted burgers. Chili's added itsΒ Big Smasher, a play on the McDonald's Big Mac, to its "3 For Me" value menu, while Applebee's released the "Really Big Meal Deal," which included a chicken sandwich or bacon cheeseburger, bottomless fries, and a drink for $9.99.

"We've always had incredible burgers on our menu, but for about a year now, we've been hearing more and more frustration from fast-food fans over rising costs," Chili's director of culinary, Brian Paquette, told Business Insider last spring, adding it's one of the reasons the chain is leaning into burgers and drawing inspiration from fast-food favorites.

We ranked classic cheeseburgers from four chain restaurants β€” Applebee's, Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, and TGI Fridays β€” based on taste and value.

Here's how the four chain restaurants' cheeseburgers ranked, from our least to most favorite.

My least favorite burger came from TGI Fridays.
tgi fridays cheeseburger
The burger came on a brioche bun and had a side of fries.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the cheeseburger at the restaurant I visited in Massachusetts. It cost $12.49, excluding taxes and fees, and came with a side of french fries.

I live in New York City, but I had to travel further afield to try the chain's burger because many of my local TGI Fridays restaurants have closed.

In early November, the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and Reuters reported that it was facing $37 million in debt, which led to some underperforming restaurants closing.

The TGI Fridays location I visited in Massachusetts is locally franchised and owned, so it's not included in the larger brand's bankruptcy filing.

The cheeseburger was topped with two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and red onion.
tgi fridays cheeseburger
The burger didn't automatically come with any sauce.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger, like the other burgers I tried in this taste test, was served on a brioche bun. When I lifted the burger to examine the toppings, I noticed that the very soft bun had partially stuck to the melted cheese.

This wasn't necessarily a knock on its own, but adding a sauce or butter to the bun could have made it less dry.

There's no sauce on the burger, but there's ketchup provided on every table, or you could request mustard or ketchup on it if you desired. However, I tried it completely on its own.

The burger was a touch overdone, even though I ordered it medium.
tgi fridays cheeseburger
I thought the burger was slightly overdone.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I requested my burger to be cooked medium, but it came out closer to well-done and was quite dry. That said, I did enjoy the flavor of the meat, which I found to be peppery and well-seasoned.

The sliced tomato tasted fairly fresh, but I found the lettuce limp and forgettable. The burger had a generous serving of pickles and onions, which I enjoyed. However, overall, I found this burger to be lacking in flavor, and a layer of sauce could have gone a long way.

The fries were also well-seasoned, and I enjoyed them.

Next up was the Oldtimer with cheese from Chili's.

The Oldtimer can be ordered with or without cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At the Massachusetts location I visited, the most classic cheeseburger on Chili's menu cost $13.29, plus tax.

Though Chili's is not primarily a burger restaurant, burgers are a major part of the brand's strategy, which appears to be working.

"Over the past two and a half years, we've removed around a quarter of our menu to focus on our core four offerings: burgers, crispers, fajitas, and margaritas, which now represent 47% of our business," Kevin Hochman, the president and CEO of Chili's parent company Brinker International Inc., said in October.

In the chain's third-quarter earnings report, Chili's reported a 14% increase in same-restaurant sales and a 6.5% increase in traffic last summer compared to the same three-month period in 2023.

The Oldtimer Burger was topped with cheddar cheese, pickles, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, diced red onions, and mustard.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The cheddar cheese was perfectly melted, and the burger patty also had a nice char on the outside. The burger was definitely cooked medium and had a nice juiciness to it while remaining slightly crispy on the outside.

When I lifted the top bun, I saw a light smear of mustard on top of the cheese. While it wasn't an enormous amount of mustard, it permeated each bite.

I thought the mustard could have been dialed back a bit.

The toppings all tasted fresh, but the mustard was slightly overpowering.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The mustard was quite sharp, and while I do like mustard, it was a bit too much for me.

However, the rest of the burger really impressed me. The char on the smashed patty was perfectly crispy, and the other ingredients were fresh. The red onion brought a nice bite, and the brioche bun held everything together. I also liked the choice of shredded lettuce, which added a crispy freshness.

The fries were also solid: warm, crispy, and well-seasoned.

Overall, it was a good classic burger, but I've had Chili's burgers I've enjoyed more in the past, like the Big Smasher, which is their take on a McDonald's Big Mac, and the chain's southwestern-inspired Alex's Santa Fe burger.

My second favorite burger came from Applebee's.

