We tried Taco Bell's new chicken nuggets, and chains like Chick-fil-A and Popeyes should be worried

  • Taco Bell released its long-awaited crispy chicken nuggets nationwide on Thursday.
  • The nuggets feature all-white chicken breast meat marinated in a jalapeño buttermilk.
  • We thought Taco Bell's nuggets were crispy, juicy, and delicious. We also loved the new dipping sauces.

From birria-style tacos to a crunchy twist on chicken empanadas, Taco Bell is always finding new ways to mix things up.

Now, the chain is putting its own spin on an essential fast-food menu item — the almighty chicken nugget. And we think it's safe to say that McDonald's, Popeyes, and Chick-fil-A should be worried.

Here's what we thought of Taco Bell's chicken nuggets and the chain's three new dipping sauces, which were added to menus nationwide on Thursday.

Chicken is indisputably having a moment in fast food right now, and Taco Bell has appeared to take notice.

Just take a look at the success of Raising Cane's. The chain, known for its focus on chicken tenders and a limited menu featuring sides like coleslaw and Texas toast, has become one of the fastest-growing fast-food brands in the US. Bloomberg reported that the chain brought in over $2.3 billion in revenue during the first half of 2024, reflecting a 30% increase from the previous year.

When we first got to try Taco Bell's new chicken nuggets at the chain's headquarters in Irvine, California, we learned that the beloved fast-food brand had set out to create an "elevated" chicken nugget to compete in the crowded market.

"This is truly a very premium nugget," Mira Leon, a member of the product development team, told us during a tasting at the secret test kitchen. "It's not a chicken nugget patty you might get at some fast-food restaurants. This is very much more elevated."

"This is real chicken," added chef Brett Pluskalowski, who works on Taco Bell's food innovation team. "When you go to McDonald's, that's not what you see."

Taco Bell developed three sauces to pair with its chicken nuggets.

There are three new sauce options to choose from.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The jalapeño honey mustard combines honey and hot mustard for a sweet and tangy dipping sauce, while Bell Sauce features red chilies mixed with tomatoes, garlic, and onions.

The newest sauce, the Fire Ranch sauce, is a collaboration with Hidden Valley — the first-ever ranch partnership for Taco Bell. It mixes the chain's signature Fire hot sauce with Hidden Valley Ranch.

The nuggets were presented in a purple box with Taco Bell branding.

The new chicken nuggets feature all-white chicken breast meat marinated in spiced jalapeño buttermilk and coated with a special crispy breading made from breadcrumbs and tortilla chips.

The nuggets are $3.99 for a five-piece order and one dipping sauce or $6.99 for a 10-piece order with two dipping sauces, though prices may vary depending on location.

Taco Bell's crispy chicken nuggets immediately won us over.

Anneta: Chicken nuggets were my favorite thing to eat as a kid (groundbreaking, I know), and I've tried dozens of iterations from different chains and restaurants — many of them soggy, bland, or just forgettable.

Taco Bell's chicken nuggets are none of the above. The meat tasted juicy and fresh and was clearly premium. The breading was true to the "crispy" name, providing a super satisfying crunch that gave way to the tender meat underneath. There was actually texture, which is more than I can say for some other very popular chains' nuggets.

I tried these nuggets during a tasting that featured six different menu items, and I still couldn't resist finishing the entire box. They were really that good.

Erin: These chicken nuggets, which come coated in a blend of breadcrumbs and crunchy tortilla chips, really impressed me with their texture and well-balanced flavor. When I first held one in my hand, I worried it would be hard to bite into — it had some weight to it. However, when I bit in, I found juicy, flavorful meat inside.

They were salty, with a subtle corn taste from the tortilla-chip breading, and reminded me more of a boneless wing than a chicken nugget. I also liked how the outer breading wasn't completely uniform. You could clearly see the tiny pieces of tortilla chips that made up the breading.

The sauces paired with the crispy chicken nuggets were also unique, creative, and super delicious.

We liked how the Taco Bell chicken nuggets paired with all three sauces.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Anneta: I was a fan of both the Bell Sauce and the jalapeño honey mustard, which had very different flavor profiles. The Bell Sauce carried a smokiness that reminded me of barbecue sauce, while the jalapeño honey mustard was deliciously creamy with a zingy kick.

Erin: I was a fan of all three sauces, but the jalapeño honey mustard and Fire Ranch stole the show for me. The jalapeño honey mustard was the perfect balance between a classic, tangy honey mustard and a slight kick of heat from the jalapeño flavor. I also quickly noted that this sauce actually tasted like I was biting into a real jalapeño pepper, unlike some sauces that say they're flavored with jalapeño but just taste generically spicy.

The Fire Ranch was a good balance between creamy and a slight kick from the Fire sauce, but it didn't have as much heat as the other two sauces. The Bell Sauce was also good and reminded me of a chipotle aioli. It was more smoky than spicy.

We think Taco Bell's chicken nuggets are the best of any fast-food chain.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It's been years since the fast-food chains were embroiled in the chicken sandwich wars. But what they should really be worried about now is Taco Bell coming for their nugget crown.

The crispy chicken nuggets and their new sauces taste elevated, and it's clear that Taco Bell's big swings and risks are paying off.

The menu continues to feel fresh and exciting at a time when so many other chains are sticking to the norm. During the 2023 tasting, one of Taco Bell's representatives explained that the nuggets were also designed for people who don't like tacos but are along for the drive-thru ride — which is an extremely smart strategy move.

People might think Taco Bell has no place in the nugget space, but it's been delivering delicious chicken for a long time, and chicken chains should be a little scared.

Starbucks' new CEO said he wants to improve work for its baristas. They aren't happy yet.

  • Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has talked about improving conditions for baristas.
  • A potential strike at some Starbucks stores represents a test on that front for the new CEO.
  • Niccol has made some operational changes, but Starbucks Workers United wants better pay.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has talked about improving working conditions for the company's baristas.

Now, as thousands of them prepare for a potential strike, Niccol faces a test of that commitment.

Baristas who are part of Starbucks Workers United, which represents about 10,000 Starbucks workers in the US, voted to authorize a strike, the union said on Tuesday. About 98% of members voted in favor of action, though they haven't selected a walkout date, according to the union.

The union said Tuesday that it's focused on winning better raises for its members. It also wants to resolve hundreds of unfair labor practice charges, or ULPs, filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

The contract negotiations predate Niccol's arrival at Starbucks in September. Starbucks and the union have been at odds for three years. The first Starbucks store to unionize — a location in Buffalo, New York — was organized in 2021. The parties restarted talks in April after about a year of no meetings and have struck agreements on some provisions of the contract.

Starbucks and union representatives continued to bargain on Wednesday, a spokesperson for Starbucks Workers United told Business Insider.

"It is disappointing that the union is considering a strike rather than focusing on what have been extremely productive negotiations," Starbucks spokesperson Phil Gee said. "Since April, we've scheduled and attended more than eight multi-day bargaining sessions where we've reached thirty meaningful agreements on dozens of topics Workers United delegates told us were important to them, including many economic issues."

Since becoming Starbucks CEO, Niccol has said he sees opportunities to improve some operational aspects of baristas' working conditions as part of a broader push to revitalize sales. In an open letter in his first week as leader, he said the company would focus on "empowering our baristas to take care of our customers" and that he wanted to make it "the best place to work, with career opportunities and a clear path to growth."

Some Starbucks workers have told BI that their stores are understaffed, including during some of the busiest times of the day, such as the morning and after-school rushes. Other workers have said that Starbucks' frequent promotions for app users result in a crush of mobile orders that they struggle to prepare in just a few minutes.

Niccol's early actions at Starbucks have included fixes to some of those issues, such as rolling back the frequency of promotions and adjusting staffing, he said on an earnings call in October. Starbucks also plans to bring back self-service milk and other condiments at its stores in 2025 to lighten some of the barista load.

One sign of progress came on Monday, when Starbucks said it would offer employees up to 18 weeks of paid parental leave — triple its current benefit of six weeks. Employees represented by Starbucks Workers United had previously proposed doubling the paid time off for parents.

On Tuesday, Starbucks Workers United said that the company had yet to agree to make changes to other aspects of workers' jobs. The union represents baristas at about 500 Starbucks stores.

"It's time to finalize a foundational framework that includes meaningful investments in baristas and to resolve unfair labor practice charges," Silvia Baldwin, a Starbucks barista in Philadelphia barista and bargaining delegate, said on Tuesday.

Starbucks spokesperson Gee said: "We remain committed to working together and committed to reaching a final framework agreement. This is our goal."

Economic experts pan Hochul’s ‘inflationary’ ‘inflation refunds’: ‘Not difficult math’

Several economic experts panned New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s "inflation refunds" she plans to distribute to qualifying New Yorkers as part of her 2025 State of the State initiative.

