  • The "You've Got Mail" cast has been in many projects since the rom-com premiered 26 years ago.
  • Tom Hanks has since held roles in films like "Elvis" (2022) and "A Man Called Otto" (2022).
  • Meg Ryan has starred in a range of films and made her directorial debut in 2015 with "Ithaca."

"You've Got Mail" may have premiered over 25 years ago, but it's still a favorite movie among fans of rom-coms and 90s classics.

The film, which was directed by Nora Ephron, starred Meg Ryan as a struggling bookseller who develops an online friendship-turned-romance with an anonymous internet user. Unbeknownst to her, she's actually messaging her nemesis, the owner of a chain bookstore, played by Tom Hanks.

Here's what the "You've Got Mail" cast has been up to since the movie hit theaters in 1998.

Hanks starred as Joe Fox, a New York businessman who opens a chain bookstore.

In "You've Got Mail," Hanks' character, Joe, is a third-generation businessman who opens a commercial chain bookstore called Fox Books on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

By the time Hanks — one of America's favorite actors — landed the part, he had been appearing in movies and TV for nearly 20 years, beginning with roles in sitcoms like ABC's "Bosom Buddies" and NBC's "Family Ties."

In the 1990s, Hanks impressively earned two consecutive Oscars for his performances in the dramas "Philadelphia" (1993) and "Forrest Gump" (1994), which was based on Winston Groom's novel of the same name.

He also received best actor award nominations for "Big" (1988) and "Saving Private Ryan" (1998).

In addition to appearing in the baseball film "A League of Their Own" (1992) and the NASA biopic "Apollo 13" (1995), Hanks was in "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993), another iconic Ephron rom-com in which he starred opposite Ryan.

Additionally, he voiced Woody, a Wild West action figure, in Pixar's "Toy Story" (1995).

Hanks has portrayed an impressive range of real and fictional characters.

Following "You've Got Mail," Hanks had starring roles in late-1990s and early-2000s hits such as "The Green Mile" (1999), "Cast Away" (2000), and "Catch Me If You Can" (2002).

He also lent his voice to the conductor in "The Polar Express" (2004) and reprised his role as Woody in all the "Toy Story" sequels, most recently "Toy Story 4" (2019).

Hanks has notably portrayed a number of real-life figures on the screen, too.

He played Walt Disney in "Saving Mr. Banks" (2013), pilot Chesley Sullenberger in "Sully" (2016), Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee in "The Post" (2017), and Fred Rogers in "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" (2019), which scored him an Academy Award nomination.

He also held roles in the Apple TV+ war drama "Greyhound" (2020) and Amazon's "Borat Subsequent Moviefilm" (2020).

His most recent projects include "Elvis" (2022), Disney's live-action "Pinocchio" (2022), "A Man Called Otto" (2022), and "The Bloody Hundredth" (2024).

Ryan played Kathleen Kelly, a children's bookstore owner who unknowingly starts an epistolary romance with Joe.

Ryan played Kathleen, the owner of an independent children's bookstore called The Shop Around the Corner. After joining an over-30 chat room online, Kathleen unknowingly starts an epistolary romance with Joe, her business rival.

Like Hanks, Ryan began professionally acting in the early 1980s.

Some of her first credits include lead roles in the long-running CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" — her character, Betsy Stewart, was a fan favorite whose on-screen wedding garnered 20 million viewers — and in the Western ABC series "Wildside."

Leaving TV for Hollywood, Ryan had a supporting part in "Top Gun" (1986) as Nick "Goose" Bradshaw's wife, Carole. But it was her roles in romantic comedies that earned her a reputation as "America's sweetheart."

Opposite Billy Crystal, she charmed viewers in Rob Reiner's friends-to-lovers romance "When Harry Met Sally…" (1989). In "Sleepless in Seattle," she played a journalist who falls for a single dad (Hanks) after his young son calls into a radio talk show.

Ryan went on to star in the drama "When a Man Loves a Woman" (1994) and appeared opposite Nicolas Cage in the romantic fantasy "City of Angels" (1998).

