Love it or hate it, everyone is talking about Lululemon's $148 dress

  • Lululemon's 2-in-1 maxi dress has become massively popular overnight.
  • The stretchy garment is more suited for casual outings, unlike the brand's athletic wear.
  • Some shoppers, however, have argued the dress is overpriced and basic.

It's a gown. It's a skirt. It's $148 and strangely controversial.

I'm talking about the 2-in-1 maxi dress from Lululemon, which, in all fairness, you might not have ever noticed.

The garment is extremely understated and more ideal for a walk on the beach than a workout class. There's a good chance you've scrolled past it while shopping for new leggings on the brand's website.

Fashion fans, however, can't seem to talk about anything other than the stretchy shift right now.

A model wears the 2-in-1 Maxi Dress in green from Lululemon.

Lululemon

Lululemon sells everyday clothes. You just might not have noticed.

At its core, Lululemon is an athletic brand. Its Align leggings brought the company fame, and its sweat-repelling pieces have become massive in different sports communities.

Even its everyday staples, like the belt bags teens carry instead of purses and the ABC joggers professional men wear to the office, can be used for sport.

So, Lululemon's maxi dress might seem like an anomaly. It's designed simply to be worn as part of a cute outfit, not an active ensemble.

"I still can't comprehend how this dress is from Lululemon," one TikToker captioned her video about the garment.

It's really not an outlier, though. Lululemon has been selling maxi dresses and other casual staples for years. They're just sleeper hits.

@gracegerhardt this dress deserves all the hype it’s getting @lululemon @lululemon Studio #lululemon #lululemonhaul #thneeddress #lululemondress #lululemonaddict ♬ original sound - billslyric

This specific strapless dress can be worn as a skirt when its top is folded over the hips. It's sold in four colors β€” light ivory, black, lava cake, and raceway green β€” and sizes between XXXS and XL.

Many of the sizes are now sold out across colorways, and it's unclear if the brand will restock.

Representatives for Lululemon didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Cute, but costly

As is the nature of the internet, the very existence of the simple dress has been debated. Over the past two weeks, dozens of videos taggedΒ #lululemondressΒ have been posted to TikTok.

Many have raved about its soft texture, saying the dress contours your body and fits like a dream. Its versatility is also a big draw.

Others, however, said its design is way too basic and overpriced, retailing for $148.

Though the dresses are made from a mix of fabrics, including silk and Lenzing Modal, they also contain nylon and Lycra elastane, which some shoppers dislike for being unsustainable and plastic.

"It's not that it's ugly, it's just not $150 type of cute," one TikToker wrote.

"Ok but if you saw it at Walmart, would you buy it??" another TikTok user said.

Some people are so bothered by the dress that they've even compared it to a "thneed," the fictional, trendy garment mentioned in "The Lorax." The comparison has made the dress even more viral, with shoppers debating if Lululemon's garment fits the bill.

I'm here to tell you that comparison is not accurate at all.

After all, Lululemon's dress does not look like a stretched-out sweater, like a thneed does, and it can't be worn as a sock, hat, or sweatshirt, like a thneed can.

Now, is the dress worth $148 of your hard-earned money, or the time and effort it will take to find one in your size right now? That's for you to decide.

11 daring dresses that might be banned at the Cannes Film Festival if worn today

17 May 2025 at 04:12

  • The 2025 Cannes Film Festival will run between May 13 and May 24.
  • This year, guests have received an updated dress code that bans nudity and dresses with long trains.
  • Iconic gowns worn by Bella Hadid and other stars in the past have been sheer and dramatically long.

I never thought I'd say this, but we need more "naked" dresses on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet.

You know the style I'm talking about. They're form-fitted, made with mesh, and heavily beaded in just the right areas.

My colleagues and I have been complaining for years that they've overtaken red carpets (at the French festival and elsewhere), but I take it all back now that they've been banned from Cannes.

A new dress code for this year's event, which runs until May 24, prohibits nudity "for decency reasons." The film festival has also put a stop to excessively voluminous dress trains that make it difficult for others to walk the red carpet or sit inside theaters.

Clearly, we didn't appreciate what we had when we had it.

So, as we mourn the loss of these dramatic fashion staples, here's a look at some daring outfits from past Cannes Film Festivals that probably wouldn't be allowed on the red carpet in 2025.

Eva Longoria's gray gown at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival showed a lot of skin.

Though the Gabriela Cadena piece appeared conservative from the front with its solid gray fabric, it was actually entirely sheer down its sides.

Only clusters of silver sparkles and see-through mesh sat atop her legs, hips, and torso. Though it worked then, the partial nudity might not fly at this year's event.

Kendall Jenner put an edgy twist on sheer fashion in 2016.

Roberto Cavalli designed Jenner's sheer black gown, which might not make it past security at Cannes today.

The long-sleeved piece, crafted from mesh, showed most of her body. She wore only high-waisted underwear beneath it.

A snake print and light glitter made the dress even more dramatic.

Everyone remembers the model's 2018 appearance in a white Schiaparelli number.

That year, she ditched a bra when she wore her tulle gown, which showed her chest with sheer straps that acted as a top.

Its long, tiered skirt was also see-through and voluminous, though not enough to get in the way of other people walking the red carpet.

Deepika Padukone covered the Cannes stairs with a massive train in 2019.

Every inch of the actor's Peter Dundas gown was dramatic that year.

It had giant puffed sleeves, a bow that extended past her torso, and a skirt train that was so long it covered numerous steps behind her.

The gown was the definition of voluminous, especially because she needed at least two people to help her get up the stairs.

Ngoc Trinh, on the other hand, essentially wore a leotard that year.

The model walked the Cannes red carpet in a black number from Đỗ Long. It was made from mesh and therefore entirely sheer.

It was also cut in a daring style. The outfit featured a backless halter top, a keyhole cutout at the chest, a thong bottom, and two thin strips of fabric in place of a skirt.

Bella Hadid made a bold accessory choice in 2021 that might break some current rules.

Hadid wore a plain black gown at Cannes in 2021.

However, her long-sleeved Schiaparelli dress was daring with a scooped neckline that plunged to her waist.

The model also wore a golden necklace shaped like lungs to cover her chest. Though not technically nude, wearing the same pieces at the 2025 event would be risky.

Farhana Bodi brought a ton of ruffles to Cannes that year.

The TV star was a vibrant pop of color on the red carpet thanks to her strapless yellow dress. It was crafted from tulle in tiers of ruffles that extended into a long, thick train.

Because the skirt pieces have since been banned, there's a chance that Bodi wouldn't be able to wear the same dress to this year's event.

Leila Depina sported crystal chainmail in 2023.

The model wore a simple thong beneath a sleeveless look crafted from strings of crystals, which showed her body.

To complete the look, Depina sported see-through sandals and delicate jewelry.

Didi Stone was one of last year's best-dressed stars, but one of her gowns might not slide in 2025.

For one red carpet, the French model wore a black StΓ©phane Rolland gown. It was made with thick black fabric that draped around her head and hips in a circle and down her legs as a skirt.

What made the ensemble even more daring, though, were the layered rope necklaces she wore as a top. It was bold enough to possibly break this year's dress code.

Hadid skipped a bra for one of her Cannes appearances last year.

Saint Laurent created the brown halter dress she wore last year, which was almost entirely sheer. Only her waist and hips were wrapped with extra fabric to create a more opaque look.

It might not have been Hadid's most dramatic look at the film festival, but it was one of her most see-through.

Mean Sonyta wore one of the longest trains in Cannes history last year.

The actor and model wrote on Instagram at the time that she wanted her Cannes outfit to honor Cambodian fashion.

So she tapped designer brand De l'Elegance to create her strapless gown, matching hat, and extensive green train. It was so long, however, that similar trains might not be allowed at future Cannes festivals.

A luxury version of H&M is taking over in 2025 — and making it cool to be basic

17 May 2025 at 02:02

  • COS is having a major moment. Lyst just named it one of the "hottest brands" of Q1.
  • The London-based fashion label, owned by H&M, is known for its high-quality basics.
  • Its menswear pieces and new fragrance line are boosting its appeal with shoppers.

I promise it's OK to be basic. In fact, it might even be cool.

A few months ago, I started hearing friends and colleagues regularly talk about the London-based fashion label COS, which is owned by H&M. Admittedly, I tuned them out. Its clothes looked a little too simple for me.

But I couldn't escape the brand.

Fashion influencers started raving about COS in interviews when I asked about their wardrobe staples. Then, I saw Lyst, a fashion search and shopping platform, name COS one of the "hottest brands" of Q1 this year, jumping 11 spots since its Q4 listing in 2024.

That's partially because COS is ideal for shoppers "seeking the 'quiet luxury' aesthetic without the luxury price tag," Turner Allen, a 32-year-old personal stylist, told Business Insider.

It's also because COS has done something many other brands haven't: created basic clothes that people actually want to wear.

A Cos store in a mall.

Samantha Grindell/Business Insider

Men and perfume: two ingredients to success

Women have long been touting COS as the ultimate aspirational luxury line. BI reporter Sam Grindell Pettyjohn described the store as "H&M's more sophisticated, socially conscious, and luxurious older sister."

Men are now coming to the same conclusion. Alex Nicoll, 29, a former Fortune 500 employee turned fashion influencer, swears by COS.

"It's really slept on for men's fashion," he told BI. "It's a good place to play around with classic silhouettes, and pieces that are a little bit more playful and different."

COS has put in the effort to attract shoppers like Nicoll.

While it's long offered classic styles like trousers and blazers, the brand is now also selling utility bags, cropped polos, and tinted sunglasses specifically for men. This appeals to current trends while remaining timeless.

Allen said that mix of "clean, approachable, and still fashion-forward" styles is key.

"It's a winning formula for men who want to elevate their style without stepping too far outside their comfort zone," he added.

The brand also reflects those styles in its marketing, from prominently displaying men on its Instagram page to making menswear a huge part of its Spring/Summer 2025 runway collection.

All the while, COS is still equally catering to the rest of its customers.

The brand's $99 barrel-leg trousers for women became an instant success this year, and most sizes are now sold out. Lyst has cited the pants as the sixth most-popular garment of Q1.

In mid-April, the brand also launched COS Perfumery, a unisex line of fragrances and candles retailing between $49 and $99.

Lyst said the scents are another factor in the brand's 44% increase in demand this year.

After all, COS shoppers no longer have to turn to brands like Byredo and Le Labo for luxury fragrances. They can buy their favorite clothes and perfume in the same online order.

Luxury clothes without high price tags

New tariffs and a potential recession are changing how people shop, and luxury lifestyle brands are already being affected.

COS, however, holds a unique spot.

It's technically a runway brand that sells luxury-adjacent garments, many of which lean into the old-money aesthetic. Its products retail between $15 for small items like socks and $1,390 for shearling-lined coats.

However, they aren't as expensive as those from retailers like The Row, Bottega Veneta, and Loewe.

COS also boasts brand ambassadors like Adrien Brody and celebrity fans like Jodie Turner-Smith. If the brand is good enough for Hollywood actors, it's golden for fashion fans.

COS clothes look and feel good, plain and simple

Nicoll said he loves COS because the brand "keeps up with trends like a fast-fashion brand would" without compromising on "materials or construction." Fashion fans on social media have said the same.

"This is like Skims but for men," TikToker @stefffanos wrote about COS T-shirts after trying them in April. Skims does sell menswear, including T-shirts.

Andrea Cheong, a fashion writer and influencer, also applauded the brand's stitching, fabric reinforcements, and thick materials in a video.

The clothing is made with a variety of classic materials like linen, denim, and wool, many of which are said to be sustainably sourced. COS also publicly shares a list of its current suppliers on its website.

That craftsmanship completes the COS fashion puzzle. With its reputation for high-quality pieces β€” as well as reasonable prices, coveted menswear, and timeless styles β€” there's nothing the brand doesn't have.

COS is trendy, unisex, and feels rich, though you don't need to be to shop the brand.