The classic cheeseburger came with a gooey layer of cheese peeking out from beneath a shiny bun.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the burger as part of the chain's "2 for $2X" deal, which also allowed me to get an order of boneless wings and a chicken tender basket.

However, the burger typically costs $16.99, excluding tax, at the location I visited in Brooklyn, New York.

This year, Applebee's teamed up with the NFL as the league's official grill and bar partner, recognizing a strong overlap between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider, adding, "This season, we've been all in on the NFL."

Data collected by Applebee's in April revealed that 64% of its guests were interested in or very interested in the NFL, and around 34% had watched the NFL in the past year, which helped shape the chain's strategy for the football season, Yashinsky said.

The Classic Cheeseburger came with two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles on a brioche bun.

The two slices of cheese completely covered the beef burger patty.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

There was a thick, gooey layer of cheese melted onto the burger. I thought the two slices of cheese did a lot to elevate this burger.

The outside of the burger patty was quite dark, which made me concerned it might have been cooked beyond the medium level I requested.

However, I found the burger was supremely juicy and cooked even slightly on the side of medium-rare.

The burger was slightly less done than the others I tried. I didn't mind one bit.
applebees cheeseburger
I loved the flavor of the cheese and fresh toppings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The melted, tangy cheese covered every square inch of this burger, making for a balanced bite. The thickly sliced red onion also added a lot of flavor, and I thought the lettuce and tomato tasted fresh.

This burger didn't have any sauce, but it wasn't dry at all thanks to the cheese and buttery bun that seemed to melt in my mouth.

Though it was very similar in ingredients to the TGI Fridays burger, it just tasted better, juicier, and fresher.

My favorite burger came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

The burger came with two burger patties sandwiched between a soft bun.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the All-American Cheeseburger at my local Buffalo Wild Wings in Brooklyn, New York. It cost $14.49, excluding tax.

Since Buffalo Wild Wings is primarily known for its traditional and boneless wings, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this classic cheeseburger.

The burger came with two beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard.

The burger came coated in layers of melted cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was impressed that this burger came with two burger patties. Each patty was crispy on the outside and coated in gooey melted cheese.

When it arrived at the table, the bun was glistening, and inside was a hearty smear of mustard and mayonnaise.

The fries were tasty, thin, and well-salted, but I had to admit I preferred some of the other chains' thicker fries.

I thought this burger was a great value, and I scarfed down every delicious bite.
buffalo wild wings all american cheeseburger
The patties were crispy on the outside but juicy within.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The mayonnaise and mustard added a lot of moisture and flavor to this burger, but it truly didn't need it.

The beef patties were juicy yet crispy, and the cheese was perfectly melted, adding a tangy, savory flavor to each bite. It felt like a more elevated version of a fast-food cheeseburger, and instantly transported me back to my childhood with its classic, fresh-tasting toppings and indulgent flavor.

The addition of the second patty really enhanced the burger. For just under $15, I also thought it was the best value of all the burgers I tried.

This burger delivered a winning bite, hitting all the right notes for a satisfying meal. I would definitely go back to try more of the chain's burgers β€” football season or not.

We can afford to go to high-end restaurants, but we swear by taking our family to steakhouse chains instead

Author Terri Peters and her daughter smiling at Ruth's Chris
I've made great memories while dining at steakhouse chains with my family.

Terri Peters

  • My family enjoys going to steakhouse chains. In many ways, they're better than stand-alone spots.
  • With chains, we know what to expect, which is especially great when we're traveling.
  • I've had steaks at chains that were as good as ones from high-end restaurants.

Steakhouses are one of my husband and I's favorite places to get an extravagant dinner.

As our kids have gotten older, we've brought them along to enjoy steak dinners with us in exciting locales or as part of birthday celebrations.

Even so, our recent visits to steakhouse chains have felt like the best value for our family of four.

Although we could afford to take our teens to higher-end, independently owned steakhouses, I think we get more bang for our buck at chains like The Capital Grille or Outback Steakhouse.

Here's why steakhouse chains have become some of my family's go-to places to dine out.

Knowing which chains my kids love makes grabbing dinner a breeze β€” especially if we're traveling

Large steak on Longhorn steakhouse plate
My family has enjoyed dining at LongHorn Steakhouse.

Terri Peters

Chains aim to deliver consistent experiences, which is especially great for picky eaters and families with kids.

At chains, my teens know what to expect and look forward to it, which can minimize stress in a new place. Plus, we know they'll actually eat what they ordered if they've had it before and enjoyed it.

The first time we visited LongHorn Steakhouse was on a weekend trip to Orlando, and we've returned to other locations and had similarly positive experiences while traveling to California and Pennsylvania.

