  • The IPO raised $4.6 billion, primarily to fund its European expansion.
  • CATL competes with Tesla and BYD in the EV battery supplier market.

Key Tesla supplier CATL rose 13% in its Hong Kong trading debut on Tuesday morning.

The world's largest battery maker filed to go public in Hong Kong earlier this year, primarily to fund its European expansion. CATL has been listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange since 2018.

The initial public offering raised HK$35.7 billion, or $4.6 billion, according to a company filing. That size makes it one of the largest global listings of the year. The stock was listed at HK$263 per share.

Companies pursue dual listings — where a company is traded on more than one exchange — because it gives them access to more capital and lets their shares trade for a longer time if the exchanges are in different time zones. Hong Kong listings are a popular option for Chinese companies because they allow international investors to buy stock.

In a document filed with the Hong Kong exchange in February, CATL said that part of the money raised will be used to build a $7.6 billion battery plant in Hungary. The rest will be used for daily business. CATL has a partnership with Jeep and Fiat maker Stellantis in Spain.

CATL is a major supplier to Tesla, selling lithium-iron phosphate batteries to its Shanghai factory.

Last week, HSBC analysts led by Elaine Chen wrote in a note that CATL has a "dominating domestic position" in the EV battery market, enabled by "continuous products upgrade and innovation."

They added that they see the company "unlock more volumes opportunities in Europe on its superior-than-peers affordability and leading lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology."

CATL is ramping up competition against Tesla and Chinese EV star BYD.

Late last month, CATL unveiled a new battery it said can out-charge BYD and Tesla. It launched an updated version of its Shenxing battery, which it said allows electric vehicles to add 520 kilometers, or 323 miles, of range in just five minutes of charging.

EV companies are trying to cut charge times to entice buyers who are wary of switching to electric.

In January, the Department of Defense added CATL to its list of "Chinese military companies" operating in the United States. CATL denied it had any association with the Chinese military and said it was prepared to contest the decision with legal action if necessary.

Joe Biden's Family Tragedies, Health Struggles Through the Years

19 May 2025 at 13:49

Former President Joe Biden and his family have endured several tragedies over the years.

Biden married his first wife, Neilia Hunter, in 1966. The couple shared two sons, Joseph “Beau” Biden III and Hunter Biden, and a daughter, Naomi “Amy” Biden.

Weeks after Joe was elected to the Senate in 1972, Neilia and their three kids were involved in a car accident. Beau and Hunter survived the crash but Neilia and Amy tragically died.

Years after mourning his wife and daughter, Joe met Jill Biden. The couple wed in 1975 and welcomed daughter Ashley Biden in 1981.

Throughout his struggles, Joe remained a dedicated public servant. He served as a Senator from 1973 to 2009 before becoming Barack Obama’s vice president. In 2020, Joe was elected as the 46th president of the United States.

Joe initially was going to run for a second term. However, in July 2024, Joe withdrew from the election after he received concerns from the public about his age and health. (Joe was 81 years old at the time.)

In May 2025, news broke that Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Keep scrolling to see the tragedies that Joe and his family have endured over the years:

Neilia Hunter and Naomi Biden’s Deaths

In December 1972, Neilia, Amy, Beau and Hunter were involved in a car accident while Christmas shopping. The Biden family’s station wagon was hit by a tractor-trailer after Neilia accidentally drove into the path of the oncoming vehicle.

Neilia, Amy, Beau and Hunter were pulled from the wreckage and rushed to Wilmington General Hospital. Neilia and Amy were pronounced dead on arrival. They were 30 and 13 months, respectively.

Biden’s sons survived the accident but sustained injuries. Beau had a broken leg while Hunter had a fractured skull.

“The pain … seemed unbearable in the beginning, and it took me a long time to heal, but I did survive the punishing ordeal,” Joe wrote of the tragedy in his 2017 memoir, Promise Me, Dad. “I made it through, with a lot of support, and reconstructed my life and my family.”

Joe Biden’s Brain Surgeries

In 1988, Joe began to suffer from severe neck pain, which was caused by a leaking intracranial berry aneurysm. While recovering from surgery, Joe suffered from a pulmonary embolism. The procedures and recovery kept Joe away from the Senate for seven months.

Beau Biden’s Cancer Battle and Death

In 2013, Beau was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, which is a type of cancer that starts as a growth of cells in the brain or spinal cord, per Mayo Clinic. Beau underwent surgery to remove a lesion. He also completed radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Two years after his diagnosis, Beau died following a recurrence of brain cancer. He was 46.

