Cameron Diaz says she spent her 10-year break from Hollywood 'trying to stay alive just like every other mother'

  • Cameron Diaz says she spent her 10-year break from acting "trying to stay alive just like every other mother."
  • But she's set to make a return to Hollywood in the Netflix movie "Back in Action."
  • Diaz joins a long list of celebrities — like Tom Brady — who have unretired.

Cameron Diaz was busy being a mother during her 10-year break from making movies.

In a video uploaded onto the "Still Watching Netflix" channel on YouTube, which goes behind the scenes on Netflix shows, Diaz spoke about what she had been up to during her hiatus.

"I was not keeping up with any kind of training," Diaz, 52, said. "I did nothing public."

The actor — known for films such as "Charlie's Angel" and "Vanilla Sky" — added that she "said no to everything," although she did start a wine company.

"That was what I was putting most of my focus on, if I was doing anything other than just sort of being a mom and living my day-to-day," Diaz said. "And that was pretty much it. I'm just trying to stay alive just like every other mother. I'm just trying to keep it going."

Diaz married Benji Madden of the rock band Good Charlotte in 2015. They welcomed their daughter, Raddix, in 2019 and their son, Cardinal, in 2024.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview in 2018, Diaz said she was "semi-retired" as an actor, before clarifying she was "actually retired." Per her IMDB page, her last role was in 2014's "Annie."

During Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit last year, Diaz shared that her decision to stop acting was something she "had to do."

"It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn't care about anything else. Nobody's opinion, nobody's success, no one's offer, no one's anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have," Diaz said. "It really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family."

Diaz is set to return to acting in the Netflix movie "Back in Action," which premieres January 17 and also stars Jamie Foxx.

She joins a long list of celebrities who have unretired — most notably, Tom Brady.

Six weeks after retiring from the NFL in 2022, Brady announced he was unretiring in a post on X.

"I'm coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa," Brady wrote. "Unfinished business. LFG."

More recently, in December, Jim Carrey, 62, walked back on his comments about coming out of retirement because he was strapped for cash.

"I said I'd like to retire, but I think I was talking more about power-resting. Because as soon as a good idea comes your way, or a group of people that you really enjoyed working with and stuff, it just — things tend to change," Carrey told Comicbook.com.

A representative for Diaz did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular hours.

Hundreds of Washington Post staffers urge Jeff Bezos in letter to meet with newsroom leaders

15 January 2025 at 20:26

Hundreds of staffers at The Washington Post sent a letter to the newspaper's owner, Jeff Bezos, on Wednesday urging him to meet with newsroom leaders amid a confidence crisis with the leadership.

Why it matters: It's the most drastic step staffers have taken to address the myriad challenges facing The Post over the past year.

Zoom in: The letter makes it clear that The Post staffers believe Bezos is aligned with their mission, despite his decision last year to spike a presidential endorsement for Vice President Harris. It argues too much trust has been lost with readers as a result of recent leadership decisions.

  • "We believe you take as much pride in the Washington Post as we do," it reads.
  • "We are deeply alarmed by recent leadership decisions that have led readers to question the integrity of this institution, broken with a tradition of transparency, and prompted some of our most distinguished colleagues to leave with more departures imminent."
  • "This goes far beyond the issue of the presidential endorsement, which we recognize as the owner's prerogative. This is about retaining our competitive edge, restoring trust that has been lost, and re-establishing a relationship with leadership based on open communication."
  • Signed by top newsroom leaders, the letter represented non-unionized staffers, as well as staffers within The Washington Post Guild.
  • A Washington Post spokesperson declined to comment.

Zoom out: Tension had already been building at The Post, but it started to boil over a few months into CEO Will Lewis' tenure last year.

  • Lewis announced sweeping plans to divide The Post's editorial side into three newsrooms, each with a different editor. The delivery of that strategy was met with skepticism.
  • There was an internal meltdown over an aborted plan to appoint Robert Winnett, the top editor of The Telegraph in London, as the editor of the main newsroom.
  • In recent weeks, a slew of top newsroom stars defected from The Post to rival publications. Last week, The Post informed staff that it would be cutting 4% of its staff, impacting fewer than 100 roles across business functions.

The bottom line: Once the most respected publication in the Beltway, the Washington Post now faces serious competition. Mounting anxiety from within threatens its reputation as ahead of a historic second term for President-elect Trump.

Scoop: GOP blowing deadline on talks to avoid government shutdown

15 January 2025 at 16:19

Top Senate negotiators are privately warning that talks about a government spending deal are way behind schedule.

