Though her sleeveless dress was classic, it was also overly simple. Statement jewels could have easily enhanced the look.

She also draped a dark leather jacket around her arms, which was much more casual than the rest of her outfit.

She wore a crystal-covered dress that looked like it was molded to her body with its form-fitting design.

Its strapless, snake-print bodice was corseted with a deep plunge down the middle, and its floor-length skirt was pink and embellished with countless sparkles.

The Thai actor completed her look with a large diamond necklace crafted in the shape of leaves.

Elie Saab designed the model's off-the-shoulder gown. It had a deep V-neckline, see-through stripes, and all-over sparkles in blue and purple.

Some of those details might have worked on their own. But together, especially with the gown's mermaid shape, its accents made it look more theatrical than glamorous.

Cruise attended a promotional event for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" at Cannes.

In doing so, he became one of the best-dressed men at the festival so far this year.

He wore a fitted, textured knit polo and matching trousers with sharp pleats. The outfit was understated and vibrant on its own, while his brown dress shoes and dark sunglasses gave it an edge.

When Berry walked onto the Cannes red carpet, she wore a shapeless Jacquemus gown with a black-and-white stripe print.

She later told reporters that she'd originally planned to wear an "amazing dress" from Gaurav Gupta, but had to find a new look when Cannes announced a new dress code that prohibits voluminous gowns with long trains the day before the festival began.

Unfortunately for Berry, the bold dress she chose was so flowy and oversize that it seemed to wear her, when it should have been the other way around.

The ensemble was elegant and fit Fontana perfectly.

Zuckerberg appeared at an "Acquired" podcast event on September 10, 2024. While onstage, he was photographed wearing another flashy watch: a DB25 Starry Varius from the Swiss watch brand De Bethune.

He seemed to be wearing its rose-gold model, which can cost over $80,000 from independent watch sellers. As watch specialist Bryan Li previously told Business Insider, only 20 of the watches are made annually.

Other variants — like one made from titanium and another encrusted with 273 diamonds — can cost between $75,000 and $127,000.

There's also the Aérolite version of the watch, which features a dial made from a meteorite and usually costs $260,000.

This De Bethune piece — and Zuckerberg's Patek Philippe watch — showed a significant shift in the Facebook founder's style, taking his outfits from basic to luxe almost overnight.

He was photographed wearing a chunky silver watch onstage at the 2024 Meta Connect conference. It appears to have been a variant of a watch from the Swiss brand F.P. Journe's Souveraine collection.

The specific one Zuckerberg wore featured a thick band and large black buttons on its side. Sotheby's listed what appears to be the same watch for auction in March, and said it was made entirely from aluminum.

The auction company also said the watch style was produced between 2011 and 2014. The piece was estimated to sell for between $30,000 and $54,000, though it's unclear what it actually sold for.

The same watch in a darker gray colorway is now available to purchase online for $135,000.

On January 8, Zuckerberg posted a video to announce the end of Meta's fact-checking partnerships in the US. In the clip, he's seen wearing a Greubel Forsey watch that retails for over $900,000.

According to the brand's website, the watch is assembled entirely by hand, and only two or three are crafted each year. It's made with white gold and contains 281 pieces.

Michel Nydegger, the CEO of Greubel Forsey, told Bloomberg at the time that Zuckerberg showed "true appreciation for the most traditional approach to fine watchmaking" by wearing the piece.

Zuckerberg posted a handful of photos and videos from the mixed martial arts event, which showed a thick gold watch on his wrist.

BI spoke with four watch experts at the time, who all said the timepiece was likely a yellow-gold Rolex Daytona Le Mans.

Though Rolex has never confirmed how many exist, collectors and sellers say the watch style is rare.

That's partially why it had a resale value of up to $300,000, as Ng Yong Shen, a vice president at the Dubai-based secondhand retailer Re-Loved Luxury, told BI.

In April, Zuckerberg appeared on The Colin and Samir Show wearing a white timepiece with a vibrant blue face.

Watch fanatics quickly pointed it out as the GA2100WS-7A from Casio's G-Shock line. Made from resin and mineral glass, the watch retails for $120.

The outfit fit the theme, but felt unimaginative.

Billionaire designer Tory Burch wore a simple white maxi dress to this year's gala. She layered it with black beaded chains, which gave the outfit a spiderweb-esque look.

She kept the rest of the outfit simple with a black and white handbag and diamond earrings.

The outfit did not lean into the "tailored" theme too heavily.

