When it comes to his bandmate Brian Littrell’s son, Baylee, and his musical career, AJ McLean says the aspiring artist doesn’t need anyone’s advice.
“I mean, I’ve known Baylee since he was born,” McLean, 47, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting Netflix’s Building the Band. “I’ve known him for 22 years of his life on this beautiful planet. He doesn’t really need any advice from any of us. If anything, I’m such a big fan.”
Baylee delighted Backstreet Boys fans when he joined the latest season of American Idol, singing both original songs and renditions of his famous father’s work. (He was one of six contestants ultimately not selected to proceed to the singing competition’s top 14 round.)
Before his elimination, Baylee sang the song “Gone Without Goodbye” from his father’s 2006 solo album, Welcome Home.
“It means a great deal to us,” the younger singer told host Ryan Seacreast at the time. “That song is really dedicated to [the] tragedy [of] 9/11, you know, all the victims that it affected.”
Baylee went on to explain that his mother, Leighanne, was “supposed to be on the second flight” that struck the World Trade Center in September 2001.
“I feel incredibly lucky,” he continued. “It’s an emotional song. I’m just glad I got through it.”
McLean — who sang alongside Brian, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough in the beloved early aughts band — told Us that he is “always going to root” for Baylee as he takes his next, post-American Idol steps.
“Last time I was in Georgia, I was in the studio with T-Pain working on my solo project and I went to Brian’s house just to kind of kick it, and Baylee sat there and played 15 songs, all different types of music,” he continued. “I mean, he’s got a catalog of probably three to 400 songs he’s written that are all insanely good. He knows what he wants and he knows what’s right and wrong. He’s seen his dad go through it; his uncles go through it. He’s seen a lot in 22 years, but he’s in his own lane and in my mind he’s already a massive success because he is his own person.”
In an exclusive interview with Us following his elimination, Baylee opened up about his time on Idol and how difficult it was to compete as a famous Backstreet Boys’ son.
“It was hard to make friends, and it was hard for people to understand me because a lot of people, they did have preconceived notions of how I would be,” he explained at the time. “And that’s one of the emotional parts of leaving — finally people get to see who you are. And finally we kind of set our differences aside or our assumptions of each other and all just started to bond.”
Despite the challenges, Baylee told Us he had “a great experience” on the show. And if his uncle McLean has anything to say about it, his time on the reality competition series will hardly be the last time we see the future star.
“He can sing and do anything, honestly,” McLean told Us. “I mean, he’s just beyond talented.”
Lena Dunhamis getting real about her decision to step back from pursuing acting roles.
“Having my body dissected was a reason that I chose in general to step back from acting a little bit more and focus on my writing and my directing,” Dunham, 39, told The Independent in a profile published on Saturday, July 5. “And also just make different kinds of choices as an actor.”
Dunham created and starred on HBO’s Girls from 2012 to 2017, at a time when her body and overall physical appearance were heavily criticized. Despite the backlash, Dunham always remained a fierce body-positive advocate.
“I always shudder to make big statements, but I have to say, the past two years haven’t just been the happiest years of my adult life, they’ve been the happiest years of my life,” Dunham exclusively told Us Weekly in November 2019. “And that’s not because they’ve been perfect. It’s because I now have the tools based on what I’ve been through — whether it’s losing my health or ending a long relationship, or, you know, challenges with addiction.”
According to Dunham, managing her various challenges made her stronger in the long run.
“Learning that they don’t define me and that I actually have the tools to live a life of relative freedom has made me so much more confident, grounded, present,” she told Us. “It’s not that issues don’t come up, it’s that I have the tools to manage those issues, and that’s really what I wish for every woman. The reason I’ve been so insistent on sharing my experiences, I think, [is that] we have to be reminded again and again and again that we’re not alone.”
Dunham recently used her entire life as inspiration for Netflix’s Too Much, which is loosely based on her early courtship with husband Luis Felber. In addition to writing the scripts, Dunham was initially attached to star in the project.
“I was not willing to have another experience like what I’d experienced around Girls at this point in my life,” she wrote in a New Yorker essay published in July 2024. “Physically, I was just not up for having my body dissected again. It was a hard choice.”
“Megan is so smart and so internet-literate,” Dunham told The Independent, speculating how the 34-year-old star would handle potential body-shaming criticism when Too Much hits Netflix. “I don’t use Instagram — I write the captions, but somebody else posts them — so I’m not receiving all this online feedback. She’s so culturally alert and online that I feel like she knows what the world is offering. And what I love about her is she has such a funny, bright, ballsy way of taking it all in stride.”

