I'm jealous of my adult daughter because she's more emotionally mature than I'll ever be. She gives me something to strive for.

  • My adult daughter told me she didn't want to hear my advice anymore, setting a boundary.
  • I was impressed with her ability to set boundaries, and she has always been emotionally mature.
  • I'm jealous of her ability to do that, but she is an inspiration to me.

"Mom, I'm going to give you an update on my life, but I don't want your advice because I won't take it anyway."

My daughter effortlessly stated her well-articulated boundaries to me as she hopped in the car. I kind of laughed as I eagerly awaited the juicy details of her life as a confident, 21-year-old college student-athlete.

Molly told me all about her friends, the hockey team, and her classes. She disclosed her desire to study abroad and her newfound love of Irish music, and of course, she dished any boy drama (or lack thereof) as always. I listened. We laughed.

At the end of our conversation, her brave boundary-setting request was a success. She made something so hard, like setting a boundary, look and feel so damn easy. That's when I realized I was envious of her.

My daughter often stepped up into the adult role

I often joke that my oldest daughter, Molly, was born an adult. From the moment she was born, she has been teaching me how to be a better person. For most of the years that she's been alive, she has been taking care of me.

At first, I was an active alcoholic who could hardly take care of herself — let alone her children. When I finally did get sober and didn't really know how to live without alcohol, Molly taught me.

She doesn't know it and maybe she wasn't trying to, but she made the things that felt so hard to me look so easy.

When her parents split and life changed from one house to two, she became a second parent to her siblings in both homes; she simply stepped up. Too much has fallen on her shoulders, yet she never wavers.

She is calm in the chaos — always. She is loving and patient — always. She is a leader — our leader — and we lean on her (even though we shouldn't). Molly has always made everything look easy despite the fact that nothing in her life has ever truly been that. For as long as I can remember, I have looked up to her.

Now she's taking steps I am too afraid to take

"I don't want your advice." She said it with a smile, a pep, and well-deserved pride. She didn't say it rudely. I didn't feel rejected or less than, but I did feel jealous.

It wasn't the first time I wished I could be more like Molly, but this time, it was so much more poignant. I wondered: How is it that my daughter has mastered the challenge of setting boundaries and I haven't? How had Molly learned this valuable lesson at such a young age? And how did she execute it so beautifully?

I have been struggling with this my entire life — so much so that I typically sacrifice my own wants and needs to avoid boundaries altogether, and that leads to resentment and anger, and whatever is the opposite of peace.

The jealousy factor pops up a lot these days. Both of my young adult daughters have their lives ahead of them, and I'm at the point in life where I'm starting to look back. When I do, I realize that I have spent so much time being my own worst enemy because I am not comfortable doing what Molly did. I people-please first, avoid discomfort, and fear rejection.

I feel jealous of my daughter, and I don't think that is a bad thing

Jealousy often has a negative connotation, but I know that the word also has roots in the word zēlos, which means zeal. It is associated with words such as emulation, devotion, or ardor. This is what I often feel for Molly — love, devotion, and a desire to emulate her.

She shows me who I want to be — maybe who I wish I had become sooner.

When your kids are little, people always warn you about how quickly they grow up, but no one ever mentions how beautiful it is when that does happen.

When our kids are young, we can be struck by how they want to be just like us, but we don't usually talk about how we might want to be more like them. We don't talk about jealousy, but maybe we should. Maybe parenting adults evokes jealousy — jealousy in the more ancient sense of the term. And maybe this is the gift and beauty of parenting adult children: They show us who we want to be.

Zoe Saldaña has responded to the recent controversy surrounding her Emilia Pérez co-star Karla Sofía Gascón.

Gascón, 52, began receiving widespread backlash after past social media posts — some of which date back to 2016 — resurfaced online. In some of the posts, Gascón targets various religious groups, including the Muslim population in her native country of Spain. She also criticized George Floyd, who was killed by a police officer in 2020.

“I’m still processing everything that has transpired in the last couple of days, and I’m sad,” Saldaña, 46, said of Gascón’s comments during a Q&A in London on Friday, January 31, per The Hollywood Reporter. “It makes me really sad because I don’t support [it], and I don’t have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.”

Emilia Pérez is a musical drama about the leader of a Mexican cartel, played by Gascón, who hires a lawyer (Saldaña) to help fake her death and transition into a woman. For her role in the film, Gascón became the first transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress at both the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards.