She also provided the speaking voice for the title character in "Anastasia" (1997), the animated musical inspired by the Russian royal family.

Ryan has since starred in commercial and independent movies and made her directorial debut.

In 2001, Ryan starred in "Kate and Leopold," a romantic drama that centers on a 19th-century duke (Hugh Jackman) who time-travels to present-day New York.

A few years later, she pivoted to roles in independent films such as "In the Land of Women" (2007) and "Serious Moonlight" (2009).

Ryan's projects in the 2010s have ranged from Lisa Kudrow's improvisational Showtime comedy series "Web Therapy" about a psychologist's teletherapy practice to the film "Fan Girl" (2015), which stars Kiernan Shipka as a teen who wants to make a movie about All Time Low, her favorite band.

On top of making her directorial debut with "Ithaca" (2015), a drama based on William Saroyan's novel "The Human Comedy," she also starred in it alongside Hanks and her son, Jack Quaid.

She most recently directed and starred alongside David Duchovny in a romantic comedy called "What Happens Later" (2023).

Stand-up comedian Dave Chappelle portrayed Joe's best friend, Kevin Jackson.

Although better known as a comedian, Chappelle had several film credits to his name by the time he played Kevin, Joe's best friend and a store manager at Fox Books.

Chappelle was in Mel Brooks' musical parody "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" (1993) and the 1996 remake of the sci-fi comedy "The Nutty Professor."

He also appeared in the action-thriller "Con Air" (1997).

Chappelle's comedy career took off in the 2000s with stand-up specials and his own show.

Chappelle recorded his first hourlong HBO stand-up special, "Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly," in 2000.

Three years later, he launched "Chappelle's Show," a weekly sketch series on Comedy Central that aired until 2006.

In addition to touring his stand-up act around the country, he has earned three consecutive Grammy awards for best comedy album.

Although mainly focusing on stand-up, Chappelle still acts from time to time. He played Morris in Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" (2015) and George "Noodles" Stone in "A Star is Born" (2018)

In recent years, he has appeared in his own TV comedy specials.

Greg Kinnear played Frank Navasky, Kathleen's boyfriend and a journalist obsessed with analog technology.

Kinnear played Kathleen's boyfriend, Frank, a New York Observer writer who loves analog technology, especially typewriters, and decries the computer revolution.

Kinnear had a number of small parts in shows and in made-for-TV movies in the late 1980s before making his feature-film debut in the superhero parody "Blankman" (1994).

His first major role was in Sydney Pollack's remake of the romantic drama "Sabrina" (1995) opposite Harrison Ford and Julia Ormond.

In 1997, he starred in "As Good as It Gets" as Simon Bishop, a painter who lives next door to a reclusive romance novelist (Jack Nicholson). Kinnear earned his first and only Oscar nomination to date for that performance.

Kinnear has appeared in buzzy indie films like "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006) and several high-profile TV series.

Kinnear's biggest roles in the 2000s spanned from baseball coach Roy Bullock in Richard Linklater's remake of "Bad News Bears" (2005) to pageant dad Richard Hoover in the hit independent film "Little Miss Sunshine."

He also played Tina Fey's romantic interest in "Baby Mama" (2008).

He also starred as Jack Kennedy in Reelz's "The Kennedys," played billionaire Bill Shepherd in season six of Netflix's "House of Cards," and made a cameo as himself in Netflix's "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."

Additionally, he portrayed a young Joe Biden in "Confirmation" (2016), which chronicles Clarence Thomas' Supreme Court nomination hearings, and has starred in festival-favorite indies such as "Little Men" (2016) and "Brigsby Bear" (2017).

Kinnear appeared in the thriller "Dreamland (2019)," costarring Armie Hammer, Gary Oldman, and Lily-Rose Depp. He also held roles in the Apple TV series "Black Bird" and season four of Netflix's "You."

Posey played one of the most misunderstood characters in "You've Got Mail" — Patricia, a high-powered book editor who Joe dates for most of the movie.

