Compared to the last few months, there are more movies leaving Hulu in May than in recent memory. And it’s still a very modest list of departures.
Most of these films have flown way under the radar, including the Vanessa Kirby-led drama Italian Studies, in which she plays a woman who suddenly finds herself losing her memory.
One trend for the month is that a handful of Hulu’s acclaimed documentaries are going out the door, including The Last Tourist, The Capote Tapes, Not Going Quietly, and All the Streets Are Silent: The Convergence of Hip Hop and Skateboarding.
The good news for Hulu subscribers is that there don’t seem to be any major studio departures in terms of movies or TV shows, but that could always change in June. For now, the complete list of everything leaving Hulu in May 2025 is below.
Netflix is far from immune to losing some of its best movies from other studios.
April 30 will be the last day several great titles will be available on Netflix, including the 2014 drama Whiplash.
Damien Chazelle wrote and directed the film based on a short film he made with J.K. Simmons a year earlier. Simmons returned for the full-length movie, with future Top Gun: Maverick star Miles Teller in the other leading role.
Teller and Simmons were electrifying together and they powered this modestly budgeted $3.3 million film into a $50.4 million hit that was widely met with critical acclaim. Now, there’s less than a week before Whiplash leaves, and this is the one great movie on Netflix that you need to make the time to see before it disappears from the streaming service.
Miles Teller’s Breakthrough Performance Still Rules
Before Teller was cast in Whiplash, he only had a handful of prominent roles in the industry. This film elevated Teller to leading man status thanks to his outstanding turn as Andrew Neiman, a 19-year-old who wants to be a jazz drummer more than anything in the world.
Andrew’s character doesn’t start out fully formed. He’s painfully shy and doesn’t come out of his shell unless he’s performing. Through the course of the film, Andrew lets his ambition transform his personality and not always for the better. Even after landing Nicole (Melissa Benoist) as his girlfriend, Andrew still values his dreams more than the real people in his life.
This is driven home several times during the film, but especially when Andrew practices so hard that his fingers bleed. He wants to be the best jazz drummer possible, even if it threatens to destroy him.
J. K. Simmons’ Terence Fletcher Is an Unforgettable Nightmare
Andrew’s music mentor is Terence Fletcher (Simmons), a jazz instructor at the prestigious Shäfer Conservatory. Fletcher is the amalgamation of every overly harsh teacher you’ve ever had, and he’s probably worthy of a trigger warning.
Fletcher unleashes verbal and psychological abuse on his students that can be truly difficult to watch. It’s a role tailor-made for Simmons, who seems to be able to turn on Fletcher’s scorn and rage at a moment’s notice. That makes him a terrifying figure in the film because he knows how to destroy his students’ dreams and hopes with just a few choice words. And he’s completely merciless, even with Andrew.
There’s no question that Fletcher is the villain in this story, and yet Andrew always has this small hope that he’ll finally get the approval he so desperately needs from him. Simmons is so good in his role that he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and numerous other accolades for the film.
It’s a Drama That Plays Like a Thriller
There aren’t any twists in Whiplash that transform the story into something it isn’t supposed to be. The revelations that emerge about Fletcher seem like the natural progression of everything he did before that point in the movie. Once Andrew learns about a scandalous incident from Fletcher’s past, it’s less of a surprise and more of a confirmation that he’s a monster. And he never needed anything more than harsh words to break anyone.
Whiplash is a beautifully filmed drama with two exceptional performances from Teller and Simmons. But it also plays a lot like a thriller as the audience watches just how far Andrew will go for perfection. His self-destructive tendencies are readily apparent, but the audience is forced to wonder if Andrew can ever really pull back and see what he’s doing to himself. Fletcher may be his nemesis, but Andrew’s overpowering ambition is his greatest enemy. That’s why Whiplash is so incredibly compelling as Andrew’s struggle reaches its natural conclusion.
The Voice Kids alum Karen Silva has died after a hemorrhagic stroke. She was 17.
Silva’s death was announced “with deep sadness” via a statement on her official Instagram account on Thursday, April 24.
The teenager first shot into the spotlight when she appeared on The Voice Kids in 2020 when she was just 12 years old. While Silva did not win the music competition during her season, she made it to the semi-finals round.
In the post announcing the news of Silva’s death, it was explained that she had been hospitalized at São João Batista Hospital, in Volta Redonda, following a hemorrhagic stroke. It was here she passed away.
“Karen enchanted Brazil with her powerful voice and striking presence even in childhood, when she participated in The Voice Kids in 2020,” the post, which was written in Portuguese, read. “Since then, she has followed a luminous path, uniting talent, charisma and representation at every step.”
The post went on to describe Silva as an inspiration for others during her short life.
“More than an up-and-coming artist, Karen was a symbol of empowerment, especially for Black girls who found in her inspiration and strength to dream. Her music, her message and her joy leave a deep mark on all who met her and followed her journey,” the post continued.
It concluded: “In this moment of great pain, we send our solidarity to their parents, Manoella and Fernando, with friends, family and fans. May the memory of your light continue to guide us.”
Several days earlier on Monday April 21, another post shared via Silva’s Instagram account and also written in Portuguese revealed that the singer was battling some serious health issues.
“Singer Karen Silva is facing a health problem and, at the moment, she is still under medical care, with the support and affection of her family and team,” the post read. “We ask for respect, empathy and prayers as she recovers peacefully. Any updates will be made by our official channels. We thank everyone for the love.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, a hemorrhagic stroke “occurs when a blood vessel in the brain leaks or bursts and causes bleeding in the brain. The blood increases pressure on brain cells and damages them.”
Karen is survived by her parents, Manoella and Fernando, and her boyfriend, Marcelo.

