Red Sox star Jarren Duran opens up about trying to take his own life: 'I didn’t even want to be here anymore'

This story discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

The Boston Red Sox are the subject for Netflix’s latest behind-the-scenes docuseries, entitled "The Clubhouse: A Year With the Red Sox."

One of the interviews conducted during the 2024 season was with outfielder Jarren Duran, who had a breakout All-Star campaign. But the interview was quite the serious one, as he discussed his 2021 and 2022 seasons, which he said fueled his attempted suicide.

Duran has been open about his mental health struggles he’s dealt with, as he wasn’t meeting his high expectations within the organization to start his big league career.

He revealed that he got the point where "I was sitting in my room. I had my rifle, and I had a bullet, and I pulled the trigger, and the gun clicked, but nothing happened."

"To this day, I think God just didn’t let me take my own life because I seriously don’t know why it didn’t go off. I took it as a sign of, ‘I might have to be here for a reason,’ so that’s when I started to look myself in the mirror after the gun didn’t go off," Duran said in the docuseries, per ESPN. "I was like, ‘Do I want to be here, or do I not want to be here? That happened for a reason, and obviously you’re here for a reason, so let’s be the way you want to be and play [the way] you want to play and live the way you want to live.'"

Duran detailed being in a dark place while hearing fans berate him in the outfield during games. They were yelling to him to go back to Triple-A Worcester, and many other things that only added to how he felt.

RED SOX'S JARREN DURAN SUSPENDED AFTER USING ANTI-GAY SLUR DURING GAME

"I was already hearing it from fans," he said. "And what they said to me, [it was like],‘I’ve told myself 10 times worse in the mirror. That was a really tough time for me. I didn’t even want to be here anymore."

Duran was a rookie during the 2021 season, when he slashed .215/.241/.336 with a .578 OPS over 33 games. He hit three doubles, two triples and two homers with 10 RBI that year.

His 2022 campaign wasn’t much better, as he hit .221 with three homers and 17 RBI over 58 games (204 at-bats).

However, Duran turned things around in 2023, as he slashed .295/.346/.482 with 34 doubles, eight homers and 40 RBI over 102 games for Boston.

He had a career year in 2024, leading MLB in doubles (48), triples (14), at-bats (671) and plate appearances (735), while belting 21 homers with 75 RBI.

Duran also made his first career All-Star Game, earning MVP honors after belting a home run that helped the American League beat the National League.

There was some controversy with Duran last season, though, as MLB suspended him two games for saying an anti-gay slur toward a fan. He would quickly apologize, saying that he was sorry for his actions and would work to be better from his mistake.

"Jarren's decision to share his story is an act of courage that reaches far beyond baseball," Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement, via ESPN. "By opening up, he's showing others who may be struggling that they're not alone and that asking for help isn't just OK, it's essential.

"Every member of this organization continues to stand with him."

So far this season, Duran is hitting .239 (11-for-46) with two doubles, one triple and seven RBI over 10 games.

Maine sues Trump admin over funding freeze for refusal to keep trans athletes out of women's sports

Maine officials filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Monday following the agency’s decision to freeze funding to the state for its refusal to reverse its transgender athlete participation policy in schools.

The state accused the USDA of "withholding funding used to feed children in schools, childcare centers, and after-school programming as well as disabled adults in congregate settings."

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"Under the banner of keeping children safe, the Trump Administration is illegally withholding grant funds that go to keeping children fed," Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said in a news release. "This is just another example where no law or consequence appears to restrain the administration as it seeks capitulation to its lawlessness.

"The President and his cabinet secretaries do not make the law and they are not above the law, and this action is necessary to remind the President that Maine will not be bullied into violating the law."

Frey added that the funding freeze was "unlawful" and sought a temporary restraining order against the department from withholding the funds.

Fox News Digital reached out to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for comment.

The USDA announced the funding freeze and a review of federal funding to Maine after the state refused to provide equal opportunities to women and girls in educational programs.

The state has refused to comply with President Donald Trump's February executive order to ban trans athletes from girls' and women's sports, prompting immense federal pressure. Trump initially vowed to cut federal funding to the state if it refused to comply with the order during a Feb. 20 speech.