Despite coming off as aloof and self-absorbed, the ambitious Patricia offers to give Kathleen a job when The Shop Around the Corner is jeopardized by Fox Books.

Posey gained name recognition in the 1990s from appearing in Richard Linklater's "Dazed and Confused" (1993), "Kicking and Screaming" (1995), and the cult classic "Party Girl" (1995).

She also portrayed art dealer Mary Boone in the biopic "Basquiat" (1996) and starred in the mockumentary "Waiting for Guffman" (1997).

In addition to acting in films, Posey has made guest appearances in shows like NBC's "Parks and Recreation" and Fox's "New Girl."

Posey also starred as June Harris, also known as Dr. Smith, in the Netflix sci-fi reboot "Lost in Space," which aired from 2018 to 2021.

She has also played recurring parts in ABC's "Boston Legal," CBS' "The Good Wife," and TBS-HBO's "Search Party" in addition to making guest appearances on series like NBC's "Will and Grace," "Parks and Recreation," and "New Girl."

Posey also played Blair in AMC's "Tales of the Walking Dead" and is set to appear in season three of HBO Max's "The White Lotus."

In 1994, he appeared with Hawke in the cult classic "Reality Bites," a film focusing on recent college grads in Houston.

The cast of 'The Sound of Music,' then and now

  • "The Sound of Music," released in 1965, is a family favorite during the holidays.
  • Julie Andrews, who played Maria, mostly recently narrated "Bridgerton."
  • Kym Karath, who played Gretl von Trapp, is now 66 years old and has considered a return to acting.

"The Sound of Music" was released 59 years ago, but it is still many families' favorite holiday movie.

The film was the first to gross more than $100 million at the domestic box office when it was released and, when adjusted for inflation, its total gross is equal to more than $1 billion today, Fortune reported.

Julie Andrews, who played the lead role of Maria, went on to become a household name and still works as a voice actor on popular television series like "Bridgerton" and its spinoff series "Queen Charlotte." Many of the actors who played the von Trapp children went on to pursue other careers outside Hollywood, but some continued acting.

Here's what the cast of "The Sound of Music" is up to now.

Julie Andrews played Maria, a feisty nun who takes a job as a governess for the seven von Trapp children.

At the time of the film's production in 1964, Julie Andrews was just 29 years old. Initially, Andrews was hesitant to accept the role. The star's breakthrough Disney film "Mary Poppins" was still in production, and she was worried about playing another "wholesome nanny" role, Biography reported.

Other actresses, including Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day, and even Grace Kelly, were considered for the role, but in the end, Andrews was screenplay writer Ernest Lehman's first choice.

It ended up being the right one — Andrews received an Oscar nomination for best actress at the 38th Academy Awards.

Andrews, 89, has had a prolific acting career. Among her roles, she played Queen Clarisse in the "Princess Diaries" movies, although she revealed she likely won't be returning for the third film.

Over the past 10 years, she's mostly voice-acted, appearing as characters in the "Shrek" and "Despicable Me" movies, among others. Andrews also voices the narrator and elusive gossip columnist Lady Whistledown in "Bridgerton."

"She was at the top of our list for Lady Whistledown," "Bridgerton" showrunner Chris Van Dusen told Oprah Magazine in 2020. "We offered her the part, sent her the scripts, not thinking anything would really come of it. But surprisingly she read the scripts and fell in love with them."

"Bridgerton" series author Julia Quinn said she was shocked. "When they told me I legitimately stopped breathing," she said. "I mean, I should be dead."

Speaking to Vanity Fair in 2022, Andrews said her pivot to voice acting over the last decade has been "wonderful."

"I don't have to get hair and makeup anymore. I just go into the studio and do my voiceovers," she said.

Christopher Plummer played the aloof Captain Georg von Trapp.

Plummer also recalled being hesitant about the script, "because it was so awful and sentimental and gooey," he told the Hollywood Reporter in 2011. "You had to work terribly hard to try and infuse some minuscule bit of humor into it."

