The 2020s are almost half over, but it’s still too soon to determine if this decade will produce any of the best sci-fi movies of all time.
That’s not to say that there haven’t been some great science fiction movies in the last five years. The genre seems to be having a resurgence between theatrical releases and original streaming movies.
The Watch With Us team recently put together our picks for the 10 best sci-fi movies of the 2020s so far, but we reserve the right to revise the list if something better comes along.
We wouldn’t be shocked if one or more movies join this list by the end of 2025, including Avatar: Fire and Ash. But for now, the following films are the ones we selected.
If this list were for the best special effects in the sci-fi movies of the 2020s, then Avatar: The Way of Water would have been No. 1. Director James Cameron revisits the world of Pandora 16 years after the events of Avatar. In that time, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) married and had children while living peacefully alongside the other Na’vi. That peace is shattered when human forces from the Resources Development Administration invade Pandora with an even larger assault force than before.
Like a ghost back from the dead, Jake’s nemesis, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), returns through a cloned Na’vi avatar, and his knowledge of the Sullys scares Jake. To protect his family, Jake relocates and joins the Metkayina, a clan of Na’vi who live by the sea. But the Sully family can only hide for so long before Quaritch catches up to them.
The two previous Quiet Place films followed a family after the world was invaded by blind alien creatures that hunt by sound rather than by sight. That gave A Quiet Place: Day One a sense of inevitable dread, since this prequel is about how the “normal” world ended. Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) was already facing the end of her life to cancer when the invasion began, but she emerges as one of the few survivors of the initial attack.
Sam and a stranger named Eric (Joseph Quinn) band together to find a way out of New York City after the bridges are cut off by the military. Above all else, they have to remain as silent as possible, or else their escape attempt will be over before it begins.
A Quiet Place: Day One is streaming on Paramount+.
8. ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ (2024)
The Planet of the Apes movies have come a long way from the fake-looking ape masks that the actors had to wear in the original movies. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth modern movie in the series — not counting the 2001 remake — and the special effects are jaw-dropping. The story is also a clean break from the previous trilogy that takes place three centuries after the death of Caesar.
Noa (Owen Teague), a young ape in the Eagle clan, is the only member of his tribe who isn’t captured by the tyrant Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), a duplicitous ape who has perverted Caesar’s teachings while enslaving humans and apes alike. To free his people, Noa befriends an orangutan named Raka (Peter Macon) and Mae (Freya Allan), a human girl who has her own agenda and a burning hatred for Proximus.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is streaming on Hulu.
Jordan Peele‘s third film as a director, Nope, is a sci-fi/horror story that features Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as siblings Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. and Emerald “Em” Haywood. As their family business starts to go under, and theme park owner Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun) buys up their horses, OJ and Em realize that they can turn their fortunes around if they’re able to catch a nearby UFO on film.
The siblings’ scheme attracts the attention of a tech expert, Angel Torres (Brandon Perea), who eagerly offers to help. However, they fail to realize just how dangerous the UFO really is or what will happen if it inevitably turns its attention towards them.
David Lynch previously attempted to adapt Frank Herbert‘sDune in 1984, but Denis Villeneuve‘s version of the story finally captured the grand scope of the novel. Between Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, Villeneuve already had two terrific sci-fi movies under his belt. But Dune was a major upgrade from Villeneuve’s previous efforts and it lived up to the novel’s epic story.
In the distant future, humanity has expanded across the universe under the rule of a galactic empire. Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) — the son of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) — experiences visions he can’t explain after the House Atreides is given control of Arrakis, the most important planet in the empire. Whoever controls the spice mines of Arrakis controls the universe. However, the Antreides family faces treachery that may mean the end of their house unless Paul can find a way to survive among the Fremen who live in the harsh deserts of Arrakis.
Through the first five years of the decade, there haven’t been any Star Wars or Star Trek movies in theaters. That’s why Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the only theatrically released action-adventure space opera from the last half-decade. Writer and director James Gunn was able to overcome the onset of superhero fatigue by creating an emotional story centered on Rocket, as voiced by Bradley Cooper. After Rocket suffers near-fatal wounds during an attack by Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), the rest of the Guardians discover they won’t be able to save him without retrieving information from his creator, the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).
As Rocket relives his tragic origin through painful flashbacks, the Guardians turn to Gamora (Zoe Saldaña), a temporal duplicate of their late friend and the former lover of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). This version of Gamora wants nothing to do with Peter, but the Guardians can’t save Rocket without her help.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is streaming on Disney+.
The Wild Robot is one of DreamWorks Animation’s best movies in recent memory, and it drew some comparisons to Pixar’s WALL-E when it was first released. Unlike WALL-E, Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) is more loquacious when she is stranded in a wild, uninhabited area where many of the animals are afraid of her. Not even Roz’s ability to communicate with the wildlife can quell their fear.
Regardless of her early difficulties, Roz finds a new purpose in life as the adoptive guardian of a young goose she calls Brightbill (Kit Connor) and through her friendship with a fox named Fink (Pedro Pascal). Yet just as Roz settles into this new phase of her existence, a remnant of her old life arrives with the intent of forcibly taking Roz back to their corporate masters.
The Predator franchise badly needed some fresh ideas and a new perspective. It got both in Prey, a prequel film set hundreds of years before the events of Predator. Co-writer and director Dan Trachtenberg set the story in 1719 as a primitive and feral predator (Dane DiLiegro) arrives on Earth looking for a hunt. And only humans are suitable prey for this beast.
Amber Midthunder leads the human cast as Naru, a young Comanche woman who desperately wants to be a warrior like her brother, Taabe (Dakota Beavers). Although the tribe berates Naru for her ambition, she is one of the few survivors in the initial battles between the warriors and the predator. Naru realizes that the predator can’t be defeated by strength alone, but discovering its weakness may be the last thing she ever does.
The writing and directing team of Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert envisioned Everything Everywhere All at Once as a surreal sci-fi/fantasy martial arts action comedy/drama. As unlikely as it sounds, the film is all of those things and more. Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Quan Wang, a woman whose marriage to Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan) is failing while their family-owned laundromat faces an audit by IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis). Evelyn is also emotionally estranged from her daughter, Joy (Stephanie Hsu).
Things take a turn for the weird when a version of Waymond from another universe recruits Evelyn to face Jobu Tupak, a being who threatens the existence of the entire multiverse. Evelyn is soon thrust through the lives and memories of her countless counterparts in the multiverse as she reluctantly faces this threat while attempting to repair her relationships with Waymond and Joy. Everything Everywhere All at Once struck a chord with audiences and critics, and it took home Oscars for the Daniels, Yeoh, Quan and Curtis on its way to winning the Best Picture award.

