I'm a dietitian on the Mediterranean diet. Here are 8 groceries I'm buying at Walmart right now.

11 May 2025 at 06:17

I try to follow a Mediterranean diet and buy some of my favorite grocery staples at Walmart.

Lauren Manaker

  • I'm a dietitian who tries to follow a Mediterranean diet with lots of healthy fats and lean meats.
  • I buy some of my groceries at Walmart and love the chain's Great Value frozen berries.
  • Some of my favorite staples to buy at Walmart include raw honey, salmon, and Pearl's olives.

Many of us don't necessarily picture Walmart when we think of buying groceries for the Mediterranean diet.

However, as a dietitian devoted to the Mediterranean way of eating, you can regularly find me buying groceries at the chain.

The Mediterranean diet focuses on wholesome, nutrient-rich foods, healthy fats, lean meats, and vegetables. Fortunately, Walmart has loads of products at prices that don't make my wallet weep β€” even beyond the produce aisle.

Here are a few of my favorite things to buy for the Mediterranean diet I follow at Walmart.

Sahale Snacks has some great nut mixes.
Sahale Snacks pistachios
I lean on Sahale Snacks when I want something sweet to nibble on.

Lauren Manaker

I pick up Sahale Snacks glazed mixes when I'm looking for a tasty snack that also has protein.

The combo of nuts and fruit makes these packs quintessential Mediterranean-diet-friendly snacks for me, especially when I want something sweet.

The maple and pecan mix with dried cherries and apples is one of my favorites. The sweet maple syrup pairs perfectly with the rich pecans.

Ben's Original Ready Rice is great in a pinch.

These Ben's Original Ready Rice packets are done cooking in under two minutes.

Lauren Manaker

Ben's Original Ready Rice can be ready to eat in just 90 seconds, and the microwaveable pouch makes cooking easy with no prep or cleanup. It's a great pantry staple.

One of my favorite varieties is the Spanish-style rice, made with tomatoes, peppers, and savory herbs and spices. The flavors complement many Mediterranean-style dishes.

Salmon is a staple in my diet.

I like to cook small portions of salmon for a quick meal.

Lauren Manaker

When I want a simple dinner, I pair a small portion of fish with lots of veggies and whole grains.

Walmart has some great choices in its seafood section, like its Marketside salmon fillets.

I like adding Grape-Nuts cereal to my diet for extra fiber.

I put Grape-Nuts in my yogurt.

Lauren Manaker

The Mediterranean diet is all about prioritizing whole, nutrient-packed foods. For me, Grape-Nuts fits that bill.

The cereal is made from a mix of whole-grain wheat and barley β€” it's crunchy, rich in fiber, and low in sugar. It's hearty, satisfying, and has this delightful crunch that makes breakfast (or snack time) feel exciting.

The cereal is versatile, too. I sprinkle some on yogurt, pair it with fruit and honey, or just enjoy it from the box with milk.

Pearl's to-go packs of olives are great for snacking.

I like snacking on olives.

Lauren Manaker

Pearl's perfectly portioned cups of olives are my snack-time savior. Olives are tasty and packed with healthy fats and antioxidants.

These packs are ridiculously convenient β€” no messy fingers and no pits, just pure olive-y goodness. I toss them in my bag, and boom, instant Mediterranean vibes anywhere I go!

Olipop is more of a treat than a staple for me.

I try not to drink too much Olipop.

Lauren Manaker

Sure, soda isn't recommended on the Mediterranean diet β€” in part because it can be quite sugary.

However, for those like me who love a sweet drink once in a while, I grab an Olipop.

I like that its varieties contain far less added sugar than classic sodas and still have lots of flavor. Plus, Olipop says its prebiotic sodas can help support digestive health with ingredients like plant fiber and botanical extracts.

Little Leaf Farms has one of my favorite lettuces.

Lauren Manaker

Little Leaf Farms' sweet baby butter leaf lettuce is light, tender, and ridiculously fresh, with a smooth texture that feels high-end without the luxury price tag. On this trip, a carton cost me just $3.

The crisp lettuce is great for elevating a salad or sandwich wrap.

I keep Great Value triple-berry blend in my freezer.

The Great Value frozen berry mixes are often in my freezer.

