  • On Sunday, the Washington Commanders will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship.
  • If the Commanders win, they'll make their first Super Bowl appearance since 1992.
  • At 24, Jayden Daniels could become one of the youngest starting quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl.

Only four teams remain in the race for Super Bowl LIX: the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Washington Commanders.

While the Chiefs, Bills, and Eagles have been playoff staples in recent years, the Commanders have had a different story.

The team finished last season 4-13, but under the leadership of new head coach Dan Quinn, the team has rebounded in spectacular fashion, going 12-5 in the regular season before winning their first wild card playoff game since the 2005 season.

On January 18, the Commanders continued their postseason run by upsetting the No. 1 seeded Detroit Lions 45-31 at Ford Field to reach their first NFC Championship since their Super Bowl-winning 1991 season.

Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is a key part of the team's recent successes. In the regular season, he threw for 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns, and rushed for an additional 891 yards and six touchdowns. And he hasn't slowed down in the postseason either, having thrown for 567 yards and four touchdowns.

It should come as no surprise then that Daniels was awarded the 2024 Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year awards by the Professional Football Writers of America in January 2025.

Now, if the Commanders can get past their division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, Daniels will have a chance to make history yet again at Super Bowl LIX by potentially becoming the second youngest quarterback to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

If he succeeds, he'll be just 24 years, 1 month, and 22 days old when he joins this list of greats.

Here are the 10 youngest starting quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl, and how old they were at the time.

Of course, Tom Brady made this list twice. The New England Patriots legend won his second Super Bowl with the team in 2004, defeating the Carolina Panthers 32-29.

9. Jim McMahon

Jim McMahon was part of the star-studded 1985 Chicago Bears lineup, which included Walter Payton, Richard Dent, and William "The Refrigerator" Perry when they defeated the Patriots 46-10 to win the franchise's only Super Bowl in January 1986.

McMahon rushed for two touchdowns, becoming the first quarterback to do so in the Super Bowl.

8. Terry Bradshaw

Terry Bradshaw won the first of his four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1975 in a 16-6 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He would go on to win again the following year, as well as in 1979 and 1980.

7. Troy Aikman

Troy Aikman helped the Dallas Cowboys usher in a new era. Despite the team finishing 1-15 during his rookie season in 1989, the team rebounded just a few years later to beat the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl XXVII in 1993. Aikman threw for 273 yards, including four touchdowns, and earned the title MVP. It was the first of his three Super Bowls with the Cowboys franchise.

In a 2022 interview with The Los Angeles Times, Aikman's agent, Leigh Steinberg, recalled telling him after the game that his life would never be the same now that he was "Troy Aikman, Super Bowl MVP, superstar."

Joe Montana's first of four Super Bowl wins came in 1982 in Super Bowl XVI. He was named MVP in the San Francisco 49ers' 26-21 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, an honor he'd receive twice more in his career.

5. Joe Namath

Russell Wilson led the Seattle Seahawks to their first-ever Super Bowl title in 2014. He threw for more than 200 yards, including two touchdowns, in a dominating 43-8 performance over Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos to win Super Bowl XLVIII.

After the game, Wilson told Fox Sports reporter Pam Oliver, "In the beginning of the season, I told the guys, 'Hey, you know, why not us?' You know, we believed that we could get here; we had the talent, we had the coaching staff, we had the best fans in the National Football League, and we wanted to win it all."

The seven-time Super Bowl champion and five-time Super Bowl MVP had to start somewhere. Brady's first Super Bowl celebration came after the Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams (now known as the LA Rams) 20-17 in 2002's Super Bowl XXXVI.

2. Patrick Mahomes

During the 2019-2020 season, Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1970. He had two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown to help the Chiefs beat the 49ers 31-20, and he became the youngest quarterback ever to win the Super Bowl MVP award.

"I mean, obviously, I've had a good start to my career," Mahomes told reporters at the time.

That win was the first of his three Super Bowl titles with the team so far.

Commanders' success product of change in ownership, NFL legend Champ Bailey says

25 January 2025 at 03:00

The Washington Commanders have been the surprise team of the 2024 season.

Behind rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders earned a wild-card spot in the playoffs and defeated the NFC South division winner in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the best team in the NFC in the Detroit Lions.

SIGN UP FOR TUBI AND STREAM SUPER BOWL LIX FOR FREE

All the Commanders have to do now is top their NFC East rival Philadelphia Eagles to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1991 season.

Champ Bailey, who starred for the organization when they were called the Washington Redskins, told Fox News Digital he’s a big fan of the quarterback, but the team’s recent success started when ownership changed hands.