Since our first time trying Outback Steakhouse, we've gone to its locations in different cities and on various occasions for consistently good meals.

We still like to support small businesses and have our kids try unique, local cuisines when we travel, but sometimes our family is "hangry" and just needs a familiar meal.

If we're going to spend a lot on a special dinner, it's nice to know exactly what we can expect

Steak with asparagus on top from Ruth's Chris
It's nice to know what we can expect at Ruth's Chris locations around the US.

Terri Peters

I like knowing the quality and experience I can expect when returning to a chain again and again, especially when a meal is expensive.

Although trying new restaurants with my husband is fun, it's satisfying to know we can expect our $460 dinner at The Capital Grille to be the same whether we're in Baltimore or Orlando.

Since my family of four had an incredible $500 meal when we visited Ruth's Chris on Mother's Day weekend, I'd also confidently go to any of the chain's locations for any holiday celebration.

My family still talks about our meal there, and I know the level of quality and value I can expect for my money.

Really, steakhouse food is pretty similar everywhere

Ruth's Chris exterior
Returning to the same steakhouse chain over and over means our family knows exactly what we'll be getting for the money we spend.

Terri Peters

I've had meals at well-known stand-alone steakhouses in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles β€” although each was delicious, there are only so many ways to cook a steak or bake a potato.

Most of my dinners at chain steakhouses have impressed me just as much. One standout is The Capital Grille. Our experience there was on par with the ones I've had at some of the highest-of-high-end steakhouses.

In many ways, chains just make it easy for our family to have a nice dinner

Outback Steakhouse exterior
My kids know what they like to get at Outback no matter which location we visit.

Terri Peters

It's nice to go somewhere reliable when we're looking to have a nice meal, which is easy to do when most of our favorite steakhouse chains are fairly accessible across the US

The meals we've had so far have been delicious, and our experiences have remained consistent.

Our teens are still learning what they want out of a dining-out experience, and I like that chains allow them to figure that out while having consistent, clear expectations.

For now, we'll continue going to steakhouse chains when we have extra money to spend on a reliably tasty meal.

I've taken my family to 5 major steakhouse chains in the US. We enjoyed most, but one is the best by a landslide.

Author Terri Peters smiling outside of a Texas Roadhouse
My family has been to many steakhouse chains, including Texas Roadhouse.

Terri Peters

  • I've visited many major US steakhouse chains with my husband and two teenagers.
  • From a value standpoint, we liked Outback Steakhouse best β€” we got lots of food (and wine) for $165.
  • The most memorable steakhouse was The Capital Grille, where our extravagant meal cost nearly $500.

My family never ate at chain restaurants until recently when we started trying ones my teens had heard about on TikTok or from friends.

We've now eaten everywhere from Olive Garden to Bahama Breeze, but our favorite chains to try have been steakhouses.

Forever a fan of a great glass of cabernet with a steak and some classic sides, I've taken my husband and kids to places like LongHorn Steakhouse, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Outback Steakhouse, Texas Roadhouse, and The Capital Grille.

Although one has been a clear favorite for me so far, almost every meal has been top-notch and has made me a believer in the consistency and predictability of a good steakhouse chain.

We felt we got the best bang for our buck at Outback Steakhouse.
Outback menus on wood table
Outback had some crowd-favorite offerings.

Terri Peters

Chains like Texas Roadhouse, LongHorn Steakhouse, and Outback Steakhouse felt similar in price point.

On average, it cost my party of four around $160 to eat at each, but the food at Outback was the hands-down favorite for everyone in my party.

Its complimentary brown bread was the best we've had, our steaks were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and we loved the classic Bloomin' Onion appetizer.

My family of four got an appetizer, entreΓ©s, two glasses of wine, and two desserts for $165. At the time, we ordered more than we'd normally eat, so I know we could return and spend even less while still getting a really good meal.

Ruth's Chris had the best classic steakhouse sides.

We loved trying a range of side dishes at Ruth's Chris.

Terri Peters

Although Ruth's Chris was one of the more pricey steakhouses we've visited, our $500 meal felt worth it for the classy atmosphere, delicious food, and impressive wine list.

The chain's side dishes were particularly impressive. My favorite steakhouse side dish is creamed spinach, and the tasty version at Ruth's Chris was everything I could hope for.

The mashed potatoes we had there were also superb, as were the sauteΓ©d mushrooms β€” another steakhouse staple.

We'd absolutely return here for a special occasion.