Australian billionaire businessman Anthony Pratt was a sight to behold, standing out from the mass of black and white-clad crowd in his funky bright green suit.

We expected more from Pharrell Williams, who was a co-chair on Monday night.

It's never a dull moment when Kim Kardashian arrives at the Met Gala, but this year, she didn't make much of a splash in her all-black ensemble.

Hawke looked pretty as she walked the red carpet in a custom Prada look. However, her pink, stapless dress and sheer, tan cape didn't seem inspired by menswear or Black dandyism.

You couldn't miss Anderson as she walked the red carpet in a crystal-covered gown from Tory Burch. It was silver, long-sleeved, and wide in shape. She also wore her hair in a new blonde bob.

Though the outfit was fun and a fashion risk for Anderson, it mostly looked out of her comfort zone.

Heidi Klum may be the queen of Halloween, but she played it too safe on fashion's biggest night.

The supermodel wore a simple, sleeveless black dress with a flowing train to the Met Gala. The ensemble could have benefited from some flashy accessories or a bold jacket.

James attended the Met Gala in her husband LeBron James' stead, as the honorary co-chair pulled out of the event due to a knee injury.

Her mermaid style Thom Browne gown was on-theme, with its suit-jacket bodice and pinstripe pattern.

However, the corset detailing on the bodice didn't look well-tailored to James' body. Some small adjustments to the bodice would have made this a standout look.

While we loved the silver color and sheen of Lorde's Thom Browne outfit — which included a bandeau that seemed to defy gravity — we thought the skirt style was a bit outdated.

We think Lorde's look would have had a bit more edge if she had paired her bandeau with tailored pants instead.

Joe Burrow made his Met Gala debut on Monday, but his baggy suit just didn't look right for a night celebrating impeccable tailoring.

His shirt's open collar and creased pants also detracted from the overall ensemble, and his baby-blue Gucci sneakers didn't seem to coordinate with the color scheme.

We wish the Bengals star had opted for something a bit sharper.

Wales Bonner created Apollo's suit, which included a cropped jacket, straight trousers, and a sparkling leopard-print shirt.

Palmer's black-and-white ensemble took inspiration from Dorothy Dandridge and was crafted by Vera Wang. The designer made her a top with suit lapels acting as halter straps, a structured bodice, and large pieces of fabric that flowed over her hips.

The look also included black trousers, a feathered headpiece, and open-toed heels.

At first glance, the football star's Burberry suit was simple. But the black three-piece set actually had beaded shoulders that shone in the light. His tie was accessorized with a diamond pin, and his hat also added an old-school touch that matched the night's theme.

Pharrell Williams designed Carpenter's pantless Louis Vuitton look, which featured a maroon bodysuit and a matching, cropped jacket with gold buttons and collar detailing.

Her platform heels were maroon, too.

Suki Waterhouse leaned into the menswear side of the Met Gala theme, as the bodice of her black Michael Kors dress was designed to look like a suit jacket. It contrasted with the floor-length skirt, which had a thigh-high slit, and open back.

Golding's Ozwald Boateng suit offered a fun play on the "Tailored For You" dress code, as the jacket, pants, and vest were gold, but the black shirt he wore with the look ensured the effect wasn't over the top.

Coach designed the actor and musician's black-and-white minidress. It was crafted in the shape of a blazer with exaggerated hips and worn over a sparkling silver bustier. She completed the look with platform heels and a mesh headpiece.

Even among the night's best-dressed stars, Turner-Smith stood out. She wore a custom Burberry catsuit with a subtle print beneath a long leather coat. Both pieces were burgundy in color, as were her top hat, heels, and lipstick.

Doechii's head-to-toe Louis Vuitton ensemble took a more playful approach to the Met Gala, as she paired a jacket patterned with the LV logo in white and gray with checked shorts in the same color.

The outfit exposed her maroon socks and shoes, matching the ascot she wore around her neck.

Edebiri wore a black leather jacket atop the look that had ribbons of fabric floating down the sleeves like a train and a gold brooch on the lapel.

Ross had one of the biggest fashion moments of the night in her custom Eleven Sixteen look. It was comprised of a sparkle-covered dress, a large white hat, and a massive feather-lined cape embroidered with the names of her family members.

Dressed by Thom Browne, Tillman wore a classic dandy look. His outfit included pinstripe pants, a velvet suit jacket with long tails, and a bow tie attached to his white shirt.