Jenna Johnson is speaking out after a social media user sent her a hurtful message about her 2-year-old son, Rome.
On Friday, July 4, the Dancing With the Stars pro, 31, shared a photo of herself via Instagram Stories snuggling up with Rome, who was drinking from a bottle. Apparently, another mom didn’t think a 2-year-old should still be using a bottle and decided to share her thoughts with Johnson.
“Way too old for this fat r****d to have a bottle,” the social media user wrote via DM.
Johnson shared a screenshot of the individual’s message via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, July 5, alongside a note about bullying online.
“Soooo yesterday I posted a pic of me and my son, who I hadn’t seen in 4 days and lots of people felt strongly about him drinking from a bottle,” she began. “Totally fine when other moms give *positive* advice and I’m always open to feedback to an extent. But this woman (who’s profile pic is of her holding her own baby) decided to DM me this. What world are we living in?? I understand that I put my life out there publicly, which I honestly want to STOP doing when extremely rude and harmful messages toward my baby are sent to me. But are we OK as a society? Also, you yourself are a MOM!!!! Would you want me, a total stranger, to DM you this about your child? Because he’s drinking from a bottle??? Like WHAT ON EARTH IS HAPPENING.”
She concluded, “I love my social media community on here and really feel so connected to each of you. But enough is enough with the sad trolls/bullies on here. Please unfollow me IMMEDIATELY and respectfully get a life.”

On Sunday, July 6, Johnson thanked her followers for sharing supportive messages amid the controversy.
“I honestly cried reading ALL your messages,” she wrote via Instagram Stories. My heart really hurt yesterday at how vile and mean some people can be, but once again I was shown just how much this little community of mine on here can also show up. You gave me the love, support, and kindness that I believe in!”
She continued, “Let’s remember that we are all humans, navigating life the best we can! I promise to try and only spread positivity and light on my feed and I hope you feel inspired to do the same. But seriously, thank you for having my back and making me feel seen. So grateful to each of you!!”
Johnson shares Rome with her husband and fellow DWTS pro, Val Chmerkovskiy. The pair got married in April 2019 and welcomed Rome in January 2023.
“Our world is forever changed 1.10.2023,” the dancers jointly captioned the first photo of their baby boy.
Johnson has been open about her infertility journey, sharing a heartfelt message while announcing her pregnancy in 2022.
“We had actually stopped trying to conceive for about 6 months to mentally/emotionally give ourselves a break,” Johnson wrote in the Instagram caption. “So the shock, disbelief, and sheer joy in this moment is a memory I will never forget ”
She also shared a short clip of herself getting her first ultrasound, explaining, “Our journey getting to this point wasn’t an easy one.”
Johnson also commended her sister-in-law, Peta Murgatroyd, for sharing her own experience after suffering multiple miscarriages.
“As a family [we’ve] obviously known about this and her struggles with it,” Johnson exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2022. “She’s kept it very private for the past two years. So when I saw the beautiful piece that they did and that she finally opened up, I just called her and told her how proud I am of her, because I know how much heartbreak that brought her and how badly she wants another baby.”
Murgatoryd is married to Val’s brother, Maksim Chmerkovsiky, and they share three sons, Shai, 8, Rio, 2, and Milan, 11 months.
“When I think back to the pain, the angst, the anger of not being able to keep a baby … It’s funny, I could get pregnant very easily but I kept losing the babies and it was a tragic circumstance because I really thought that I was going to be having one child for the rest of my life and I had to be OK with that,” Murgatoryd, 38, told Us Weekly in June. “And now that I do have three and it is utter chaos, Maks and I have to find time to be together and we’ve really had to sit down and say, ‘I miss you.’ [And], ‘I miss you too.’ Let’s really just connect and make sure that we’re seeing each other properly, communicating properly and making sure we’re really trying to carve out time for each other.’”
Ozzy Osbourne had the support of his entire family for his final Black Sabbath concert — and daughter Kelly Osbourne knows how special it was.
“I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you,” Kelly, 40, said in a Sunday, July 6, Instagram Story video. “Thank you to everyone who came to the show last night, [and] thank you to everybody who was involved in the show last night. You have no idea what it did for my dad.”
