4 top partners quit Paul Weiss, Big Law firm that cut deal with Trump

  • Four top Paul Weiss partners announced Friday that they've resigned to start their own firm.
  • Paul Weiss is one of the firms that made a deal with Trump to reverse an EO against the firm.
  • The Big Law firms that have negotiated with Trump have faced criticism from others in the profession.

Four partners at Paul Weiss announced Friday that they are leaving the white-shoe firm, which two months ago struck a deal with the Trump administration.

Karen Dunn, a star litigator who has helped Democratic candidates prepare for presidential debates, her longtime partners Bill Isaacson and Jessica Phillips, and the former prosecutor Jeannie Rhee said in an email addressed to "partners and friends" that they are starting their own firm.

The high-profile departures underscore the ongoing turmoil at Big Law firms surrounding the firms' handling of punitive executive actions from President Donald Trump's administration. The departing lawyers did not give a reason for leaving in their statement.

Several major firms β€” including Perkins Coie and Jenner & Block β€” chose to challenge the legality of the orders in court, and have so far been successful after two judges declared two different orders unconstitutional. Other firms, including Paul Weiss, chose to make deals with the administration, prompting concern among associates and partners over their willingness to cooperate rather than fight.

The new firm's name isn't clear. Since April, several domain names containing Dunn's name and those of other lawyers have been registered anonymously. None of the websites contains any details, and it's not clear who registered them.

The lawyers have represented prominent clients like Google, Amazon, and Apple over the years. Isaacson is one of the country's top antitrust litigators. Antitrust issues have been a focus for both former President Joe Biden and Trump, who have criticized the power of large tech companies. Rhee managed the firm's Washington, DC, office, and Dunn co-chaired its litigation department.

"It has been an honor to work alongside such talented lawyers and to call so many of you our friends," their departing email said. "We hope to continue to collaborate with all of you in the years to come and are incredibly grateful for your warm and generous partnership."

Paul Weiss's chair, Brad Karp, said in a statement, "We are grateful to Bill, Jeannie, Jessica, and Karen for their many contributions to the firm. We wish them well in their future endeavors."

The departures come several months after the Trump administration began targeting Big Law firms with punitive executive actions. Among them was Paul Weiss, which faced an executive order that revoked the security clearances of the firm's attorneys and ordered a review of its government contracts.

On March 20, Trump announced on Truth Social that he would drop the executive order against Paul Weiss after negotiating a deal that would require the firm to end any diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in its hiring practices and contribute $40 million of pro bono legal services to causes aligned with the administration's priorities, such as veterans affairs issues and the administration's antisemitism task force.

Business Insider previously reported that the copy of the deal shared internally among Paul Weiss partners omitted language regarding DEI that was present in the president's announcement.

Other firms that chose to negotiate with Trump also saw high-profile departures from partners and associates concerned with their firms' decisions not to challenge the administration.

Wilkie Farr lost its longest-serving lawyer in April after Joseph Baio, a partner who'd worked there for 47 years, resigned over the firm's preemptive deal with Trump, The New York Times reported.

Another firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, made a preemptive deal with the Trump administration in late March to avoid a similar executive order against it. The decision led to a series of public resignations from several Skadden associates, including Rachel Cohen and Brenna Frey.

Cohen told Business Insider she had not been in touch with the attorneys who had resigned from Paul Weiss on Friday.

Us Explains Tom Cruise’s Viral Popcorn Meme

23 May 2025 at 12:14

Tom Cruise recently set the internet ablaze not for his epic stunt skills but because of his affinity for popcorn.

Cruise got the internet’s attention when he noticed a fan in the front row for a screening of his new movie, Mission: Impossible β€” The Final Reckoning, was tragically out of the beloved movie snack.

β€œYou ate all your popcorn already!” Cruise chided the moviegoer before encouraging them to β€œgo get some more.”

After that clip made waves online, another fan took to social media to weigh in on Cruise’s obsession with popcorn.

Tom Cruise Plans to Make Movies Into His 100s: 'I Will Never Stop'

β€œTo add onto the Tom/popcorn lore: I need y’all to realize THIS is how he eats popcorn,” the social media user captioned a video of Cruise enthusiastically eating popcorn during a 2018 screening of Mission: Impossible β€” Fallout.

While hanging out on the side of the theater, Cruise went to town on a bucket of popcorn, shoving pieces into his mouth and occasionally dropping some to the floor. After the clip resurfaced, many fans took to the comments section to share their thoughts on how Cruise consumes his go-to snack.

In addition to the discourse, more instances of Cruise and popcorn emerged online, including a 2023 promotional video for Mission: Impossible β€” Dead Reckoning Part One.

β€œI love my popcorn. Movies. Popcorn,” Cruise said as he ate from a large bucket of the snack on a leather sofa. β€œFour cities. Four screenings. We had so much fun at the first fan screenings for Mission: Impossible! Thank you to everyone who came out.”

Cruise attended a fan screening for his new movie Mission: Impossible β€” The Final Reckoning. Writer Todd Spence shared a clip online of Cruise chatting with an unnamed fan about popcorn. Another fan, who goes by the username @seifwtf, added more to the popcorn lore online.