MEGHAN MCCAIN MAKES STANCE ON TRANS ATHLETES IN WOMEN'S SPORTS CLEAR AFTER ANDY COHEN SPAT

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said the state must agree to protect female athletes from trans inclusion before funding is restored.

"In order to continue to receive taxpayer dollars from USDA, the state of Maine must demonstrate compliance with Title IX which protects female student athletes from having to compete with or against or having to appear unclothed before males," Rollins wrote in a letter to the state.

"In addition, USDA has launched a full review of grants awarded by the Biden Administration to the Maine Department of Education. Many of these grants appear to be wasteful, redundant, or otherwise against the priorities of the Trump Administration. USDA will not stand for the Biden Administration’s bloated bureaucracy and will instead focus on a Department that is farmer-first and without a leftist social agenda."

Frey alleged that the "Child Nutrition Program of the Maine Department of Education was unable to access several sources of federal funding, all of which are necessary to feed children and vulnerable adults" after Rollins had signaled the funding freeze wouldn’t affect programs that keep children fed.

The Department of Education also referred Maine's "noncompliance with Title IX" to the Justice Department. The agency gave the state until April 11 to comply.

Panthers sign Colin Granger, ex-college basketball center, in attempt to make him tight end

The Carolina Panthers will have a fun training camp project after their latest announcement on Monday.

Colin Granger, a former Division 1 basketball player for Ohio University, Western Carolina and Coastal Carolina, is going to try to convert to an NFL tight end.

The 6-foot-8, 245-pound Granger was announced as a signee for the Panthers as he is five years removed from high school and is allowed to join a team as a free agent.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Granger was a center during his college career, playing two seasons at Ohio University, two seasons at Western Carolina and finishing off at Coastal Carolina.

He was a 52.3% shooter from the field during his career, while hauling in 322 total rebounds with the three different programs. He had 137 rebounds at Coastal Carolina to cap an impressive career.

DEAN WELLS, FORMER NFL LINEBACKER AND KENTUCKY STANDOUT, DEAD AT 54 FOLLOWING CANCER BATTLE

Now, Panthers brass has history with converting former basketball players into NFL-caliber pieces, as head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan did so with George Fant with the Seattle Seahawks.

Fant, who stands at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds, played basketball at Western Kentucky, and he was converted into a hybrid offensive tackle and tight end. He ended up playing seven total seasons with Seattle, the New York Jets and Houston Texans.

ESPN reports that Fant has been working with Granger to get him ready for the transition, and he was the one who told the Panthers about his potential.

Granger, though, hasn’t been on a football field since eighth grade, so the transition isn’t expected to be an easy one.

But, of course, this isn’t new, especially at the tight end position. Think Antonio Gates, Jimmy Graham and the great Tony Gonzalez, who were all former basketball players before seeing tons of success in the NFL.

Granger will be competing with a slew of tight ends in Panthers training camp this summer, including Tommy Tremble and Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Fencer Stephanie Turner receives honor for courage after refusal to compete against trans athlete

Female fencer Stephanie Turner was honored as a Courage Wins Champion for her decision to take a knee instead of competing against a biological male during an event earlier this month.

XX-XY Athletics announced Turner as the award winner on Monday.

"By taking a knee, she became more powerful than any male. She stood her ground to fight for women’s sports," XX-XY Athletics founder Jennifer Sey said in a news release. "She’s a hero."

Turner will receive $5,000 and be entered into a leadership program.

Sey announced the award on Fox News Channel’s "America Reports."

"We aim to take the sting out of monetary cancelation and platform these women and bring them on board," she said. "They have community. They have support. They will not stand alone."

Turner refused to compete against trans competitor Redmond Sullivan at the Cherry Blossom Open. Turner received a black card for her decision to take a knee, leading to her expulsion from the tournament for serious infractions or unsportsmanlike behavior.

