Former Chicago White Sox pitcher and 2005 World Series champion Bobby Jenks died from cancer at age 44 on July 4.
Major League Baseball confirmed that Jenks passed away in Sintra, Portugal, where he was undergoing treatment for an advanced form of adenocarcinoma, a type of stomach cancer. He is survived by his second wife, Eleni Tzitzivacos, and their children, Zeno and Kate, as well as four children — Cuma, Nolan, Rylan and Jackson — from his previous marriage to Adele Romkee.
“Former Chicago White Sox All-Star pitcher and 2005 World Series Champion Bobby Jenks passed away yesterday, July 4, in Sintra, Portugal, where he had been battling adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. He was 44 years old,” the White Sox confirmed via X on Saturday, July 4.
White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf also mourned the loss of “an iconic member of the White Sox family.”
11 Shocking Celebrity Deaths and In Memoriam Tributes
“None of us will ever forget that ninth inning of Game 4 in Houston, all that Bobby did for the 2005 World Series champions and for the entire Sox organization during his time in Chicago,” Reinsdorf, 89, added. “He and his family knew cancer would be his toughest battle, and he will be missed as a husband, father, friend, and teammate. He will forever hold a special place in all our hearts.”
Jenks helped end the White Sox’ 88-year World Series championship drought by delivering a scoreless ninth ending against the Houston Astros in Game Four in 2005. (Prior to their World Series win in 2005, the White Sox had not won the league’s championship since 1917.)
Former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen referred to Jenks as “one of [his] all-time favorite players” following the announcement of the pitcher’s death.
“I loved that man,” Guillen said. “This is a very sad day for everyone involved with the White Sox. Everyone remembers the moment when I called for the big fella in the World Series, so the bobblehead of that moment will be a great way to keep that moment alive for White Sox fans.”
The former White Sox manager went on, “Everyone has a favorite story about Bobby, so the 2005 reunion [from July 11-13] will be a great opportunity to get together with all his teammates and coaches and relive some of our greatest memories of him.”
Jenks’ historic MLB career included holding the league’s record for retiring consecutive batters, at 41, and he was also a two-time All-Star. He pitched for the White Sox from 2005 to 2010 and then finished out his career with the Boston Red Sox in 2011.
He later worked as pitching coach and general manager for the Grand Junction Rockies, as part of MLB’s Pioneer developmental league. He coached for the Princeton WhistlePigs and the Windy City ThunderBolts as well.
Jenks announced his stomach cancer diagnosis in February during an interview with MLB.com from his hospital bed in Portugal. He confirmed that doctors discovered a tumor in his chest after a CT scan, with cancer ultimately spreading to his stomach lining, lower back, hips and bones.
“Now it’s time to do what I got to do to get myself better and get myself more time, however you want to look at it,” Jenks said at the time. “I’ll tell you one thing: I’m not going to die here in Portugal.”
Most Shocking Celebrity Deaths of All Time
He continued, “They are not going to put any numbers on it. I wouldn’t even want numbers. You hear stories all the time, ‘Oh, they gave me six months, 25 years ago.’ I don’t buy into that. Whatever happens is going to happen regardless.”
Jenks and his family’s difficulties were compounded when their Pacific Palisades, California home was lost in the Palisades Fire in January. Jenks managed to save his World Series but lost all other memorabilia from his career.
“I’ve got one suitcase left to my name,” Jenks admitted. “It’s all gone. Everything else I’ve ever done. I have everything, first to first. All those things are irreplaceable.”

Julian McMahon and Shannen Doherty briefly dated during the making of their classic TV series Charmed.
Tragically, the Charmed costars died within one year of each other after they both battled cancer. Doherty passed away at 53 in July 2024, while McMahon’s death was confirmed nearly one year later on July 4, 2025. The actor was 56.
The former couple reportedly got together during Charmed’s third season in 2001, which turned out to be Doherty’s last playing Prue Halliwell. At the time, Doherty’s departure – and the on-screen death of her character – were blamed partially on off-screen tension with costar Alyssa Milano, who played Prue’s sister, Phoebe Halliwell. (Rose McGowan was eventually cast as a long lost Halliwell sister, Paige, to essentially replace Doherty’s Prue.)
Doherty and McMahon’s dating situation during Charmed season 3 may have been especially complicated since McMahon played Milano’s on-screen love interest, Cole Turner. McMahon was also going through a divorce from first wife, Baywatch star Brooke Burns, at the time.
Charmed’s Finola Hughes Remembers ‘Warrior’ Shannen Doherty: ‘She Fought’
Doherty addressed the tense Charmed set environment during a December 2023 interview with former costar Holly Marie Combs on her “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty” podcast. Combs briefly acknowledged Doherty and McMahon’s relationship as she discussed the events that led up to Doherty being dropped from Charmed in 2001.
“You know, [Brian Krause, who played Leo] and [Alyssa] were dating at the time when this all went down, which, to me, us being completely oblivious, to me was the worst part,” Combs said. “Where, it was all sort of part of this plan that was happening and unfolding through over months. It was months of that year. You were dating Julian [McMahon]. So you guys were off in that world. Brian was off with Alyssa.”
Away from the Charmed set, Doherty and McMahon played lovers in the 2001 TV movie Another Day. In the film, Doherty’s character Kate developed feelings for childhood friend David (McMahon) after mysteriously being sent back in time to two days before her late boyfriend Paul’s death in a fire.
McMahon and Doherty were reportedly already split up by the time Another Day premiered. Having previously been married to actor Ashley Hamilton in the 1990s, Doherty wed poker player Rick Salomon in 2002, though they were granted an annulment the following year. (Salomon went on to promote a sex tape that he shot with ex-girlfriend Paris Hilton, and was later married to Pamela Anderson twice, between 2007 and 2008 and again between 2014 and 2015.)
Doherty married her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko, in 2011. They announced their split in April 2023, but their divorce was not finalized until hours before Doherty’s death from breast cancer in July 2024.
Meanwhile, McMahon’s first marriage was with Australian pop star Dannii Minogue between 1994 and 1995. Following his divorce from second wife Burns in 2001, he tied the knot with third wife Kelly Paniagua in 2014 and was with her until his death.
Shannen Doherty's Life in Photos
McMahon’s family confirmed on July4 that he died following a private battle with an unspecified form of cancer. His former Charmed costar Combs mourned McMahon by expressing hope that he would reconnect with Doherty in the afterlife.
“One of a kind is an understatement,” Combs remembered via Instagram. “Your unyielding zest for life and crazy making sense of humor will be sorely missed. The joy and laughter you were the direct cause of will always be remembered.”
She then referenced Doherty in writing, “I hope you find our lady friend and dance in those rose petals.”
McMahon is survived by his third wife Paniagua and 25 year-old daughter Madison, who was born during his marriage to Burns.
“With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” his wife, Kelly, said in a statement. “Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.”
