Tigers' Tarik Skubal pitches incredible game in win over Guardians: 'Sky is the limit'

Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal asserted himself as one of Major League Baseball’s best pitchers on Sunday with a dominant performance in a win over the Cleveland Guardians.

Skubal completed what is known in the majors as the "Maddux" – a nod to Baseball Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. To attain the feat, a pitcher must throw a shutout in at least nine innings with fewer than 100 pitches thrown. The statistic was created in 2012.

The Tigers pitcher lasted all nine innings, allowed two hits and struck out 13 batters. He threw 94 pitches. Detroit won the game 5-0 as the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner completed the first complete game of his career.

"I don’t know what to say because you don’t see it very often," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. "When he’s got full intensity and full throttle, the sky is the limit."

He became the only major league player to throw a shutout with 13 or more strikeouts and fewer than 100 pitchers since pitches started to be tracked in 1988, according to Sportsradar. He is also the first Tigers player to have at least 10 strikeouts in four straight home games.

Skubal admitted to tearing up before he stepped out toward the mound for the ninth inning. He heard the roar of the crowd at Comerica Park.

"Little teary-eyed out there, honestly, before the inning started," Skubal said. "It was pretty cool. I just thought to myself, `12-year-old me wouldn't believe that was an opportunity to have the fan base support you the way it does and be in that moment.'

"It was pretty special."

He has a 2.49 ERA and 92 strikeouts this season.

Red Sox outfielders combine to make miraculous catch

Boston Red Sox outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela combined for the rare 9-8 putout in the team’s 6-5 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday at Comerica Park.

With the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tigers designated hitter Kerry Carpenter crushed a high fastball off of Liam Hendriks deep to right-center field.

Abreu, the Red Sox's right fielder, tracked the ball as he moved back to the wall. Abreu leaped and got his glove on it, but could not haul it in, and the ball bounced off his glove back into the field of play as it was set to go over the wall for a go-ahead home run for Carpenter.

Rafaela, the Red Sox's center fielder, ran over to back up Abreu, and the ball caromed off of Abreu’s glove and right to Rafaela.

Rafaela reacted and grabbed the ball with his bare hand and then put it into his glove for the out.

Upon the catch, Rafaela hoisted the glove above his head and showed the ball while Abreu celebrated the improbable play by high-fiving Rafaela.

Hendriks lifted his arms up in disbelief, as the Red Sox outfielders not only brought a home run back into play but turned it into an out.

D'BACKS MANAGER TOREY LOVULLO 'THROWS OUT' UMPIRES IN EPIC TIRADE AFTER HIS OWN EJECTION

The last 9-8 putout before the Red Sox on Wednesday was on Sept. 14, 2003, when the Minnesota Twins’ Michael Ryan lost the ball in the sun, and it hit off his head and Dustan Mohr caught it.

While the Tigers were kept off the scoreboard in the seventh inning by the miraculous play by Abreu and Rafaela, they were not denied in the ninth inning.

Red Sox reliever Aroldis Chapman walked the lead-off hitter Andy Ibanez, who then stole second base. Tigers’ manager AJ Hinch then sent Justyn-Henry Malloy to pinch hit, and he delivered.

Malloy lined a single to center field and gave the Tigers their second straight walk-off win over the Red Sox.

The Tigers’ walk-off win on Wednesday completed a three-game sweep over the Red Sox. They will look to continue their winning ways when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday at 7:07 p.m. ET.

The Red Sox will look to turn things around when they take on the Atlanta Braves on Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET on Friday.

Chet Lemon, World Series champion with Tigers, dies at 70

The Detroit Tigers lost one of their beloved stars Thursday when Chet Lemon died at the age of 70.

Lemon, an outfielder, won the World Series with the famed 1984 Tigers team.

Lemon spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Chicago White Sox, earning back-to-back All-Star nods in 1978 and 1979 and leading the American League with 44 doubles in the latter season.

Ahead of the 1982 season, the Sox traded him to the Tigers, and the move looked like an early win for Chicago. Lemon's batting average dipped from .302 to .266. The following season, he hit .255.

But he had a resurgence in 1984, raising his average to .287 with a .495 slugging percentage, the second-best of his career. He earned his third and final All-Star nod that season.

In the '84 World Series, Lemon hit .294 in five games. He and his teammates were honored at Comerica Park in September to commemorate the 40th anniversary of that title.