MARK CUBAN WEIGHS IN ON TRANSGENDER ATHLETES IN WOMEN'S SPORTS: 'PEOPLE JUST AREN'T READY'

"I knew what I had to do because USA Fencing had not been listening to women's objections regarding [its gender eligibility policy]," Turner told Fox News Digital in an interview last week. "I took a knee immediately at that point. Redmond was under the impression that I was going to start fencing. So, when I took the knee, I looked at the ref, and I said, ‘I’m sorry, I cannot do this. I am a woman, and this is a man. And this is a women's tournament. And I will not fence this individual.'"

USA Fencing defended its trans-inclusion policy in wake of the protest.

"USA Fencing remains committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful community for everyone in our sport. We believe in the principle of creating safe communities where all athletes, and community members, have a place," the statement read.

"While we understand there are a range of perspectives, USA Fencing will continue to engage in respectful, research-based dialogue and review as policy evolves in the Olympic and Paralympic movement as well as domestic law, hate speech of any kind is not acceptable—online or in person. Let's keep the conversation respectful and the strip welcoming to all."

Gracie Hunt's mystery man creates buzz as she teases new romance

Gracie Hunt, the daughter of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, seems to have a new romance, but there's some mystery behind it.

Hunt was most recently connected with Cody Keith, an ex-quarterback for East Carolina University who got a shot in multiple NFL training camps before seeing some interest in the Canadian Football League.

Keith is now a real estate broker at his The Keith Corp.

But Hunt teased what appears to be a new romance with an Instagram Story post that referenced the Taylor Swift hit song "Invisible String."

"After meeting 7.5 years ago in this place… all along there was some invisible string," she captioned the picture of her hugging a tall man at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

GRACIE HUNT REFLECTS ON ‘THE PAINFUL, THE JOYFUL’ MOMENTS EXPERIENCED DURING CHIEFS' SUPER BOWL RUN

It's currently unknown who this new potential suitor is.

Hunt confirmed her relationship with Keith in September 2024, but breakup rumors swirled around earlier this year after Keith's social media highlights for March didn't have Hunt anywhere to be seen.

The 33-year-old Keith shared a bunch of pictures on his Instagram account, and Hunt wasn't present in any of them.

Hunt also revealed that Keith had a pre-existing friendship with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, telling OutKick in December 2024 that they "actually trained together out of college."

"It is just so funny how small the world is," Hunt added. "They have been buddies this whole time, and it took him all this time to meet me."

Hunt is a staple at Chiefs games every season, usually being spotted on the sidelines before games and commenting on what went down on the gridiron after the final whistle via social media.

Trump gushes over Shohei Ohtani as president welcomes Dodgers to White House

President Donald Trump touted Shohei Ohtani’s accomplishments as he welcomed the Los Angeles Dodgers to the White House on Monday to celebrate their 2024 title.

Trump spoke highly of the Japanese Dodgers star who put himself into a club of his own during the 2024 regular season. He became the first batter in MLB history to hit at least 50 home runs and steal at least 50 bases. The president turned around to shake Ohtani’s hand and appeared to be stunned.

"He looks like a movie star," Trump said. "He’s got a good future, I’m telling you."

Ohtani had 54 home runs, 59 stolen bases, batted .390 and drove in 130 RBI in 159 games for the Dodgers. He was awarded the National League MVP for his efforts. It was his first season with Los Angeles after signing a massive 10-year, $700 million contract with the team in the prior offseason.

Trump mentioned that Ohtani clinched the 50-50 moment in a game he went 6-for-6 in. He said some called it "the greatest game ever." He had three homers and 10 RBI in the game.

VLADIMIR GUERRERO JR, BLUE JAYS AGREE TO MASSIVE 14-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION: REPORTS

"Is he good," Trump jokingly asked manager Davie Roberts, who responded, "He’s only getting better."

"And he’s getting better. That’s scary for a lot of people," Trump said.

Later, Ohtani took a photo with Trump in the Oval Office and posed next to the Declaration of Independence.

Ohtani helped the Dodgers to a National League West division title and he kept his hot hitting going in the postseason. He had three home runs between the National League Division Series and the National League Championship Series.

He cooled off during the World Series, but the team still managed to defeat the New York Yankees in five games. It was the Dodgers’ second title since 2020.