The Gist

While at the May 2025 screening at BFI IMAX in London, an unnamed fan was in the audience with an empty bucket of popcorn. Before taking the stage, Cruise saw the fan in the audience and pointed out he needed to get some more popcorn before the movie started.

After that interaction got shared online, @seifwtf shared a throwback clip of Cruise chowing down on popcorn during a screening of Mission: Impossible β€” Fallout in 2018.

Why It’s a Big Deal

Spence’s post quickly went viral, and other instances of Cruise eating popcorn resurfaced, causing more fanfare. During a later appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Cruise was asked by Darius Butler whether he really eats popcorn that way. Cruise owned his love for the ultimate movie snack.

β€œMan, I’m eating popcorn,” Cruise said as he laughed. β€œThey know when I’m going to these movies that I’m watching, I’m eating popcorn.”

What People Are Saying

The clip took the internet by storm, and fans didn’t hold back their thoughts by providing hysterical commentary.

β€œThis is how my dad eats popcorn,” one user commented, while another added, β€œTom Cruise eating popcorn like he an uncle with a handful of peanuts.”

Butler, for his part, also shared his reaction to Cruise himself.

β€œI’ve never seen anyone eat popcorn [like] this,” Butler said to the actor. β€œAre you actually eating popcorn or are you full of s*** right here, TC? I’ve got to know.”

Other fans have pointed out that Cruise’s love of popcorn is just one manifestation of his unshakeable love for the experience of watching movies in a theater. The popcorn thing is a joke, but it’s also proof that no one in Hollywood is as happy making movies and watching them as he is. As the man himself told The Hollywood Reporter: β€œI’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s.”

What We’re Saying

Cruise clearly loves popcorn just as much as he loves doing his own stunts.

What’s Next

Cruise will most likely continue to enjoy his favorite movie snack. Who knows β€” maybe a popcorn-themed partnership could be in his future!

Machine Gun Kelly Shares Rare Glimpse Inside Home as Infant Daughter Sleeps

23 May 2025 at 12:13

Machine Gun Kelly gave a rare glimpse into his life as he coparents his two-month-old daughter with ex Megan Fox.

MGK (real name Colson Baker) shared an Instagram video on Friday, May 23, of himself reacting to discovering that he is on Spotify’s New Music Friday cover. In the video, the musician, 35, is seated in a kitchen and can be seen jumping for joy when he opens his Spotify app.

He then excitedly FaceTimes his 15-year-old daughter, Casie, whom he shares with ex-girlfriend Emma Cannon. (Fox, for her part, also shares sons Noah, 12, Bodhi, 11, and Journey, 8, with ex Brian Austin Green.)

β€œYou’re sister’s asleep so I can’t scream but I want to scream so loud,” he tells her.

Though Kelly did not confirm he was in Fox’s kitchen, the rapper has been staying with his ex-fiancΓ©e several nights a week to help out with their baby, who lives full-time with the Transformers actress. Eagle-eyed commenters noted what appeared to be a breast pump in the background of the clip and a few claim they were able to hear Fox’s laugh off camera.

The kitchen itself was busy, with a cluttered countertop and well-stocked pantry slightly ajar behind MGK. He was seated at a round table and a staircase was visible through the doorway to his left.

While Fox has been impressed with how Kelly has supported her with the baby, a source exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month that the two are not about to rekindle their relationship.

β€œMegan thinks MGK has stepped up and is being a good dad but doesn’t think they have a future together romantically,” the insider said. β€œMegan is in heaven with her baby girl and is really focused on being a mom right now.”

MGK gave fans a peek at the pair’s daughter on Thursday, May 22, via an Instagram carousel that he captioned, β€œStop what you’re doing these pictures are v important.”

In one of the photos, he had the baby strapped to his chest in a baby carrier. The baby was visible mostly in a car’s reflection and her face is hidden.

The photo came one day after Fox revealed via Instagram that her pregnancy was β€œunplanned.” She shared the revelation in a video via her Instagram Stories that teased her cameo on the new Hulu comedy Overcompensating.

β€œ38 years old six weeks pregnant (unplanned but a happy surprise),” she captioned the video. β€œPlease stop listening to the patriarchy. Women are eternal light beings.”

She added, β€œWe do not have an expiration date. Don’t let them rob you of your power.”

Danica Patrick reflects on 'emotionally abusive' relationship with Aaron Rodgers: 'wore me down to nothing'

Former NASCAR driver Danica Patrick shared the agony of her relationship and breakup with NFL star Aaron Rodgers, during an appearance on the Sage Steele Show.Β

"The breakup with Aaron in 2020, because it was sudden," Patrick said when asked what was the most painful experience.Β

"It felt like it was my life. So when you live with somebody, it’s your whole life… And because the nature of the relationship was emotionally abusive, so that wore me down to nothing."Β

Patrick claims that Rogers "leaves a trail of blood."