"(Jayden Daniels) is the real deal. I think you can give him a lot of credit for what that franchise is doing right now, but it all starts at the top," he said. "Once Josh Harris took over the team, and you bring on the ownership team that he has … these dudes, first of all, they love the Commanders because they’re all sort of D.C. guys. And then you have Magic Johnson, who’s the winner of all winners added to that.

COMMANDERS WILL HIT JALEN HURTS 'LIKE A RUNNING BACK' IF EAGLES DEPLOY HIM ON DESIGNED RUNS, COACH SAYS

"So, the culture changes pretty much overnight. And now you draft the right quarterback, which we all know if you can draft the right quarterback, the sky’s the limit for your franchise. The fan base is probably one of the best in the world. I mean, I tell people all the time when I’m out and about, I get just as many Commanders fans come up to me than Broncos fans, and I played in Denver 10 years after I played in Washington. So, it’s been 20 years since I’ve been there and people still remember my career like it happened yesterday."

Harris’ group bought the Commanders from Daniel Snyder in 2023 for more than $6 billion. The team started a little rocky in the first season with Harris and Co. as the owners. Washington was 4-13 in 2023 and were awarded the No. 2 pick in the draft.

Washington selected Daniels, the Heisman Trophy winner in 2023 from LSU, and his poise and collectiveness along with his innate talent at throwing the football helped the Commanders to a 12-6 record and their first playoff appearance since 2020.

"I’m just happy that they have a team that they can be proud of, they can root for," said Bailey, who spoke to Fox News Digital on behalf of Trulieve. "But it all starts with great ownership, great leadership, and now you’re able to insert a great player like Jayden Daniels. Give them a lot of credit. The kid’s talent is amazing – the things he’s doing now. But it all starts at the top."

Tom Brady compares Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels to legendary golfer

23 January 2025 at 05:17

Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels helped break the team’s drought of NFC Championship appearances with a shocking victory over the Detroit Lions last week.

Daniels was 22-of-31 with 299 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He was not sacked in the game, and Washington was 3-for-4 on fourth-down conversion attempts.

The young quarterback’s ability to be poised and under control in high-pressure situations earned him praise from arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady. The former NFL star compared Daniels to Tiger Woods during an episode of the "Let’s Go!" podcast.

"How do we really evaluate confidence? How do we evaluate poise? Because some people have it. The moments aren’t too big for them," Brady said. "They look at the challenge, and they think about, ‘Man, this is gonna be amazing when we go out and beat these guys.’ And the other guys look at the challenge and go, ‘Oh man, I really don’t want to mess up.’ And I think that fear of failure, instilled in a lot of people in early points of their life, keeps them from the ultimate confidence that they have in themselves, which allows them to grow to their maximum potential.

AMON-RA ST. BROWN TO BEN JOHNSON, WHO LEFT LIONS FOR BEARS: ‘WE’RE GOING TO F--- YOU UP’

"So even though Jayden Daniels is just a rookie, he has that poise and confidence. Imagine, I guess, another correlation, look at a young Tiger Woods. He never had proven on the big stage that he was ready for those big moments in the Masters in ’97, but he had proved that to himself in all those junior amateurs that he won, that he didn’t care who he was playing. It was him versus him."

Daniels appeared to maintain the one-game-at-a-time mentality as he talked to reporters about the possibility of going to the Super Bowl with a win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

If the Commanders win the NFC Championship, it will be their first Super Bowl appearance since the 1991 season, when the organization was known as the Washington Redskins. Daniels would also be the first rookie quarterback to lead his team to a Super Bowl.

"I’m not even thinking that far. It would obviously be a blessing, but I’m just focused on how can I be better day by day," he said, via Pro Football Talk.

The Commanders and Eagles play at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday. The game can be seen on FOX.

Commanders kicker doinks game-winning field goal through uprights to beat Buccaneers in Wild Card Round

12 January 2025 at 20:29

This game will forever be known as the "Divisional Doink" for the Washington Commanders, as Zane Gonzalez’s field goal to beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round, 23-20, got a little help from the goal post.

Getting the ball with 4:41 left to play in the fourth quarter after the Bucs tied it with a field goal at 20 apiece, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders’ offense were methodical with their drive, knowing that burning the right amount of clock could end in a game-winning field goal at the buzzer.

There were a few crucial plays on the drive to keep it alive, including Daniels finding Dyami Brown, who scored the game’s first touchdown, for a 21-yard on 3rd-and-6 to continue owning the ball. Then, with 55 seconds left, Daniels was able to run for four yards on third-and-2 from Tampa Bay’s 19-yard line, icing the chance to end the game.