After 9-1-1received backlash for killing off Peter Krause‘s character, Fire Country is losing two main cast members following a deadly season finale.
The third season wrapped up on Friday, April 25, with Vince (Billy Burke), Sharon (Diane Farr) and Walter Leone (Jeff Fahey) getting trapped in a building amid a fire. Bode (Max Thieriot) attempted to save them but it remained unclear who survived after an explosion caused the roof to collapse.
Elsewhere, Gabriela (Stephanie Arcila) faced off against her stalker while Jake (Jordan Calloway) planned to leave Cal Fire for a new job. There were multiple story lines that left Us on the edge of our seat but it was the news after the finale that came as a surprise.
Deadline and TVLine reported after the season 3 finale that Arcila, 35, would be exiting the show after three seasons. She is expected to potentially return as a guest star in the future while Burke, 58, is stepping down — with Vince seemingly being the casualty in the explosion.
While executive producers Joan Rater, Tony Phelan and Tia Napolitano confirmed Arcila’s departure in a postmortem interview with Deadline, they remained more tight-lipped about Burke’s future with the show.

“Also, going into Season 4, you don’t want the audience to ever feel complacent, to feel like they know exactly what they’re gonna get, and it’s gonna be the same thing that they’ve gotten,” he added. “You want to create lean-In moments where the real stakes of what’s involved with what these heroes do is always there. So the audience never knows what’s coming next.”
According to Napolitano, it “wasn’t decided earlier in the season” that Gabriela’s arc was over, adding, “It was during discussions about finding the end of the season. We spoke to Stephanie while we were shooting the finale.”
Napolitano wouldn’t weigh in on where Vince’s story goes from here. “We are not going to confirm who we’re losing,” she noted. “There will definitely be a devastating loss for everyone that remains in our family. No, shooting the finale, none of the actors knew.”
Fire Country is currently streaming on Paramount+.
Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew’s accuser, Virginia Giuffre, died in April 2025, with her family confirming her death was due to suicide.
Giuffre, who was just 41 at the time of her death in Neergabby, Australia, had been at the center of accusations against Prince Andrew and the late Epstein involving sexual abuse and sex trafficking.
“Giuffre lost her life to suicide, after being a lifelong victim of sexual abuse and sex trafficking,” her family said via the statement to People on Friday, April 25.
“Virginia was a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking. She was the light that lifted so many survivors. Despite all the adversity she faced in her life, she shone so bright. She will be missed beyond measure. The light of her life were her children Christian, Noah, and Emily.”

2000-2001: Alleged incidents involving Prince Andrew occur
Convicted child sex offenders Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were seen with Prince Andrew at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in Florida in 2000. According to Giuffre, Prince Andrew sexually assaulted her at Epstein’s home in New York the following year. Prince Andrew also sexually assaulted Giuffre at an “orgy” that took place on Epstein’s private Caribbean island that same year, she claimed. (Prince Andrew denied sexual assault occurred during these events.) Giuffre was 17 at the time that the events allegedly took place.
2015: Giuffre’s allegations against Prince Andrew emerge in Epstein court documents
During Epstein’s ongoing legal dramas relating to sex trafficking of minors, court documents emerged in Florida in April 2015 that alleged Prince Andrew had sex with Giuffre when she was 17 – which is under the age of consent in Florida. In response, Buckingham Palace denied the accusations against Prince Andrew at the time.
2019: Epstein dies in jail; Prince Andrew appears in disastrous BBC interview, then pulls out of public duties
While awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges, Epstein is found dead by suicide at New York City’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in August 2019. Three months later, Prince Andrew sat down for an infamous BBC interview where he attempted to downplay his association with the late Epstein.
Despite photo evidence existing of Prince Andrew and Giuffre standing side by side, the Duke of York raised eyebrows when denied ever crossing paths with her during the interview.
“I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever,” Andrew said of Giuffre at the time. “It just never happened.”

Following the broadcast of the interview, Andrew announced that he would be taking a step back from his duties as a member of the British royal family.
“It has become clear to me over the last few days that the circumstance relating to my former association with Jeffrey Epstein has [become] a major disruption to my family’s work and the valuable work going on in the many organizations and charities that I am proud to support,” he said in a statement. “Therefore, I have asked Her Majesty if I may step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, and she has given her permission.”
2021-2022: Giuffre launches court case against Prince Andrew
A civil lawsuit was launched in August 2021 against Prince Andrew by Giuffre, who accused him of sexually assaulting her when she was underage.
The former royal attempted to have the case against him thrown out but a New York judge rejected this attempt.
Prince Andrew agreed to settle his lawsuit in February 2022. According to documents filed and obtained by Us Weekly, the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money. A letter was submitted to the United States District Court in New York City, explaining that the parties plan on filing a stipulation dismissing the case within 30 days.
“Prince Andrew intends to make a substantial donation to Ms. Giuffre’s charity in support of victims’ rights,” the letter read. “Prince Andrew has never intended to malign Ms. Giuffre’s character, and he accepts that she has suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a result of unfair public attacks.”

