Josh Allen scores 2 touchdowns, Bills force 3 turnovers in divisional round win over Ravens

19 January 2025 at 18:56

NFL fans usually use the phrase "frozen tundra" to describe the conditions at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. But on Sunday night, it could have been used to describe the field at Highmark Stadium for the playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens.

Temperatures in Orchard Park, New York, fell to around 16 degrees as light snow fell onto the field. It made the ball slippery and tougher to catch as well as made the tackles hurt just a little bit more.

The Bills held the lead in the fourth quarter with two Tyler Bass field goals and won the game, 27-25.

It was the Ravens who felt the brunt of the conditions late in the game.

Lamar Jackson found tight end Mark Andrews for a 16-yard completion with 8:50 left in the game. But Bills linebacker Terrel Bernard punched the ball out of Andrews’ hands and Buffalo recovered the fumble. It was one of three turnovers Baltimore committed.

It was far from over.

Jackson and the Ravens could still tie the game up. He led the team on an eight-play, 88-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isiah Likely. The Ravens were down two points.

SAQUON BARKLEY CARVES UP RAMS DEFENSE IN SNOW, EAGLES MOVE TO NFC TITLE GAME

Baltimore got set for the 2-point conversion attempt. Jackson broke out to his right and had Andrews open. The ball went into the veteran tight end’s hands, but he could not come up with the catch. The Bills breathed a sigh of relief and closed the game out.

Josh Allen finished with two rushing touchdowns in the game. He was 16-of-22 passing with 127 yards.

For the Ravens, their magical season came to an end.

Jackson was 18-of-25 with 254 passing yards, two touchdown passes and an interception. The Bills’ defense held Derrick Henry to 84 rushing yards. It was the fewest yards he had since Dec. 15 against the New York Giants.

The Bills next meet the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship with a trip to Super Bowl LIX on the line. Buffalo beat Kansas City on Nov. 17, 30-21.

Buffalo hasn’t made a Super Bowl since the 1993 season. They have never won a Super Bowl. It will be their first conference championship game since the 2020 season. They lost to the Chiefs in that game.

Jeff Torborg, World Series champ and former MLB manager, dead at 83

19 January 2025 at 16:54

Jeff Torborg, a World Series champion catcher who played 10 seasons in the majors and became a manager for 11 more years, has died, the Chicago White Sox announced Sunday. He was 83.

Torborg, a New Jersey native, played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels during his playing career, which lasted from 1964 to 1973. He managed the White Sox, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Montreal Expos and Florida Marlins.

He was on the Dodgers’ World Series-winning team in 1965. He was also the Marlins’ manager to open the 2003 season before he was fired and replaced with Jack McKeon. The Marlins defeated the New York Yankees in six games to win the World Series.

"Former MLB catcher and Chicago White Sox manager Jeff Torborg passed away this morning in Westfield, N.J. He was 83 years old," the team said in a post on X.

"Torborg was named the 1990 A.L. Manager of the Year after guiding the Sox to a 94-68 record that season, a 25-game improvement from the previous year."

Torborg batted .214 with 101 RBI and 297 hits in 1,525 plate appearances in his 10-year playing career. He got his start as manager with the Indians four years after he retired. He was only the manager for one full season and two half-seasons before he was fired.

He guided the White Sox to a 94-68 record in 1990 behind Carlton Fisk, Greg Hubbard and Bobby Thigpen, but the team didn’t make the postseason. He took the Mets job in 1992 and didn’t have the same success.

He served as an interim manager for the Expos in 2001 and was the Marlins’ full-time manager in 2002 before he was let go in the middle of the 2003 season.

Torborg was a broadcaster in between managerial stints. He was 634-718 as a manager.

Auburn's Bruce Pearl slams Hamas terrorists after 3 Israeli hostages are released

19 January 2025 at 16:49

Auburn Tigers men’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl sent a fiery message on social media on Sunday in response to a video that apparently showed Hamas terrorists handing over three Israeli hostages to the Red Cross.

The video showed the hostages moving from one vehicle to the next in between a large crowd of Hamas militants holding guns and chanting "Allah Akbar." The gunmen then stood on top of the vehicle.

Pearl didn’t appear pleased.

"This is what giving Palestinians Autonomy looks like. Does it look like they want peace?" he wrote on X. "They made war, murdered and raped, built tunnels and hid under their people, launched rockets from living rooms, then screamed genocide. RELEASE HOSTAGES NOW, then live in peace or leave town."