"It's a great option for shoppers who want to step off the fast-fashion hamster wheel, but still look current and put-together," Allen said.

11 of the most daring looks Lauren SΓ‘nchez has ever worn, from corset minidresses to see-through lace gowns

16 May 2025 at 12:46

  • Lauren SΓ‘nchez has been wearing daring outfits since the start of her career as a TV news anchor.
  • Her fashion has gotten even bolder while in a relationship with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
  • Her most striking outfit choices have included corset minidresses and see-through lace gowns.

When Lauren SΓ‘nchez attends an event, she's tough to miss.

For one thing, the Emmy-award-winning news anchor usually attends red carpets and fundraising dinners alongside her billionaire fiancΓ©, Jeff Bezos. Together, they're often the it-couple at events.

She's also on her way to becoming a fashion force all on her own.

In April 2024, SΓ‘nchez first caught major style attention when she wore a semi-sheer corset gown to attend a White House state dinner. The daring dress was divisive and cemented her spot in the world of fashion discourse.

She then attended her first Met Gala that year and was said to have been styled in part by Anna Wintour herself.

Here's a look at her boldest style moments, from see-through pieces to form-fitting gowns.

Lauren SΓ‘nchez first experimented with daring fashion in 2004.

She attended the Shalom Foundation Gala that year wearing a strapless brown dress that hugged her body and reached the floor.

It was covered from top to bottom in beaded florals and was held together across its open back with extremely thin strings β€” one of which also crossed her shoulder like a strap.

She donned a visible corset years later when she attended the 2010 American Music Awards.

She walked the red carpet in a black minidress, which was strapless, lined with mesh, and cinched at the waist with a plethora of small strings.

SΓ‘nchez wore the bold garment with strappy sandals and a statement ring.

Her fashion really took a daring turn when she and Jeff Bezos became red-carpet official.

The couple walked their first red carpet together in coordinated outfits featuring bold prints. But SΓ‘nchez's red and black gown stood out for a few other reasons, too.

The sequined piece had a plunging neckline that reached her navel, sheer long sleeves decorated with black beads, and a thigh-high slit.

For the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscars party, SΓ‘nchez tried the "no pants" look.

She walked the blue carpet alongside Bezos in a sequined, off-the-shoulder gown from Elie Saab. It was crafted with a black leotard and sheer overlay.

Aside from thin black stripes, the latter piece was sheer, showing her legs and see-through sandals.

The dress was also designed with a low, V-shaped neckline, adding another daring element to the look.

She's never afraid to rock vibrant colors.

At Kering's 2023 Caring For Women dinner, SΓ‘nchez posed for photographers in a fluorescent yellow gown.

The high-neck dress was form-fitting up top, floor-length at the bottom, and covered entirely in sequins.

SΓ‘nchez wore one of her most daring looks to date at a Dolce & Gabbana party in January 2024.

She was photographed walking with Bezos to the Milan party, but her black dress captured all the attention.

The form-fitting piece was strapless with a corset top and crafted entirely from lace β€” meaning it was also see-through and revealed her black underwear.

She wore the daring dress with black sandals, a rosette shawl, sunglasses, and a long silver necklace.

She celebrated the Oscars months later in an eye-catching dress that matched the Vanity Fair red carpet.

Lever Couture designed her red dress with a deep neckline, puffy tulle sleeves, a corset bodice, and a semi-sheer skirt.

The party outfit was as glamorous as it was bold, thanks to SΓ‘nchez's accessories. She wore tan pumps, diamond earrings, and a statement, sparkling necklace.

Some of her boldest looks have been controversial, like the corset dress SΓ‘nchez wore to the White House in 2024.

SΓ‘nchez and Bezos were invited to the White House for a state dinner in honor of then-Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

But while Bezos wore a classic tuxedo, his fiancΓ©e took a much bolder approach.

SΓ‘nchez, styled by Kelly Johnson, wore a red gown with a satin skirt and see-through corset top. The latter piece had a low neckline, off-the-shoulder sleeves, and lace detailing.

Many questioned whether the daring dress was appropriate in the White House setting, but others β€” including celebrities like Chrissy Teigen β€” staunchly defended her character and outfit choice.

She then wore yet another lace corset piece to attend a pre-Met Gala party.

SΓ‘nchez made her Met Gala debut in 2024 with much fanfare. According to fashion journalist and author Amy Odell, Anna Wintour helped pick the Oscar de la Renta gown SΓ‘nchez wore, and it was the first time Bezos attended with a date in over a decade.

But the couple also attended a celebratory dinner beforehand and an after-party following the ball.

For the former event, SΓ‘nchez sported a black minidress that was strapless and made from see-through lace. It also had a corset bodice that was cinched at the waist.

SΓ‘nchez opted for a nude-illusion gown in September 2024.

Oscar de la Renta designed the long-sleeved, off-the-shoulder garment she wore to Kering's Caring for Women event.

It had a tan bodysuit that matched her skin tone beneath a sheath of dark floral lace. The dress hugged her body and showed some skin, creating a look that was both daring and glamorous.

Rumors surrounding SΓ‘nchez and Bezos's coming wedding have been circulating for over a year. So it was pretty bold of the children's author to wear a white gown that looked like a wedding dress to Vanity Fair's Oscar Party.

The Oscar de la Renta piece was strapless with a mermaid silhouette and embellished with white feathers at the top and bottom of its skirt.

Everything Bella Hadid has worn on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet, ranked from least to most daring

16 May 2025 at 08:41

  • Bella Hadid has been attending the Cannes Film Festival in France since 2016.
  • The 28-year-old model has worn a mix of glamorous gowns and daring looks.
  • Her boldest outfits have included see-through fabric, a lung-shaped necklace, and hip-high slits.

Bella Hadid is the queen of the Cannes Film Festival.

Of course, that's not a real title, but it should be. Since 2016, the model and brand founder has regularly been one of the best-dressed stars of the French event.

She's worn silk slip dresses, elegant ball gowns, and even a necklace shaped like lungs.

Here's a look back at her Cannes red-carpet fashion, ranked from least to most daring.

She walked the red carpet in a strapless, mauve ball gown designed by Christian Dior and a few pieces of diamond jewelry.

Her long, straight hair and neutral makeup were equally elegant.

She was a bit bolder the year before when she wore a red gown made from quilted fabric.

The Dior Haute Couture dress was sleeveless with thin straps, a standard waistband, and a petal-shaped neckline.

She wore it with black sandals, heavy eye makeup, and snake-shaped Bulgari jewels.

Fast forward to 2022, and Hadid continued to wear classic red-carpet fashion with an edgy twist.

That year, she wore a black mermaid dress designed by Gianni Versace in 1987.

It had a ruched, strapless bodice, velvet skirt, and a hoop of black fabric across her waist and hips.

She also wore an understated gown with small, daring details that year.

Her vintage, white Gucci dress was simple with long sleeves and a straight skirt.

Though she wore no bra with the gown, she did wear a metal-encrusted pair of underwear seen through the circular cutout at her hip.

The sleeveless Saint Laurent piece was pretty simple, with only a thigh-high slit and a ruched asymmetrical neckline visible from its front.

The other side of the gown was a bit more interesting with cutouts that showed her back.

At her first Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Hadid wore a sparkling gown with a deep neckline.

The Roberto Cavalli Couture gown had a slip that matched her skin tone and created the appearance of a see-through dress.

It was also decorated with crystals from top to bottom and had a floor-length skirt that extended into a short train.

The gown's bodice, on the other hand, was sleeveless with crisscross straps across the chest.

She dazzled even more in 2018 when she wore a form-fitting halter gown.

The Jean Paul Gaultier dress had a black bra underneath a halter top made from twisted mesh. On top was another layer: a strapless white gown that sat beneath her bust.

Some of the mesh material was also attached to the back of the dress, creating a wide train that fanned out behind the model.

Hadid's red gown was designed by Roberto Cavalli.

The single-sleeve, backless design had a cutout at one hip and a thigh-high slit in the front of its skirt.

It also had a jeweled strap that wrapped around her shoulders and held the actual dress up. She wore it with red sandals, matching lipstick, and an updo hairstyle.

Hadid also rocked the see-through dress trend that year.

Her Dior Haute Couture had an asymmetrical halter top and tiers of ruffles made from semi-sheer white tulle.

In addition to the gown, Hadid donned a thick silver bracelet, diamond earrings, and a bun hairstyle.

She wore a red Alexandre Vauthier gown that was sleeveless, backless, and had a loose-fitting top with a plunging neckline. The bold gown also had a flowing skirt with a hip-high slit.

Speaking with Vogue in 2021, the model said she felt "embarrassed" by the look, despite it "apparently" being "a very iconic red dress moment."

"I was nervous in this dress. I look very sexual and all these things," she said. "I was still nervous about cameras and nervous about having a lot of makeup on."

Hadid also said the dress didn't match her style, and it gave people a false perception of who she is.

"That's my alter ego. That's Belinda," she joked. "I'm just so the opposite of her. She's very va-va-voom. You know, bless her. Love her. She was very nervous."

In 2021, Hadid wore arguably her boldest Cannes look: a black dress with a scoop neckline that extended below her chest.

The daring design was made by Schiaparelli. The fashion house described the garment on Instagram as a "long-sleeved dress in wool crepe with a low-cut neckline."

To cover her chest, Hadid donned a large, lung-shaped necklace made from "gilded brass" and "adorned with rhinestones," according to the brand.

The pairing made for one of the most daring looks at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.

The best and worst celebrity outfits at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival so far

  • The 2025 Cannes Film Festival is underway in France.
  • The event will run until May 24 and feature numerous opportunities for bold fashion.
  • Eva Longoria wore a stunning gown at a premiere, while Bella Hadid missed the mark with her look.

The stars are out at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

This year's event kicked off on May 13 with an opening ceremony and the premiere of the French film "Leave One Day." The festival will continue until May 24, providing nearly two weeks of French street style and red-carpet fashion.

So far, some celebrities have turned heads in bold ensembles, while others have missed the mark with their looks.

From Bella Hadid to Halle Berry, here are the best and worst looks we've seen.

Elle Fanning's strapless gown was simple, but effective.

She walked the "Affeksjonsverdi" red carpet on Wednesday in a strapless Giorgio Armani design that looked pretty and chic.

It was fitted to her body, decorated with pink rose appliquΓ©s, and completed with a plunging sweetheart neckline.

Alex Consani wore a two-piece set that was almost perfect.

She arrived for "The Phoenician Scheme" screening on Sunday in a uniquely shaped Schiaparelli set.

The model's structured top had a beaded, off-the-shoulder neckpiece that covered her chest and a high-low peplum waistband. Her pants, on the other hand, were oversize and wide.

Though her statement blouse had potential, Consani's pants were a little too big and needed tailoring. A form-fitting skirt might have looked better with the top piece.

Alexander Skarsgard faced a similar issue.

The actor could have looked classic with a traditional tuxedo for the red-carpet event, or he could have attempted a more daring style.

Instead, he tried to do both at the same time.

He wore a sharp Saint Laurent tux with his trousers tucked into thigh-high leather boots β€” a style the fashion house first revealed in its January runway show.

The shoes were distracting and felt out of place with his otherwise basic look.

Mariska Hargitay had a glamorous pink moment on Saturday.

For the "Die, My Love" screening, Hargitay chose an off-the-shoulder gown crafted with black satin and sparkling hot-pink fabric.

The color combination was sharp, the gown's straight silhouette fit the actor perfectly, and her elbow-length gloves made the outfit even more elegant.

For the "Eddington" red carpet on Friday, Jeremy Strong should have picked a different suit.

His brown ensemble included a button-up shirt, a wrap blazer, straight-leg trousers, and a bow tie, all cut with raw hems.

While the rough style might have worked for a different event, it looked too casual at Cannes. His black loafers were also too harsh against the lighter outfit.

Natalie Portman showed the best of Dior.

She walked the "Eddington" red carpet in a strapless, sparkling creation from the French fashion house.

