In honor of Valentine's Day, we looked back at the most iconic celebrity couples who ruled the 1990s.

From David and Victoria Beckham to David Bowie and supermodel Iman, some celebrity love stories stood the test of time. Others, like Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, ended in scandal or heartbreak. But all left an indelible mark on pop culture.

Here are the most iconic power couples from the '90s.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were married throughout the '90s, and they remained on good terms after their split.

Bruce Willis and Demi Moore were married from 1987 until 2000. They met at a movie screening and were married just a few months later in Las Vegas.

"We were moving to the gambling tables when Bruce said, 'I think we should get married.' We'd been joking about it on the flight there, but suddenly it didn't seem like he was kidding," Moore wrote in her memoir, The Sun reported.

Willis and Moore called it quits in 1998 but are still friends. They share three daughters: Rumer, 36; Scout, 33; and Tallulah, 31.

On March 30, 2022, Moore and Willis' family announced that he was stepping back from acting after receiving an aphasia diagnosis.

"We wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities," Rumer Willis, his eldest daughter with Demi Moore, said in a post on her account. "As a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him."

"As Bruce always says, 'Live it up' and together we plan to do just that," the statement concluded.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt looked and dressed eerily similar while they were dating.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt dated from around 1994 to 1997 after meeting on the set of "Se7en." They were a red-carpet power couple, and they even sported matching haircuts and outfits.

However, despite Pitt proposing, the two ended things in 1997.

"I was such a kid," Paltrow told Howard Stern in 2015, adding, "You can't make that decision when you're 22 years old.

"I wasn't ready, and he was too good for me," she added.

Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow were also a power couple in the late '90s.

The pair previously met at a dinner party hosted by now-disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein and went on to be costars on the set of "Shakespeare in Love" and "Bounce."

They called things off in 2000.

"I just think we have a very different sort of value system," Gwynethย told Entertainment Weekly in 2003, adding that he was "a great guy."

Paltrow recently gave her blessing to her ex and Jennifer Lopez, who married in July 2022 after initially splitting in 2004.ย

When asked about how she felt about Affleck and Lopez finally tying the knot, Paltrow responded, "Love!!! So romantic!!! Very happy for them," in an Instagram Story during a fan Q&A, according to People.

But Lopez and Affleck split again, finalizing their divorce in January 2025.

Winona Ryder and Matt Damon were introduced by Paltrow while she was dating Affleck.

Winona Ryder and Matt Damon had a brief but public romance, and they even attended the Golden Globes together in 2000. However, not long after that, they split up amicably.ย

"Matt couldn't be a greater, nicer guy. I'm really lucky that I'm on good terms with him," Ryder told Black Book in 2009.

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder got engaged in 1990 but split three years later.

Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder's whirlwind romance became one of the most iconic relationships of the 1990s.

The pair met in 1989 when Ryder was just 18 and Depp was 27, while Ryder was buying a Coke at the premiere of "Great Balls of Fire!" in the lobby of New York's Ziegfeld Theater.

"It was a classic glance," Depp said, according to Rolling Stone, "like the zoom lenses in 'West Side Story,' and everything else gets foggy."

Ryder recalled that when she met Depp, she was a "pure virgin" and had never been in a relationship before.

"There's been nothing in my 27 years that's comparable to the feeling I have with Winona," Depp told Peopleย after meeting Ryder.

Five months after meeting, the pair were engaged. Depp also famously got "Winona Forever" tattooed on his right arm, which he altered to "Wino Forever" after the pair split in 1993.ย

Kate Moss and Johnny Depp's passionate romance was the talk of the town in the late '90s.

Kate Moss and Johnny Depp dated from 1994 to 1998. However, despite only dating a few years, they certainly made an impact as one of the chicest couples of the '90s.

During that time, they had a few famous bust-ups, including, as reported by The New York Times, when Depp destroyed his room at the Mark Hotel in New York City in 1994. Felony mischief charges were dropped after he paid more than $9,000 in fines. Depp also reportedly filled a bathtub with bottles of champagne worth $1,000.ย

"There's nobody that's ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, 'What do I do?' he'd tell me. And that's what I missed when I left," Moss toldย Vanity Fairย in 2012. "I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!"

However, Moss and Depp appear to have reconciled their relationship in recent years. During Depp's tumultuous defamation trial against Amber Heard in 2022, Moss took to the stand to vouch for Depp's character and dispute claims that he once pushed her down the stairs.

Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford married in 1991. At the time, she was 25 and Gere was 42.

The "Pretty Woman" heartthrob and supermodel met at a barbecue hosted by photographer Herb Ritts in the late 1980s. A few years later, the pair spontaneously wed in a Las Vegas ceremony complete with aluminum-foil wedding rings.

However, Gere and Crawford split in 1995 after four years of marriage.ย

"I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things but I don't know if we were ever friends โ€” like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere," she said in an interview with Marc Maron on his podcast in 2016. "And then, as I started kind of growing up and growing into myself โ€” it's hard to change the nature of a relationship once you're already in it."

Crawford also said she and Gere haven't really kept in touch after they went on to marry other people.ย

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee had a public romance in the 1990s and reconnected time and time again over the years.

Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee got married in 1995, just four days after meeting.

Throughout their four-year marriage, the pair were consistently involved in one scandal or another, from over-the-top public displays of affection to a leaked sex tape that was documented in the 2022 Hulu series "Pam & Tommy."

Anderson and Lee finally called it quits in 1998, but they went on to have an off-and-on relationship over the following decade. They share two children: Brandon Thomas Lee, 28, and Dylan Jagger Lee, 27.ย

"I've spoken to Tommy a few times. It's always cordial and we ramble to each other sometimes and I can tell we miss each other's voice. But he's moved on. He has a wife," Anderson said about her relationship with Lee in an interview with Interview Magazine in 2023.

"And the last thing I want to do is be disruptive in anyone's life. Not that I could be. They're probably like, 'Oh god, here she goes again.' But it's part of my story," she continued.

In "Pamela, a Love Story," Anderson's Netflix documentary about her life and relationship with Lee, she spoke to her eldest son, Brandon, about his father, saying she loved him for "all the right reasons."

"I don't think I've ever loved anybody else," she said.

"It's impossible to be with anybody else. But I don't think I can be with Tommy either. It's almost like a punishment," she continued.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown had a volatile relationship after meeting in 1989.

Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown met at the Soul Train Music Awards in 1989, when both were at the top of the music charts. However, it wasn't exactly love at first sight.ย

"I and some friends of mine were sitting behind him," Houston told Rolling Stone of their first encounter. "I was hugging them, we were laughing, and I kept hitting Bobby in the back of the head โ€ฆ I leaned over and said, 'Bobby, I'm so sorry.' And he turned around and looked at me like, 'Yeah, well just don't let it happen again.' And I was like, 'Oooooh, this guy doesn't like me.' Well, I always get curious when somebody doesn't like me."

Their relationship weathered many ups and downs. According to Biography, Houston turned down Brown's first marriage proposal, but they were eventually married on July 18, 1992. In March 1993, Bobbi Kristina Brown, their only child, was born.

However, in the mid-2000s, news broke of problems in their marriage, including drug use and rumors of infidelity. During the marriage, Brown had multiple run-ins with the law. CNN reported in 2003 he was accused of striking Houston across the face, however, he was not convicted and denied ever hitting her. Houston also entered rehab on two occasions for her drug abuse.

"I never cheated, I never did none of that stuff," she told Oprah Winfrey in 2009, two years after the pair divorced. "I just did the drugs."

Whitney Houston died on February 11, 2012, after accidentally drowning in her bathtub. Their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, died in 2015.

Hugh Grant and Elizabeth Hurley were together for 13 years before splitting in 2000.

According to InStyle, Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley met on the set of Spanish film "Remando al viento," or "Rowing With the Wind," in 1987. The pair quickly became one of the most photographed couples in the world.

However, their relationship hit a snag when Grant was famously arrested in 1995 for soliciting lewd conduct with a sex worker named Divine Brown. He was later sentenced to pay a $1,000 fine and attend an AIDS training program, The Guardian reported.

"I felt like I'd been shot," Hurleyย told Barbara Walters in 1995 of her initial reaction to Grant's indiscretion.

The pair worked through the scandal and stayed together for another five years before breaking up. They've remained friends over the years.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise were together throughout the decade.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise met while working on "Days of Thunder" and were married from 1990 to 2001.

"He basically swept me off my feet," Kidman toldย Vanity Fair in 2002. "I fell madly, passionately in love. And as happens when you fall in love, my whole plan in terms of what I wanted for my lifeโ€”I was like, 'Forget it. This is it.' I was consumed by it, willingly."

Despite appearing to be one of the most steadfast couples in Hollywood, Kidman and Cruise later divorced.

Cruise went on to marry actress Katie Holmes in 2006, but they divorced in 2012. Also in 2006, Kidman wed country singer Keith Urban, with whom she has two children.

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love defined the grunge scene of the '90s.

Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love met in a nightclub in 1990 and got married just a few months after meeting.

At the time, Nirvana was at the height of its popularity. The couple became pregnant with daughter Frances Bean a few months into their marriage, during which time they tried to get clean from drugs.ย

Their relationship ended in tragedy when Cobain died in 1994 at 27 years old. His death was determined a suicide.

"He is considered to be the rock star who didn't want fame, the weak pathetic guy who was taken over by this controlling female, and yadda yadda," Love toldย Loudwire in 2015. "He's a hard act to follow. I love him and I always will."ย

David Bowie and supermodel Iman met in 1990.

David Bowie and Iman met in 1990 at a dinner party, where it was apparently love at first sight for the "Rebel Rebel" singer.ย

"My attraction to her was immediate and all-encompassing," he toldย Hello!ย magazineย in 2000. "I couldn't sleep for the excitement of our first date. That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal."

The pair married two years after meeting. Iman later said that they fell in love with who they were to each other behind the scenes.ย

"I didn't want to get into a relationship with somebody like him," she told The Guardian in 2004, according to Biography. "But as I always said: I fell in love with David Jones. I did not fall in love with David Bowie. Bowie is just a persona. He's a singer, an entertainer. David Jones is a man I met."

The pair kept their marriage and relationship relatively out of the spotlight after Bowie gave up touring in 2004. On January 10, 2016, he died at the age of 69 from liver cancer.

"I willย never remarry," she told Porter magazine afterward. "I mentioned my husband the other day with someone, and they said to me, 'You mean your late husband?' I said, no, he is always going to be my husband."

David and Victoria Beckham tied the knot in 1999 and are still going strong.

David and Victoria Beckham met in 1997 when she was well known as "Posh Spice" and Beckham was reaching international fame for Manchester United. In fact, it was the team that brought them together.

"Yes, love-at-first-sight does exist," Victoria told British Vogue in 2016. "It will happen to you in the Manchester United players' lounge โ€” although you will get a little drunk, so exact details are hazy."

The pair got engaged in 1998 and wed a year later in a lavish ceremony in Ireland. Over their decades of marriage, David has reportedly gifted Victoria 14 different engagement rings, according to W Magazine.ย

They have now been married for 25 years and share four children: Brooklyn Beckham, 25; Romeo James Beckham, 22; Cruz Beckham, 19; and Harper Seven Beckham, 13.

Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears became the ultimate pop power couple when they began dating in 1998.

While Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears' relationship didn't reach superstar status until the early 2000s, they began dating in the late '90s, years after meeting on the set of "The Mickey Mouse Club."

"When people [in the public] get too personal, it bothers me. But I'm not ashamed at all to say that I love him from the bottom of my heart. As far as love is concerned, with him, too much is not enough. He's everything," she told The Guardian in 2001. "It is a deeper love now than when I was younger. Like, we've gone through so much together and we've known each other since we were 12 years old. We know each other inside and out."