Why it matters: Without significant progress, the GOP trifecta will need another spending stopgap or a much-despised omnibus spending package.

  • Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) — the top two Senate appropriators — told colleagues they're worried spending talks have taken a back seat to reconciliation planning, sources tell Axios.
  • Collins, for her part, has warned colleagues to not lose sight of the 2025 appropriations process, with the March deadline speeding nearer.
  • Talks between the House and Senate over a spending deal only recently began.

Zoom in: The current spending deal expires on March 14.

  • The GOP's worst-case scenario: A shutdown when Republicans control the whole government.

The bottom line: The House and Senate need to bridge a $30-plus billion gap in their spending wishes. They aren't close.

Kelly Osbourne Slams Celebs Using L.A. Fires for a 'Photo Op'

Kelly Osbourne is calling out the celebrities she thinks are using the Los Angeles wildfires for personal attention.

While Osbourne, 40, didn’t name names, she slammed the “disturbing” trend of stars continuing to post about how they are helping victims of the wildfires that have so far killed 25 people.

“’Is it just me being my normal overthinking, cynical self or is it really disturbing to see all of these celebrities using other people’s pain and suffering as a photo op to say, look, I’m helping, I’m doing this, I’m doing that?” she asked in a video posted via TikTok on Tuesday, January 14.

“I don’t believe you help because you get attention for helping, I believe you just help because you want to. I’m so confused, I think it’s so wrong,” she continued. “No one asked you to come out and give hugs, go home.”

Celebs Share How to Help Those Affected by LA Wildfires: Guide to Resources

Kelly’s comments come as celebrities around the world are donating their time and money to wildfire relief efforts. Many have done so publicly, sharing photos and videos of themselves volunteering.

Last week, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle visited a food bank where they met with victims and first responders, while handing out food to those affected by the fires.

“They really buoyed the spirits of the first responders,” Pasadena mayor Victor Gordo said, per the Daily Mail. “We visited the command post at the Rose Bowl and people were very happy to see them.”

OnMonday, January 13, Jay Leno served meals to firefighters in the Pacific Palisades area and visited the rescue crews stationed at the Rose Bowl.

“Pacific Palisades, it doesn’t exist and probably won’t exist for the next four, five years. I don’t know how you rebuild from this,” Leno told Anderson Cooper in an appearance on CNN on Monday. “But we’ll get through it. We always do.”

Celebrities Share Personal Photos of Heartbreaking Los Angeles Wildfires

AFD public information officer Erik Scott also praised Leno via X, writing, “Amid the #PalisadesFire, actor @jayleno stopped by to serve meals to #firefighters coming off the line. We’re grateful for his kindness & the support from our community during this challenging time.”

Actress Jessica Alba, meanwhile, spent Tuesday helping Baby2Baby, an organization she serves on the board of, by packing relief hygiene kits. She posted photos to her Instagram story and encouraged her followers to donate what they could.

A host of other celebrities, including Beyoncé, Paris Hilton, Jamie Lee Curtis and Eva Longoria have donated money to organizations supporting wildfire relief. As of Wednesday, January 15, the Palisades and Eaton fires have damaged or destroyed more than 12,300 structures, according to CNN. That includes the homes of many celebrities, including Hilton, Mel Gibson, Anna Faris and Billy Crystal.

Celebrity Realtors Condemn Price Gouging in Los Angeles Amid Wildfires

15 January 2025 at 14:03

As the Los Angeles wildfires continue to cause widespread devastation, many celebrity real estate agents are trying to find clients new places to live.

“I’ve been searching on the MLS [directory] trying to help displaced families from the fires find rental properties,” Selling Sunset star Jason Oppenheim said in an Instagram Story video in January 2025. “I’m noticing dozens of examples of people trying to do things like this, where they’re unable to get $9,500 or even $9,000 and then yesterday increase the rent over 30 percent to $12,000.”

The Oppenheim Group founder noted that while he “is all for free market capitalism,” he considers the rising costs to be the result of people “blatantly taking advantage” of the natural disaster.

California has an anti-price gouging law, meaning that it’s illegal to raise costs during an emergent situation.

