CDC Cuts Cruise Ship Health Inspectors as Puke-Filled Year Rages On

There have already been a dozen cruise ship outbreaks in U.S. waters in 2025.

A norovirus outbreak on a luxury Cunard cruise ship left almost 200 people sick, causing symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Vessel Sanitation Program released details on Monday about the norovirus outbreak on the Queen Mary 2.
It said about 183 of the 2,538 passengers on board β about 7% β fell ill during the voyage. It also said that 14 of the 1,232 crew members also reported being sick during the journey.
The ship departed England on March 8, according to CruiseMapper, sailing first to New York before continuing to the eastern Caribbean, with stops in Barbados, St Lucia, and Grenada.
In an email statement to Business Insider, a Cunard spokesperson said a "small number of guests" reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on the Queen Mary 2.
"We are continuing to closely monitor the guests and, as a precaution, completed a comprehensive deep clean of the ship and immediately activated our enhanced health and safety protocols, which are proving to be effective," they added.
The Queen Mary 2, Cunard's flagship vessel, was the largest passenger ship ever built at the time of its construction. It has 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, and the first-ever planetarium at sea.
The ship frequently makes transatlantic crossings, with ticket prices starting at around $1,400 per person, and luxury duplex suites upwards of $35,000.
Although norovirus is sometimes referred to as the "cruise ship virus," outbreaks on cruise ships only account for about 1% of all reported cases in the US, according to the CDC.
More common outbreak locations included healthcare facilities, restaurants, and schools.
It's an extremely contagious virus, and is the leading cause of vomiting and diarrhea in the US. According to the CDC, there are about 2,500 reported norovirus outbreaks in the US each year.
Norovirus can be spread through direct contact, eating food or drinking liquid contaminated with the virus, or touching contaminated surfaces.
The CDC said that Cunard responded to the outbreak by increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolating sick passengers and crew, collecting stool specimens for testing, and consulting with the Vessel Sanitation Program.
A few days after Cunard reported the outbreak, a smaller norovirus outbreak was reported on a different cruise ship.
According to the CDC, 7 of the 461 passengers and 22 of the 405 crew members reported being ill during a voyage on the Seabourn Encore, which belongs to Seabourn Cruise Line.
Last week, BI reported on how passengers aboard Cunard's Queen Anne were advised to take precautions as the vessel navigated a piracy-prone area in Southeast Asia during its maiden world voyage.
Passengers were told that promenade decks would be closed and only essential open-deck lights would remain on, to minimize the ship's visibility, and that they should keep their curtains drawn.
The Queen Anne is Cunard's fourth luxury cruise ship and can accommodate 2,996 guests, in addition to 1,225 crew.
In an early clinical trial, an experimental norovirus vaccine given as a pill produced defensive responses exactly where it countsβin the saliva of older people most vulnerable to the explosive stomach bug.
The results, published this week in Science Translational Medicine, are another step in the long effort to thwart the gruesome germ, which finds a way to violently hollow out innards wherever people goβfrom restaurants to natural wonders and even the high seas. It's a robust, extremely infectious virus that spreads via the nauseating fecal-oral route. Infected people spew billions of virus particles in their vomit and diarrhea, and shedding can last weeks. The particles aren't easily killed by hand sanitizers and can linger on surfaces for up to two weeks. Exposure to as few as 10 virus particles can spark an infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, norovirus causes an average of between 19 and 21 million cases of acute gastroenteritis in the US every year, leading to 109,000 hospitalizations and 900 deaths. This racks up an economic burden estimated to be $2 billion to $10.6 billion.
For most, the gut-busting bug is miserable but usually over in a few days. But older peopleβespecially those with underlying medical conditionsβare vulnerable to severe outcomes. About 90 percent of people who die from a norovirus infection are people age 65 or older who live in long-term care facilities.

Norovirus, commonly called the stomach flu or the 24-hour bug, is on the rise across the US this winter.
And Norovirus outbreaks β which are most common from November to April β have reached one of their highest levels from any time in the past 12 years, according to data from theΒ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In its most recent data available, the CDC reported 91 norovirus outbreaks across the US for the first week of December β the highest number of outbreaks for the same week since 2012, and the fourth-highest number of outbreaks recorded in any week of the year since 2012.
The CDC defines an outbreak as "an occurrence of two or more similar illnesses resulting from a common exposure that is either suspected or laboratory-confirmed to be caused by norovirus."
Here's what you need to know about norovirus:
Norovirus presents itself much like food poisoning β with a rapid onset of nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain that generally lasts between one and three days.
But there are a few key differences between the two.
How it spreads: Once someone becomes exposed to norovirus β which is spread through direct contact and can linger on surfaces for days or even weeks β they can become infected within a day or two.
The symptoms of food poisoning, on the other hand, will typically present much faster than that, in a matter of hours, said Dr. Shruti Gohil, a professor and the associate medical director of epidemiology and infection prevention at the University of California, Irvine's School of Medicine.
How to treat: Though the treatments for both might be similar β drinking water, eating bland foods, taking anti-diarrheal medication β Gohil told BI that when in doubt, you should act as if you have norovirus.
That's because of how highly contagious norovirus is compared to food poisoning. Norovirus is one of the most contagious infections we know of, and to help prevent its spread, you need to be vigilant about washing your hands and disinfecting surfaces, she said.
The most important thing to do if you're experiencing symptoms is to stay hydrated. When you're losing so much fluid, particularly if you can't keep any fluids down, there's a risk of dehydration, which can become life-threatening, Gohil said.
Look for these symptoms as warning flags: If you reach the point of dizziness or light-headedness, Gohil said, then you may be dangerously dehydrated, and that's when you need to get yourself to an ER. When you get a headache, that's an early warning sign of dehydration and an indicator that you need to increase your fluid intake, she added.
People who are very young, very old, or immunocompromised can have infections that last longer, and they may be at higher risk of dehydration.
Pay special attention: Gohil also mentioned a few signs of dehydration to look out for in people who can't speak for themselves, like babies and nonverbal seniors. And that's if they cannot form tears, if their mouth looks dry, if they're despondent, or if they're not really reacting to you.
In terms of the total number of norovirus outbreaks, Gohil said it's pretty bad this year.
One of the main reasons for that, she said, is that more and more people are gathered together for the holiday season this year than they did in the last few years when COVID-19 was a more immediate concern.
"We've got more outbreaks, people are unmasked, people are engaging with each other, they're not cleaning their hands, clearly," Gohil said. "Cleaning and disinfection and all that stuff is down. And we need to shore those practices back up."
Before the pandemic, there were also years when norovirus outbreaks spiked just like they are now, and fluctuations like this are normal, Gohil said.
Everyone has an important role to play in helping prevent the spread of norovirus, Gohil said.
"You could literally, just by being careful yourself, save other people's lives indirectly. That's really, really important for people to understand, that you live in a community, " she said, "and that you have a responsibility to care, and to keep yourself clean, and keep others safe."
In other words, wash your hands.