Britney and Justin broke up in 2002, not long after cementing themselves as an iconic power couple.

In 2021, Timberlake apologized for speaking derogatorily about Spears in an interview and for not speaking out during the "Free Britney" movement concerning her conservatorship. He also addressed the controversy over his infamous Super Bowl performance with Janet Jackson, who was ridiculed in the press after a wardrobe malfunction on stage.

"I specifically want to apologize to Britney Spears and Janet Jackson both individually, because I care for and respect these women and I know I failed," Timberlake said in an Instagram post. "Because of my ignorance, I didn't recognize it for all that it was while it was happening in my own life but I do not want to ever benefit from others being pulled down again."

Bolognese is just one meal you can make in a slow cooker this Valentine's Day.

  • Valentine's Day often calls for dinner out, but cooking in can be just as romantic.
  • However, you don't have to spend hours in the kitchen to prepare a swoon-worthy meal.
  • From pasta dishes to short ribs, here are slow-cooker dinners perfect for Valentine's Day.

Using a slow cooker is a great tool to help put a romantic dinner on the table this Valentine's Day.

Whether you're craving melt-in-your-mouth short ribs, creamy pork chops, or a cozy, slow-simmered Bolognese, the slow cooker makes it easy to impress your date or significant other, without the stress of cooking over a hot stove or not knowing when something is done cooking. With a Crock-Pot or slow cooker, you can set it, forget it, and focus on enjoying the evening.

From decadent mac and cheese to tender, fall-apart brisket, these 10 slow-cooker recipes are perfect for a date night in.

Ree Drummond's recipe for Bolognese is an ideal meal to make in a slow cooker because the longer you cook it, the better it gets. Throw your ingredients โ€” such as crushed tomatoes and browned meat โ€” into the slow cooker at the start of the day to have a simmering pot of sauce by dinner time.

Taste of Home's recipe for chicken Parmesan is an elegant option for Valentine's Day. For making it in the slow cooker, the process is similar to using the oven or the stove, but there's no frying involved.ย

You can also prepare a leg of lamb in the slow cooker, but you might want to sear it first.

Cooking a leg of lamb in a slow cooker might sound complicated, but using the kitchen tool actually takes some of the guesswork out of when the meat is done.

"Leg of lamb is so good as it breaks down in the slow cooker," Chef Hugh Acheson previously told Business Insider. "Cooking in the slow cooker and then finishing another way is going to make sure your meat is at its best. Whether that means re-searing the meat or throwing it under the broiler, you might want to think about other steps to really finish off your meal."

Acheson's recipe for slow-cooked leg of lamb can be found in his book, "The Chef and the Slow Cooker."

For a simple, fresh date-night dinner, try poaching salmon fillets in a slow cooker with lemon, vegetable broth, and dill, according to one recipe by Delish. Pair with vegetables, mashed potatoes, or some kind of grain to wow your date.

Taste of Home's recipe for slow-cooker short ribs screams "special occasion." Short ribs get very tender in the slow cooker, and this recipe makes a sauce for serving over the meat, mashed potatoes, or other vegetables.

While pot roast may sound like an old-fashioned dish to make, it's a longtime favorite for a reason. This dish not only evokes feelings of nostalgia but is a filling, stick-to-your-bones meal ideal for a cozy night in with your loved one.

This simple slow-cooker pot-roast recipe only requires five ingredients, including a surprising one: gingersnaps.

To make Eat Well's creamy garlic pork chops and potatoes, you'll need pork chops, mushrooms, and potatoes, plus ingredients for the decadent cream sauce that goes on top.

The sauce adds much-needed moisture to both the potatoes and the pork chops while adding flavor from the garlic and Parmesan cheese.

By cooking the piece of meat in the slow cooker over a long period of time, it will get tender while still retaining its moisture. For added flavor, cook it with garlic, carrots, and beef stock, as The Pioneer Woman suggests.

For vegetarians, a creamy pot of macaroni and cheese is a delicious โ€” and easy โ€” option for date night.

Celebrity chef Martha Stewart's recipe for slow-cooker mac and cheese is one easy option.

"It is important to use pungent cheeses, such as sharp cheddar, mixed with a little Gruyere or pecorino Romano for extra bite, since the white sauce and pasta will absorb a lot of flavor," Stewart wrote on her website.

I made 'Marry Me Chicken' and the easy comfort-food recipe is perfect for Valentine's Day

13 February 2025 at 14:26
marry me chicken
I made "Marry Me Chicken" and thought the creamy, sun-dried-tomato-filled dish was the perfect meal for Valentine's Day.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • "Marry Me Chicken" is a viral recipe that would be perfect for Valentine's Day.
  • The recipe varies, but I followed one that uses chicken thighs, cream, and sun-dried tomatoes.
  • The recipe blew me away and I can see why this easy meal would be worthy of a proposal.

If you're hoping to get engaged this Valentine's Day, you might want to try making "Marry Me Chicken."

Made with sun-dried tomatoes, chicken broth, and cream, "Marry Me Chicken" is said to be so delicious that it might even elicit a proposal if you make it for your significant other.

The dish went viral on TikTok and Instagram in 2023, and various iterations of the chicken dish, from pasta to soup, have since come around. Despite its recent popularity, the recipe has apparently been around for a while; All Recipes credited Delish for originally creating the Sicilian-inspired chicken dish, which the food magazine first published on its website in 2016.

"When Delish editors started devouring this dish, people started blurting out marriage proposal-adjacent praises for this creamy, savory chicken dinner," Lindsay Funston of Delish wrote. "Hence, the name and this dish were born: A chicken dinner so good, you just might get a proposal by the last bite."

Recipes online vary slightly, but the recipe I followed from the food blog Craving Home Cooked uses chicken thighs, my preferred cut of chicken for a super tender, juicy dish, sun-dried tomatoes, chicken broth, and cream.

Here's how to make the viral "marry me chicken."

I started by gathering my ingredients, which included about 2 pounds of skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs, heavy cream, chicken broth, cut sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, oregano, and crushed red-pepper flakes.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I purchased the chicken thighs, but many of the other ingredients I already had in my kitchen. This made the recipe pretty affordable to make.

I preheated my oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the recipe by Craving Home Cooked.

First, I seasoned the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The recipe only calls for 2 pounds of chicken thighs, but I ended up adding two bone-in, skin-on chicken drumsticks in order to have some leftovers for the week, or for my family of three to each have two pieces of chicken if they liked.

I then heated a few tablespoons of oil in a 12-inch cast-iron pan, and I added the chicken skin-side down.

Right away, the chicken began sizzling and filling the kitchen with a truly heavenly scent.

I cooked the chicken for about five minutes on each side, until the skin was golden brown and super crispy.

Searing the chicken adds a delicious crispy texture to the finished dish.

After the chicken was fully seared, I removed it from the pan to a plate.

I've never fried chicken before, but I was pleased with the final result.

Next, I added three cloves of minced garlic, oregano, and red-pepper flakes to the pan.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It was important to work fast in order to not burn the garlic โ€” you just want it to be fragrant.

Then I added in a half-cup of heavy cream, a cup of chicken broth, a half-cup of chopped sun-dried tomatoes, and a quarter-cup of Parmesan cheese.

I seasoned the sauce with a touch more salt and pepper and brought it to a simmer, stirring it lightly together to melt the cheese and allow the ingredients to fully combine.

I then added the chicken back into the pan.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Before putting the pan in the oven, I ladled a small amount of the creamy sauce and sun-dried tomatoes over the chicken to allow it to bake with all of the extra flavors.

After about 20 minutes, the chicken was fully cooked. I couldn't believe how easy this recipe was.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

When I removed the pan from the oven, my kitchen filled with the delicious scent of fried chicken and sun-dried tomatoes.

I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to make, given that little to no vegetable prep was needed and the cooking time was so short compared to other roast-chicken recipes I've made.

I served the chicken with a few sides: roasted yellow potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and mashed butternut squash.

The flavors all came together perfectly, and the sauce from the chicken added some delicious moisture and flavor to my side dishes.

The chicken, which was perfectly moist on the inside, truly blew me away.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chicken was so tender that you hardly needed a knife to cut through it, and the skin was crispy and flavorful from the seasonings. The savory sauce clung to everything on the plate and added even more flavor with the cream and sun-dried tomatoes.

I understand why so many people love this recipe.

The combination of flavors created a creamy, Italian-inspired meal that would be perfect for a dinner party or cozy date night in.

Overall, I couldn't have been more impressed with this viral recipe, and I could immediately understand why so many people love it โ€” and why it might even inspire a marriage proposal.

  • A Fifth Avenue mansion built during the Gilded Age is for sale for nearly $50 million.
  • The 11-bedroom, 10-bathroom home features ornate details and original features.
  • The mansion was designed by architect Stanford White and spans over 16,000 square feet.

One of the last remaining Gilded Age mansions in New York City is for sale for $49.9 million.

The 16,000-square-foot home โ€” the only fully restored Stanford White-designed mansion on Fifth Avenue โ€” has seven levels and looks out over Central Park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Listed by Carrie Chiang, Andres Perea-Garzon, and Lesley Schulhof of the Corcoran Group, the home has been updated to bring its historic grandeur into the 21st century. One addition is a new "entertaining kitchen" to replace the original trellis room.

A representative for the group told Business Insider that $300,000 in new upgrades has been spent in preparation to list the property "to enhance the current owners' $15 million renovation after their purchase of the mansion in 2012."

Take a look inside this historic Gilded Age mansion.

The Fifth Avenue mansion "embodies the height of Beaux-Arts design and old-world European craftsmanship," according to its listing.

The home is located at 973 Fifth Avenue, which is near the corner of Fifth Avenue and 79th Street in Manhattan. It occupies 25 feet of prestigious Fifth Avenue real estate.

Henry H. Cook, the original commissioner of the building, hired the architectural firm of McKim, Mead, and White to lead the project.

Construction on the building began in 1902 and was completed in 1907, two years after Cook's death in 1905.

There are only a few Beaux-Arts-style mansions still remaining in New York City.

Key characteristics of Beaux-Arts architecture, which was popular in the US in the late 19th century and early 20th century, include "a focus on symmetry," classical features like columns or pediments, and "highly decorative surfaces," such as carved doorways and crown molding, according to the Chicago Architecture Center.

The historic home was designed by Gilded Age architect Stanford White.

White is one of the most famous architects in history. He is known for his style inspired by the Italian Renaissance and is one of the most famous architects to emerge from the Gilded Age in Manhattan.

He is also famous for his death, which was shrouded in scandal.

On the night of June 25, 1906, Pittsburgh millionaire Henry Shaw shot and killed White at Madison Square Garden because of a prior relationship between White and Thaw's wife, chorus girl Evelyn Nesbit, the National Park Service reported. Nesbit was just 16 when she met White.

White was 52 when he died, and much of his architectural legacy was tainted by the scandal in the years after his death.

However, he is now recognized as one of the most influential architects of the early 20th century.

The home is the only fully restored Stanford White-designed mansion on Fifth Avenue.

In the decades following the Gilded Age โ€” and amid financial challenges and changing tastes and values โ€” many of the largest mansions in New York City were torn down or repurposed.

Co-listing agent Andres Perea-Garzon of Corcoran told Mansion Global that this home is one of only five mansions designed by Stanford White still in existence in New York City.

Of those, only two โ€” including this one โ€” are single-family townhouses in Manhattan.

The floorplan has been updated from White's original design but retains many of his choices.

After its current owners purchased it in 2012, the home underwent a multiyear restoration project.

The renovated morning kitchen, pictured above, has a Carrara marble waterfall island that reflects more modern trends.