Its silver top was covered in sparkles and wrapped with a black bow, while its floor-length skirt had Dior's classic Junon petals.

Portman accessorized the look perfectly with a bun hairstyle and a thick diamond necklace.

Angelina Jolie's gown would have worked better in a different color.

Also on the "Eddington" red carpet, Jolie wore a strapless Brunello Cucinelli design. It had a thick floor-length skirt, a fitted bodice, and all-over sparkles that highlighted its rope texture.

Though the actor looked pretty, her gown's ivory color matched her skin tone too closely and washed her out. The same dress in a pink or lilac shade could have worked better.

Elaine Zhong stunned in a cream-colored ball gown.

The Chinese actor wore the strapless dress on the "Dossier 137" red carpet. Its structured bodice was decorated with beaded appliques, and its cups were shaped with flower petals.

To accessorize the glamorous look, she added a sparkling diamond choker, matching earrings, a thick bracelet, and vibrant red lipstick.

Zoe SaldaΓ±a's all-black ensemble didn't stand out.

She attended the "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" red carpet in a black Saint Laurent gown.

Though her sleeveless dress was classic, it was also overly simple. Statement jewels could have easily enhanced the look.

She also draped a dark leather jacket around her arms, which was much more casual than the rest of her outfit.

Araya Alberta Hargate sparkled down the same red carpet.

She wore a crystal-covered dress that looked like it was molded to her body with its form-fitting design.

Its strapless, snake-print bodice was corseted with a deep plunge down the middle, and its floor-length skirt was pink and embellished with countless sparkles.

The Thai actor completed her look with a large diamond necklace crafted in the shape of leaves.

Heidi Klum had a pearlescent moment, but it wasn't her best.

Elie Saab designed the model's off-the-shoulder gown. It had a deep V-neckline, see-through stripes, and all-over sparkles in blue and purple.

Some of those details might have worked on their own. But together, especially with the gown's mermaid shape, its accents made it look more theatrical than glamorous.

Tom Cruise looked sharp in maroon.

Cruise attended a promotional event for "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" at Cannes.

In doing so, he became one of the best-dressed men at the festival so far this year.

He wore a fitted, textured knit polo and matching trousers with sharp pleats. The outfit was understated and vibrant on its own, while his brown dress shoes and dark sunglasses gave it an edge.

Halle Berry made a last-minute fashion change, but her new outfit didn't work for her.

When Berry walked onto the Cannes red carpet, she wore a shapeless Jacquemus gown with a black-and-white stripe print.

She later told reporters that she'd originally planned to wear an "amazing dress" from Gaurav Gupta, but had to find a new look when Cannes announced a new dress code that prohibits voluminous gowns with long trains the day before the festival began.

Unfortunately for Berry, the bold dress she chose was so flowy and oversize that it seemed to wear her, when it should have been the other way around.

Isabeli Fontana could have been mistaken for a princess in a metallic gown.

Nicolas Jebran designed her halter gown. The form-fitting piece had knotted fabric at the hip, a floor-length skirt with a short train, and a hip-high slit that revealed her sparkling pumps.

The gown was also adorned with a sparkling silver piece that covered one shoulder and was embedded with turquoise stones.

The ensemble was elegant and fit Fontana perfectly.

Bella Hadid is always one of the best-dressed stars at Cannes, but her outfit choice for the 2025 opening ceremony was underwhelming.

Saint Laurent designed her sleeveless black dress with some interesting details. Its straps crisscrossed across her back to create cutouts and a deep plunge on the side of her chest.

However, the front of the gown was overly simple. It had an asymmetrical neckline that looked mishapen, and a thigh-high slit that was cut too far to the side.

Even her massive emerald earrings from Chopard weren't enough to make the ensemble memorable.

Eva Longoria sparkled down the red carpet in a stunning gown.

Scott A Garfitt/Invision/AP

Her Tamara Ralph gown was strapless and covered in square metallic pieces that sparkled in the light as she walked.

It also had velvet panels at the waist that gave the dress some shape and matched its glamorous train.

Not only was the dress tailored perfectly to Longoria, but the actor also accessorized strongly. She wore a statement necklace, rings, and earrings from Pasquale Bruni.

Irina Shayk wore a fun gown, but a different hairstyle could have elevated the whole look.

The model arrived wearing a black Armani PrivΓ© gown with all-over white polka dots. It had a strapless neckline, off-the-shoulder puffed sleeves, and a full skirt.

On its own, the dress was fun, frilly, and perfect for Cannes.

But Shayk wore her hair styled in a dramatic shape β€” a bun atop a strip of pin-straight hair β€” that distracted from her outfit.

Mark Zuckerberg is a certified watch guy. Here are some of his standout timepieces, from a $120 Casio to a $900,000 Greubel Forse.

  • Mark Zuckerberg has an impressive watch collection, which he often shows off at public appearances.
  • He's worn luxury designs from Rolex, Patek Philippe, De Bethune, and more.
  • One of his most expensive timepieces came from Greubel Forsey and was valued at $900,000.

Mark Zuckerberg is the king of the quiet glow up β€” but his luxury watch collection reminds us that in fact, he's worth billions.

The 40-year-old Meta founder, who is estimated to be worth over $207 billion, has taken to flaunting his wealth via wrist candy in recent years.

From a flashy Rolex to a $900,000 Greubel Forsey creation, here's a look at some of his standout timepieces.

Anant Ambani seemingly sparked Mark Zuckerberg's interest in watches.

While attending Ambani'sΒ pre-wedding partyΒ in March 2024, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were seenΒ admiring a Richard Mille watchΒ worn by the Reliance Industries heir.

"You know, I never really wanted to get a watch, but after seeing that, I was like, watches are cool," Zuckerberg is heard saying in a video of the interaction.

While he clarified to Chan that he wasn't interested in buying the same watch, he said he'd consider similar options.

Six months later, he was seen wearing a coveted Patek Philippe design.

Patek Philippe

On September 1, 2024, Zuckerberg shared an Instagram photo of himself embracing his wife. In the image, his wrist was adorned with a large watch featuring a gold face and a brown strap.

Zuckerberg indulged watch fanatics who asked for details, sharing that the watch was a "5236P," or a Grand Complications In-Line Perpetual Calendar watch from Patek Philippe.

The timepiece is crafted with a platinum case and an alligator-leather band. In terms of functionality, it displays the current day, date, and month. It also indicates leap years, moon phases, and whether it's day or nighttime.

It retails for $141,400, according to the brand's website.

He then displayed a rare watch he'd acquired from De Bethune.

Laure Andrillon/Reuters

Zuckerberg appeared at an "Acquired" podcast event on September 10, 2024. While onstage, he was photographed wearing another flashy watch: a DB25 Starry Varius from the Swiss watch brand De Bethune.

He seemed to be wearing its rose-gold model, which can cost over $80,000 from independent watch sellers. As watch specialist Bryan Li previously told Business Insider, only 20 of the watches are made annually.

Other variants β€” like one made from titanium and another encrusted with 273 diamonds β€” can cost between $75,000 and $127,000.

There's also the AΓ©rolite version of the watch, which features a dial made from a meteorite and usually costs $260,000.

This De Bethune piece β€” and Zuckerberg's Patek Philippe watch β€” showed a significant shift in the Facebook founder's style, taking his outfits from basic to luxe almost overnight.

Zuckerberg also began wearing an F.P. Journe design in September 2024.

He was photographed wearing a chunky silver watch onstage at the 2024 Meta Connect conference. It appears to have been a variant of a watch from the Swiss brand F.P. Journe's Souveraine collection.

The specific one Zuckerberg wore featured a thick band and large black buttons on its side. Sotheby's listed what appears to be the same watch for auction in March, and said it was made entirely from aluminum.

The auction company also said the watch style was produced between 2011 and 2014. The piece was estimated to sell for between $30,000 and $54,000, though it's unclear what it actually sold for.

The same watch in a darker gray colorway is now available to purchase online for $135,000.

At the beginning of 2025, the tech mogul debuted what appears to be one of the most expensive watches in his collection.

Greubel Forsey

On January 8, Zuckerberg posted a video to announce the end of Meta's fact-checking partnerships in the US. In the clip, he's seen wearing a Greubel Forsey watch that retails for over $900,000.

According to the brand's website, the watch is assembled entirely by hand, and only two or three are crafted each year. It's made with white gold and contains 281 pieces.

Michel Nydegger, the CEO of Greubel Forsey, told Bloomberg at the time that Zuckerberg showed "true appreciation for the most traditional approach to fine watchmaking" by wearing the piece.

He then sported a Rolex at a UFC event in March.

Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC

Zuckerberg posted a handful of photos and videos from the mixed martial arts event, which showed a thick gold watch on his wrist.

BI spoke with four watch experts at the time, who all said the timepiece was likely a yellow-gold Rolex Daytona Le Mans.

Though Rolex has never confirmed how many exist, collectors and sellers say the watch style is rare.

That's partially why it had a resale value of up to $300,000, as Ng Yong Shen, a vice president at the Dubai-based secondhand retailer Re-Loved Luxury, told BI.

His watch collection isn't entirely luxurious.

G-Shock

In April, Zuckerberg appeared onΒ The Colin and Samir ShowΒ wearing a white timepiece with a vibrant blue face.

Watch fanatics quickly pointed it out as the GA2100WS-7A from Casio's G-Shock line. Made from resin and mineral glass, the watch retails for $120.

So far, it's the least expensive watch Zuckerberg has worn in public.

Every outfit the Kardashian-Jenner family has ever worn at the Met Gala, ranked from least to most iconic

6 May 2025 at 12:02

  • Members of the Kardashian-Jenner family have been attending the Met Gala since 2013.
  • Some of their red carpet looks have missed the mark, while others are now considered iconic.
  • Kim Kardashian's outfits, in particular, have become some of the most famous worn at the event.

It's tough to imagine the Met Gala without the Kardashian-Jenner family.

Kim Kardashian made her first appearance at the event in 2013 as Kanye West's date. Since then, she, her sisters, and mom Kris Jenner have regularly made showstopping appearances at the Costume Institute fundraiser.

And while some of their outfits have made Met Gala history, others have missed the mark.

Here's a look at everything the family has worn at the annual event, ranked from least to most iconic.

Kris Jenner attended the 2016 Met Gala in a dress that was more simple than stunning.

Still, her black Balmain gown was pretty. It was custom-made for the TV star with sheer long sleeves, a mermaid-style skirt, and beaded patterns from top to bottom.

She paired it with a black choker, heavy eye makeup, and diamond jewelry.

Kendall Jenner walked her first Met Gala red carpet in a hairstyle that didn't suit her gown.

Her strapless, mermaid-shaped gown designed by Topshop made her look like a princess β€” especially when accessorized with a sparkling clutch and diamond necklace.

But her messy, swept-back hairstyle contrasted with the glamour of her look and distracted from her dress, making for a mismatched look.

Kim Kardashian played it safe at the same event, which she attended with Kanye West.

She wore a strapless Lanvin design, which was made from blue satin with a black lining.

The Skims founder also kept her accessories and glam simple, wearing strappy sandals, dangling diamond earrings, and a loose, wavy hairstyle.

Kendall Jenner's gray ensemble in 2025 had a corporate vibe.

She wore a two-piece set from TorishΓ©ju that included an extra-long skirt and a blazer with a peplum waist. The top was worn without a shirt beneath it, creating a plunge that showed off her diamond necklace.

Jenner looked pretty, but her understated look wasn't glamorous enough to become iconic.

In 2015, Kris wore a plain red dress to the "China: Through the Looking Glass"-themed event.

The simple Balmain design had shoulder pads, a ruched bodice, and a wrap skirt.

While Kris made the outfit more unique with statement earrings, a thick golden belt, and black pumps with gold detailing, her overall outfit wasn't the most memorable that she's worn at the event.

Kim's white dress in 2017 was pretty but massively understated.

Vivienne Westwood designed the off-the-shoulder dress, which also had long sleeves and a straight skirt.