DWTS' Jenna and Val Evacuate L.A. Fires Before Son Rome's 2nd Birthday

“The Legislature hereby finds that during a state of emergency or local emergency, including, but not limited to, an earthquake, flood, fire, riot, storm, drought, plant or animal infestation or disease, pandemic or epidemic disease outbreak, or other natural or manmade disaster, some merchants have taken unfair advantage of consumers by greatly increasing prices for essential consumer goods and services,” part of the Penal Code Section 396 reads. “While the pricing of consumer goods and services is generally best left to the marketplace under ordinary conditions, when a declared state of emergency or local emergency results in abnormal disruptions of the market, the public interest requires that excessive and unjustified increases in the prices of essential consumer goods and services be prohibited.”

The statute further reveals that any violation is a misdemeanor crime punishable by imprisonment in a county jail for less than one year, a fine less than $10,000 or a combination of the two punishments.

Despite the state’s legal ruling, many local realtors have still found that landlords are allegedly increasing the prices of their properties amid the wildfires. Keep scrolling to see what the stars have said:

“There are price gouging laws in California, they’re just being ignored right now, and this isn’t the time to be taking advantage of situations,” Oppenheim told the BBC in January 2025. “Everyone has tears in their eyes all day long, literally from the smoke but also just because it’s emotional to see people struggling like this.”

Oppenheim’s brokerage has also donated its services to help displaced clients find places to stay at no additional fee.

Taking to her Instagram Stories on January 10, 2025, Oppenheim’s colleague called the behavior “disgusting.”

“Other realtors that have a moral compass, let’s please report to the board,” she said.

In a follow-up post, Stause noted that she kept seeing examples of price gouging as she searched the MLS for properties on the market.

Josh Flagg

The Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles star spoke out about price gouging in a January 15, interview with Fox News.

“People [who] were not marketing their homes before are just now taking advantage because you can ask whatever you want for a house,” Flagg claimed. “You just can’t do it, then a natural disaster happens, and then you triple the price. That’s the problem.”

According to Flagg, there’s “not enough inventory” to house all of the individuals who have been displaced as a result of the fires.

“Right now, this is very scary. But at the end of the day, there will be a place for everyone to go. It’s just determining that now and everyone’s scrambling,” he told the outlet. “It’s like any disaster. In the beginning, it’s a nightmare and then everything just works itself out. But it’s not fun while you’re waiting.”

Josh Altman

Flagg’s former MDLLA costar told Fox News that the situation is “way worse than you could ever imagine.”

“There’s not a lot of inventory to begin with, and now all of a sudden you have a thousand-plus new people in the market, whether they’re buying or renting, depending on their financial situation and depending on their family situation,” Altman said. “It’s going to be years till this gets fixed up, the houses get finished. I mean, it’s going to be two years to build a house. It’s going to be a year to get permits.”

Ryan Murphy and Kim Kardashian are assembling an all-star cast for their upcoming show, All’s Fair.

Less than three months after making her American Horror Story debut on season 12 of Murphy’s iconic series in September 2023, it was announced that Kardashian would collaborate with the Emmy winner for a second time on a legal drama for Hulu.

The series is set to follow an all-female team of divorce lawyers in Los Angeles. In addition to starring in the show, Kardashian is also set to executive produce along with Murphy and her mother, Kris Jenner.

Sarah Paulson shared her excitement about working with Kardashian in an October 2024 interview with Yahoo Entertainment, stating, “I think it is absolutely time for people to take Kim Kardashian seriously as an actress. She was absolutely excellent in American Horror Story: Delicate.”

Paulson, one of Murphy’s frequent collaborators, added: “I think the show we’re about to do together is going to be a tremendous amount of fun and she’s going to be glorious on it. I have absolutely no doubt about that. Zero.”

While exact plot details about the show are being kept under wraps, Kardashian will star as a divorce lawyer who works in an all-female law firm in L.A.

Paulson revealed that she had read the show’s first two scripts during an October 2024 interview on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen. “It’s going to be incredibly sexy, it’s going to be really fun and there’s already a yummy text chain that’s happening with all of us girls that’s really fun,” she shared.

When Does ‘All’s Fair’ Premiere?

It is unknown when All’s Fair will premiere on Hulu. Deadline reported in December 2023 that the show is expected to start production in late 2024 and premiere in early 2025.

Who Has Joined the ‘All’s Fair’ Cast?

Variety reported in August 2024 that Glenn Close will play the head of the all-female law firm at the center of the show’s story. In addition to Kardashian and Paulson, the series will also star Naomi Watts, Niecy Nash, Teyana Taylor, Matthew Noszka and Ed O’Neill.

Halle Berry was attached to star in and executive produce the project in July 2024 but exited the series later that month.