Pearl is not one to shy away from his support for Israel. He has been among the most outspoken sports figures about the issue.

Israel’s Cabinet approved a deal early Saturday morning for a cease-fire in Gaza that would include the release of dozens of hostages and pause the war with Hamas that began after the terror group's Oct. 7, 2023, attack on the Jewish state.

BITTERSWEET REJOICING AS FIRST HOSTAGES RETURN TO ISRAEL AFTER 471 DAYS IN CAPTIVITY

The deal would allow 33 hostages to be set free over the next six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. The remaining hostages are set to be released in a second phase that will be negotiated during the first.

Hamas agreed to release three female hostages on the first day of the deal, four on the seventh day and the remaining 26 over the next five weeks.

Hamas has said it will not release the remaining hostages without a lasting cease-fire and a full Israeli withdrawal.

The 15-month war in Gaza started when Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, in which roughly 1,200 people were killed and about 250 others were abducted, prompting military retaliation from Israeli forces. Nearly 100 hostages remain captive in Gaza.

Trump 'embodies what being an American is all about,' UFC's Dana White says

19 January 2025 at 16:31

UFC President Dana White spoke glowingly about President-elect Trump on Sunday night in Washington with his inauguration only hours away.

White talked to supporters at the Capital One Arena – home of the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals and Georgetown Hoyas – about Trump winning the election through every bit of adversity a presidential candidate could possibly face.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"The people have spoke loud and clear. America wants President Trump back in the White House. Think about this: Winning this election after everything that has happened over the last few years is an amazing achievement and an incredible comeback story," he said.

"Think of all the things President Trump had to go through to get back here. All the powerful forces that tried to take him down: the mainstream media, partisan prosecutors, assassins. It’s absolutely insane what this man has been through. And only President Trump could have fought through all those obstacles, all the attacks and still come out the winner.

In the end, what it comes down to is that Trump is a "winner," White said.

UFC STAR COLBY COVINGTON SAID HE LOST FIGHT BECAUSE HE WAS 'CAMPAIGNING FOR TRUMP'

"But, you know what? That’s just what he is. This guy is a winner. And I say this all the time. He’s the toughest, most resilient person that I’ve ever met and nothing was going to stop him from fighting so hard for the country he loves.

"He embodies what being an American is all about. We are the most toughest, resilient people on Earth and nothing can stop us when we unite."

White and Trump have deepened their relationship over the years. Trump was one of White’s biggest supporters in the early years of UFC. In turn, White has supported Trump’s presidential election bids.

This time around, White spoke at the Republican National Convention and the rally that took place at Madison Square Garden days before the election.

Saquon Barkley carves up Rams defense in snow, Eagles move to NFC title game

19 January 2025 at 15:46

Saquon Barkley was called upon to deliver in a big spot.

The Philadelphia Eagles running back lined up next to quarterback Jalen Hurts in the shotgun formation with less than five minutes to play in the divisional round playoff game on Sunday. Hurts looked over at Barkley, barely seeing through the snowstorm that plagued Lincoln Financial Field. The superstar athlete looked back at his quarterback and said, "I got this."

Barkley took the handoff and ran like he was shot out of a cannon. He hit the hole, avoided a tackle and ran for a 78-yard touchdown. He knew he would score from about 30 yards out.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

The Eagles’ faithful cheered as they watched their team hang on against the Los Angeles Rams for the remainder of the game and win, 28-22.

Barkley, who was going to be the driving force of the offense with the weather taking a turn for the worse, ran for a record 205 yards on 26 carries. He had two touchdowns in the game, including a 62-yard score in the first quarter.

"The elements were great, but the atmosphere was even better," Barkley told NBC after the game. "Our fans are amazing. It was a close one, but that’s playoff football, and at the end of the day, we got the job done."

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford gave Los Angeles everything it had in the final minutes. A 10-play, 70-yard drive after Barkley scored in the fourth quarter led to a touchdown pass to Coby Parkinson. It brought the game to within one score.

The Rams got a stop and were able to get the ball back for one final drive. Stafford got Los Angeles down the field thanks to an incredible catch from Puka Nacua.

TOM BRADY RECEIVES PRAISE FOR OBSERVATION AT CRUCIAL POINT OF LIONS-COMMANDERS PLAYOFF GAME

But the Eagles’ defense held strong and forced an incompletion on fourth down to force a turnover and solidify the game.

Philadelphia’s defense came up big. Aside from the stop on the final Rams drive, they forced two fumbles that led to Eagles field goals. Six points proved to be the difference in the game.