"While he was a World Series champion and All-Star on the field, perhaps his biggest impact came off of it. That includes creating the Chet Lemon Foundation and dedicating much of his post-playing career to youth baseball development," the Tigers said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with Chet’s family, friends and all those he coached, mentored and inspired."

"Chet was a cherished teammate and friend," former teammate and Hall of Famer Alan Trammell said in a statement of his own. "I'm so thankful for the time we spent together last summer when the 1984 team had its 40th reunion at Comerica Park. Today is a sad day for us. He will be dearly missed."

Lemon also led the league in being hit by pitches four times.

A blood disorder in 1990 played a role in Lemon's career being cut short after 16 seasons. A year later, he was in intensive care due to a blood clot. Over the years, he had numerous health issues, including a series of strokes. He had been living in Florida at the time of his death.

Tigers' Riley Greene becomes first player in MLB history to hit two ninth-inning home runs in same game

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene made history during the Tigers' 9-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.

Greene, 24, became the first player in MLB history to hit two home runs in the ninth inning.

Greene’s first ninth-inning blast broke a 1-1 tie, as Kenley Jansen’s cutter was right down Broadway, and the Tigers’ star didn’t miss it. Greene’s 371-foot blast just got over the wall in right field to give the Tigers a 2-1 ninth-inning lead.

Colt Keith followed Greene’s lead as he hit a home run of his own to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead. The Tigers’ home run party continued with Javier Baez’s two-run blast to put them up 5-1.

The Tigers didn’t stop there, as they continued to hit and brought Greene back up to the plate for the second time in the inning with a 6-1 lead.

However, Greene faced a different pitcher in his second at-bat of the inning as Jake Eder replaced the struggling Jansen on the mound for the Angels.

The pitching change didn’t matter for Greene, as the result was the same: another home run.

Greene crushed Eder’s hanging sweeper 409 feet into the right-centerfield seats for a three-run home run to give the Tigers a 9-1 lead and etched himself into the history books, although Greene was not immediately aware he made history.

"Yeah, I just found that out — pretty cool," Greene said postgame. "But the game is over. We got to show up tomorrow and try to win another baseball game."

Greene became the first Tigers player to hit two homers in an inning since Magglio Ordonez against the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 12, 2007. The only other Tigers player to homer twice in an inning was Hall-of-Famer Al Kaline, against the Kansas City A’s on April 17, 1955.

On the season, Greene has a .262 batting average with six home runs and 16 RBI in 31 games played.

The American League-best Tigers (21-12) will play the struggling Angels (12-19) again on Saturday at 9:38 p.m. ET.

Jackson Jobe, one of the Detroit Tigers’ top prospects and son of a Masters golfer, picked up the first major league win of his career on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins.

Jobe is the son of Brandt Jobe, who appeared in three Masters competitions and finished tied for 14th in 1999.

He explained his gameplan to reporters as he didn’t have a ton of strikeouts on the day.

"I just haven’t been throwing my curveball for strikes, so there was a big emphasis on that going into today’s outing," he said, via MLB.com. "I’ve been wanting to throw it a little bit more, but [catcher Tomás] Nido is not going to call it if I’m not throwing it for strikes. I feel like it took a pretty big step today."

The win came amid Masters weekend at Augusta National in Georgia and fond memories of his father competing in the tournament.

ESPN noted that Jobe caddied for his father during the Par 3 Contest in 2006.

Brandt Jobe had 16 professional wins during his career. Six came on the PGA of Japan Tour. The highest he was ever ranked was 30th in 1998.

He was the 1990 Canadian Tour Order of Merit winner and the 1995 Asia Golf Circuit Order of Merit winner.

As for the Tigers, they are on top of the American League Central division with a 9-5 record.

Yankees' Cody Bellinger misses Tigers game possibly due to food poisoning, manager says

New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger did not start in the team’s game against the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday due to food poisoning.

Bellinger, 29, ate some chicken wings last night and threw up all night, according to Yankees manager Aaron Boone. As of now, Boone said no one else on the team is sick.

"Hopefully (he’s) feeling a little bit better now, and we’ll see if we can get him going, make him somehow available as the game goes," Boone said via the New York Post

With Bellinger out of the lineup on Tuesday, he has missed three of the last five games. The outfielder missed two games against the Pittsburgh Pirates due a stiff back.

He returned to the lineup on Sunday and played in the Yankees' 6-2 loss to the Tigers on Monday.

