71 organizations signed a letter warning Mark Zuckerberg about ending fact-checking on Meta in the US

  • The International Fact-Checking Network warned of Meta's move to crowdsourced fact-checking.
  • A group of 71 fact checkers said the change is "a step backward" for accuracy.
  • The group proposed crowdsourcing in conjunction with professionals, a "new model."

The fact-checking group that has worked with Meta for years wrote Mark Zuckerberg an open letter on Thursday, warning him about the company's move toward crowdsourced moderation in the US.

"Fact-checking is essential to maintaining shared realities and evidence-based discussion, both in the United States and globally," wrote the International Fact-Checking Network, part of the nonprofit media organization Poynter Institute.

The group said Meta's decision, announced Tuesday, to replace third-party fact-checkers with crowdsourced moderation on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in the US "is a step backward for those who want to see an internet that prioritizes accurate and trustworthy information."

Meta told the IFCN about the end of its partnership less than an hour before publishing the post about the switch, Business Insider reported. The change could have serious financial repercussions for the fact-checking organizations that rely on Meta for revenue.

The organization and the letter's 71 signatories, representing groups from the US to Syria, said Meta has fact-checking partnerships in more than 100 countries.

"If Meta decides to stop the program worldwide, it is almost certain to result in real-world harm in many places," IFCN wrote. Meta has not announced plans to end the fact-checking program globally.

Meta said it plans to build a crowdsourced moderation system this year similar to the community notes used by Elon Musk's X, where people can weigh in on posts ranging from the serious to the mundane. Musk laid off hundreds of X's trust and safety workers after he bought the company in 2022, and X has since been slow to act on some misinformation, BI previously reported.

IFCN wrote that community notes could be used in conjunction with professional fact-checkers, a "new model" for collaboration.

"The need for this is great: If people believe social media platforms are full of scams and hoaxes, they won't want to spend time there or do business on them," IFCN wrote.

Nearly 3.3 billion people used a Meta product every day in September, according to the company's most recent financials — more than 40% of the world's population.

Ad insiders who spoke to BI this week said they didn't expect the changes to hurt the company's business. Meta has more than a fifth of the US digital ad market — in second place behind Google, per data from BI's sister company EMARKETER.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

  • Google is joining tech companies like Amazon and Meta in donating to Donald Trump's inauguration.
  • The search giant said it is giving $1 million, more than triple what it gave Trump in 2017.
  • In September, Trump threatened to prosecute Google if he was elected president.

Google said it is donating $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's coming inauguration.

"Google is pleased to support the 2025 inauguration, with a livestream on YouTube and a direct link on our homepage. We're also donating to the inaugural committee," the company's global head of government affairs and public policy, Karan Bhatia, told CNBC.

Google's contribution, which will help fund the celebratory events after Trump takes office, is more than triple what it gave in 2017. The search giant donated $285,000 to Trump's first inauguration, per Federal Election Commission filings.

Back in September, Trump said in a Truth Social post that he would prosecute Google "at the maximum levels" if he won the election.

In his post, Trump accused Google of "illegally" using its system to display only "bad stories" about him while surfacing positive reports about his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Google and Trump's transition team did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider.

Trump's second inauguration, on January 20, has seen donations pour in from multiple companies and business leaders.

The president-elect has received contributions from tech companies like Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Uber. Like Google, all four companies have donated $1 million each.

That's on top of the personal donations made by tech executives like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. Both Altman and Khosrowshahi donated $1 million each as well.

"One of the big differences between the first term, in the first term, everybody was fighting me. In this term, everybody wants to be my friend," Trump said at a press conference in December.

"I don't know, my personality changed or something," he added.

Since winning the election in November, Trump has raised more than $200 million in donations, of which at least $150 million will go toward the inauguration, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Trump raised $106.8 million for his first inauguration in 2017, per the FEC.

Jonathan Van Ness Is on Weight Loss Drug Amid Binge-Eating Disorder

Jonathan Van Ness is taking weight-loss medication to help him deal with a binge-eating disorder that, he says, caused him to rapidly gain and lose weight in the past.

The hairstylist and Queer Eye alum, 37, shared in a post via TikTok on Wednesday, January 8 that he is using a GLP-1, a category of medication that includes Ozempic and is used to treat diabetes and aid in weight loss.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, GLP-1 medications mimic the GLP-1 hormone that the small intestine makes naturally. The hormone slows stomach emptying and increases how full you feel after eating.