When Gonzalez stepped into that kick from 37 yards out, it started immediately going to the right, and every Bucs fan at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay was hoping it wouldn’t split the uprights. But when it rang off the right goalpost, it went through for the three points and the victory to move on to the Divisional Round.

This is the first playoff win for Washington since 2005, and it came from another gutsy performance by the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Daniels has solidified his role as the team’s franchise quarterback with a tremendous regular season, but he didn’t fold under playoff pressure on the road against a Bucs team that demolished the Philadelphia Eagles on their home turf just a season ago in the same round.

EAGLES HANDLE PACKERS IN WILD CARD ROUND TO MOVE ON IN NFL PLAYOFFS

Daniels, though, was calm and collected, going 24-for-35 for 268 yards with two touchdown passes, including one to Terry McLaurin which came after quite easily the most pivotal moment of the game.

The Bucs’ defense got a fantastic fourth-and-goal stop to turn the Commanders over on downs on their own three yard line. But just four plays later, Baker Mayfield botched what appeared to be a fake handoff to rookie receiver Jalen McMillan. The ball hit McMillan’s arm and went to the floor.

It was the Commanders who recovered on Tampa Bay’s 11-yard line, and Daniels made the Bucs pay with a five-yard pass to McLaurin on fourth-and-2 to take the lead.

The Bucs weren’t able to cash in on another red zone trip on the ensuing drive, opting to kick a game-tying field goal on fourth-and-3 from Washington’s 14-yard line. But they wouldn’t see the ball again thanks to Daniels and his offense.

Mayfield was just 15-for-18 for 185 yards with two touchdowns, while Bucky Irving rushed for 77 yards on 17 carries. Mike Evans had the team’s first touchdown as part of his seven-catch, 92-yard day.

Meanwhile, Brown and McLaurin each had 89 receiving yards on the night.

The Commanders will have a tough task in the Divisional Round, as they will be heading to Detroit to face the No. 1-seeded Lions as their No. 6 seed is lower than the No. 4 Los Angeles Rams and No. 5 Minnesota Vikings, who play the final wild card game on Monday night.

Commanders' Jayden Daniels bleeds after suffering gash below eye vs Bucs

12 January 2025 at 18:24

Washington Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels was cut and bloodied in the second quarter of his playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The Commanders called a timeout with 11:16 left in the half. The NBC broadcast showed a cut below the quarterback’s right eye. Blood streaked down his face as the team’s medical staff tried to get him cleaned up.

Daniels came back out for 3rd-and-3 and was able to find wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus for a first down. Three plays later, Daniels put Washington on top with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dyami Brown. Washington took a 7-3 lead with 9:26 left in the quarter.

He was treated on the sidelines after the touchdown drive.

EAGLES' AJ BROWN READS BOOK ON SIDELINE DURING TEAM'S PLAYOFF WIN

It was Daniels’ first playoff game of his career, and he appeared to be as cool and as poised as he’s been all season long.

Washington hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2005 season. That game was also against the Buccaneers. Mark Brunell led Washington to a 17-10 win over Chris Simms and the Buccaneers. Clinton Portis had a rushing touchdown and the late Sean Taylor had a 51-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

It’s the Commanders’ first playoff appearance since 2020. They won the NFC East that season with a 7-9 record.

NBC omits 'Redskins' from ex-star QB's jersey as Jayden Daniels sets franchise mark, draws fan backlash

30 December 2024 at 10:15

NBC’s "Sunday Night Football" broadcast came under fire as Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels broke the franchise’s rookie rushing record against the Atlanta Falcons.

Daniels ran for 127 yards in the 30-24 overtime victory. He has 864 rushing yards on the season to go along with six touchdowns. Robert Griffin III held the record with 815 yards during the 2012 season. The Commanders were known as the Washington Redskins then.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

As a graphic showing Daniels and Griffin’s rookie season appeared, the former Baylor standout appeared on the screen without "Redskins" emblazoned across his chest. The team had the name underneath the NFL logo on their red jerseys that season.

NBC didn’t immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

PAT MCAFEE TORCHES COLTS FOLLOWING BAD LOSS TO GIANTS, ELIMINATION FROM PLAYOFF HUNT

Griffin was a Pro Bowler and the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. He guided the team to the playoffs. Daniels is seemingly on the same trajectory. He’s gotten the Commanders back to the postseason and has been the best quarterback to come out of the 2024 class so far.