She added, “It was one of the most magical experiences of my entire life, and if I keep talking, I’m probably going to end up crying again. So, that’s all I’ll say for now. Thank you.”
Ozzy, 76, reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates for an epic “Back to the Beginning” concert in Birmingham, England, on Saturday, July 6, to raise funds for Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns Children’s Hospice. The concert also marked the famed rocker’s official retirement.
Ozzy announced in 2020 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
“You wake up the next morning and find that something else has gone wrong. You begin to think this is never going to end,” Ozzy told The Guardian in a May profile, noting that his wife, Sharon Osbourne, organized the benefit concert to “give [him] a reason to get up in the morning.”
Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic
At the time, Ozzy teased that he was working on his stamina in order to make it through the performance.
“I do weights [and] bike riding, I’ve got a guy living at my house who’s working with me,” Ozzy told the British newspaper. “It’s tough. I’ve been laid up for such a long time. I’ve been lying on my back doing nothing, and the first thing to go is your strength. It’s, like, starting all over again.”
He continued, “I have problems walking. I also get blood pressure issues from blood clots on my legs. I’m used to doing two hours on stage, jumping and running around. I don’t think I’ll be doing much jumping or running around this time. I may be sitting down.”
Ozzy ended up seated during most of Saturday’s show, performing from a bat-covered throne. Kelly watched from backstage alongside her mom, siblings and other loved ones.
Ozzy and Sharon, 72, are parents to Kelly, Jack and Aimee.

Garfield, 41, and Barbaro, 35, arrived holding hands at London’s All England Tennis and Croquet Club on Sunday, July 6. The actors twinned in all-white Ralph Lauren outfits. While Barbaro stunned in a sleeveless sundress, Garfield opted for a button-down with matching trousers and a sweater tied around his shoulders.
Inside the arena, Garfield and Barbaro were spotted laughing as they took in the tennis match. They were seated in a star-studded box, surrounded by fellow celebrities Charithra Chandran, Maude Apatow, Erin Doherty and Wafaa Ashur.
Neither Garfield nor Barbaro has publicly addressed their relationship status, though speculation has swirled since March that the pair have been dating. (Us Weekly reached out to Garfield and Barbaro’s reps for comment at the time.)
Garfield and the A Complete Unknown actressrecently stepped out together across the pond in New York City in May, where they saw the Tony-nominated play John Proctor Is the Villain ahead of her solo outing at the Met Gala. Garfield, however, was seen waiting for Barbaro when she returned to The Mark Hotel afterward.
The English actor, for his part, often keeps his romantic life out of the limelight.
“How many of those relationships work out?” Garfield said on an October 2024 episode of Chicken Shop Date. “I mean, it’s, like, flash-in-the-pan stuff, usually.”
Garfield has previously been linked to Shannon Woodward, Susie Abromeit, Aisling Bea, Rita Ora and Alyssa Miller throughout his career. He also famously dated Emma Stone from 2011 to 2015 after they met on the set of 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

“We care about each other so much, and that’s a given, that’s kind of this unconditional thing,” Garfield told Vanity Fair in January 2017 of his past with Stone, now 36. “There’s so much love between us and so much respect. … I’m her biggest fan as an artist. So for me, it’s been bliss to be able to watch her success and watch her bloom into the actress that she is.”
He still remains on good terms with Stone, who is now married to Dave McCary.
As for Barbaro, she has also kept her past relationships out of the spotlight. While she doesn’t speak about her relationships often, she does find friendships equally important to prioritize. Earlier this year, Barbaro spoke about bonding with her A Complete Unknown costars.
“He’s just starting with us because he’s been filming, but we are having these beautiful moments of chatting and catching up,” Barbaro told Cosmopolitan in January, referring to Timothée Chalamet. “In this stretch where he’s been working, I’ve been doing a lot of press with Elle [Fanning], and we sort of laugh about how we don’t have any scenes together. We share one look, and she’s so brilliant. I’m so glad I’ve gotten to hang out with her in this space. Everyone’s wonderful.”
She added, “This was a more or less siloed one for us in our training, as opposed to something like Top Gun: Maverick, where we were in planes together, trauma-bonding together with all of our fears and excitement and all the risks we were taking. But this was really cool too, because we could just show up and do our jobs and be these proficient musicians who wouldn’t have met until they were in a performance space.”

Ransom Canyon has finally been renewed for season 2 — and there have already been teases about possible love triangle outcomes, spinoff plans and more.