The home has also been updated to reflect 21st-century living, with upgrades like a "modernized" elevator and nine restored wood-burning fireplaces, per the listing.

It has been transformed into an entertainer's paradise.

The home has five separate kitchens, including a family kitchen, a chef's kitchen, a butler's pantry, a staff kitchen, and a serving kitchen.

The scullery and butler's pantry also each have a dumbwaiter to accommodate service across the entertaining levels.

Despite the upgrades, the home has retained its Gilded Age grandeur.

I compared cheeseburgers from Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings. The chicken chain completely surpassed my expectations.

11 February 2025 at 12:00
applebees and buffalo wild wings cheeseburger
I compared classic cheeseburgers from Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings. The bigger burger impressed me the most.

  • Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings are both classic American chain restaurants.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings, however, is more famous for its wings and chicken offerings than its burgers.
  • So I was surprised by the quality and value of its classic cheeseburger.

Football season may be over, but it doesn't mean your cravings for game-day foods have to be.

In a series, "Tailgate Taste-off," Business Insider is pitting chains against each other to identify the best versions of popular game-day dishes, such as Buffalo wings and cheeseburgers.

Last year, casual dining chains capitalized on America's need for beef, with multiple chains launching new burgers and burger-based value meals.

Applebee's is arguably most famous for its burgers.

Buffalo Wild Wings, on the other hand, is more well-known for its chicken offerings, which include classic wings, boneless wings, chicken tenders, and chicken sandwiches.

However, in a recent ranking of cheeseburgers from four chain restaurants, I was genuinely impressed by the quality of Buffalo Wild Wings' classic cheeseburger.

The chain has also grown in recent years, adding 22 US units between 2022 and 2023, according to data fromย Restaurant Business.

To put Buffalo Wild Wings' burger to the test, I decided to compare it to Applebee's classic cheeseburger, thus determining which chain delivered the better burger in terms of taste and value.

Here's how the classic cheeseburgers at Applebee's and Buffalo Wild Wings compared.

I first tried the classic cheeseburger from Applebee's.

The classic cheeseburger came with a gooey layer of cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the burger as part of the chain's "2 for $2X" deal, which also allowed me to get an order of boneless wings and a chicken tender basket.

However, the burger typically costs $16.99, excluding tax, at the location I visited in Brooklyn, New York.

This year, Applebee's teamed up with the NFL as the league's official grill and bar partner, recognizing overlap between their customer base and NFL viewers.

"We know our guests are football fans," Applebee's chief marketing officer Joel Yashinsky told Business Insider, adding, "This season, we've been all in on the NFL."

Data collected by Applebee's in April showed that 64% of its guests were interested in or very interested in the NFL, and around 34% had watched the NFL in the past year, which helped shape the chain's strategy for the football season, Yashinsky said.

The cheeseburger came with two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles on a brioche bun.

The burger was cooked perfectly medium-rare.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The burger patty's exterior was noticeably dark, initially making me worry that it had been overcooked beyond the medium level I had requested.

However, to my surprise, it was incredibly juicy and even leaned slightly toward medium-rare.

The melted, tangy cheese covered the entire burger, creating a perfectly balanced bite.

I thought the toppings tasted fresh.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The thick slices of red onion added a lot of bold, tangy flavor, as well as a delightful amount of crunch to each bite. I also thought the lettuce and tomato slices tasted fresh.

Although this burger didn't come with any sauce, it was still moist, thanks to the melted cheese and a buttery bun.

However, the Applebee's burger was slightly topped by the burger from Buffalo Wild Wings.

The burger came with two burger patties sandwiched between a soft bun.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the All-American Cheeseburger at my local Buffalo Wild Wings in Brooklyn, New York. It cost $14.49, excluding tax.

I typically regard Buffalo Wild Wings as a chicken chain, known for its traditional and boneless wings, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this classic cheeseburger.

The burger came with two beef patties instead of one, even though it was less expensive than Applebee's.

The burger came coated in layers of melted cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The All-American Cheeseburger came with two beef patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, tomato, and pickles.

Each patty had a crispy exterior and was generously coated in gooey, melted cheese.

It differed slightly from the Applebee's burger in that it already came pre-topped with mayonnaise and mustard, adding even more moisture to this juicy burger.

I found this burger to be an excellent value and devoured every bite.

The patties were crispy on the outside but juicy within.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The mayonnaise and mustard added extra moisture and flavor to this burger, but honestly, it didn't even need it.

It felt like an upgraded take on a classic fast-food cheeseburger, instantly transporting me back to childhood with its fresh toppings, crispy beef patties, and perfectly melted, tangy cheese.

The second patty made a noticeable difference in making this burger even more filling and juicy, elevating the overall experience. And at just under $15, it was also an excellent value.

I tried 5 flavors of wings from Wingstop and ranked them from worst to best

9 February 2025 at 06:12
wingstop sweet chili glaze wings
We tried five flavors of wings from Wingstop and the best one surprised us.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • Wingstop reported 38.8% revenue growth and opened 273 new US locations in 2024.
  • Wingstop's most popular flavors include Original Hot, barbecue, garlic Parmesan, and hot honey.
  • We also tried the chain's newest limited-time-only flavor, Sweet Chili Glaze.

Nothing says tailgating like a classic chicken wing, and arguably no chain is more famous for its hot wings than Wingstop.

A report by the National Chicken Council estimates Americans will eat 1.47 billion chicken wings this Super Bowl weekend.

It comes as chains that specialize in chicken wings, such as Wingstop, are also experiencing significant growth.

In October 2024, the chain, which focuses its menu on bone-in chicken wings, boneless wings, and other chicken items, announced 38.8% year-over-year revenue growth.

Wingstop's senior director of culinary, Larry Bellah, told Business Insider that the chain's bone-in traditional wings are its most popular offering, and the chain's Original Hot, hickory-smoked barbecue, garlic Parmesan, and hot honey rub rank among its most popular flavors, in addition to lemon garlic.

I tried four of the chain's most popular flavors, plus the chain's newest limited-time-only sauce offering, Sweet Chili Glaze, a "sweet and spicy fusion" of sweet chili, rich hoisin, and red chili sauce.

Here's how five Wingstop flavors ranked from worst to best.

My least favorite wing flavor was the chain's barbecue wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Before we go any further, I do have to admit that I've never been a fan of barbecue sauce, from practically any chain. I find it too sticky and sweet, and it lacks the heat I typically look for in a chicken wing.

However, I tried to judge Wingstop's hickory-smoked barbecue wings as impartially as possible.

The wings were evenly coated in savory barbecue sauce.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The chicken wings were fried, but the thick, sticky sauce seemed to slightly overpower the crispiness of the wings.

The barbecue wings were sweet and juicy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was impressed by the amount of actual chicken meat inside the Wingstop wings I tried.

The hickory-smoked barbecue flavor was sweet and smoky, with a rich balance of sweet, tangy, and savory notes. However, when it came to sauces, the barbecue simply landed at the bottom for me in terms of personal preference.

The garlic Parmesan wings came in second to last place.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The garlic Parmesan wings came coated in a generous smattering of cheese, which had partially melted when I opened the box.

The rich smell of cheese and garlic immediately hit my nose, making my mouth water.

These wings were juicy and flavorful.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Overall, I really liked the savory garlic and the richness of the Parmesan cheese.

However, I was still craving that hint of spice.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I'd definitely recommend these wings for people who prefer a mild or non-spicy wing. They pack a ton of buttery flavor into a small bite.

Next up was Wingstop's newest limited-time-only flavor, Sweet Chili Glaze.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Bellah told BI that the flavor was tested and developed in Southeast Asia and that the chain is aware that sweet and spicy flavors are especially popular among younger consumers.

"We could easily add a whole bunch of stuff, but if it's not going to be the best, we don't want to do it. So our goal is to always serve the best flavor, the best wings that we possibly can," Bellah said.

A sprinkling of sesame seeds amped up the flavor on these wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sauce itself was sweet and somewhat similar to an Asian barbecue sauce, with a slight kick.

The wings paired excellently with the chain's signature ranch.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The slightly sweet flavor of the sticky sauce was complemented by the slight spice from the red chili sauce, making for a balanced flavor profile I'd definitely order again.

My second favorite flavor was the chain's Original Hot wings.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Wingstop doesn't offer Buffalo sauce on its menu, but it does have its Original Hot sauce, which is the chain's version of Buffalo.

The wings were generously coated in the vibrant red sauce yet remained incredibly crispy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sticky sauce coated my fingers as I enjoyed these wings, which were perfectly sized โ€” not too big or too small โ€” with just the right amount of tender chicken.

The meat was tender and the spicy hot sauce really impressed me.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

This was the spiciest wing flavor I tried, but still isn't the spiciest sauce offered by Wingstop. The chain also offers an Atomic flavor that really brings the heat.

The sauce had a complex depth, balancing a bold vinegar tang with a buttery richness, finished with a slightly smoky spice that wasn't overwhelming.

The heat didn't overpower the flavor โ€” instead, it enhanced it.

My favorite flavor out of the ones I tried was the chain's hot honey rub.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I've heard from multiple people that hot honey is their favorite Wingstop flavor, by far โ€” and I had to agree.

The wings were super crispy and had an almost caramelized feel and taste to them.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

While the wings do have "hot" in their name, diners who don't like spice shouldn't be alarmed. They had aย veryย slight kick to them but definitely didn't have me reaching for a glass of milk.

The wings had a distinct buttery, sweet flavor to them with just the right amount of salty flavor and spice that seemed to linger on my tongue, without being overpowering.

These wings were incredibly crispy and had the best texture out of the wings I tried.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

While I enjoy saucy wings, these crispy fried wings were crunchy on the outside while keeping the chicken inside tender and juicy.

The slight hint of spice, crispy texture, and buttery flavor of these wings struck the perfect balance.

  • Gracie Hunt, 25, is the daughter of Clark Hunt, who co-owns the Kansas City Chiefs.
  • She works in public relations for the Chiefs and was crowned Miss Kansas USA in 2021.
  • She's spent time with Taylor Swift and is dating former East Carolina quarterback Cody Keith.

Gracie Hunt is heading to the Super Bowl for the third year in a row, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hunt is the daughter of Chiefs co-owner Clark Hunt and the great-granddaughter of the late oil magnate H.L. Hunt. The Hunt family is one of the wealthiest families in America, with an estimated net worth of $24.8 billion, Forbes reported in 2024.

The 25-year-old is not only one of the Chiefs biggest supporters, but she's also a blogger, a former pageant queen, and a new friend of Taylor Swift.ย

Hunt also recently commented on the news that President Donald Trump will be attending the Super Bowl and his recent congratulations to the Chiefs.

"It's pretty cool. It's pretty awesome," Hunt told Riley Gaines on OutKick's "Gaines for Girls" podcast. "Sometimes I just look at whoever I'm talking to, and I'm like, yeah, that just wasn't on my 2025 bingo card. But wow, that's just absolutely incredible."

Long before Lamar and Clark Hunt were considered football royalty, oil tycoon Haroldson Lafayette Hunt was known as one of the wealthiest men in America.

The New York Times reported that H. L. Hunt founded the Hunt Oil Company in 1936 and used his fortune from the oil business to invest in other industries such as publishing, cosmetics, and pecan farming.

At the time of his death in 1974, H.L. Hunt had an estimated net worth of between $2 billion and $3 billion (between $11.5 billion and $17.3 billion in today's money, when adjusted for inflation).

He divided his wealth among his 14 surviving children, Forbes reported.

In 2024, Forbes estimated that the Hunt family is worth an estimated $24.8ย billion. In addition to their sports empire, they continue to own oil and gas companies around the world.

It appears that a love of sports runs in the family.