“Alright, I have a confession to make. Yes, I am on a GLP-1 or a weight-loss medication,” Van Ness said in his post. “If you have been following me for a long time, you’ll know that I gained and lost weight several times very publicly. And this time in my life, I knew that I needed a little bit of extra help.”

While Van Ness said he tried taking the medication as a pill in the past, it did not work. Now, he’s using an injectable GLP-1.

“With everything I’ve been through publicly and privately in the last couple years, I gained quite a bit of weight, wasn’t feeling good,” Van Ness added. “The most important thing was, my binge-eating disorder was out of control.”

He continued, “I was consistently making decisions that I regretted with compulsive eating and with bingeing that just left me feeling really not good, depressed and out of control.”

Van Ness began taking the injections in September and he says he “felt immediately better.”

“I, for the first time in my life, have had control over my food intake,” he explained. “It has helped me so massively, and that’s part of why I wanna be honest with you about it because I know how important asking for help is, and how much asking for help can change your life in terms of healing. This time, I needed help.”

Van Ness added that he had Dr. Terry Simpson, a surgeon and culinary medicine expert, on his “Getting Curious” podcast this week to talk more about weight loss medications and whether they are the “future of weight loss and metabolic health” or “just another wellness trend.”

“I got so many questions, so we will be revisiting this,” he said. “We love you, I love you, and thank you for listening, and I wish you all a good day.”

Jennifer Lopez Elevates Baggy Jeans With a Fitted Turtleneck

Making recreating her look easy, we can barely tell the difference between her designer style and the Easyfox Knee High Pointed Toe Boots. Just like the princess’s, this boot features a pointed toe design, knee-high length and chunky block heel. It also comes in a similar black suede fabric — a true lookalike for her style!

One thing we love about the short, block heel on these boots is how easy it makes them to walk in. Another thing that makes them walking-friendly is their anti-slip rubber sole and roomy pointed toe. They’re made of a faux leather material for durability and a soft inner lining as well. Great for harsh winter weather, the leather makes them waterproof as well.

Easy to get in and out of, the boots have a simple zip-up design on the inner leg. Further than just black, the boots come in several other neutral tones as well like olive, brown, nude and black. Find them in sizes 6 to 11.

They don’t have tons of ratings yet, but the ones that are there are really good! In fact, one reviewer of the boots said that they “look more expensive in person.”

“I love these boots,” they said. “They are so comfortable right out of the box. I wore them to work today and I got so many compliments!”

They can also be made casual too, when worn with leggings, jeans and sweaters for an afternoon at the winery with friends. They’re a true closet staple!

Riley Leonard returns from injury to lead Notre Dame to national championship game in CFP win vs Penn State

Notre Dame is going to the first College Football Playoff National Championship game of the expanded format era after a comeback 27-24 win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Thursday.

Fighting Irish kicker Mitch Jeter kicked the game-winning 41-yard field goal to cap off a back-and-forth battle between the two storied programs.

Notre Dame's comeback victory may have never materialized had quarterback Riley Leonard not summoned the fortitude to return to the game after an injury.

"He's a competitor and competitors find a way to win," Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said in a postgame interview on ESPN right after the game. "It's an honor to be a part of this with him."

Leonard had to leave the game in the second quarter, forcing in backup Steve Angeli. At that point, Notre Dame was already behind 10-0. But Angeli helped get the Irish back into it with a field goal drive to give Notre Dame its first points, as the Irish went into halftime down 10-3.

But Leonard returned to the game in the second half, and led a touchdown drive to tie the game. The two teams then traded score for score in a competitive second half.

EX-NFL STAR, WITH TIES TO ELI MANNING TRADE, DISCUSSES CHANCES OF SHEDEUR SANDERS REFUSING TITANS FOR GIANTS

Leonard had a chance to lead a go-ahead drive with two minutes remaining, but the Penn State defense came up with a big third-down sack to force a Notre Dame punt.

Then Allar, with a chance to lead a game-winning drive with less and possibly put himself into the conversation for the top quarterback taken in the NFL Draft, came back onto the field for the biggest moment of his career. And in that moment, he threw an interception to give the ball right back to Leonard and the Irish.

Leonard then came back on the field and led the final drive that put Jeter in position to seal the deal.

"I just trusted in Jesus," Leonard said in a postgame ESPN interview.

Notre Dame's storybook run continues after it came up with a historic win against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans just one day after a deadly terrorist attack killed 14 innocent people.

The Irish will meet the winner of the Cotton Bowl on Friday between Ohio State and Texas.