In January 2025, TVLine reported that Brooke Shields would also be involved in the show in an undisclosed role.

Why Did Halle Berry Exit ‘All’s Fair’?

One week after her casting was announced, Variety reported that Berry parted ways with the project due to a scheduling conflict.

“You know, things happen for a reason,” she told Entertainment Tonight in August 2024. “[But] I would have loved to have been there with those ladies, and I know it’s gonna be great. … [It’s] Ryan Murphy! I mean, you know, duh. But next time!”

Rob Gronkowski Describes His Perfect Day With Girlfriend Camille Kostek

Since officially retiring from the NFL in June 2022, Rob Gronkowski is still figuring out what work-life balance looks like in a post-football world.

Gronkowski, 35, who now works as an analyst for Fox Sports after 11 seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, still keeps himself remarkably busy — which makes keeping his calendar up-to-date quite a tricky task.

“The part that I really have to tackle and take down is the travel,” said Gronkowski, who exclusively spoke to Us Weekly via his partnership with Bounty. “There’s a lot of traveling in my new era. I have an event in one city and then I have an event in another city. I gotta go out to L.A. and do [Fox NFL Kickoff] every Sunday. So you learn the tricks in order to tackle the travel so it doesn’t beat you down much.”

Gronkowski explained, “I’m very good at sleeping on planes. I try and make sure I get my rest whenever I can on the plane. It’s an advantage. It’s kind of like time-traveling. If you fall asleep and wake up in the next city you’re like, ‘Whoa, that’s amazing.’”

Rob Gronkowski and Camille Kostek's Relationship Timeline

Given his hectic work and travel schedule, Gronkowski noted it makes his free time even more special and sacred.

“I love my days off,” Gronkowski said. “I make sure that I have a couple days off — at least five to seven days a month — because I love to still be in a routine of working out and taking care of myself, as well.”

As for his ideal way to spend an off day, Gronkowski said it all boils down to simplicity.

“I get a workout in, I go for a run, I get to bring my dog for a walk, I get to hang out with my girlfriend, all that good stuff,” Gronkowski explained.

The former football star has been dating his girlfriend, model Camille Kostek, since 2015. Gronkowski and Kostek, 32, met when she was a member of the New England Patriots cheerleading squad and he slipped her his number at a charity event.

The couple share a French bulldog named Ralphie Gronkowski, who has his own Instagram account with more than 54,000 followers.

Gronkowski’s television duties are currently kicked into high gear with the NFL playoffs in full swing, which will include a trip to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX in February. While in the Big Easy, former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be Gronkowski’s tour guide as part of Bounty’s Wingman campaign.

Gronk Says Fans Shouldn't Be Concerned About Travis Kelce Going Hollywood

“I got the call from Gronk saying, ‘Hey, do you wanna be my wingman for the Super Bowl in New Orleans?’ I mean, the answer is obviously yes,” Brees, 46, exclusively told Us. “I can’t wait to show this guy around, show him a little Southern hospitality. He’s used to buffalo wings being a Buffalo, New York, guy. But we’re going to add some Cajun spice to those wings. He’s in for a treat.”

Gronkowski and Brees will be on the ground in New Orleans at Super Bowl LIX’s Radio Row in the lead-up to the game at New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, in addition to sampling the best the city has to offer.

“Who better to call than Mr. New Orleans himself?” Gronkowski said of Brees. “He’s the mayor of the entire city. We’re going to be out at restaurants, eating wings and causing messes.”

Wells Adams Jokes Sarah Hyland ‘Wasn’t Super Proud’ of His ‘Traitors’ Exit

Wells Adams thinks his wife, Sarah Hyland, was disappointed by his early exit on The Traitors.

“Yeah, she wasn’t super proud of me,” Adams, 40, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on Tuesday, January 14. “I mean, there’s vows that we said for better or worse, so she can’t divorce me over this. She was bummed, I think.”

Adams, who wed the Modern Family alum in 2022, explained that he asked for Hyland’s thoughts after she watched the show one morning.

“I’m like, ‘What did you think?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah, you don’t look that bad.’ I’m like, ‘It’s that bad, isn’t it?’” he said. “I think she thought that I would win. I thought that I would win, and then I didn’t. So here we are.”

Wells Adams Jokes About the End of 'Traitors' Season 3, Teases Gameplay

Adams was the first contestant to be banished during season 3 of The Traitors, which premiered on Thursday, January 9. After steering during the dragon boat mission, Adams was singled out by The Real Housewives of the Potomac’s Robyn Dixon for appearing “uncomfortable” after the traitors were chosen.