Hunter shared in his 2021 memoir, Beautiful Things, that he battled addiction throughout his adult life. He shared that his struggles started with alcohol when he was a teen before turning to crack cocaine. Hunter explained that he believed his struggle stemmed from losing his mother and sister.

“There were also times, I have to admit, when I felt as if no one else could understand my pain. It seemed narcissistic even to contemplate. Yet that didn’t make it feel any less true,” he penned. “Believing that your pain is exceptional doesn’t lessen anyone else’s. Pain is our universal condition. People can go through life without finding love, but no one lives long without experiencing real hurt. It can connect us or isolate us.”

Hunter has sought treatment for his addiction struggles and faced several legal issues.

Joe Biden’s Withdrawal From the 2024 Election

In July 2024, Joe announced that he was withdrawing from the 2024 presidential election after the public raised concerns about his age and health following a debate against Donald Trump.

“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he wrote in a letter shared via X.

Joe subsequently endorsed his vice president, Kamala Harris, to run in his place. Harris ultimately lost to Trump.

Months after leaving the White House, Joe was diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,” read a May 2025 statement from Biden’s personal office to CNN. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

The statement added that Joe and his family were “reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

After news broke about his condition, Joe took to social media to break his silence.

“Cancer touches us all,” he captioned a May 2025 Instagram post. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”

Amid Lively’s ongoing legal battle with Baldoni, an insider told Us that Hadid has “always had a closer friendship with Taylor and stands by her.” The source shared, “She has been a very loyal friend to Taylor, and they have been best friends for a decade now.”

The insider noted that Hadid “hasn’t necessarily chosen sides” between Lively and Swift, but rather that the current status of their inner circle is a “reflection of the closeness her and Taylor have shared over the years.”

The source added that Hadid and Lively “really haven’t been as close in almost a year” but there are “no hard feelings” between the two.

“As Taylor has begun to distance herself from Blake, Gigi has naturally done the same,” the insider said. “The shift wasn’t abrupt, but gradual and organic change in dynamics.”

While Swift and Lively’s friendship has allegedly changed amid the legal battle, Hadid “doesn’t want to be involved at all,” the source said. “They haven’t been in touch much this year and it does have everything to do with the lawsuit.”

Texas gang members sentenced for human smuggling after high-speed border chases

Two South Texas gang members have been sentenced for human smuggling, following a series of high-speed chases at the border that involved one of the gang members crashing his car into the Rio Grande and swimming to Mexico to escape.

A Monday statement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the two human smugglers, Juan Miguel Regalado, 28, and Samuel Grajeda Jr., 21, are members of "Puro Tango Blast," a local Texas gang.

The two were sentenced on May 15 after being convicted of conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants, following an investigation by ICE, U.S. Border Patrol Laredo Sector and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

U.S. District Judge John Kazen imposed a 66-month sentence for Regalado, while Grajeda previously received a 30-month imprisonment as well as a consecutive six months for violating the terms of his supervised release for a previous alien transporting conviction. Both must also serve three years of supervised release.

Both men admitted to involvement in the human smuggling conspiracy.

PROGRESSIVE PROSECUTOR LETS ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT TEEN OFF EASY AFTER 90-MPH CRASH THAT KILLED 24-YEAR-OLD WOMAN

According to the ICE statement, the investigation began April 20, 2024, when a group of suspected illegal aliens entered a green Tahoe in a sector of the border just north of Laredo, Texas.

The statement said that Regalado was driving and led law enforcement on a high-speed chase, during which "multiple individuals jumped out of the vehicle."

Driving up to 100 miles per hour, Regalado crashed the Tahoe into the Rio Grande and then proceeded to escape by swimming across the river to Mexico.

Authorities continued to monitor the area over the next several months. In November 2024, another group of illegal aliens entered a white Ford Taurus parked in the area. Authorities followed the vehicle until another vehicle, a black Mercedes, cut them off. ICE said that the two vehicles were driven by Grajeda and Regalado.

A traffic stop of the Ford Taurus led to another vehicle pursuit in which Grajeda crashed into a bystander’s vehicle. Law enforcement eventually discovered the Ford Taurus abandoned in a north Laredo neighborhood. Authorities then found four illegal aliens and Grajeda and Regalado within the vicinity of the abandoned vehicle.

Both gang members are currently in custody.

Craig Larrabee, ICE Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio Special Agent in Charge, said that "these sentences reflect the serious consequences awaiting those who engage in human smuggling and endanger public safety."

Larrabee said that "Tango Blast gang members put countless lives at risk during these reckless pursuits" and that "through strong collaboration with our federal and state law enforcement partners, we remain committed to dismantling violent criminal organizations and protecting our communities."