Zendaya made her annual Met Gala appearance in a white suit and matching hat from Louis Vuitton, designed by Pharrell. Her stylist Law Roach said on Instagram that the look was inspired by Bianca Jagger in the 1970s.

Powers' Boss suit played with pattern and shape, as it paired plaid, wide-legged trousers with a cropped black jacket.

He wore a striped suit and a polka dot tie, completing the playful ensemble with brooches on his lapel, a pocket square, and chain detailing across his blouse.

Biles' blue Harbison Studio dress felt like a modern take on dandyism, with its collar detailing, structured silhouette, and plethora of embellishments adorning the fabric.

Nyong'o arrived at the Met Gala in a teal Chanel suit. A semi-sheer cape was attached to her double-breasted jacket, and she also wore a flower on her lapel and a hat.

The actor stood out in a printed, colorful suit with jewel embellishments from Miu Miu. She wore the custom pieces over a black-and-white checkered shirt and a yellow ruffled tie.

The viral creator's gray pinstripe suit offered a classic silhouette, as did his hat and shoes. But an assortment of pocket watches adorned Lame's vest, and he wore a trench coat on only one shoulder, almost as if it was put on in a rush, evoking the idea of time with his ensemble.

Taylor wore a statement cape embellished with roses and crystal pins, a pinstripe suit, a diamond necklace over her corset, and a cane held in her gloved hands. Her ensemble was custom-made by Marc Jacobs.

Domingo's custom Valentino ensemble, with its ornate blue cape, paid tribute to André Leon Talley. He removed it, revealing a gray, black, and white suit with contrasting textures and an oversize flower on the lapel.

Hamilton sported a custom Wales Bonner suit in a cream shade, a matching hat, and an assortment of Briony Raymond jewelry crafted with rubies.

But in typical Kardashian fashion, the outfit wasn't without controversy.

The TV star and businesswoman, who Forbes estimates is worth $1.7 billion, revealed she took corset breathing lessons to wear it and didn't go to the bathroom during the event.

The Amazon founder, who has an estimated $204 billion fortune, walked the red carpet that year in a classic Tom Ford tuxedo. It featured a black jacket with satin lapels, straight trousers, a white button-up shirt, and a black bow tie.

The suit was sharp and elegant but failed to embody the out-of-the-box, playful styles of camp fashion.

It was especially apparent when the businessman stood next to stars like Kendall Jenner and Jared Leto, who wore dramatic, almost surreal pieces.

The musician and Fenty makeup mogul, who is worth $1.4 billion, stepped onto the carpet in a beaded set designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

It consisted of a massive coat that matched its pearl-encrusted minidress, a wrap skirt with pleats, and a pointed headdress that resembled those worn by the Pope.

The designer pieces were not only works of art but also perfectly complemented the night's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

The Tesla CEO has an estimated fortune of $386 billion, so it would have made sense to see him walk the Met Gala red carpet in an extravagant designer outfit.

But instead, he sported an understated cream-colored blazer over a white top with a black neckline. He also wore plain trousers and shining dress shoes.

There was one interesting feature of his outfit: the phrase "novus ordo seclorum," which translates from Latin to "new world order," written across the back of his jacket.

But because it was stitched in white, the words were barely noticeable.

Guests of the 2023 Met Gala were instructed to dress "in honor of Karl" — Karl Lagerfeld, the longtime fashion creative who worked for Fendi, Balmain, Chloé, and most famously, Chanel, before his death in 2019.

And Gebbia did just that. Mirroring Lagerfeld's signature black-and-white aesthetic, the Airbnb cofounder — who Forbes estimates is worth $7.9 billion — sported a black tuxedo embellished from top to bottom with crystal flowers.

The ensemble stood out from other menswear on the red carpet and was the ideal complement to Isabelle Boemeke's black Bode dress.

Witzøe, whose net worth is around $3.2 billion, is one of the world's youngest billionaires and one of the most stylish.

But the black-and-white striped Palomo suit he wore to the 2023 Met Gala wasn't his best fashion choice. Its structured jacket had a unique bodice that bubbled at the hips.

But because it was paired with pants that were just a bit too long, the outfit looked more clunky than stylish.

The 2014 Met Gala honored designer Charles James and his impact on women's fashion. So it made sense that year for the rapper and businessman, whose net worth is $2.5 billion, to take a step back with his look.

He wore black dress pants, shining shoes, and a white jacket that was the exact same shade as his undershirt. He completed the outfit with a black bow tie.