Lauren Manaker

I usually have frozen fruit from Walmart's Great Value brand in my freezer, and the triple-berry mix is one of my favorites.

Frozen berries are considered as nutritious as fresh ones (they're picked and frozen at peak ripeness), and can be much more budget-friendly. Plus, I love that frozen fruit mixes help me enjoy different berries all year round, even when they're out of season.

Whether I'm tossing berries into a morning smoothie, sprinkling them over Greek yogurt, or adding them to oatmeal, they fit perfectly into the Mediterranean diet.

Honey can be used in marinades, sauces, and more.
Local Hive honey on shelf in Walmart
I use raw honey in a range of dishes.

Lauren Manaker

When I visited Greece, I was both surprised and impressed by how much honey was served with many dishes.

Since then, I have happily been adding delicious raw and unfiltered honey to my yogurt parfaits, smoothies, and even marinades. I like the brand Local Hive.

As a dietitian, my favorite cocktail is only 3 ingredients — and my guests go wild for it

26 April 2025 at 08:00
Two martini glasses with red liquid inside
I never expected such a simple three-ingredient cocktail to become so popular with my guests.

Lauren Manaker

  • My favorite cocktail requires three ingredients and zero stress but produces maximum flavor.
  • A key ingredient is pomegranate juice β€” as a dietitian, I like that it's a source of antioxidants.
  • The other two ingredients are triple sec and vodka, though the drink is easy to customize.

Picture this: It's cocktail hour, guests are arriving, and you're ready to impress them with the most delicious drink they've ever had.

Enter: My favorite three-ingredient cocktail.

It's so downright tasty that people I serve it to often assume it's some secret, ultra-complicated mixology masterpiece. I've had many guests sip it, pause mid-sentence, and say things like, "Oh my gosh, what is this? It's amazing!"

The reactions never get old, and neither does this versatile, elegant-looking drink. It's my secret weapon when hosting, and the best part is … it's actually really easy to make.

Here's how to prepare this cocktail and why I like it so much.

The recipe is pretty foolproof and customizable

Triple sec, Pom, cocktail shaker, Cathead vodka, and cocktails on counter
This is my go-to for cocktail hour or any social gathering where I want to keep things easy and elegant.

Lauren Manaker

My glorious concoction includes pomegranate juice, a touch of triple sec, and vodka. That's it!

Here's how I usually make it:

  1. Add ice to a cocktail shaker, then 2 ounces pomegranate juice (I prefer POM Wonderful), Β½ ounce triple sec, and 1 Β½ ounces vodka.
  2. Shake it for about 15 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into your favorite cocktail glass (bonus points for adding fun garnishes, like pomegranate seeds or a citrus slice).
  4. Sip and enjoy.

The cocktail is versatile, and its key ingredient makes me happy as a dietitian

As a dietitian, I'm a big fan of using 100% pomegranate juice because it contains no added sugars and is loaded with antioxidants. This means I can feel slightly virtuous while sipping this cocktail (even though alcohol isn't good for you).

This recipe is quite versatile, too. Ratios can be adjusted based on preference and it can be customized.

If you're not a fan of sweet cocktails, ditch the triple sec and use a flavored vodka instead.

I like using Cathead Satsuma mandarin vodka, which has a subtle citrus flavor that beautifully complements the pomegranate juice.

It's also a tasty mocktail if you omit the vodka or swap it out for a splash of soda water.

Overall, this drink is ridiculously simple to make, tastes like a million bucks, and has a stunning deep-red color that just looks impressive. I suggest giving it a chance.

I'm a dietitian on the Mediterranean diet. Here are 12 things I buy at Trader Joe's when I don't feel like cooking.

16 April 2025 at 13:27
A cart full of groceries at trader joes
As a dietitian, I get many of my favorite Mediterranean-diet staples at Trader Joe's when I can find them.

Lauren Manaker

  • I've been a dietitian for over 20 years and follow the Mediterranean diet, but I don't love cooking.
  • Precooked hard-boiled eggs, vegan pesto, and frozen pizza from Trader Joe's make my life easier.
  • I also pick up Envy apples, salmon, and vegan creamy dill dressing to use in a number of meals.