Last week, Hochul proposed $3 billion in direct payments to about half of the Empire State’s 19 million residents: $300 for single taxpayers making up to $150,000 per year and $500 for joint filers making twice that.

"Because of inflation, New York has generated unprecedented revenues through the sales tax — now, we're returning that cash back to middle class families," Hochul said in a statement announcing the proposal.

However, some economists and economic experts, like Andy Puzder, said the move simply "redistributes [money] to people so the people will vote for them."

REPUBLICANS RIP HOCHUL'S INFLATION REFUNDS AS ‘BRIBE TO MAKE’ NY'ERS ‘LIKE HER’

"If you really wanted to help everybody, and if you have an excess of sales taxes, then you reduce the sales tax," added Puzder, the former CEO of the parent company of Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr., CKE Restaurants. "It’s not difficult math," he added.

Puzder is a lecturer on economics and a senior public policy fellow at Pepperdine University who was considered for Labor secretary in the first Trump administration.

In his work at CKE Restaurants, Puzder increased the average franchise sales volume for the then-struggling Hardee’s from $715,000 in 2001 to more than $1 million a decade later.

The U.S. economy has been in trouble because of the same types of policies forwarded by Hochul and other tax-and-spend Democrats, he said – adding that President Biden’s American Rescue Plan was what lit the fuse on nationwide inflation in the first place.

"If you reduce taxes, fewer people will also be leaving the state," he added, as New York shed another population-based House seat and electoral vote in the decennial census.

Puzder noted a few top Democrats have warned their own leaders against such "refunds" from the government, citing former President Bill Clinton’s Treasury chief Lawrence Summers cautioning the Biden administration that similar handouts in 2021 would drive up inflation.

HOCHUL SPARKS BIPARTISAN OUTRAGE OVER CONGESTION PRICING REBOOT AS DEMS WORRIED TRUMP WOULD BLOCK IT

Former Rep. Dave Brat, R-Va., an economist and currently vice provost of Liberty University in Lynchburg, cited Nobel laureate Milton Friedman’s assertion that inflation is a monetary phenomenon.

Therefore, he said, in Hochul’s case, the better fix for inflation lies not in Albany, but in Manhattan.

"Inflation has to do with how much money the Federal Reserve prints. If she wants to give people money back from the government, that’s fine – but she’s in a prominent position in New York in that the Fed has one of its chief desks there and if you want to solve inflation, you go to the Federal Reserve."

He added that $500 for a family is a "trivial, symbolic move against a massive, hidden tax," noting that with an estimated 22% real-inflation rate over the past four years, $500 in 2020 purchasing power is only worth $390.

Brat added that Democrats’ penchant for such "refunds" put Republicans at a consistent political disadvantage because the GOP essentially has to "compete against Santa Claus" handing out presents versus the right warning the public to "eat their spinach."

Economist EJ Antoni echoed some of the sentiment about the refunds being inflationary themselves, saying that what got the U.S. into inflation in the first place was too much government spending.

"So this idea that we're going to add on another government expenditure, you're essentially just creating a feedback loop," Antoni said.

"Now, that's not to say that New York State alone is going to cause inflation. Inflation comes from the federal government, because the federal government is the one that can't create money, can print money out of nothing. But at the same time, you're still talking about increasing the cost of living for New Yorkers, just in a different way," he said.

"Any additional government spending is going to have to be paid for one way or another."

Antoni added he could see such payments to the public "snowballing" into more and more payments down the line, which in turn would lead to higher taxes being needed to fund the handouts.

Antoni also said Hochul’s proposal differs from then-President Donald Trump’s COVID-era checks, because the latter came during a time people needed "money to survive" amid stay-at-home orders and various shutdowns of job sectors.

"If the issue is that we need to reduce people's cost of living, the best way to do that would just be to reduce their taxes, not have another payment by the government," he said.

Fox News Digital also reached out to the left-leaning Brookings Institution for a further diverse viewpoint on Hochul’s move.

Fox News Digital also reached out to Hochul's office for comment but did not receive a response by press time.

Chipotle's new CEO is trying to keep robots out of your burrito assembly line

  • Chipotle's CEO Scott Boatwright said he values the human touch in the chain's assembly lines.
  • He said automation will likely be contained "in the digital system only."
  • The chain has been criticized for delivering inconsistent portions to customers.

Chipotle's CEO wants to make sure your burrito is made by hand for as long as possible.

In a podcast interview with Yahoo Finance's "Opening Bid," released on Friday, host Brian Sozzi and CEO Scott Boatwright discussed topics including automation and modernization at Chipotle.

Boatwright, who became the fast food chain's interim CEO in November after his predecessor Brian Niccol left to lead Starbucks, said Chipotle intends to "leverage that automation in the digital system only."

"We still believe the best way to Chipotle is down the line with a team member, highly customized, great variety, big beautiful burritos and bowls down the line," he added.

Boatwright said human interaction is "a core equity of the Chipotle brand."

The brand has dipped a toe into automation: Last July, it announced that it had tapped a robot called "Autocado" to cut, core, and peel avocados, reducing the amount of time needed for the task by half.

It also announced a partnership with Hyphen, a San Jose-based food technology startup. In 2023, the startup told BI that its robotics could crank out up to 180 bowls per hour, six times more than human workers' capabilities.

Criticism over portion sizes

The chain was criticized this year after analysts accused it of skimping on portion sizes.

In June, Fortune reported that Wells Fargo analysts had ordered 75 burrito bowls from eight different locations in New York City and weighed them to check for consistency.

The analysts wrote that among the bowls ordered in-store, the heaviest bowl weighed 47% more than the lightest.

Danilo Gargiulo, a senior analyst of restaurants at AllianceBernstein, told BI in July that using robots in the assembly line would not be a good solution for portion control, as the in-store experience was "part of the secret sauce of Chipotle."

"It's part of the experience of consumers to go there, check out what they have, and ask a person, 'Hey, can I have a little bit more, please?' Or mix up the ingredients as you wish," Gargiulo said.

In the last fiscal quarter, Chipotle reported that its commitment to ensuring consistent portions had taken a toll on its profitability.

"The benefit of last year's menu price increase was more than offset by inflation across several items, most notably avocados and dairy, as well as higher usage as we focused on ensuring consistent and generous portions," CFO Adam Rymer said on the earnings call on October 29.

Boatwright's comments come as restaurants and fast food chains, including Sweetgreen and White Castle, increasingly use robots to handle human tasks. Amid the robotization of the industry, though, some leaders have expressed hesitation about rolling out the red carpet for robots.

When asked by Yahoo Finance about whether he wants to increase automation in Shake Shack, the chain's CEO Danny Meyer said: "Personally, I don't."

"I think when it comes to making the product, there's something about the human touch, smashing that burger, seasoning the burger, flipping the burger, knowing exactly when it is time to come off, where not any two burgers at Shake Shack taste exactly the same," Meyer added in an "Opening Bid" episode on December 4.

Chipotle's shares were trading at $64.60 on Monday. Its stock is up about 41% from the start of the year.

Chipotle representatives didn't respond to a request for comment from BI.

I ranked 13 fast-food double cheeseburgers from worst to best, and my favorite was also one of the cheapest

double cheeseburgers from McDonald's, White Castle, and In-N-Out
I tried double cheeseburgers from 13 fast-food chains to determine which was best.

  • We ranked double cheeseburgers from 13 fast-food chains to see which one reigns supreme.
  • 7th Street Burger, the smallest chain, blew me away with its saucy smash burger.
  • I thought In-N-Out's famous Double-Double was great value and undeniably delicious.

Practically every fast-food chain sells a double cheeseburger, but which one is the best?

Burgers remain one of the most popular foods in the US throughout the rest of the year. A 2023 report by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation found that 79% of Americans order burgers at restaurants at least once a month. And, while chicken tenders may be the hottest fast-food menu item of the coming year, burger chains like McDonald's and Burger King still trump most chicken chains.

Over the years, I've tried practically every fast-food double cheeseburger on the market. For a definitive ranking, I tried double cheeseburgers from McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Shake Shack, White Castle, Whataburger, P. Terry's, Five Guys, Cook Out, Checkers, Sonic, 7th Street Burger, and In-N-Out.

Here's every fast-food double cheeseburger ranked from worst to best.

My least favorite double cheeseburger was from Burger King. It cost me $3.89.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger was under $5, but I'm not sure it was worth the price.

It comes with two of the chain's beef patties, American cheese, pickles, mustard, and ketchup on a sesame-seed bun.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It comes with one slice of cheese.

This burger was super filling, but I liked the other burgers I tried more.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Right away, I tasted the thick beef patties. The burger had traveled a little more than 15 minutes from my local Burger King to my apartment, but the meat was still juicy and the cheese nicely melted.