Before his exit, Adams said he interacted with Dixon “so much.” He explained, “That’s why it was so hurtful. There are times when you’re not filming because you’re in a car going somewhere or whatever, or there’s times when you’re just not filming and you’re chitchatting about life and stuff. She was one of those people that I was around all the time. And so when she called me out, I was actually hurt. I was like, ‘I know about your family, we’ve talked about your podcast. I know all this stuff, and you’re saying that I’m acting different.’”

While reflecting on being eliminated from the show, Adams said he has an idea about why people suspected him of being a traitor. (Host Alan Cumming chose Bob the Drag Queen, Danielle Reyes and Carolyn Wiger to be traitors. Rob “Boston Rob” Mariano joined the crew after they murdered The Real Housewives of New York City’s Dorinda Medley.)

“I’ve done over 150 episodes of reality TV — and when cameras aren’t rolling, I’m saving my energy,” Adams explained. “When I was on the radio, I wouldn’t be cracking jokes unless the mic was on and I was doing the show. So, I think that’s what people saw was, I would turn on when the cameras were on because I knew we were making this show. And then when I wasn’t [on camera], I would be like, ‘I’m going to chill and hang out.’”

Adams noted that his behavior was different from that of the Housewives. (Dixon, Medley, The Real Housewives of Dubai’s Chanel Ayan and The Real Housewives of New Jersey’s Dolores Catania were all cast on season 3.)

“With the Housewives, the one thing I noticed is that they are constantly like that. I remember being like, ‘It’s got to be exhausting to be you,’” he said. “You’re always yelling at people and going crazy. You got to chill out, man. Your blood pressure must be off the Richter scale. When they said, ‘I think that you’re acting different,’ it was just, ‘No, I’m not going to tell the joke that I think would be funny for TV when the cameras aren’t rolling.’”

The Traitors season 3 airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on Peacock.

Lindsay Arnold’s breast augmentation surgery was a success — and according to a post updating her fans, even her braids stayed in tack.

The Dancing With the Stars alum, 31, documented her pre-and-post-surgery journey via a TikTok posted on Wednesday, January 15.

“Post-surgery Lindsay is a sight to see,” she joked, adding two laughing emojis. “Everything went great thank you for all the well wishes.”

Arnold filmed herself driving to the hospital on Tuesday, January 14, telling the camera, “I can’t believe this is actually happening!”

Lindsey Arnold Is ‘Not Done Having Babies’ Despite Breast Augmentation

Once she was checked in, she documented her required urine sample, joking, “Hopefully I’m not pregnant.”

Arnold then told her fans a “fun fact” about her childhood and associated with breast augmentation. “When I was in high school there was a rumor that went around that I got a boob job and that my dad is the one who gave me my boob job,” she shared. “My dad is not a plastic surgeon.”

The professional dancer confessed she “wasn’t even mad at it,” but all these years later she still isn’t sure who started the rumor.

Prior to her surgery, Arnold made a TikTok with her surgeon where they both danced. She also showed off her pre-procedure braids and noted that her husband, Sam Cusick, would film some behind-the-scenes moments.

The camera picked up after her procedure, when Arnold was drowsy because of the pain medicine. “[Are] my braids still in?” she asked her husband when she woke up.

Cusick assured Arnold that her hair still looked good, and she started to doze off. “I’m not very funny, am I?” she asked before she fell asleep.

When Arnold got home that afternoon, she once again documented her recovery, revealing she was watching Parks and Recreation.

“My pain is OK I’m just super sleepy, dizzy and nauseous,” she explained in the TikTok. “I can feel a little bit of tightness [around my boobs]. I am just so nauseous still. Pain wise, truly, I’m not too miserable at all.”

On Wednesday, Arnold returned to Instagram to share another update after a night at home. “Feeling pretty dang good this morning!” she wrote via her Instagram Story. “Coming off of anesthesia was rough yesterday just super nauseous and dizzy but slept great and feeling good. Pain is minimal so far and I’m very grateful for that.”

Arnold later shared a video of her daughters, Sage, 4, and June, 20 months, lying in bed with her while explaining her surgery. “My girls have been so gentle with me they are the sweetest,” she captioned the clip.

Arnold announced her plans to get a breast augmentation and lift in December 2024, calling it her “Christmas present.”