As great as Dune is, Dune: Part Two is even better. Unlike its predecessor, the sequel doesn’t have an abrupt ending, and it feels more like a complete movie. Following the fall of House Atreides, Paul (Chalamet) and his mother, Lady Jessica (Ferguson), live among the Fremen. Because of Paul’s ability to master their ways, several of the Fremen believe that he may be the leader predicted by a prophecy.
Paul’s Fremen lover, Chani (Zendaya), rejects the idea that he is their messiah and only bonds with him because he rejects the mantle of leadership. But as the Fremen’s struggle to reclaim their planet invites harsh retaliation from House Harkonnen and even Emperor Shaddam IV (Christopher Walken) himself, Paul may not have any choice but to embrace his destiny at the cost of his soul.
Taylor Swift celebrated her huge career milestone on a girls’ night out with BFF Selena Gomez in New York City.
The longtime friends dined together at the swanky Monkey Bar in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday, May 31, while Taylor’s boyfriend Travis Kelce was in Kansas City for the annual Big Slick charity live show benefiting pediatric cancer research, according to pictures obtained by Deuxmoi.
The Monkey Bar is connected to the historic Hotel Elysée, and originally opened in the 1930s as a piano bar for ritzy guests. The eatery got its name from a hand-painted wraparound mural of monkeys by caricaturist Charlie Vella in the 1950s.
Swift, 35, had a lot to celebrate with Gomez, 32, since she announced on Friday, May 30, that she’d purchased the rights to her master recordings. For the past several years, Swift has spent considerable effort re-recording her first six albums because she didn’t own the original recorded versions.
Swift’s masters became a point of contention when music impresario Scooter Braun purchased her former record label Big Machine Records in 2019, thus giving him control of the six albums she recorded for the label. A highly-publicized feud between Swift and Braun developed before Braun eventually sold off her master recordings to Shamrock Capital for a reported $300 million in 2020.
On Friday, Swift stunned fans by announcing in an open letter that she’d reached an unexpected agreement with Shamrock to gain control of her masters.
“I’m trying to gather my thoughts into something coherent, but right now my mind is just a slideshow. As a flashback sequence of all the times I daydreamed about, wished for, and pined away for a chance to get to tell you this news,” she wrote.