When I tell people I've been a registered dietitian for more than 20 years, the assumption is that I love to eat nutritious foods and cook them myself.

I try to mostly eat balanced and nutrient-dense meals that follow the Mediterranean diet, but I don't enjoy spending time planning, cooking, and cleaning.

Thankfully, Trader Joe's has some gems that help me feed my entire family (including a picky child).

Here are 15 of my must-buys to help create healthy and easy meals without spending too much time in the kitchen.

Editor's Note: Product price and availability may vary.

Envy apples seem to stay fresh longer.

Trader Joe's produce selection varies.

Lauren Manaker

Envy apples can be added to salads, "girl dinners," or lunchboxes for an extra crunch, a boost of fiber, and balanced sweetness.

They're appealing because their insides tend to stay whiter longer, allowing for slicing or chopping without worrying too much about being stuck with discolored fruit.

I buy Norwegian farm-raised salmon for a kick of healthy fats and protein.
hand holding a pack of Norwegian salmon in front of the fish fridge at trader joes
Salmon is a pretty versatile protein.

Lauren Manaker

Salmon from Norway is known for its pure taste, beautiful color, and firm flesh. Much of that is due to its balanced fat content and firm texture.

It's also nutrient-dense, providing essentials such as omega 3; vitamins D, B12, and A; and selenium. Plus, it's incredibly easy to cook, especially if I remember to marinate it the night before.

Clif Bars are my go-to for a boost of energy.
hand holding a clif bar in front of a shelf of clif bars at trader joes
Trader Joe's tends to carry an array of Clif bars.

Lauren Manaker

Not loving to cook also means not loving to prep snacks. But because I live an active lifestyle, I know I need to fuel myself with nutrients such as sustainable carbs before I start a workout.

Clif Bars are crafted with a blend of plant-based protein, fat, and carbohydrates. They're my go-to pre-workout snack that requires zero effort in the kitchen.

The vegan kale, cashew, and basil pesto tastes good on almost everything.
hand holding a container of vegan pesto from trader joes in front of the dips fridge
Trader Joe's vegan pesto is one of my favorite buys.

Lauren Manaker

I don't follow a vegan diet, but that doesn't stop me from purchasing Trader Joe's pesto to use on pasta dishes, sandwiches, or as a dip.

This pesto is also my secret ingredient in grilled-cheese sandwiches.

Trader Joe's fruits-and-greens smoothie blend makes morning smoothies a breeze.
hand holding a bag of frozen smoothie blend in the freezer aisle at trader joes
Premade blends are great for easy smoothies.

Lauren Manaker

The blend of frozen produce makes my smoothie-making so easy.

There's no chopping or prepping required when I'm in the mood for a breakfast smoothie β€” I simply toss some into a blender, add milk, and turn it on.Β

Vegan creamy dill dressing elevates a slew of dishes.
hand holding bottle of vegan dill dressing in front of a fridge of dressings at trader joes
Trader Joe's has some great vegan dressings and sauces.

Lauren Manaker

If it were socially acceptable to drink Trader Joe's vegan creamy dill dressing with a straw, I'd do it. I love that it's free from fillers or emulsifiers, and the flavor is incredibly satisfying.Β

The obvious way to enjoy this dressing is on top of salad. However, I also use it as a saucy addition to chicken or fish meals, an ingredient in grain-based dishes, and a condiment on sandwiches.

The organic Mediterranean-style salad kit helps us eat more veggies.

Trader Joe's has an array of salad kits available.

Lauren Manaker

Making a salad isn't extremely labor-intensive.

However, opening a salad kit and dumping all of the contents into a bowl is so much easier than procuring and chopping ingredients and coming up with the perfect flavor combo.Β

Trader Joe's Mediterranean salad kit is packed with veggies and a corresponding dressing packet. I love pairing it with protein and starch for a balanced and healthy meal.

Trader Joe's prepackaged veggie mixes come in handy.

Some mixes have asparagus and mushrooms.

Lauren Manaker

Veggies are a must at dinnertime in my house. Having prewashed and cut veggie and produce kits, such as the Trader Joe's asparagus sautΓ©, makes cooking dinner a breeze.