The Redskins name has been a source of controversy for years. Former team owner Daniel Snyder ditched it in 2020. The franchise was known as the Washington Football Team and then the Commanders.

Recently, the new Commanders ownership led by Josh Harris has worked with federal lawmakers to revive the old logo in some capacity.

Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., said on Fox News Channel’s "America Reports" last month that he backed a bill that would allow the franchise to use the RFK Stadum site as the team’s home in the future amid "good faith negotiations" that the league and the franchise would honor the Blackfeet chief logo that the organization used for decades.

Jayden Daniels orchestrates game-winning drive in overtime to send Commanders to playoffs

29 December 2024 at 22:05

A Sunday night overtime thriller unfolded in the nation’s capital, and playoff implications were riddled throughout the battle between the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders.

While this one came down to the wire, the Commanders were victorious with a 30-24 win over the Falcons to earn their spot in the postseason.

The Commanders improved to 11-5 on the year, giving them a playoff spot as a wild card team.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Meanwhile, the Falcons head into Week 18 needing a win and a Buccaneers loss to secure the NFC South – their only chance at reaching the playoffs as other teams hold better records.

As noted, extra time was needed for this contest, but the reason behind it was a true rookie moment for Michael Penix Jr., the Falcons’ eighth overall pick who went up against the Commanders’ No. 2 overall pick in Jayden Daniels.

All season long, Daniels cemented himself as an Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner, making tremendous plays to put Washington in the position to reach the playoffs.

JIMMY CARTER, FORMER US PRESIDENT, REMEMBERED IN SPORTS WORLD AFTER DEATH

But Penix, in the second start of his young career, found himself down a touchdown with less than five minutes to play in the fourth quarter and a playoff spot on the line.

Penix capped a surgical drive on fourth-and-goal with a 13-yard strike in between multiple Commanders defenders to find tight end Kyle Pitts, which tied the game after the extra point went through the uprights.

After a three-and-out by Daniels and the Commanders’ offense, who had a chance at a game-winning drive, Penix and the Falcons had just over one minute to try to get into field goal range for Riley Patterson.

They came very close after Penix found Darnell Mooney for a 25-yard pickup that got them near midfield. However, on third-and-5 from the Atlanta 49-yard line, a pass from Penix to Mooney resulted in defensive pass interference, which allowed Patterson to at least try a 56-yarder for the win.

The ensuing kick was on line, but it didn’t have enough leg as it landed in the back of the end zone to force overtime.

But as Penix had his rookie moment, Daniels added yet another game-winning drive to his resume after winning the coin flip and keeping the ball from Atlanta.

Just as Daniels did against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, he drove downfield in 12 plays using his arms and legs, killing 7:18 of overtime clock to eventually find himself third-and-goal from the Atlanta two-yard line.

Daniels dropped back to pass and lasered the ball to Zach Ertz, his trusty tight end, whose second touchdown of the night was the game-winner.

Daniels finished the game with 227 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception, while rushing for a game-high 127 yards on 16 carries.

Olamide Zaccheaus was the first touchdown scorer for Washington, and he led the team with 85 yards on eight receptions. Ertz finished with 72 yards on six catches.

For the Falcons, Penix ended the night 19-for-35 for 223 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Drake London was the game’s top receiver with 106 yards on seven catches.

Bijan Robinson also had 90 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns.

Jayden Daniels throws 5 touchdown passes as Commanders storm back to stun Eagles

22 December 2024 at 13:58

The Washington Commanders never lost hope and were able to dig out from five turnovers to turn around and stun the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, 36-33.

Jayden Daniels had five touchdown passes in the game, three of which came in the fourth quarter. The Commanders were down 27-14 as the final quarter started. He threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus to inch the team closer.

The Commanders forced the Eagles to punt on their next drive. Daniels then found Zaccheaus for a 49-yard touchdown pass to take the lead. For another six minutes, Washington was in control but back-to-back field goals from Eagles kicker Jake Elliott gave Philadelphia a lead with under two minutes to go.

Daniels then led Washington down the field on nine plays and found wide receiver Jamison Crowder with enough space in the end zone to make the go-ahead grab with six seconds left in the game. The Commanders took the three-point lead and they won the game.

Daniels was 24-of-39 with 258 passing yards. Along with his five touchdown passes, he also threw two interceptions.

TEXANS’ CJ STROUD TURNS TO FAITH FOLLOWING TANK DELL’S DEVASTATING LEG INJURY: ‘ALL YOU CAN DO IS REALLY PRAY’

Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. had two fumbles lost and wide receiver Dyami Brown had one, contributing to the large turnover number.