“I can only attest to the experience that I had with each and every individual that was a part, that is a part, of this film, and my experience and my interactions with them was about inclusivity and collaboration and racial, cultural, and gender equity,” Saldaña said on Friday. “And it just saddens me. It saddens me that we are having to face this setback right now.”

She went on to thank the audience for “still showing up” to see Emilia Pérez, emphasizing the film’s message and “the change that it can bring forward to communities that are marginalized.”

She added, “All that I can attest is that all of us that came together to tell this story, we came together for love and for respect and curiosity, and we will continue to spread that message. That’s all we can say right now.”

Gascón, for her part, has since apologized for the resurfaced posts and deleted her X account.

Selena Gomez Defends Her Spanish in 'Emilia Perez' After Criticism

“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,” she shared in a statement via Netflix, per the Associated Press. “All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Emilia Pérez is already a film shrouded in controversy, having received criticisms from Spanish-speaking viewers for its awkward and stilted songs and dialogue as well as the film’s representation of Mexico. Additionally, the film was notably left out of the nominations for the GLAAD Media Awards in January, with the LGBTQ+ non-profit previously calling the film “a step backward for trans representation” in one article.

Many trans critics have cited more than one issue with the film, including its unrealistic portrayal of Emilia’s gender-affirming surgery.

“It’s not about offense or something being not allowed,” critic Drew Burnett Gregory wrote for Autostraddle. “It’s that it’s boring. I don’t understand why a movie that’s so bonkers in other ways chooses to undercut its strengths with this shallow understanding of its titular character.”

King Charles III has reacted to the recent American Airlines plane crash.

“My family and I have been profoundly shocked and saddened by the dreadful news of the tragic air accident in Washington, D.C., which has led to such a devastating loss of life,” the British monarch, 76, said in a Saturday, February 1, statement. “Our hearts, and our special thoughts, are with the people of the United States and our deepest possible sympathy goes to the families and loved ones of all the victims.”

He continued, “I would also like to pay a particular tribute to the emergency responders who acted so quickly to this horrendous event.”

News broke on Wednesday, January 29, that a commercial flight traveling from Wichita, Kansas collided with a military helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River. All 67 people involved in the accident died, including the 60 passengers and four crew members on the American aircraft.

Figure Skaters Share Tributes After Fatal Potomac River Plane Crash

The American Airlines flight manifest also included 14 youth figure skaters who traveled to Kansas for U.S. Figure Skating’s development camp earlier this week.

“It’s beyond the skating community. So many people see this tragedy and the loss of these brilliant young skaters who have poured their lives into building an identity in our sport,” Olympian Scott Hamilton tearfully said on the Today show on Friday, January 31. “For their lives to be taken … is just devastating [and] shocking. It just doesn’t make any sense.”

He continued, “This is where the community comes together. It’s a very tight-knit, very close-knit, very wonderful, caring, supportive community. We’re no stranger to tragedy, but this is just beyond devastation.”

Six of the skaters involved in the airspace tragedy belonged to the Skating Club of Boston.

“Any time I’ve been able to be here and watch them grow. The kids here really work hard, their parents work hard to be here,” fellow Olympian Nancy Kerrigan said in Thursday, January 30, press conference at the Massachusetts rink. “I just feel for the athletes, the skaters, their families and anyone who was on that plane — not just the skaters because it’s just such a tragic event. We’ve been through tragedies before as Americans, as people and we are strong. My response is to be with people I care about and I love; I wanted to support.”

Members of the flight industry have also memorialized the late American Airlines crew members.

“Flight Attendant Ian Epstein wasn’t just a crew member — he was the heart of every flight he worked,” travel influencer Jay Robert wrote via Instagram on Friday. “Through his quick wit and infectious humor, he turned routine trips into moments of joy, making passengers smile even on the most stressful travel days.”

Singer Katharine McPhee Foster also once had an encounter with Epstein “on one of our many flights.” She said in an Instagram Story post on Friday that he was always “a gem.”

TCU star whose brother was killed in New Orleans terror attack catches game-winning touchdown in Senior Bowl

A month to the day that Tiger Bech was killed in the New Orleans terror attack, his brother etched his name in Senior Bowl history.

Jack Bech, a wide receiver at TCU, caught the game-winning touchdown in Saturday's Senior Bowl as time expired and was named the game's MVP.