Simply open the package and sautΓ© everything in some extra-virgin olive oil.Β

The bulgur pilaf with butternut squash and feta cheese is an easy side dish.

Trader Joe's frozen grains can be easy to cook.

Lauren Manaker

Whole grains can be both nutritious and filling. For those who don't like spending too much time in the kitchen, cooking them can be a tedious task.

Precooked frozen grains, such as Trader Joe's bulgur pilaf, help save a ton of time because they just need to be heated through.

Plus, this one is made with butternut squash, and I like the boost of veggies in every bite.

Riced cauliflower stir-fry is a great base for a low-carb meal.

Trader Joe's riced cauliflower stir-fry is fairly low-carb.

Lauren Manaker

Trader Joe's precooked cauliflower rice is a perfect base for a low-carb meal. I just add a protein for a complete dish.Β

For people who don't love cauliflower rice β€” but tolerate it because they want to include more veggies in their diet (such as my husband) β€” mixing this dish with some regular rice can offer the best of both worlds.

Hard-boiled eggs are a secret shortcut in my kitchen.
hand holding a bag of premade hard boiled eggs in front of a fridge at trader joes
I grab already cooked and peeled hard-boiled eggs when I find them.

Lauren Manaker

Precooked and shelled hard-boiled eggs make for an easy breakfast protein, salad topping, or sandwich addition.

Trader Joe's Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates is my solution for pizza night.

When I can find it, I grab Trader Joe's Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates.

Lauren Manaker

Yes, even dietitians want to have pizza night once in a while.

Trader Joe's frozen Tarte au Brie et aux Tomates satisfies the fiercest pizza craving. Plus, heating it up takes less time than we'd spend waiting for a pie to be delivered from the local pizzeria.

I enjoy one serving along with a side salad for a full meal.Β

I've lived in Charleston for 20 years. If you want to have a good time in my city, there are 10 things you need to know.

10 April 2025 at 10:00
Traditional houses in old town Charleston South Carolina
As a longtime local, I've seen a lot of tourists make the same mistakes in Charleston, South Carolina.

benedek/Getty Images

  • After living in Charleston, South Carolina, for 20 years, I have a lot of advice for visitors.
  • Prepare for the humidity, cobblestone streets, and laid-back pace before visiting the city.
  • Check the event calendars and the weather, and make your dinner reservations in advance.

I've called Charleston, South Carolina, home for nearly two decades.

It's a great place that's often voted one of the best cities to visit on travel guides and lists β€” in part for its renowned historic charm, vibrant culture, and incredible food scene.

It draws a lot of visitors, and I've seen many of them make common mistakes or miss out on incredible opportunities in the city.

Here are a few things I want visitors to know before they head to Charleston if they want to have a great trip.

The humidity here is no joke.
Charleston South Carolina
Charleston can get hot and humid during the summer months.

Charleston can get incredibly humid, especially during the summer months. Be prepared for thick, muggy air and pack accordingly β€” light, breathable fabrics are your best friend.

Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and don't underestimate the impact of the heat.

Charleston's culinary scene is about much more than just seafood.

Although seafood is a staple in Charleston's cuisine, the city offers much more than just fish and oysters.

From classic Southern comfort dishes like fried chicken and collard greens to globally-inspired options like Thai, Italian, and French cuisine, there's something for everyone.

Be sure to explore the city's diverse culinary landscape when you visit.

You can't walk around with open containers.
Server holding tray of cocktails
Stick with drinking at bars and restaurants.

semenovp/Getty Images

South Carolina has strict open-container laws, meaning you can't drink alcohol in public places like streets or sidewalks.

I've seen too many tourists strolling with a beer in hand, only to be stopped by local law enforcement. Keep your beverages confined to bars and restaurants to avoid fines and frustration.

Don't miss a stop at the nearby Isle of Palms.

Although downtown Charleston receives much of the spotlight, a trip to the Isle of Palms (about 15 miles away) is well worth your time.

With its pristine beaches, great dining options, and opportunities for paddleboarding or kayaking, it's an escape that balances the historic charm of downtown with a laid-back coastal vibe.

In my opinion, Wild Dunes Resort on Isle Of Palms is also worth a visit for a night or two. It combines Charleston's charm with private beach access, golf courses, a spa, pools, and more.