But Washington ultimately benefited from Philadelphia losing quarterback Jalen Hurts in the first quarter due to a concussion. Kenny Pickett subbed in for him and had 143 passing yards, a touchdown pass, an interception and three sacks.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley had 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns. But the Eagles’ offense looked a bit anemic after scoring 21 points in the first quarter.

A.J. Brown led the team with eight catches for 97 yards and a touchdown.

Washington improved to 10-5. It’s their first 10-win season since 2012. The Eagles fell to 12-3.

Commanders, Titans players get into heated kerfuffle amid early domination

1 December 2024 at 11:09

The Washington Commanders were, well, in command early in their Week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, going up 21-0 in the first quarter.

Following one point-after kick, Commanders and Titans players had to be separated as tensions climbed. Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons and Commanders offensive lineman Sam Cosmi appeared to be the two players mostly involved in the brouhaha.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"Now we have shades of Michigan and Ohio State," CBS broadcaster Andrew Carlton said, referencing the incident that occurred after Saturday’s game between the two rivals.

Washington already was up 21-0 in the game through the first quarter.

Jayden Daniels’ touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin made it so. Daniels and Brian Robinson Jr. each had a rushing touchdown in the game as well.

RAVENS STAR ADMITS 'TALL TASK' STOPPING SAQUON BARKLEY THIS WEEK, BUT DERRICK HENRY COULD BE THE SOLUTION

Washington scored in the second quarter on a second Daniels-to-McLaurin touchdown pass.

The Commanders hoped to keep pace with the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East lead. Washington lost against the Dallas Cowboys last week in a shootout at home. They entered the game against the Titans on a three-game losing streak.

Tennessee has had a rough season, and it’s looking like a high draft pick for the organization by the time this season ends.

The Titans have won two out of their last seven and have three wins overall. They upset the Houston Texans last week to snap a two-game losing streak.

Cowboys score 24 points in 4th quarter for narrow victory over Commanders in bizarre game

24 November 2024 at 13:56

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Washington Commanders, 34-26, on Sunday in their Week 12 NFC East battle. And that’s probably the easiest way to describe what occurred in the game

The score was 3-3 at halftime and Dallas took a 10-9 lead with 4:40 left in the third quarter when Cooper Rush found Jalen Tolbert for a 6-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was going to be a defensive battle with no real scoring going on for either team.

Then, the fourth quarter happened.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

The Cowboys took a 20-9 lead over the Commanders after Rush found tight end Luke Schoonmaker for a 22-yard touchdown. It seemed like it was enough for the Cowboys to close out the game as there was only 5:16 left.

Jayden Daniels sparked a roaring comeback. He found Zach Ertz for a 4-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to three.

Dallas struck back with a special teams play. Austin Seibert kicked the ball down the field. Returner KaVontae Turpin fumbled the ball initially, picked it up, made a spin move and then was gone. He galloped 99 yards for the score and the Cowboys had a 10-point lead.

The Commanders drove down the field in six plays to set up Seibert for a 51-yard field goal. Dallas went three-and-out on its next possession. But inexplicably made a bad mistake on defense.

Daniels found wide receiver Terry McLaurin and the veteran found space around Cowboys defenders and took the ball into the end zone. One play, 86 yards. Washington could have tied the game but Seibert missed the point-after attempt. The Commanders were down 27-26.

Seibert tried the onside kick to recover it, but the ball bounced to Dallas player Juanyeh Thomas, who for some reason returned the ball 43 yards for a touchdown. It gave the Commanders one final drive. It would have been an even bigger calamity if Daniels found similar magic as he did against the Chicago Bears.

AARON RODGERS HAS RESISTED INJURY SCANS TO AVOID BEING BENCHED: REPORT

Luckily, for the Cowboys, Daniels’ Hail Mary attempt was batted down and the Cowboys picked up the win.

The two teams combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter.

Rush was solid enough to get the win for the Cowboys. He was 24-of-32 with 247 passing yards and two touchdown passes. Schoonmaker had three catches for 55 yards. Tolbert had two catches for 22 yards.

CeeDee Lamb led Dallas with 10 catches for 67 yards.

The Commanders had three turnovers. Daniels had two interceptions – one to Chauncey Golston and the other to Israel Mukuamu. Commanders tight end John Bates also fumbled.

The rookie quarterback was 25-of-38 with 275 yards and two touchdown passes. He also led the team with 74 rushing yards and had a rushing touchdown.

McLaurin had five catches for 102 yards.

Dallas improved to 4-7 on the season and Washington fell to 7-5.