This season, Ohtani has three home runs in 11 games. He is hitting .268 with three RBI and two stolen bases. He may return to the mound as well and get back to pitching.

Roberto Clemente's son sheds light on Pirates meeting after team draws fury for removing tribute

EXCLUSIVE: Roberto Clemente Jr. met with Pittsburgh Pirates officials on Monday to figure out ways to further honor the legacy of his legendary father following the outcry about the team removing an outfield tribute to the Baseball Hall of Famer.

The tribute was placed on the right-field wall – a sign with Roberto Clemente’s name and No. 21. Fans noticed before the team’s home opener that the tribute was removed in favor of an advertisement for an alcoholic beverage.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Clemente’s son expressed dismay about the decision in a statement over the weekend, but he told Fox News Digital the two sides were "brainstorming" ideas about how to properly rectify the situation after having an initial conversation with the team.

"Right now, we’re going to be brainstorming. We need to iron out some ideas that we have listed. I’m not going to get into the details right now," he said. "But I think we should have something in the next couple of weeks to at least really kind of tie in this new relationship with the Pirates. And I think things happen for a reason.

"This is something we feel really tied in with the team forever. I always say that I was born with an eyepatch and I would die with an eyepatch, even though I never played for the Pirates, but obviously, I’ve been connected and it doesn’t matter where I go, I am representing the Pirates and we, as a family, have always been ambassadors, not only to the game but for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"I truly do know that fans show their support and some frustration to a lot of things that are going on. I believe that we can have a great outcome from this conversation that will benefit the fans of Clemente in Pittsburgh."

Clemente said he learned about the tribute’s removal through social media.

"I never really realized that the sign was down until later on when I got home through social media seeing the post there," he explained. "It was very surprising to me. I was surprised and obviously my reaction was ‘wow.’ That’s all I said and I left it at that.

"Little did I know it was going to catch fire and obviously there’s a lot of emotions with the fans and the team and some frustrations and I think that kind of was the last straw for a lot of the big Pirate and Clemente fans, and they took it upon themselves to express themselves, and obviously it was an overwhelming response. It was something that I didn’t think a ‘wow’ would actually be that big, but obviously it wasn’t really the wow, it was actually the fact that the sign had come down and there was an advertisement on the wall."

MLB COMMISSIONER ROB MANFRED BREAKS SILENCE ON TORPEDO BATS

The Pirates organization said removing the tribute was an "honest mistake."

"We did not intend to disrespect the legacy of Roberto Clemente by adding the advertisement to the pad in right field," team president Travis Williams said in a statement.

"When we added the advertisement to the pad, it was an oversight not to keep the No. 21 logo. This is ultimately on me, not anyone else in the organization. It was an honest mistake."

The team said it would return the No.  21 logo.

"We have used this area for advertisements for many years. When we didn’t have a sponsor coming out of COVID, we added an additional element in 2022 to honor the legacy of Roberto," Williams added. "It was a replica of the Three Rivers signate honoring him.

"This is in addition to the many elements throughout the ball park that honor his legacy, including the fact that the wall is named the Roberto Clemente Wall, is 21 feet tall and has two No. 21s on it.

"We want to make sure that the Clemente family understands that we intended no disrespect to their father. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Clemente family and apologize to them and our fans for our honest mistake."

He told Golf Digest after his release from prison he was embarrassed by his behavior and asked his former girlfriends for forgiveness.

Cabrera is set to participate at the Masters later this week, as champions have lifetime exemptions.

NFL personality Annie Agar suffers black eye, concussion after scary fall

NFL personality Annie Agar revealed a scary injury to her fans last week and appeared in a video with a black eye and swollen face.

Agar, whose videos about NFL teams meeting to talk about their weeks put her in the national sports spotlight over the last few years, talked Thursday about how she passed out in her bathroom and woke up with the injuries.

"Guys, I’m OK. Thank you all for asking," she said. "Just in an extreme amounts of pain in my eyebrow and probably concussed. So other than that, everything’s fine. The story is not that exciting. I drove home from St. Louis from my speech. I felt very dehydrated. I woke up the next day, felt super nauseous when I got up, walked to the bathroom and just passed out.