"Someone that you know, people could never imagine that I would lack any confidence, or belief in the simple things about who I am. Everything was torn to bits. He leaves a trail of blood. I don’t think I’m saying too much earth-shattering stuff after we β€” there’s been enough out there," Patrick said.Β

"But it gave me the greatest gift, which is myself. It gave me the greatest gift of how much I needed to show up for myself and take care of myself."

Rodgers and Patrick went public with their relationship in January 2018 after first meeting at the ESPY Awards in 2012.Β

FORMER NASCAR DRIVER DANICA PATRICK ANNOUNCES PIVOT TO TENNIS

At the time,Β a rep for the "Pretty Intense" podcast host and entrepreneurΒ confirmed to Fox NewsΒ that the pair were an item.Β

Meanwhile, PatrickΒ toldΒ The Associated PressΒ that she and Rodgers first crossed paths in 2012 at The ESPY Awards.

"I told him a long time ago I’d always root for him as a player," she recalled to the outlet.Β "Now I am probably going to cheer for the whole team. Take out the word β€˜probably.’ Now I’m going to cheer for the whole team."

In November 2019, the pair appeared to be going strong, with Patrick even jokingΒ on "The Jenny McCarthy Show" about a proposal.

When asked when she’d get married, Patrick jokingly responded, "Um, [tomorrow] β€” wait, no, what?"

Back in August 2017, Rodgers opened up to ESPN, explaining it’s not always easy dating when all eyes are on you.

"When you are living out a relationship in the public eye, it’s definitely… it’s difficult," he said. "It has some extra constraints because you have other opinions about your relationship, how it affects your work and, you know, just some inappropriate connections… There’s some horrible media outlets that… you say something or do something, where there’s a story, and they just go with it and run with it."

The couple then confirmed their breakup in July 2020.Β

Patrick later opened up on the breakup during an appearance on National Geographic's "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" and told the survivalist that she learned a ton about herself during the public breakup.

"I think we learn the most about ourselves through relationships, but there's nothing like heartbreak to really throw you in the deep end of that," Patrick said, according to Yahoo! Entertainment. "But I've learned a lot and as broken open as I was on the sad end, I have felt so much joy in so many more instances and so many more unlikely places than I ever have, so it's like my heart got broken open to both ends of the spectrum."

Katie Couric Reacts to Death of Sheinelle Jones' Husband, Uche Ojeh

23 May 2025 at 11:40

Katie Couric is sending her love to a member of her Today show family.

The former coanchor of the NBC morning show took to Instagram on Friday, May 23, to pay tribute to Sheinelle Jones’ husband, Uche Ojeh, after his unexpected death at age 45. β€œSending so much love, support and sympathy to @sheinelle_o following the loss of her beloved husband Uche after a valiant struggle with glioblastoma,” she wrote alongside a photo of the couple.

Couric, 68, continued, β€œMy heart is breaking for her and their three children. Please hold them in your hearts. Love you Sheinelle πŸ’”.”

Couric left her role as Today’s coanchor in 2006, eight years before Jones, 47, joined the series as a Weekend Today cohost. Jones has served as a cohost of the show’s third hour alongside Al Roker, Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer since 2019.

Stars Rally Around Sheinelle Jones After Death of Husband Uche Ojeh

Jones has been absent from Today since December 2024. In January, she clarified via Instagram that she was β€œtaking time to deal with a family health matter.” During Friday’s Today broadcast, Savannah Guthrie broke the news that Ojeh had died after a private battle with the brain cancer glioblastoma.

β€œThere are no words for the pain that we feel for Sheinelle and their three young children. Uche was an incredible person. We all loved him,” Guthrie, 53, tearfully announced.

The show aired a video package revisiting the couple’s biggest moments, from falling in love as students at Northwestern University to their 2007 wedding to becoming parents to their three kids β€” son Kayin, 15, and twins Clara and Uche, 12.

β€œWe just want to say Sheinelle, Kayin, little Uche and Clara, the Ojeh family, we are with you. We love you,” Guthrie added. β€œYou are our family, and we are just sending all of our love to you right now.”

Jones broke her silence on Ojeh’s death by sharing her colleagues’ on-air tributes via Instagram. β€œThank you, for all of your love and support ❀,” she wrote alongside the clip on Friday.

Couric went through a similar experience as Jones when she lost her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer at age 42 in 1998. The spouses, who wed in 1989, shared daughters Ellie, 33, and Carrie, 29. She found new love with her husband, John Molner, whom she wed in 2014.

Couric became a grandmother in March 2024 with the birth of Ellie and her husband Mark Dobrosky’s son, John. Her grandson was named after Jay, whose full name was John Paul Monahan.

Earlier this year, Couric exclusively told Us Weekly that her husband’s legacy lives on through their kids and baby John. β€œNow every time I see Baby Jay, I think of my Jay and Ellie and Carrie’s Jay,” she shared in March while promoting the Cologuard Classic by Exact Sciences golf tournament to help raise colon cancer awareness.

β€œI always think of how proud he would be of them,” she added. β€œSo, we think about him a lot.”