Not only was his suit sharp, but it also allowed Beyoncé to shine in her Givenchy gown.

The golf legend is now a billionaire — according to Forbes, his net worth is $1.3 billion as of May 2024. But years before reaching that status, he walked the Met Gala red carpet with his then-girlfriend and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn.

Unfortunately, the outfit he wore that year hasn't stood the test of time. Plain suits aren't exactly memorable when it comes to Met Gala fashion, and Wood's version almost looked too big on him.

A similar suit in a different color and with better tailoring could have made all the difference.

Although repeat Met Gala attendees make up much of the red carpet, many celebrities are coming to their first-ever Met Gala in 2025.

The Eagles' Saquon Barkley made his Met debut on Monday, as did Colman Domingo's husband, Raúl Domingo. Pianist Gina Alice Redlinger and model Christian Latchman are also attending their first Met Gala this year.

Everyone knew Colman Domingo was going to bring it to the Met Gala, and the Oscar-nominated actor lived up to the hype on Monday night.

Domingo first arrived on the Met Gala steps in a positively regal blue Valentino cape with a shimmering gold breastplate — an outfit that would've made the late style icon and OG dandy André Leon Talley extremely proud.

But that wasn't all Domingo had up his sleeve. The "Sing Sing" star revealed there was a perfectly tailored suit underneath, complete with a polka-dot tie and a flower.

Anna Wintour arrived for fashion's biggest night in head-to-toe pastels.

She sported a baby-blue silk shift dress embroidered with flowers, which coordinated well with the blue carpet covered in daffodils.

Wintour paired her ensemble with a matching blue floor-length coat and a brooch that sparkled from its lapel. She styled her signature bob to perfection, although her usual pair of sunglasses were MIA.

The Vogue editor-in-chief first co-chaired the Met Gala in 1995 and has been at its helm ever since. Under her influence, the gala has become a star-studded spectacle and the cost of a ticket has skyrocketed from around $2,000 to $75,000.

Taylor, one of the hosts of Vogue's livestream for the evening, arrived at the gala with the costume designer Ruth Carter.

Her ensemble featured all the hallmarks of dandyism, from a pinstripe suit to a cane and statement hat, and additions like platform shoes and floral brooches that felt uniquely her.

Taylor's whole look was a standout, but her statement cape was the star of the outfit. It trailed behind her dramatically and was embroidered with "Harlem Rose," referencing her 2018 song "A Rose in Harlem."

James announced on X on Monday that he would be unable to attend because of a knee injury.

"Hate to miss an historical event," he wrote, adding that his wife, Savannah James, will still be attending. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"

It would have been the basketball star's first Met Gala appearance.

There's much more to the Met Gala than a flashy red carpet.

Inside, attendees first experience a cocktail hour, where they can walk through the museum, see the newest fashion exhibit, and mingle with other stars. They're later seated for a formal dinner, from which they can see the evening's stage show. In the past, musicians including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga have performed. Fingers crossed for a Doechii performance this year.

Of course, the Met Gala isn't open to just anyone. It costs $75,000 for a single ticket and $350,000 for a table. The latter are often purchased by fashion designers, who dress and bring celebrities as guests.

Rihanna's outfits for the 10 Met Galas she has attended to date have become legendary over the years.

She reached icon status at the 2015 Met Gala with the yellow Guo Pei gown she wore. Rihanna also stole the show when she co-chaired the gala in 2018, wearing a Margiela ensemble inspired by the pope.

Rihanna skipped the 2024 gala, but we're hopeful she'll be back this year since her partner, ASAP Rocky, is a co-chair. Her outfit will surely make a splash if she walks the Met Gala red carpet again.

This year's co-hosts and committee members are all especially stylish.

We can expect Doechii to have a standout moment, Colman Domingo could easily be the night's best-dressed star, and Tyla might turn heads for the second year in a row.

We're also keeping an eye out for Ayo Edebiri, who looked effortlessly chic in a powder-blue Chanel skirt suit in Vogue's "'Superfine' and Dandy: Iconic Creatives" spread ahead of the gala.

While the rest of the guest list is under wraps, we're hopeful stars like Zendaya, Greta Lee, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez will return to the Met, as they wore some of the most eye-catching looks at the 2024 Met Gala.

It's also common for celebrity couples to make red-carpet debuts at the Met Gala, so we'll be looking out for A-listers walking hand in hand up the steps.