"I don’t remember falling. I don’t remember anything. I woke up with this (a black eye) and I think I drilled my head on either the corner of something or the floor. It was not fun – 10 out of 10 would not recommend."

Oklahoma softball coach defends players who attended Riley Gaines event

Oklahoma Sooners softball coach Patty Gasso defended her players after some attended an event hosted by women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines last week.

Gaines has championed fairness in women’s sports since Lia Thomas tied with her at the NCAA Championships in 2022. Thomas also became the first transgender athlete to win an NCAA women’s swimming championship. Since then, current and former female athletes have come together to keep biological males out of women’s sports.

Sooners pitchers Audrey Lowry and Sam Landry were in attendance for Gaines’ speech at the Turning Point USA event, according to OU Daily. The women were far from the only Sooners athletes at the event.

Gasso told the OU Daily that she did not hear Gaines’ praise of her and her team and would not comment.

"But the fact that our team is there, it’s their right whether they want to go or not," she said. "I support them and whatever they choose."

Peyton McQuillan, a Sooners track athlete, defended Gaines’ message in an interview with the student newspaper.

WOMEN'S DISC GOLFER REFUSES TO FACE TRANSGENDER COMPETITOR, DAYS AFTER FENCER KNEELS IN PROTEST

"She just wants to make sure everyone has a fair opportunity, and it’s clear that she cares," she said. "It’s very easy to relate to it."

Haley Bergstrom, a rower for Oklahoma, backed keeping biological males out of girls’ and women’s sports. She pointed to the biological differences between men and women. "Biologically, men just have an advantage over women, no matter what," she said. "So we would just like to keep that simple, but there is no problem against trans people in general."

Gaines did receive pro-trans protests at the school.

"I’m really disturbed by the sort of panic that I've seen developing over the last couple of years — the suggestion that trans people are dangerous, that they’re harming society, that letting trans people participate in everyday life is somehow a risky thing that should be avoided," librarian Cynthia Teague told The Oklahoman

"In particular with sports, there are so few trans athletes at any kind of elite level, and participating in sports is something that I think trans teens, especially, ought to be able to do."

The NCAA altered its policy to keep biological males out of women’s sports. However, women’s sports advocates have said the organization has left loopholes in its policy to keep that door open.

Meghan McCain makes stance on trans athletes in women's sports clear after Andy Cohen spat

Meghan McCain feuded with Bravo TV host Andy Cohen about transgender athletes competing against biological females in sports last month, and on Friday, she wrote a column about her beliefs.

The daughter of the late Sen. John McCain came to the defense of female athletes in sports in her column in the New York Post.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"Opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports is not an issue of tolerance or equality. It’s about fairness — and protecting biological women," she wrote. "I do not believe in any universe a person born a biological male will not have a physical advantage over a biological female, no matter what hormones they have taken."

McCain added that she did not believe that women and girls should be forced to share a locker room with a biological male – an issue former NCAA star swimmers Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan spoke to lawmakers about last year.

McCain added that, ultimately, the issue is a "lose-lose" for Democrats.

MARK CUBAN WEIGHS IN ON TRANSGENDER ATHLETES IN WOMEN'S SPORTS: 'PEOPLE JUST AREN'T READY'

"This is a lose-lose culture war issue for Democrats. I will never understand why they want to die on this hill," she wrote. "They claim it affects such a small number of people, but that argument also works in reverse — why are they promoting an unfair situation for the ego of a few?

"This is an issue of equality. I am not hedging, I will not buck to societal pressure and I will not move. To everyone who fights alongside me on this issue, I thank you for your bravery."

The issue began in March after McCain highlighted Payton McNabb’s injury she suffered in a volleyball match at the hands of a transgender athlete.

He suggested in his response to McCain that McNabb was "vilifying" transgender people.

"Surprised you’re buying into the vilification of the trans community given the real problems happening in this country, your previous ally-ship of the lgbtq community, and the fact that this non issue affects about four people in this country," Cohen wrote in a post on X.