Eating at LongHorn Steakhouse changed the way we order ribeye.

LongHorn Steakhouse impressed us with its Outlaw Ribeye.

Terri Peters

Our dinner at LongHorn felt like a great value because we enjoyed our generously-portioned meals so much β€” but a highlight of our dinner was a valuable tip.

LongHorn serves a $30 ribeye, and when my husband ordered his medium rare, the server took a moment to educate us about that particular cut of meat.

Because of the fat in a ribeye, he explained, the meat becomes more buttery and tender when it's cooked to a medium temperature.

My husband switched his order, and the resulting ribeye was delicious. Although we still order cuts like filet cooked medium rare, his tip stuck with us and we now cook and order our ribeyes medium.

I think Texas Roadhouse would be best for loud groups or families with young kids.
Hand holding Texas Roadhouse menu in front of wood paneling in restaurant
Texas Roadhouse seems like a good spot for families.

Terri Peters

Of the steakhouse chains I've been to, Texas Roadhouse had my least-favorite overall atmosphere. When we visited, it felt loud, crowded, and chaotic.

Several times during our meal, our conversation was interrupted by servers loudly clapping and singing to people who were there for a birthday dinner. We were also surrounded by many families with young children, who could understandably get a bit noisy.

Texas Roadhouse doesn't have a high-end atmosphere like Ruth's Chris or The Capital Grille, but I'd go a step further and say it's in a class below Outback and LongHorn.

Although the chain had a nicely varied menu, our group found the food to be just OK.

Overall, I think Texas Roadhouse is better suited for families with kids and groups who don't mind a noisier dining experience.

The Capital Grille is the steakhouse I'd visit every weekend if I could.
Terri Peters and her family smiling at Capital Grille
We had a great experience at The Capital Grille.

Terri Peters

Of all the steakhouse chains I've visited, The Capital Grille was my favorite with its delicious food, extremely attentive staff, and relaxing-but-elegant ambiance.

From the moment we walked into the restaurant, my family felt relaxed and taken care of.

Through several courses β€” which included some of the best calamari I've ever eaten and a few perfect wine pairings β€” we kept chatting about what a wonderful experience we were having.

The service and atmosphere alone made this steakhouse my favorite, and the food only sealed the deal.

We tried everything from surf and turf to filet au poivre and loved every bite. My son, who always orders burgers at steakhouses, said The Capital Grille served the best he's had.

Our meal cost over $500 after tax and tip, so going here wouldn't fit into our weekly dining out budget. Still, I'd request dinner at The Capital Grille for a special occasion or return for date night with just my husband to save a few hundred dollars.

Everything I order for my family at Dunkin' as a dietitian following the Mediterranean diet

outside a dunkin donuts location
With so many options, it can be hard to know what the best things to order at Dunkin' are.

Helen89/Shutterstock

  • As a dietitian, I follow the Mediterranean diet, but that doesn't mean my family never eats out.
  • Dunkin' is an easy place to grab breakfast when we're in a rush.
  • I try to avoid overly sugary drinks, but I do order the occasional doughnut as a treat.

As a dietitian who tries to follow the Mediterranean diet, I eat a lot of veggies, beans, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

However, in a pinch, my family and I sometimes have to lean on fast food, especially when we're traveling.

When I visit Dunkin' with my 9-year-old daughter and my husband, I opt for protein-rich options and try to limit any added sugar and sodium.

Here's what I ordered for everyone on our last Dunkin' run.

A hot latte gives me a kick of caffeine.
small hot latte from dunkin
I try to avoid overly sugary coffee drinks.

Lauren Manaker

It's tempting to go for a flavored coffee at Dunkin', but some of them have more sugar than a doughnut.

For example, a small Dunkin' hot coffee with caramel-swirl flavoring has 26 grams of added sugar, while a vanilla sprinkle doughnut only has 16 grams.

Instead, I skip the added sweeteners. Since some dairy is permitted on the Mediterranean diet, a classic latte made with 2% milk gives me the caffeine boost I need without a sugar rush.

Plus, dairy milk adds some protein and nutrients (like calcium).

I'm a fan of the omelet bites.
omelet bites from dunkin
Dunkin' shapes its egg bites like little doughnuts.

Lauren Manaker

Although they're processed β€” aka not very Mediterranean-diet friendly β€” I love Dunkin's omelet bites for a protein-packed breakfast.

Two of the egg white and veggie bites contain a whopping 13 grams of protein, which keeps me full. As a bonus, they help me get a small start on my daily veggie goals.