She noted that after a birthday getaway to Mexico with her husband she was going to undergo surgery. “It’s something I’m very excited about,” Arnold said in a TikTok video at the time. “I know there’s mixed opinions on this type of thing, and so I get it. … If it’s not for you, it’s not for you.”

Arnold touched upon her choice in a separate TikTok video, revealing that she initially planned to have the procedure once she was “done having kids.”

Her timeline, however, has since shifted with Arnold telling her followers, “We are not done having babies” but the couple weren’t planning to expand their brood right away.

“I just decided I didn’t want to wait,” she added. “Obviously, [I] know there are chances I’d maybe need to get a lift later on in life or whatever, but I just don’t want to wait anymore. … We’re just putting [family planning] on pause a bit longer.”

The 2025 Critics Choice Awards will go on despite multiple postponements due to the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires.

The annual awards show was initially set to take place on January 12, but was pushed to January 26 after Santa Ana winds caused multiple fires to spread across the greater L.A. area. The fires destroyed businesses, schools and homes, forcing thousands to evacuate the region and claiming at least 25 lives.

Deadline later reported that the ceremony was postponed a second time until February, though an exact date has yet to be revealed.

Several celebrities were impacted by the fires, including Adam Brody, who scored a nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Netflix’s Nobody Wants This. The show earned a total of four nods, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Kristen Bell. (Brody, 45, and his wife, Leighton Meester, reportedly lost their home in the fires.)

Similar to the Oscars — which is based on votes from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science — the Critics Choice Awards are voted on by their own governing body, the Critics Choice Association (CCA). While the Golden Globes are also voted on by entertainment journalists, the CCA is specific to the Critics Choice Awards.

Michelle Randolph's Quotes About Her Controversial 'Landman' Character

Michelle Randolph is aware of how polarizing her Landman character, Ainsley, is.

Creator Taylor Sheridan‘s Paramount+ series premiered in November 2024 and introduced Billy Bob Thornton as a corporate fixer for an oil titan (Jon Hamm). The West Texas-set drama had life-and-death stakes but it was Thornton’s scenes with 27-year-old Randolph, who plays his 17-year-old daughter, that went viral. The most-talked about moments included her talking to her father about sex while walking around his house — which he shares with two men of similar age — in bikinis and her underwear.

“Some of the things that Ainsley has to say are shocking and there were moments where I thought, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to pull this off,'” Randolph admitted to The Hollywood Reporter one month later. “I want to find the most human version of this character that I can, and I work really hard at doing that.”

Randolph recalled putting in the work to bring Ainsley to life.

Actors Who Keep Appearing in Taylor Sheridan's Shows: 'Yellowstone' and More

“I worked with a dialect coach, a movement coach and an acting coach and I just studied like crazy. I had about a year almost to prep for her,” she explained about her approach to Ainsley. “It was incredibly helpful to kind of sit with that character. I worked really hard to find ways to justify her behavior and make a full human out of something that doesn’t always seem like what a 17-year-old would say, but people like that exist.”

While reflecting on her onscreen collaborations with Sheridan, Randolph said Landmanrequired 10 times more prep” than 1923.

“I wanted to be very careful about the way that Ainsley comes across. There’s only so much that I can control, but you also can control a lot as an actor,” she continued. “And just being around Ali [Larter] and Billy and Jacob [Lofland] and being in Texas really helped create this full person that Ainsley is. She has this free essence about her and she’s wild, and I loved every second of it.”

“It’s hard to not be aware of it,” Randolph told The Hollywood Reporter about the negative response to Ainsley’s seasons. “But I disassociate and the thing is, I got the script. I read it. I had my moments, my thoughts.”

Randolph reminded viewers that she had nothing to do with what was written on the page.

“My job ended when I finished my last day on set, and then I released it. The show went out,” she continued. “I can’t tell people how to interpret my character, but at least it’s sparking conversation. And I’m really proud of the show that we made.”

Give Ainsley a Chance

Randolph urged viewers to give Ainsley the space to evolve, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “She’s 17 and she’s growing. I think she gets it more than the audience gets to see. There are moments where you realize that she can be, not manipulative, but she knows how to play her dad, and also her mom. She knows how to get what she wants. She loves her family.”

She concluded: “She is figuring out who she is and meeting different peers and going to school. She’s not just the bratty young daughter; she is a person. We get to see 5 percent of who Ainsley is. Hopefully as the show goes on, we get to see all of who she is.”

Making It Work

The actress admitted it was a challenge properly representing Ainsley in the first few episodes.