Based on Jodi Thomas‘ book series of the same name, Ransom Canyon introduced Us to a town full of drama, romance and hope. The first season kicked off with stoic rancher Staten (Josh Duhamel) grieving two major losses while navigating an undeniable connection to childhood friend Quinn (Minka Kelly), who has also caught the eye of Staten’s brother-in-law and rival Davis (Eoin Macken).
There was also newcomer Yancy (Jack Schumacher), who had a past he was hiding from Ellie (Marianly Tejada). And if that wasn’t enough, viewers found themselves invested in another love triangle between high school students Lucas (Garrett Wareing), Lauren (Lizzy Greene) and Reid (Andrew Liner).
While the first season, which premiered in April 2025, answered some questions, there were plenty of new ones following a shocking death — and the revelation that one of the residents of Texas Hill Country had a secret spouse.
Netflix kept Us guessing about the show’s future until its renewal in June 2025. Keep scrolling for everything to know so far about season 2 of Ransom Canyon:
Netflix renewed Ransom Canyon in June 2025 for presumably 10 more episodes. The first season filmed in early 2024 before rolling out one year later. Based on that schedule, the earliest season 2 would premiere is in 2026.
Which Cast Members Are Coming Back?
Netflix
Duhamel, Kelly, Macken, Greene, Wareing, Schumacher, Tejada and Liner are all expected to return. Brett Cullen, Jaren Robledo, Justin Johnson Cortez and Casey W. Johnson will likely reprise their roles as well.
The only actor who definitely isn’t coming back? James Brolin, whose character was killed off by the end of season 1.
Will There Be Newcomers?
Josh Duhamel as Staten in ‘Ransom Canyon.’Anna Kooris/Netflix
Ransom Canyon found fun ways to feature A-list cameos, including Kelly’s boyfriend, Dan Reynolds, and Duhamel’s wife, Audra Mari, whose scene was cut. There were also flashbacks with Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s daughter, Ava, playing one of the key roles.
During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in April 2025, Wareing weighed in on how we have yet to meet Lucas’ dad.
“I would love Josh Lucas to join our cast,” Wareing mentioned before signing off on Us‘ pitch for James’ son, Josh Brolin, to play the Russell patriarch. “Honestly, I love that idea and I’ll take it.”
Where Did the Story Leave Off in Season 1?
Netflix
When we were last in Ransom Canyon, Ellie was getting ready to get married to Yancy before his wife (played by Erica Dasher of Jane by Design fame) showed up. Staten, meanwhile, had a brief moment of happiness with Quinn before his argument with Davis left their future unclear. It didn’t help that Quinn was getting ready to go to New York City for an undetermined amount of time.
Lucas and Lauren, meanwhile, ended the season as a couple. But it feels important to note that Reid is still interested in Lauren, who has yet to tell Lucas that her mother was at fault for his brother’s arrest.
What Is the Plan for Season 2?
Netflix
“We’ve already started the writers room, even though the show hasn’t been picked up to series yet for season 2,” creator April Blair told TV Insider in April about their plans for season 2. “Quinn’s going to go off to New York and come back. How is [Staten] going to win her back if he’s still haunted? I don’t feel like he could ever truly move on in his heart and his mind until that mystery [about his son’s death] was settled.”
Blair confirmed that the revelations in the finale will affect the direction of a potential season 2. “We wanted to find some closure with that, and also, who was behind it and what really happened opens up a whole new series of relationship drama between Lucas and Lauren,” Blair said. “So it gives us a lot of runway in other stories as well.”
How Will the Characters Address the Revelations From Season 1?
Netflix
During the first season, Staten learned that Lauren’s mom — who is also the sheriff’s (Philip Winchester) wife — was the one driving when his teen son, Randall (Hubert Smielecki), died in a hit-and-run. Lucas’ brother, Kit (Johnson), helped cover the crime up because of his affair with Margaret (Sarah Minnich).
“In a potential season 2, I think it’s a huge part of what’s going on. We’re still just in the room, so I don’t have every aspect to tell you. Westerns are morality tales, and so every aspect of this show, we always try to come from that foundation of love, lands and legacy, and what that really means,” Blair told TV Insider. “For Sheriff Dan, this is his legacy and his family and the people that he loves. He has this moral choice. Does he do the right thing by his family and the wrong thing by his profession? That’s his morality moment, so we try to do that with everyone, but that’s the thing he’s grappling with, and he painfully chooses to do the right thing.”
