Al Trautwig, famed NYC sports broadcaster, dead at 68

24 February 2025 at 11:10

Al Trautwig, a sports commentator who covered the New York Yankees, New York Knicks and New York Rangers, has died, his former colleague revealed in a post on social media Monday. He was 68.

Alan Hahn made the post about the MSG Networks broadcaster.Β

"I’m sad to share the news that we lost a legendary voice in sports. But we lost a lot more than that," he wrote on X. "He was not only a friend, but a mentor and a teacher. He was, personally, one of my biggest resources of support when I moved into this career."

Trautwig was a longtime broadcaster on MSG Network as he covered the pregame and the postgame shows for the Knicks and Rangers. He would occasionally do play-by-play commentary as well.

He covered the NHL on USA Network and Versus and hosted "SportsNite" on ABC Sports early in his career. But fans of New York City sports knew him from his coverage of the area’s top teams. In addition to his Knicks and Rangers coverage, Trautwig also did pre and postgame coverage for the Yankees before they moved from MSG to the YES Network.

He worked for MSG Networks until 2021.

"MSG Networks is truly saddened by the news of Al Trautwig’s passing," the station told the New York Post. "Al was a staple on MSG Networks’ Knicks, Rangers and Yankees coverage for more than 30 years, and his passion for the teams he covered was undeniable.Β

"He leaves behind one of the great legacies in New York sports broadcasting history. Our thoughts and prayers are with Al’s family and friends."

Fans of Trautwig also weighed in on social media.

Trautwig told Newsday last year he underwent treatment for cancer and held out hope he was going to recover fully from the illness.Β

A cause of death was not revealed.

So, what did YOU accomplish last week?

Please tell Elon Musk five things you did last week.

Let's say you're a great employee. You're diligent, hardworking, effective, and well-liked around the water cooler. You file your expense reports on time, remember the names of your coworkers' kids, and never microwave fish in the kitchenette.

Or maybe you're bad at your job and a nightmare to be around. I don't know your life, and I don't judge. Either way.

Suddenly, your boss's boss's boss (or some vague HR group but not quite HR) is asking you for a list of five things you did last week. And if you don't respond to the email by midnight, it will count as your resignation.

I know this sounds improbable, but just close your eyes and picture it.

So, what do you do?

Do you say, "screw this," and not reply because it seems like a ridiculous mind game meant to intimidate you and devalue the actual work you do?

Do you respond with some form of malicious compliance, listing off some stupid answer β€” maybe just a single word for each bullet point, or something 10,000 words long and trollish? Maybe use this AI chatbot?

Or do you just accept that this is another annoying requirement at work, like a two-hour compliance training webinar or eating sheet cake at 11 a.m. for the boss's birthday, and justΒ do the thing because you have to?

Or perhaps you view this completely differently β€” a welcome chance to boast about your accomplishments and remind your managers that you are a valued contributor to the team and the mission.

Perhaps it's even a chance to point out that you've been doing duties that are above and beyond your job description. Hey, you could even use it as a chance to knife your colleagues in the back and write down, "Taught Steve how to add rows in Excel (again)."

(Steve, you know what you did, and you had it coming.)

I want to know what you, an actual human person, would do in this situation. Obviously, there are many federal workers who are figuring this out and weighing these options right now. But, honestly, think hard within yourself and, like … what would you do?

Tell us! Here's a Google form to fill out. It's got a poll and space for you to tell us what you'd say. It's anonymous (unless you want to tell us who you are) and easy. Or at least I guarantee it'll be more painless than actually having to do your real job.

  • Joann said it has reached a deal to sell its assets and wind down operations.
  • Earlier this month, the company planned to close around 500 stores.
  • The fabric and crafts chain experienced two rounds of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year.

Joann has reached the end of its thread.

The fabric and crafts chain said Sunday that it has reached a deal to sell its assets and wind down operations, including closing around 300 remaining stores.

"We deeply appreciate our dedicated Team Members, our customers and communities across the nation for their unwavering support for more than 80 years," the company said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the company planned to close around 500 stores as it navigated its second round of Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a year.

Eight in 10 Joann shoppers surveyed earlier this month by Numerator said they were upset about the news that some of the chain's stores were closing.

Numerator said that three-quarters of those said they were most likely to shop at Michael's or Hobby Lobby as an alternative, about half said they'd shop online, and nearly 40% said they'd go to large stores like Walmart or Target.

The news follows a rough start to the year for retailers, including Party City and Big Lots, which said they are closing 700 and 480 stores, respectively. A Business Insider tally finds more than 2,500 locations are set to close this year so far.

Gmail will stop using SMS for two-factor authentication

Google is planning to end support for SMS-based two-factor authentication in Gmail, Forbes reports. Sending a code to your personal phone via text message has long been an option Google offered to verify your identity, but it has unavoidable security issues the company wants to address.

The goal is to "reduce the impact of rampant, global SMS abuse," Gmail spokesperson Ross Richendrfer tells Forbes, and the solution, at least for now, is QR codes. Instead of entering your number and receiving a text with a code you need to enter, Google will throw up a QR code you need to scan with your phone. The reliance on your smartphone is still present, but now you don't have to rely on the lax security of SMS messages.

Using SMS two-factor authentication is better than nothing, but text messages aren't as secure as other methods. Criminals can intercept your message just by convincing your carrier to port your number to a new phone. By tricking a provider to send multiple SMS messages to a number a criminal operation controls in a process called "traffic pumping," they can even make money on each text, Google says. Considering the volume of SMS messages the company sends to both verify users and make sure people aren't bulk-creating accounts to send spam, it's not hard to see how SMS could be problem.

Ultimately, the goal for Google and other companies like it is to use passkeys and move away from passwords entirely, but adoption is slow, and making the current, much more familiar process secure is still meaningful.Β

Disney+ just dropped an explosive trailer for Andor season 2

24 February 2025 at 10:48

It’s been well over two years, but the wait is almost over. The second season of Andor hits Disney+ on April 22. The platform just dropped a juicy trailer to get all of us Star Wars fans pumped and ready.

The footage shows plenty of cool stuff, including the return of Rogue One’s chief antagonist Orson Crennic and the beloved droid K-2SO. The Death Star makes an appearance, which isn’t surprising given the ending of the first season. Mon Mothma also attends an extravagant β€œlet them eat cake” type of party.Β

There are a few bombastic explosions and several shots of the titular Cassian Andor walking down hallways. One thing this trailer doesn’t spoil is the plot. The footage is just a hodgepodge of cool moments, so we still have no idea what our favorite rebel spy will be getting up to in season two. To me, this is a good thing.

For the uninitiated, Andor is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and is set after the rise of the empire but before the events of the original Star Wars movie. It’s very good, with a tone that can only be described as β€œprestige Star Wars.” It stars Diego Luna, Stellan SkarsgΓ₯rd, Kyle Soller, Denise Gough and, sometimes, Forest Whitaker. Season two brings new actors into the fold, like Adria Arjona.

Disney+ is doing something unique with the release schedule here. Three episodes premiere on April 22, followed by another trio each week for a month. That adds up to 12 episodes. April is a big month for returning genre TV, as season two of The Last of Us premieres on April 13.