Vogue's editor in chief first chaired the Met Gala in 1995, and in the 30 years she's been spearheading it, Wintour has become synonymous with the event itself.

She decides who earns a coveted spot on the Met Gala's guest list. The list of celebrities who have never attended a Met Gala has some surprising names.

It was also rumored that she approved the outfits of everyone who attended, though she shut that down in an interview with "Good Morning America" ahead of the 2025 event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she told Michael Strahan. "Some, no idea."

Numerous pre-gala festivities took place over the weekend to kick off the 2025 Met Gala. Some retailers like Moda Operandi hosted parties, while figures like Anna Wintour held small dinners.

The 2025 Met Gala co-chairs — Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and ASAP Rocky — are all known for their bold approaches to menswear.

Wintour has never made the co-chairs' exact responsibilities public, but they're said to help plan the event's dress code and dinner. They also promote the event, and alongside the Met Gala's committee members, they are usually the first people to arrive on the event's red carpet.

The 2025 Met Gala committee is full of A-list stars, including Tyla, Ayo Edebiri, and Simone Biles.

This year's Met Gala is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

Vogue reported that the theme was inspired by Black dandyism, menswear, and "the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora."

Black dandyism, specifically, is a style and movement that's been embraced by Black men since the 18th century. It typically involves sharp dressing — think tailored suits, hats, and canes — to assert individuality, culture, and equality.

Met Gala guests have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored For You," though it's open to interpretation. Still, Vogue said we can expect to see a surplus of suits, canes, pocket squares, and other pieces related to dandyism.

This year will also mark the second time the Costume Institute exhibit is focused on menswear. The museum previously hosted the "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" display between November 2003 and February 2004.

Versace designed the actor's sleeveless slip, which was covered from top to bottom in translucent sequins. The dress also had a cowl neckline and the brand's signature hardware in silver across each strap.

She wore it with black patent-leather kitten heels, a micro purse in black, and small diamond stud earrings.

Also in Versace, Hathaway wore a white button-down blouse, a loose black blazer with a gold logo embellishment at its pocket, and straight-leg trousers.

Her party look was cool and chic on its own, but it became more feminine thanks to her choice of accessories.

The actor carried a sparkling gold purse, sported large sunglasses on her face, and donned heeled sandals with beaded detailing.

Her black Versace number had long sleeves, a deep V-neckline, crystal buttons, and an above-the-knee skirt.

The garment gave a feminine edge to a classic menswear piece.

It was her silver accents, however, that really stole the show. To complete her look, she added thick sunglasses, silver sandals with bow straps, and a shimmering purse with ring handles.

Getty wore a yellow Versace minidress with long sleeves, an all-over shell print, and a plunging neckline that revealed the middle section of her torso. One of Versace's signature gold safety pins held the garment together.

She completed the look with classic accessories, including black pumps, a crystal anklet with a cross charm, a gold purse, and hoop earrings.

For the Moda Operandi party, the "Espresso" singer stepped out in a sleeveless Versace dress that hugged her body and shimmered in the light.

It had sheer sequins all over its baby-blue fabric, a gold safety pin that pulled it together at the hips, and a thigh-high slit in its skirt. For shoes, Carpenter wore her signature platforms in the form of tan sandals.

The fashion designer wore one of the brightest looks of the night: a hot-pink suit over a yellow blouse printed with shell images.

She also wore platform Versace heels in the same pink shade, dangling crystal earrings, and rectangular sunglasses with cherry-red frames.

Domingo attended pre-Met Gala events throughout the weekend, and his cream suit from Eleven Sixteen for Wayman + Micah's party spoke directly to the 2025 Met Gala theme.

The bold tailoring of his cream suit represented Black dandyism, while the thick material and checked pattern made it feel modern. Domingo's tie coordinated with the suit, and his white shoes completed the outfit effortlessly.

On Sunday, Henson also played with the silhouette of a suit, arriving at the LaQuan Smith Met Gala party in a fitted jacket and matching wide-legged trousers.

The jacket was open on Henson's chest, mirroring the pointed hemline that cinched her waist. Sparkles covered the entire outfit, giving it a glitzy edge.

Williams is also a Met Gala co-chair this year, and he arrived at the dinner that Wintour hosts the night before the event in a mix of high- and low-fashion garments.

He paired a green blouse and a brown sweatshirt with khaki trousers and a Louis Vuitton trench coat. His coat matched his bag, and Williams added sunglasses and a yellow cap to the look.

