Heat suspend Jimmy Butler again after missing flight for road trip: report

22 January 2025 at 18:45

The Miami Heat’s rollercoaster saga with All-Star Jimmy Butler continues, as they are reportedly suspending him two games for missing a team flight for a road trip, per ESPN.

The Heat were heading to Milwaukee on Wednesday for their nationally televised game against the Bucks on Thursday night, but Butler was not on the flight.

ESPN adds that Butler intended on making his way to Milwaukee another way, but the Heat are expected to suspend him for the road trip, which includes a Saturday game against the Brooklyn Nets as well.

This is the second in-house suspension for Butler this season, which only adds to the turmoil that was highlighted by him requesting a trade a few weeks ago.

Butler also served a seven-game suspension for "multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team," though he remains a member of the Heat.

JIMMY BUTLER PLAYS IN SUNS-THEMED SNEAKERS HOURS AFTER PHOENIX ACQUIRES TRADE ASSETS

Butler continues to play, but he noted over the weekend that the "whole truth will come out" after making his trade request.

"Sooner or later, the whole truth will come out, but until then, we'll continue to let people talk. And if I'm here, I will get out there to play," Butler told the media after playing in the team’s loss to the Denver Nuggets at home.

Bulter also seemed to be frustrated with the reports that said his relationship with Miami players and the front office were tense.

"I expect for people to talk," Butler said. "Half the reason is because don't nobody ever know what I'm really doing, so you just make up stuff, which is fine. And, honestly, I really don't pay any attention to it. But I've got people telling me, ‘Oh they said this. They said that.' So, I guess it's really all good. I don't have to clear anything up.

"So more power to you. Keep talking, and we'll see where we end up."

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old sparked some social media controversy as he was spotted wearing Phoenix Suns-themed sneakers on Tuesday night, with many believing it was done purposefully as his desired trade destination.

It also came just hours after the Suns acquired three future first-round picks from the Utah Jazz in exchange for another first-round pick.

Phoenix could use another star, as the Kevin Durant-Devin Booker-led roster is only 21-21 this season.

Heat president Pat Riley said back in December, "We are not trading Jimmy Butler." However, the team’s stance changed after that seven-game suspension.

The Heat said they would "listen to offers" on Butler after announcing his suspension.

Department of Justice freezes all civil rights division cases: report

22 January 2025 at 18:41

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) sent a memo to its civil rights division, ordering a freeze to all ongoing litigation originating from the Biden administration and halting the pursuit of any new cases or settlements, according to reports.

The Washington Post first reported that a memo sent to Kathleen Wolfe, the temporary head of the division appointed by the Trump administration, instructed her to make sure attorneys do not file "any new complaints, motions to intervene, agree-upon remands, amicus briefs, or statements of interest."

As to how long the freeze will last, the memo does not say, though it practically ceases the division until President Donald Trump’s nomination to lead the department, Harmeet Dhillon, is confirmed by the Senate.

The publication also reported the freeze was "consistent with the Department’s goal of ensuring that the Federal Government speaks with one voice in its view of the law and to ensure that the President’s appointees or designees have the opportunity to decide whether to initiate any new cases."

DOJ RACING THE CLOCK TO ENSHRINE ‘WOKE’ POLICING RULES, LAWYER SAYS, AS JUDGE HEARS BREONNA TAYLOR REFORM CASE

A source familiar with the memo confirmed its contents to Fox News.

The DOJ had no comment on the matter.

Wolfe was also told in another memo that the division must tell the chief of staff of the DOJ about any consent decrees finalized by the division over the past 90 days.

WATCHDOG SEEKS HALT TO 11TH HOUR BIDEN DOJ EFFORT TO ‘HANDCUFF' KY POLICE OVER BREONNA TAYLOR INCIDENT

Earlier this month, a Kentucky judge declined to immediately sign a police reform consent decree forged by the DOJ and the city of Louisville during a hearing one courtroom participant described as a hasty attempt by the Biden administration to hamstring incoming President Trump.