Kim wore simple sandals, no jewelry, and a straight hairstyle to complete the minimalist look.

She told E! News on the red carpet that her outfit included multiple pieces from Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Kris also carried a sparkling Judith Leiber clutch.

It had sheer sleeves, a feather-covered skirt, gold-ribbon embellishments, and amber jewels attached.

So did Kendall in 2016.

She walked the red carpet that year in a blue, tan, and white dress created by Atelier Versace.

Its halter top led to a backless, bralette-style bodice, rounded waist cutouts, and a form-fitting skirt.

The year prior, Kendall looked great in green.

She wore a sleeveless, mock-neck design made with green fabric and beads from the Calvin Klein Collection.

It was held together on each side with thin, crisscross straps and worn without accessories. The model opted for a sleek hairstyle and natural-looking makeup.

She attended the "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age of Technology" event in a futuristic look: a silver, long-sleeved dress covered in sequins and tiny mirrors.

The metallic gown was designed by Balmain and had a daring, thigh-high slit.

But she had actually gone a step further the year before.

For the 2015 Met Gala, the middle Kardashian sister wore a beaded Roberto Cavalli dress with sheer panels and a feather-trimmed skirt.

In an Instagram post at the time, she said her daring dress was inspired by a similar Bob Mackie garment Cher wore to the same event in 1974.

She looked striking at the 2025 event in an edgy ensemble.

She wore a leather Chrome Hearts look with an alligator-skin print. Its corseted top was positioned off her shoulders, and her tight skirt expanded into a mermaid-tail shape.

Though the dress was simple by Kim's standards, her accessories were interesting. She wore a hat that covered her eyes and a statement diamond necklace.

Kourtney Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in an underwhelming outfit.

She walked the 2022 red carpet alongside Travis Barker, and both wore ensembles from Thom Browne.

Kourtney's outfit specifically featured a white, cropped blouse and a unique skirt, which had bandage-style fabric up top and black pleats on the bottom.

But due to its mix of fabrics and muted colors, it almost looked like Kourtney was wearing an unfinished garment.

Kris took inspiration from Jackie Kennedy at the 2022 Met Gala.

She wore a pastel-yellow Oscar de la Renta gown that wrapped around her body. It had a single long sleeve, a shorter one that revealed her white gloves, and a thick beaded hem.

Though her '60s hairstyle made the outfit look a bit more like a costume, Jenner still looked chic on the red carpet.

In 2016, Kylie Jenner made her Met Gala debut in a daring red-carpet look.

Designed by Balmain, her metallic dress was long-sleeved and had silver sequins covering its sheer, mesh fabric. There were also large cutouts at her hips, and smaller ones beneath her waist.

She paired the sparkling look with silver sandals and a sleek black bob.

Kris wore what was arguably her best Met Gala look in 2019.

Her Tommy Hilfiger ensemble included a navy jumpsuit with a crystal star-shaped brooch attached to its deep neckline and a dramatic gray coat with oversize shoulder pads.

To make the outfit even more iconic, the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch added vibrant blue eye makeup, a bedazzled purse, and a short blonde hairstyle.

Kylie had a standout Met Gala moment years earlier in 2017.

At the time, she attended the Met Gala in a see-through Versace dress made from peach-colored mesh. The gown was decorated with beads and crystals, and its short sleeves had long, gold fringe.

Her hair, which was styled in a blonde bob, perfectly complemented her standout fashion.

Her 2025 gown was even better.

Ferragamo created her gray gown, which was perfectly tailored. It had a halter neckline, a sheer corseted bodice, and a gray skirt with beaded embellishments and a thigh-high slit.

She perfected the look with black pumps and sheer gloves.

Her wedding-themed look in 2022 was controversial, but memorable.

With its ruffled skirt, T-shirt bodice, and veil-adorned baseball cap, Kylie's outfit might have been confusing at first glance.

But the look actually honored the late designer Virgil Abloh and his brand Off-White.

Her vibrant gown popped on the 2023 carpet.

It was tough to miss Kylie when she walked the 2023 carpet, thanks to the red and blue Jean Paul Gaultier gown.

Designed by Haider Ackermann, the dress had a blue satin lining, a thigh-high slit, and an asymmetrical neckline that gave the gown a distinctive shape.

Kendall had a gothic moment at the Metropolitan Museum one year earlier.

For the 2022 Met Gala, Kendall wore a black two-piece set from Prada. It featured a mesh tank top that she wore without a bra and a full, high-waisted skirt covered in ruffles.

It might not have been Kendall's most iconic Met Gala look of all time, but it was certainly memorable β€” especially because she wore it with bleached eyebrows.

Kylie opted for a bold and edgy look on the 2018 carpet.

Her Alexander Wang gown was strapless and had a satin bralette connected to its long velvet skirt. There was also a cutout placed right above her stomach, and a silver zipper down her side.

Kylie wore the outfit β€” which also included tiny sunglasses and silver bracelets β€” just three months after giving birth to her first child, Stormi Webster.

Kim's 2013 Met Gala dress was so iconic that it was quickly turned into a meme.
Kim Kardashian's Met Gala debut was in a floral dress with a thigh-high slit. The star was pregnant with eldest child North West at the time.

The floral maternity gown she wore β€” designed by Givenchy β€” had a high neckline, long gloved sleeves, and a thigh-high slit that revealed her matching heels.

Critics quickly took to social media that night, comparing her outfit to everything from a couch to Mrs. Doubtfire. But it wasn't until years later that Kim told Vogue that the comments left her crying "the whole way home" from the event.

"I was very pregnant, very puffy, and bloated, and I was like, 'Oh God, of course, the first time I go I'm gonna be huge,'" she said. "That was OK with me because I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball. I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time."

Still, she noted that "none of the critics mattered" because the Olsen twins walked up to her that night and complimented her outfit.

Whereas Kim's all-white outfit from years prior was arguably forgettable, Kendall's had flair that made it stand out.

Off-White designed her off-the-shoulder jumpsuit, which had mermaid-style pants with short trains at the bottom of each leg. Her look also included sheer white gloves, a long ponytail, diamond earrings, and glamorous makeup.

Kendall emerged as a Met Gala star again in 2019 when she wore a see-through orange dress covered with feathers.

Her iconic, sleeveless dress was custom-made for her by Versace. Its see-through fabric was decorated with beaded fringe, and its skirt had layers of orange feathers that reached the floor.

But her accessories really made this look stand out. She walked the red carpet in a giant feathered neckpiece and thick gold jewelry.

Kim was among the best-dressed stars at the 2018 "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" event.

She wore a gold Atelier Versace dress with a corset bodice and plunging neckline. The sleeveless garment was also metallic and had crystal cross embellishments.

And that's not to mention her hair and makeup, which were equally stunning. Kim wore a half-up, half-down hairstyle, nude lipstick, and striking contact lenses.

Kim's 2023 outfit became more iconic thanks to her daughter.

People had mixed feelings about Kim's pearl-string Schiaparelli gown and the visible shapewear in its center. But no one was more opinionated on the piece than her daughter, North West.

"I like the pearls. I just don't like that it looks like from the Dollar Store," she said of the outfit on an episode of "The Kardashians."

Kendall looked like a rock star when she walked the 2017 red carpet.

Her mesh La Perla dress was black and had a long cutout down the length of its bodice. The see-through fabric also wrapped around her body, creating a thigh-high slit in its skirt.

Kendall completed the iconic look with see-through heels, red lipstick, and a striking contour.

Kendall went pantsless in 2023, and the fashion risk paid off.

She stepped on the carpet that year in a Marc Jacobs bodysuit covered in black sparkles and embellished with silver.

But the garment's most dramatic and impressive pieces were its extra-long sleeves, which reached the floor and cascaded into trains at her side.

The now-iconic outfit was worn with platform boots and diamond earrings.

She wore a glittering Moschino gown that was embellished from top to bottom with gold beads. It was sleek, sexy, and glamorous β€” and made for the perfect debut dress.

KhloΓ© wore the piece with a black satin shawl and gloves that reached past her elbows.

Kylie stole the show in 2019.

She arrived in a lavender Versace gown with a cream-colored bodysuit underneath a layer of see-through, sparkling mesh. The dress featured a scoop neckline and feathered skirt that perfectly matched her puffy feathered gloves.

To top off the iconic look β€” which Kylie later dressed her daughter Stormi in for Halloween β€” the Kylie Cosmetics founder wore a purple wig.

Kim turned heads at the 2021 event in a Balenciaga ensemble that covered her entire face and body.

She looked unrecognizable in the all-black bodysuit, complete with gloves and a long train.

Kim wore it for the event's "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" theme, and viewers quickly turned the fashion statement into a meme.

Kendall's most iconic Met Gala look was the see-through gown she wore that same year.

Her see-through gown matched her skin tone, creating the illusion that she was only wearing rows of sparkling diamonds.

On Instagram, the 818 tequila founder said her stunning dress was inspired by another iconic gown: the one Audrey Hepburn wore in "My Fair Lady."

Kim's borrowed dress in 2022 was scandalous and noteworthy.

She arrived at the 2022 gala wearing a piece that previously belonged to Marilyn Monroe. The sleeveless, sparkling gown was worn by the legendary actor in 1962 when she famously sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.

It was later revealed in an episode of "The Kardashians" that Kim predicted backlash from people who didn't think she deserved to wear the gown.

But like it or not, Kim wearing the dress will forever be a memorable Met Gala moment.

The most iconic Kardashian-Jenner Met Gala look is also the most controversial.

Theo Wargo/Getty Images

The skin-tight Thierry Mugler gown Kim wore in 2019 is iconic both for its exquisite design and the borderline dangerous measures required to wear it.

The tan button-up dress had ruching from top to bottom and crystals that mirrored water droplets, both of which made it look as though Kim had just emerged from water. She even wore her hair in a wet style to enhance the effect.

But in a video for Vogue released after the Met Gala, the reality star said she couldn't sit or go to the bathroom while wearing it because the garment was so tight. She later added in an Instagram post that she had to take "corset breathing lessons" in order to wear the dress.

Ultimately, the iconic and controversial dress led many to criticize the tiny appearance of Kim's waist, with some arguing that she was setting unrealistic beauty standards.

8 details you might have missed from the 2025 Met Gala red carpet

  • The 2025 Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night.
  • Its red carpet was full of attendees who wore intricate outfits with details you might have missed.
  • Diana Ross' train was embroidered with names, and Venus Williams wore tennis ball earrings.

There was a lot going on at the 2025 Met Gala on Monday night.

Celebrities showcased stunning fashion, billionaires made appearances, and a few attendees wore outfits that missed the mark for one reason or another.

That said, you might have missed some of the more intricate details of the Met Gala red carpet. Here are some of the best.

Venus Williams looked glamorous in green, and her earrings subtly paid tribute to her career as an athlete.

Williams looked cool and comfortable in her green Lacoste ensemble. It included a collared shirt, a pleated miniskirt, and an oversize coat with thick beading across its lapels and sleeves.

So, you might have missed her small diamond earrings, which were shaped like tennis balls.

Diana Ross wore an old Hollywood gown that paid tribute to her family members.

Her custom white gown from Eleven Sixteen featured a massive 18-foot train that covered the Metropolitan Museum steps.

It was glamorous, theatrical, and quietly meaningful. On the red carpet, she described it to Vogue as "a forever family" gown.

"It has the names of all my children and my eight grandchildren," she said. "Everybody's name is embroidered."

Colman Domingo's cape wasn't just regal. It was inspired by iconic figures of the past.

Speaking with GQ while getting ready for the Met Gala, Domingo said he always imagined himself wearing blue at the 2025 event.

Then Monica L. Miller, who helped curate this year's Costume Institute exhibit, told the actor that one of the first dandies was a freed slave who dreamed of dancing in "blue superfine wool."

"I literally almost stumbled," Domingo told the publication. "I said, 'He named a color? That's the color I want to wear!'"