Are There Plans for Spinoffs?
Minka Kelly as Quinn, Josh Duhamel as Staten, Lizzy Greene as Lauren and Garrett Wareing as Lucas in Ransom Canyon.Anna Kooris/Netflix(2)
“That could be a whole spinoff of its own, the OG love triangle of Ransom Canyon,” Blair hinted about Staten’s romance with his late wife (played by Ava Phillippe in flashbacks). “We would love for her to come back. She was amazing. I literally had a cameraman on set who came up and was like, ‘That girl looks exactly like Reese Witherspoon.’ I was like, ‘Funny you should say that.'”
Staten and Quinn’s teen years were introduced for a reason.
“We cast that character with a lot of care, even though it was for this little bit, but we just wanted to be prepared and to be able to use it more in future seasons, or as its own show, potentially,” she continued. “I just thought it was fun, and also just what Ava brings to it is very much A-type, bossy. It just made it easier to communicate who that character was, and because Amalah looms larger than life in everyone’s world, and they’re always talking about her, that when we finally saw her face, we wanted it to be someone that was exciting.”
Should Fans Expect a Time Jump?
ANNA KOORIS/Netflix
“We would need to because I don’t want to do anything in New York,” Blair shared. “Quinn needs to go away and save her ranch, and we need to see what the implications are for that punch that Davis goads Staten into doing and what that plot between Davis and Staten’s father, the senator, is like.”
She concluded: “I think we would probably do that because she says, ‘I’m going to go away for six months.’ So the idea right now, although nothing’s set in stone, is that we would do at least a six-month time jump.”
While Reid and Lucas — and Lauren — ended season 1 on good terms, it might not be that way for long.
“He should have never gone against his family. He was trying to do the right thing and he’s figuring out what is right for him. He’s constantly in this battle of what is good,” Liner explained to Us, referring to Reid going against his dad. “I think that the most interesting stuff is going to be with his dad, with his mom and figuring out that world. Because we don’t get to see much of it in season 1 — even though it’s discussed a lot and we get to see glimpses. I am very fascinated with that.”
Where Is the Reid, Lauren and Lucas Love Triangle Heading?
Garrett Wareing, Andrew Liner and Lizzy Greene.Netflix (3)
Greene teased to Us that nothing is off the table when it comes to potential onscreen romances.
“Things are set up where everyone is in a love triangle in season 1 because it opens the door for the audience to say what they like,” she noted. “Then also hopefully we get another season. It gives our writers and everyone an opportunity to see what people like and then lean into it more season 2.”
“There is still a lot of love there and a lot of care for each other. That is kind of where everyone sits [because] there’s no animosity toward anybody. Everyone loves and cares about everyone,” she shared. “That’s why it ends up so well is because while they are butting heads in the beginning, they both really admire each other.”
Wareing, meanwhile, is just like Us as he showed his support for Lucas and Lauren, adding, “We saw Lucas and Lauren very happy in season 1. What does it look like when we don’t see them happy and when we are facing real world hardship? And what does it look like to feel that pull and come back together?”
He continued: “Lucas is looking to explore [life outside of Ransom Canyon] but is it worth exploring without the love of his life? That’s a question that we’re going to have to answer in season 2 — if we’re lucky. Lucas loves Lauren so much that his dream wouldn’t be complete without her.”

Jennette McCurdy‘s troubled relationship with her now-late mother serves as the inspiration for an upcoming show — but what is there to know aside from Jennifer Aniston’s casting?
Jennette got her start as a child star in Nickelodeon’s iCarly, Sam & Cat, Zoey 101, True Jackson, VP and Victorious. She briefly transitioned to music and more adult roles before quitting acting altogether to pursue a career in writing and directing.
In 2022, Jennette released a memoir titled I’m Glad My Mom Died, which quickly became a bestseller for its candid depiction of Jennette’s childhood, which involved abusive behavior from her since-deceased mother.
“It’s something I mean sincerely,” Jennette told BuzzFeed News in August 2022 about the title of her book. “I’m genuinely glad. If she were alive, I’d still be trapped. Every important decision in my life wouldn’t have been possible.”
I’m Glad My Mom Died will also be adapted into a TV show of the same name. Keep scrolling for everything to know about the upcoming Apple TV+ series:

What Is the Show About?