The ensemble effortlessly blended styles, perhaps offering a clue as to how Williams might be approaching his Met Gala look.

Erivo's Saint Laurent suit was double-breasted, and the coordinating pants flared wide. Her blouse underneath featured a colorful pattern of stripes, bringing out the purple hue of her tie.

Tinted sunglasses and Christian Louboutin shoes completed the look.

Page's Brioni suit was bright blue and had a classic pinstripe pattern, which the actor juxtaposed with a more relaxed pink T-shirt.

Topshop designed her strapless dress, which hugged her body up top and extended into a wider skirt at the bottom. The design was chic and elegant, but not daring.

Jenner also carried a sparkling clutch, wore a diamond necklace, and paired minimal makeup with a swept-back hairstyle.

The off-the-shoulder jumpsuit had long pant legs that extended into short trains at the bottom, and a gauzy top with see-through sleeves.

To complement the outfit, she added a long ponytail, diamond earrings, and glamorous makeup.

Atelier Versace designed her halter dress. It had two waist cutouts, a larger one across her back, and a short slit in the back of its skirt.

Not only did the sparkling dress have open panels on each side of her chest — which were held together with crisscross straps — but its thin fabric was also semi-sheer.

The Calvin Klein Collection crafted the mock-neck garment.

To stay in line with the "Garden of Time" dress code, Jenner wore an archival Givenchy gown made by Alexander McQueen in 1999.

It had a deep V-neckline embellished with brown trim and an arrow-shaped panel of mesh at her hips that extended even farther at her backside.

The sparkling black gown was also semi-sheer, especially across its floor-length skirt.

Designed by Prada, Jenner's all-black look included a sheer, netted crop top and a voluminous skirt decorated with layers of ruching.

Jenner also bleached her eyebrows for the event, adding more edge to her already-sharp look.

She wore an orange, sleeveless dress that was custom-made for her by Versace. Its see-through fabric was decorated with beaded fringe, and its skirt had layers of orange feathers that reached the floor.

Of course, the sheer detailing made her dress stand out on the red carpet, but so did its giant, feathered neckpiece that wrapped around her shoulders and reached her wrist.

Both the gown's see-through mesh and matching bodysuit complemented her skin tone, creating the illusion that she was wearing only rows of diamonds.

On Instagram, the 818 tequila founder said the Givenchy design was inspired by another iconic gown: the one Audrey Hepburn wore in "My Fair Lady."

The black dress had a slit in the middle of its see-through bodice, and its wrapped design created a thigh-high slit in its skirt.

But it was even more daring from the back. When Jenner turned around, you could see that her gown was backless and revealed a thong she wore underneath.

Jennifer Lopez's Met Gala outfits have gotten bolder since her 2008 appearance.

Alberta Ferretti designed Lopez's dress that year. Its single strap was decorated with a crystal appliqué extending across its neckline. The embellishment dated the gown, while its tiered fabric made it look simple instead of luxurious.

A different dress in the same teal shade would have worked better for the musician.

Valentino created the hot-pink number Paltrow wore that year. It had long sleeves, a see-through stripe of mesh above the chest, and a wide skirt that circled around her.

Though its shock of color was fun, the gown's simple, shapeless design left something to be desired.

Paltrow also wore minimal makeup, delicate jewelry, and her hair in a casual ponytail — but it was all too simple to suit her dramatic dress.

A bolder beauty look, a high bun, or statement earrings and rings could have improved the outfit.

The "Twilight" star walked the 2013 red carpet in a Stella McCartney jumpsuit. The maroon piece was long-sleeved and crafted with sheer lace sections from top to bottom.

The shiny fabric was also puffed at the hips, creating an exaggerated effect.

Though Stewart looked sharp in her runway-ready outfit, it didn't match the year's "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" theme. The actor also has a naturally edgy style, so not displaying it in full force was a missed opportunity.

The Marvel actor sparkled her way down the red carpet that year.

She wore a Prada ensemble that included a blue-and-gold tank top with sequins arranged in various patterns, straight-legged pants with even more sequins, and classic black pumps.

It's tough to go wrong with all-over sparkles, but the mismatched shapes they were styled in clashed.

Her golden outfit also had a regal flair, which didn't work with her futuristic bun hairstyle.

Many of Kim Kardashian's Met Gala looks have been iconic. Unfortunately, the blue Lanvin gown she sported in 2014 wasn't one of them.