But federal Judge Benjamin Beaton refused to be a "rubber stamp" for a 240-page reform plan prompted by the 2020 police-involved shooting of Breonna Taylor, according to Oversight Project counsel Kyle Brosnan.

Taylor was killed in a hail of police gunfire after Louisville officers sought to serve a drug warrant at her boyfriend Kenneth Walker’s house. Walker fired a "warning shot" through the door and struck Officer Jonathan Mattingly in the leg.

PROPOSED CHICAGO POLICE RESOURCE CUTS COULD LAND CITY IN COURT UNDER CONSENT DECREE, OFFICIALS WARN

A consent decree, Brosnan noted, is different from other legal agreements in that it cannot simply be reversed by presidential order or a change of heart by one of the parties involved.

The consent decree alleged a pattern or practice of racial bias in Louisville policing, including in traffic stops, sexual assault probes or use of force.

There are at least two other police reform consent decrees going through the legal process, one in Maryland and one in Minnesota.

On Jan. 6, the DOJ reached an agreement with Minneapolis, which still requires court approval, to reform the department’s "unconstitutional and unlawful practices" allegedly counter to the Americans With Disabilities Act and 14th Amendment.

In October 2024, the feds sued the Maryland Department of State Police alleging Civil Rights Act violations.

"The United States claims MDSP violated Title VII when it used a certain physical fitness test and a certain written test to hire entry-level Troopers because the tests disqualified more female and African-American applicants than others and were not job related," a court document states.

Maryland police dispute the allegations.

Watch Duty CEO says he doesn't need to take more of people's money

Watch Duty CEO John Mills
Watch Duty CEO John Mills said the app has seen 2.5 million downloads and 12 million active users in recent weeks.

  • Watch Duty became a critical app amid the Los Angeles wildfires which have burned 35,000+ acres.
  • The app saw 2.5 million downloads in the past two weeks, CEO John Mills told BI.
  • Mills said he has no interest in further monetizing on the platform.

One of the most critical apps in January was a real-time wildfire alert system powered by a nonprofit that has 15 employees and about 200 volunteers.

The app, Watch Duty, provides timely updates of the Palisades and Eaton wildfires, among others that burned — and continue to burn — in the Los Angeles region. Residents and first responders, including LA's Emergency Operations Center, relied on the app to receive up-to-date information on the fast-moving fires that have so far burned more than 35,000 acres and killed at least 27 people.

CEO and cofounder John Mills told Business Insider in an interview that the app received 2.5 million downloads and 12 million active users in the past two weeks. Watch Duty shot to the top of Apple's app stores in the first days of the fire.

Mills said that's no reason to start charging more for Watch Duty's services or try to further monetize from the app.

"We want to do this for the greater good, and the best way I found to do that is to use the nonprofit angle," Mills said.

Watch Duty, which was founded in 2021, has no brick-and-mortar HQ, and its staff all work remotely. Mills himself has a background in tech and co-founded an operations platform for chain restaurants.

The CEO said he was motivated to start the organization shortly after he moved to Sonoma County in 2020, the same year California saw a record-number wildfires. The Walbridge Fire in Sonoma alone burned more than 55,000 acres.

"The Walbridge Fire was the ultimate one that really got me to do something about this, and that was the one that ended about a quarter mile from the edge of my property," he said. "I evacuated for the first time and I spent seven nights just up all day, all night, trying to learn about what was going on, how to help, and what the problems were. It occurred to me that this was not going to get resolved any other way."

Part of the advantage Watch Duty has is that it's not restricted by boundaries or jurisdictions unlike government agencies, which could slow down the speed of updates and emergency notifications, Mills said.

"It's really challenging because one county might have more advanced systems and the other one doesn't, but the fire is tearing through multiple counties at a time, Mills said. "There's not one integrated system that really helps tie all this together and that's really where we shine."