The pickle slices were thick and crunchy, and I enjoyed the sesame-seed bun, which added a nice textural element. But I thought there was just a little too much ketchup, which will likely vary depending on who's making your burger that day.

It was also a little heavy for my liking. It filled me up a little more than I had anticipated before jumping into the rest of the burger comparison. Still, for a burger that costs just under $4, that might be more of an asset than a hindrance if you want a filling, inexpensive lunch.

Next was Wendy's double cheeseburger, which the chain calls a Double Stack. I ordered it for $4.49.
wendys meal
Wendy's double cheeseburger.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was about the same price as the burgers from McDonald's and Burger King, though it landed squarely in the middle in terms of value.

A Wendy's double cheeseburger comes with two junior-size hamburger patties, American cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickles, and sweet onion.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The toppings looked a little stingy, and they were clustered in the middle of the sandwich. I would have liked to see them more spread out.

The burger bun was fluffy and light, and the toppings had a ton of flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

But I had to get a few bites in to reach the toppings in the center.

The toppings themselves were amazing. I thought the pickles were the most flavorful out of the burgers I tried, and I liked the use of an onion ring rather than diced onion, although I would've liked more.

The McDonald's double cheeseburger cost me $5.79.
The author holds a mcdonalds double cheeseburger

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was slightly more expensive than Wendy's version but had more toppings. It came with an extra slice of American cheese plus chopped onions, and I thought it was still relatively affordable.

The double cheeseburger from McDonald's comes with two beef patties, pickles, chopped onions, ketchup, mustard, and two slices of American cheese.

I was interested to see if the added toppings would amp up the flavor.

I thought the ingredients came together well in this burger, but the bun was a little lackluster.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The bun held everything together and was a good size, but it was a little too soft and didn't have a lot of flavor on its own. But I enjoyed the amount of condiments and didn't find them overpowering.

The chopped onions added a lot of flavor, and the burger patties were juicy despite being thinner than the Burger King ones. I liked the added cheese but didn't think it was necessary.

Next up was the double-meat Whataburger with cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It costs $9 at a Whataburger in Austin, excluding tax and fees.

I ordered it with a large bun, American cheese, grilled peppers and onions, pickles, and ketchup.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger was a decent size and I could see the gooey cheese peeking out from underneath the soft potato bun.

Unlike the other double cheeseburgers, this burger had sliced jalapeño peppers that I imagined would add quite the kick.

The ingredients definitely set this burger apart from the others.

I thought the burgers had a delightfully crispy texture to them, and the toppings added a ton of flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The bun was light and fluffy, but I did think the burger patties could have been a little thicker and juicier.

Coming in ninth was the double cheeseburger from P. Terry's Burger Stand, a regional chain I visited in Austin.
p terrys double cheeseburger

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger cost only $5, making it one of the cheaper burgers I tried.

Despite being less expensive than the Whataburger double cheeseburger, the P. Terry's burger was larger.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered it with pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, and American cheese.

I again thought the cheese could have been more melted, but the size definitely made up for that small detail.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

One of the benefits of ordering from P. Terry's is that you can easily customize your burger and add a number of toppings including grilled onions, the chain's special sauce, tomato, lettuce, and more.

I thought the burgers were juicy and the pickles had a tart crunch to them.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The bun was slightly underwhelming, but I thought it was an excellent, large burger with tons of flavor, especially for the low price. I also thought the mustard really came through and added a lot to the burger.

The double cheeseburger from Shake Shack was the second most expensive burger I tried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I paid $12.49 for a double cheeseburger. I could customize my toppings, but I went with pickles, onions, and Shack sauce.

Right away, I thought the burger was massive.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger patties were perfectly crispy on the outside and covered in gooey melted cheese. The pickles also looked large and homemade. It was even heavy to pick up.

The toppings were generous and the chain's signature Shack sauce, which is a mayo-based sauce with a slight mustard flavor, made it really tasty.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The cheese was thick and perfectly melted.

However, biting into the Shake Shack burger was a little overwhelming, in my opinion.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger was huge, which was both an asset and a hindrance. I struggled to get through more than a few bites.

However, despite being the second most expensive burger, I thought it was worth the price. The burger patties were much thicker than the other burgers I tried, and the toppings took it over the edge in terms of flavor.

Overall, I was impressed ... but stuffed.

In seventh place was the double-decker burger with cheese from Checkers.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger has since been replaced with the Big Buford, which has all the same ingredients but a bakery-style bun instead of a sesame-seed bun. The burger costs $7.69 at my local Checkers in Brooklyn.

I thought this burger was a little pricey for the size.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was smaller than my hand, though it did include a variety of toppings like tomato, lettuce, and red onion. The burger also comes with American cheese, dill pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise on a toasted bun.

The burger patties were very juicy and the toppings tasted fresh.

I also thought the American cheese was very tangy and flavorful. Overall, I enjoyed the combination of flavors. However, the price prevented this burger from ranking higher.

I also tried the double cheese slider from White Castle.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

White Castle sliders tend to be eaten in pairs, so I ordered two. Each burger cost me $3.55, so I ended up paying $7.10.

The burgers were small but packed with flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burgers smelled strongly of onions and condiments the second I removed them from the bag.

The amount of toppings on each burger was generous.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The pickles were crunchy and flavorful. Though the burgers each had a bun sandwiched in the middle of the burger, it wasn't too bready — instead, it allowed the flavors to really come together while still being filling.

I was blown away by the cheeseburgers from White Castle, a result I admittedly wasn't expecting.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

As the cheapest and smallest burgers, I was expecting them to be a little lackluster. However, I found that good things definitely come in small packages. The onions, condiments, and pickles were flavorful, but it was the beef that really impressed me.

The small-but-mighty burger was one of the most flavorful out of the ones I tried, easy to eat, and perfectly priced.

My fifth-favorite double cheeseburger was from Five Guys.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Five Guys doesn't technically have a "double cheeseburger" — its regular cheeseburgers already come with two slices of cheese and two beef patties.

My burger cost $13.55, excluding taxes and fees, making it the most expensive burger I tried.

I was able to customize my toppings, but I ordered the burger with pickles, grilled onions, ketchup, and mustard.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Right away, I noticed that the toppings were generous. The pickle slices were large, and none of the toppings cost extra to add.

The burger was large without being too intimidating.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I thought it was a perfect size. It required two hands to pick up and eat, but it wasn't as heavy as the burger from Shake Shack. Slices of melted American cheese coated each burger, and there wasn't so much sauce that it dripped out from underneath the sesame-seed buns.

The burger patties were crispy on the outside but juicy on the inside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I thought the pickle slices were thick, crunchy, and tart. I also really enjoyed the choice of a sesame-seed bun — it added a bit of texture to each and every bite.

The grilled onions also really impressed me. They were soft and almost caramelized, adding a lot of flavor that I didn't get from any other burger.

My fourth-favorite double cheeseburger came from Sonic Drive-In.

SuperSonic double cheeseburger.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The SuperSonic double cheeseburger was the only burger I tried that came with lettuce and tomato. Since this was the default option, I decided to try it with these toppings rather than specifically remove them.

The burger cost me $9.75, excluding taxes and fees.

The burger came with a hearty serving of shredded lettuce, tomatoes, two slices of cheese, diced onions, pickles, mayonnaise, and ketchup.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Unlike Sonic's quarter-pound double cheeseburger, which comes with two junior patties, the full-size burger has a combined half-pound of meat.

The bun was perfectly soft but still held the sauce-covered burger together.

The ingredients tasted fresh and vibrant. The tomato wasn't too watery, the lettuce was crisp, and the burgers tasted well-seasoned and juicy. Plus, the burger was a very generous size.

However, despite all these accolades, I thought the price was a little steep compared to what I got from Cook Out and In-N-Out.

My third-favorite double cheeseburger came from Cook Out, a regional chain I visited in South Carolina.

You can order a "big double" from Cook Out any way you wish, but I ordered mine with cheese, ketchup, mustard, onions, and pickles. It cost me $4.99, not including tax.

The burger came wrapped in foil and featured two juicy patties.

It also had thick slices of fresh onion and large pickle spears layered on top of the burger.

For the price, I thought the burger was out of this world.

The cheese slices were thick and tangy, and the burger was perfectly moist and medium-rare. It was also very large, and, after already eating dinner, I struggled to get through more than a few bites, though I kept wanting to go back for more.

At an amazingly low price, this burger definitely earned the second-to-top spot on my ranking.

My second favorite came from 7th Street Burger, a smaller chain based in New York City.

7th Street Burger is a small chain of quick-service burger restaurants with 19 locations in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC.

Since it opened in 2021, the chain has quickly grown a reputation for its no-frills approach to smash burgers, which feature crispy patties, gooey cheese, and the chain's signature sauce.