My husband's beverage of choice is iced green tea.
large iced green tea at dunkin
He tends to get a larger size of green tea.

Lauren Manaker

My husband, who has elevated blood pressure, enjoys an unsweetened green iced tea.

Some research suggests that green tea may help lower blood pressure, particularly in individuals with hypertension. The catechins and other bioactive compounds are associated with helping relax blood vessels, promote healthy blood flow, and reduce the strain on the cardiovascular system.

The iced, unsweetened version at Dunkin' has no sugar, and there's little to it in terms of calories and sodium, so he tends to get a larger size.

Dunkin's avocado toast is also a good pick for my husband.

Avocados are a good source of potassium.

Lauren Manaker

Avocado toast is my husband's top food pick at Dunkin', which is convenient for his health needs and our diet.

Avocados are a good source of potassium, a mineral that's also been found to help lower blood pressure. Dunkin's avocado toast contains 371 milligrams of potassium, which is over 10% of the daily recommended intake for men.

Pairing avocado with whole-grain toast provides him with a satisfying on-the-go option that has heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, 6 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of protein.

Orange juice is my daughter's drink of choice.
hand holding a bottle of simply orange juice
The orange juice at my Dunkin' doesn't have added sugar, but it does have natural sugar.

Lauren Manaker

Although my daughter doesn't follow any kind of strict diet, I often feed her along the principles of the Mediterranean diet since that's how my husband and I eat.

Even though the juice contains quite a bit of natural sugar from the fruit, I'm OK with her drinking a serving of orange juice (which I portion out from the slightly larger Simply Orange bottle sold at my Dunkin').

It provides her with nutrients like vitamin C and antioxidants. Plus, it helps her get closer to her fruit quota for the day.

She likes the wake-up wrap.
wake up wrap from dunkin
My daughter gets Dunkin's wake-up wrap with just egg and cheese.

Lauren Manaker

It's not very Mediterranean-diet friendly, but my daughter likes the egg-and-cheese wake-up wrap at Dunkin'.

The serving is relatively tiny, and there isn't a whole grain or veggie in sight, but I'm happy that the 7 grams of protein help keep her satisfied when we're in a pinch.

Plus, the eggs add some vital nutrients, like choline, which is essential to supporting brain health.

I firmly believe an occasional treat can fit into a balanced diet.
sprinkle doughnut from dunkin
We shared a doughnut as a treat.

Lauren Manaker

Although the Mediterranean diet doesn't allow for a lot of processed foods or added sugars, an occasional treat isn't going to completely throw us off.

Dunkin' is known for its doughnuts, so we usually let our daughter pick the variety and split one between the three of us.

I think it's OK to sometimes eat food purely for the pleasure it provides. By sharing, we reduce the risk of overindulging without feeling deprived.

I tried Buffalo chicken wings from 5 major chains and the sauciest ones came out on top

wingstop original hot wings
We tried Buffalo chicken wings from five well-known chain restaurants to determine a winner for football season.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • Casual-dining chains often capitalize on football season to draw in customers.
  • We tried Buffalo chicken wings from five chains to determine the best option for game day.
  • Wingstop surprised us with its saucy, juicy wings at the right price point.

As football season kicks off, restaurant chains are rolling out crowd-pleasing tailgate favorites to win over fans.

In a new series, "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting these chains against each other to uncover the best versions of popular game-day dishes.

Whether you're deciding which chain has the best chicken wings or offers the best value for delivery, this guide will help you make the most of your football season dining experience.

Buffalo chicken wings arguably reign supreme among the most popular game-day foods and are practically synonymous with football season.

A report by the National Chicken Council estimated Americans would eat 1.45 billion chicken wings during the 2024 Super Bowl. Many chain restaurants embrace wings' popularity all football season long with promotional deals, family-sized bundles, and free delivery.

Chains that specialize in chicken wings, such asΒ Wingstop, are also experiencing significant growth. In October 2024, the chain, which focuses its menu on bone-in chicken wings, boneless wings, and other chicken items, announcedΒ 38.8% year-over-year revenue growth.

Wingstop has also expanded its presence by opening 273 new locations across the US in the past year, bringing its total number of US restaurants to 2,064 at the end of the third quarter.

We ranked Buffalo chicken wings from five chain restaurants β€” Applebee's, Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, TGI Fridays, and Wingstop β€” based on taste and value.

Here's how the five chain restaurants' Buffalo wings ranked, from our least to most favorite.