Designed by Alber Elbaz, the strapless dress had black satin lining, a matching belt, pockets at the hips, and a thigh-high slit.

She wore the piece with strappy sandals, dangling earrings, a wavy hairstyle, and neutral makeup.

Though Kardashian looked pretty, her overall outfit was dull and forgettable.

Katy Perry was made to wear Moschino — and she has at most Met Galas she's attended over the past decade.

Her 2015 selection from the brand, though, missed the mark. She wore a black, strapless dress with a deep sweetheart neckline, a long bodice, and a peplum band above a full skirt.

The latter piece was especially eye-catching, as it was decorated with a colorful print that looked like the dress had been covered in graffiti. She also carried a purse shaped like a can of spray paint.

Because the event was meant to honor Chinese culture and fashion, it didn't make sense for her to wear the quirky ensemble that night.

The actor arrived at the Met Gala in a custom H&M dress. The black gown was innocuous, with its one-shoulder design and colorful fabric ribbons on one side.

However, Parker accessorized the gown with a red headpiece designed by Philip Treacy that many thought reinforced racist stereotypes about Asian women.

Parker never addressed the criticism publicly.

Louis Vuitton designed her black-and-white ensemble, which consisted of a polka-dot midi dress, a leather bralette worn on top, and lace-up patent-leather boots.

The outfit was fun, feminine, and perfect for a street-style day in New York City.

However, it wasn't as effective at the Met Gala, where the look felt underwhelming. It also wasn't the best representation of the "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" theme.

Olivier Rousteing created the crystal-covered gown Jenner wore that year. It had long sleeves, shoulder pads, a form-fitting bodice with all-over cutouts, and a floor-length skirt with sparkling fringe.

Jenner's glam makeup perfectly complemented the gown's silver shine, putting a glamorous spin on the look.

However, the various shapes of crystal arrangements on the gown — its epaulette-style shoulder design and the imitation corset across the waist, for example — made it look more medieval than anything.

At the 2016 Met Gala, Madonna wasn't afraid to show some skin. She wore a black Givenchy gown made from see-through lace, revealing everything from her shoulders to her thighs.

In theory, that should have worked for the boundary-pushing superstar, especially when paired with thigh-high leather boots and silver jewelry.

The outfit missed the mark, though, thanks to two round cutouts across the chest and a high-cut bottom that revealed her backside — both looked more silly than provocative.

The 2019 Met Gala marks the first and only time Styles walked the famous Met steps for the annual event.

Unfortunately, his outfit that day was a letdown, especially considering he was a Met Gala co-chair that year. He wore a one-piece Gucci jumpsuit that was almost plain black. Its only interesting features were its flowing mesh sleeves with lace at the wrists and its ruffled neckpiece.

Styles would have been better off experimenting with color of a more daring silhouette on the pink carpet that year.

In 2019, Kloss famously posted a photo of herself in the reflection of a mirror with the caption "looking camp right in the eye." So, fans expected the model to have a standout fashion moment at the Met Gala.

Instead, she arrived in a gold, strapless minidress with short, puffy black sleeves. Though it was designed by Dapper Dan in collaboration with Gucci, it looked more like a party dress you could find in any mall.

Though he was probably attempting to match the camp theme with his dramatic Dior look, Jonas looked more like he was wearing a costume.

A piece of white fabric wrapped around his body and arm, while his undershirt and boots were covered with the same silver sparkles.

The Cartier jewelry he wore — from an ear cuff to statement rings — only added to the silly flair.

Ciara arrived at the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" gala in a sparkly, lime green gown from Dundas.

The gown was designed to look like Russell Wilson's football jersey, nodding to Ciara's husband through the number three on the bodice. The "Goodies" singer even carried a football-shaped clutch with the outfit.

It was a fun outfit, but it celebrated Wilson more than the Met Gala theme. The gown would have been better suited for the ESPY Awards.

Mock arrived in a Thom Browne suit that put a whimsical spin on traditional menswear. The suit featured shorts instead of pants and safety pin detailing on the jacket.

The shorts exposed his dress socks, and Mock wore an array of rings, elevating the look. However, the black mask he added to the outfit, which included a mohawk and covered his head completely, was distracting.

The look would have been more of a success without the mask.

Madonna's daughter made her Met Gala debut in a hot-pink Moschino gown designed by Jeremy Scott.

The bodice featured a bikini-style bra and crisscrossing fabric across her abdomen. The sarong skirt flowed to the floor, and the dress was covered in heavy beading.