Hurts was 15-of-20 with 128 passing yards and 70 rushing yards. He had a 44-yard rushing touchdown to start the game but got banged up in the second quarter that stymied his ability to run for the rest of the game.

Stafford was 26-of-44 with 324 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He was sacked five times, including on the final drive that put more pressure on them to get the first down.

Philadelphia moves to the NFC Championship Game to face the Washington Commanders next Sunday.

Brittany Mahomes stuns fans with Chiefs playoff game appearance days after giving birth

19 January 2025 at 14:01

Brittany Mahomes may have shied away from the broadcast camera as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Houston Texans on Saturday night, but she was at Arrowhead Stadium for the game.

Mahomes stunned NFL fans with her appearance at the AFC playoff game. Just a few days before, she gave birth to her and Patrick’s third child, Golden Raye.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Fans who saw Mahomes on the sideline to support her husband showered her with praise for showing up. She and Patrick announced the birth of their child on Monday.

Brittany Mahomes was pregnant throughout the 2024 NFL season and still managed to show up at most of the Chiefs’ home games at Arrowhead Stadium to support the quarterback and the team.

Patrick seemed to be worried about the timing of the birth. She was set to have the child the week in which the Chiefs could have had a playoff game. Patrick may have been in line to miss the birth if Kansas City didn’t win the games it needed to have homefield advantage and a first-round bye in the postseason.

Luckily, the Chiefs wrapped that up against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day.

Patrick talked about their latest child on Wednesday.

"I’m good with three for right now," he told reporters on Tuesday. "We’ll see down the line maybe, but my goal was always three, so we’ve had three, and we’ll stick there for a while and see if we need to come back and get another one later on."

The family has two children already – Bronze and Sterling. Mahomes talked about how Brittany was doing after the birth of their newborn and how the other siblings are handling it.

"It’s been cool. I mean, I’m just supporting. Brittany crushed it," he said. "It’s been cool to welcome another baby girl in our family and see how my other kids react to her and having baby sissy and stuff like that. It’s been a lot of fun, and it was cool that football was on TV when I was in the hospital, so I got to watch a little bit. Brittany was kind enough to let us watch football as she was getting ready to give birth to our second daughter."

The Chiefs will be at home for an AFC Championship Game either against the Buffalo Bills or Baltimore Ravens.

Eagles' Saquon Barkley blows past Rams' Jared Verse for TD after rookie's comments about Philly fans

19 January 2025 at 13:12

Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley blew past Los Angeles Rams linebacker Jared Verse on his way to a 62-yard touchdown run in the first quarter of their playoff game.

The touchdown appeared to be extra sweet as Verse couldn’t chase down Barkley. The Pro Bowl rookie took a shot at Eagles fans before the game.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"I hate Eagles fans. They’re so annoying," he said earlier in the week. "When I see that green and white, I hate it. I actually get upset. Like, I actually get genuinely hot."

Barkley questioned the timing of Verse’s remarks.

"Probably not the smartest thing to say when you're coming to Philadelphia," he said, via ESPN. "I've been on the other side [as a member of the New York Giants] and even if I felt some type of way, I probably wouldn't give them any extra fuel. I'm pretty sure Philly fans have seen that comment. It was already going to be loud and rocking, so it's just only going to add to it."

Verse was treated to some taunting from fans at Lincoln Financial Field as the Rams warmed up for the divisional round game. His remarks were even shown on the video board of Lincoln Financial Field as the game got started.

Barkley’s touchdown put Philadelphia up 13-7 with 1:07 left in the first quarter.

The run came after quarterback Jalen Hurts galloped for a 44-yard touchdown run to start the game.

Novak Djokovic refuses interview with Australian broadcaster over criticism, finds support from Elon Musk

19 January 2025 at 12:57

Novak Djokovic moved to the Australian Open quarterfinals on Sunday with a straight-set victory over Jiří Lehecka in the fourth round of the tournament.

But Djokovic’s dominance was overshadowed by what happened when he left the court. Djokovic refused to speak to Australia’s Channel 9, the official broadcaster of the tournament for the host country, over journalist Tony Jones’ remarks about the Serbian star.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Djokovic said he wanted an apology from the station and Jones without mentioning Jones by name. He said, "Famous sports journalist who works for the official broadcaster, Channel 9... made a mockery of Serbian fans and also made insulting and offensive comments toward me."

Jones called Djokovic overrated and a has-been.

He said he will continue to boycott speaking to the network.

"I leave it to Channel 9 to handle this the way they think they see fit. That’s all," he said.