"Soccer was my first love," she told People in 2021. "I wanted to play in college. I won the championship when I was in high school with my high school team, and played club as well."

However, despite her ambitions to play soccer at the college level, Hunt said she had to find a new passion after multiple injuries prevented her from playing professionally.ย

"After suffering four concussions, that was a dream that I could no longer pursue, which is really hard when you work your entire life to be good at something," she said. "I had to find a new dream."

After her soccer career ended, Hunt competed in several beauty pageants and was named Miss Kansas USA in 2021.

I made Ree Drummond's and Joanna Gaines' Buffalo chicken dips, and only one was good enough for the Super Bowl

6 February 2025 at 12:54

  • I made two different celebrity-chef recipes for Buffalo chicken dip.
  • The Pioneer Woman's recipe was super creamy, thanks to the addition of ranch.
  • However, I thought Joanna Gaines' recipe for Buffalo chicken dip was lacking in flavor.

It's the Super Bowlย this Sunday, and nothing goes better with the big game than a tangy, creamy Buffalo chicken dip with a side of chips.

I decided to try out two Buffalo chicken dip recipesย from celebrity chefsย to see which was more of a crowd-pleaser.ย I made recipes from Joanna Gaines and Ree Drummond, also known as the Pioneer Woman. Gaines and Drummond, both Southern chefs, have gained fame โ€” and fortune โ€” for their family-friendly, comfort-food recipes.

However, in researching and trying out each chef's recipe for Buffalo chickenย dip, I learned they approach the game-day favorite very differently. While Gaines' recipe was easier to make and required simpler ingredients, the Pioneer Woman's recipe was far more flavorful, thanks to the addition of ranch dressing and two different kinds of cheese.ย

Keep reading to learn how to make each recipe, and see how they compare.ย

The Pioneer Woman's recipe for Buffalo-chicken dip calls for fewer than 10 ingredients.

The ingredients for The Pioneer Woman's Buffalo-chicken dip.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

To make The Pioneer Woman's recipe, you'll need:

  • 8ย oz. cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup Buffalo sauce
  • 1/3 cup ranch dressing
  • 1/3 cup blue cheese crumbles
  • 2 cups chopped, cooked chicken
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 4 scallions, thinly sliced, divided
After preheating my oven to 375-degrees Fahrenheit, I started by softening the cream cheese in a medium-sized bowl.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

You could leave your cream cheese out on the counter for a while, or microwave the bowl of cream cheese for around 45 seconds like I did. I then used a spatula to slightly mix the cream cheese to make it even softer and easier to combine with the other ingredients.ย

I then added in the Buffalo sauce.

I used the spatula to gently fold the sauce and cream cheese together, rather than mixing it together vigorously.ย

After adding in the ranch dressing, I mixed it together.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It might take some extra effort to get all the clumps of cream cheese to combine. I didn't have one, but you could also use an electric mixer to ensure all of your ingredients are fully combined.ย

The Pioneer Woman recommended using a store-bought rotisserie chicken for this recipe.

I bought mine from a local Key Food grocery store in New York City for $8.99, excluding tax.ย

I used a knife and fork to gently pull the meat away and placed it on a cutting board.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I then used a large chef's knife to chop and shred the chicken into smaller pieces. You'll need about 2 cups of chicken meat for this recipe, which I found to be roughly half the rotisserie chicken.ย

I then added the chopped chicken, blue-cheese crumbles, cheddar cheese, and scallions into the sauce.

I used the same spatula to mix the ingredients.

After the dip was fully mixed, I spooned it into an 11-inch-by-7-inch casserole dish.

I found that I had the perfect amount of dip for the casserole dish I used.ย

I then topped the dip with the remaining cup of cheddar cheese.

I also grated a little bit more over the top of the dish for some added cheesiness.ย

After cooking in the oven for 20 minutes, the dip was hot, bubbling, and ready to eat.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I let the dip rest for about five minutes before serving it at a friend's party.ย

The edges of the dip were caramelized and super creamy.

The dip itself had a lot of flavor and got rave reviews from the guests. You could really taste the blue cheese and cheddar, while the scallions added a hint of freshness that I haven't had in any other Buffalo dip I've ever made. It was also perfectly spicy, without being overpowering.ย

I would definitely make this recipe for my Super Bowl party or any gathering with friends. Not only was the recipe incredibly easy to follow and only took me 30 minutes from start to finish, but the result was beyond delicious and flavorful.

Joanna Gaines' recipe for Buffalo-chicken dip required simpler ingredients, although many were the same as I used for the previous recipe.

The ingredients for Joanna Gaines' Buffalo-chicken dip.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

To make Joanna Gaines' recipe, you'll need:

  • 1 cup shredded chicken breast
  • 8 ounces of cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup grated yellow cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped chives
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
I started by adding the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

You'll need to either let the cream cheese come to room temperature or microwave it for a few seconds, like I did, to soften it slightly. Since I had already shredded some chicken from the previous recipe, I used the leftovers in this recipe.ย

I then used an electric mixer to combine the ingredients fully.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

This recipe made far less dip than the other one, but you can double or triple the recipe if you need to.

Unlike the Pioneer Woman's recipe, this Buffalo-chicken dip is served cold and doesn't ever go in the oven.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

After spooning the dip into an airtight container, I popped it in the fridge for an hour to cool and set. After it was done, I removed it and spooned the dip into a small bowl for serving.

I liked the addition of the garlic powder and other seasonings, but I preferred the warmth of the previous dip.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I also thought Gaines' recipe could have used more spice โ€” I could barely taste the Buffalo sauce and it definitely didn't have the same kick as the previous dip. The finely chopped chives added a bit of flavor, but I preferred the stronger taste of the scallions.ย

While this recipe was so easy I could have practically made it with my eyes closed, I didn't think it had the same amount of flavor as the dip that took longer to make.ย

Overall, I had to give the win to Ree Drummond's Buffalo-chicken dip.
pioneer woman buffalo chicken dip

Erin McDowell/Business Insider; Monica Schipper/Getty Images

The Pioneer Woman's dip was warm, comforting, and a standout dish at the party I served it at.

I did like that Gaines' recipe required fewer ingredients โ€” if you don't count the seasonings โ€” and only took 10 minutes to make, not counting the 1 hour it took to set in the fridge. Using an electric mixer also made the process a breeze.

However, I'm not sure I would want to serve Gaines' version to my family. It tasted fine, but it didn't bring the wow factor I found with the more elaborate, flavorful recipe from Ree Drummond.

10 easy Super Bowl appetizers you can make in an air fryer

  • Known for their speed, air fryers can help whip up quick appetizers for game day.
  • Air-fryer chicken wings become extra crispy in the air fryer with the addition of cornstarch.
  • From stuffed mushrooms to dumplings, these game-day foods can all be made in an air fryer.

If you're looking to put your airy fryer to use on Super Bowl Sunday, these recipes will help feed your guests in time for kickoff.ย

Air fryers have become one of the most popular kitchen gadgets and are now found in over 70% of US homes, according to Perdue Farms.

Business Insider spoke to cookbook authors Todd Porter and Diane Cu-Porter, the writers behind Air Fryer World, about their go-to game-day appetizers to make in an air fryer, and also did some digging on popular recipes that can be made in the appliance.

Here are 10 easy game-day foods you can make in an air fryer.

Chicken wings are easy to make in an air fryer before tossing with your favorite sauce.

shauntoray grisby/Shutterstock

"You can definitely use the air fryer if you like crispy foods, appetizers, and chicken wings," said Todd Porter and Diane Cu-Porter, the bloggers behind Air Fryer World.

One suggestion they had for air-fried game-day foods is air-fried chicken wings.

"Wings are awesome in the air fryer! The hot circulating air makes them naturally crispy, but for extra crunch use cornstarch for an awesome crust," they said.

To follow Air Fryer World's recipe for ultra-crispy wings, toss your slightly dried chicken wings with your desired spices and olive oil. Make sure your air fryer is pre-heated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit before adding them. When they're done, usually in under 10 minutes, toss your wings in your favorite sauce and put them on the table, ready to eat.

Bacon-wrapped jalapeรฑo poppers are another crowd-pleaser on game days.

Another recommendation for an easy, game-day appetizer is Air Fryer World's recipe for jalapeรฑo poppers with bacon. To make them, start by stuffing hollowed-out jalapeรฑo peppers with cream cheese and cheddar, wrap them in bacon, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes at 380 degrees Fahrenheit until the bacon is crispy.

You can also buy premade frozen poppers and use the air fryer to crisp them up, by following this recipe.

You can make pigs in a blanket using crescent dough and cocktail-size hot dogs.

To make them, roll mini sausages or hot dogs in some crescent dough and set your air fryer to 325 degrees Fahrenheit, according to this Pillsbury recipe. For an even cook, you want to ensure the pigs in a blanket aren't overcrowded, so you might want to make them in rounds if you're making a lot.

However, they should only take a few minutes to get nice and crispy, so they'll still be on the table by kickoff.

Making loaded tater tots is another easy way to utilize your air fryer on game day.

Frozen tater tots can easily be made in the air fryer by spraying an even layer with a little cooking spray and tossing them halfway through the cooking cycle.

Then, get to work choosing your toppings. You can create a loaded tater-tot bar, with additions like sour cream, chopped green onion, shredded cheese, queso, store-bought salsa, or guacamole.ย

If you want to go the extra mile, sautรฉ some bacon or chorizo in a saucepan and top your loaded tots to your heart's content.

Zucchini fries are a fan-favorite side you can make in an air fryer.

These "fries," which The Recipe Critic calls "a low-carb, keto-friendly snack," pair well with the dipping sauce of your choice, be it ketchup, ranch, or even a spicy mayo. For a little added flavor, mix garlic powder or cayenne into your breading before tossing it with olive oil-topped zucchini slices.

You can also dig into some air-fried potato skins while watching the game.

To make, pre-cook your hollowed-out potato skins and place them inside the air fryer, skin-side down, according to one recipe by Air Fryer Eats.

When they're almost crispy, fill them with your choice of cheese and stick them back in the air fryer for a few minutes. Then, top with bacon, green onion, or sour cream.

Frozen meatballs are a quick appetizer you can make in an air fryer.

MZZ001/Shutterstock

Whether you choose to go classic Italian with your flavors or dip your cooked meatballs in barbecue sauce, making meatballs in an air fryer is much faster than a typical oven and will be just as delicious.

Air Fryer World recommends placing an even layer of meatballs into the air dryer and baking them at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for between seven and 12 minutes until they're golden brown.ย

Air-fried coconut shrimp is also great for game day.
coconut shrimp

Foodio/Shutterstock

You can either bread your own shrimp, like this recipe from All Recipes, or follow the instructions on the back of most frozen coconut-shrimp packages for cooking them in the air fryer.

Serve with a tartar sauce or spicy mayo.

Frozen potstickers or dumplings are also easy to make in an air fryer.

Tonyninetyone/Shutterstock

Air Fryer World says that for perfectly crispy dumplings, you'll want to spray them with a little cooking spray before frying them. To get both sides evenly cooked, flip them over at the eight-minute mark and continue cooking for a few more minutes until they're done.

Serve with a little soy sauce and green onion.

You can also make stuffed mushrooms in an air fryer.

YuliiaHolovchenko/Shutterstock

You can make your favorite stuffed mushroom recipe as normal before air-frying them, or go with Air Fryer World's recipe for cheesy stuffed mushrooms. Either way, moisten your air fryer basket or foil with cooking spray or olive oil and arrange your stuffed mushrooms evenly in the air fryer.

Pork sausage also works well as a filling, but you can also use spinach and cream cheese for a vegetarian twist.