I ordered a double cheeseburger, which comes with two beef patties, American cheese, onions, pickles, and house sauce on a Martin's potato bun. It cost $9.50, excluding tax and fees.

There wasn't much customization to do for this burger — you can't order it with lettuce or tomato.

However, this burger was perfect exactly as the chain designed it. The burger patties were delightfully crispy on the outside yet managed to stay juicy.

Melted slices of cheese oozed between the two thin, expertly griddled, and charred beef patties, all smothered in the chain's signature sauce, a creamy, tangy take on classic burger sauce.

The burger was served on a pillowy-soft potato roll, which kept things simple.

There were no lettuce or tomato slices to cut through the rich, savory indulgence, but that only added to the burger's savory flavor. I didn't miss the opportunity to customize my burger with additional toppings. It was probably the best smash burger I've ever had.

With pickles and onions to round out the flavor, the double cheeseburger offered a satisfying, nostalgic flavor that elevated the classic smash burger experience.

In my opinion, the best double cheeseburger I tried was the famous Double-Double burger from In-N-Out.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It cost me $4.90, which I thought was an excellent deal for the large burger sitting in front of me. One of the first things I noticed was how thick the burger patties were — they were much thicker than other burgers I tried at a similar price point.

Most Double-Double burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onions, and spread.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

To keep my burger similar to the other burgers I tried, I ordered it with onions, pickles, and spread, which I thought tasted similar to Thousand Island dressing.

The first thing I noticed about the In-N-Out burger was how juicy the burger patties were, followed by the incredible layers of cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The cheese slices were perfectly melted and coated each part of the burger, something I couldn't say about any other burger I tried.

The bun was perfectly soft and held everything together perfectly, while the special spread had my mouth watering for another bite.

Of all the burgers I tried, I thought the In-N-Out double cheeseburger packed the most flavor for the best price.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

When it came to a double cheeseburger, the West-Coast chain really nailed it. The burger was beyond flavorful, the perfect size, and, in my opinion, very good value for money.

The next time I'm in a state with an In-N-Out, I know where I'll be filling my burger craving.

Starbucks' new CEO wants you to get a brewed coffee in 'less than 30 seconds'

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol
"My hope is we can get you a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds," CEO Brian Niccol said.

Starbucks

  • Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol aims for a brewed cup of coffee to take less than 30 seconds to prepare.
  • He told ABC that the coffee chain will be "hitting pause" on increasing prices for this fiscal year.
  • Starbucks plans to enhance mobile orders and transparency around pricing, Niccol said.

Starbucks' new CEO, Brian Niccol, says he hopes customers will one day be able to get a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds.

In an interview with ABC's Good Morning America, the coffee boss said he wants to prioritize speed while also saying that there would be no more price rises for the time being.

Niccol's vision for what Starbucks will look like in five years' time includes a more efficient mobile order business with its own pick-up area.

"You're going to have an experience where when you walk in and you interact with the barista, it's going to be really quick for that brewed cup of coffee," he told ABC. "My hope is we can get you a brewed cup of coffee in less than 30 seconds."

Niccol joined Starbucks as its CEO in September after spending six years at the helm of Chipotle.

Unlike Chipotle, which announced menu price increases of about 2% on Wednesday, Niccol said: "The approach we've taken right now is we're going to hit the pause button on any pricing for this fiscal year."

"I still think there's an opportunity for us to simplify the pricing architecture right now — I don't love the fact that in our app right now, while you're doing this customization, it doesn't inform you what has happened to the price, so I want to get more transparent with the pricing," he said on GMA.

Niccol also said Starbucks would bring back some old staples like the Sharpies used to write names on cups and the coffee condiment bar.

The coffee chain CEO explained that they're investing in technology to provide more accurate times about when drinks will be ready for customers.

"We've got a lot of offerings that there's just one or two of these ordered a day," he said.

"The way I talk about it is, we're going to do fewer things, but we're going to do fewer things better."

I compared double cheeseburgers from famous East and West Coast chains. The cheaper one had a slight edge.

in n out double double and 7th street burger double smashed burger
I compared two famous burgers from the East and West Coast, and the cheaper burger won.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • I compared two famous burgers from the East and West Coast.
  • In-N-Out's animal-style Double Double burger was large and came with lots of toppings.
  • The gooey cheese and soft bun of the double cheeseburger from 7th Street Burger in NYC blew me away.

There's a lot of debate over which coast has the best, well, everything.

From pizza to Mexican food and, of course, burgers, foodies on both sides of the country will always claim their coast does it best.

To see how famous burger chains from each coast compared, I tried cheeseburgers from one West Coast-based and one East Coast-based chain: In-N-Out's iconic Double Double animal-style cheeseburger and 7th Street Burger's smashed double cheeseburger.

Founded in New York City in 2021, 7th Street Burger now has 19 locations in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, DC, and has grown a reputation for its no-frills approach to smash burgers featuring crispy patties, gooey cheese, and the chain's signature sauce. Infatuation called it one of the best burgers in the city and "an unapologetic salute to salt and fat."

In-N-Out, on the other hand, is an institution on the West Coast thanks to its simple menu dating back to its founding in 1948 and the popularity and arguable cult following associated with its "animal-style" burgers. It's now in eight states, and in 2023, it opened its 400th restaurant.

The chain's president, Lynsi Snyder, has said the In-N-Out has no plans to expand to the East Coast, much to the dismay of fans outside the west and southwest regions of the US.

Here's how these two famous burgers compared in terms of taste and value.

In-N-Out is commonly thought of as a Californian chain, but I visited an In-N-Out restaurant in Austin.

The In-N-Out location was painted a bright white to accent the chain's signature red branding.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

When I arrived in Austin, In-N-Out Burger was one of the first places on my must-visit list. Luckily, the nearest location was just a short drive from my hotel in South Austin.

When I arrived at the restaurant, I spotted the iconic yellow-and-red logo on the crisp white building. As someone from the East Coast, this would be my first time experiencing In-N-Out and I couldn't wait to try it.

I ordered a Double-Double burger "animal style" and an order of fries.
in n out burger meal
The burger came wrapped in paper.

Erin McDowell/Insider

In-N-Out's most iconic menu item is arguably its Double Double burger, so I knew I had to try it.

Although I've heard mixed reviews on the chain's plain fries, since I ordered the burger animal style, I decided to order them on their own rather than "animal style" or with cheese.

The burger came partially wrapped in paper, which made it easy to hold and bite into.
in n out double double animal style burger
The burger came with two patties, lettuce, tomato, and gooey cheese, plus sauce with onions.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Double-Double includes two patties, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, and spread, but ordering it animal-style adds mustard-cooked patties, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions.

When I visited in 2021, the entire meal came to $11.80, including tax, which I thought was a fair price considering how much food I received. The price of a Double Double has since risen from $4.50 to an average price of $5.29 at some locations, ABC News reported in June.

The cheese and sauce practically oozed out of the burger. I wasn't complaining.

The burger was large and loaded with flavorful toppings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

After biting into the massive burger, tangy mustard, pickles, and onions hit my tongue.

The pickles were tart and crunchy, the beef patties were over-the-top juicy and flavorful, and the cheese-to-meat ratio was spot-on.

The onions added a lot of flavor and the spread stood out with its rich, savory taste. It reminded me more of Thousand-Island dressing rather than a typical burger special sauce.

The toppings tasted fresh and added a lot of flavor to the burger.

I liked the toppings, sauce, and cheese on this burger.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger patties themselves were on the thinner side, and I thought they were just OK. To me, the real standouts of this burger were the layers of melted cheese, the tangy sauce, and the lettuce, tomato, and pickles.

If I were grasping to find other criticisms, I also wasn't blown away by the bun. It was soft yet didn't have much flavor on its own, and it was slightly dry and crumbly.

However, this was a truly exceptional burger, and once earned the top spot on my ranking of every fast-food double cheeseburger.

I was eager to see how the New York-based chain would stack up against this West Coast icon.

I was interested to see if 7th Street Burger in New York City could top In-N-Out as my favorite fast-food burger.

I visited the 7th Street Burger location on the Lower East Side in Manhattan.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

When I arrived at the Lower East Side location in Manhattan on a rainy weekday, there were hardly any people inside the small standing-room-only restaurant.

However, on the weekend at its flagship East 7th Street location, you can typically expect to wait in line to try one of its famous smash burgers.

I ordered a double cheeseburger with fries and a side of the chain's signature sauce for dipping.
7th street burger double cheeseburger
The cheeseburger was deliciously greasy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

When I unwrapped my burger, the first thing I noticed was how greasy it was. The paper was practically dripping.

However, the burger patties appeared perfectly crispy, and I could see layers of gooey cheese emerging from the burger.