March 2025: Giuffre’s bus accident and claims of ‘days to live’
Giuffre posted a disturbing photo via Instagram on March 30, 2025 and explained that she was hit by a school bus traveling at 110 kilometres per hour (approximately 70 miles per hour). As a result, she claimed that doctors have said she only has four days to live.
“This year has been the worst start to a new year, but I won’t bore anyone with the details but I think it important to note that when a school bus driver comes at you driving 110km as we were slowing for a turn that no matter what your car is made of it might as well be a tin can,” she wrote.

We know that she is with the angels.”
Giuffre’s attorney, Sigrid McCawley, also paid tribute following her death via a statement.
“Virginia was much more than a client to me; she was a dear friend and an incredible champion for other victims,” McCawley said. “Her courage pushed me to fight harder, and her strength was awe-inspiring. The world has lost an amazing human being today. Rest in peace, my sweet angel.”

Giuffre met former Jeffrey Epstein associateGhislaine Maxwell in 2000 while working as a locker room attendant at now-President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Maxwell introduced Giuffre to Epstein, and the pair later allegedly roped the young woman into their sex trafficking operation. Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in 2019 and died by suicide while in prison that August. In 2021, Maxwell was found guilty of recruiting young women for Epstein to traffic and abuse.
Giuffre also accused Prince Andrew of abusing her in 2001. Andrew denied having any memory of meeting Giuffre in a now notorious November 2019 interview with the BBC. “I never saw them. I mean you have to understand that his house, I described it more as almost as a railway station if you know what I mean in the sense that there were people coming in and out of that house all the time,” he told Emily Maitlis at the time.

In honor of PK’s 54th birthday, she posted a sweet tribute to her love: “My darling PK, you are my heart, my soul, my treasure, my today, my tomorrow, my forever, and my everything. When you wake up, I’ll be asleep, and it will be the first (and hopefully the last) birthday in 10 years that I’m not waking up by your side- but, we very much look forward to celebrating with you when we’re all together again. Happy birthday my love- I love you to the moon and back and around the stars.”
The swimsuit designer made headlines on October 27 after she was robbed at gunpoint in her California home.
“As you all know by now, I have been through a terrifying ordeal, one that no parent or person should ever have to experience,” Dorit shared via Instagram several days later. “I’ve received so many messages of love and support and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s truly overwhelming. My kids are unaware of what happened, they slept through it and I thank God for keeping my kids and myself from being physically harmed.”
She continued at the time: “My family now needs to start the healing process. I have thrown myself straight back into work as I want our family to return to normality as soon as possible.”
During an appearance at BravoCon, their RHOBH costar Erika Jayne speculated that Dorit and PK would be the next Housewives couple to call it quits. Dorit swiftly shut down the claim. “Misery loves company. What else can [I] say 🤷🏼♀️,” she wrote via Instagram comment. “Our friends, those that truly know us, know what we have and who we are.”
Erika later said she was joking when she made her comment.
Dorit and PK denied split reports after In Touch claimed they are “living separate lives” and published a photo of PK without his wedding ring. The couple admitted they have “had some challenging years” but “remain committed” to working through their issues together. “We have not separated nor are we planning to do so,” they said in a joint statement shared via social media. “Rather, we are focused on healing, making changes and doing the things that many couples have to do at some point in their marriage.”
Multiple sources told Us, meanwhile, that PK has been staying in a hotel in Los Angeles. “They both agree it’s the right thing to do,” one insider added. “It’s been a rough period for them. They want to say on amicable terms whether they stay together or not.”
Dorit announced the pair's separation in a statement, which read, "We as a couple have been subject to a lot of speculation about our marriage. We have had our struggles over the last few years and continue to work through them as two people who love each other and share two amazing children together."
She continued: "To safeguard our deep friendship and maintain a harmonious environment for our children we have made the mutual and difficult decision to take some time apart and reevaluate our relationship while we prioritize our children."
Ahead of the RHOBH season 14 premiere, Dorit gave Us an exclusive update on what it was like to film amid her and PK’s separation.
“Things don’t stay amicable between PK and I, and it was a big shock to me,” Dorit teased to Us. “Don’t forget, we had just separated when I filmed the show. Now here we are, some months later.”
Dorit added that despite tension, the pair have been focusing on “communication” which allowed them to reach a better place in their estranged relationship.
As Dorit began the New Year the Housewife confessed that she and PK were still in the “same place” from when they announced their separation.
“There is movement but it’s just not forward — it’s left to right. I’d love to go forward, and I’m consistently trying to advocate for that,” she said during the RHOBH After Show. “Ask me in another six months. Hopefully, I’ll have a better answer.”
During an episode of RHOBH season 14, Dorit claimed to receive a “seven-page email” about finances and custody arrangements.
“His expectations were within a month or two that I will be responsible for the mortgage and all the bills associated with the house,” Dorit alleged. “There was also discussion of custody, lawyers and threats of, if this doesn’t happen, I will be proceeding with divorce.”
Us confirmed that Dorit filed for divorce. In the paperwork, she cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. Dorit also asked for sole legal and physical custody of their children, Jagger and Phoenix and requested spousal support.