“I almost stopped thinking it could happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away. But that’s all in the past now.”
Swift thanked her loyal Swifties for supporting her through her Eras Tour, which she said helped her make a deal for her masters.
“I’ve been bursting into tears of joy at random intervals ever since I found out that this is really happening,” Swift revealed. “I really get to say these words: All of the music I’ve ever made… now belongs… to me.”
Swift was supported by many of her famous friends and fans following the announcement, including her boyfriend Kelce and close pal Gomez.
“Yes you did that Tay! So proud,” Gomez replied via Instagram.
Perhaps nobody was more excited than Swift super-fan Flavor Flav, who has even dubbed himself the “King Swiftie.”
“Congratulations to Taylor Swift @taylorswift13,” Flavor Flav wrote via X. “May you have peace and happiness and continue to gain more of that. This community is so happy for you,!!! .”
Even Swift’s one-time nemesis Braun offered her congratulations in a statement to Us Weekly on Friday, saying, “I am happy for her.”
In addition to the momentous news about her masters, Swift also offered a candid update on the status of the rerecorded version of 2017’s Grammy Award-nominated album Reputation.
“Full transparency: I haven’t even re-recorded a quarter of it,” Swift wrote in her letter to fans. “The Reputation album was so specific to that time in my life, and I kept hitting a stopping point when I tried to remake it. All that defiance, that longing to be understood while feeling purposefully misunderstood, that desperate hope, that shame-born snarl and mischief.”
Swift continued, “To be perfectly honest, it’s the one album in those first six that I thought couldn’t be improved upon by redoing it. Not the music or photos or videos. So, I kept putting it off. There will be a time (if you’re into the idea) for unreleased vault tracks from that album to hatch.”
Brooke Shields’ daughters Rowan and Grier Henchy have paid tribute to their mom on her 60th birthday.
“Happy birthday to my role model, partner in crime, and best friend. Thank you for always being my rock,” Rowan, 22, wrote via her Instagram Story on Saturday, May 31.
Rowan shared multiple family photos in honor of Shields’ milestone birthday on Saturday, in addition to referring to her mom as “everyone’s favorite girl boss” in one slide. Grier, 19, called Shields “the coolest mama I know” and shared a vintage picture of her mother kissing her as a baby.
“Woke up today in paradise… and in a new decade of life! This is 6⃣0⃣! Thank you for all of the birthday love,” the Blue Lagoon actress, 60, wrote via Instagram.
Shields definitely received lots of “birthday love” on her post, with fellow former teen idol Shaun Cassidy, Monica Lewinsky and Sophia Bush among those joining in on the celebration.

Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet looked loved-up as they exchanged some serious PDA at an NBA playoff game on Saturday, May 31.
The couple were seated courtside at the Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana, as the New York Knicks took on the Indiana Pacers in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Jenner, 27, and Chalamet, 29, were both decked out head-to-toe in Knicks gear as they exchanged kisses and hugs during the game.
The couple have attended multiple Knicks games this season, though usually when the New York team plays at its hometown arena, Madison Square Garden. Earlier in the week, diehard Knicks fan Chalamet predicted that the Knicks-Pacers series would conclude back at MSG.
“I’ve got a prediction. Let me get a prediction: Game 7 back at the Garden,” he told Bleacher Report on Thursday, May 31. “Let’s go!”
Unfortunately, Chalamet’s hopes were dashed when the Knicks lost a competitive clash with the Pacers on Saturday, 108-125. The Pacers will now represent the Eastern conference against Western conference champs the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA finals, beginning Thursday, June 5.