Djokovic immediately left the court after defeating Lehecka. He was expected to speak to former tennis player Jim Courier on television. He told reporters at his press conference that he was still upset with Jones and Channel 9.

The tennis star said he spoke to Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley as well.

"I just wanted to make sure that he knows where I stand and the reasons behind it," he said. "So I told him, ‘If you guys want to fine me for not giving an on-court interview, that’s OK.’ I’ll accept that because I feel like this is something that needs to be done. That’s all there is to it."

Billionaire X owner Elon Musk weighed in on the situation in a social media post.

"It’s way better just to talk to the public directly than go through the negativity filter of legacy media," Musk wrote.

Djokovic responded, "Indeed."

Travis Kelce feeling '22' after delivering best game of season in Chiefs' playoff win

19 January 2025 at 12:21

Travis Kelce delivered his best game of the season in the biggest game of the Kansas City Chiefs’ season to that point.

Kelce had seven catches on eight targets for 117 yards and a touchdown catch. It was the most receiving yards he’s recorded in a single game in the 2024 season as the Chiefs won the game, 23-14, to move to the AFC Championship Game for the seventh straight time.

The star tight end asked how he felt as he spoke to reporters.

"Twenty-two, baby, 22" he said referencing his girlfriend Taylor Swift’s song "22."

It was the same joke he used when he appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" ahead of the playoffs. He was asked if he felt like he has the energy of a young athlete.

"I don't know about you, but I'm feeling 22," he told McAfee earlier this month.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL STAR ASHTON JEANTY TALKS POSSIBILITY OF DEION SANDERS COACHING COWBOYS

Kelce was able to turn back the clock and put retirement rumors to rest for at least one more week.

Kelce faced all kinds of criticism during the season, with accusations flying about him being washed up or spending too much time with his girlfriend. He still managed to have 97 catches for 823 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games.

Even at age 35, Kelce was healthy for the entire season and only missed Week 18 as the Chiefs decided to rest their starters, having already wrapped up a bye week. With the whiff of retirement entering the air as the season enters the final stretch, Kelce was asked whether Swift had any thoughts about him calling it a career.

Kelce said he has support from Swift to keep playing if he wants to.

Texans' Kris Boyd breaks silence on coach-shoving incident: 'I was just turnt'

19 January 2025 at 11:05

Houston Texans cornerback Kris Boyd stunned the NFL audience on Saturday when he threw his helmet and shoved his special teams coach after the first play of the game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Boyd was able to chase down Chiefs wide receiver Nikko Remgio to stop a potential opening-play touchdown. He stripped the ball loose only for the Chiefs to recover. He couldn’t seem to get his emotions in check and ran to the sideline ripping off his helmet and shoving Frank Ross to the ground.

He talked about the incident after the game.

"I got the ball out," Boyd said. "And as I’m getting up, I look at the screen, I see nothing but white and they’re all pointing that way. So I was like, ‘Oh yeah, we got the ball, too. Turnover.’ And I was just turnt."

Boyd thought Houston recovered the fumble. There was also a penalty flag on the field as he was disciplined for removing his helmet.

"I was just too excited, did something that I shouldn’t have done. Learning from it," Boyd said. "Keep my helmet on."

Boyd said he apologized to the team after the incident and had no ill-will toward Ross.

"He told me, ‘Hey, listen, don’t worry about that,'" Boyd said. "We had a whole ballgame to play, but I was just trying to get my point across. Like I said, I'm not that type of person."

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, who didn’t see the shove, denounced the incident.

"What I saw is we can’t come out on the first play and throw our helmet," Ryans said. "That’s not what we teach. That’s not what we’re about at all."

The Chiefs won the game 22-14.

Tom Brady receives praise for observation at crucial point of Lions-Commanders playoff game

19 January 2025 at 09:57

Tom Brady received praise on Saturday for his call during a crucial moment of the Washington Commanders’ NFC divisional round victory over the Detroit Lions.

The Commanders were up three points with under 14:30 to play. They decided to go for it on 4th-and-2 from the Lions’ 5-yard line. A stop for the Lions and they would have gotten the ball back with ample amount of time to either tie the game or take the lead.

Brady noticed something wrong about the Lions’ defense as the Commanders broke their huddle.

"Need a timeout, 12 on the field, timeout" Brady said. "Timeout! Timeout! Nope. Nope. Oh no! What are they doing?"

The Lions were penalized for having 12 men on the field. The penalty gave the Commanders a new set of downs. Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. found the end zone two plays later and put Washington up 38-28. The Commanders won the game 45-28.