By 2024, according to its annual report, Watch Duty grew its yearly active users to 7.2 million people. The app provides updates across 22 states.

For regular users, Watch Duty remains free. Some can pay $25 a year for extra features such as flight tracking data. The organization has even started to build and sell government services, "albeit very cheap," Mills said.

"People laugh. They say you should charge more. I'm like, that's not the point, man. This is my life. I live in the woods. We're going to make money, but the money is to support the free operation and pay our engineers and our reporters," he said.

As a nonprofit, Watch Duty can accept donations. Tech CEOs including Snap's Evan Spiegel and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg have donated, Mills said. Google's philanthropic arm, Google.org, has given $2 million, he added.

Mills said he intends to keep Watch Duty a nonprofit.

"We've been on phone calls with Amazon, Google, Apple — everyone is giving us resources to make sure this thing stays alive," he said. "And so, I don't need to sell out to keep the thing doing what it does."

Fast-moving fire north of LA closes part of I-5 and frays nerves in California after back-to-back blazes

  • The Hughes Fire erupted in southern California Wednesday, the latest in a string of wildfires.
  • Parts of the crucial Interstate 5 freeway were closed as crews battled the flames.
  • The fire spread rapidly and forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents.

Another fast-growing fire broke out in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties on Wednesday as the region is still reeling from the fires that burned through more than 37,000 acres earlier this month.

The Hughes Fire erupted at around 10:50 a.m. local time near Castaic, located north of Los Angeles city about 40 miles north of the Palisades Fire. It was first reported at about 50 acres and quickly grew to 9,457 acres by Wednesday evening, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire.

The cause of the fire, which was 0% contained as of Wednesday evening, was unknown.

Evacuation orders were issued for the surrounding areas. Officials said during a press conference that more than 31,000 people were under evacuation orders, while another 23,000 were under evacuation warnings.

The vital I-5 freeway was also temporarily closed as a result of the Hughes Fire, and some offramps in the area remained closed Wednesday evening.

Though some rain is expected in the area later in the week, winds continue to challenge the firefighting efforts in the dry, brushy area and threaten to push the flames into Ventura County, Daniel Swain, a UCLA climate scientist, said in a live stream, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"This is not a good place to have a fire under northeast winds, because there is an almost contiguous, very dense fuel bed all in this region," Swain said.

Earlier this month the Palisades and Eaton fires tore through the Pacific Palisades and Altadena, killing at least 27 people and destroying thousands of structures.

'W.A.G.s to Riches' Shows Feud Over Buying Suite at Kansas City Chiefs Game

W.A.G.s to Riches is set in Miami but somehow the Netflix series found a way to feature a feud over a Kansas City Chiefs game.

During the first season, which premiered on Wednesday, January 22, Keeta Hill was asked about the tension between her and Sadé Vanessa.

“We actually had an interaction when [my husband Tyreek Hill‘s team the Miami Dolphins] played Kansas City last season. I didn’t really know [Sadé] but all the wives and girlfriends had a suite together,” she recalled. “We all pitched in and I was filming for Netflix’s Hard Knocks [docuseries] at the time.”

Keeta asked to shoot scenes “in the suite” because it “was zero degrees outside” when the two teams faced off in the Chiefs’ first playoff game of the season.

“All the girls said Sadé was the one saying I couldn’t do it,” Keeta claimed about entering the suite at the game, which took place in January 2024. “I never met her before and I didn’t know who she was. We all pitched in.”

Keeta thought the lack of footage had something to do with it. “I think some of the girls thought, ‘We aren’t getting shot so you all can’t come in,'” she noted.

Elsewhere in the show, Sadé denied the accusation.

“I took it upon myself to arrange and coordinate a suite because we are going to Kansas and it is negative seven degrees,” she explained from her perspective. “In that group chat, she was not present. We made plans and everyone sent in money. She had someone speaking for her behalf in the group chat. She sent money.”