Three former Doctor Odyssey crew members are suing production company Disney over allegedly experiencing sexual harassment on set.
Caroline Mack, Alicia Haverland and Ava Steinbrenner — who worked in Doctor Odyssey’s prop department— filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, May 30, over accusations of sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination and negligent hiring practices. The former Doctor Odyssey employees have not specified the damages they are seeking, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
In their lawsuit, the trio say that they endured an “unchecked campaign of sexual harassment” from their supervisor Tyler Patton, including unwanted touching and sexual remarks. Patton is not named as a defendant in the suit, with the former Doctor Odyssey crewmembers instead suing Disney-owned production company 20th Century Television directly.
Tyler served as an assistant prop master on Doctor Odyssey’s first season while his wife Tammie Patton was his direct supervisor. Among a litany of allegations in the lawsuit, Tyler’s former subordinates say he made numerous sexual comments to female staffers, including telling one that “no one had broke her” yet. They also accuse him of touching female coworkers without consent — including grabbing women’s butts and giving lingering hugs — as well as texting pornographic materials.
One alleged incident relayed in the lawsuit involved Tyler texting a link to the prop department for a supposed news article about Joe Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race, only for the link to direct them to a picture of a naked man instead.
“If I wasn’t f***ing the boss, I’d be fired,” Tyler allegedly said.
Mack insisted that she reported the alleged inappropriate workplace conduct and mishandling of replica firearms to the 20th Century human resources department and her union. Tyler was later fired, at which time the ex-Doctor Odyssey crewmembers say they faced workplace retaliation from his wife Tammie and were eventually laid off. Mack, Haverland and Steinbrenner claim they have been effectively blackballed by the studio.
“[The studio] almost immediately hired a whole new set of employees to replace Plaintiffs and other Props Department employees for the Dr. Odyssey Season 1 project,” their complaint reads. “Clearly, no ‘lay off’ had occurred. Instead, Defendants wiped the Prop Department’s slate clean to avoid having to deal with any remaining employee-relations issues tied to Tyler Patton’s and Tammie Patton’s misconduct.”

“Doctor Odyssey isn’t currently on our schedule [for the fall],” Erwich confirmed. “Ryan’s really busy. He’s doing a lot with us. 9-1-1, 9-1-1 Nashville, All’s Fair [for streamer Hulu]. So we’re just continuing that creative conversations with him.”
Murphy created the medical drama with two of his frequent collaborators, Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and Grotesquerie’s Jon Robin Baitz and All’s Fair’s Joe Baken.