Cook them at 360 degrees Fahrenheit for between six and eight minutes, before adding the cheese and cooking for another two minutes.

A full-scale recreation of Anne Frank's Secret Annex shows how her family lived in seclusion. Take a look.

6 February 2025 at 05:42

  • Anne Frank famously kept a diary while hiding from the Nazis during World War II.
  • A new exhibit in New York City features a replica of the family's Secret Annex.
  • The full-scale recreation is furnished as it was when Anne and her family went into hiding.

Anne Frank's "The Diary of a Young Girl" remains one of the most famous and powerful works of the 20th century โ€” and one of the most poignant accounts of a young person's life during the Holocaust.

Now, a new exhibit in New York City allows visitors to step inside a recreated version of the home where Anne Frank and her family once lived in complete secrecy.

"Anne Frank The Exhibition," an immersive experience at the Center for Jewish History near Union Square, features a full-scale replica of the Secret Annex where Anne and her family lived in hiding in Amsterdam for two years.

The annex is furnished just as it was during the Franks' years in seclusion, allowing visitors to experience the space as they did and gain a deeper understanding of the day-to-day lives of Anne, her family, and the others who lived there.

"This exhibition arrives at a time when teaching the lessons of history is urgent," Ronald Leopold, the executive director of the Anne Frank House, which has partnered with the Center for Jewish History to create the exhibit, told Business Insider.

"Across the United States and around the world, we are witnessing a troubling rise in antisemitism and other forms of group hatred. The Anne Frank House has always felt a deep responsibility to counter these forces through education, and this exhibition is a powerful response to that mission."

Photos show inside the new exhibition in New York City.

The exhibit opened to the public on January 27, 2025, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marked the 80th anniversary of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp's liberation.

Frank was one of 1.5 million Jewish children killed by Nazi officials and their collaborators, the exhibit creators said. The Holocaust claimed the lives of 6 million Jewish people.

Inside the exhibit, visitors can walk through a recreation of the famous bookcase entrance that concealed the Secret Annex.

The exhibit is similar to the installation inside the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

However, the actual Anne Frank House is unfurnished, making this exhibit the only way to see how the annex, which occupied two full floors, an attic space, and a loft inside the home, would have looked between 1942 and 1944.

The rooms are fully recreated and furnished to scale according to how they looked when the Franks lived there.

Anne was 13 when she moved to the Annex with her mother, Edith; her father, Otto; and her older sister, Margot, 16. Four others also lived with them: Hermann and Auguste van Pels, their 15-year-old son Peter, and Fritz Pfeffer, a dentist.

The New York City exhibition spans over 7,500 square feet of gallery space between the recreated rooms and a separate space with photographs and other artifacts.

"The recreated Annex is not just a historical space; it is a gateway to understanding the past and, crucially, learning from it," Leopold told BI.

"As we move further into the 21st century, it is imperative to find ways to engage new generations with Anne's story. While rooted in a specific historical moment, her experiences resonate far beyond her time, speaking to our shared humanity and the moral choices we all face," he continued. "This exhibition does more than remember Anne; it challenges each visitor to reflect on how history can inform our responses to hatred and injustice in our own communities today."

The Franks went into hiding in the summer of 1942 and were joined a week later by the Van Pels family.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

The Franks, who had left Germany for Amsterdam in the 1930s, moved into the Secret Annex, as it came to be known, after Margot received a summons to report to a labor camp in Germany.

The entrance was located behind a bookcase in the back of Otto Frank's office building.

The ground floor of the office building was used as a workshop for the Pectacon company, which sold herbs and spices, and the first and second floors were used as storage and office space.

A staircase was later constructed to lead from the main house's first floor to the second floor. It opened out onto a landing where, when the Franks entered into hiding, a revolving bookcase was placed in front of a door that entered into the annex.

The annex's inhabitants lived there for two years in complete secrecy, aside from a small number of helpers who provided them with food and other supplies.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

The families lived primarily on the second and third floors of the building, above the warehouse on the ground floor and office building on the first floor.

A few members of the office staff, known as the "helpers," knew about the people hiding in the annex and helped to conceal them from the warehouse workers and outsiders.

The annex had a kitchen, a bathroom, and rooms that could be converted into bedrooms at night.

The bathroom had a sink and toilet, which the eight inhabitants shared, requiring them to take turns using them in the morning and at night.

At night, the kitchen and dining room was converted into Hermann and Auguste van Pels' bedroom.

During the day, the bedroom of Otto, Edith, and Margot Frank acted as the Frank family's living room.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

Space was limited inside the annex, so it was vital for the inhabitants to rely on each other for support and to share the space peacefully. In the morning, the families had to wear socks and be as quiet as possible so as not to tip off the warehouse or office workers about their movements.

The family enjoyed a quick reprieve during the weekday lunch break, when the helpers would come up to the annex for lunch and discuss the latest news from the war.

In the afternoon, the family would nap or do quiet activities like reading or writing.
anne frank house exhibition
A letter-writing desk was placed inside Otto, Edith, and Margot Frank's room.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

After the workday ended around 6 p.m., the annex inhabitants were able to move freely about the entire office building.

A standard evening inside the annex involved Otto Frank writing business letters on the typewriter and Margot and Anne doing various chores around the house. The two older women would also cook dinner for everyone in hiding using the supplies brought to them by the helpers, according to theย Anne Frank House.

However, as the war raged on and access to high-quality food dwindled, food became less and less appetizing to the family, and especially to Anne.

"Blech, the mere thought that I have to eat that swill makes me nauseated," she wrote in her diary, according to the Anne Frank House.

After dinner, the families would relax by reading, conversing, or listening to the radio before transforming their living areas into bedrooms.

When the sun set, the windows would also be blacked out in order to conceal the family moving about the annex, and they would all have to be silent again.

Anne Frank shared a room with Fritz Pfeffer, who was the same age as her father.

The pair fought over the use of the writing desk.

Anne, a spirited teenager, felt that desk time should be split evenly between herself and Pfeffer, but he disagreed.

Otto eventually intervened in the conflict over the writing desk, which Frank wrote about in her diary.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

"Pfeffer looked very sullen, didn't talk to me for two days and made a point of sitting at the table from 5 to 5.30 anyway... childish, of course," she wrote, according to the Anne Frank House.

Peter, the van Pels' teenage son, was the only inhabitant to have their own room in the annex.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

Much is speculated about Peter and Anne's relationship. She wrote that she wasn't very fond of him when he and his family first moved into the annex.

However, a romantic spark soon developed between the pair, who were both longing for someone to talk to about their circumstances.

She had her first kiss with him on the bed of his small room below the annex's attic.

In addition to the fully recreated annex, there are photos of the family and the war at the exhibition.

The exhibition includes more than 100 original collection items, from Anne Frank's first photo album to handwritten verses written by Anne Frank in her friends' poetry albums.

The exhibit is the first opportunity for the public to see what the annex would have looked like completely furnished.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

Otto Frank, the annex's sole survivor, famously refused to refurnish the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.

"After the Anne Frank House had been restored, they asked me if I wanted to have the rooms refurnished. But I said, 'No. They took everything out during the war, and I want to keep it that way,'" he said in an interview in 1962, according to the Anne Frank House.

The executive director of the Anne Frank House says this historic exhibition is crucial today amid rising antisemitism.
anne frank house exhibition
A photo of Anne Frank inside the exhibition.

John Halpern/Anne Frank The Exhibition

"The exhibition provides perspectives, geared toward younger generations, that are certain to deepen our collective understanding of Anne Frank and hopefully provide a better understanding of ourselves," Leopold said in a statement.

"By bringing this exhibition to New York โ€” a place with many ties to Anne's story โ€” the Anne Frank House is expanding the reach of our work to encourage more people to remember Anne Frank, reflect on her life story, and respond by standing against antisemitism and hatred in their own communities."

11 game-day foods you can make in a slow cooker

5 February 2025 at 10:15

Buffalo-chicken dip is a game-day favorite you can easily make in a slow cooker.

Sarah Olson/The Magical Slow Cooker

  • Aย slow cooker or Crock-Pot can come in handy when prepping food for the Super Bowl.
  • From dips to ribs and spicy wings, game-day appetizers can easily be made in a slow cooker.
  • Chili is another easy and hearty slow-cooker recipe to make before you watch the game.

Football season is in full swing, and whether you're watching for the actual sports or just want to see what expensive outfit Taylor Swift is wearing to watch the Chiefs, that also means a whole lot of game-day cooking.ย

However, you don't have to spend Super Bowl Sunday sweating over a hot stove to serve game-day favorites like Buffalo Chicken dip, ribs, or hot wings.

Business Insider spoke with Sarah Olson, the author of "The Magical Slow Cooker," about her go-to game-day recipes. These recipes can all be made in a slow cooker, allowing you to throw everything into your Crock-Pot and get back to the game.

Here are 11 game-day foods you can make in a slow cooker.

Meatballs are a filling game-day appetizer you can make in a slow cooker.

Olsonย recommends her recipe for slow-cooker meatballs on game day.

"I love grape-jelly meatballs, which only have three ingredients," she said. "They're so good everyone will ask you for the recipe."

Another recipe by Spend With Pennies suggests placing your seasoned, raw meatballs into the slow cooker, topping them with sauce, and letting the slow cooker finish them off.

Beer brats can also be made in a slow cooker.

Brats with onions, peppers, and garlic simmered in the slow cooker along with beer are another one of Olson's favorite game-day recipes.

"When the guests arrive they get to choose when they want to eat since the slow cooker keeps these brats nice and warm during the game," she wrote on her website, The Magical Slow Cooker.

Plus, you can even choose peppers to reflect the colors of your favorite team.

Brisket is perfect for feeding a larger family.

"Brisket is a natural partner for the slow cooker, as a gentle braise renders it meltingly tender," Kim Laidlaw wrote in her cookbook, "Everyday Slow Cooking: Modern Recipes for Delicious Meals."

Laidlaw's recipe for slow-cooked braised brisket includes garlic, onion, dry red wine, carrot, and chicken or beef stock, with a chimichurri sauce.

Pork shoulder is a slow-cooker staple you can use to make game-day sliders.

"One dish I think is so versatile is pork shoulder in a slow cooker with broth and a little salt and pepper," Laidlaw told Business Insider. "I just braise that and then you can turn into so many different things."

One of the best ways to utilize slow-cooked pork shoulder is to make pulled-pork sliders with all that tender meat. Then, top with barbecue sauce and slaw.

You can even make Buffalo chicken wings using a slow cooker.

Olson's recipe for slow-cooked Buffalo chicken wings calls for thawed chicken wings, hot sauce, and unsalted butter. To get the wings super crispy, make sure to remember to remove them from the sauce after 2.5 hours of cooking and broil them in the oven before adding them back to the slow cooker.

Pulled chicken with barbecue or Buffalo sauce is another great way to use your Crock-Pot.

One of the benefits of using a slow cooker is starting with a basic protein and jazzing it up.

From Mexican-food-inspired spices to Indian simmer sauces, there are lots of ways to transform shredded-chicken dishes into something show-stopping by adding it to tacos, sandwiches, or salads.

Mac and cheese can also easily be made in a slow cooker.

If you want to add some carbs to your game-day menu, look no further than a piping hot pot of mac and cheese. Olson's recipe uses cream cheese, milk, sharp cheddar, and white sharp cheddar.

Celebrity chefย Martha Stewart's recipe for slow-cooker mac and cheese is also easy to make.

"It is important to use pungent cheeses, such as sharp cheddar, mixed with a little Gruyere or pecorino Romano for extra bite, since the white sauce and pasta will absorb a lot of flavor," Stewart writes.

Buffalo-chicken dip is another quick and easy favorite.