My least favorite Buffalo wings came from TGI Fridays.
tgi fridays buffalo wings

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered an eight-count of bone-in traditional Buffalo wings at the restaurant I visited in Massachusetts. They cost $12.19, excluding taxes and fees, and came with celery sticks and sides of ranch and blue cheese.

I live in New York City, but I had to travel further afield to try the chain's wings because many of my local TGI Fridays restaurants have closed.

The wings were crispy but a little under-sauced.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Unlike some of the other chains I tried, TGI Fridays also doesn't appear to make its own Buffalo sauce.

On the menu, it's advertised as simply Frank's Red Hot Buffalo. While I do like that brand of sauce, I could easily make the same wings at home, which made it feel less unique.

I also thought they were slightly smaller than some of the other wings I tried.

Business Insider reached out to TGI Fridays for comment but did not receive a response.

The meat inside was tender, but the Buffalo flavor just wasn't there.
tgi fridays buffalo wings

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Though I liked the crispy skin and texture of these chicken wings, as well as the tender meat inside, I thought they were lacking in sauce and flavor.

Overall, I probably wouldn't order these again.

The next stop I tried was Applebee's.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At my local Applebee's in Brooklyn, an order of nine classic bone-in wings costs $18.99, excluding tax and fees. They came with celery sticks and sides of ranch and blue cheese.

Applebee's partnered with the NFL this year as the league's official grill and bar partner after finding a major crossover between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider.

Since Buffalo wings are a favorite among football fanatics, I was excited to see how the chain fared.

The wings were super crispy and the largest out of all that I tried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The wings were a rich red-brown color and fried to a crisp.

The wings were juicy, and the sauce had a good buttery flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Buffalo sauce had a nice balance between the heat and the more savory, buttery flavor, making for a balanced bite. I thought the meat inside was pretty juicy, and I loved the sheer size of these wings.

My only real complaint was the price β€” $18.99 for a plate of wings felt pretty pricey, even though the wings were on the larger side. However, the price will vary depending on which location you visit.

Chili's landed squarely in the middle with its crispy Buffalo wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

At the Massachusetts location I visited, an eight-count of bone-in Buffalo wings cost $14.99, excluding tax and fees. They came with two dipping sauces: ranch and blue cheese.

However, the wings cost slightly more, $17.99, at the Chili's location I typically visit in Queens, New York.

I thought these wings were flavorful and juicy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I've tried these wings before and commented that they could have been slightly saucier and crispier. However, when I tried them this second time, I didn't encounter those issues.

They were perfectly crispy and almost dripping in sauce.

The wings had a generous amount of meat inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Buffalo sauce had a strong buttery flavor with just the right amount of heat. The chain is also known for its ranch dipping sauce, which paired very nicely with the wings.

Though the wings were smaller, I thought they packed more flavor than the ones from Applebee's and TGI Fridays.

The second-best Buffalo wings came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chain's Buffalo bone-in wings are arguably Buffalo Wild Wings' most famous menu item, so I was eager to see how they would stack up against other chain restaurants' wings. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

I ordered a six-count of traditional Buffalo wings through the Buffalo Wild Wings app for $12.49, excluding tax and fees, and a side of ranch.

The wings were small length-wise but had a lot of meat on them.

The wings were crispy and had a light coating of Buffalo sauce that covered every part of the wings.

There was a selection of both drumsticks and flats, but I noticed that the drums were particularly meaty.

I loved the flavor of the Buffalo sauce and thought the chicken meat was moist.

The chicken meat inside the wing was moist and tender, and the crispy skin and slightly sweet, just-spicy-enough sauce added a lot of flavor. Overall, these were really solid Buffalo wings.

I also thought these wings were a great value for the money and would definitely order them again.

My favorite wings I tried were from Wingstop.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered 10 classic bone-in wings for $17.29, excluding tax and fees.

Wingstop doesn't offer Buffalo sauce on its menu, but it does have its Original Hot sauce, which is the chain's version of Buffalo. I ordered them with a side of ranch.

The wings came drenched in the bright-red sauce but were still supremely crispy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sticky sauce clung to my fingers as I ate these wings, which were the perfect size: not too big, not too small, and just the right amount of tender chicken meat.

The meat was tender and the spicy hot sauce blew me away.

The sauce had a lot of levels, balancing between a strong vinegar flavor, to buttery, and topped off with a layer of spice that was slightly smoky yet not overpowering.

The Wingstop wings stood out as the spiciest among all the chains I tried. However, the heat didn't overpower the flavor β€” instead, it enhanced it.