Thanks to its color and halter neckline, the gown evoked early 2000s fashion, but the reference wasn't strong enough to make it feel on-theme.

Levy attended the 2021 Met Gala in a custom JW Anderson ensemble designed to look like Earth. A depiction of two men kissing made up the bodice, and the image took inspiration from AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz, celebrating queer people in the US and globally.

The message was sweet, but the ensemble's design overshadowed it with its puffy sleeves, printed pants, glittery fabric on Levy's waist, and black boots.

The outfit might have been better if it had emphasized the embroidery on Levy's bodice instead of taking a more-is-more approach.

The "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" Met Gala had a "white tie, gilded glamour" dress code, encouraging celebrities to dress to the nines.

Her look was certainly a pun on the dress code, but it didn't make a fashion statement. If Delevingne had worn the red suit with a shirt and gold accessories, it could have been great on the Met Gala red carpet.

Minaj's Burberry strapless gown was made of black feathers and cinched on her waist with an oversize belt. Her chest and arms were covered in body gems, and she wore black leather pants beneath the dress and a black hat.

The outfit had so much going on that it was hard to know where to look. If Minaj had ditched the hat and pants, the ensemble would have looked effortlessly chic, but it was just too busy as she wore it.

The "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" Met Gala honored the late designer's work, and Platt turned to Lagerfeld's love of tweed with his custom Wiederhoeft suit.

Platt's cropped jacket and flared pants were made of white tweed, with black detailing on the pant seams and the jacket's neckline and cuffs. He wore a corset-style blouse beneath the jacket, and the gap between the jacket and the wider pants created the illusion that Platt's waist was dramatically small.

The waist illusion was effective, but came at the cost of Platt's jacket and pants looking stiff. Likewise, his blouse was exposed underneath the hem of the jacket sleeves, making it seem like the outfit didn't fit.

Pugh's Valentino dress for the gala was a solid choice. The white gown had a dramatic train, and a black bow tied the strapless bodice together, playing up Lagerfeld's favorite color scheme.

However, Pugh's feathered headpiece overshadowed the gown. It sat way above Pugh's head and created a diamond shape on her forehead.

The actor debuted her shaved head at the gala, so it made sense she wanted to emphasize it with a headpiece. Still, the one she chose was so dramatic that it took away from the rest of the look.

It seemed like the couple didn't attempt to fit the Karl Lagerfeld-inspired theme with their Hugo Boss looks, aside from sticking to black and white color schemes.

Brittany Mahomes' white gown had silver detailing on the off-the-shoulder neckline, which coordinated with her silver pumps. Patrick Mahomes accessorized his black suit with silver jewelry, black loafers with silver detailing, and black sunglasses.

They could have worn the outfits on any red carpet, which isn't ideal for a Met Gala look.

DeBose wrote on Instagram that her gown was designed to offer a modern spin on silhouettes from the 1930s and '40s, speaking to Lagerfeld's celebration of retro styles.

A faux-fur-trimmed hood created the neon-yellow gown's off-the-shoulder neckline. The dress cinched DeBose's waist with elastic fabric before flowing into a mermaid-style skirt.

The gown's bright color and jacket-style bodice weren't obvious in their nods to the past, so it looked a bit out of place at the Met Gala. Perhaps a different color or less modern detailing might have made the dress a better fit for the event.

Pat McGrath covered Lil Nas X in head-to-toe silver body paint and crystals, transforming him into a red carpet take on Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette.

A mask and boots completed his look, which was certainly eye-catching but didn't strike the tone of Lagerfeld's work. The ensemble might have been more fitting at the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" Met Gala.

The 2024 "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" Met Gala had a "Garden of Time" dress code. Witzøe, a Norwegian billionaire, dressed to the theme with an Atelier Versace look consisting of a sparkly bodysuit, a leg-baring skirt, and a dramatic cape.

The ensemble had an ancient Greek feel, but rather than paying homage to the time period, it looked like Witzøe was just dressing up as someone from the era.

Ora's column dress had a boat neckline and then cinched inward, exposing her legs. The gown was made of strands of colorful beads, which dated back to the first and second centuries BC, as Ora told Vogue during its livestream for the 2024 event.

The material was a great fit for the "Garden of Time" dress code, but Ora's styling didn't emphasize it. Instead, the nude bodysuit she wore under the gown and her slicked-back hair became the focus of the dress.

Ora should have let the dress shine through her styling to nail the theme.