Sarah Olson/The Magical Slow Cooker

One of the benefits of making aย slow-cooker Buffalo chicken dip โ€” or any other side dish in a slow cooker โ€” is that the recipe can be prepared well ahead of time and reheated when you're ready to eat.

"There are so many different dips that can be made in the slow cooker, you can make Buffalo-chicken dip, bacon-cheeseburger dip, cheesy bean dip, Rotel and Velveeta Dip, and even artichoke dip," Olson said. "I like to serve all these dips with tortilla chips. Can't choose one dip? Make two or more for a variety for your guests."

Queso is a go-to game-day food that can easily be made in a Crock-Pot.

Sarah Olson/The Magical Slow Cooker

"I often make a queso verde dip in my slow cooker for game days," Olson told Insider.

Her recipe for queso verde uses white Velveeta cheese, salsa verde, milk, and sour cream.

Chili is another popular recipe to make on game days.

Sarah Olson/The Magical Slow Cooker

Spicy chili and chipotle turkey chili is another recipe you can leave simmering all day until you're ready to dig in. Paired with some cornbread, you've got a hearty meal that will last until the final whistle blows.

Slow cookers work perfectly to create an impressive โ€” and tasty โ€“ nacho bar.

Sarah Olson/The Magical Slow Cooker

"I use three slow cookers for a nacho bar, which is a great way to utilize those smaller slow cookers," Olson said. "I use one slow cooker for nacho cheese (store-bought), one for seasoned ground beef, and one for refried beans. I also make a toppings bar that has salsa, sour cream, guac, olives, onions, and tomatoes."

9 celebrity outfits that missed the mark at the 2025 Grammys — sorry

  • The 67th annual Grammy Awards are underway at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
  • Some celebrities nailed the glamorous vibe of the event, but others missed the mark.
  • Chrishell Stause wore a white jumpsuit that was a little too bridal.

Music's biggest stars often take major fashion risks at the Grammy Awards โ€ฆ but they don't always pay off.

At the 67th Grammy Awards, which are taking place on Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, some stars got it right with their red-carpet outfits. Chappell Roan and Billie Eilish wore high-fashion looks ripped straight from the runway, while others like Raye and Kacey Musgraves leaned into classic, sophisticated glamour.

However, other looks on the red carpet fell short โ€” some were too gaudy, others overwhelmed the celebrities wearing them, and some were just far too daring.

Here are looks that missed the mark at the 2025 Grammys.

Kelsea Ballerini

Ballerini's makeup and hair were flawless, and the neckline shape of her black beaded minidress added intrigue to an otherwise safe option.

However, the entire Tamara Ralph look was overwhelmed by the oversized off-the-shoulder opera coat that trailed behind her.

Chrishell Stause

The "Selling Sunset" star's Galia Lahav look, which featured a lace, boned bodice and wide-legged pants, would've worked as a white jumpsuit, but the added skirt is too much โ€” it's more bridal than red carpet.

Jaden Smith

Smith has never been one for subtle red-carpet fashion, and the 2025 Grammys were no different. The castle headpiece veered too odd for our tastes, and his Louis Vuitton suit was part-classic, part-cartoonish with its oversized arms and nipped-in waist.

Drew Afualo

The TikTok star's look had too much going on. The pink and gray mismatched panels almost look unfinished, and the triangular clasp on the waist doesn't match with the rest of the look.

The saxophonist would look more at home at Comic-Con in this superhero-inspired golden ensemble.

It featured a spandex one-piece, a shimmering gold cape, and metallic golden boots.

Kahan's ivory suit and pants were an odd pairing with a pure-white shirt and tie โ€” and the pants look like they could use an iron or a fresh press.

Sierra Ferrell

Grammy winner Sierra Ferrell walked the red carpet in a pearl-covered ball gown that was more costume than couture. The look featured a pearlescent tulle overskirt that overwhelmed her, and the matching scepter and headpiece were just a little too over-the-top.

Poppy walked the red carpet in a look by Simone Rocha that featured a red jacket that slightly resembled a raincoat and a light-pink tulle skirt. The final look seemed a touch too juvenile for the glamorous event.

St. Vincent wore a business-inspired look that featured an open-front, black blazer, and fishnet tights. Finished with a pair of white dress socks, the look felt too casual for the Grammys red carpet.

17 times Taylor Swift has broken records throughout her career

  • Taylor Swift has set and broken numerous records throughout her career.
  • She was once the youngest artist ever to receive the album of the year Grammy.
  • Swift made history at the 2024 Grammys with her fourth album of the year win.

Taylor Swift made history at the 2024 Grammy Awards when she took home album of the year for the fourth time.

However, that's not the first time Swift has broken records โ€ฆ or smashed her own, for that matter.ย

In 2010, Swift became the youngest artist ever to receive the album of the year award with "Fearless." She's since surpassed the likes of Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Simon, to become the most-awarded album of the year winner in history.

Following the success of her record-breaking Eras Tour, which grossed a whopping $2 billion, Forbes put Swift's estimated net worth at $1.6 billion.

Here's every time Taylor Swift has broken records throughout her career.

After Swift released her single "Our Song" in 2006, she became the youngest artist in history to have written and performed a No. 1 song on the Hot Country Songs chart.

Swift was just 17 years old when the song charted, making her the youngest artist in history to achieve the top spot on the country charts.

"Our Song" peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, becoming the third consecutive Hot 100 top-40 single from Swift's debut album, "Taylor Swift."ย

In 2009, Swift became the youngest person to ever win entertainer of the year at the Country Music Association Awards.

"I will never forget this moment because in this moment everything I have ever wanted has just happened to me," she said as she accepted the award, E! News reported.

She was 19 at the time.

"Country music is my home," 20-year-old Swift later told reporters in the Grammys press room, Billboard reported. "Country music is my love. But to have it organically crossover this year? It's just been fantastic. I think the healthiest thing you can do when making music is [to] remove stereotypes from it."

Billie Eilish later beat Swift's record as the youngest recipient of the album of the year award. Eilish was 18 when she won the award in 2020.

When Taylor Swift won the Grammy for album of the year for "1989" in 2016, she became the first woman to win the coveted award twice.

Swift also won the award for best music video for "Bad Blood" and best pop vocal album for "1989."

At the 2021 Grammy Awards, Swift won album of the year for "Folklore," her ninth studio album, which she wrote and produced entirely during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The album is regarded as one of Swift's best works and became the best-selling album of 2020, Rolling Stone reported.

Theย only other artists who have won album of the year three timesย are Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Simon.

At the 2024 Grammy Awards, Swift made history when she took home the top award for her 10th studio album, "Midnights," becoming the first and only person to have won the award four times.ย

In her acceptance speech, Swift thanked Jack Antonoff, her longtime collaborator and "Midnights" producer, and praised her fellow nominee Lana Del Rey.

"I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love or when I'm shotlisting a music video or when I'm rehearsing with my dancers or my band or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show," Swift told the crowd.

Swift has won the most American Music Awards in history. She holds a whopping 40 awards.

Swift surpassed Michael Jackson, who holds 26 awards, and Whitney Houston, who holds 22.

Swift was also recognized with the "Artist of the Decade" award at the 2019 AMAs and performed a medley of some of her most popular songs.

Swift broke the record, per Guinness World Records, with 29 hits, including recent releases like "Fortnight," featuring Post Malone, and classics like "Mine" and "Bad Blood."

She was nominated for six awards at the 2024 Grammys, including for song of the year for "Anti-Hero." This marked Swift's seventh nomination for song of the year, the most of any artist.

She broke the record again this year after she received a nomination for "Fortnight."

She has never won the award, but was previously nominated for "You Belong With Me," "Shake It Off," "Blank Space," "Lover," "Cardigan," and "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)."

Before 2024, she shared the record with Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie, who have six nominations in the category.

Following the release of "Red (Taylor's Version)," Swift broke Shania Twain's record for the most weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart.

Shania Twain previously held the record, spending 97 weeks at No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart. However, Swift broke the record in 2022, spending 99 weeks at the top of the country charts.

The song, which is just over 10 minutes long, beat out longtime record holder Don McLean, whose eight-minute track "American Pie" held the top position for four weeks in 1972.

Swift's "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)" is an extended version of her original song, which was released on "Red" in 2012.

She broke her own record after her "Fortnight" music video, which she also directed, won the top prize. In her acceptance speech, Swift talked about the energy on set while she was making the video and publicly acknowledged Chiefs player Travis Kelce as her boyfriend.

"Something that I'll always remember is that when, when I would finish a take, and I'd and I'd say cut, and we'd be done with that take, I would always just hear someone cheering from across the studio where we were shooting it, and that one person was my boyfriend, Travis," she said in the speech.

"On April 19th, 2024, THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT became Spotify's most-streamed album in a single day, and Taylor Swift became the most-streamed artist in a single day in Spotify history," a post from Spotify on X wrote.

Swift had previously set this record with the release of "1989 (Taylor's Version)" and "Red (Taylor's Version)." Streams of Swift's catalog totaled over 122.9 million on the day "Red (Taylor's Version)" was released in 2021, about three-quarters of which came from the new album.ย

I ordered the same meal from Applebee's, TGI Fridays, and Chili's. Only one chain served up the best flavor and value.

31 January 2025 at 07:41
chilis grill and bar old timer burger with cheese
I was impressed by the classic cheeseburger from Chili's.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

  • I compared the same meal at Applebee's, TGI Fridays, and Chili's.
  • I ordered Buffalo bone-in wings and a classic cheeseburger at each chain.
  • Applebee's impressed me with its juicy burger but I thought Chili's served the best overall value.

In the casual-dining "value wars," Applebee's, TGI Fridays, and Chili's are three of the biggest competitors.

To determine which of these chains should be crowned the winner, I ordered the same meal โ€” a drink, an order of Buffalo wings, and a classic cheeseburger โ€” at all three and compared them on taste and value.

When it comes to performance, Applebee's, TGI Fridays, and Chili's are faring differently.

TGI Fridays filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November and Reuters reported the chain is facing $37 million in debt. In November, Applebee's also reported a 5.9% decline in same-restaurant sales in the third quarter compared to the year before.

Chili's, meanwhile, has been gaining momentum. In January, the chain's parent company reported a 31% growth in same-restaurant sales from October 2023 to December 2024 and a nearly 20% increase in traffic year over year.

In a conversation with Business Insider, Chili's CMO George Felix said the chain's rise has been propelled by simplifying restaurant menus, changing the chain's approach to marketing and social media, and focusing on value, quality, and hospitality at restaurants.

"You're seeing a lot of competitors throwing different combo meals and meal deals out there at different price points. But I think what's really hard to replicate is we're delivering all of that, combined with a really excellent experience," Felix said.

Here's how the same meal compared at Applebee's, TGI Fridays, and Chili's.

I visited a locally owned TGI Fridays in Massachusetts.
tgi fridays
The TGI Fridays location I visited is locally owned and operated.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

This location is locally owned and operated, so it is not included in the larger company's bankruptcy filing.

TGI Fridays Inc. owns 39 locations in the US, but there are 122 franchised locations in the US and 316 franchised international locations that are not included in the bankruptcy filing.

I ordered a diet soda at all of the chains I visited.
tgi fridays diet soda drink on a red and white table
The sodas were about the same size across chains.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The soda at TGI Fridays was roughly the same size as the drink from Chili's and Applebee's. It cost $3.29, plus tax.

TGI Fridays also offered a cocktail menu, but it didn't seem as central to the brand as the margaritas for Chili's and Applebee's.

Chili's and Applebee's both advertised their drinks on prominently placed menus on the dining table, while TGI Fridays just had the regular cocktail section inside its standard menu.