"My brother has some wings on me. He gave them to me, and he let that all take place. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Tiger, nothing else but them. They're the reason I did what I did today. I attribute it all to them," Jack said after the game.

The New Orleans native played for Princeton from 2016-2018 and was an All-Ivy League kick returner. During his three-year career, he caught 53 passes for 825 yards with three touchdowns. He graduated from the university in 2021 and pursued a career in finance.

He was working as a stockbroker in New York City but traveled back home to Louisiana for the holidays.

Jack said while his success this week will hopefully improve his draft stock, he'd trade it all for a brotherly hug.

DEION SANDERS' SON LIKENS HIMSELF TO TRUMP WHEN DISCUSSING PEOPLE WHO 'ALWAYS JUST TRY TO DESTROY YOU'

"It's been surreal just to be able to come and be in this game. It's a goal you set for yourself. But if I had the option if I came here, had the worst week ever, ruin my draft stock, but that means I could hug my brother right now, I would take that.

"But, on the flip side of that, I don't think I could have had the week that I had if all that wouldn't have happened. His wings were on my side. Him and Jesus Christ are the reasons I was able to do all of this," he said.

"All the big brother does in life is want to see his little brother succeed. He's been my role model my whole life, the person I looked up to, the person I wanted to be. He was the best big brother I could ever ask for. My whole goal in the rest of my life is to live his legacy on."

Jack was part of the American team that earned the 22-19 victory.

The CDC’s Website Is Being Actively Purged to Comply With Trump DEI Order

The CDC’s Website Is Being Actively Purged to Comply With Trump DEI Order

Large parts of the CDC’s website and several important databases were taken down on Friday and Saturday to comply with Trump’s executive orders banning DEI content. Saturday, a message at the top of the CDC’s home page said the website “is being modified to comply with President Trump’s Executive Orders.”

CDC websites and databases taken offline include the CDC Atlas, the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, a CDC website about HIV treatment, and the CDC Social Vulnerability Index. Some of these removals were earlier reported by NBC News. Some of the pages were replaced with messages that read “Page Not Found or Temporarily Unavailable” or “The page you're looking for was not found.” There was widespread uncertainty throughout Friday as to whether a broader takedown across the government would happen.

“Our team’s government affairs firm is advising that as of 5pm today, all U.S. government agency websites will be taken down,” an internal email obtained by 404 Media earlier Friday read. “According to reports, agencies are unable to comply fast enough with President Trump’s EO ordering all government entities to remove all DEI references from their websites, so these websites will be taken offline. There is no word on when they will be made available again.”

At 5pm Friday, however, no widespread, cross-government takedowns happened. Throughout the day Friday and Saturday, however CDC pages continued to disappear. Saturday, a message at the top of the CDC’s website said “CDC’s website is being modified to comply with President Trump’s Executive Orders.”

404 Media has reported on U.S. government pages about gender identity were taken down; that GitHub commits showed the Trump administration scrubbing government web pages in real time; and how archivists are working to save thousands of datasets disappearing from Data.gov.

Some federal contractors and federal employees spent much of Friday afternoon panicking about the deletions, and there was uncertainty about what would be taken offline and how widespread the takedowns would be. A CDC employee that 404 Media granted anonymity to speak about sensitive issues said that they were told by the Office of the Chief Information Security Officer of the Department of Health and Human Services that all employees were told they had to delete their preferred pronouns from their email signatures by 5 PM Friday.

Agencies were also ordered to “review all agency programs, contracts, and grants, and terminate any that promote or inculcate gender ideology” and to “take down all outward facing media (websites, social media accounts, etc.) that inculcate or promote gender ideology,” with a deadline of 5 PM Eastern Friday. Agencies were forced to “send an email to all agency employees announcing that the agency will be complying with Defending Women and this guidance.” Agencies have been ordered to create a report within the next week that includes “a complete list of actions taken in response to this guidance.” The specific executive order is Trump’s “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government (Defending Women).”

A similar message was posted to Reddit earlier on Friday. “We are being told that the CDC website is scheduled to go down by EOD today. Please share this with your partners and encourage them, as well as you should plan to download any significant information,” it reads.

There have been several efforts to archive data that already existed across the federal government, including the End of Term Archive, a volunteer effort that saved hundreds of terabytes of data before Trump was inaugurated.