McCain added in her column that she has known Cohen for years but suggested now he may be considered a "former friend."

Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Blue Jays agree to massive 14-year contract extension: reports

The Toronto Blue Jays and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. agreed to a 14-year contract extension worth $500 million early Monday, according to multiple reports.

The team has yet to announce the deal.

Guerrero was set to become a free agent after the 2025 season was over. The slugging first baseman would have had plenty of suitors on the open market but reportedly chose to stay with the team that he joined as an amateur free agent in 2015.

He will receive the third-largest contract in total dollars, behind Juan Soto’s 15-year, $765 million deal with the New York Mets and Shohei Ohtani’s 10-year, $700 million agreement with the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to The Associated Press.

The deal does not include any deferred money, The Associated Press reported.

PIRATES DRAW HEAT FOR REMOVING ROBERTO CLEMENTE TRIBUTE IN RIGHT FIELD

The son of Baseball Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero broke into the majors during the 2019 season. He led the majors in homer runs in 2021 with 48. It was the first time he was an All-Star.

Since then, Guerrero has made the All-Star team each season.

The first baseman hit .323 with an OPS of .940 and 30 home runs in 2024. However, his postseason numbers have been far from what Toronto needs to get back into World Series contention.

Guerrero is 3-for-22 all-time in the postseason. He has a batting average of .136 without any homers.

Now that Toronto appears to have Guerrero locked up for the foreseeable future, Toronto will begin its push back to the World Series. The team has not won a title since they went back-to-back during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.

Toronto is 5-5 so far this year.

Trump famously rescinded the Eagles’ White House invitation in 2018 after a contentious back-and-forth between him and NFL players over kneeling for the national anthem as an acceptable form of protest against racial injustice. As rumors swirled around whether the Eagles would go this year, the team confirmed in February they would accept an invitation.

The relationship between athletes and Trump has warmed, which became apparent during the presidential campaign last year. Players from MLB and the NFL along with UFC fighters emulated Trump’s dance moves on the field. 49ers star Nick Bosa even flashed a "Make America Great Again" hat after a game. The president has also been routinely seen at college football games, welcoming golfers into the White House and playing rounds with NFL players and golfers.

Dodgers star Mookie Betts notably changed his tune on whether he would visit the White House.

He was on the Boston Red Sox’s 2018 World Series championship team that beat the Dodgers. He decided to boycott the visit then, but last week he lamented not going.

"This is not about me. I don’t want anything to be about me. This is about the Dodgers, because these boys were there for me," he said, via the Los Angeles Times.

"No matter what I say or what I do, people are going to take it as political. But that’s definitely not what it is. This is about what the Dodgers were able to accomplish last year."

In 2019, Roberts suggested to the Los Angeles Times he would skip a White House visit after Trump criticized Roberts during the 2018 World Series for making a pitching change.

But his tune changed as well, now saying it is a "great honor" to be able to go to the White House.

"It wasn't a formal conversation that we had as a ball club," he said, via ESPN. "It's certainly a huge honor to get the invitation to the White House. It allows us to celebrate our 2024 championship. To my understanding, every World Series champion gets that honor, so it's a great honor for all of us."

PATRICK MAHOMES' MOM HAS 2-WORD REACTION TO WHITE HOUSE TRIP

Trump made sure to invite the Eagles as well, despite previous animosity.

"We just felt this is a time-honored tradition being invited by the White House," team owner Jeffrey Lurie said Wednesday, via Pro Football Talk

"So, there was no reticence whatsoever. To be celebrated at the White House is a good thing. There were special circumstances (in 2018) that were very different, and so this was kind of an obvious choice and look forward to it.

"When you grow up, and you hear about, ‘Oh, the championship team got to go to the White House,’ that’s what this is. And, so, we didn’t have that opportunity and now we do. I think we’re all looking forward to it."

The Florida Panthers were the first team to visit Trump, celebrating their Stanley Cup title. Matthew Tkachuk spoke glowingly about the ability to go to the White House.