However, Plummer's background as a dramatic actor made him perfect for the role in the producers' eyes. Despite his acting chops, his singing ended up being dubbed in the final version with singer Bill Lee's voice, NPR reported.

He was nominated for three Academy Awards, ultimately winning the best supporting actor award for "Beginners" in 2012. At 82, he became the oldest actor to ever receive an Oscar.

In 2019, Plummer starred in Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" opposite Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.

However, his part as Captain Georg von Trapp in "The Sound of Music" is arguably his most fondly remembered role, though he frequently shunned the movie in later years.

"I was a bit bored with the character," Plummer told The Boston Globe in 2010. "Although we worked hard enough to make him interesting, it was a bit like flogging a dead horse. And the subject matter is not mine. I mean, it can't appeal to every person in the world. It's not my cup of tea."

Despite not liking his role in the movie, Plummer remained "the best of friends" with his costar Julie Andrews for decades, she told ABC.

On February 5, 2021, Christopher Plummer died at his home in Connecticut with his wife, Elaine Taylor, by his side. He was 91.

Charmian Carr was a little bit older than her character Liesl von Trapp was supposed to be in the movie.

Rather than being 16 going on 17, the actor was actually 21 years old when she played the eldest von Trapp child in her breakout role.

The Telegraph reported that Carr's mother recommended her to a casting agent for "The Sound of Music," saying, "She's 21, but she could pass for 16."

The actor was working as a physician's assistant at the time and had no theatrical or musical training. However, she captivated the casting agents with her beautiful voice and appearance.

Carr starred in only one TV movie after "The Sound of Music." She died in 2016.

Carr starred in the musical "Evening Primrose" in 1966, the year after "The Sound of Music" was released.

"It was hard to have your first role as the high spot of your career," she told the London Daily Telegraph, The Washington Post reported. "I felt smothered by Liesl. She began to feel like my evil twin, the perfect one that everyone loved."

While taking a short break from touring the world promoting "The Sound of Music," Carr met and married her husband, Jay Brent. Carr continued acting for a while, but after becoming a mother to two children, she decided to leave Hollywood and focus on building an interior design company. She and her husband divorced in 1991, after which she wrote her autobiography, "Forever Liesl."

On September 17, 2016, Carr died due to complications from a rare form of dementia at the age of 73.

Nicholas Hammond played the second-eldest von Trapp child, Friedrich.

When "The Sound of Music" was released, Nicholas Hammond was 15 years old. His mother, Eileen Bennett, was also an actor, but the one who indirectly influenced him to go into acting was Julie Andrews herself.

"I saw her onstage in 'My Fair Lady' when I was nine and I made a decision that night that I wanted to do what that lady does," Hammond told Parade in 2013.

Hammond was the first actor to play Spider-Man in a live-action production of the comic. Born in 1950, he is also the only actor born before the character first appeared in a comic book in 1962.

Hammond, 74, was born in the US but moved to Australia in the mid-1980s. The actor now lives in Sydney where he works as an actor, screenwriter, and director. He's also remained close with his "The Sound of Music" costars, especially the other von Trapp children.

"We bonded because, for all of us, and particularly the seven kids, it was an extraordinary experience as a young person to go through — where one day you're an unknown child actor and literally the day after the film opens, we were the seven most famous children in the world," he told Parade.

The film was released when Menzies-Urich was just 15 years old.

Though Louisa didn't have much of a storyline, Menzies-Urich was able to display her ballet background during the performance of "So Long, Farewell."

Menzies-Urich continued to act for the next 25 years, most notably as Jessica 6 in the sci-fi TV series "Logan's Run."

The series, which was a spinoff of the movie of the same name, only ran for one season between 1977 and 1978. Menzies-Urich continued to act until 1990, mostly appearing in television shows and TV movies.

She died in 2017 at the age of 68. Her son, Ryan Urich, shared the news.

"She was an actress, a ballerina, and loved living her life to the fullest," Urich said, USA Today reported.