Chili's and Applebee's also emphasized new, seasonal cocktails. Chili's offered a seasonal margarita of the month for $6, making the restaurants feel more playful.

I ordered an eight count of Buffalo wings.
tgi fridays buffalo wings
The Buffalo wings came to the table less than piping hot.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The wings at TGI Fridays didn't come in a house Buffalo sauce but rather were tossed in Frank's Red Hot Buffalo sauce.

The order of eight wings cost $12.19, plus tax, which was cheaper than the wings from Chili's and Applebee's. These wings also came with a side of sliced celery sticks.

These wings were large and the meat was extremely tender.
tgi fridays buffalo wings
The wings were cooked well and crispy.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I was given a selection of drumsticks and flats in the order. However, while these wings were perfectly meaty and crispy on the outside, the sauce didn't blow me away.

These wings tasted like standard Frank's Red Hot sauce, just like countless others I've had before, with nothing unique or exciting to set them apart.

The burger from TGI Fridays was just OK.
tgi fridays cheeseburger
The cheeseburger came with fries.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The cheeseburger includes all the classic toppings: tomato, lettuce, American cheese, red onion, and pickles.

While there's no sauce on the burger by default, ketchup is available on every table, and you could easily ask for mustard or ketchup to be added if you prefer.

The burger was priced at $12.49, before tax.

TGI Fridays is also offering a value meal deal that sells its classic cheeseburger with fries and a drink for $9.99, plus tax, which was the most affordable offer out of the three chains.

I thought the TGI Fridays burger needed more sauce.

I thought the burger lacked flavor. Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The bun was dry and untoasted, setting the tone for what turned out to be an overall burger experience that lacked a lot of flavor and moisture.

Although I requested my burger medium, it leaned toward well-done and lacked juiciness. While I appreciated the flavor of the meat itself and the toppings tasted fresh, my praise for this burger ended there.

I reminded myself that this is the chain's simplest burger, so perhaps it's only fair to expect a straightforward flavor profile without much pizzazz.

My second favorite meal came from Applebee's.
applebees in brooklyn
I visited an Applebee's in Brooklyn (not pictured.)

Oleg Solta/Shutterstock

I arrived at an Applebee's in Brooklyn on a busy weeknight with two other people and was seated promptly.

I also expected to pay slightly more at this restaurant than at the Chili's and TGI Fridays restaurants I visited since they were both located in Massachusetts, not New York City. However, I found that the prices didn't differ greatly between the two states.

I ordered a drink and nine classic bone-in Buffalo wings to start.

At my local Applebee's in Brooklyn, an order of nine classic bone-in wings costs $18.99, excluding tax and fees. They came with celery sticks and sides of ranch and blue cheese.

I also ordered a diet soda. It cost $3.29, plus tax.

The wings were crispy and the largest out of the three chains.

The wings were tender and juicy, with the sauce delivering a rich, buttery flavor. The Buffalo sauce struck a great balance between its spicy kick and savory, buttery notes, creating a well-rounded flavor.

The Applebee's burger really impressed me.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I ordered the burger as part of the chain's "2 for $2X" deal, which also allowed me to get an order of boneless wings and a chicken tender basket for about $30.

However, the burger typically costs $16.99, excluding tax, at the location I visited in Brooklyn, New York.

The cheeseburger came with two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles on a brioche bun.

The burger was cooked perfectly medium-rare.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The exterior of the burger patty was quite dark, which initially made me worry it had been overcooked past the medium level I requested.

To my surprise, the burger turned out to be incredibly juicy and leaned slightly toward medium-rare.

The melted, tangy cheese enveloped the entire burger, creating a perfectly balanced bite. The thick slices of red onion added a bold flavor, while the lettuce and tomato were fresh.

Although this burger lacked a sauce, it remained far from dry, thanks to the melted cheese and a buttery bun.

Despite having similar ingredients to the TGI Fridays burger, this one tasted juicier and more flavorful.

My favorite meal in terms of taste and value came from Chili's.

I went to a Chili's restaurant in Massachusetts.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I visited a Chili's in Massachusetts, but I've also been to the location in Queens, New York, before.

Chili's has always impressed me with its portion sizes, value-focused meals, and its famous Triple Dipper, which the company said is popular among younger customers. CNN reported in October that it accounts for 11% of Chili's sales.

Like at the other two chains, I got a diet soda.

I got an order of eight Buffalo wings to start.

Chili's offers boneless and bone-in wings in several flavors, including honey chipotle, barbecue, and Nashville hot.

The order of eight wings cost $14.99, plus tax.

The wings were coated in buttery Buffalo sauce.

The wings from Chili's were slightly on the smaller side but packed more flavor.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The wings came in a selection of drumsticks and flats. Though they were a little on the smaller side compared to the wings from Applebee's, they were piping hot when I picked them up and fried to a golden crisp.

They also packed much more flavor than the other wings I tried, and the chicken meat inside was moist and juicy.

The wings paired well with the chain's signature ranch and decadent blue cheese dressing.

I also ordered a classic cheeseburger.
chilis grill and bar old timer burger with cheese
I ordered an Oldtimer with cheese.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The Oldtimer burger, which I ordered with cheddar cheese, comes topped with pickles, lettuce, sliced tomato, diced red onions, and mustard.

It cost $13.29, plus tax, and was the largest burger I tried when it came to overall size.

I also could have ordered this burger as part of the chain's "3 For Me" menu and gotten an appetizer, the burger with fries, and a non-alcoholic drink, for $10.99, plus tax. This made me feel like Chili's was really serving up value.

The cheddar cheese was perfectly melted, and the other ingredients tasted extremely fresh.
chilis grill and bar old timer burger with cheese
The burger had a generous helping of mustard on it.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The only downside was the generous serving of mustard smeared onto the burger patty. The mustard had a strong, sharp flavor, and while I do like mustard, it was a bit overpowering for me.

But the rest of the burger was impressive. The char on the slightly smashed patty was wonderfully crispy, and the other ingredients were incredibly fresh. The red onion added a nice punch of flavor, while the bun held everything together perfectly.

Overall, I liked my experience and meal at Chili's the most.
the author outside chilis
Chili's impressed me the most in terms of taste and value.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The food tasted high-quality, and I enjoyed the vibe and more youthful, playful atmosphere of both the restaurant and the menu.

The overall cost of the meal was pretty similar across all three chains, though, as I had expected, the Applebee's in New York was slightly more expensive than the two restaurants I visited in Massachusetts.

Even though the meal from Chili's wasn't the cheapest โ€” the meal from TGI Fridays cost less โ€” I thought it provided the best value when I considered the experience and taste of the food.

"I think a lot of brands mistake the lowest price point for being [the best] value, and I don't think that's giving consumers enough credit," Chili's CMO George Felix told Business Insider. "So for us, we believe value is the entire holistic experience of what you pay for what you get."

Ultimately, when it came to the most flavorful meal with the highest-quality-tasting ingredients, Chili's was the winner for me.

  • There have been 67 album of the year winners since the first Grammys ceremony in 1959.
  • Taylor Swift made history in 2024 as the first person to win album of the year four times.
  • Beyoncรฉ took home the night's top prize for the first time in her career at the 2025 Grammys.

Every nominee at the Grammy Awards hopes to clinch the top prize of the night: album of the year.

The coveted prize has previously gone to Hollywood icons like Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and The Beatles, and is always the last award of the night to be announced.

At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, which was held on Sunday in Los Angeles, Beyoncรฉ won for her album "Cowboy Carter." It marked Beyoncรฉ's first win in the category, despite being the most nominated and most decorated Grammy winner of all time.

In 2024, Taylor Swift took the prize and made history as the first person to win album of the year four times. She previously tied with Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, and Paul Simon, who all hold three album of the year wins.ย

There was strong competition in the category this year. Grammy darlings Swift, Billie Eilish, and Beyoncรฉ, as well as pop superstars Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, whose hit songs "Espresso" and "360" dominated pop culture this summer, were all nominated. Another nominee, Chappell Roan, has had a standout year, with six Grammy nominations to show for it.

Rounding out the category was the multi-talented Andrรฉ 3000 and Jacob Collier, whom BI's Callie Ahlgrim called "dark horses in a pop-heavy album of the year contest."

Here's every winner of album of the year throughout history.

Meet Kyra Kennedy, the youngest daughter of health secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

  • Kyra Kennedy, 29, is one of the youngest members of the Kennedy dynasty.
  • She is a New York City socialite, model, and fashion enthusiast.
  • She has not publicly commented on her father Robert F. Kennedy's nomination for health secretary.

Kyra Kennedy is one of the many young members of the Kennedy family making a name for herself.

The 29-year-old model and socialite is the youngest daughter of health secretary nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

She's also a mainstay at fashion shows and fashion-brand popups, making her one to watch from "America's royal family."

Kennedy Jr., known for his misleading claims about vaccine safety, could lead the Department of Health and Human Services in President Donald Trump's new administration if he gets enough votes following his confirmation hearing.

Kennedy Jr. had previously announced his own candidacy in the 2024 presidential election before breaking from family tradition by supporting Trump, the Republican candidate.

Multiple members of his family, including his cousin Caroline Kennedy and John F. Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, have publicly denounced his nomination. His six children โ€” he has four sons and two daughters โ€” have not publicly commented on his nomination.

Here's everything you need to know about Kyra Kennedy.

Kyra Kennedy was born on August 22, 1995. She is the second child of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his second wife, Mary Richardson.

People reported that Kennedy and Richardson started dating before the politician's divorce from his first wife, Emily Ruth Black, was finalized in 1994.

Kennedy married Richardson that same year, and they were married until Richardson's death by suicide on May 16, 2012. The couple were estranged at the time of her death, The Guardian reported.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has two children with Black: Robert "Bobby" Kennedy III, 40, and Kathleen Alexandra "Kick" Kennedy, 36.

Kennedy had four children with Richardson: Conor Richardson Kennedy, 30; Kyra LeMoyne Kennedy, 29; William "Finn" Kennedy, 28; and Aidan Caohman Vieques Kennedy, 24.

Kennedy married his third wife, actor Cheryl Hines, in 2014. They have no children together, though she has a daughter from a previous marriage.

Kennedy made her debut in society at a Paris debutante ball.

Harper's Bazaar reported that then-21-year-old Kyra was "the latest Kennedy making headlines" after she made her formal debut in society at a 2013 debutante ball in Paris.

The event, known as "Le Bal," was held at the Automobile Club de France in Paris, and all attendees wore haute couture. As reported by Harper's Bazaar, Kennedy wore Dior, whom she had already interned with when she made her debut.

Vanity Fair reported that other debutantes that year included Larry David's daughter Romy and Lady Amelia Windsor, a member of the British royal family.

She attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Kennedy has been a longtime fashion enthusiast.

In addition to earning her degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, she also held internships at Kenneth Cole and Dior, Harper's Bazaar reported.

Kennedy was a member of the "Snap Pack," which also included the likes of Tiffany Trump.

The New York Times coined the term "Snap Pack" in 2016. The group was made up of uber-rich young people who lived and partied in Manhattan, and who documented their lives for their many devoted Snapchat and Instagram followers.

Kennedy's high-profile social circle also included people like Gaia Matisse, the great-granddaughter of artist Henri Matisse, Donald Trump's daughter Tiffany Trump, and up-and-coming fashion designer Andrew Warren.

Her father reportedly barred her from using social media after an online incident with a reporter.

In 2016, Page Six reported that Kennedy's dad, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., had barred her from using social media after her reported involvement in a "cyberbullying" scandal.

The tabloid reported that Kyra Kennedy, then 20, had used her Instagram page to write mean comments on an Instagram page owned by Allie Jones, a New York writer who had written a post about The New York Times' "Snap Pack" article for The Cut, a subsidiary of New York Magazine. She later deleted the comments, per Page Six.