Sophie Nyweide‘s friend and former partner, Eden Herlihy, is remembering the good times she had with the late actress.
“She had hope … I’ve lost a lot of people to addiction sadly,” Herlihy said in an interview with TMZ on Friday, April 25. “Me and Sophie lost a lot of friends to this disease over the past couple of years. We knew the severity of it.”
Herlihy explained that she and Nyweide met at a residential treatment center called Elevations in Utah. Elevations focuses on helping kids from the age of 13 to 18 as they struggle with anxiety, depression, bullying and other issues.
As they knew each other for quite some time, Herlihy shared that she and Nyweide were by each other’s sides as they struggled with addiction themselves. Herlihy claimed that she was around when Nyweide “was using” drugs and stated they would also use together.
While Herlihy and Nyweide experienced loss due to addiction, she never thought that the former child star would meet the same fate.
“No one is ever the right person to go. No one is meant to go from this disease, at least in my opinion. But I never thought it would be her because we fought so hard to survive the stuff we’ve gone through in our lives,” she said. “She was the last person I was expecting to die from this disease because she was so strong.”
When Herlihy first met Nyweide, she noticed immediately how warm and welcoming she was to others.
“She didn’t judge anybody, she wasn’t like the regular girls of our age group that [were] judging each other,” Herlihy recalled. “She was kind off the bat. [She] wasn’t talking bad about anybody. She just wanted everybody to feel safe and cared for.”
Nyweide’s family confirmed on Tuesday, April 22, that the former child actress died. She was 24 years old.
“Sophie. A life ended too soon,” the obituary read. “May it not be in vain. May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better. Yes, we must all protect our children and do better.”
Officials in Bennington, Vermont, confirmed that Nyweide’s body was found on April 14 in a wooded area along the banks of the Roaring Branch River. An unnamed individual was with the former child actress at the time of her death and called emergency services. The person is cooperating with investigators.
According to Nyweide’s death certificate, which was obtained by Us Weekly, the actress was pregnant. While the paperwork did not state how far along she was in the pregnancy, a source told People that Nyweide was in the early stages.
Dorit Kemsley and her husband, PK Kemsley, have filed for divorce after nearly one year after announcing that they were taking some time apart.
Dorit filed for the dissolution of her marriage to PK on Friday, April 25, according to legal documents obtained by Us Weekly.
She cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the split. Dorit is also asking for sole legal and physical custody of the former couple’s children, son Jagger, 11, and daughter Phoenix, 9. In addition, Dorit is requesting spousal support.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars confirmed in May 2024 that they had separated after previously denying rumors of a split.
“We as a couple have been subject to a lot of speculation about our marriage. We have had our struggles over the last few years and continue to work through them as two people who love each other and share two amazing children together,” they wrote via Instagram at the time. “To safeguard our deep friendship and maintain a harmonious environment for our children we have made the mutual and difficult decision to take some time apart and reevaluate our relationship while we prioritize our children. We appreciate your love and support while we continue to do the work necessary throughout this journey.”
Dorit and PK met in 2011 and tied the knot in March 2015. During their relationship, they welcomed their two children, Jagger and Phoenix, in February 2014 and February 2016, respectively.