The cheeseburger also smelled heavenly — I imagined it would be the perfect antidote to the many nearly identical salads I typically eat during the workweek.

The burger came smothered in sauce, cheese, and chopped grilled onions.
7th street burger double cheeseburger
The burger had a hearty serving of house sauce on it.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The double cheeseburger comes with two fresh beef burger patties, American cheese, onions, pickles, and house sauce on a Martin's potato bun.

My burger cost $9.50, a side of fries set me back $4.50, and I paid an additional $1 for a side of the house sauce. This was almost double the price of the In-N-Out burger, so the West Coast chain immediately won in terms of value.

No matter how good a fast-food burger is, I struggle to find a reason to pay nearly $10 for one.

Potential reasons for In-N-Out's low prices include its limited menus, a focus on in-house production, and a strategic real-estate plan that places restaurants close to one another and to highways for more efficient deliveries.

In-N-Out also has many more locations than 7th Street Burger, with around 400 total locations compared to just 19, and is a bigger, more profitable company, which could make it easier to keep prices lower for the consumer.

Business Insider reached out to 7th Street Burger for comment on its prices but did not immediately hear back.

The burger patties were decadently crispy but still retained their juiciness.
7th street burger double cheeseburger
The burger came on a Martin's potato roll.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Slices of gooey cheese were nestled between the two thin, perfectly griddled, and charred beef patties and a generous serving of the chain's house sauce, which resembled a tangy, creamy burger sauce.

Held together by a squishy, soft potato roll, this burger was definitely no-frills. There wasn't any lettuce or tomato to cut through the intensely savory fat bomb I was eating, but I didn't mind.

Topped with pickles and onions, this burger delivered a balanced, classic flavor profile that elevated what a standard smash burger can be.

I was truly torn over which burger I preferred.
7th street burger double cheeseburger
I liked the patties and bun better on the 7th Street Burger cheeseburger.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The pros for the 7th Street Burger double cheeseburger were the sauce, crispy patties, and the bun.

However, In-N-Out impressed me with its fresh toppings, equally gooey cheese, the sheer size of the burger, and the comparatively low price.

The burgers were also so different in their design. 7th Street Burger does smash burgers, and does them well. Both burgers were incredible in their own right but, if I had to choose just one, I think I'd betray my East-Coast roots and opt for the burger from out west.

In my opinion, In-N-Out's Double Double animal-style simply can't be topped in terms of flavor, size, and value.

However, before I get out to the West Coast again, 7th Street Burger is a perfectly adequate alternative for an out-of-this-world fast-food burger.

I tried apple pies from 6 fast-food chains and ranked them from worst to best

Three apple pies.
I tried many fast-food apple pies, but Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada ultimately won the top spot.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

  • I tried apple pies from Arby's, KFC, McDonald's, Panda Express, Popeyes, and Taco Bell.
  • I loved Arby's apple-infused croissant-textured pie.
  • However, my favorite was the $3.65 caramel apple empanada from Taco Bell.

Year-round, I opt for savory pies. But come fall, I ditch my go-to chicken potpies for the season's staple: apple pie.

When it comes to pies, everyone has their own traditions and favorite flavors, but apples have endured as one of the more popular choices.

Earlier this year, Holiday Calendar, a platform dedicated to holiday lists, analyzed the grocery habits of 12 million Americans and surveyed 4,500 people across 15 states to determine their favorite pie. It found that apple pie consistently ranked in the top five most popular pies across the country. Additionally, in 2022, Instacart revealed that apple pie accounted for over 27% of its pie sales between February 2021 and January 2022, declaring it a clear favorite among the American crowd.

While there's no substitute for the fresh-out-of-the-oven homemade version, on-the-go options served at fast-food chains make for good alternatives.

To find which fast-food chain serves the best apple pie, I tried pies from Arby's, KFC, McDonald's, Panda Express, Popeyes, and Taco Bell and ranked them from my least favorite to my favorite based on flavor, texture, and value.

Here's how every fast-food apple pie ranked.

My least favorite were the Apple Pie Poppers, which were added to KFC menus earlier this year.
Apple Popper Pies from KFC.
Apple Pie Poppers from KFC are last on my list of apple pies.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

A serving of four bite-sized apple pies cost $2.91, excluding tax and fees, at my local KFC in Manhattan, New York. When I tried these in August, the pies also came in a 10-count serving.

The apple pie poppers were only added to KFC's menu in April, so I was excited to try them. KFC's menu no longer lists the apple pies, but it did add a cherry pie version in October. The brand did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Each pastry was about 2 inches long and had slits on one side.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

I placed an online order through DoorDash and received my pastries within 14 minutes. Despite the quick delivery, when I opened the packet, the pastries were barely lukewarm and already slightly soggy.

When I tasted them, I thought the ratio of fruit to dough was off, with each popper only holding about two tiny cubes of apple.

Three bites into the tiny pocket pie, I still hadn't gotten the gooey apple taste I love. Instead, I felt like I was eating fried flour.

I thought the four mini pies, which were 340 calories, would be great for groups to share.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

While these weren't my favorite apple-pie dessert, I could see how they could be a good snack option because of their size. Given that they came in packs of four or 10, I thought groups might enjoy ordering them.

My fifth favorite was the Apple Pie Roll from Panda Express.

The pie roll cost $2, excluding tax and fees, at a Panda Express I visited in Chicago.

At first glance, it looked like a cross between a pie and a Chinese egg roll.

The chain's first-ever dessert option, introduced in 2023, was created to combine the flavors and textures of an American apple pie and a Chinese egg roll.

It's made using a wonton wrapper and apple filling, topped with cinnamon sugar.

It came hot and crispy straight out of the fryer and had a warm cinnamon smell.

I was impressed with the freshness of this roll and liked that it is always served hot. Before I even took a bite, I could tell the pastry had a nice crunchy exterior.

However, the overpowering cinnamon and sugar coating made this pie roll too sweet for my taste.

A dessert doesn't need to be doused in sugar, but this one was, putting it fifth in my ranking.

However, I loved the crunch of the pastry, and the serving had the fewest calories of all the pies I tried — 150 calories — so it may be a good sweet option for some diners looking for lower-calorie options.

My fourth favorite was Popeyes' Cinnamon Apple Pie.

The cinnamon-coated dessert cost $1.89, without taxes and fees, at the Popeyes I visited in Chicago.

The pie was not as hot as I would've liked, but it had a nice crispy exterior.

Unlike the pies from KFC, this 240-calorie pie has no slits or holes on either side. It comes wrapped with a few fork-like impressions on its corners to prevent the filling from escaping.

I thought this pie had an overpowering cinnamon flavor.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

I think spices like cinnamon are less for taste and more for their fragrance — if you add just the right amount, it can be a game changer, but overdo it, as in the case of this Popeyes pie, and it can really throw the whole recipe off-balance.

But I enjoyed its slightly zesty apple filling.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The one thing Popeyes got right was the flavor of its filling, which had just the right hint of lemon and some apple chunks. I'm obsessed with mixing tangy and sweet flavor profiles, and I think it helped this pie stand out from the rest.

My third favorite was Arby's Apple Turnover.
The Apple Turnover from Arby's.
The Apple Turnover from Arby's was part of my top three.

It cost $2.40 at the Arby's I visited in Chicago, excluding tax and fees.

At first glance, I thought the frosting drizzle on top seemed unnecessary.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The turnover came in a regular, white-colored pastry packet with no branding. The basic packaging and the sugary drizzle didn't appeal to me at first, but when I did take a bite, I was pleasantly surprised.

I loved its flaky croissant-like texture and the jam-like apple filling inside.
The Apple Turnover from Arby's.
The Apple Turnover from Arby's was well-balanced.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

The inside had the perfect layer of apple filling, which was molten but still a bit thick. It was encased in crisp pastry.

Despite having only one layer of apple filling, this 430-calorie pie did not taste doughy and was well-balanced.

However, it did not have that overall pie feeling. I felt as though I was eating a stuffed croissant.
The Apple Turnover from Arby's.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

Most importantly, the apple chunks were missing. The jam-like texture in the filling meant there was a hint of artificialness, which took away from the spirit of the season and the pie for me.

My second favorite was the Baked Apple Pie from McDonald's.
An apple pie from McDonald's.
The apple pie from McDonald's came really close to being the best.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

At $1.89 — excluding tax and fees— this apple pie from a Chicago McDonald's was priced similarly to the one at Popeyes.

The pie came in a signature yellow box and was served warm.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

First launched in 1968, the brand's apple pie was fried in its early days. Over the years, though, it has undergone several transformations. The most significant of these was the switch from frying to baking in 1992. It's now 243 calories.

I loved that it had a pie-like texture with a lattice on top.

Although the shape of the pie was pretty standard, I was happy to see McDonald's added patterns to the pastry.