"Thank you, Mr. President, for having us today. We greatly appreciate it. Being one of the few Americans who loves this country so much, it’s such an incredible day for myself. You wake up every day really grateful to be an American. So, thank you," he said.

Tkachuk then told the president about how special the group of men behind him were. Florida appeared in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive time last season and were able to finally get over the hump and win the trophy for the first time in franchise history.

"This team and this group of guys is special," he added. "Everybody sees what we do on the ice, but I’ve built bonds with these guys that I’ll have for the rest of my life. I’m forever grateful for these guys. We’re forever champs, and I’ll always remember these guys."

The Nebraska Cornhuskers won't regret their trip to Las Vegas.

Despite staying in southern Nevada for a long three weeks after not making the NCAA tournament, the Cornhuskers made it all the worthwhile by taking home the first-ever College Basketball Crown.

The game was tied at 35 a piece at the half, and the second half was all UCF to begin. But it appears that Nebraska took some notes from Houston's comeback against Duke in the Final Four.

The Knights got out to a 14-0 run to open up the second half, but the Cornhuskers responded with a 24-3 run to lead by six with 7:27 to go.

UCF cut it to four just over a minute later, but that's as close as UCF got as Nebraska began to continue their takeover and separate themselves.

UCONN COACH GENO AURIEMMA'S 3-WORD MESSAGE TO PAIGE BUECKERS IN EMOTIONAL EMBRACE AFTER WINNING CHAMPIONSHIP

In the final 14:36, Nebraska outscored UCF, 42-17.

Juwan Gary, the tournament's MVP, dropped 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Brice Williams and Connor Essegian each scored 21 points, with the latter doing it off the bench.

Jordan Ivy-Curry's 29 points were not enough in UCF's losing effort.

It was a deep-shooting clinic for Nebraska as they went 9-for-21 (42.9%) from three. UCF, on the other hand, went 7-for-29, a 24.1% clip.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma's 3-word message to Paige Bueckers in emotional embrace after winning championship

Paige Bueckers is finally a champion.

After making each Final Four of her illustrious career but never reaching the mountaintop, her final game at UConn ended with a national title.

The Huskies earned their 12th title on Sunday with an 82-59 victory over the reigning champion South Carolina Gamecocks.

It's UConn's first title since 2015, ending their longest drought since winning their first title in 1995.

Bueckers was taken out of the game with 1:32 to go in the game, and she couldn't hold her emotions as she shared a long hug with head coach Geno Auriemma.

Auriemma was asked by ESPN after the game what he said to his star player, and he kept it simple while holding back tears himself.

"I love you," he said. "That's all you can say."

Bueckers was later asked what she said back to her coach.

"I told him I hate him," she joked.

It's been a roller coaster for Bueckers, whose career 19.9 points per game is the most in UConn history, which has elite alumni. But she tore her ACL in 2022, forcing her to miss the entire season.

Bueckers was part of the only team in UConn history to lose a national title game before she suffered the injury, and they didn't get out of the Final Four last year.

But on Sunday, she dropped 17 points en route to finally winning it all.

Bueckers also holds the UConn record for the most points scored in March Madness throughout a career, a mark that ranks third all-time.

Women's pool tournament championship features 2 transgender players after beating female competition

A women's pool tournament championship in the United Kingdom featured two transgender athletes who defeated their female competition.

Harriet Haynes and Lucy Smith went toe-to-toe in the Ultimate Pool Women's Pro Series Event 2 at Robin Park Leisure Centre in Wigan.

Both competitors defeated four female opponents each to get to the championship bout.

Each of Haynes' matchups were rather close, but Smith dominated in the early going of the bracket. Smith defeated Jane Mitchell 7 frames to 3 in the first round and then beat Vicki Lomax, 7-1.

Haynes led the championship match, 6-3, at a point, but Smith came back to cut the deficit to one. Haynes, though, held on to the victory.

According to Ultimate Pool Group, Smith won 85 of 113 matches and 62% of 848 frames dating back to 2021 before entering the final. Haynes owned a .750 winning percentage in 241 lifetime matches and won 61% of the frames before taking on Smith.

