Colorado Rockies make MLB history with worst 50-game start in modern era

After being swept in a four-game series by the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday, the Colorado Rockies fell to 8-42 on the season.

The Rockies' horrendous start to the season is the worst 50-game start in the modern MLB era

In their 2-0 loss on Thursday, Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez pitched into the seventh inning. It was the Rockies' seventh shutout loss this season.

On the season, the Rockies are just 5-20 at home this season.

Last season, the Chicago White Sox set the modern record for most losses in modern MLB history, as they went 41-121. This year’s Rockies team is on pace to be even worse, as they are on pace to lose 136 games.

After Thursday’s games, the Rockies are 23 games behind the vaunted Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

ORIOLES STAR WOULD PUT PETE ROSE IN HALL OF FAME, BUT 'I GET BOTH SIDES'

They are on pace to finish 74 games out of first place and 58 games to finish fourth place in the NL West, according to ESPN. Both of those deficits would set the all-time record for most games out of first place with ease.

While the Rockies continue to stumble, the Phillies have surged as they have won seven in a row and been especially good on the road, as they have won 11 of their 12 road games.

Their current run has taken the Phillies to the top of the NL East, as they have passed the scuffling New York Mets for the top spot.

The Phillies (32-18) will try to up their winning ways when they play the Athletics (22-29) on Friday at 10:05 p.m. ET. The Rockies (8-42) will try to turn things around when they take on the American League East-leading New York Yankees on Friday at 8:40 p.m. ET.

"Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable," Rockies team owner Dick Monfort said in a statement. "Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better. While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary.

"We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation to we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies Baseball."

ASTROS PITCHER LANCE MCCULLERS JR SAYS FANS WERE 'THREATENING TO FIND MY KIDS AND MURDER THEM' AFTER BAD START

Colorado suffered an embarrassing 21-0 loss to the San Diego Padres. The team got one back on Sunday, 9-3. It was only their seventh win of the season in 40 games. Opposing teams have had a field day against the Rockies. The team’s run differential is -128. Colorado has only scored 133 runs this season.

The Rockies have not made the playoffs since the 2018 season. It was also the last time the team finished over .500. Colorado was 61-101 last season after going 59-103 in 2023.

Black took over as manager in 2017. He was 544-690 in more than eight years at the helm.

The Rockies were the second team to fire their manager within the last seven days. The Pirates fired Derek Shelton earlier in the week.

MLB fans react to Rockies' 21-0 loss to Padres: 'Sell the team'

The Colorado Rockies’ abysmal start to their 2025 campaign hit a new low on Saturday, as they fell to the San Diego Padres, 21-0, at Coors Field, marking the team’s worst shutout loss in franchise history.

As the Padres poured it on, MLB fans couldn’t believe what they were watching, and their voices were heard on social media

The on-field product has been atrocious all year, as their 6-33 record is by far the worst in MLB. But a football score was on the board at Coors Field, and the Rockies fans in the stands, who were vastly outnumbered by Padres supporters, were chanting for change.

"The Rockies are losing 19-0 at the bottom of the fifth," one X user posted. "The crowd is chanting, ‘Sell the Team, Sell the Team.’"

It’s not the first time Rockies owner Dick Monfort has heard chants to sell his team, as they haven’t had a winning record since 2018, losing over 100 games in each of the last two seasons.

Longtime Denver Gazette columnist Woody Paige gave his take after watching Saturday’s game.

MLB ROUNDTABLE: ARE THERE ANY GOOD TEAMS IN THE AL WEST? ARE THE GIANTS LEGIT?

"Delusional Dick Monfort said before season in rare form Rockies could have the best defense in history of baseball," Paige wrote on X. "Roxhead was just a bit outside. Rockies lead MLB in errors and are last in fielding percentage. Go back to Greeley, Dick, and take the stink with you."

A young kid held up a sign in the stands that read, "My arm is rested if needed!" showing how desperate fans are to see a good product.

"Send the Rockies to Triple-A," another X user posted.

"Leagues should step in and take teams from inept ownership, McCourt style," another wrote. "Rockies ownership is just not worthy of having that team anymore. The [Nolan] Arenado trade was the absolute end."

On the other hand, some noticed that there were still a lot of fans in the stands despite the horrendous deficit. Just look at the crowd when Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. smacked a three-run homer to make it 19-0.

One fan gave a perspective on why Monfort would never sell.

"It’s 20-0 #Padres in the sixth inning and fans are doing the wave having the time of their lives," an X user posted. "This is why the Monforts won’t sell the #Rockies. Fans don’t care. Good weather, beer, etc. Pathetic for a true baseball fan."

One of those true baseball fans urged Rockies supporters to stop going to games after watching last night.

"As a Colorado native it is absolutely embarrassing that people still go to the games then complain how bad they are," he wrote. "…YOU ARE THE REASON THE MONFORTS WONT SELL. STOP ATTENDING AND GIVING THEM MONEY."

In the end, at least the Rockies’ social media team is trying to find a way to make light of the situation.

The MLB record for most losses in a single year – 121 – was set by the Chicago White Sox in 2024.

The Rockies appear headed to rivaling that woeful record.

18 November 2024 at 14:56

Colorado Rockies star third baseman Kris Bryant was reportedly among many who had their cars stolen by a car theft ring, but after a multistate investigation, it has since been recovered.

Bryant’s 2023 Lamborghini Huracan was stolen from his Cherry Hills Village residence on Oct. 2, Cherry Hills Village Police Department tells FOX31 Denver.

Bryant was reportedly trying to ship his vehicle to Las Vegas for the offseason. However, when the car failed to arrive at his residence there, an investigation began.

According to FOX31 Denver, detectives found that the vehicle transport company that was supposed to bring his Lamborghini to Las Vegas was a fraud.

It was a business email compromise, which allowed suspects to arrange unauthorized vehicle transports.

On Oct. 7, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s VIPER Auto Theft Team and Homeland Security Investigations successfully recovered Bryant’s vehicle while arresting multiple suspects in the process.

The investigation found that two other vehicles were stolen as well as multiple fraudulent VIN packages, key fobs, fake registration papers and more. One of the stolen vehicles other than Bryant’s came from California.

"This case underscores the Cherry Hills Village Police Department’s commitment to protecting the community from sophisticated criminal schemes," Chief Jason Lyons said, per FOX31 Denver. "Through the diligent work of CHVPD’s Crime Analyst, Detectives, Officers and collaborative partnerships with national and local agencies, stolen property was returned to its rightful owner, and suspects were brought to justice."

Bryant grew up in Las Vegas and usually spends his offseasons there. The 32-year-old has been with the Rockies for the past three seasons.

Bryant, a four-time All-Star during his time with the Chicago Cubs, came up to the big leagues in blazing fashion, winning Rookie of the Year in 2015 after hitting .275/.369/.488 with 26 homers and 99 RBI over 151 games.

Then the 2016 season was one Cubs fans will never forget as Bryant helped lead the way to a World Series victory, the franchise’s first since 1908, snapping a century-long curse.

Bryant won NL MVP that season, slashing .292/.385/.554 with 39 homers and 102 RBI over 155 games.

Bryant was eventually traded to the San Francisco Giants during the 2021 season before ultimately signing before the 2022 campaign with the Rockies for $182 million over seven years.

For his career, Bryant has hit .274/.370/.485 with 184 homers and 547 RBI over 1,043 career games.