It had the perfect tartness, a nice crunch, and big, chunky apple pieces spread evenly throughout.

This pie had the right ratio of apples to dough, and I enjoyed the warm and soft interior and its crispy biscuit-like exterior.

My favorite was Taco Bell's limited-time caramel apple empanada.

My favorite pie from Taco Bell was also the most expensive.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

At $3.65 — excluding tax and fees— this apple pie from my local Taco Bell in New York, which I ordered via DoorDash, was the most expensive on the list.

The empanada is part of Taco Bell's new limited-time menu, which features fan-favorite items from the past.

Last month, Taco Bell unveiled a new "Decades" menu featuring old favorites. The menu included popular items that had been previously discontinued from each decade since the brand launched.

Four items have been available since Halloween, but the brand recently added its 2004 hit, the caramel apple empanada.

The empanada was first introduced as part of the brand's Big Bell Value Menu but was discontinued in 2019 until now.

I loved that I could taste the filling right from my first bite.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

As soon as I held the pastry's paper sleeve, I noticed how warm it felt. It had remained hot even though I was trying it about 15 minutes after I received it on a cold day.

As I took my first bite, I could immediately taste the warm and velvety filling alongside the crispy pastry. Its freshness stood out, and unlike the other pies I'd tried, this one got to the star of the dish — the filling — right from the start.

Even the apples had a nice tart and juicy crunch to them and paired nicely with the caramel.

All the elements of a pie perfectly align in this one: a warm and creamy filling paired with the crunchiest pastry.
Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

As far as fast-food pies go, this was by far the best I'd tried.

The filling struck a perfect balance and was not overly sweet, and it paired beautifully with the crispy, lightly salted dough. I had every intention of sharing a few bites with a friend but ended up eating the entire pastry myself.

It also felt slightly larger and more satisfying than the other pies on this list, which perhaps explains why it's also the priciest option.

Overall, each pie I tried had a unique flavor profile and varied textures, ranging from crispy and toasted to soft and molten.

But Taco Bell's caramel apple empanada stood out for its well-balanced flavors: a warm, crispy pie with juicy whole chunks of apple complemented by creamy caramel, setting the perfect tone for the cozy days ahead.

Get ready to pay more at Chipotle

Chipotle.
Despite raising menu prices, Chipotle reported a strong 3rd quarter, contrary to other fast food chains.

jetcityimage/iStock

  • Chipotle is considering raising prices due to the rising cost of avocados, queso, and sour cream.
  • New CFO Adam Rymer aims to keep menu items affordable despite cost pressures, the Wall Street Journal reported.
  • Chipotle's sales rose 6% last quarter, showing resilience amid fast food price hikes.

Chipotle's new chief finance officer is eager to keep menu items affordable for cash-strapped customers, but has warned that prices could rise as the cost of raw materials keeps going up.

Executives at the Mexican grill chain are contemplating raising prices further as costs have risen for avocados, queso, and sour cream, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Chipotle has not yet decided when any price increase might kick in, or how significant the rise would be, the Journal reported.

Adam Rymer started as finance chief at Chipotle in October. In his 15 years at the company, he has held various roles, including vice president of finance and compensation analyst.

Rymer was initially due to become CFO in January but instead took the position three months early after previous Chipotle boss Brian Niccol exited in August to become CEO of Starbucks. Niccol was replaced in the interim by Scott Boatwright, who served as chief operating officer beforehand.

Despite the potential for higher menu prices, Chipotle remains a better value option for customers than similar alternatives, Rymer said, per the Journal.

Inflation has not been kind to fast food prices.

Starbucks, McDonald's, KFC, In-N-Out, and Olive Garden are among the chains that have increased prices due to the soaring cost of labor and commodities.

Unlike some fast food firms, whose sales have taken a tumble as customers have cut back, Chipotle has shown resilience.

In its most recent quarter, the company's same-store sales rose 6% compared to the same period last year. Revenue grew 13% to $2.8 billion year over year.

Chipotle did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside regular working hours.

I tried McDonald's $5 meal deal and understand why it's the cornerstone of the chain's new value menu

McDonald's franchisees are upset by new royalty hike
McDonald's is seeing success with the addition of a new $5 value meal.

Nancy Luna/Business Insider

  • McDonald's is introducing a new permanent value menu, anchored by its new McValue meal.
  • Originally, the $5 deal was only supposed to be available for a month, beginning in June.
  • After trying the deal myself, I understand why it's been a success for the chain.

Fast-food chains across the country are pulling out all the stops to retain customers as food prices increase. Many chains, including McDonald's, have implemented value meals that cost around $5.

Originally, the McDonald's meal was only supposed to stick around for a month, from the end of June through July. However, the chain first extended the deal through August and then announced in September that it would be around through the end of the year.

Then, in November, the chain announced the value meal would be the centerpiece of a new menu, dubbed the McValue menu, launching in Q1 next year.

I recently tried the $5 Meal Deal and understand why the chain is keeping it around. Here's what I got in the meal and what I thought of each component.

For $5 — give or take a few cents after tax — I was able to get a small Diet Coke, four Chicken McNuggets, a McDouble, and small fries.
the mcdouble meal from mcdonald's
My $5 Meal Deal from McDonald's.

Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider

If I ordered these items separately at my local McDonald's in New York, it would cost $3.39 for the McDouble, $2.59 for the McNuggets, $2.79 for the fries, and $1.49 for the Diet Coke, which would come out to $10.26 before tax.

The McDouble wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was certainly passable.
mcdouble burger from McDonald's
My McDouble left something to be desired.

Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider

A McDouble is a hamburger with two patties. It comes with cheese, ketchup, pickles, and onions. The McDonald's website says it should also include mustard, but I didn't taste any or see any.

My biggest issue with the burger was that I thought it was bone-dry. After taking a few bites, I needed to chug my soda.

But even though I didn't love my McDouble, I'm not writing the meal off. I could always get a McChicken as part of the deal instead or try a different location's McDouble burger.

I'm a big McNugget fan, so I was happy to have some in my meal.

McNuggets are my favorite item at McDonald's.

Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider

The $5 Meal Deal comes with four Chicken McNuggets.

My typical McDonald's order is a medium 10-piece McNugget meal, so I was happy to snack on a few. Even though these ended up not being my favorite nuggets when I compared $5 meal deals from McDonald's, Wendy's, and Burger King — Wendy's has the best nuggets in my opinion — McNuggets are a safe bet.

They have a good texture, the breaded coating isn't too salty or thick, and the nuggets aren't dense at all. These are classic for a reason.

McDonald's fries cannot be beat.
the fries from wendy's, mcdonald's, and burger king
McDonald's has the best fries of any fast-food chain.

Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider

As this photo shows, McDonald's fries were the thinnest of the three chains I tried.

They were also the saltiest, which is the key to tasty french fries, and had the best texture. I thought Wendy's and Burger King's fries were too dense and almost soggy, while McDonald's fries were the perfect amount of crispy.

My McDonald's drink was a good size, especially when compared to other chains' meal deals.

The soda from Burger King was visibly smaller.

Gabbi Shaw/Business Insider

As you can see, the McDonald's and Wendy's sodas — 21 ounces and 20 ounces, respectively — are significantly larger than the 16-ounce drink offered by Burger King, and all three meals are the same price.

I can see why the $5 Meal Deal is driving customers to the Golden Arches.
people standing outside of a mcdonald's location in london
The foot traffic at McDonald's has increased since the value meal was introduced.

Mike Kemp/In Pictures/Getty Images

In a July memo, McDonald's executives wrote that the meal is "meeting the objective of driving guests back to our restaurants."

As Business Insider reported using Placer.ai data, which keeps track of foot traffic at restaurants, there were 8% more visitors to McDonald's on the day the meal deal was introduced back in June — and it was the busiest Tuesday of the year to that point.

That record was broken the following week.

After getting a good amount of food at a considerably lower price, I can see why people love the deal. I correctly predicted back in July that the Meal Deal would be extended and eventually be permanently added to the menu — and in 2025, I'll be proven right.

Taco Bell brought back 5 discontinued items from the last 60 years. We ranked them from worst to best.

Taco Bell Tostada

  • Taco Bell is reviving five menu items from past decades for a limited time.
  • The nostalgic menu includes items like the Tostada, Meximelt, and Gordita Supreme.
  • We tried the new Decades menu, and the Caramel Apple Empanada was our clear favorite.

Taco Bell is the latest fast-food brand to bank on nostalgia, with a new limited-time menu featuring fan-favorite items from the past.

When the first Taco Bell restaurant opened in Downey, California, in 1962, it offered five items: frijoles, tostadas, burritos, tacos, and a chili burger. The menu has undergone multiple changes since, often removing and re-releasing fan favorites like the Mexican Pizza.

