There was a straight shot from Earth to the Moon and Mars last night
I almost missed it. Amid a bout of prime-time doomscrolling, a social media post reminded me there was something worth seeing in the sky. Mars disappeared behind the full Moon for a little more than an hour Monday night, an event visible across most of North America and parts of Africa.
So I grabbed my camera, ran outside, and looked up just as Mars was supposed to emerge from the Moon's curved horizon. Seen with the naked eye, the Moon's brightness far outshined Mars, casting soft shadows on a cold winter evening in East Texas.
Viewing the Moon through binoculars, the red planet appeared just above several large partially shadowed craters at the edge of the Moon's curved limb. I quickly snapped dozens of photos with my handheld Canon 80D fitted with a 600 mm lens. Within a few minutes, Mars rose farther above the Moon's horizon. Thanks to the parallax effect, the Moon's relative motion in its orbit around Earth appears significantly faster than the movement of Mars in its orbit around the Sun.

Brooke Shields Uses This Serum On Her Signature Brows — And It’s on Amazon!
Brooke Shields is a Hollywood icon for many reasons, but her thick eyebrows are definitely her signature trait. A few months back, the model and actress, 59, shared her 10-minute beauty routine with Allure, and as a group that’s always on the go, we were more than curious to hear about the products she uses. Unsurprisingly, Shields’ biggest beauty hacks include items from her own haircare line, Commence, which is formulated for women over 40, and she relies on highlighter and minimal makeup to create a fresh, sultry everyday look. However, we were surprised to discover that the Suddenly Susan star also uses the viral GrandeBROW eyebrow booster serum as part of her daily routine.
Brooke Shields Said This Serum Helped 'Grow Back' Her Eyelashes
After pointing out that you’re supposed to use the brow-enhancing serum at night, Shields said that she likes to “brush up my brows a little bit without having to do much with a pencil.” She added that she uses the serum to help position her brows and that “it helps them grow” — which is the kind of multitasking we can all get behind for our own speedy get-ready routines!
Shop the GrandeBROW Brow Enhancing Serum for $38 at Amazon!
While Shields could have easily gatekept the fact that she uses this product to achieve her enviably thick brows, she is hardly alone in loving the follicle-boosting serum. Made by the same brand responsible for the cult-favorite GrandeLASH-MD Lash Enhancing Serum (which has 50,000+ reviews), the GrandeBROW Serum is packed with ingredients to help make the most of your brows. Whether you’ve overplucked or are experiencing age-related brow loss, the mix of Hyaluronic and amino acids condition hairs while the serum works to support growth. Although it takes up to four months to see the full benefits, improvements are visible within weeks.
You don’t have to just take our word for it, either — the before-and-after photos are seriously impressive!
Brooke Shields Is Obsessed with This Creamy Lip Liner
One shopper raves, “I can’t believe that at 63 years old I am getting my eyebrows back! After years of overplucking in the ’80s, my eyebrows were nonexistent. I heard about this product on a podcast. Be patient — it does take about a few months to get results. But hey, after 45 years with skimpy eyebrows, it’s worth the wait!”
“I’m 53, menopause in full swing, losing my brows more and more every month,” said another 5-star reviewer, who submitted before-and-after photos. “I used Anastasia brow serum for a year. It barely did a thing, so I stopped about eight or nine months ago. This is one tube worth of growth. They aren’t great — but to me, they feel like throw-back Brooke Shields eyebrows! The photos don’t really do them justice.”
If your brows have seen fuller days, shop Shields’ pick to reclaim them! There’s nothing to lose but sparse brows!

'Traitors' Host Alan Cumming Nearly Broke Up a Fight During 'Brutal' Season
The Traitors raised the stakes in season 3 with a physical argument that nearly broke out during a banishment roundtable.
“Everything has been upped a bit and the contestants bring their energy and their backstories. So that makes it a whole new thing as well. I love the fact of how each season is so different to the one before, even though, structurally, it has a similarity,” host Alan Cumming told Newsweek on Thursday, January 9. “The ending to this one is not like anything we’ve seen in the previous two seasons.”
Cumming, 59, didn’t expect for things to come to such a head, adding, “There’s bits in it that are so intense and brutal. I actually thought I was going to have to break up a fight at round table one time. It was really terrifying. I don’t break up many fights.”
While reflecting on the newest season, Cumming recalled plans behind the scenes to elevate the show following its overwhelming popularity.
All Rules and Behind-the-Scenes Secrets You Didn’t Know About ‘The Traitors’
“Partly because the second season was so successful, there was a pressure to not just repeat ourselves, it actually upped the ante. When you do a show like this, the first season nobody knows what’s going to happen. It’s virgin territory,” he continued. “Then, of course, people watch it. So it’s a question of pulling the rug from under them and keeping it fresh and having these twists and surprises. Even with my costumes and everything, we upped the ante on that. I just think it was a combination of all these things.”
Cumming teased that season 3 “hit its stride” in a way that the audience isn’t expecting. “It is bigger. I’m sort of a cult leader. I have my followers. I didn’t have followers in the other seasons,” he quipped. “So now I’ve gone from just like a dandy, lord of the manor in his castle, to official cult leader. I’m fine with it.”
Inspired by Dutch series De Verraders (which previously led to a popular UK version) , The Traitors brings together celebs, especially reality TV stars from different franchises — including Survivor, Big Brother, Real Housewives and more — as they compete in a mafia-style game for up to $250,000.
Season 3 features Wells Adams, Gabby Windey, Ciara Miller, Chrishell Stause, Jeremy Collins, Carolyn Wiger, Tony Vlachos, Bob the Drag Queen, Britney Haynes and Danielle Reyes. Bob Harper, Dylan Efron, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, Sam Asghari and Nikki Bella made up the rest of the group with later additions Rob “Boston Rob” Mariano, Wes Bergmann and Derrick Levasseur.
Reality Show Prize Money: Ranking ‘Survivor,’ ‘The Challenge’ and More
A new cast also meant a new version of Cumming.
“It’s sort of about the language that he uses. It’s very flooded and kind of arcane. Instead of saying, ‘Hey everybody, quiet down,’ like I would say, he would say ‘Players, there must only be one voice we hear at the round table,'” Cumming added about his evolving approach. “It’s about this kind of language and authority that he has, I think that is the secret to it. It’s amazing, when you are playing a character, it’s sort of like doing drag. When you’re doing drag, you have an alter ego, and so I’m kind of doing Traitors drag, and I have this character, and obviously it is quite draggy with all my swishing cloaks and everything.”
He continued: “But also, it gives me the freedom to be this other person, to be much more heightened and aggressive. And I obviously play lots of big characters. In real life, I’m not shy, but I definitely don’t walk in and go, ‘Hello everybody. I’m here!'”
After season 1 (which featured a mix of celebrity as well as non-celebrity contestants) debuted in 2023, creator Marc Pos explained the guidelines Cumming has to follow.
How Much Reality Stars Get Paid for 'Vanderpump Rules' and More
“The host is not there very much, and has to be careful not to manipulate the game, influence viewers, or spark doubts within the minds of contestants who are in their bubble,” Pos told Variety at the time. “But when they’re there, they have to be kind of a friendly yet intimidating figure.”
New episodes of The Traitors are released Thursdays on Peacock at 9 p.m. ET.