Split speculation began in October 2022 when Erika Jayne predicted that Dorit and PK would be the next Bravo couple to call it quits. However, both denied the allegation, which Erika later claimed was a joke.
“Misery loves company. What else can [I] say . Our friends, those that truly know us, know what we have and who we are,” Dorit responded in an Instagram comment at the time.
PK, for his part, questioned Erika’s knowledge on the matter. “Erika thought her husband was innocent,” he wrote via Instagram, referring to her ex Tom Girardi’s embezzlement lawsuit. “She thought the ankle is more important than the brain. She thought she should keep the earrings. Now she thinks Dorit and I are next to split up. Here’s a quick bit of management advice: Stop thinking!”
“We remain committed to working through these issues as a united couple for our family,” they said in a joint statement. “We have not separated nor are we planning to do so. Still, multiple sources confirmed to Us Weekly at the time that PK was living separately from Dorit as they attempted to save their marriage. “They both agree it’s the right thing to do,” an insider said. “It’s been a rough period for them. They want to stay on amicable terms whether they stay together or not.”
Dorit, meanwhile, assured Us in November 2023 that she and PK remained “hopeful” about their future together, adding that they were “working on the marriage.”
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez appear to be in a disagreement over the home they once shared while married.
“Jennifer thinks they can get more money for the home, so she wants to keep the price as is,” a source exclusively shares with Us Weekly. “But the real estate market is not there and it’s not selling.”
As for Affleck, 52, the insider says he is ready to sell regardless of what the final offer may be.
“Ben wants to get rid of it because their divorce is over and he wants to cut all ties and have it be done,” the source explains. “He just wants it over and to sell it. He wants to reduce the price.”
Lopez and Affleck’s shared Beverly Hills mansion was put on the market in July 2024 for $68 million. The former couple purchased the property for $60 million in June 2023 after tying the knot in July 2022.
At the time, a source said the pair originally thought they could sell it off-market, “but made a game-time decision in order to put more eyes on the property.”
“They are in a rush to sell it,” the source said. “Ben especially wants to be done with the house. He was never happy there. The house is incredibly huge at 38,000 square feet and Ben and Jen never felt settled at the house. They rarely have the kids full time, so it felt huge for the two of them.”
As the property stays on the market, the “On the Floor” singer and actor have been able to finalize their divorce, with a Los Angeles judge signing off on the documents in February.
When Lopez, 55, initially filed for divorce in August 2024 after two years of marriage, she cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the split.
Since then, Lopez reportedly purchased a new home near Los Angeles for about $18 million.
Although both parties have tried to keep the reasons behind their split private, Affleck recently cleared up some rumors about what led to their divorce.
In a March interview with GQ, the Oscar winner was asked about why he chose to be involved in Lopez’s 2024 documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told. The film was a companion piece to her 2024 visual album, This Is Me … Now, and included scenes where Affleck discussed their relationship.
“Part of it was, ‘OK, if I’m going to participate in this, I want to try to do it in an honest way and in a way that’s interesting,’” he explained. “Because I thought it was an interesting examination.”
Affleck went on to give Lopez credit for being someone who “handled celebrity more adeptly and more adroitly than I have.”
“My temperament is to be a little bit more reserved and private than hers,” he admitted. “As happens in relationships, you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things. And so I thought, ‘Oh, this is interesting because how do you reconcile that?’ Because … I love and support this person. I believe in them. They’re great. I want people to see that.”
Later in the interview, Affleck said it was “important to say” that there wasn’t “some major fracture” in his and Lopez’s marriage. In fact, he has “nothing but respect” for his ex today.

New England Patriots rookie Will Campbell went into the 2025 NFL Draft with his girlfriend, Ashlynn Nussmeier, in his corner — and she knows her football.
Campbell was drafted No. 4 in the April 2025 draft by the Patriots and Nussmeier was on hand to witness the big moment as was the offensive tackle’s family.
“She’s amazing,” Campbell exclusively told Us Weekly in April 2025 of his girlfriend, whom he met while playing at Louisiana State University. “She has a football background, so she knows what it takes, the sacrifices that have to be made. If she wasn’t as good with that type of stuff, I’m sure it would be a lot more difficult. But she’s a rock star.”
While Campbell is the one on the field, Nussmeier has become his No. 1 fan. Her knowledge of the game, however, was ingrained at a young age as her father, Doug Nussmeier, is a coach in the NFL. (Doug was the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles when they won Super Bowl LIX in February 2025 before becoming the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.)

The bible verse referenced states, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go,” seemingly referring to Campbell’s work ethic on and off the football field.