Now, Taco Bell hopes to evoke a sense of nostalgia in customers with its new "Decades" menu, which features five previously discontinued items.

The menu includes the Tostada from the original 1960s menu, the Green Sauce Burrito from the '70s, the Meximelt from the '80s, the '90s-era Gordita Supreme, and the Caramel Apple Empanada of the 2000s.

This isn't the first time a fast-food chain has leaned into nostalgia to win over customers.

Wendy's launched a collaboration with Paramount, which owns Nickelodeon, and "SpongeBob SquarePants," to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary with a limited-edition burger inspired by the Krabby Patty and a pineapple-flavored milkshake.

It came on the heels of McDonald's launching limited-edition cups inspired by iconic Happy Meal toys and its viral Grimace-themed shake, which paid homage to the character first introduced in the 1970s.

Additionally, in 2021, Burger King rebranded for the first time in 20 years, returning to a design reminiscent of its '70s and '80s branding.

Nostalgia can pay off. In July 2023, McDonald's reported the Grimace shake helped boost sales by more than 10% during the quarter the campaign launched, while Fast Company reported that in the days after Burger King's rebrand, customer visits increased by 39%.

We tried all five items on Taco Bell's new Decades menu and ranked them from our least favorite to our favorite.

5. Tostada
Taco Bell Tostada
Taco Bell's tostada features refried beans, lettuce, and shredded cheese on a corn tostada shell.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Original release: The tostada, with its refried beans, tangy red sauce, lettuce, and shredded cheese layered over a crunchy corn tostada shell, was part of Taco Bell's original 1962 menu, but it was discontinued in 2020.

Price: $2.19

Note: All prices listed here may vary in different markets.

The soft refried beans and tangy sauce perfectly complemented the crispy corn shell.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

Anneta: The corn shell was satisfyingly crispy, and the refried beans on top were well-distributed across the tostada. They also packed a punch of delicious flavor thanks to the red sauce.

But I found the lettuce to be limp and distracting, especially since it covered the rest of the ingredients. Customizing the tostada with some pico de gallo would help, but otherwise, I'd probably skip this.

Priyanka: I usually prefer crispy-shell tacos over soft ones, so I enjoyed biting into this crunchy tostada. It felt like I was eating one giant, perfectly layered nacho, minus the melted cheese and sour cream. And while initially this looked more like a side dish than a main dish because of its size, I realized how filling it was after a couple of bites.

However, I thought the tostada was a bit bland and would've benefited from another layer of hot sauce or some pico de gallo.

4. Gordita Supreme
Taco Bell Gordita Supreme
Taco Bell's Gordita Supreme was originally released in the '90s.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Original release: The Gordita Supreme, which appeared on Taco Bell's menu in the '90s, features a flatbread shell filled with seasoned beef, sour cream, lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a three-cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack.

Price: $2.99

The fluffy flatbread was the star of the Gordita Supreme.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Anneta: The flatbread was the best part of my Gordita Supreme. It was warm, soft, and delightfully pillowy. But with no additional sauce and your standard rotation of veggies — lettuce and tomato — there just wasn't much flavor to it. I doused my Gordita Supreme with some avocado verde salsa, which helped a little.

I think this really needs some pico de gallo and purple cabbage, two new ingredients for Taco Bell that helped elevate its fantastic Cantina Chicken Menu.

Priyanka: Since I don't eat red meat, I swapped the beef for chicken, which I thought complemented the other ingredients well.

The light layer of sour cream gave the folded wrap a nice pop of freshness alongside the lettuce and diced tomatoes, and the chicken was well-seasoned. However, this dish would be better if the flatbread were lightly grilled or toasted.

3. The green sauce burrito
Taco Bell's Green Sauce Burrito

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Original release: The green sauce burrito, which debuted in 1970, was among the chain's most loved and replicated items until it was discontinued. The burrito contains refried beans, onions, cheddar cheese, and a spicy green sauce made from green chili, tomatillos, jalapeños, and spices.

Price: $2.49

The simplicity of the ingredients used in this burrito allowed the green sauce's flavors to shine.

Priyanka Rajput/Business Insider

Anneta: I don't usually go for a bean burrito at Taco Bell (I'm all about the Grilled Cheese Burrito and, more recently, the Cantina Chicken Burrito), but the Green Burrito took me by surprise. The green sauce brings so much flavor and elevates the entire burrito, adding subtle heat and pairing perfectly with the delicious refried beans.

My only wish is that my burrito had more crunchy onions for a little extra texture. But I couldn't resist finishing the entire dish, even though it was the last item I tried on the Decades menu.

Priyanka: It took a few bites before I reached the oozing refried beans and crunchy onions, but once I did, the burrito was flavorful. Even though it was made using simple ingredients, it came together well, and I liked that it didn't contain rice.

To elevate it slightly, I'd add some pico de gallo and request that my tortilla be extra toasty next time, but it was a solid dish.

2. Meximelt
Taco Bell's Meximelt

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Original release: The Meximelt was on Taco Bell's menu for 30 years before it was discontinued in 2019. The dish, which first appeared in the '80s, features a tortilla full of seasoned beef, pico de gallo, and a three-cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack.

Price: $2.99

The Meximelt tasted super fresh and was packed with so much flavor.
Taco Bell's Decades menu
The Taco Bell Decades menu is available for a limited time nationwide.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Anneta: The ingredient list in the Meximelt is simple and short, but each one is performing at its peak. The pico de gallo added a burst of freshness to every bite, and the three-cheese blend was perfectly melted, wrapping up the beef in a deliciously cheesy hug.

I usually douse my Taco Bell order in hot sauce, but there was so much juice and flavor in the beef of the Meximelt that I completely forgot to add it. Even my boyfriend, who isn't a huge Taco Bell fan, was impressed.

Priyanka: Similar to the Gordita Supreme, I swapped the beef in the Meximelt for a layer of chicken, and I'm glad I did!

At first glance, I thought it looked a lot like the Gordita Supreme and would probably taste the same. But with the first bite, I was proven wrong. The tortilla was a bit thinner than the Gordita's flatbread, which I preferred since it allowed the flavors of the other ingredients to shine through.

1. Caramel Apple Empanada

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Original release: The caramel apple empanada was first introduced in 2004 as part of Taco Bell's Big Bell Value Menu but was discontinued in 2019. The sweet treat consists of apple pieces and a creamy caramel filling encased in a crispy pastry.

Price: $3.65

The Caramel Apple Empanada was our clear favorite from the Decades menu.

Anneta Konstantinides/Business Insider

Anneta: I was a huge fan of Taco Bell's Cheesy Chicken Crispanada, released for a limited time earlier this year, so I had high hopes for the Caramel Apple Empanada — and it delivered.

My empanada came out piping hot. As I took my first bite, the crispy shell immediately gave way to the warm and lovely filling. The shell had a great crunch and a super satisfying flakiness. The empanada also had plenty of juicy apple chunks, which paired well with the subtle hints of caramel.

This is a great sweet treat, especially for the chilly winter season. My only complaint is that it isn't a permanent menu item!

Priyanka: A bite of this crunchy, creamy empanada instantly put me in the holiday spirit. I've tried apple pies from various fast-food chains, but this one stands out for its perfectly crisp golden pastry and well-balanced apple caramel filling. I ate my dessert about 15 minutes after I'd received it, but when I took it out of its paper sleeve, I could still feel the warmth, which was very impressive given the cold weather outside.

I also loved not having to work through layers of crispy dough to get to the heart of the dish: the filling. The two were perfectly balanced right from the first bite. The tart apples and salted caramel paired beautifully without being overly sweet. If there's one item on this menu you shouldn't miss, it's the dessert!

When Business Insider contacted Taco Bell about the menu and our thoughts on it, the brand said it "is proud to have been able to provide fans with new and authentic innovations for decades."

It added, "As our fans continue to call for the legendary mouth-watering favorites that they miss, or that they have only heard about and never got the chance to experience, the Decades Menu is reintroducing the classics from the first five decades to connect generations of Taco Bell fans with nostalgic flavors that have withstood the test of time."

McDonald's is bringing back cheap fast food with its McValue menu

McDonald's wants to win back cash-strapped diners.

Erin McDowell/Insider

  • McDonald's is launching a new value menu to attract budget-conscious customers in the US.
  • The chain has raised prices in recent years in response to inflation, putting off some customers.
  • It's now refocusing on value.

McDonald's is preparing to launch its new value menu in the US to win back cash-strapped shoppers.

The chain has touted this new menu in recent earnings calls, saying it plans to roll it out in Q1 next year.

Per Bloomberg, the new platform will be dubbed McValue and includes its $5 meal deal launched in June — a bundle including a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, four Chicken McNuggets, a small order of fries, and a small soft drink.