Leave your heels at home.
Cobblestone street in Charleston
Cobblestone streets can be tough to navigate in heels.

Charleston's historic cobblestone streets may look charming, but they can be a nightmare for anyone in heels.

Wedges or sneakers are a much better choice for strolling through the city if you want to feel comfortable and safe on uneven terrain.

Make sure you know the beach-access and parking rules.

Always read signage about rules.

The city's surrounding beaches are beautiful, but accessing them comes with some rules.

In particular, pay close attention to parking signs β€” some areas require all four tires to be off the road, and failure to comply can result in a ticket.

Plan ahead and know the regulations to avoid any hassles.

There's almost always a festival or event happening, so do your research before you visit.

Charleston's sense of community and celebration makes it feel like there's always a festival taking place.

And, in reality, the city's calendar is packed with events year-round, from the Charleston Wine + Food Festival to Spoleto Festival USA, which is all about performing arts.

Check out the city's event schedule before you visit β€” you might stumble upon a unique experience.

It can get cold here even though we're in the South.

Although Charleston is in the South, don't assume it's warm all year round.

If you're visiting in January or February, be prepared for chilly temperatures that can dip into the 30s. On rare occasions, you might even see snow.

It's not poolside weather during these months, so pack accordingly and plan indoor activities just in case.

Mentally prepare yourself for the city's slower, laid-back pace.

Charleston tends to be swloer

Daniela Duncan/Getty Images

Charleston operates at its own relaxed rhythm, and it's part of the charm. Take your time, enjoy leisurely meals, and stroll through the historic streets without rushing.

Also, remember to be polite and courteous β€” holding doors open for others is a common practice and a great way to show Southern hospitality.

Try not to huff and puff if you're used to hustle and bustle, as that's not the vibe here. Charleston invites you to slow down and soak in its tranquil, easygoing atmosphere.

Book your dining reservations in advance.

Some restaurants in Charleston can be hard to get a table at because they're so popular.

If you're hoping to dine at one of the many popular restaurants in Charleston, it's definitely wise to book your table early.

However, keep in mind that some local favorites, like Chubby Fish, don't take reservations, so be prepared to wait in line for a table.

I'm a dietitian on the Mediterranean diet. When I travel, I buy these 7 snacks at airports.

7 April 2025 at 07:36
inside an airport hudson news store
As a dietitian, there are certain snacks I like to buy at the airport.

Mahmoud Suhail/Shutterstock

  • I'm a dietitian on theΒ Mediterranean diet, and I try to find healthy snacks even when I travel.
  • Nuts and popcorn are some of my absolute favorites, especially when I find brands I like.
  • When there's a Farmer's Fridge in the airport, I'll grab a pesto pasta bowl as a light meal.

As a dietitian who tries to stick to the Mediterranean diet, I've found some go-to airport snacks that make travel days a little more bearable.

These aren't my everyday eats, so they don't fit the Mediterranean diet to a T β€” especially considering this eating style tends to avoid processed foods. However, I think they're a better fit than the ubiquitous bags of potato chips and cookies.

Most airports, especially those across the US, tend to stock similar products at convenience-store-style spots like Hudson News. If you can't find the exact brand or product I recommend, though, I'm pretty confident there will be something similar.

Without further ado, here are my favorite airport snacks.

When I find a Farmer's Fridge, I get the pesto pasta.
hand holding up pesto pasta from farmer's fridge vending machine
There's a Farmer's Fridge in my airport, and I love it.

Lauren Manaker

Farmer's Fridge, a refrigerated vending machine that sells fresh food options, has expanded to nearly 20 US airports (alongside other locations) over the last decade or so. If I need something substantial, it's the first thing I'll look for.

I like that the meals taste fresh and ready to eat. My favorite is the pesto pasta bowl, which is made with quintessential Mediterranean ingredients, like veggies and olive oil.

It's hearty enough to be a light meal when I miss a traditional lunch or dinnertime

Cashews are a great snacking nut.

I love Sahale Snacks flavored cashews.

Lauren Manaker

I always reach for nuts when I travel because they're a staple of the Mediterranean diet and a good source of plant-based protein.

Cashews are my favorite β€” I find them incredibly satisfying.