Sandler, 58, along with costars Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald, appeared during Netflix’s 2025 Tudum special on Saturday, May 31, to field some questions about the upcoming sequel and reveal the movie’s full length trailer.
“Happy Gilmore sucks now?” a fellow golfer asks in amazement in the opening moments of the teaser as he watches the once-prolific golfer (Sandler) fall on his face while trying to swing a club. “Eat a back of d**ks!” Sandler replies in typical Happy fashion.
The trailer reveals that years after becoming a legend on the green, Happy has stopped playing golf and has seemingly lost his touch. When his daughter (played by Sandler’s real life daughter Sadie) wants to attend ballet school, Happy and his wife, Virginia (Bowen), realize the only way they’ll be able to afford her dreams is if Happy returns to the game he thought he left behind.
The teaser follows Happy and he tries to get back in the swing of things through practice, breaking in his new caddy (played by Bad Bunny), entering himself in a tournament, releasing some frustrations wi and even facing off with his longtime rival Scooter McGavin (McDonald).
“You stole my life from me,” Scooter says. “Why would I want to steal the life of someone who eats pieces of s*** for breakast?” Happy replies before the two square off in a graveyard.
Elsewhere in the trailer, Kelce makes an appearance as a hotel worker who gives Bad Bunny a good old fashioned scare. “BOO!” Kelce yells in Happy’s face, causing him to yelp in fear.
Netflix announced in May 2024 that plans for a sequel were in the works. The original 1996 film follows Happy as he discovers his natural talent for golf after an unsuccessful career as an ice hockey player. After entering a golf tournament hoping to win money to save his grandmother’s house from foreclosure, a trick shot wins him the championship, the girl — and his grandma’s home back.
A teaser trailer in March revealed that Happy Gilmore 2 would pick up with Happy as a dad and husband — and someone who thought golf was in the rearview mirror.
“We’re not done with golf,” Bowen’s Virginia tells Happy as they seemingly move out of their current home. “Let them see the Happy I fell in love with.”
The teaser also confirmed that Kelce would have a role in the film as what seems to be a hotel worker welcoming Happy back to his old stomping grounds.
“The whole thing was to get to hang out with Travis. That’s why we put it together,” Sandler joked during an August 2024 episode of Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. “We’re going there [to New Jersey]. Travis, by the way, thank you, I heard you talking about [Happy Gilmore 2] on your show, you guys.”

Netflix bought the rights to two Knives Out sequels in a $469 million deal that took place in 2021. The streaming service released the first follow-up in December 2022 titled Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and in May 2024, Johnson dropped a teaser for the third installment of his Knives Out franchise called Wake Up Dead Man.

During a September 2022 interview with Variety, Craig confirmed his plans to reprise the role of the detective in future Knives Out films. “If he keeps writing them, I’ll keep doing them. That’s what makes it easy then, he’s such a wonderful writer that it’s there on the page for me to do," the actor shared.
In December 2022, Johnson hinted that he was "just starting to figure out" the layout of the third film.
"We have one more movie in our contract with Netflix, but I don't see it as a trilogy," the director told RadioTimes. "I see it as an ongoing thing. As long as Daniel and I are having fun and coming up with something new and exciting every time, we'll keep doing this as long as we can."

Twilight star Cam Gigandet has denied owing a former landlord $60,000 in unpaid rent on a Los Angeles home.
Court documents obtained by Us Weekly revealed that the landlord, Ronald Goldhammer, sued Gigandet and his ex-wife Dominique Geisendorff over allegations that they “have failed to pay the entire rent from November 2023 through February 2024” on a property they were renting from him. In Touch first reported the news.
According to legal motions, Goldhammer is seeking $60,000 to rectify the unpaid rent and additional damages to the home. Goldhammer said that he agreed to rent the property for $6,650 per month on a one-year lease, though he later learned Geisendorff and Gigandet vacated the home.
“Defendants, thereafter, breached the lease by failing to pay the entire rent from November 2023 through February 2024,” Goldhammer argued in court documents. “Plaintiff then served the notice on Defendants demanding payment or forfeiture of the lease. Defendants failed to pay the rent owed, but nevertheless, continued to occupy the [home].”
Gigandet responded via his attorneys on May 15, stating that his dealings with his former landlord were always “reasonable, lawful and in good faith.” The actor also claimed that any damages to the property may have been caused by a third party.
“[Goldhammer’s] claims are barred, in whole or in part, because the conduct of [Gigandet] was not a substantial factor in bringing about [Goldhammer’s] alleged injuries and/or damages, if any, and therefore was not a contributing or proximate cause thereof,” Gigandet’s lawyers wrote.
They continued, “[Gigandet] is informed and believes and thereon alleges, he is excused from performance under the agreement alleged in the First Amended Complaint due to the acts, omissions, and/or material breaches of [Goldhammer] with respect to the matters and things alleged in the First Amended Complaint.”