He worked with Valentino to create his ensemble, which included a royal-blue cape with a bedazzled chest piece. AndrΓ© Leon Talley inspired its draping, while its sparkling details represented the jewelry and architecture of the Moors and other North African people.

Teyana Taylor's dramatic jacket had song lyrics pressed into its velvet.

The statement piece of her custom Marc Jacobs ensemble was a thick red coat with sharp shoulder pads, pleated draping, and rose embellishments.

Less flashy were its nods to her song "Rose in Harlem."

The phrases "Harlem rose" and "rose out of the concrete" were stamped into velvet pieces that flowed on each side of the jacket.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas made jewelry history.

Chopra Jonas is a Bvlgari ambassador, so she had the privilege of unveiling a new piece β€” a diamond necklace with a massive emerald charm β€” from the jewelry brand at the 2025 Met Gala.

In doing so, she also made history as the first to wear this rare gem, which weighs 241.06 carats and is the largest faceted stone ever set by Bvlgari.

Maluma wore a green watch that was equally flashy and expensive.

Maluma sported an emerald-encrusted watch called the Emerald Billionaire III to complement his blue and green suit from Willy Chavarria.

The timepiece's design was eye-catching, and it was also highly valuable. Jacob & Co., the brand behind the accessory, said it retails for $5 million.

Kerry Washington's ensemble was more daring than you might have realized.

Not only was her custom Simkhai skirt see-through, revealing her undergarments, but its blazer top was also backless.

The cream-colored piece had a circle cutout that was only visible when she turned around. It was also enhanced with a diamond necklace that draped down her back.

Zendaya and Anna Sawai wore white outfits that were extremely similar.

Zendaya hit the red carpet first in a white ensemble from Louis Vuitton. It was tailored perfectly, from its blazer to its bell-bottom pants, and accessorized just as well with a tie and hat.

So, it was a little surprising to see Anna Sawai show up later in a nearly identical outfit. The main difference was that the Japanese actor's suit was more cream-colored and tailored with a looser fit.

The suit was custom-made for her by Christian Dior.

The best and worst looks billionaires wore to the 2025 Met Gala

  • The 2025 Met Gala took place in New York City on Monday.
  • Billionaires pulled up to the year's biggest fashion event in tailored, monochrome outfits.
  • Here are our picks for the best β€” and worst β€” billionaire outfits this year.

The Met Gala, arguably the biggest fashion event of the year, took place on Monday, and its A-list guests came dressed to impress.

Several billionaires attended the annual fundraiser event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

This year's theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," and the dress code was "Tailored for You."

In a sea of menswear-inspired outfits, some attendees stood out for the right β€” and wrong β€” reasons.

Here are the outfits we thought nailed the theme, and those that missed the mark.

Best: Grace Murdoch and Wendi Murdoch

Wendi Murdoch, entrepreneur and ex-wife of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, dazzled at the Met Gala with her daughter, Grace. They both wore fitted white ensembles.

Wendi's two-piece set featured gold embroidery and a high collar reminiscent of a Chinese Qipao. She completed the look with white lace-up boots, a white bag, and a gold headpiece.

Grace's look was simpler β€” a tight-fitted blazer-top, a pleated skirt, a feather brooch, and a white handbag.

Worst: Gustav Wizoe

Norwegian billionaire Gustav Witzoe arrived in an all-white ensemble and a clear briefcase that appeared to be filled with rose petals.

The sheer blazer-cape hybrid trailed behind him, and his look was topped off with accessories, including a white cowboy hat, boots, and gold jewelry.

The outfit looked a tad more whimsical than we would have liked.

Best and worst: Mo Pritzker (best) and John A. Pritzker (worst)

Billionaire investor John A. Pritzker and his wife, Mo Pritzker, arrived in matching full-black outfits.

John Pritzker's ultra-simple black tuxedo and tie combination seemed out of place at the fashion-forward Met.

He was also thoroughly overshadowed by Mo Pritzker, who wore a long, bedazzled blazer paired with a flared black tulle skirt.

Best and Worst: Mellody Hobson (best), George Lucas (worst)

Filmmaker and philanthropist billionaire George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, chairman of Starbucks' board of directors, came to the gala in vastly different suits.

Hobson's gray tweed suit sparkled as she walked, and she was blinged out with bejeweled brooches and chains.

Her husband, however, kept it as simple as possible in a no-frills navy-blue suit, which would look more at home on Wall Street than at the Met.

Worst: Kim Kardashian

Savion Washington/Getty Images

Businesswoman and media personality Kim Kardashian stuck to her wardrobe of tight-fitting pieces. She also kept to her usual corseted silhouette, which she has sported at almost every Met Gala of late.

She wore a leather-textured two-piece set. The top had a low-cut sweetheart neckline and a corset shape, and featured an open back secured with a belt clasp.

She accessorized with diamond necklaces, earrings, chains, and rings, and sported a black top hat.

The outfit fit the theme, but felt unimaginative.

Worst: Tory Burch

Billionaire designer Tory Burch wore a simple white maxi dress to this year's gala. She layered it with black beaded chains, which gave the outfit a spiderweb-esque look.

She kept the rest of the outfit simple with a black and white handbag and diamond earrings.

The outfit did not lean into the "tailored" theme too heavily.

Worst: Anthony Pratt

Anthony Pratt stood out from the sea of monochrome outfits in his bright green suit.

Savion Washington/Getty Images

Australian billionaire businessman Anthony Pratt was a sight to behold, standing out from the mass of black and white-clad crowd in his funky bright green suit.

The suit had the reuse-reduce-recycling logo stamped all over it. He accessorized it with a dark green bowler hat and a walking cane.

Our biggest qualm was the running shoes he wore under the suit.

15 celebrity looks from the 2025 Met Gala that missed the mark — sorry

  • The 2025 Met Gala was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Monday night.
  • There were many standout looks, but a few stars missed the mark with their outfits.
  • Kim Kardashian's look was underwhelming, and Heidi Klum didn't match the night's theme.

The 2025 Met Gala was full of stunning fashion and memorable moments.

The "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" event welcomed actors, musicians, and billionaires to walk the famed steps to celebrate Black dandyism and menswear. Colman Domingo and Lewis Hamilton were among the A-list co-chairs who brought this year's theme to life.

There were a few attendees, however, who missed the mark entirely with their ensembles.

Here are the worst looks of the night, from underwhelming suits to dresses that looked out of place.

Pharrell Williams

We expected more from Pharrell Williams, who was a co-chair on Monday night.

While his fellow co-chairs arrived in everything from blue capes to ivory suits with ancient jewels, Williams stuck to a white jacket with a touch of shimmer and some black slacks.

Kim Kardashian

It's never a dull moment when Kim Kardashian arrives at the Met Gala, but this year, she didn't make much of a splash in her all-black ensemble.

Kardashian sported a bodycon black leather dress designed by Chrome Hearts and a wide-brimmed fedora fit for Carmen Sandiego.

In classic Kardashian fashion, the reality TV star still wanted her outfit to be daring, revealing a low-rise skirt in the back. But her look didn't stand out in a night full of bold suits and regal colors.

Gustav Magnar WitzΓΈe

Theo Wargo/FilmMagic/Getty Images

The Norwegian billionaire stepped on the red carpet in a cream-colored suit, an overcoat seemingly made from latex, a wide-brimmed hat, and Tabi boots.

Overall, the ensemble looked like it needed some tailoring.

He also carried a see-through briefcase filled with vibrant red roses, which made the outfit look more like a costume than a high-fashion moment.

Maya Hawke

Hawke looked pretty as she walked the red carpet in a custom Prada look. However, her pink, stapless dress and sheer, tan cape didn't seem inspired by menswear or Black dandyism.

Sadie Sink

Sink made her Met Gala debut in a black ball gown with lace detailing on the bodice that crossed over her torso, forming sheer sleeves.

The dress was pretty but had a Gothic feel that didn't suit the theme. The full skirt also swallowed Sink, making it look like the dress was wearing her.

Anne Hathaway

It pains us to put the Princess of Genovia on this list, but Anne Hathaway's look just didn't stand out.

The fashion icon kept things simple for fashion's biggest night with her custom Carolina Herrera ensemble, which featured a white dress shirt and a bedazzled black-and-white striped skirt.

A matching sparkling jacket could have added a little more oomph to the overall effect.

Pamela Anderson

You couldn't miss Anderson as she walked the red carpet in a crystal-covered gown from Tory Burch. It was silver, long-sleeved, and wide in shape. She also wore her hair in a new blonde bob.

Though the outfit was fun and a fashion risk for Anderson, it mostly looked out of her comfort zone.

Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum may be the queen of Halloween, but she played it too safe on fashion's biggest night.

The supermodel wore a simple, sleeveless black dress with a flowing train to the Met Gala. The ensemble could have benefited from some flashy accessories or a bold jacket.

Savannah James
Savannah James wears a suit-inspired gown at the Met Gala.

Dia Dipasupil/Getty Images

James attended the Met Gala in her husband LeBron James' stead, as the honorary co-chair pulled out of the event due to a knee injury.

Her mermaid style Thom Browne gown was on-theme, with its suit-jacket bodice and pinstripe pattern.

However, the corset detailing on the bodice didn't look well-tailored to James' body. Some small adjustments to the bodice would have made this a standout look.

Lorde's matching set reminded us of mid-aughts bandage dresses.

Savion Washington/Getty Images

While we loved the silver color and sheen of Lorde's Thom Browne outfit β€”Β which included a bandeau that seemed to defy gravity β€”Β we thought the skirt style was a bit outdated.

We think Lorde's look would have had a bit more edge if she had paired her bandeau with tailored pants instead.

Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow made his Met Gala debut on Monday, but his baggy suit just didn't look right for a night celebrating impeccable tailoring.

His shirt's open collar and creased pants also detracted from the overall ensemble, and his baby-blue Gucci sneakers didn't seem to coordinate with the color scheme.

We wish the Bengals star had opted for something a bit sharper.

Omar Apollo

Wales Bonner created Apollo's suit, which included a cropped jacket, straight trousers, and a sparkling leopard-print shirt.

The patterned top was an unexpected twist for a menswear look, but it clashed with the yellow streaks in his hair. The look might have worked better if he had chosen just one pop of color.

Gayle King

Savion Washington/Getty Images

Just weeks after returning from space, King attended the 2025 Met Gala in a hot-pink halter dress that resembled a deconstructed suit.

Though the dress, designed by Chuk Collins, embraced menswear elements, other style details dated the look; namely, its peplum waist, pink plaid, and sparkling floral appliques.

Its lengthy skirt also could have benefited from a bit more tailoring.

Hailey Bieber
Hailey Bieber at the 2025 Met Gala.

Hailey Bieber's Met Gala look lacked the color and fun that define dandyism.

Instead, she opted for a simple black suit jacket and tights. The ensemble could've benefited from bold accessories or a pattern to add depth to the monochromatic look.

Kendall Jenner

Kendall Jenner arrived at the Met Gala with Hailey Bieber, and her outfit was similarly lackluster.

The model sported a tailored TorishΓ©ju suit jacket with a matching gray skirt.

It was a hue that felt more corporate than representative of dandyism. It could've been better in a pastel tone instead.

  • On Monday, A-listers headed to New York City for the 2025 Met Gala.
  • This year's theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."
  • Couples like Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, and Dua Lipa and Callum Turner stole the show.

On the first Monday in May, celebrities from all over the entertainment industry β€” actors, musicians, models, influencers, athletes, and designers alike β€” came together to celebrate fashion at the 2025 Met Gala.

This year's event, which was co-chaired by Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, ASAP Rocky, and Pharrell Williams, was dedicated to examining Black fashion and menswear, specifically dandyism.

In addition to this celebration, the Met Gala was also date night for some of our favorite celebrity couples, who used the evening to show off their best red-carpet looks.

Here are the best-dressed couples at this year's Met Gala.

Pharrell Williams and his wife, Helen Lasichanh, were among the many couples to opt for black-and-white looks at this year's Met Gala.