Each element, from the crispy seasoned skin to the tangy undertones of the sauce, came through distinctly. These wings balanced bold, spicy flavor with a depth of taste, making them the best chain-restaurant Buffalo wings I tried.

I tried chicken tenders from 5 major chain restaurants, and one emerged as the MVP

  • Casual-dining chains understand the importance of embracing football season to attract customers.
  • We tried chicken tenders from five chains to determine the best option for game day.
  • Chili's and Buffalo Wild Wings impressed us the most with their crispy and customizable tenders.

Football season is here, and restaurant chains are stepping up to serve crowd-pleasing tailgate favorites.

In a new series, "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting some of these chains against each other to determine which makes the best versions of popular game-day foods.

If you're wondering what to order the next time you catch the game at a local Chili's or Buffalo Wild Wings, or if you're uncertain which chain offers the best value when ordering in, this guide will help you make the most of your football season dining experience.

Chain restaurants know the value of embracing football season to attract customers, from offering family-style and game-night combos during football season to leaning into commercial advertising during televised games.

For the first edition of "Tailgate Taste-off," we ranked chicken tenders from five chain restaurants β€” Applebee's, Chili's, Buffalo Wild Wings, TGI Fridays, and Wingstop β€” based on taste and value.

Here's how the five chain restaurants' chicken tenders ranked, from our least to most favorite.

My least favorite chicken tenders came from Wingstop.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Founded in 1994 in Garland, Texas, Wingstop has grown a cult following over the years for its chicken offerings, from its wings to its recently released chicken sandwich, which has caught the attention of Gen-Z consumers.

Wingstop does have dine-in options, but I felt it was more authentic to the Wingstop experience to order in.

I ordered four crispy tenders plain with a side of honey mustard sauce from my local Wingstop in Brooklyn, New York, for $10.39, excluding tax and fees.

The chicken tenders had a thick layer of seasoned breading on the outside.

I ordered these tenders plain, but they also come in all of the chain's signature sauces, from lemon pepper to Buffalo. I liked the ability to customize my tenders according to my preferences.

The tenders paired well with the honey mustard, which was creamy and had an ideal level of tanginess. I also thought the classic breading had a nice amount of flavor and peppery seasoning.

However, I was disappointed by the amount of meat inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Each Wingstop tender had a different amount of juicy chicken meat, with some pieces being thicker and more satisfying than others. While the flavor was spot-on, I found myself wishing there was a bit more meat in each bite to really hit the mark.

These tenders would make a decent addition to a spread of wings from Wingstop, especially for folks turned off by spicy food.

Next time I order from Wingstop, I'll probably stick to their specialty: their wings.

Business Insider reached out to Wingstop for comment but did not receive a response before publication.

Applebee's, the NFL's official grill and bar partner, came in fourth with its crispy breaded chicken tenders.
applebees chicken tenders

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I visited my local Applebee's in Brooklyn, New York, to try these chicken tenders.

Applebee's partnered with the NFL this year as the league's official grill and bar partner after finding a major crossover between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider, adding, "This season, we've been all in on the NFL."

Data collected by Applebee's in April showed that 64% of its guests were interested in or very interested in the NFL, and about 34% had watched the NFL in the last 12 months, which informed the chain's football season strategy, Yashinsky said.

While the chain is consistently lauded for its boneless wings, I haven't heard much about its chicken tenders.

At my location, the chicken tender plate typically costs $12.99, excluding tax and fees. However, I ordered them as part of the chain's "2 for $2X" deal, which also allowed me to get an order of boneless wings and a classic cheeseburger.

I was pretty disappointed by the size of these chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

They were really crispy, but slightly on the smaller side. The serving size of the honey mustard was also smaller than the Wingstop version.

However, unlike Wingstop, these chicken tenders came with a generous serving of fries, which I thought made this meal an excellent value.

These chicken tenders had a surprisingly good amount of chicken meat inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I appreciated the seasoning on the breading, which was a highlight since this chain serves its tenders plain without coating them in signature sauces like those available at Wingstop, Chili's, or Buffalo Wild Wings.

My only complaint, other than the smaller size of the chicken tenders, was justΒ howΒ fried they were. I thought the breading was a little overcooked, to the point that it left a dry, almost burned taste in my mouth.

However, this could have just been the batch I received and not standard for all Applebee's chicken tenders. I reached out to Applebee's about my experience, but they did not respond before publication.

Landing squarely in the middle of the ranking was TGI Fridays.

TGI Fridays chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

TGI Fridays has run into financial trouble in recent months. In early November, the chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, andΒ ReutersΒ reported that it was facing $37 million in debt, which led to some underperforming restaurants closing.