Based on the synopsis, I’m Glad My Mom Died is “a heartbreaking and hilarious recounting of McCurdy’s struggles as a former child actor while dealing with her overbearing, domineering mother.” The dramedy will “center on the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress in a hit kid’s show, and her narcissistic mother who relishes in her identity as ‘a starlet’s mother.’”

Aniston is the only confirmed cast member, with I’m Glad My Mom Diedmarking her second lead role in a TV show since Friends came to an end in 2004. (Aniston also stars on Apple TV+’s hit series The Morning Show.) She will play Jennette’s mother onscreen.
What Has Jennette Said About Her Complicated Relationship With Her Late Mother?
“I’ve been so touched by how much the emotional thrust of the story has connected with people, which I see as being my relationship with my mom,” Jennette said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter after the book was released in 2022. “That’s an important and complicated relational dynamic to explore, and to see that people are responding to it has been amazing. And to see people responding to the humor of it and the aspect of exploring eating disorders and complicated grief, it’s really been incredible.”

Matthew McConaughey. Heath Ledger. Tom Hanks. Hugh Grant. You’d be hard-pressed to find an A-list actor in the ’80s, ’90s or early aughts who didn’t dip his toe in the rom-com pool. Films like You’ve Got Mail, Notting Hill and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days dominated the film landscape, garnering box office success, critical acclaim and guaranteed “It Boy” status for anyone playing the complicated and/or misunderstood knight in shining armor.
But the 2010s brought about a major drought for the genre. Raunchy sex comedies — No Strings Attached and Bad Teacher, for example — replaced earnest romance, love stories that were once celebrated became a premise for parody and just the whisper of the term “rom-com” had the most serious actors running for the hills.
There were, of course, a few breakaway hits, like Emma Stone’s 2010 female-forward Easy A, or 2011’s Crazy, Stupid, Love (featuringRyan Gosling’scrazy, stupid abs). But mostly, the landscape was dotted with low-budget attempts that were DOA.
It wasn’t until 2018 that a new romantic hero emerged.Glen Powelldefied the odds with a breakthrough performance in the criminally underrated Netflix rom-com Set It Up opposite Zoey Deutch. Five years later, he remained loyal to his roots with 2023’s box office juggernaut Anyone But You. The movie, loosely based on Much Ado About Nothing, surpassed Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo + Juliet as the highest-grossing Shakespeare adaptation of all time (take that, Leo!). That same year, Powell had Hit Man, which — despite its lack of a nationwide theatrical run — earned him Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice nominations. Two months later, he delivered yet another blockbuster romance with Twisters.
When it comes to the secret sauce of rom-com success, the actor has said that two things are necessary: fun and chemistry. Powell, of course, is one of those amalgamations who seems to create fireworks with all his leading ladies — Sydney Sweeney, Adria Arjona and Daisy Edgar-Jones, to name a few — but also understands the impact a well-executed romantic comedy can have on pop culture at large. Now other actors are following suit, once again dying to sink their teeth into these once-avoided roles.
When Renée Zellweger returned as Bridget Jones in last year’s Mad About the Boy, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall — two of today’s most in-demand actors — played her love interests. This summer, Pedro Pascaland Chris Evans fight for Dakota Johnson’s heart in Celine Song’s latest venture, Materialists, centered on a complicated love triangle that has spawned endless online conversations.
Younger rising stars also want in on the romantic action. Tom Blyth said he was “actively looking and reading a lot of rom-com scripts” just months before being cast as the lead in the adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestseller People We Meet on Vacation. And Dylan O’Brien confessed that he’d love to be part of a rom-com after growing up in an age where studios “put money” into the genre. “And then I also watched them go extinct, so to see them start to come back, it’s great,” he said while teasing the possibility of starring in another one of Henry’s upcoming films.
So who do we thank for the rom-com resurgence? Kate Hudson said during a 2024 appearance on The View that sparking interest is about “investing” in the right story, so perhaps Hollywood was listening. Others (like me) may credit Powell and Gosling for sticking by the genre despite its years of unpopularity, or the increase in book-to-screen adaptations that have a guaranteed built-in audience and ready-made source material. Perhaps life has become so hard, sweet escapism is what we crave most these days.
It doesn’t really matter why it’s happening — it’s just good news that it’s happening! Whoever you are, love remains a universal experience. It meets us where we are. Whether that’s healing from heartbreak, navigating our first real romance or finding the courage to try again, there is a rom-com for every person’s story. And that is something worth being a part of.