  • A-list stars arrived in outfits celebrating the gala's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme.
  • Colman Domingo and Coco Jones wore some of the most eye-catching looks of the night.

Fashion's favorite night of the year has finally arrived: the Met Gala.

The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute was held in New York City on Monday. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour chaired the event, as she does every year, alongside Met Gala co-chairs Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, and ASAP Rocky.

The 2025 Met Gala theme was "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," celebrating menswear and Black dandyism. A-list stars arrived in outfits that celebrated the theme, and some celebrities' outfits stood out more than others.

Take a look at the best-dressed stars at the 2025 Met Gala.

Rihanna, who revealed she was pregnant with her third child on Monday, was among the last celebrities to arrive at the Met Gala, but her ensemble was worth the wait.

The Fenty Beauty mogul's gown took inspiration from menswear with its pinstripe-patterned skirt and gray striped bodice, which called attention to her baby bump. She wore a micro suit jacket adorned with brooches atop the dress, and she added a polka-dot ascot and a wide-brimmed hat to the look.

Palmer's black-and-white ensemble took inspiration from Dorothy Dandridge and was crafted by Vera Wang. The designer made her a top with suit lapels acting as halter straps, a structured bodice, and large pieces of fabric that flowed over her hips.

  • But others have missed the mark with their simple outfits.

What would the Met Gala be without billionaires?

Each year, celebrities, athletes, business people, and more convene on the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps to enter the glamorous ball, which raises money for the Costume Institute.

Many of those attendees also happen to have fortunes totaling billions of dollars. There's Kim Kardashian, Jeff Bezos, and Rihanna, just to name a few.

Here's a look at some of the best looks those wealthy Met Gala guests have worn over the years, as well as a few that could have been better.

Kim Kardashian wore a jaw-dropping minidress in 2019 that remains one of her best Met Gala looks to date.

Thierry Mugler designed the button-up piece, which matched her skin tone to create a nude effect.

Clear crystals that resembled water droplets worked with the garment's cinched bodice fabric, see-through long sleeves, and Kardashian's slick hairstyle to create the illusion she had just taken a plunge in water.

But in typical Kardashian fashion, the outfit wasn't without controversy.

The TV star and businesswoman, who Forbes estimates is worth $1.7 billion, revealed she took corset breathing lessons to wear it and didn't go to the bathroom during the event.

Jeff Bezos ignored the 2019 "Camp: Notes on Fashion" theme entirely.

The Amazon founder, who has an estimated $204 billion fortune, walked the red carpet that year in a classic Tom Ford tuxedo. It featured a black jacket with satin lapels, straight trousers, a white button-up shirt, and a black bow tie.

The suit was sharp and elegant but failed to embody the out-of-the-box, playful styles of camp fashion.

It was especially apparent when the businessman stood next to stars like Kendall Jenner and Jared Leto, who wore dramatic, almost surreal pieces.

Rihanna's papal-inspired ensemble in 2018 has become one of the most iconic Met Gala looks in history.

The musician and Fenty makeup mogul, who is worth $1.4 billion, stepped onto the carpet in a beaded set designed by John Galliano for Maison Margiela.

It consisted of a massive coat that matched its pearl-encrusted minidress, a wrap skirt with pleats, and a pointed headdress that resembled those worn by the Pope.

The designer pieces were not only works of art but also perfectly complemented the night's theme, "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination."

Elon Musk failed to stand out that year in a black-and-white suit.

The Tesla CEO has an estimated fortune of $386 billion, so it would have made sense to see him walk the Met Gala red carpet in an extravagant designer outfit.

But instead, he sported an understated cream-colored blazer over a white top with a black neckline. He also wore plain trousers and shining dress shoes.

There was one interesting feature of his outfit: the phrase "novus ordo seclorum," which translates from Latin to "new world order," written across the back of his jacket.

But because it was stitched in white, the words were barely noticeable.

Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia nailed the 2023 theme.

Guests of the 2023 Met Gala were instructed to dress "in honor of Karl" β€” Karl Lagerfeld, the longtime fashion creative who worked for Fendi, Balmain, ChloΓ©, and most famously, Chanel, before his death in 2019.

And Gebbia did just that. Mirroring Lagerfeld's signature black-and-white aesthetic, the Airbnb cofounder β€” who Forbes estimates is worth $7.9 billion β€” sported a black tuxedo embellished from top to bottom with crystal flowers.

The ensemble stood out from other menswear on the red carpet and was the ideal complement to Isabelle Boemeke's black Bode dress.

Norwegian shareholder Gustav Magnar WitzΓΈe took a fashion risk that missed the mark.

WitzΓΈe, whose net worth is aroundΒ $3.2 billion, is one of the world'sΒ youngest billionairesΒ and one of the most stylish.

But the black-and-white striped Palomo suit he wore to the 2023 Met Gala wasn't his best fashion choice. Its structured jacket had a unique bodice that bubbled at the hips.

But because it was paired with pants that were just a bit too long, the outfit looked more clunky than stylish.

The 2014 Met Gala honored designer Charles James and his impact on women's fashion. So it made sense that year for the rapper and businessman, whose net worth is $2.5 billion, to take a step back with his look.

He wore black dress pants, shining shoes, and a white jacket that was the exact same shade as his undershirt. He completed the outfit with a black bow tie.

Not only was his suit sharp, but it also allowed BeyoncΓ© to shine in her Givenchy gown.

Tiger Woods kept things too simple in 2013.

The golf legend is now a billionaire β€” according to Forbes, his net worth is $1.3 billion as of May 2024. But years before reaching that status, he walked the Met Gala red carpet with his then-girlfriend and Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn.

Unfortunately, the outfit he wore that year hasn't stood the test of time. Plain suits aren't exactly memorable when it comes to Met Gala fashion, and Wood's version almost looked too big on him.

A similar suit in a different color and with better tailoring could have made all the difference.

  • This year's theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," and the dress code is "Tailored for You."
  • We're breaking down the best celebrity arrivals, outfits, and more.

The 2025 Met Gala is here.

Celebrities have started arriving at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to attend the prestigious fundraising event, which is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

In celebration of menswear and Black dandyism, attendees have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored for You," which Vogue has said is open to interpretation. Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and ASAP Rocky will co-chair the event.

Here's what to know about fashion's biggest night.

Lewis Hamilton and Coco Jones are among the best-dressed stars of the night so far.

Although repeat Met Gala attendees make up much of the red carpet, many celebrities are coming to their first-ever Met Gala in 2025.

The Eagles' Saquon Barkley made his Met debut on Monday, as did Colman Domingo's husband, RaΓΊl Domingo. Pianist Gina Alice Redlinger and model Christian Latchman are also attending their first Met Gala this year.

Colman Domingo showed why he's one of the best-dressed men in Hollywood with his regal arrival and on-carpet outfit change.

Everyone knew Colman Domingo was going to bring it to the Met Gala, and the Oscar-nominated actor lived up to the hype on Monday night.

Domingo first arrived on the Met Gala steps in a positively regal blue Valentino cape with a shimmering gold breastplate β€”Β an outfit that would've made the late style icon and OG dandy AndrΓ© Leon Talley extremely proud.

But that wasn't all Domingo had up his sleeve. The "Sing Sing" star revealed there was a perfectly tailored suit underneath, complete with a polka-dot tie and a flower.

Anna Wintour ditched her iconic sunglasses as she walked the blue carpet.

Anna Wintour arrived for fashion's biggest night in head-to-toe pastels.

She sported a baby-blue silk shift dress embroidered with flowers, which coordinated well with the blue carpet covered in daffodils.

Wintour paired her ensemble with a matching blue floor-length coat and a brooch that sparkled from its lapel. She styled her signature bob to perfection, although her usual pair of sunglasses were MIA.

The Vogue editor-in-chief first co-chaired the Met Gala in 1995 and has been at its helm ever since. Under her influence, the gala has become a star-studded spectacle and the cost of a ticket has skyrocketed from around $2,000 to $75,000.

Stars have started arriving, and Teyana Taylor is setting the tone for the night.

Taylor, one of the hosts of Vogue's livestream for the evening, arrived at the gala with the costume designer Ruth Carter.

Her ensemble featured all the hallmarks of dandyism, from a pinstripe suit to a cane and statement hat, and additions like platform shoes and floral brooches that felt uniquely her.

Taylor's whole look was a standout, but her statement cape was the star of the outfit. It trailed behind her dramatically and was embroidered with "Harlem Rose," referencing her 2018 song "A Rose in Harlem."

LeBron James, an honorary chair for the 2025 Met Gala, said he wouldn't be attending the event.

James announced on X on Monday that he would be unable to attend because of a knee injury.

"Hate to miss an historical event," he wrote, adding that his wife, Savannah James, will still be attending. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"

It would have been the basketball star's first Met Gala appearance.

What happens inside the gala is secretive, but we know a few details.

There's much more to the Met Gala than a flashy red carpet.

Inside, attendees first experience a cocktail hour, where they can walk through the museum, see the newest fashion exhibit, and mingle with other stars. They're later seated for a formal dinner, from which they can see the evening's stage show. In the past, musicians including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga have performed. Fingers crossed for a Doechii performance this year.

Of course, the Met Gala isn't open to just anyone. It costs $75,000 for a single ticket and $350,000 for a table. The latter are often purchased by fashion designers, who dress and bring celebrities as guests.

Rihanna's outfits for the 10 Met Galas she has attended to date have become legendary over the years.

She reached icon status at the 2015 Met Gala with the yellow Guo Pei gown she wore. Rihanna also stole the show when she co-chaired the gala in 2018, wearing a Margiela ensemble inspired by the pope.

Rihanna skipped the 2024 gala, but we're hopeful she'll be back this year since her partner, ASAP Rocky, is a co-chair. Her outfit will surely make a splash if she walks the Met Gala red carpet again.

It's always fun to see who shows up at the Met Gala, but there are a few celebs we're really hoping to spot on the red carpet.

This year's co-hosts and committee members are all especially stylish.

We can expect Doechii to have a standout moment, Colman Domingo could easily be the night's best-dressed star, and Tyla might turn heads for the second year in a row.

We're also keeping an eye out for Ayo Edebiri, who looked effortlessly chic in a powder-blue Chanel skirt suit in Vogue's "'Superfine' and Dandy: Iconic Creatives" spread ahead of the gala.

While the rest of the guest list is under wraps, we're hopeful stars like Zendaya, Greta Lee, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez will return to the Met, as they wore some of the most eye-catching looks at the 2024 Met Gala.

It's also common for celebrity couples to make red-carpet debuts at the Met Gala, so we'll be looking out for A-listers walking hand in hand up the steps.

As chair of the gala, Anna Wintour controls who gets an invite.

Vogue's editor in chief first chaired the Met Gala in 1995, and in the 30 years she's been spearheading it, Wintour has become synonymous with the event itself.

She decides who earns a coveted spot on the Met Gala's guest list. The list of celebrities who have never attended a Met Gala has some surprising names.

It was also rumored that she approved the outfits of everyone who attended, though she shut that down in an interview with "Good Morning America" ahead of the 2025 event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she told Michael Strahan. "Some, no idea."

Wintour has never made the co-chairs' exact responsibilities public, but they're said to help plan the event's dress code and dinner. They also promote the event, and alongside the Met Gala's committee members, they are usually the first people to arrive on the event's red carpet.

This year's Met Gala is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

Vogue reported that the theme was inspired by Black dandyism, menswear, and "the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora."

Black dandyism, specifically, is a style and movement that's been embraced by Black men since the 18th century. It typically involves sharp dressing β€” think tailored suits, hats, and canes β€” to assert individuality, culture, and equality.

Met Gala guests have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored For You," though it's open to interpretation. Still, Vogue said we can expect to see a surplus of suits, canes, pocket squares, and other pieces related to dandyism.

This year will also mark the second time the Costume Institute exhibit is focused on menswear. The museum previously hosted the "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" display between November 2003 and February 2004.

  • The Met Gala is being held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday night.
  • This year's theme, "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," celebrates menswear and Black dandyism.
  • The latter is a style and a movement of Black culture, once expressed by men like Langston Hughes.