It will also include a new offer where customers can buy one item and get another for $1, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

McDonald's did not immediately respond to BI's request for comment.

The fast-food chain has struggled in recent months as it raised prices in response to inflation, which put off some customers and hurt sales.

Global same-store sales were down 1.5% in its third quarter, following a 1% slide in the previous quarter.

Same-store sales in the US were virtually flat, up 0.3% from the same period in 2023, while sales in international markets dropped 2.1%.

The company has been sounding the alarm on the struggles of lower-income consumers for some time and said that value will be key to winning these diners back.

It has also had to recover from backlash from an E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions served on its Quarter Pounders hamburgers. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 100 people across 14 states were infected; 34 were hospitalized, and one died.

It is unclear how the outbreak might affect fourth-quarter sales. But McDonald's is investing $100 million to regain trust, per a memo sent to employees seen by CNN.

$35 million of the investment is going toward marketing, including a value deal centering on the chain's chicken nuggets, and $65 million will be spent on the franchisees that were worst affected by the outbreak, it said.

I tried the biggest burgers at 5 fast-food chains and ranked them from worst to best

fast food biggest burgers
I tried the biggest burgers at McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, In-N-Out, and Shake Shack.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider; NYC Russ/Shutterstock; Savvapanf Photo/Shutterstock; rafapress/Shutterstock

  • I tried the biggest burgers at McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, In-N-Out, and Shake Shack.
  • Shake Shack's burger was a little overwhelming, in my opinion.
  • Burger King's Triple Whopper impressed me with its flame-grilled patties and fresh toppings.

The biggest burgers at fast-food chains are usually among the more expensive menu items, but which burger is worth that extra cost?

Fast-food costs are a hot topic. Hikes in fast-food prices and "shrinkflation" — a phenomenon in which customers claim menu items are getting smaller while either remaining the same price or costing more — are upsetting customers, and chains are coming out swinging with meal deals aimed at luring customers back. Yet, as some chains see declines in sales, brands are also thinking beyond limited-time promotions.

"We're thinking about value," Wendy's CFO Gunther Plosch said in October, Business Insider reported. "We absolutely believe that value in an environment of value-seeking consumers is not about only executing price-pointed promotions and value deals and value bundles — there's more to that."

In a bid to find out which chain offered the best value on its bigger-ticket items, I recently compared six of the largest burgers sold at fast-food chains. I tested burgers from McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, In-N-Out, and Shake Shack to see how they stacked up in terms of taste, price, and overall value.

Shake Shack's double cheeseburger was a little too heavy for my liking, while Wendy's and Burger King both impressed me with their triple-stacked burgers.

Here's how the biggest burgers at five fast-food chains ranked, from worst to best.

Shake Shack's double cheeseburger, my personal least favorite, was particularly large.

Shake Shack's double cheeseburger was the most expensive I tried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It cost me $12.49, not including tax, making it the most expensive burger I tried. I chose pickles, onions, and Shack sauce as my toppings.

The burger patties were perfectly crispy on the outside and covered in gooey melted cheese.

The double cheeseburger was huge.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The pickles were large and crunchy, and the amount of other toppings was generous. The chain's signature Shack sauce also added a lot of flavor, and the cheese was perfectly melted.

However, the burger was almost too heavy to pick up.

Biting into the Shake Shack burger was a little overwhelming, in my opinion.

The burger was too much for me.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I know I purposefully ordered the largest burger on the menu, but this burger was massive. I saw it as a hindrance rather than an asset, and I struggled to get through more than a few bites.

Despite being the most expensive burger, I'm not sure it was worth it. The burger patties were much thicker than quite a few of the other burgers I tried, and the toppings definitely enhanced the flavor. However, it was simply too big, to the point where it tasted like a giant meat-and-cheese grease-bomb.

My second-to-least favorite burger was a classic: a McDonald's Big Mac.
mcdonalds big mac
McDonald's Big Mac is iconic.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was conflicted over whether the biggest burger at McDonald's was the Big Mac — which is physically the largest thanks to the extra bun — or the Double Quarter-Pounder, which is the burger with the most meat. I decided to try both to appease both sets of McDonald's fans who argue for one over the other.

A Big Mac cost me $7.29 at my local McDonald's, excluding tax.

There was a generous layer of pickles, lettuce, and sauce on the sandwich.
mcdonalds big mac
McDonald's Big Mac was also stacked high with toppings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger patties weren't overwhelming, nor was the sandwich as a whole. I also liked the tangy, creamy Big Mac sauce. However, I thought the added bun made the sandwich taste too much like bread and the other flavors were slightly lost, in my opinion.

The sandwich was a good size and very filling, but I wasn't crazy about the flavor profile.

I simply wanted more flavor happening. Between the extra bun and the generous serving of Big Mac sauce, that was all I could taste. Tomato, cheese, or simply other condiments might have taken the sandwich to the next level.

The 4x4 is the largest burger available at In-N-Out.

The burger, which is on In-N-Out's "not-so-secret" menu, is also referred to as the "Quad Quad," and comes with four beef patties, four cheese slices, lettuce, tomato, spread, and the option to add onions. It cost $9.49, excluding tax and fees.

The giant burger was difficult to hold in one hand, let alone bite into.

The burger was far too large for me to eat in one sitting, though the flavor made me want to.

All of the elements of the burger were delicious, from the juicy beef patties to the layers of cheese and fresh lettuce and tomato.

However, the additional burger patties ended up detracting from the burger's overall ranking instead of enhancing it. The burger was overwhelmingly heavy, with the tomato and lettuce failing to offset the excessive amount of meat and cheese.

The buns couldn't contain the juicy beef patties, and they started disintegrating as I ate the burger. Truthfully, I wouldn't order this again. Although it was tasty, the amount of meat was just too much for me.

I also tried McDonald's Double Quarter-Pounder with cheese. I preferred it over the Big Mac.

Looking at the burger in the box, I immediately noticed that it had more meat than the Big Mac. The meat was clearly the star of the show, with the other toppings barely visible beneath the patties and bun.

The burger cost me $9.79, excluding tax. I thought this was a fair price for the meat-heavy burger.

The Double Quarter-Pounder with cheese comes with a whopping half-pound of meat, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard.

I found this burger to be pretty flavorful, especially thanks to the condiments and large slices of crunchy pickles. However, I wasn't crazy about the bun — while I normally love a sesame-seed bun, I found this one to be pretty bland, airy, and artificial-tasting.

I would order this burger again.

Despite having a lot of meat, the burger didn't feel too overwhelming to eat. I thought it was a realistic sandwich, especially compared to the gigantic burgers from Shake Shack and In-N-Out.

The second-best burger I tried was Wendy's Dave's Triple.

When I arrived at my local Wendy's drive-thru, this extra-large burger wasn't even on the menu. However, thanks to my online research, I knew it could be made and decided to order it anyway. I did wonder how popular this sandwich was, and if many people opt for the triple-patty burger.

The Dave's Triple burger cost $11.24, excluding tax.

Wendy's Dave's Triple burger comes with nearly a pound of beef, American cheese, crisp lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup, mayo, and onion.

The sandwich was difficult to pick up, but all of the ingredients appeared to be well-balanced. There was a large serving of tomatoes, pickles, and cheese, so it didn't look like the beef patties would be overpowered.

I thought this burger had a ton of flavor. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the patties were super juicy.

While I personally couldn't finish the entire thing, I definitely thought the flavors were there and it was a good value for the price.

If I were to change one thing, it would be to remove the mayonnaise. It ended up mixing with the juice from the tomatoes in an unappetizing way, creating a tomato-mayo sauce that I thought brought the other flavors down.

My favorite burger I tried was the Triple Whopper with cheese from Burger King.

Similar to the Dave's Triple, the Triple Whopper also comes with three quarter-pound beef patties, although the ones at Burger King are flame-grilled. The burger cost me $11.29, excluding tax, making it the second-most expensive burger I tried.

Unlike the other burgers, the Triple Whopper only comes with one slice of cheese.

However, I felt that this allowed the other flavors to really come through, and it led to a less gut-filling, more appetizing eating experience.

The lettuce, tomatoes, and onions all tasted fresh, and they added a delicious crunch to the burger.

I also liked the beef patties on this burger the most out of the ones I tried.

I would definitely order the Burger King Triple Whopper with cheese again.

The burger patties had a smoky, savory flavor that made the sandwich taste fresh off the grill. I also thought the patties' shape, which were larger in circumference but flatter than some of the other burgers, made the sandwich easier to eat.

Overall, I really enjoyed this burger and would definitely order it again — if I have the appetite.

While I'm not sure I'm happy to pay more than $10 for any fast-food burger, it was a very generous serving and the most flavorful out of the bunch, without being overwhelmingly huge.