Campbell exclusively told Us that his relationship with Ashlynn has been “very easygoing” despite him no longer living in Baton Rouge. “[It’s] the same as it was whenever I was living [there],” he said of their dynamic.
That same month, Ashlynn made the trip to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and walked the red carpet with Campbell for the NFL Draft. After the Patriots selected him in the first round, Ashlynn showed support for her man on social media.
She reposted the Patriots, LSU and Campbell’s official draft announcement and added two clapping hands emojis via her Instagram Story.
Ashlynn’s brother Garrett Nussmeier — who is Campbell’s former teammate and the LSU quarterback — also sent his congratulations via a video call. “I’m so proud of you,” Garrett said. “They got a franchise player. They got a hall of famer.” Ashlynn reposted the cute video, adding a teary emoji and blue heart via her Instagram Story.
Toast of the town! The annual Met Gala has been the biggest night in fashion since the 1940s — and being a co-chair for the event has become a coveted title.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has housed the gala and the corresponding fashion exhibit since the early 1970s, but before that the Met Gala was held at a variety of New York City venues, including the Waldorf-Astoria, Central Park and the Rainbow Room.
The role of celebrity and socialite co-chairs dates back to 1973. That year, there were two events: one in March and one in December, with Phyllis Ellsworth Dillon helming the second bash (the theme was “The 10s, the 20s, the 30s: Inventive Clothes: 1909–1939.”)
Philanthropist Jane Engelhard was the co-chair of the “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design” event in 1974 and the “American Women of Style” fete in 1975, before Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis took on the role in both 1976.
It wasn’t until 1995 that Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, came on board as the chairperson for the Costume Institute. Since 1997, she has been a co-chair for every Met Gala held in New York City. In 2021, however, the fashion icon stepped back and took on the role of honorary co-chair for the first time.
“I was very honored when they first asked me to become involved [with the gala] because there was such a tradition of Vogue always supporting the Met,” Wintour told the Business of Fashion in April 2017. “I thought of it with great affection and connection [when I first started at the magazine] and I think obviously we have opened it up to maybe a larger world than the society world that it was when Mrs. [Diana] Vreeland was there. It was more society and fashion, and we broadened that.”
In the early 2000s, Nicole Kidman found herself among the first Hollywood A-listers asked to be a co-chair by Wintour. The honor has evolved over the decades that followed, with the 2021 list of co-chairs including actors, athletes, and designers.
Poet Amanda Gorman joined Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish and Naomi Osaka as co-chairs at the return of the gala in September 2021, as the 2020 event was canceled amid the COVID-19 pandemic. (The 2021 soiree was pushed to September as the virus continued to spread worldwide.)
“We really want people to have fun and enjoy dressing up again,” Wintour said during a Good Morning America appearance that month. “We also want to see a lot of independence and individuality. And a different kind of spirit, something that breaks the rules a bit.”
Ahead of the 2022 event, Wintour reminisced about the Met Gala and its legacy. “To me, what’s wonderful about the Met is that it’s such an incredible mix, and maybe there are some outlets to tend to the fantastical creations that you might see Monday night, but if you are a true fashion follower and you look at the carpet, you will see there is the most amazing mix,” she said during an April 2022 interview with the Washington Post. “In that mix, are truly exquisite, couture or ready-to-wear by wonderful designers. Not everything at all, by any means, is a chandelier or a teapot or whatever it may be.”
Beginning in 1978, socialite Pat Buckley co-chaired the Met Gala. She holds the title for most helming the most events in the gala’s history with 17 total. She was joined by Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass for her final Met Gala in 1994, “Orientalism: Visions of the East in Western dress.”
The “Haute Couture”-themed night marked the first Met Gala that Wintour co-chaired and hosted. She worked alongside Annette de la Renta and Clarissa Bronfman. Karl Lagerfeld and Gianni Versace were honorary co-chairs for the evening.
Wintour was back for the “Gianni Versace”-themed evening alongside Julia Koch and Patrick McCarthy. The magazine editor has since been a co-chair at every Met Gala.
Christina and Lindsay Owen-Jones, Annette and Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera were co-chairs when the gala returned after one year off in 2000. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of Jackie O. and John F. Kennedy, was, fittingly, an honorary co-chair alongside her husband, designer Edwin A. Schlossberg, for the event, which was centered around “Jaqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.”
There were no co-chairs for the “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century” event, but Jacob Rothschild and Jayne Wrightsman served as honorary chairs.
Sienna Miller and Christopher Bailey took the reigns for the “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion” them. Rose Marie Bravo and The Duke of Devonshire joined them as an honorary co-chair.
Cate Blanchett and Nicolas Ghesquière were co-chairs with François-Henri Pinault as the honorary guest as celebrities celebrated “Poiret: King of Fashion.”
Ocean’s Eleven costars George Clooney and Julia Roberts split the duties for “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.” Designer Giorgio Armani was the honorary co-chair.
Kate Moss and Justin Timberlake took the helm for “The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion” event with the help of designer Marc Jacobs in the honorary helper role.
Co-chairs Colin Firth and Stella McCartney were met by honorary co-chairs designer Pinault and Salma Hayek to embody the “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” theme.
Carey Mulligan co-chaired the “Schiparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” event alongside designer Prada. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was an honorary guest.
Wintour enlisted Rooney Mara, Lauren Santo Domingo and Riccardo Tisci as co-chairs, dubbing Beyoncé an honorary co-chair. The night toasted “Punk: Chaos to Couture.”
Jennifer Lawrence was joined by actress Gong Li, businesswoman Marissa Mayer and entrepreneur Wendi Murdoch while celebrating the fashions associated with “China: Through the Looking Glass.” Silas Chou was the honorary co-chair.
Taylor Swift and Idris Elba served alongside industrial and product designer Jonathan Ive when the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” even took over the Met. Designers Ghesquière, Lagerfeld and Prada were all on hand in an honorary capacity.
Gisele Bündchen and husband Tom Brady co-chaired the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”-themed night with Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams. Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo made the group complete as the bonus chair.
Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace joined forces to oversee the “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”-inspired fete. Christine and Stephen A. Schwarzman were there in an honorary capacity.