Sahale Snacks pomegranate-vanilla cashews, in particular, have been a game changer for me. The rich, nutty flavor pairs well with the tart pomegranate-flavored apple chunks and fragrant Madagascar vanilla.

They're my go-to indulgent snack that keeps me fueled and happy while I'm on the move.

Olipop is my soda of choice.
cans of olipop soda at the airport
I like Olipop's root-beer flavor.

Lauren Manaker

Olipop, a prebiotic soda with plant fiber, provides a refreshing, more gut-friendly alternative to traditional soft drinks.

I love how it satisfies my craving for a fizzy drink without a ton of added sugar, which isn't a huge part of the Mediterranean diet. A can keeps me energized and balanced without a crash during long travel days.

If you can't find Olipop, other brands like Culture Pop and Poppi make similar beverages.

Popcorn is a staple.
hand holding up bag of lesser evil popcorn
I like Lesser Evil's Himalayan Gold popcorn.

Lauren Manaker

Popcorn is a whole grain β€” one of the cornerstones of the Mediterranean diet β€” and I find it to be a very satisfying snack. Plus, it's a good source of fiber, which can help support digestion.

Lesser Evil's Himalayan Gold popcorn is dairy-free and made with butter-flavored coconut oil and Himalayan sea salt. It's the brand I reach for in airports when I want something crunchy.

I love snacking on olives.

Pearls has little cups of olives you can eat on the go.

Lauren Manaker

Olives are a delicious and convenient way to incorporate healthy fats into my day. Their rich, briny flavor is both satisfying and refreshing, making them an excellent choice for a quick bite on the go.

I particularly love it when I can find single-serve packs because they make it easy to manage portion sizes and keep everything fresh.

I've found Pearls olives to go at my airport and others, and I specifically like how the container is pre-drained. I don't necessarily want to mess with olive juice on a plane.

Undercover chocolate quinoa crisps satisfy my sweet tooth.

Undercover sells dark-chocolate-and-cherry quinoa crisps.

Lauren Manaker

Undercover quinoa crisps are one of my favorite treats when I'm at the airport. I love the brand's use of simple ingredients that help satisfy my sweet tooth without too much sugar.

The snack consists of crispy quinoa coated in rich chocolate and other flavorings. It provides a satisfying crunch and a dose of whole grains, protein, and fiber.

If Undercover isn't available at your airport, look for other quinoa-based clusters, bars, or crisps.

Harvest Snaps baked pea snacks are a sneaky way to get in veggies on the go.

I like the wasabi-ranch Harvest Snaps.

Lauren Manaker

I often snag a bag of Harvest Snaps, especially when I'm traveling with my 9-year-old daughter. It's one of those snacks that works well for both of us.

They're made from green peas and offer a nice bit of fiber and protein, which keeps us full and fueled during long trips.

Since they're baked instead of fried, they feel like a lighter option compared to regular chips.

Even if you can't find this brand, you'll likely come across other fruit- or veggie-based chip alternatives. Just skim through the ingredient list to make sure there aren't too many additives.

Everything I order for my family at Dunkin' as a dietitian following the Mediterranean diet

1 January 2025 at 06:20
outside a dunkin donuts location
With so many options, it can be hard to know what the best things to order at Dunkin' are.

Helen89/Shutterstock

  • As a dietitian, I follow the Mediterranean diet, but that doesn't mean my family never eats out.
  • Dunkin' is an easy place to grab breakfast when we're in a rush.
  • I try to avoid overly sugary drinks, but I do order the occasional doughnut as a treat.

As a dietitian who tries to follow the Mediterranean diet, I eat a lot of veggies, beans, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.

However, in a pinch, my family and I sometimes have to lean on fast food, especially when we're traveling.

When I visit Dunkin' with my 9-year-old daughter and my husband, I opt for protein-rich options and try to limit any added sugar and sodium.

Here's what I ordered for everyone on our last Dunkin' run.

A hot latte gives me a kick of caffeine.
small hot latte from dunkin
I try to avoid overly sugary coffee drinks.

Lauren Manaker

It's tempting to go for a flavored coffee at Dunkin', but some of them have more sugar than a doughnut.