“When you start a show, it’s so hard because you don’t know your full character. Knowing who she is in episode 10 was really hard when episode 1 was just coming out. I was like, that’s not all she has to do!” Randolph told Deadline in January 2025. “You don’t want to meet the fully evolved version of a character. If you don’t get to see the growth, then it’s not fun to watch. So I am thankful that we got to meet Ainsley at Point A, and hopefully by the time the show’s done, however many seasons, we’ll meet her at Z.”

Developing the Character

“When I first read [the scripts], I had to digest. And then, it just became like, that’s who she was. She never surprised me in a way, once I found her,” Randolph recalled during a People interview that same month. “It was interesting watching the audience reaction to it because I had sat with it for so long. It was like, ‘Oh, OK, we’re all going to process this again together.'”

Taking Pride in the Final Version

Randolph didn’t see the reason for the negativity pointed at her character.

“I think being comfortable in your sexuality is something to be celebrated. If that’s what you feel as a human [and] aligns with who you are, then be authentically yourself. And that’s what she’s doing,” Randolph told People. “Though she is 17, so I think as she gets older, she’ll put up more boundaries and understand the way the world works more. But as far as she’s concerned, right now, this is the way she’s been raised and she’s going to figure out if she thinks that’s right or wrong or she wants to change it.”

Randolph made it clear she had no regrets about working on Landman, saying, “I’m so proud of the show that we made, and so I just didn’t let myself have a perspective on what the audience thought. I think I’ve said before, [that] I disassociated [during certain scenes], but you kind of have to. I did my job when I was filming and then I closed the door and we put it out there, and I’m excited to hopefully continue the character and that’s all I can do.”

China has been stockpiling a key US crop before Trump takes office

  • China is loading up on soybeans amid US trade war fears.
  • China's soybean imports rose 6.5% in 2024, hedging against potential Trump trade policies.
  • Intensifying US-China trade tensions could hit the soybean trade, impacting US farmers and rural economies.

China is stockpiling more than semiconductor chips amid its trade war with the US.

Last year, China imported a record 105.03 million metric tons of soybeans — a key crop that was embroiled in Donald Trump's tariff war with China during his first presidency.

China's import of US soybeans, in particular, also spiked last year, rising 6.5% from 2023, according to Reuters' calculations of official customs data.

Buyers from China — the world's largest soybean consumers — were likely stocking up on the crop to hedge any geopolitical risks ahead of Trump's second term, analysts said.

Trump has threatened to put 60% tariffs on all Chinese goods during his second presidential term, igniting fears of an intensification in trade tensions.

"If the US ramps up tariffs on Chinese imports, China could target US agricultural imports as retaliatory tariff countermeasures," Rajiv Biswas, an international economist and the author of "Asian Megatrends," told Business Insider.

"US soybean imports are likely to be a key target for China's retaliatory tariff measures due to the very large scale of China's soybean imports from the US," he added.

The power of the soybean market

The US is the world's second-largest soybean producer after Brazil. It accounts for about a quarter of China's import of the oilseed, which it typically uses for animal feed.

During his first term as president, Trump slapped heavy tariffs on Chinese imports.

In response, China imposed 25% tariffs on US agricultural produce, including soybeans, sending American soybean exports to China sharply lower.

The tariffs on some of these farm imports were waived ahead of the US-China trade deal in January 2020.

Impact on American farmers

A replay of retaliatory tariffs during Trump's second presidency could hit US soybean farmers.

"In a scenario where China imposes retaliatory tariffs on US soybeans in 2025, the impact would again likely be a substantial economic loss for the US soybean industry," said Biswas.

A study from the American Soybean Association and the National Corn Growers Association shows that a new trade war would result in an "immediate drop in corn and soy exports to the tune of hundreds of millions of tons."

"Brazil and Argentina would claim the lost market share, which would be extremely difficult for American growers to reclaim in the future," the two associations said in October, cautioning against a trade war.

There isn't enough demand from the rest of the world to offset a major loss of soybean exports to China, they added.

A trade war would create a "ripple impact across the US, particularly in rural economies where farmers live, purchase inputs, use farm and personal services, and purchase household goods," wrote the two agriculture trade associations.

As it is, Chinese soybean importers have diversified their sources since Trump's first presidential term, with Brazil a major beneficiary of the trend.

Any decline in Chinese soybean demand — made worse by the country's ongoing economic downturn — would also weigh on the trade in a well-supplied market.