Geisendorff filed for divorce from Gigandet after 13 years of marriage in August 2022, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of their split. The couple settled their divorce in July 2024 with Gigandet agreeing to pay child and spousal support as well as cover a portion of their marital debts.
“Cam shall provide Dominique monthly statements of income and shall provide any knowledge of upcoming work to Dominique as soon as possible,” the couple agreed in their divorce filing.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is one proud girl dad — to both of his daughters.
“Thank You, God! Welcome, Aurora Rayne! May 22, 2025. God is Great,” Prescott, 31, wrote via Instagram on Saturday, May 31. “I love you @sarahjane and the family we’ve created.”
Ramos, 31, gave birth to the couple’s second child earlier this month.
“Our sweet Aurora Rayne Prescott arrived on her due date nine days ago,” Ramos captioned her own social media announcement shared on Saturday. “We’ve been soaking it all in. So beyond grateful and in love with our family of four.”
“Count your blessings,” Prescott wrote via Instagram Story at the time. “Family of 4 .”
Ramos found out that she was pregnant on September 15, 2024, the same date as the Cowboys’ first home game of the season.

“It’s really special to be a female in this world in this day and age and to watch your siblings grow up and be empowered, taking notes and using you as an example, but [also] being themselves and growing into what makes them their own person,” Ramos told Sports Illustrated at the time. “It’s so beautiful to watch and I can’t wait to do the same with MJ and watch Dak become a girl dad, part two. He’s perfect. He’s the best girl dad ever.”
She added, “Fundamentally, I want my girls to know that being a great person will get you very far in life above all else.”
The outlet further reported that Prescott and Ramos always wanted to have children close in age.
The couple publicly debuted their relationship in November 2023.
“Entering a new decade with so much gratitude,” Ramos wrote via Instagram on November 17, celebrating her 30th birthday. “Blessed and thankful for my family and friends that celebrated with me in my new home I truly have everything I could wish for and have a feeling this next chapter will be the best one yet #30.”
Prescott replied, “So much to love in this post! Welcome to the 30 club, my love.”
“A little bit of Heaven sent down to Earth ,” she captioned maternity photos via Instagram. “Our immeasurable blessing. I cannot wait to raise a strong, confident, beautiful baby girl with you.”
Meghan Markle had even more footage that didn’t make the final cut of her hit Netflix series — and it’s full of “so much goodness.”
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, shared a short unaired clip from With Love, Meghan, on Instagram on Friday, May 30. In the video, Meghan can be seen cutting fruit with Randi Karin when she points out that pineapple wedges can be cut along the lines on the fruit.
“With pineapple, instead of just cutting it to make the perfect little bite, you follow the wedge,” she explained. “When nature has given you all the cues on how to have a perfect taste of something!”
The series was renewed for a second season in March, shortly after its release the same month. Since then, Meghan has been open about what viewers can expect from the next iteration of the show.
“Oh, how I love ASMR! If you’re loving Season 1, just wait until you sehe fun we cooked up on Season 2!” Meghan captioned an Instagram video in March 2025. “Thanks for joining the party, and an endless thanks to the amazing team and crew who helped bring it all to life!”
A release date for the second season has not yet been revealed.
The Duchess most recently delighted the cabin crew aboard an American Airlines flight. On May 22, a woman by the name of @ninavidavlogs on TikTok claimed Meghan boarded an American Airlines flight she was working on. She said the duchess left the crew a handwritten letter, thanking them for their attention and service during the flight.
Meghan is “so beautiful in person,” Nina said in the video. “She was so sweet. She wrote us a little handwritten note back. So we wrote her [a] note that said, ‘It’s a pleasure serving you. We love you real bad.’”
“And she wrote this note back that says, ‘Dear AA Girlies, thank you for the love, hospitality, and handwritten note. You know me well,’” the woman continued.
She went on to add that the Duchess of Sussex ended her personalized note with the words: “Forever Meghan.”
“You know, I can barely read this cursive, but look at this handwriting: it’s giving rich. It’s giving expensive. It’s giving princess,” she explained. “She also said she loved my nails and the captain on my last flight said they were intense. So, sir, it doesn’t matter what you think. The Queen says she likes them.”