For example, a small Dunkin' hot coffee with caramel-swirl flavoring has 26 grams of added sugar, while a vanilla sprinkle doughnut only has 16 grams.

Instead, I skip the added sweeteners. Since some dairy is permitted on the Mediterranean diet, a classic latte made with 2% milk gives me the caffeine boost I need without a sugar rush.

Plus, dairy milk adds some protein and nutrients (like calcium).

I'm a fan of the omelet bites.
omelet bites from dunkin
Dunkin' shapes its egg bites like little doughnuts.

Lauren Manaker

Although they're processed β€” aka not very Mediterranean-diet friendly β€” I love Dunkin's omelet bites for a protein-packed breakfast.

Two of the egg white and veggie bites contain a whopping 13 grams of protein, which keeps me full. As a bonus, they help me get a small start on my daily veggie goals.

My husband's beverage of choice is iced green tea.
large iced green tea at dunkin
He tends to get a larger size of green tea.

Lauren Manaker

My husband, who has elevated blood pressure, enjoys an unsweetened green iced tea.

Some research suggests that green tea may help lower blood pressure, particularly in individuals with hypertension. The catechins and other bioactive compounds are associated with helping relax blood vessels, promote healthy blood flow, and reduce the strain on the cardiovascular system.

The iced, unsweetened version at Dunkin' has no sugar, and there's little to it in terms of calories and sodium, so he tends to get a larger size.

Dunkin's avocado toast is also a good pick for my husband.
avocado toast from dunkin
Avocados are a good source of potassium.

Lauren Manaker

Avocado toast is my husband's top food pick at Dunkin', which is convenient for his health needs and our diet.

Avocados are a good source of potassium, a mineral that's also been found to help lower blood pressure. Dunkin's avocado toast contains 371 milligrams of potassium, which is over 10% of the daily recommended intake for men.

Pairing avocado with whole-grain toast provides him with a satisfying on-the-go option that has heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, 6 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of protein.

Orange juice is my daughter's drink of choice.
hand holding a bottle of simply orange juice
The orange juice at my Dunkin' doesn't have added sugar, but it does have natural sugar.

Lauren Manaker

Although my daughter doesn't follow any kind of strict diet, I often feed her along the principles of the Mediterranean diet since that's how my husband and I eat.

Even though the juice contains quite a bit of natural sugar from the fruit, I'm OK with her drinking a serving of orange juice (which I portion out from the slightly larger Simply Orange bottle sold at my Dunkin').

It provides her with nutrients like vitamin C and antioxidants. Plus, it helps her get closer to her fruit quota for the day.

She likes the wake-up wrap.
wake up wrap from dunkin
My daughter gets Dunkin's wake-up wrap with just egg and cheese.

Lauren Manaker

It's not very Mediterranean-diet friendly, but my daughter likes the egg-and-cheese wake-up wrap at Dunkin'.

The serving is relatively tiny, and there isn't a whole grain or veggie in sight, but I'm happy that the 7 grams of protein help keep her satisfied when we're in a pinch.

Plus, the eggs add some vital nutrients, like choline, which is essential to supporting brain health.

I firmly believe an occasional treat can fit into a balanced diet.
sprinkle doughnut from dunkin
We shared a doughnut as a treat.

Lauren Manaker

Although the Mediterranean diet doesn't allow for a lot of processed foods or added sugars, an occasional treat isn't going to completely throw us off.

Dunkin' is known for its doughnuts, so we usually let our daughter pick the variety and split one between the three of us.

I think it's OK to sometimes eat food purely for the pleasure it provides. By sharing, we reduce the risk of overindulging without feeling deprived.

I'm a dietitian on the Mediterranean diet who loves Costco. Here are 10 of the best things I bought there this year.

It's finally pomegranate season, and Costco has a great deal on the fruit.

Lauren Manaker

  • I'm a dietitian who follows the Mediterranean diet, and I shop for pantry staples at Costco.
  • Costco is my go-to spot for pistachios, salad kits, riced cauliflower, and olive oil.
  • I also really enjoyed some of its seasonal products this year, like churro-flavored ground coffee.

As a dietitian, I'm dedicated to the Mediterranean diet β€” a way of eating that highlights wholesome grains, fats, proteins, and produce and avoids processed foods and refined sugars.