“In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”-themed night was held in September amid pushbacks during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Poet and activist Gorman stood alongside Chalamet, Eilish and Osaka as co-chairs. Wintour, for her part, stepped back as an honorary co-chair with Ford and Adam Mosseri.
Blake Lively and husband Ryan Reynolds were named co-chairs with Regina King and Miranda as the gala returned to its place on the first Monday in May. The “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” centered night also had Ford and Mosseri and Wintour as co-chairs.
In addition to Wintour, singer Lipa, actresses Coel and Cruz and tennis player Federer were announced as co-chairs for the 2023 gala. The event’s theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” served as a tribute to the late Chanel designer, who died in 2019 at the age of 85.
For 2024's "Garden of Time" dress code, the co-chairs were quite a varied but equally stylish group: Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth all joined Wintour in hosting the annual affair — and their red-carpet looks pushed the sartorial envelope in more ways than one. From Lopez’s sparkling Schiaparelli Haute Couture confection to Zendaya’s three wardrobe changes of the night, which include the ocean blue gown by Maison Margiela's John Galliano and headpiece, seen above.
The theme for the 2025 costume exhibit is “Tailored for You.” The evening's co-chairs bring together a diverse mix of luminaries from the world of fashion, the arts, music and sports: Louis Vuitton Men's Creative Director Pharrell Williams, rapper ASAP Rocky, actor-playwright Colman Domingo and Formula 1 racecar driver Lewis Hamilton, while LeBron James has been named honorary co-chair. Chosen to set the tone at the Oscars of fashion, naturally, every 2025 co-chair has consistently landed on all of the best-dressed lists from Met Balls of the past.
Long before ABC chose tocancel the reboot of Roseanne in 2018, the actress made headlines for a variety of reasons including a controversial National Anthem performance and a run for president.
Years after Barr’s Roseanne character was killed off The Conners, Us Weekly learned exclusive details about her private life in Texas, where she lives with her son Jake Pentland and his family.
In addition to working on “The Roseanne Barr” podcast, Barr spends her days spoiling her grandchildren, exploring the family’s large property and trying to stay out of trouble.
“We have 30 acres and live up in what they call ‘Hill Country,’” Pentland shared with Us in April 2025. “Roseanne also drives the tractor often, which allows her to mow the lawn. She drives around. She occasionally runs into trees, but just keeps the yard up.”
Regardless of where she calls home, Barr can’t help but make a few headlines for her actions and beliefs. Keeping reading as Us Weekly takes a look back at some of the star’s most shocking and controversial moments through the years.
The actress famously sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of a San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds game in July 1990 — and it was screechy, to say the least. She ended the performance by spitting and grabbing her crotch, mimicking the actions of some baseball players. Her rendition was widely criticized and even caught the attention of then-president George H.W. Bush, who called it “disgraceful.”
Barr, who is Jewish, posed as Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler in a July 2009 photo shoot for the satirical Jewish magazine Heeb. The theme was her idea and featured her wearing a faux mustache and a swastika armband while holding a tray of burnt gingerbread men cookies. Barr defended the photos in a 2011 episode of The Green Room With Paul Provenza, saying there was “another, deeper layer” to them.
The Emmy winner announced on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in August 2011 that she planned to run for president as a Green Party candidate in the 2012 election. She later switched over to the Peace and Freedom Party ticket and often used her platform to criticize her former Green Party rival Jill Stein. Barr ultimately finished in sixth place in the popular vote.
Barr tweeted the home address of George Zimmerman’s parents, Robert and Gladys Zimmerman, in March 2012 after George shot and killed unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin. The comedian added, “If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll [retweet] his address again. maybe go 2 his house myself.” Robert and Gladys sued Barr in March 2014, claiming they were forced to go into hiding for years because of the tweet. The lawsuit was dismissed in July 2015 because the address was considered to be public information.
The TV star spread a disproven conspiracy theory on Twitter that David Hogg, one of the survivors of the February 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, gave a Nazi salute at the gun control demonstration March for Our Lives. She later deleted the tweet.
Barr called Valerie Jarrett, an ex-adviser to former president Barack Obama, an offspring of “Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes” in a since-deleted tweet in May 2018. She later apologized and called the racist post a “joke [that] was in bad taste.” Hours later, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey announced that the reboot of Roseanne had been canceled, saying in a statement, “Roseanne’s Twitter is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values.”
The Roseanne alum raised some eyebrows in April 2019 when she started discussing the LGBTQ+ community in a YouTube video.
“All that LGBTQ stuff, I put the ‘Q’ in LGBTQ, OK?” she said. ‘Cause I am queer as two motherf***ers. I’m queer. I’m alien. I don’t belong here with all these people. They make no sense. They are very queer. And that makes me … a queer, I guess?”
According to GLAAD, “queer” is an adjective used by some people, particularly younger individuals, to describe their sexual orientation if it is not exclusively heterosexual.
In April 2020, the comedian shared a hot take on the coronavirus pandemic while appearing on Norm Macdonald’s YouTube series.
“I think they’re just trying to get rid of all my generation,” Barr speculated on Quarantined With Norm Macdonald. “The boomer ladies that, you know, that inherited their, you know, are widows. They inherited the money, so they got to go wherever the money is and figure out a way to get it from people.”
At the time of the podcast taping, COVID-19 had taken the lives of more than 73,000 people worldwide since December 2019, with cases reported in nearly every country.
Ever since Barr’s Roseanne character was killed off by an opioid overdose in a 2018 episode of The Conners, the actress has not been complimentary about the show.
“I AIN’T DEAD, BITCHES!!!!” she shared via X after the show premiered in October 2018.
Despite Barr’s exit from the show, The Conners had a successful seven-season run. When the series concluded in 2025, Barr claimed to have no idea.
“We don’t care about cheap knockoffs,” her son, Jake Pentland, told Us Weekly in April 2025. “We support the real brands. We only pay attention to things that matter to the American people.”