Fashion's biggest night of the year has finally arrived.

The 2025 Met Gala will take place Monday night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Every year, celebrities flock to the gala for the annual fundraiser, which raises money for the museum's Costume Institute, in high-fashion ensembles.

The Met Gala has a different theme each year. For the 2025 event, it's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style." As reported by Vogue, the theme was designed to celebrate menswear and Black dandyism, which is both a style and an ethos that dates back to the 18th century.

Here's everything you need to know about Black dandyism and how the Met Gala will honor it.

Black dandyism, explained

Put simply, a dandy is a man who's dressed sharply. He's refined, has excellent manners, and is perfectly groomed.

Beau Brummell, a figure of Regency England, is widely considered the first dandy. His care for his personal appearance inspired other men of the late 18th and 19th centuries to employ good hygiene and experiment with trendy garments, leaving behind aristocratic ways of dressing.

Black dandyism, though, goes beyond fashion and aesthetics.

As Ty Gaskins reported for Vogue, what's often described as a style is better defined as a "fashion revolution" β€” one that's simultaneously an act of protest, a creation of culture, and a celebration of individuality for Black men.

"In a world where Black people have been marginalized, the dandy became a figure who defied the rigid categories of race and class that sought to confine them," Gaskins wrote.

Langston Hughes sits in a chair while wearing a black suit and tie.

Black dandyism grew in the post-Emancipation era, when former slaves and servants took on dandyism β€” or dressing in sharp suits, polished shoes, and accessories like hats and ties β€” as a form of assertion by assimilation.

However, Vogue reported that the movement truly blossomed during the Harlem Renaissance when figures like Langston Hughes and Cab Calloway emerged, changing both society at large and Black dandyism specifically.

Their work and outfits inspired modern stars like AndrΓ© 3000 to embrace Black dandyism as a signature style and essence. Movies like "Sinners" have also embraced Black dandyism this year.

Colman Domingo and other stars will bring this theme to life

When Vogue announced the 2025 Met Gala theme in October, it reported that it took inspiration from Monica Miller's book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity," published in 2009.

Both the theme and the Costume Institute's Spring exhibition will examine the impact style had on the Black diaspora, zeroing in on Black dandyism.

The Met Gala itself has never focused on menswear, and the museum's forthcoming exhibit is only the second in the Costume Institute's history to do so, following its "Men in Skirts" exhibit, which ran from November 2003 to February 2004.

The 2025 Met Gala also has a "Tailored For You" dress code, designed to encourage attendees to honor the theme and reflect their personal style.

This year's Met Gala co-chairs β€” Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and ASAP Rocky β€” will help to set the tone for the night with their looks, as all are known for their high-fashion approaches to menswear.

Vogue said it hopes attendees take "creative interpretation" of the dress code, though suits and accessories typically associated with men, from pocket squares to statement hats, will be popular on the red carpet.

  • Over the weekend, numerous parties were held to celebrate the 2025 Met Gala.
  • Colman Domingo and Pharrell Williams took fashion-forward approaches to menswear.
  • Cynthia Erivo and Sabrina Carpenter also wore eye-catching outfits.

The 2025 Met Gala doesn't start until Monday night, but celebrities already spent the weekend celebrating.

Stars will soon gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the annual Met Gala, a fundraiser for the museum's Costume Institute.

For the 2025 gala, A-list attendees will dress for the event's "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, which honors Black Dandyism and menswear.

Stars won't reveal how they're channeling the Met Gala theme until they walk the red carpet, but the outfits they wore to pre-parties for the event over the weekend might offer clues.

Take a look at some of the best outfits stars wore to pre-Met Gala events.

Versace designed the actor's sleeveless slip, which was covered from top to bottom in translucent sequins. The dress also had a cowl neckline and the brand's signature hardware in silver across each strap.

She wore it with black patent-leather kitten heels, a micro purse in black, and small diamond stud earrings.

Anne Hathaway embraced menswear, matching the 2025 Met Gala theme.

Also in Versace, Hathaway wore a white button-down blouse, a loose black blazer with a gold logo embellishment at its pocket, and straight-leg trousers.

Her party look was cool and chic on its own, but it became more feminine thanks to her choice of accessories.

The actor carried a sparkling gold purse, sported large sunglasses on her face, and donned heeled sandals with beaded detailing.

Ariana DeBose was there in a blazer-style dress.

Her black Versace number had long sleeves, a deep V-neckline, crystal buttons, and an above-the-knee skirt.

The garment gave a feminine edge to a classic menswear piece.

It was her silver accents, however, that really stole the show. To complete her look, she added thick sunglasses, silver sandals with bow straps, and a shimmering purse with ring handles.

Oil heiress Ivy Getty wore one of the night's most daring looks.

Getty wore a yellow Versace minidress with long sleeves, an all-over shell print, and a plunging neckline that revealed the middle section of her torso. One of Versace's signature gold safety pins held the garment together.

She completed the look with classic accessories, including black pumps, a crystal anklet with a cross charm, a gold purse, and hoop earrings.

For the Moda Operandi party, the "Espresso" singer stepped out in a sleeveless Versace dress that hugged her body and shimmered in the light.

It had sheer sequins all over its baby-blue fabric, a gold safety pin that pulled it together at the hips, and a thigh-high slit in its skirt. For shoes, Carpenter wore her signature platforms in the form of tan sandals.

The fashion designer wore one of the brightest looks of the night: a hot-pink suit over a yellow blouse printed with shell images.

She also wore platform Versace heels in the same pink shade, dangling crystal earrings, and rectangular sunglasses with cherry-red frames.

Domingo attended pre-Met Gala events throughout the weekend, and his cream suit from Eleven Sixteen for Wayman + Micah's party spoke directly to the 2025 Met Gala theme.

The bold tailoring of his cream suit represented Black dandyism, while the thick material and checked pattern made it feel modern. Domingo's tie coordinated with the suit, and his white shoes completed the outfit effortlessly.

Taraji P. Henson put a sparkly spin on a jacket and pants at LaQuan Smith's pre-Met Gala party on Sunday.

On Sunday, Henson also played with the silhouette of a suit, arriving at the LaQuan Smith Met Gala party in a fitted jacket and matching wide-legged trousers.

The jacket was open on Henson's chest, mirroring the pointed hemline that cinched her waist. Sparkles covered the entire outfit, giving it a glitzy edge.

The same night, Pharrell Williams was spotted arriving at Anna Wintour's Met Gala dinner in a more casual look.

Williams is also a Met Gala co-chair this year, and he arrived at the dinner that Wintour hosts the night before the event in a mix of high- and low-fashion garments.

He paired a green blouse and a brown sweatshirt with khaki trousers and a Louis Vuitton trench coat. His coat matched his bag, and Williams added sunglasses and a yellow cap to the look.

The ensemble effortlessly blended styles, perhaps offering a clue as to how Williams might be approaching his Met Gala look.

Erivo's Saint Laurent suit was double-breasted, and the coordinating pants flared wide. Her blouse underneath featured a colorful pattern of stripes, bringing out the purple hue of her tie.

Tinted sunglasses and Christian Louboutin shoes completed the look.

Everything Kendall Jenner has worn at the Met Gala, ranked from least to most daring

  • Kendall Jenner has attended the Met Gala nine times since 2014.
  • She's worn glamorous gowns, a chic jumpsuit, and multiple daring looks.
  • One of her boldest ensembles included a massive skirt with black ruffles and a see-through tank top.

Kim Kardashian might be the queen of daring Met Gala looks, but her sister Kendall Jenner isn't far behind.

The model has attended the event consistently since 2014, and her ensembles have become bolder each year.

Here's a look at Jenner's Met Gala wardrobe, ranked from least to most daring.

Topshop designed her strapless dress, which hugged her body up top and extended into a wider skirt at the bottom. The design was chic and elegant, but not daring.

Jenner also carried a sparkling clutch, wore a diamond necklace, and paired minimal makeup with a swept-back hairstyle.

Her Off-White jumpsuit in 2018 was a bit bolder, but not the most memorable.

The off-the-shoulder jumpsuit had long pant legs that extended into short trains at the bottom, and a gauzy top with see-through sleeves.

To complement the outfit, she added a long ponytail, diamond earrings, and glamorous makeup.

But the year before, she chose something even bolder: a green gown that revealed her chest.

Not only did the sparkling dress have open panels on each side of her chest β€” which were held together with crisscross straps β€” but its thin fabric was also semi-sheer.

The Calvin Klein Collection crafted the mock-neck garment.

Jenner's 2024 look was daring from the front and back.

To stay in line with the "Garden of Time" dress code, Jenner wore an archival Givenchy gown made by Alexander McQueen in 1999.

It had a deep V-neckline embellished with brown trim and an arrow-shaped panel of mesh at her hips that extended even farther at her backside.

The sparkling black gown was also semi-sheer, especially across its floor-length skirt.

Her two-piece outfit at the 2022 event was especially bold.

Designed by Prada, Jenner's all-black look included a sheer, netted crop top and a voluminous skirt decorated with layers of ruching.

Jenner also bleached her eyebrows for the event, adding more edge to her already-sharp look.

But one of Jenner's most memorable Met Gala moments was in 2019.

She wore an orange, sleeveless dress that was custom-made for her by Versace. Its see-through fabric was decorated with beaded fringe, and its skirt had layers of orange feathers that reached the floor.

Of course, the sheer detailing made her dress stand out on the red carpet, but so did its giant, feathered neckpiece that wrapped around her shoulders and reached her wrist.

She created the illusion of being naked with her sparkling dress in 2021.

Both the gown's see-through mesh and matching bodysuit complemented her skin tone, creating the illusion that she was wearing only rows of diamonds.

On Instagram, the 818 tequila founder said the Givenchy design was inspired by another iconic gown: the one Audrey Hepburn wore in "My Fair Lady."

She took the most risks in 2017 with a daring La Perla dress.

The black dress had a slit in the middle of its see-through bodice, and its wrapped design created a thigh-high slit in its skirt.

But it was even more daring from the back. When Jenner turned around, you could see that her gown was backless and revealed a thong she wore underneath.

The worst Met Gala looks of all time

  • The 2025 Met Gala is almost upon us.
  • The event is fashion's biggest night, but some A-list attendees miss the mark with their looks.
  • Some stars have ignored past themes, while others picked outfits that looked like costumes.

Fashion enthusiasts are rejoicing, as it's finally time for the 2025 Met Gala.

The annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute will take place on May 5. For the 2025 event, A-list attendees will dress for the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style" theme, putting their spin on menswear and dandyism.

Plenty of stars wear stunning outfits, but it's easy to miss the mark with fashion for the night. From misinterpreting the Met Gala theme to ignoring it altogether, some stars just don't know how to dress for the event.

Take a look back at some of the worst Met Gala looks of all time.

In 2008, Jennifer Lopez wore a teal dress that would have worked for a mother of a bride, not a Met Gala attendee.

Jennifer Lopez's Met Gala outfits have gotten bolder since her 2008 appearance.

Alberta Ferretti designed Lopez's dress that year. Its single strap was decorated with a crystal appliquΓ© extending across its neckline. The embellishment dated the gown, while its tiered fabric made it look simple instead of luxurious.

A different dress in the same teal shade would have worked better for the musician.

Gwyneth Paltrow sported a pink gown in 2013 that was full of color but lacking style.

Valentino created the hot-pink number Paltrow wore that year. It had long sleeves, a see-through stripe of mesh above the chest, and a wide skirt that circled around her.

Though its shock of color was fun, the gown's simple, shapeless design left something to be desired.

Paltrow also wore minimal makeup, delicate jewelry, and her hair in a casual ponytail β€” but it was all too simple to suit her dramatic dress.

A bolder beauty look, a high bun, or statement earrings and rings could have improved the outfit.

Kristen Stewart also attended the Met Gala that year, but her lace outfit didn't evoke the event's punk theme.