Sadé continued: “Me along with several other girls were not comfortable with them. If Hard Knocks wants to put us in a suite then they need to provide it. They didn’t come up to the suite until after halftime because they were filming and I was nothing but nice.”

The duo ultimately hashed things out after a group lunch. “I didn’t choose not to allow you guys to shoot. I wasn’t the main girl [in charge of that decision],” Sadé told Keeta. “It wasn’t even a thought. I am not disagreeing with that.”

Sadé and Keeta admitted there were issues “still lingering” that they wanted to bring to an end. More specifically, they noted that “communication was just not there” when the confusion originally began but they wanted to start fresh.

George Gray is best known for declaring, “Come on down,” on The Price Is Right but there’s more to the announcer than meets the eye.

Gray was born in the suburbs of St. Louis, and later relocated to Tucson, Arizona, for high school and college. After graduating from the University of Arizona, he worked as a sketch and stand-up comedian. Gray also dabbled in acting before turning to hosting.

After Rich Fields revealed in 2010 that he was not returning as The Price Is Right’s announcer, Gray and several others were selected to be rotating announcers for the game show. The following year, Gray officially got the gig.

“I never thought that I’d be [announcing The Price Is Right]. I mean it’s crazy,” Gray reflected in a December 2020 interview for Hosts at Home. “When I was up for the job, I just thought, ‘Well the thing to do is do what I do.’”

Before becoming The Price Is Right’s beloved announcer, Gray hosted several other game shows. His first hosting gig was for the Fox Movie Channel’s series FXM Friday Nights. Gray then went on to cohost Movies For Guys Who Like Movies on TBS.

In 2001, Gray joined the series Junkyard Wars as the host for season 1, where he earned his first Emmy nomination. Gray also hosted Extreme Gong, The Weakest Link, National Lampoon’s Greek Games, $25 Million Dollar Hoax, I’d Do Anything and What’s With That House.

Gray Had His Own Viral ‘Price Is Right’ Moment

During a January 2015 episode of The Price Is Right, Gray was describing a treadmill while on the equipment. He decided to jog backwards so the camera could see him and Gray ultimately fell while trying to get off. Despite taking a tumble, Gray decided the show must go on and continued announcing from the floor.

“Aspirin not included,” he quipped in the clip which ultimately went viral.

In April 2020, Gray was rushed to the hospital for chest pains. He suffered from a heart attack and had a stent put in. The stent failed and Gray had a second heart attack. He then received an additional stent. While in the hospital, Gray suffered a third heart attack. Instead of having a third stent put in, Gray underwent a quadruple bypass. Gray returned to work five months later.

According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly, Gray listed the pair’s date of separation as August 1, 2024. He cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their split.

The announcer later told TMZ that his and Green’s separation was amicable and that the pair were in counseling to work on their marriage.

Nearly six months after the death of her father, country music star Lauren Alaina is sharing big news.

On Wednesday, January 22, Alaina revealed she is expecting her first child with her husband Cam Arnold, whom she married in February 2024.

In a statement shared with People, Alaina confirmed the news of her pregnancy after hinting about it in her latest music video, “Those Kind of Women,” where she accentuated her growing baby bump.

“It’s all about the women who raised me,” she said of the song. “I was really fortunate to be raised around a bunch of very strong women. And when we cut this song, when we recorded this song, I was not pregnant nor thinking about becoming pregnant,” Alaina told People.

“It’s funny how things fell into place. It literally changed the song for me. I already loved it, because it’s about the women who raised me. But, now I am going to be a woman raising a child.”

'American Idol' Alum Lauren Alaina Marries Fiance in ‘Big, Loud’ Wedding

Alaina hasn’t yet shared publicly if she is expecting a son or a daughter.

“[I didn’t know] I can love something that I haven’t even really held yet. I feel the baby inside me, and it’s kicking me and doing all of the things. It’s like I was the Grinch or something, and my heart grew,” she told People.