Costco is home to bulk bargains and oversized shopping carts that nearly require a license to navigate, but it also happens to be filled with Mediterranean-friendly treasures.

Here are my favorite grocery finds of 2024.

I don't drink much soda, but I love Olipop

Olipop is a prebiotic drink with less sugar than most traditional sodas.

Veronica Thatcher

Soda isn't a staple on the Mediterranean diet, but I enjoy it occasionally.

Olipop prebiotic soda allows me to indulge while packing up to 9 grams of fiber per can. It also has far less sugar than regular sodas.

Costco sells single-flavor bulk packs, but I like to snag the 24-can variety pack when it's available.

Pom Wonderful 100% pomegranate juice is a fun winter treat

I like making pomegranate mocktails.

Lauren Manaker

When the weather gets cooler, I love having pomegranate juice on hand for festive holiday mocktails (the natural red hue elevates any concoction beautifully).

Plus, Pom Wonderful just uses whole-pressed pomegranates β€” no added sugars or fillers.

The organic Mediterranean-crunch salad kit from Taylor Farms is a staple

It's nice to have a salad kit in the fridge for quick lunches or dinners.

Lauren Manaker

On busy weeknights, salad kits are a go-to for easy meal prep.

This Mediterranean-crunch kit from Taylor Farms is packed with a variety of veggies and feta cheese. I like to add some pistachios or cooked fish for extra protein.

I still keep an eye out for my favorite seasonal flavor of Copper Cow Coffee

At the beginning of the year, my local Costco had Copper Cow Coffee's churro flavor, and I still keep an eye out for if it'll return to shelves.

The Vietnamese coffee is made with a blend of robusta and arabica coffee beans and fresh ground cinnamon for a warming cup with a touch of spice.

I still snag regular-sized bags of the flavor at other stores, but the 2-pound bags at Costco were a convenient find. I hope to see them again in 2025.

I buy Purely Frozen organic riced cauliflower for my smoothies

The huge bags of Purely Frozen organic riced cauliflower at Costco are a good value for me.

I add some of it to all of my weekday smoothies to stay consistent with my veggie intake each morning.

Wonderful Pistachios are my go-to snack

I like the salt-and-pepper flavor from Wonderful Pistachios.

Lauren Manaker

Plant-based proteins are a big component of the Mediterranean diet, and pistachios are a complete source β€” meaning they provide all of the essential amino acids.

Costco sells big bags of Wonderful Pistachios' salt-and-pepper-flavored nuts.

They're a no-brainer at snack time, or anytime I want to add some more nutrients to a meal.

I'm glad I came across the Savannah Bee Company honey trio

Lauren Manaker

Honey is a natural source of antioxidants, and it's delicious.

I came across the Savannah Bee Company three-pack at Costco, which offers acacia honey, raw honeycomb, and orange-blossom honey.

I like to mix and match flavors depending on the dish I'm preparing.

JohnnyPops organic sunrise pops were great in the summer

Dietitians need treats, too.

This summer, my local Costco sold JohnnyPops frozen fruit pops, which are made with simple ingredients (minimally processed) and taste really good.

Plus, since they're individually wrapped, they're great for portion control.

I'm definitely keeping my eye out for them next summer.

I'm a big fan of the Kirkland 100% Spanish extra-virgin olive oil

Spanish olive oil has a nice flavor.

Lauren Manaker

I go through a lot of olive oil as it's a staple of the Mediterranean diet.

Although I don't have a favorite variety, per se, I'm partial to Spanish olive oil because of its fruity, nutty, and peppery notes.

The Kirkland Spanish olive oil is cold-extracted and comes in a dark bottle, which should help preserve its quality (and flavor) over time.

The Seeds of Change organic quinoa and brown rice pouches are lifesavers

The microwaveable pouches make it easy for me to serve whole grains.

Lauren Manaker

I like to keep Seeds of Change's organic quinoa and brown rice pouches on hand. They help me get a whole grain (another Mediterranean-diet staple) on the dinner table in 90 seconds.

Although I prefer making brown rice and quinoa the old-fashioned way, precooked grains make life a little easier on busy nights.