The TGI Fridays location I visited in Massachusetts is locally franchised and owned, so it's not included in the larger brand's bankruptcy filing.

I ordered a four-piece tender meal for $15.69, excluding tax and fees. It came with a side β€” I opted for mac and cheese β€” and honey mustard.

These chicken tenders were crispy without being over-fried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

They still had the signature finger shape I typically look for in a chicken tender.

This honey-mustard dipping sauce was less creamy compared to the other chains I tried. However, I was mostly judging the chicken tenders on their own, not the sauces they came with.

The chicken tenders were juicy, with each bite revealing tender, flavorful meat that fell apart.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was impressed by these chicken tenders and would definitely order them again the next time I visit TGI Fridays for game day or just a standard dinner out.

However, I thought the breading was just slightly too thick and underseasoned to rank them higher than the top two chains.

Business Insider reached out to TGI Fridays for comment but did not receive a response before publication.

Chili's served my second-favorite chain-restaurant chicken tenders.
chilis grill and bar chicken crisper
Chili's chicken tenders.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Chili's has been killing the game lately β€” with traffic and sales on the upswing leading up to football season, the chain is arguably in a league of its own.

The chain told BI in April that a return to commercial advertising has been a major part of the brand's efforts to increase brand awareness over the past couple of years. This includes during sports seasons. Sports Business Journal reported that in 2023, Chili's spent 38% of its TV advertising budget on live NFL action during games.

Value has also been a focus for the chain in the past year. It has expanded its "3 For Me" menu and offers happy-hour beers starting at $3.

"We're focused on creating a lively, social atmosphere that makes Chili's a great spot to watch the game," Chili's chief marketing officer George Felix told BI.

"Of course, we understand that some people prefer to watch the game from the comfort of home, which is why we also offer everyday favorites and party platters for takeout and delivery," he added.

I ordered a four-count of Chicken Crispers for $14.99, excluding tax and fees. The meal also included fries, mac and cheese, and two sauces.

This was my first time ordering Chili's plain chicken crispers.

The tenders are available in a variety of flavors, such as Nashville Hot, Honey Chipotle, Buffalo Ranch, barbecue, and Buffalo.

I paired my chicken tenders with ranch and honey mustard and was impressed by the creaminess and flavor of both sauces. However, the chicken tenders really hit it out of the park.

They were perfectly crispy, and the breading had a good amount of seasoning to give it flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was peppery, slightly salty, and just crispy enough to not overpower the chicken meat inside. Plus, for the price, you also get a lot of food.

While I'd probably opt for smothering these chicken tenders in a signature sauce next time, they also hold up on their own with their crispy breading and succulent chicken meat.

The best chain-restaurant chicken tenders came from Buffalo Wild Wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Buffalo Wild Wings was founded in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio, by Jim Disbrow and Scott Lowery, who started the restaurant with the goal of bringing authentic Buffalo-style chicken wings to the area.

The chain has since expanded to over 1,200 locations and offers 21 different sauce options, including the chain's signature Buffalo sauce, for its classic bone-in wings, boneless wings, and tenders.

A five-count of the chain's hand-breaded tenders with no sauce or dry rub and fries typically costs $17.99, excluding tax and fees.

However, Buffalo Wild Wings was running a promotion that allowed me to order 15 boneless wings, five tenders, ranch or blue cheese dipping sauces, and fries for $19.99, so I chose that deal instead.

The first thing I noticed about BWW's chicken tenders was the crispy, crunchy texture.
buffalo wild wings chicken tenders

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

These chicken tenders had tiny pieces of fried breading that enhanced the texture of each bite and paired well with the tangy and fresh ranch dipping sauce provided.

The chicken tenders themselves were well-seasoned and sizable β€” they were probably the largest chicken tenders I tried, length-wise, and also the thickest.

The breading had the most distinctive flavor out of all the tenders I tried.

The chicken was extremely tender and shreddable, which stood out to me.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chicken meat inside was moist and high-quality, in my opinion. These tenders from Buffalo Wild Wings also tasted the most homemade to me, which I attributed to the flaky, hand-breaded coating.

The crispy breading added a satisfying crunch without being too thick, complementing the tender, juicy chicken inside. Every bite struck the perfect balance, making these feel less like a mass-produced product from a chain restaurant and more like something prepared fresh in a home kitchen.

All of the chicken tenders I tried had something tasty to offer for game-day and tailgating season. But in the end, Buffalo Wild Wings was the real MVP.