NFL REFS UNDER FIRE OVER QUESTIONABLE CALLS IN CHIEFS' PLAYOFF WIN OVER TEXANS

Brady, who called his first NFC divisional round game of his career, received some kudos for pointing out the Lions’ illegal defense.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell lamented the loss.

"We just didn't complement each other," he said. "We didn't get a stop when we needed one, and when we got a stop, we turned the ball over. With five turnovers – even if one was at the end and it was really four, that's too much."

The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star is in his first full season as a broadcaster for FOX. He will be on the call with Kevin Burkhardt for Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans next month.

College football star Ashton Jeanty talks possibility of Deion Sanders coaching Cowboys

19 January 2025 at 09:21

College football star Ashton Jeanty is likely to be the first running back taken in the upcoming NFL Draft in the spring.

Where Jeanty lands will be the big question. Some mock drafts have predicted the running back going to the Dallas Cowboys, which he said earlier this month would be a dream come true for him, as he played high school football in Frisco, Texas.

The Cowboys have been in the spotlight over the last week after parting ways with Mike McCarthy as head coach and rumors have swirled about the possibility of Deion Sanders leaving Colorado to lead Dallas.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Jeanty remarked to Fox News Digital about the possibility of playing for Sanders in Dallas.

"I think that would be a real great opportunity," Jeanty said. "Coach Prime is great at just giving guys opportunity and using them to the best of their abilities. Kind of like Travis Hunter playing both ways. Most coaches wouldn’t do that. I think he would excel at the position."

Jeanty, who spoke to Fox News Digital on behalf of his partnership with SAXX, also appreciated that Sanders was a "a man of faith."

"Obviously, I’m a man of faith. He’s a man of faith. Having my previous head coach be a man of faith is a great thing. Having a great relationship you can see he has with his guys off the field as he does on the field."

He told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that he knows some of the Cowboys’ facilities firsthand.

DALLAS COWBOYS NEXT HEAD COACH ODDS: WHO WILL REPLACE MIKE MCCARTHY?

"I would love to play for the Cowboys," he told the station. "It’d be like a dream come true. Obviously, I used to play in their practice stadium, and all our home games in high school, even my freshman year when we came down here for the Frisco Bowl, we practiced there again.

"So, it would just feel like I’m at home, honestly. I ain’t going to say too much, but Dallas, they’ve always had a good running back, and when they’ve got a good running back, they play a lot better."

Dallas may be the lone team that could take a running back early in the first round if Jeanty isn’t selected by the time the No. 12 pick rolls around.

Jeanty was the Heisman Trophy runner-up to Hunter in his final season in the collegiate ranks. He rushed for 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns for the Broncos.

Boise State made the College Football Playoff but were ousted in the quarterfinals.

NFL refs under fire over questionable calls in Chiefs' playoff win over Texans

19 January 2025 at 08:13

Officials in the Kansas City Chiefs AFC divisional round win over the Houston Texans on Saturday night came under scrutiny over questionable calls throughout the game.

From ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman to Texans players after the game to social media, officials were getting lit up from all angles.

There were two penalties called on the Texans that drew ire.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

Houston edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. was called for roughing the passer on a third down in the first quarter. Anderson appeared to push Mahomes in the chest after he had thrown the ball incomplete to tight end Travis Kelce. Anderson was flagged.

The second penalty came during a Mahomes scramble in the third quarter. He had two blockers on a run and three defenders bearing down on him. He moved to his right and then back to his left when he decided to slide.

Texans linebacker Henry To’oTo’o hit Mahomes around the neck as he slid. Despite the bang-bang nature of the play, To’oTo’o was called for unnecessary roughness.

The first penalty extended the drive and it ended with a field goal. The second penalty pushed Kansas City up the field and the drive ended with a touchdown.

FOX SPORTS PROVIDES TVS TO FIREFIGHTERS BATTLING LA WILDFIRES

The Chiefs won the game, 23-14.

Aikman ripped the penalty on To’oTo’o.

"Oh, come on," the Dallas Cowboys great said. "I mean, he’s a runner. I could not disagree with that one more He barely gets hit. That’s the second penalty now that’s been called against the Texans.…

"They’ve gotta address it in the offseason. You can’t, as a quarterback, run around and play games with defenders and then be able to draw a penalty."

He was not the only one who thought the officials made a mistake.

Texans personnel spoke out about it after the game as well.