Alaina said learning she was pregnant “bonded” her and her husband “even more” than their marriage did, People reports.

“My love for him grew that day of getting married, and then finding out we were having a baby together. Walking through this experience with him has been unbelievable.”

”I’m looking forward to watching my husband be a dad,” Alaina continued. “He is so obsessed with our animals; he’s a big nurturer in general. In fact, when I was getting ready to marry him, that was something that I knew would be one of the best things about being his wife, was being able to parent with him.”

Alaina admitted that they weren’t trying to get pregnant yet, hoping to start that process in 2025.

Lauren Alaina Thanks Jason Aldean for His Support After Her Father’s Death

“Now I’m scared because I don’t feel like I passed any sort of test,” she shared. “They don’t make you take a test on being a mom. It’s crazy. People are like, ‘What’s your plan with the birth? And what’s your plan here?’ And I’m like, listen, ‘God’s plan. It wasn’t my plan.’”

She also believes her late father had a hand in everything that transpired in the months following his death.

“I do think that my dad passed away and got a stair up in heaven and was like, ‘Hey, we got to work something out down there to send the family something good.’ And it has been such an unexpected blessing.”

“We obviously still talk about and are dealing with the grief of my dad, but this baby has healed a lot of that for us … like it’s a little piece of my dad that will live on.”

Heath Ledger’s Best Onscreen Moments: ’10 Things I Hate About You,’ More

22 January 2025 at 12:16

Heath Ledger made an impact from the moment he first stepped in front of the camera — and his legacy continues to live on long after his death.

The Australian actor landed 23 roles during his 19-year career, making it nearly impossible not to see his face on the big screen year after year.

Sadly, Ledger’s life was cut short when he died at the age of 28 in 2008 due to an accidental overdose. Still, his legacy continues in his films — and through his and ex Michelle Williams’ daughter, Matilda, whom they welcomed in 2005.

Looking Back at Heath Ledger's Legacy on the 17th Anniversary of His Death

In his memory, Us Weekly is recounting the performances that made him a legend. Relive his most iconic onscreen moments above and read on for more details about his biggest movie hits.

’10 Things I Hate About You’ (1999)

This was the film that put Ledger on the map and gave the world their first look at that gorgeous smile that lit up the screen. One of his most memorable scenes in his career was in this film — his character, Patrick, sang “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” on the bleachers of the high school stadium to win over Julia Stiles‘ Kat.

‘A Knight’s Tale’ (2001)

Ledger was excited to land a more serious role after the rom-com. This movie was when he realized he had become a movie star. “I am affected by all this, you’d be a freak if you weren’t,” he said in an interview with NitrateOnline in 2001 while promoting the film. “I don’t care about it enough to let it affect me, it’s not the be-all and end-all of my life. I truly work to live. I love what I do, but the special moments for me are between ‘action’ and ‘cut,’ and the rest really bores me.”

‘Brokeback Mountain’ (2005)

The love story of two cowboys earned Ledger his first Academy Award nomination. He didn’t win, but earned great praise for his role of Ennis Del Mar. “Heath is very meticulous,” director Ang Lee told The Guardian in 2006. “I don’t advise actors to come to the monitor to watch themselves, but he’s the only exception I made. He gets better as he gets more self-conscious. He sets himself in a zone and believes in it and keeps refining it.”

‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)

Probably Ledger’s most memorable role is one of his last where he portrayed a very dark joker. The actor earned a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the film. While many thought the intense role drove him to his death, Ledger’s family confirmed that wasn’t the case at all.

“He had an amazing sense of humor and certainly playing the Joker, for him it was one big gag. He had so much fun doing that,” his sister Kate Ledger said after the Tribeca Film Festival premiere for I Am Heath Ledger, a documentary made about the actor, in 2017. “It was actually the exact opposite. There was no doom and gloom … That was a shock to me that people even thought that, really.”