Prior to landing the role of Brigitta, Cartwright acted in the 1950s TV series "The Danny Thomas Show."

"Thousands were interviewed to play the parts of the von Trapp children, and when I got word I had been cast, I was so excited," she wrote on her website. "Danny Thomas released me from the last show of the 'Danny Thomas Show' season so I could begin working on this movie. For that, I am so grateful because he didn't have to do that."

She went on to act in several TV series.

Angela Cartwright, now 72, had a relatively successful acting career following "The Sound of Music." Her acting credits include roles in "Lost in Space," "My Three Sons," and "The Love Boat."

She's continued acting and voiced the role of Edna Platt in a 2022 episode of "Adventures in Odyssey."

Turner, 68, lives in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and has operated her floral design company for over 30 years, according to her website.

During the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Turner paid homage to her "The Sound of Music" roots with a new business venture: making face masks based on the iconic curtains used to make the children's play clothes in the movie.

She also makes and sells scarves made out of a similar fabric to the one used in the movie.

Karath had a successful career as a child actor in the early 1960s before landing her role in "The Sound of Music" when she was 5.

At the time of the movie's filming, Karath couldn't swim, which made the boat-flipping scene challenging.

"The little one can't swim, please fall to the front of the boat so you can get to her quickly," Andrews told ABC News the directors asked her. "Of course, I went to the back of the boat."

Another von Trapp child ended up having to lift Karath to safety.

Karath later took a break from Hollywood and moved to Paris, where she studied art history and modeled. She later returned to acting.

After "The Sound of Music," Karath had roles in television shows like "Dr. Kildare," "Lassie," "Lost in Space," and "The Brady Bunch."

After graduating from the University of Southern California, the actor, now 66, moved to Paris to study art history and model. She married her husband, Philippe L'Equilbec, and returned to the US. However, she took a lengthy break from acting to raise their son.

In 2005, the cast of "The Sound of Music" reunited to share what they were up to now. At the time, Karath said she was resuming her acting career in Los Angeles, but she hasn't had any roles since 1981.

  • The hit musical-comedy "School of Rock" (2003) came to theaters over 20 years ago.
  • Jack Black, Joan Cusack, and Sarah Silverman had strong careers before and after the film.
  • Miranda Cosgrove made a name for herself on TV, but many of the young actors left Hollywood.

"School of Rock" hit theaters in October 2003. The movie starred Jack Black as a struggling musician who impersonates his friend to get a gig as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school and enlists a class of fourth-graders to perform at a local battle of the bands.

Richard Linkletter directed the beloved film, which Andrew Lloyd Webber turned into a Broadway musical and which was adapted into a Nickelodeon TV show. Here's what the movie's stars have been up to the past two decades since its debut.

Jack Black, who starred as Dewey Finn, is still a successful actor and musician.

Prior to rocking out and pretending to be Mr. Schneebly in "School of Rock," Jack Black already had an impressive career.

He'd been acting since 1984 and was known for films like "The Cable Guy" (1996), "High Fidelity" (2000), "Orange County" (2002), and "Ice Age" (2002).

The actor also starred on HBO's "Tenacious D," which chronicled a fictionalized version of his rock duo with Kyle Gass.

After "School of Rock," Black went on to star in major films like "King Kong" (2005), "Nacho Libre" (2006), "Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny" (2006), "The Holiday" (2006), "Tropic Thunder" (2008), the "Kung Fu Panda" franchise, and the "Jumanji" reboots.

He's also made several TV appearances on shows like Fox's "The Simpsons," Nickelodeon's "iCarly," and HBO's "The Brink."

Outside of acting, Black and Gass have released several Tenacious D albums and videos. The duo recently suspended their 2024 tour after Gass joked about an attempted assassination of Donald Trump.

In 2023 alone, Black appeared in Hulu's "History of the World: Part II," "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and Disney+'s "The Mandalorian."

In March, Black told Ireland's JOE he'd love to work on a "School of Rock" sequel but said that the original screenplay's writer, Mike White, might be too busy with his huge hit "The White Lotus."