"We knew going into this game it was us versus everybody," Houton head coach DeMeco Ryans said, via KPRC-TV. "When I say everybody, it’s everybody. All of the whatever… The naysayers, the doubt right. Everybody we had to go against today. Knowing that going into this game, knowing what we were up against, we can’t make the mistakes that we made."

Anderson said the team knew it was going to be "us versus the refs."

Texans running back Joe Mixon was also peeved.

"Everybody know how it is, playing up here, you can never leave it into the refs’ hands," Mixon said. "But I mean the whole world see what it is, bro. It is what it is."

Head referee Clay Martin explained the calls to a pool reporter after the game.

He said the call on Anderson was a result from "forcible contact to the face mask area," which warranted the penalty flag. He said there was forcible contact to Mahomes’ "hairline" on the other unnecessary roughness call.

The Chiefs were able to keep Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud at bay the entire game. The Chiefs sacked Stroud eight times, including three from George Karlaftis.

Let’s all feel a sense of community and help the people of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. Come on, let’s do the right thing.

"This is not the time to give people even more stress or more worry and more lack of confidence."

Looting has been a major issue as firefighters work to contain the infernos. Authorities have arrested at least a dozen people in connection with looting and arson.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom called for looting in fire evacuation zones to be a felony after prosecutors in Southern California urged him to issue harsher penalties, Fox News Digital previously reported.

"Preying on people at their most vulnerable is despicable, these criminals are among the worst kinds," Newsom said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital on Thursday afternoon.

Newsom said "looting has never been legal here" and that "it will not be tolerated" as the state continues to battle the ravenous inferno that broke out on Jan. 7.

19 January 2025 at 07:04

Famed basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale will not be making his anticipated return to the booth next week to call Duke vs. Wake Forest on ESPN after an accident in his Florida home.

"I had an accident at my home in Florida, and that has created some new health challenges and near-term physical limitations for me," Vitale said.

"Now, I'm just going to have to wait some more. I'm not sure exactly when that will be, yet l'm expected to make a full recovery and will provide updates when I have more information. Despite this latest setback, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends, and ESPN teammates."

DICK VITALE ENTERS CAITLIN CLARK DEBATE AFTER ESPN ANALYST DOUBLES DOWN ON HOT TAKE

Vitale has not called a game in two years amid battles with various health conditions, including cancer in his vocal cords.

Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021, then diagnosed with lymphoma months later. He returned in the fall of 2021, but later had to step away to undergo surgery on his vocal cords.

Vitale announced in summer 2023 that cancer had spread to his vocal cords, and later to his lymph nodes, leaving him with battles against four types of cancer in a four-year span.

He underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy and more surgery, over the last two years, before announcing he was cancer-free earlier this month.

However, after his recent fall, Vitale will have at least one more recovery to make before college basketball fans get to hear him call another game.

FOX Sports provides TVs to firefighters battling LA wildfires

19 January 2025 at 07:00

FOX Sports provided televisions to first responders in order for them to watch the NFL playoffs during their shift breaks as they battled the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

FOX Sports' NFL reporter Jay Glazer, who was at the Palisades Incident Command Post in Malibu, explained to Fox News how the partnership came to be before the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions playoff game on FOX.

"My wife and I actually live about 200 yards away. We were evacuated. But this week, like so many others from California, we were coming down bringing protein bars, whatever we could do, just trying to raise morale. Two nights ago, some firemen said, ‘You know what we really want? We would really want to watch football.’ I said, I know somebody who could make that happen," he said.

"I call our boss over at FOX Sports, CEO Eric Shanks, and he’s like, ‘What a great idea!’ And he got right on it. And within a day, we came down here yesterday and we got this done in a day, where we basically put TVs in the area where these guys come back to their shifts, and them are a lot of 24-hour shifts. They come back and they get a place to decompress, eat. That's where the TVs are.

"We're not just showing our game on FOX, we're showing all the games this weekend. It's just our way of saying thank you for so many of these people who, you know, they left their own homes to try and save ours."

FORMER BREWERS STAR RYAN BRAUN PRAISES FIREFIGHTERS BATTLING LA WILDFIRES: 'TRULY HEROES'

He said during FOX Sports' NFL pregame show that Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and Lions head coach Dan Campbell Facetimed the firefighters before their playoff game, which took place on FOX.

Glazer said the coaches were "enamored with our heroes."

"For us to be able to jump in and just give them some normalcy, boost their morale – that’s what they need," he added. "I'm hearing stories from these guys that, you know, those first couple of days throughout their 48 straight hours and things they've seen, anything we could do, just to say we love you and we thank you, we’re in."

