Sam Darnold's remarkable TD pass to Justin Jefferson helps Vikings edge Seahawks

22 December 2024 at 16:48

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold was able to do enough to help the team eke out a victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, 27-24.

It was a game both teams needed to win to keep pace in their respective division title races. Minnesota needed to match the Detroit Lions after they won earlier in the day and Seattle needed to win to match the Los Angeles Rams after they also won earlier in the day.

It was the Vikings’ game.

Seahawks veteran quarterback Geno Smith found A.J. Barner for a 4-yard touchdown pass to take the lead with 4:21 left. It was an 11-play drive that lasted more than six minutes.

Darnold responded. In just four plays, Darnold somehow found Justin Jefferson with two Seahawks defenders around him and snuck the ball through the tightest of windows. Jefferson caught it and ran into the end zone for a touchdown.

The 39-yard touchdown pass put the Vikings back up three points.

Seattle had a chance to tie the game. Jason Myers received an opportunity to give Seattle three points late with a 60-yard field goal try. But he was just a few yards short of making it and the Seahawks lost.

Darnold was 22-of-35 with 246 passing yards and three touchdown passes. Jefferson had two of those three touchdown passes and Jordan Addison had the other. Jefferson finished with 10 catches for 144 yards and Addison had five catches for 35 yards.

Smith was as remarkable as he could be. He finished 31-of-43 passing for 314 yards and three touchdown passes. Jaxon Smith-Njigba and DK Metcalf had the other touchdown passes.

Minnesota improved to 13-2 on the season. Seattle fell to 8-7.

Packers handle Seahawks to maintain playoff spot; Geno Smith leaves game with knee injury

16 December 2024 at 03:30

The Green Bay Packers picked up a crucial win over the Seattle Seahawks, 30-13, to help their playoff chances on Sunday night.

The Packers moved to 10-4 on the year, maintaining their spot in the wild card race.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks fell out of first place in the NFC West, as their 8-6 record allows the Los Angeles Rams to move ahead of them due to the current tiebreaker.

Things got off to a hot start for the Packers, who came off a tough loss to their divisional foe, the Detroit Lions, last week.

It was star running back Josh Jacobs finding some huge holes his offensive line created in the Seahawks’ defense that allowed him to tally 42 total yards to ultimately get a one-yard touchdown run into the end zone for the quick 7-0 lead.

Then, Packers quarterback Jordan Love threw a quick pass on the next drive to Romeo Doubs, who fought his way for the 13-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile, Geno Smith was not finding the same success with his offense, as they only totaled three points in the first half.

It included a red zone interception from Smith on third-and-9 on Green Bay’s 14-yard line, as he was looking for tight end Noah Fant, but Carrington Valentine jumped the route to pick him off.

However, the second half saw a Seattle defense that stymied the Packers’ solid run game, and that ultimately led to a number of three-and-outs to give the Seahawks a chance to get back into the game.

Then, Smith was injured after trying to make a pass midway through the third quarter, and slamming his helmet on the sideline showed that he was clearly injured.

Sam Howell, the Washington Commanders’ quarterback from 2023, took his place under center, and he took over the rest of the way as Smith was ruled out with a knee injury.

The Seahawks were able to find the end zone in the fourth quarter, as Zach Charbonnet, taking over the starting role again for an injured Kenneth Walker III, got the right blocks and sprinted 24 yards to make it a 23-13 game.

It was too little, too late though, as the Packers held off Howell to come away with the victory.

The nail in the coffin was Doubs’ second touchdown catch of the game, and it was a terrific one as he picked it off the turf in the back of the end zone to make it count for six.

Looking at the stat sheet, Love finished the game 20-of-27 for 229 yards with his two touchdowns, while Jacobs had 94 rushing yards on 26 carries and 42 yards through the air on four catches with his rushing score to open the game.

For the Seahawks, Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 10 catches for 83 yards to lead the team, though the Seahawks only generated 80 yards on the ground.

"@NFLOfficiating you F-----G suck, yall should be ashamed of yall selves.!" Reed wrote in a post.

Reed was called for holding early in the first quarter against the Seahawks. The Jets were penalized 12 times for 83 yards in the game. Two of the penalties came on a crucial drive for the Seahawks.

Seattle running back Zach Charbonnet ran for the go-ahead 8-yard touchdown with 5:34 left in the game. But the drive was extended twice as Jets players Qwan'tez Stiggers and Solomon Thomas were called for penalties on 4th downs that gave Seattle new sets of downs.

It was a tough day for the Jets as they led 21-7 early in the second quarter. But crucial turnovers and lack of offense in the second half doomed them to defeat.

Reed played in the 10th game of the 2024 season on Sunday. Coming into the contest, he had recorded 37 tackles and eight pass breakups along with one sack. He had seven tackles and a pass breakup against the Seahawks.

Reed is likely to get a fine for criticizing the officials. Pro Football Talk noted that Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett was hit with a $25,000 fine for calling officiating a "travesty" last year after a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Seahawks stars Geno Smith, Leonard Williams burn former team; Seattle extends winning streak

1 December 2024 at 13:57

Smith was a second-round pick of the Jets in 2013. He played with them from 2013 to 2016 before he parted ways with them and eventually found himself with the Seahawks. Williams was with the Jets from 2015 to the middle of the 2019 season, when he was traded to the New York Giants. He was traded to the Seahawks last season.

Smith had 206 passing yards and one touchdown pass, and Williams had two sacks and an interception returned 92 yards for a touchdown. Seattle won the game 26-21.

New York had a 21-7 lead in the second quarter when Aaron Rodgers’ pass landed in the hands of Williams with about 7:39 to go in the first half. It sparked the epic comeback.

Smith led the Seahawks on a nine-play, 71-yard drive that ended with a Zach Charbonnet 8-yard touchdown run. Seattle was able to get new sets of downs thanks to two Jets penalties on fourth down. They eventually burned them for it.

Seattle’s defense clamped down on the Jets’ offense in the second half. Seattle had a ton of special teams miscues in the first half that helped the Jets take advantage early.

An early fumble on a kickoff led to a Jets touchdown and then Kene Nwangwu returned a kick 99 yards for a score.

Rodgers was 21-of-39 with 185 yards and two touchdown passes. Davante Adams and Isaiah Davis each had touchdown catches.

The Seahawks moved to 7-5 on the season and are on a three-game winning streak.

New York fell to 3-9 on the season.