Before Bachelor Nation met Adams on season 23 of The Bachelor in 2019, she was married to her college sweetheart, Josh Bourelle.
“I actually married my first boyfriend, and I was with him for about six years or so. I guess I could, kind of, sense we weren’t doing very well,” Adams told Colton Underwood on the ABC show. “And I think that’s why I fought so hard just to try to do as much as I possibly could [to save the marriage].”
“Her going out and saying that I cheated on her and that was the reason for our divorce on national TV, I felt like, kind of crossed the line a little bit,” Bourelle said on the “Reality Steve Podcast” in December 2020. “I feel like she was using that as her sob story to make her look better. It was hurtful to me. We’re humans. She made just as many mistakes — maybe even more mistakes than I did over the course of our relationship.”
After her stint on The Bachelor, Adams appeared on Bachelor in Paradise before she was named the season 16 Bachelorette — taking over for Clare Crawley after she thought she found The One in Dale Moss within the first two weeks of production in 2020.
“Him and I both know the truth and where we stand, and I’ve actually never said anything in the media about our relationship except for [that] we’re no longer together,” Adams told Us Weekly in December 2022. “And I know people might think otherwise, but that’s literally the only statement we’ve ever given out. I think that’s just something about maturity and how we decided to proceed and yeah, at the end of the day, no one else needs to know anything else.”
Adams added at the time that she wasn’t sure she was ready to be in another public relationship.
“I think that’s another lesson I’ve learned is I really wanna protect that in the future, and kind of, maybe, keep it quiet and under wraps for a minute and then maybe let the people in on the news after a little while,” she said. “People are private investigators. I don’t even know how they figure out half the things they do now.”
The former couple split in October 2017 after less than two years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in April 2018. Adams explained in January 2019 why she was hesitant to open up about her divorce on the Bachelor.
“My divorce used to be something I was ashamed of,” she wrote via Instagram. “Because to me it represented, not only to myself but to everyone that knew me, that I had failed at marriage, something I value so highly. It made me question my worth and completely dimmed the light inside of me that used to shine so brightly.”
Adams began dating the model in November 2017 after meeting at a bar in their hometown of Newport Beach, California. Us broke the news in February 2019 that Adams was dating Olswang right before she left to film Underwood's season in September 2018.
“I moved some things around … before she ended up deciding to leave [for The Bachelor], because she still wasn’t really sure if she was going to go on the show or not,” Olswang told Us at the time. “She was still back and forth … she wasn’t sure. As it got closer, I could kind of see changes between us and I could kind of tell that she was leaning toward going. I don’t know all of the exact reasons for that. … There is an open line of communication. We’re there for each other if we need to be, but things have changed quite a bit since she’s come back.”
Underwood sent Adams home after the fantasy suite dates during season 23 of The Bachelor in 2019. She revealed during the show that she thought The First Time author was a bad kisser. “Yeah, not gonna lie. But he got better by the end of the season! I think I’m a good teacher,” she said at the time.
The Indiana native referenced her criticism when he congratulated her on becoming the Bachelorette. “Congrats @TayshiaAdams — good luck and I hope you find yourself a better kisser 😉," he tweeted in August 2020.
Adams found herself in a love triangle between Peth and Jones during season 6 of Bachelor in Paradise in 2019. Things heated up between Peth and Adams after Demi Burnett broke up with the banker to be with Kristian Haggerty. However, Adams ended her fling with Peth later in the show.

The pair called it quits before the finale, but reunited on the After the Final Rose episode after she flew to his home state of Maryland to win him back. Although Jones moved to California to be closer to her, they split again in October 2019.
Jones told Us in August 2020 that he's "happy" Adams is the new Bachelorette. “I’m really happy and excited for her on this new journey,” he said at the time. “I hope she finds the love and happiness that she deserves.”
During Adams’ stint as the season 16 Bachelorette, she developed strong feelings for her final four: Zac Clark, Ben Smith, Ivan Hall and Brendan Morais. In the end, however, Clark won her heart and proposed during the December 2020 finale.
“It’s this wild, wild love that I have tried to come up with so many reasons to not believe, and you have truly just made me believe there doesn’t need to be flaws, and that I deserve a love with a man that won’t run away,” she gushed ahead of the proposal. “You’ve truly woken up my heart, and yes, it is real. I feel it too.”
Zac replied, “If you’ll let me, I’m going to choose you right now. I’m going to choose you tomorrow morning. I’m going to choose you next week and next year. I’m going to choose you forever, because I love you.”
In November 2021, the duo called it quits nearly one year after their engagement aired. “Tayshia Adams and Zac Clark are no longer a couple,” a representative told Us at the time.
Adams sparked dating speculation with the Summer House alum in early 2023. That April, his former costar Lindsay Hubbard shared — and deleted — a pic of the pair holding hands at an Easter celebration. When asked about removing the photo, Hubbard confirmed they were dating but trying to keep things quiet.
“I understand what it’s like to be in the public and the pressure that you feel from viewers and fans [and] everywhere,” she said on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that month.
In April 2025, Us Weekly exclusively confirmed that Adams and Gulbranson split after two years of dating.