More than two dozen people have died and thousands of structures have burned down in the midst of the fires that have plagued the region.

Lions waste best season in franchise history after falling apart to underdog Commanders in home playoff game

18 January 2025 at 21:39

A franchise-record 15 regular season wins was washed down 8-mile road for the Detroit Lions

In a disastrous 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders on Saturday, the Lions watched their best regular season in franchise history go to waste.

Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels threw for two touchdowns in a near flawless performance, as Washington reached the NFC championship game for the first time since winning the Super Bowl 33 years ago.

"It’s a surreal moment," Daniels said.

The sixth-seeded Commanders (14-5) were nearly double-digit underdogs against the Super Bowl favorite Lions (15-3) and overcame doubts as they did all season with a rookie quarterback, new coach and general manager.

"I always believed that we could achieve more than people give us credit for," Daniels said.

Detroit, the NFC’s No. 1 seed for the first time, doomed its chances by turning it over five times.

"If you turn the ball over five times against that team, it is going to be hard to win," Lions coach Dan Campbell said.

Washington rookie Mike Sainristil had two interceptions, including one on a trick play with receiver Jameson Williams throwing into coverage off a reverse in the fourth quarter. And Quan Martin returned a pick 40 yards for a touchdown.

Jared Goff threw three picks and lost a fumble, turning it over three times in the ill-fated first half.

Daniels finished with 299 yards passing and 51 yards rushing, and — just as important — didn’t turn the ball over.

He became the second rookie quarterback to knock off a top-seeded team, joining Joe Flacco, who led Baltimore past Tennessee on Jan. 10, 2009.

"Nothing surprises me with him," said receiver Terry McLaurin, who turned a short pass from Daniels into a 58-yard touchdown.

First-year coach Dan Quinn led Washington to its first playoff win in 19 years last week. The Commanders rallied past Tampa Bay for their sixth comeback win and fifth straight on the final play from scrimmage in regulation or overtime.

The Commanders, who converted 3 of 4 fourth downs, didn’t let Detroit keep it that close.

"Give them credit," Campbell said. "They earned that game, and we didn’t."

Washington outscored Detroit 28-14 in the second quarter — the highest-scoring quarter in NFL playoff history — to take a 31-21 lead at halftime.

Daniels had 242 yards passing in the first half, setting a rookie record one week after becoming the first rookie to lead his team in yards rushing and passing in a playoff win.

The former LSU star, who was the No. 2 pick overall, was 22 of 31, including the long TD on the screen to McLaurin and a 5-yard throw for a score to Zach Ertz in the second quarter.

Brian Robinson ran for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

Goff finished 23 of 40 for 313 yards with a touchdown pass to Sam LaPorta that gave the Lions their last lead midway through the second quarter.

Detroit’s Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Amon-Ra St. Brown had eight receptions for 137 yards.

Goff fumbled in a collapsing pocket on third-and-1 from the Commanders 17 late in the first quarter and Washington took advantage.

Daniels converted a fourth-and-3 from the Detroit 9 to extend a drive capped by Robinson’s 2-yard touchdown run.

Three snaps after Daniels’ TD throw to McLaurin, Goff overthrew his intended target and Martin intercepted it and took it to the end zone, putting the Commanders ahead 24-14. Goff took a hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu on the interception return and was evaluated for a concussion.

With backup Teddy Bridgewater under center, Williams scored on a 61-yard reverse.

Detroit’s defense, though, could not stop the Commanders all night. Washington set a season high in points.

The Lions had a chance to cut into the deficit in the final minute of the first half, but Goff’s pass over the deep middle was picked off by Sainristil in the end zone.

The Lions lost season will now find a place in the franchise's chronicled history of disappointment.

The Lions organization is often considered one of the least successful in the NFL, being just one of four franchises that has never reached the Super Bowl.

The Lions are also one of two franchises that had an 0-16 season, becoming the first team to do it in 2008. The Cleveland Browns became the only other team to do it, joining the club nine years later in 2017. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went 0-14 in their first season in the NFL in 1976, before the league expanded to 16 games.

Prior to last season, Detroit had gone 32 years without even winning a playoff game. It snapped that streak last postseason with wins against the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the Lions' run halted after blowing a 24-7 third-quarter lead to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

The Lions never had such a lead against Washington on Saturday, but the stunning loss sent many Detroit fans home in a bitter mood, all the same.