"Although a Trump presidency could reignite US-Mainland China trade tensions and potential Chinese tariffs on US soybean exports, we anticipate that the expected decline in Chinese demand will mitigate price impacts," BMI Research wrote last week.

Everything to know about LinkedIn, the popular professional networking and career development site owned by Microsoft

  • LinkedIn is a social network for professional networking and career development.
  • Microsoft acquired LinkedIn nearly a decade ago for a whopping $26.2 billion in cash.
  • LinkedIn is free, but a subscription version called LinkedIn Premium offers additional features.

Like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and a dozen others, LinkedIn is a social network. And like other social networks, it's owned by a big tech company: Microsoft.

But unlike most social networks, LinkedIn is a professional networking site, designed to help people make business connections, share their experiences and resumes, and find jobs.

Microsoft bought LinkedIn in 2016 for $26.2 billion in cash. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at the time that the social network would complement Microsoft's business-focused software, such as Microsoft Office 365, the suite of productivity programs.

Like many tech companies, LinkedIn has had its ups and downs in the post-pandemic years. LinkedIn Premium earned $1.7 billion from subscribers in 2023, executives revealed on a Microsoft earnings call. However, the job cuts that have plagued the tech industry didn't spare the networking site; LinkedIn laid off hundreds of employees in 2023 and 2024.

But despite financial turbulence at the company, LinkedIn is still a valuable networking site used by millions of people and companies all over the world. Here's what you need to know about using the platform:

LinkedIn essentials

Despite the professional focus, LinkedIn is quite similar to social networking sites like Facebook. It's based on principles like connecting to friends (or, in the case of LinkedIn, "connections,"), posting updates, sharing and liking content, and messaging other users.

LinkedIn also puts a professional spin on ideas you know from Facebook. Your profile, for example, becomes a resume, complete with work experience, accomplishments, recommendations, and referrals from colleagues.

The site also offers things you won't find in other places, like a full-featured career board, where you can search for and apply for jobs.

Many employment services are now compatible with LinkedIn — when applying for a position, you may be able to share your LinkedIn profile, which sometimes means you won't need to painstakingly enter your work experience into a long online form.

If you're new to LinkedIn, here's a quick tour around the site.

A quick tour of LinkedIn

  • Home is akin to Facebook's news feed. Here you can see posts made by other LinkedIn users, and make your own posts that others can see, like, share, and comment on. Like Facebook, you can limit your posts to just connections in your network, or share your thoughts with everyone.
  • My Network is where you can see your existing network of connections, and search for LinkedIn users to invite to join your network. You can also see existing invitations you've received from others.
  • Jobs is a comprehensive career site. You can search for and apply for jobs, get information about companies you're interested in, and much more. You can set up notifications and get emails when there are new job postings.
  • Messaging leads to an instant messaging platform you can use to chat with people in your network. You can also use it to send messages to people outside your network with something called InMail, if you subscribe to certain tiers of LinkedIn Premium.
  • Me is where you can find your profile, which is akin to your resume. Here, you can show your career history by posting your work experience, accomplishments, education, current location, and more. If you have a LinkedIn account, this should be as polished as your actual resume, as you can expect professional connections and recruiters to look at it.

What you can do with LinkedIn

It should be clear that LinkedIn is a tool you can use to enhance your professional networking and job searching activities.

Many people use the site to grow their contacts and find career opportunities, and the Jobs section of the site is a powerful tool for finding and applying for jobs. There are settings on LinkedIn that let you alert recruiters that you're actively job searching as well.

Some people use LinkedIn to enhance their professional reputation by making posts in the news feed, and commenting on other people's posts.

Like most other tech companies in recent years — including Microsoft and its new Copilot tool — LinkedIn has increasingly focused on AI products. LinkedIn has unveiled its own AI-powered writing assistant that can generate personalized suggestions for your profile.

LinkedIn Premium

LinkedIn Premium is a subscription version of LinkedIn that adds a number of additional features, such as online professional development classes, insights into who's viewing your profile, and the ability to instant message anyone on LinkedIn, even if they're not in your network.

LinkedIn Premium offers four types of plans with different price points, depending on your needs. Premium Career is for professionals and job-seekers looking to further their careers, while Premium Business, Sales Navigator, and Recruiter Lite are for employers, businesses, or sales professionals.

The most popular plan, LinkedIn Premium Career, costs $39.99 for one month, or you can purchase an annual package for $239.88. You can also try a one-month free trial.