The "Twilight" star walked the 2013 red carpet in a Stella McCartney jumpsuit. The maroon piece was long-sleeved and crafted with sheer lace sections from top to bottom.

The shiny fabric was also puffed at the hips, creating an exaggerated effect.

Though Stewart looked sharp in her runway-ready outfit, it didn't match the year's "PUNK: Chaos to Couture" theme. The actor also has a naturally edgy style, so not displaying it in full force was a missed opportunity.

There was too much going on with the ensemble Brie Larson wore at the 2014 Met Gala.

The Marvel actor sparkled her way down the red carpet that year.

She wore a Prada ensemble that included a blue-and-gold tank top with sequins arranged in various patterns, straight-legged pants with even more sequins, and classic black pumps.

It's tough to go wrong with all-over sparkles, but the mismatched shapes they were styled in clashed.

Her golden outfit also had a regal flair, which didn't work with her futuristic bun hairstyle.

Kim Kardashian, on the other hand, played it too safe.

Many of Kim Kardashian's Met Gala looks have been iconic. Unfortunately, the blue Lanvin gown she sported in 2014 wasn't one of them.

Designed by Alber Elbaz, the strapless dress had black satin lining, a matching belt, pockets at the hips, and a thigh-high slit.

She wore the piece with strappy sandals, dangling earrings, a wavy hairstyle, and neutral makeup.

Though Kardashian looked pretty, her overall outfit was dull and forgettable.

For the 2015 event, Katy Perry wore a graffiti-inspired dress that didn't fit the "China: Through the Looking Glass" theme.

Katy Perry was made to wear Moschino β€” and she has at most Met Galas she's attended over the past decade.

Her 2015 selection from the brand, though, missed the mark. She wore a black, strapless dress with a deep sweetheart neckline, a long bodice, and a peplum band above a full skirt.

The latter piece was especially eye-catching, as it was decorated with a colorful print that looked like the dress had been covered in graffiti. She also carried a purse shaped like a can of spray paint.

Because the event was meant to honor Chinese culture and fashion, it didn't make sense for her to wear the quirky ensemble that night.

Sarah Jessica Parker also missed the mark at the 2015 event with a headpiece that sparked backlash.

The actor arrived at the Met Gala in a custom H&M dress. The black gown was innocuous, with its one-shoulder design and colorful fabric ribbons on one side.

However, Parker accessorized the gown with a red headpiece designed by Philip Treacy that many thought reinforced racist stereotypes about Asian women.

Parker never addressed the criticism publicly.

Selena Gomez should have saved her 2016 Met Gala look for a street-style moment.

Louis Vuitton designed her black-and-white ensemble, which consisted of a polka-dot midi dress, a leather bralette worn on top, and lace-up patent-leather boots.

The outfit was fun, feminine, and perfect for a street-style day in New York City.

However, it wasn't as effective at the Met Gala, where the look felt underwhelming. It also wasn't the best representation of the "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" theme.

Kylie Jenner tried to put an edgy twist on her glamourous look in 2016, but ultimately failed.

Olivier Rousteing created the crystal-covered gown Jenner wore that year. It had long sleeves, shoulder pads, a form-fitting bodice with all-over cutouts, and a floor-length skirt with sparkling fringe.

Jenner's glam makeup perfectly complemented the gown's silver shine, putting a glamorous spin on the look.

However, the various shapes of crystal arrangements on the gown β€” its epaulette-style shoulder design and the imitation corset across the waist, for example β€” made it look more medieval than anything.

Madonna's outfit was daring, but distracting.

At the 2016 Met Gala, Madonna wasn't afraid to show some skin. She wore a black Givenchy gown made from see-through lace, revealing everything from her shoulders to her thighs.

In theory, that should have worked for the boundary-pushing superstar, especially when paired with thigh-high leather boots and silver jewelry.

The outfit missed the mark, though, thanks to two round cutouts across the chest and a high-cut bottom that revealed her backside β€” both looked more silly than provocative.

It didn't seem like Harry Styles put much effort into his 2019 Met Gala outfit.

The 2019 Met Gala marks the first and only time Styles walked the famous Met steps for the annual event.

Unfortunately, his outfit that day was a letdown, especially considering he was a Met Gala co-chair that year. He wore a one-piece Gucci jumpsuit that was almost plain black. Its only interesting features were its flowing mesh sleeves with lace at the wrists and its ruffled neckpiece.

Styles would have been better off experimenting with color of a more daring silhouette on the pink carpet that year.

There was nothing campy about Karlie Kloss's gold minidress that year.

In 2019, Kloss famously posted a photo of herself in the reflection of a mirror with the caption "looking camp right in the eye." So, fans expected the model to have a standout fashion moment at the Met Gala.

Instead, she arrived in a gold, strapless minidress with short, puffy black sleeves. Though it was designed by Dapper Dan in collaboration with Gucci, it looked more like a party dress you could find in any mall.

Nick Jonas wore a white suit and silver accessories that didn't match the theme or feel authentic to his style.

Though he was probably attempting to match the camp theme with his dramatic Dior look, Jonas looked more like he was wearing a costume.

A piece of white fabric wrapped around his body and arm, while his undershirt and boots were covered with the same silver sparkles.

The Cartier jewelry he wore β€” from an ear cuff to statement rings β€” only added to the silly flair.

Ciara's Dundas gown for the 2021 Met Gala was fun, but it would have been more appropriate at a different event.

Ciara arrived at the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" gala in a sparkly, lime green gown from Dundas.

The gown was designed to look like Russell Wilson's football jersey, nodding to Ciara's husband through the number three on the bodice. The "Goodies" singer even carried a football-shaped clutch with the outfit.

It was a fun outfit, but it celebrated Wilson more than the Met Gala theme. The gown would have been better suited for the ESPY Awards.

The same year, Evan Mock detracted from his Thom Browne ensemble with a bold mask.

Mock arrived in a Thom Browne suit that put a whimsical spin on traditional menswear. The suit featured shorts instead of pants and safety pin detailing on the jacket.

The shorts exposed his dress socks, and Mock wore an array of rings, elevating the look. However, the black mask he added to the outfit, which included a mohawk and covered his head completely, was distracting.

The look would have been more of a success without the mask.

Lourdes Leon's bright-pink look for the "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" gala didn't fit the theme either.

Madonna's daughter made her Met Gala debut in a hot-pink Moschino gown designed by Jeremy Scott.

The bodice featured a bikini-style bra and crisscrossing fabric across her abdomen. The sarong skirt flowed to the floor, and the dress was covered in heavy beading.

Thanks to its color and halter neckline, the gown evoked early 2000s fashion, but the reference wasn't strong enough to make it feel on-theme.

Dan Levy's 2021 ensemble had a sweet message, but the design was overwhelming.

Levy attended the 2021 Met Gala in a custom JW Anderson ensemble designed to look like Earth. A depiction of two men kissing made up the bodice, and the image took inspiration from AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz, celebrating queer people in the US and globally.

The message was sweet, but the ensemble's design overshadowed it with its puffy sleeves, printed pants, glittery fabric on Levy's waist, and black boots.

The outfit might have been better if it had emphasized the embroidery on Levy's bodice instead of taking a more-is-more approach.

At the 2022 Met Gala, Cara Delevingne's body paint-based outfit offered shock factor but didn't feel like the best approach to the theme.

The "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" Met Gala had a "white tie, gilded glamour" dress code, encouraging celebrities to dress to the nines.

Delevingne took that theme literally, arriving in a red Dior Haute Couture tuxedo with no shirt. Gold paint covered her body, and she carried a cane with gold detailing.

Her look was certainly a pun on the dress code, but it didn't make a fashion statement. If Delevingne had worn the red suit with a shirt and gold accessories, it could have been great on the Met Gala red carpet.

Likewise, Nicki Minaj's Burberry look had too much going on.

Minaj's Burberry strapless gown was made of black feathers and cinched on her waist with an oversize belt. Her chest and arms were covered in body gems, and she wore black leather pants beneath the dress and a black hat.

The outfit had so much going on that it was hard to know where to look. If Minaj had ditched the hat and pants, the ensemble would have looked effortlessly chic, but it was just too busy as she wore it.

Ben Platt's white suit for the 2023 Met Gala looked like it didn't fit well.

The "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" Met Gala honored the late designer's work, and Platt turned to Lagerfeld's love of tweed with his custom Wiederhoeft suit.

Platt's cropped jacket and flared pants were made of white tweed, with black detailing on the pant seams and the jacket's neckline and cuffs. He wore a corset-style blouse beneath the jacket, and the gap between the jacket and the wider pants created the illusion that Platt's waist was dramatically small.

The waist illusion was effective, but came at the cost of Platt's jacket and pants looking stiff. Likewise, his blouse was exposed underneath the hem of the jacket sleeves, making it seem like the outfit didn't fit.

Florence Pugh's headpiece for the same Met Gala was distracting from her overall ensemble.

Pugh's Valentino dress for the gala was a solid choice. The white gown had a dramatic train, and a black bow tied the strapless bodice together, playing up Lagerfeld's favorite color scheme.

However, Pugh's feathered headpiece overshadowed the gown. It sat way above Pugh's head and created a diamond shape on her forehead.

The actor debuted her shaved head at the gala, so it made sense she wanted to emphasize it with a headpiece. Still, the one she chose was so dramatic that it took away from the rest of the look.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes' ensembles for their Met Gala debut in 2023 didn't fit the theme.

It seemed like the couple didn't attempt to fit the Karl Lagerfeld-inspired theme with their Hugo Boss looks, aside from sticking to black and white color schemes.

Brittany Mahomes' white gown had silver detailing on the off-the-shoulder neckline, which coordinated with her silver pumps. Patrick Mahomes accessorized his black suit with silver jewelry, black loafers with silver detailing, and black sunglasses.

They could have worn the outfits on any red carpet, which isn't ideal for a Met Gala look.

The blend of styles in Ariana DeBose's Joseph Altuzarra dress for the 2023 gala didn't work together.

DeBose wrote on Instagram that her gown was designed to offer a modern spin on silhouettes from the 1930s and '40s, speaking to Lagerfeld's celebration of retro styles.

A faux-fur-trimmed hood created the neon-yellow gown's off-the-shoulder neckline. The dress cinched DeBose's waist with elastic fabric before flowing into a mermaid-style skirt.

The gown's bright color and jacket-style bodice weren't obvious in their nods to the past, so it looked a bit out of place at the Met Gala. Perhaps a different color or less modern detailing might have made the dress a better fit for the event.

Lil Nas X's nearly nude ensemble for the 2023 Met Gala felt out of place at an event paying homage to a late designer.

Pat McGrath covered Lil Nas X in head-to-toe silver body paint and crystals, transforming him into a red carpet take on Lagerfeld's beloved cat, Choupette.

A mask and boots completed his look, which was certainly eye-catching but didn't strike the tone of Lagerfeld's work. The ensemble might have been more fitting at the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" Met Gala.

Billionaire Gustav Magnar WitzΓΈe's outfit for the 2024 Met Gala looked more like a costume than a red-carpet outfit.

The 2024 "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" Met Gala had a "Garden of Time" dress code. WitzΓΈe, a Norwegian billionaire, dressed to the theme with an Atelier Versace look consisting of a sparkly bodysuit, a leg-baring skirt, and a dramatic cape.

The ensemble had an ancient Greek feel, but rather than paying homage to the time period, it looked like WitzΓΈe was just dressing up as someone from the era.

The beading on Rita Ora's Tom Ford dress fit the 2024 theme, but the message got lost in her styling.

Ora's column dress had a boat neckline and then cinched inward, exposing her legs. The gown was made of strands of colorful beads, which dated back to the first and second centuries BC, as Ora told Vogue during its livestream for the 2024 event.

The material was a great fit for the "Garden of Time" dress code, but Ora's styling didn't emphasize it. Instead, the nude bodysuit she wore under the gown and her slicked-back hair became the focus of the dress.

Ora should have let the dress shine through her styling to nail the theme.