JD Vance mocks Biden's 28th Amendment announcement with Pete Rose Hall of Fame comparison

18 January 2025 at 18:17

President Biden's recent declaration that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is now "the law of the land" has prompted mockery in his final days in office. Biden isn't even safe from insults from Vice President-elect JD Vance.

Vance responded to Biden's declaration in a post on X, joking that Biden should put the late disgraced MLB icon Pete Rose in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

"Hey Joe if we’re doing fake s--- on the way out can you declare Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame?" Vance wrote. "See you in two days!"

Rose, who died back in September, was banned from MLB for life for illegally betting on games.

Rose was banned in 1989 after an investigation concluded that he not only gambled on MLB games, but went so far as to wager on games involving the Cincinnati Reds when he was managing the team.

Rose signed an agreement with Commissioner Bart Giamatti declaring him permanently ineligible for baseball but allowing him to petition for reinstatement and avoid a formal declaration that he bet on baseball. Multiple appeals by Rose for reinstatement over the last few decades have failed.

As a player, Rose won three World Series titles, two with the Reds and one with the Philllies, while making 17 All-Star games and winning NL MVP in 1973. He famously still holds the record for most hits in MLB history with 4,256.

PETE ROSE ON MLB BAN FOR GAMBLING IN LAST INTERVIEW: 'OTHER GUYS WILL KILL SOMEBODY AND BE BACK IN THE GAME

Yet, his betting scandal has made him one of the most controversial holdouts of the baseball Hall of Fame since his retirement. His absence from the Hall of Fame is one of the sport's most fiercely debated controversies.

So Vance had no reservations about referencing Rose's famed Hall of Fame controversy to mock the outgoing president.

Citing the American Bar Association in the statement, Biden argued that the ERA has "cleared all necessary hurdles to formally be added to the Constitution." Biden added that he agreed with "the ABA and with leading constitutional scholars that the Equal Rights Amendment has become part of our Constitution." However, despite Biden’s argument, the National Archives disagreed.

In a post on X calling the ERA the "law of the land," implying that it is already part of the Constitution, which is not the case. Social media users were quick to point this out, with some calling the president a "dictator."

The ERA, a proposed amendment to the constitution that would guarantee "equal rights under the law" to all Americans regardless of sex. Its latest iteration was a rapid response by New York Democrats to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson’s Women’s Health Organization decision in June 2022.

Bears brass engaged in talks about potential trade for Steelers coach Mike Tomlin: report

18 January 2025 at 17:58

The Chicago Bears relieved Matt Eberflus of his head coaching duties in November, just one day after he received considerable blame for mismanaging the clock in a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Eberflus' nearly three-year tenure in the Windy City was marred by a flurry of last-second losses and ended with a six-game losing streak. Thomas Brown became interim head coach.

The Bears are now searching for the franchise's next head coach and have already interviewed several candidates, keeping in line with general manager Ryan Poles' previous vow to cast a wide net during the search.

But, according to a new report from ESPN, one of the ways the team explored filling its head coaching vacancy involved the acquisition of Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin via a trade.

The Bears recently contacted the Steelers to inquire about potentially gaining permission to speak to and possibly execute a trade for the Super Bowl-winning coach, according to the report. The Steelers rejected the request, sources told ESPN.

Conversations are not believed to have reached Tomlin, who recently responded to questions about potential trade offers from other teams with a simple message: "Save your time." Tomlin's contract reportedly includes a no-trade clause.

STEELERS' GEORGE PICKENS MAKES STUNNING REMARK AFTER PLAYOFF LOSS VS. RAVENS

The Steelers finished the regular season with a 10-7 record, which maintained Tomlin's distinction of never having a record below .500. However, the team ended its season on a four-game losing streak.

Pittsburgh then got knocked out of the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens in the wild-card round. It has now been eight years since the Steelers have won a playoff game.

Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is believed to be one of the most sought after candidates this hiring cycle. Earlier this week, the Bears announced they interviewed Johnson

They also interviewed Arthur Smith, Brian Flores, Mike McCarthy, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and several others.

Despite ending the season with a 5-12 record, Chicago's roster does have talent at key positions. The Bears' next head coach will be tasked with developing quarterback Caleb Williams, the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The coaching staff will also have the opportunity to work with wide receivers Rome Odunze and DJ Moore.

Elsewhere, linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is a two-time Pro Bowler, and Jaylon Johnson is a talented cornerback.

While the New England Patriots filled their head coaching vacancy in short order by hiring Mike Vrabel, the Bears, Jets, Saints, Jaguars and Raiders continue their respective searches.