The Yankees acquired Bellinger in a trade with the Chicago Cubs this offseason to help replace Juan Soto, after Soto departed in free agency for the New York Mets.

In eight games this season, Bellinger has a .233 average with one home run and six RBI while playing in left field, center field, and right field.

Center fielder Trent Grisham took over Bellinger’s spot in the starting lineup on Tuesday. Grisham is off to a scalding start this season, hitting .423 with three home runs and nine RBI in nine games.

The Yankees entered Tuesday’s game against the Tigers with a 6-4 record, and they are atop the AL East.

Carlos Carrasco was the Yankees' starting pitcher, while 2024 AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal started for the Tigers.

Former Tigers exec Sam Menzin's resignation centers around lewd photos sent to female employees: report

Sam Menzin is the former assistant general manager of the Detroit Tigers after resigning this past Thursday, and now there may be a reason why that happened.

Menzin resigned before the team could fire him due to unsolicited photos of his genitals being sent to former female employees of the team, The Athletic reported.

The Tigers did not specify why Menzin resigned from his post.

Two former female employees told The Athletic that Menzin sent the images to them via Snapchat, the social media picture and video app, which allows auto-deleted messages. He did so several times, dating back to 2017.

Menzin had told the outlet he was going back to New York to handle "some family issues," while also mentioning he was looking for a career change.

ROB MANFRED SAYS MLB ISN'T READY FOR SALARY CAP, GOLDEN AT-BAT RULE ANYTIME SOON

The Tigers released a statement via the as part of the report.

"Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin’s conduct, the club promptly completed an investigation," the Tigers said in the statement. "Before the club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned. This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism."

Additionally, another woman who worked for MLB – not the Tigers – told The Athletic Menzin had also sent her unsolicited messages of his genitals on Snapchat between 2018 and 2019.

Given the timeframe of the alleged messages, one woman commented on why she spoke out now about Menzin.

"It’s like no one says anything because who is going to believe them when they say Sam Menzin did this?" the woman said. "It’s not like a bat boy or security guard. It’s Sam Menzin."

The woman added that, because there were so few women working in the Tigers’ front office, "it always felt like saying something wasn’t an option, because who is going to believe you and do anything about it?"

Menzin had been with the Tigers for 13 years, starting as a baseball operations intern in 2012 and working up the ranks to a strong executive position he was in. He also interned with the New York Mets and Turner-Gary Sports.

Mezin has not commented on the allegations.

Chris Sale, Tarik Skubal earn first career Cy Young Awards

20 November 2024 at 16:11

Tarik Skubal and Chris Sale, both of whom won the pitching Triple Crown (wins, ERA, strikeouts) in their respective leagues, were named the American League and National League Cy Young Award winners Wednesday.

It was the first time each of them won the award.

Skubal pitched to a 2.39 ERA, and his 228 strikeouts and 18 wins (tied with Sale) were tops in all of baseball. He received all 30 first-place votes in the American League, winning the award unanimously on his 28th birthday. Seth Lugo of the Royals finished second, while Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, who had a 0.61 ERA, finished in third.

It was not that long ago Skubal was a middling arm. In 2021, he had a 4.34 ERA in 31 appearances.

Last season, in 15 starts, he showed his potential with a 2.80 ERA. This year, though, he put it all together to become the ace of a squad that rallied late to clinch a postseason berth.

YANKEES' HAL STEINBRENNER UNDERSTANDS PRESSURE FROM FANS TO LAND JUAN SOTO: 'I'VE GOT EARS'

For Sale, it was a resurgent year after he had made just 31 starts from 2020 to 2023 after several years of dominance. The 35-year-old took the hill 29 times last season and dominated with MLB bests in ERA (2.38) and K/9 (11.4), along with 225 strikeouts.

Sale received 26 first-place votes, while the Phillies' Zack Wheeler, who finished in second, received the other four. NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes finished in third. From 2012 to 2018, Sale finished no worse than sixth place in the Cy Young voting, and this marks the first time he won the award.

Sale had already been named the NL’s Comeback Player of the Year and was named to the All-MLB first team. The Atlanta Braves acquired the lefty and cash from the Boston Red Sox before the 2024 season for Vaughn Grissom, who hit .190 in 31 games this season. Turns out, it was a decent trade for Atlanta.

The MLB awards will wrap up Thursday, when Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani are expected to be named the AL and NL MVPs after combining for 112 home runs and 274 RBIs.