Jones recounted the experience in another article for The Cut, titled, "I'm Being Cyberbullied on Instagram by a Kennedy."

"Mr. Kennedy has spoken to Kyra and informed his daughter that their family does not bully people. He has instructed her to shut down all of her social media accounts immediately," a representative for the politician told Page Six.

The ban didn't last forever, however, as the Daily Mail reported in September 2019 that Kennedy had resumed using her social media pages.

Kyra Kennedy did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

In May 2016, she made her modeling debut posing for her friend and fellow Snap Pack member Andrew Warren's clothing line during New York Fashion Week, Harper's Bazaar reported.

According to her Instagram, she frequently attends brand pop-ups, fashion shows, and Fashion Week events held by major brands, from Gucci to Tod's and Louis Vuitton.

As a member of one of America's most famous families, she's certainly one to watch.

Kennedy now has over 30,000 followers on Instagram, where she documents her outfits, glamorous lifestyle, and travels.

Judging by her page, she still has many celebrity friends, including comedian Larry David's daughter Cazzie.

Meet Kick Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s oldest daughter

  • Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy is the elder daughter of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
  • She was named after her great-aunt who died in a plane crash.
  • She has not publicly commented on her father's nomination for health secretary.

Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy became the latest young Kennedy to make headlines when she was linked to actor Ben Affleck last summer, but she's more widely known as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s eldest daughter.

Kennedy Jr. could lead the Department of Health and Human Services in President Donald Trump's new administration if he gets enough votes following Wednesday's confirmation hearing.

Kennedy Jr. had previously announced his candidacy for president before breaking from family tradition by supporting Trump, the Republican candidate, in the 2024 presidential election.

Multiple members of his family, including his aunt Caroline Kennedy and cousin Jack Schlossberg, have publicly condemned his nomination. However, his children โ€” he has four sons and two daughters โ€” have not publicly commented on his nomination.

And while his eldest daughter, Kick Kennedy, has not spoken out about her father's political ventures, she has made headlines for different reasons in recent months.

Here's what you need to know about Kick Kennedy, a member of the newest generation of America's most famous political dynasty.

Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy is 36 years old.

She was born in 1988 and is the daughter of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Emily Ruth Black, his first wife and the mother of his two oldest children. (RFK Jr. is now married to his third wife, Cheryl Hines.)

Kick Kennedy hasn't commented on her father's political endeavors, though other Kennedy family members have.

She was named after her great-aunt who died in a tragic plane crash.

Kick Kennedy's namesake, Kathleen "Kick" Agnes Cavendish, was born in 1920. She was the daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Kennedy and the sister of John F. Kennedy.

Just months after getting married in 1944, her husband was tragically killed in combat. Following his death, she entered into a relationship with Earl Peter Wentworth Fitzwilliam, a married man, People reported.

The couple planned to travel to Paris to seek her father's approval, but their 10-seat plane encountered severe turbulence and crashed in the mountains between Paris and Cannes.

Both she and the earl, who was piloting the aircraft, died instantly. She was only 28 years old. A write-up in The Atlantic said only her father attended her funeral.

She has five siblings, four of whom are half siblings from her father's second marriage to Mary Richardson.

The younger Kick Kennedy has one biological sibling from her father's first marriage to Emily Ruth Black: Robert "Bobby" Kennedy III, 39.

Her half siblings include Conor Kennedy, 30; Kyra Kennedy, 29; William Finbar Kennedy, 27; and Aidan Caohman Vieques Kennedy, 23.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. married Cheryl Hines, his third wife, in 2014. They have no children together, though she has a 20-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.

After her half-brother Conor was linked to Taylor Swift in 2012, Kick called the star "really sweet."

Though the relationship was short-lived, Swift was spotted spending time with Conor and the Kennedy family at their compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, in summer 2012.

"She's really sweet. It was a moment, really," Kick Kennedy told the New York Post in 2014 when asked what it was like for the superstar to date her brother. "But we always have exciting things going on โ€” exciting people to meet."

Swift and Conor Kennedy's relationship reportedly ended in October 2012, though the fling may have inspired a few songs on her fourth studio album, "Red."

Her own dating life has been pretty low profile.

Kick Kennedy dated Paul Simon's son Harper in 2014, E! News reported.

She later dated Matthew Mellon, a member of the wealthy Mellon family, before he died on his way to a drug treatment facility in 2018, People reported.

Outlets reported earlier this month that she was getting to know Ben Affleck in the wake of his very public divorce from Jennifer Lopez.

Page Six reported that the two had been spotted together at the Polo Lounge in the Beverly Hills Hotel, though Affleck's representative told People the two weren't dating.

The rumors about Ben Affleck led the internet to discover a disturbing story Kick Kennedy once shared about her dad during an interview.

Following the reports about Affleck, people clamored to find out more about the lesser-known member of the Kennedy clan. A 2012 profile of Kick Kennedy in Town & Country included a particularly wild story about her father.

Kick Kennedy told the magazine that when she was 6 years old, her father decapitated a dead whale they'd found on a beach near the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port. She didn't share why her father wanted the whale head but said he "likes to study animal skulls and skeletons."

Problems arose when the family began making the five-hour drive from Hyannis to their home in New York with the whale head strapped to the roof of their minivan.

"Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would pour into the windows of the car, and it was the rankest thing on the planet," she said.

She said that to deal with the leaking whale juice, "we all had plastic bags over our heads with mouth holes cut out."

"People on the highway were giving us the finger," she added. "But that was just normal day-to-day stuff for us."

It's a bizarre story, but it isn't the only time Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been in the news for questionable behavior involving animals.

In 2014, he took a dead bear cub from the road and posed with it in a photo as a "prank." The incident made local headlines.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he'd "been picking up roadkill my whole life," NBC reported earlier this month. "I have a freezer full of it," he said.

She's acted in several television shows over the years.

Kick Kennedy has appeared in several one-off episodes of popular shows like "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Gossip Girl," and "The Newsroom."

She also acted in an off-Broadway play in 2014, which "Today" called a "modern retelling" of Sophocles' "Antigone."

"I'm really lucky," she told The Associated Press at the time. "I've grown a lot just studying this part and I hope I can do it justice. I couldn't really ask for a better story to tell right now. It's just sort of magical that everything fell into place."

She's since shied away from the spotlight to focus on philanthropy.

Kick Kennedy is a member of the founders' circle of the charity Well Beings, an organization that focuses on "the well-being of animals, people, and the planet," according to the company's mission statement.

While she's a member of one of the country's most famous and influential political families, she has spoken publicly about not wanting to rely on her pedigree to get ahead.

"People ask me, 'What's it like to be a Kennedy?'" Kick Kennedy said in a 2014 interview with the New York Post. "Maybe it's just the temperature of the water, but I'm just like, 'I have no idea.'"

"When I see my face or name in the tabloids, I get a knot in my stomach. It's just not me โ€” it's reading something that's not real," she added.

She has, for now, a relatively modest 27,000 followers on Instagram.

I compared the same breakfast sandwich meal from McDonald's and Burger King, and one was better value

23 January 2025 at 07:44

We compared sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwiches and hash browns from two major fast-food chains.

Erin McDowell/Insider

  • I ordered the same breakfast from McDonald's and Burger King to compare them on taste and value.
  • Burger King's biscuit was practically leaking butter but it tasted better than the McDonald's one.
  • I also thought Burger King's hash browns were a great value.

There's nothing like a classic fast-food breakfast sandwich to start your day.ย

Breakfast is an area of opportunity for chains to win back customers as people return to the office in droves and need a morning pick-me-up. In August, Dunkin' launched a new $6 breakfast meal deal, joining the long list of chains offering value meals as customers become more price-conscious.ย

I tried the same breakfast meal, which included a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich and hash browns, at two of the biggest fast-food chains: McDonald's and Burger King.ย

Here's which chain had the best breakfast, based on taste and value.

I ordered a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich and hash browns from each chain. I started by trying out Burger King's.

My meal cost $8.58, plus taxes and fees. I ordered it through the Doordashย app from my local restaurant in Brooklyn, New York.

It seemed like a fair price for how much food I received.

I got a medium order of hash browns and thought it was more than enough.

A medium-size hash brown from Burger King cost me $3.19.

It came packed to the brim with small fried hash browns.

I enjoyed the hash browns from Burger King โ€” I thought they were fluffy on the inside and perfectly crispy on the outside.

They could have used a little sauce for added flavor but were just fine on their own as well.

I also got a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich from Burger King.

It cost $5.39 and came wrapped in wax paper to keep the heat and buttery biscuit safely tucked inside.

Right away, I noticed how buttery this sandwich was.

Butter had completely coated the wax paper wrapping.

Once I opened the sandwich, I saw right away why the wrapping was so buttery.

The biscuit was a dark yellow color and almost crispy in texture. This told me right away that a lot of butter was added to whatever batter they use to make their biscuits.

The sandwich came with a biscuit, sausage patty, egg, and a slice of American cheese.

When I bit into the breakfast sandwich, it tasted heavily of butter, but I could still taste the juicy sausage patty and egg.

There were small pockets of butter or oil on the top of the biscuit.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

However, that didn't really turn me off. There's nothing worse than a dry biscuit ... which I would discover later on in this taste test.

The sausage patty was perfectly thick and moist, while the eggs were light and fluffy.

The biscuit was crumbly rather than flaky, but it complemented the other flavors and provided the perfect vehicle for the other ingredients.

I ordered the same items from McDonald's: a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich and one hash brown.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

My meal cost $9.38, plus taxes and fees. I also got it delivered through the Doordash app.

It was slightly more expensive than the meal from Burger King, so I was anxious to see if the flavor would live up to the higher price tag.

When I compared the same meals from Burger King and McDonald's, the meal from the larger chain was also more expensive.

I got one hash brown, which appeared to be smaller in size than the medium order of hash browns from Burger King.

However, it was more expensive at $3.69.

The hash brown was perfectly crispy on the outside.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It wasn't as fluffy as the Burger King hash browns. The potato inside was more shredded in texture and had a lot more moisture. I liked it but thought the serving size was a little small and expensive for getting basically the same menu item taste-wise.ย

I'm a big fan of McDonald's McMuffin breakfast sandwiches but haven't tried many of their biscuit options.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit sandwich cost me $5.69, which was more expensive than the one from Burger King.ย

The biscuit was lighter in color than the Burger King one but looked more like a traditional biscuit.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

However, when I bit in, I was surprisingly a little disappointed.

I thought the biscuit was dry and crumbly.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

It stuck to the roof of my mouth. The texture made it difficult to really taste the other ingredients โ€” all I could taste was the biscuit.

I didn't have any urge to finish this sandwich.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

The eggs and sausage were both pretty moist, but not enough to overpower the dry biscuit. In my opinion, the biscuit could have used some of the butter I found the Burger King sandwich practically drenched in.

Overall, I enjoyed both meals and thought they were both good deals in terms of value.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

I then had to decide which meal I preferred based on each item.

Both of the breakfast sandwiches were around the same size and had the same ingredients, but I preferred the one from Burger King.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

Even though it bordered on too buttery, the Burger King option had more flavor and the biscuit's consistency allowed the other flavors to come through. The biscuit from McDonald's was simply too dry for my tastes and made the other ingredients fade into the background.

Taste-wise, the hash browns were equally delicious.

Erin McDowell/Business Insider

However, the Burger King order came with more and they were less expensive. In my mind, that gave the smaller chain an obvious win.

Overall, I preferred the breakfast from Burger King.

I thought the biscuit sandwich was flavorful and moist, and the hash browns were a great value for the size of the order. In my own personal breakfast wars, this fast-food chain came out on top.