The two players wound up facing each other in the semifinals of the U.K. Mini Series pool championships in October. Haynes won that matchup but lost the championship to a biological woman.

The rules of both the English Pool Association and World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) state that trans-identified athletes are allowed to compete in the sport with absolutely no restrictions, according to their website. Those bylaws for the English Pool Association have been under review since December 2023.

In August 2023, the WEPF announced it was updating its guidelines to only allow those who were "born female" to play the sport.

"We understand that this decision may prompt questions and discussions within our sport. We want to emphasize that our commitment to upholding the values of sportsmanship, inclusivity, and adherence to regulatory standards remains unwavering," the WEPF said at the time. "Our ultimate goal is to ensure the continued growth and development of the sport we all love, while maintaining a harmonious balance between inclusivity and the integrity of competition. We recognize the importance of fostering an environment where everyone can participate and thrive, and we remain dedicated to upholding these principles to the best of our ability."

But in October that year, the WEPF reversed that protection. It allowed transgender competitors under the condition that they identified as female for a minimum of four years and submitted proof of lowered testosterone levels.

Ex-NFL star fires back at attempt to ban tush push, worries it will cause 'slippery slope'

NFL owners tabled the discussion over whether to effectively ban the tush push until May, but the talk about the decision was still hot among players and fans in the offseason.

Former NFL star linebacker Anthony Barr said in a recent interview that banning the play would cause a snowball effect in the league.

"It’s a slippery slope," the former Minnesota Vikings linebacker told TMZ Sports. "You ban one play, then what’s next?"

The Green Bay Packers submitted a proposal that would effectively ban the play, which became famous thanks to the Philadelphia Eagles and their success with it.

The Packers' official rule change proposal would "prohibit an offensive player from pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receives the snap, immediately at the snap." The proposal added that a penalty would be assessed on any offensive player who violated the rule.

But by the end of the annual meeting, the discussion over whether to ban it was postponed. Proponents of the play and those who oppose it both presented strong arguments, while the league expressed worry about safety.

SHEDEUR SANDERS' THROWING MECHANICS SPARK NFL DEBATE AHEAD OF DRAFT

Rich McKay, the NFL Competition Committee chair, said the issues go beyond safety because there’s not enough data to say whether it’s a dangerous play. The league has said there have been no injuries reported over the tush push.

It takes 24 votes to approve rule changes.

Paige Bueckers ends UConn career with national championship as Huskies rout South Carolina

UConn's women's basketball program is right where it belongs - on the mountaintop.

The Huskies earned their 12th national championship, all of which have come since 1995, with a blowout of reigning champion South Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

In her final game before heading to the WNBA, Paige Bueckers put up 17 points in UConn's 82-59 win over the Gamecocks.

The Huskies led by 10 at the half, as South Carolina struggled from the floor - they had just 26 points in the first 20 minutes.

But Azzi Fudd began to put the nail in the coffin in the third quarter, dropping 11 of her 24 points in the frame. Despite it being South Carolina's highest-scoring quarter up to that point, it was also easily UConn's, who outscored the Gamecocks, 26-16, to take a commanding 20-point lead heading into the fourth.

The Huskies kept their foot on the pedal, though, getting out on a 18-6 run to open up the quarter, effectively icing the ball game. After that, South Carolina took their starters out, albeit to a great hand.

Bueckers and Fudd, along with the starters, came out with 1:32 to go, and an emotional Bueckers shared a long embrace with head coach Geno Auriemma. Bueckers made each Final Four of her career but never reached the top until Sunday.

It was a shooting performance South Carolina would like to forget - before knocking two of their final three, they hit just 2-for-13 from three. UConn, however, shot 48.4% from the floor.

Bueckers is likely to be the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft next week. She even missed a season with a torn ACL she suffered back in 2022, but she will still go down as one of UConn's greatest, which is already immortal company to begin with.

Bueckers' 19.9 points per game is the largest in UConn history, and she also had the third-most points in women's March Madness history throughout a career.

It's actually been nine years since UConn's last title, which is their longest drought since winning their back 30 years ago. They previously had never gone more than five years without winning it all (from 2004 to 2009).
