Canva's cofounder says creatives are making a mistake by not embracing AI in their work

  • Canva's cofounder said creatives should embrace AI, and it'd be foolish not to do so.
  • Cliff Obrecht said designers are reacting to AI as they did to Canva in its early days.
  • But Canva helped free designers' time for more "high-value work," he said.

Canva's cofounder and chief operating officer says it's foolish for creatives not to embrace AI.

Cliff Obrecht, who cofounded the design software company with his wife Melanie Perkins, said designers are reacting to AI like they did to Canva in its early days.

"So at Canva, when we launched, a lot of designers said, 'Canva, we hate you. You are ruining our industry. You are like letting everyone design,'" Obrecht said on a Tuesday podcast episode of Masters of Scale.

"And so over time, it didn't take long, within four years, designers didn't feel threatened by Canva," he said, adding that Canva's tools helped designers free up time for "high-value work."

He said he sees "AI as just another step in that evolution," and that it's time for creatives to embrace the new technology.

"Not embracing AI as a creative is, you can see where it's going. It seems folly," he said to the podcast's host, Bob Safian.

Canva first launched AI-powered tools in 2023, with its "Magic" branded tools, which assisted in copywriting and designing. In April, it launched its Visual Suite 2.0, which integrated tools for design, writing, coding, and data visualization.

This comes as creatives from various industries have raised concerns over the last few years about AI killing their jobs.

In 2023, Adobe employees slammed the company after it launched Firefly, an extensive suite of generative AI tools. Adobe employees, whose customer base consists of creatives, said the tool would kill the jobs of some of its customers.

There were also concerns that Adobe could use creators' content to train its AI models, something the company denied in a blog post in 2024.

The AI debate has reached Hollywood. In 2023, more than 11,000 Hollywood film and TV screenwriters went on strike to criticize the use of AI in the film industry and demand more regulation in the field.

However, Jeffrey Katzenberg, the cofounder of DreamWorks, said in an AI conference in December that top Hollywood showrunners and creators are embracing AI and seeing it as a useful resource to their creative processes.

In June, former Disney exec Kevin Mayer said in an Opening Bid podcast that AI could make video and storyline creation more efficient for creatives.

Representatives for Canva did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Most Polarizing TV, Movie Couples: From 'Summer I Turned Pretty' to 'The Bear'

From The Bear’s Carmy and Claire to The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Belly and Jeremiah, TV and movie fans have lots of opinions about which couples left the right impression.

Gordon’s character was introduced as a love interest for Carmy, which became a divisive narrative choice for critics who questioned whether Claire was fully explored as her own person. Others, meanwhile, argued that Carmy should have been paired off with Sydney, who is played by Gordon’s real-life best friend Ayo Edebiri.

Gordon, who has been linked to White since 2024, addressed fan backlash before season 4 premiered.

“I’m always ‘the friend,’” she told Vanity Fair in June 2025. “I’ve never played the romantic person. I was like, ‘Whoa, this is going to be a different experience.’”

Gordon noted that White’s role “is a character that people feel so protective over, and it’s been kind of controversial to bring a romantic element into the show. That’s been at times annoying, fascinating and interesting — just to be a part of something that people have opinions on.”

Season 2 of The Bear tried to let Carmy (White) have a love life but his romance with Claire (Molly Gordon) seemed to do more harm than good. Not many were thrilled by the couple and then to make things worse, the show refused to give up on them which resulted in way too much focus on Carmy and Claire than necessary — and that continued into the next two seasons.

Fans were introduced to Kylo Ren and Rey as enemies in The Force Awakens — which is why the pair's kiss in The Last Jedi took so many people by surprise. Even though some viewers were expecting Rey and Finn to get together based on their initial introduction — other viewers felt like Kylo Ren and Rey's combative energy hinted at something more romantic.

Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Spike's (James Marsters) steamy chemistry was cut short after the vampire almost raped the slayer in season 6. The show's writers argued that the controversial moment was necessary to help motivate Spike's journey to gain a soul. While some fans still held out hope for a Spuffy happy ending, many turned their backs on the couple after the difficult scene.
After filming wrapped, Marsters called the scene one of the hardest he ever had to do.

Even though Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) weren't presented as love interests in the Black Panther sequel, many viewers couldn't help but connect with their potential. For some, Namor's interactions with Shuri hinted at a devotion — which others slammed the villain for trying to kill their favorite characters in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The 100 left behind an infamous legacy, including the love triangle at the center of the CW show. Clarke (Eliza Taylor) and Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) fans were proud of the representation that the couple were able to offer LGBTQIA+ viewers. Meanwhile,  Bellamy (Bob Morley) and Clarke shippers were hoping to see an organic enemies to lovers story unfold on screen.
Unfortunately, neither side got their wish after Lexa and Bellamy were both killed off by bullets in separate seasons.

Blair's (Leighton Meester) romance with Chuck (Ed Westwick) came off as abusive and toxic for many fans. However, Dan (Penn Badgley) and Blair's progression from friends to lovers didn't read as authentic for every viewer.

Based on the Summer I Turned Pretty books, Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Christopher Briney) are meant to be. However, the Prime Video show made some people root for Belly and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) even though they knew it might not be endgame.

Through the years, Betty's (Lili Reinhart) chemistry with Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Archie (KJ Apa) left many fans at a loss. Since season 1, some viewers connected with Betty and Jughead's sweet love story and the potential it had down the line.
Meanwhile, Betty and Archie shippers patiently waited until the childhood best friends found their way back to each other.

The Vampire Diaries was all about love triangles — and Elena's (Nina Dobrev) bond with the Salvatore brothers was the ultimate will they, won't they? Elena eventually chose Damon (Ian Somerhalder) but some audience members questioned her decision due to how selfish the eldest brother was when it came to their relationship.

Team Ross or Team Joey is a conversation that has continued even after Friends wrapped up its time at NBC. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross (David Schwimmer) were each other's lobsters — but Joey (Matt LeBlanc) offered Rachel a connection based off years of friendship.

Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) are a perfect example of a couple whose time may be running out. After originally forming a bond in season 1, Nancy and Jonathan's relationship became a topic of discussion on screen and off.
Many fans felt as if the pair drifted away from one another — with Nancy potentially feeling something for Steve (Joe Keery) again — and needed to move on. Meanwhile, other viewers pointed out that Nancy and Jonathan's reunion in season 4 seemingly hinted at a proper reconciliation.

The age-old incest question took Game of Thrones fans by storm when Jon (Kit Harington) got together with his aunt, Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). Family members sleeping together isn't as taboo within the universe created by George R. R. Martin — but not everyone is on board.

In season 1 of Netflix's Wednesday, the main character (Jenna Ortega) found out that her love interest was at the center of the mysterious murders happening in town. For some fans, Tyler's (Hunter Doohan) actions came off as irredeemable. Meanwhile, other shippers were quick to point out that Tyler was controlled by Laurel (Christina Ricci) and that Wednesday and Tyler could eventually find their way back to one another.

Even though Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Ginny's (Bonnie Wright) romance was a sweet addition in the books, not every fan felt satisfied by the delivery in the films.

The Grease couple is considered a classic movie couple — but their love story didn't age well for everyone. Some viewers have questioned the decision to have Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) go through a makeover in order to appeal to Danny (John Travolta).

Ukraine has been catapulting drones to strike Russia's million-dollar air defenses deep behind battle lines

A screenshot of a GUR-uploaded video shows a Bober drone being launched from a ramp.

Ukraine Main Defense Intelligence Directorate via YouTube/Screenshot

  • Ukraine's GUR has released a video of a fixed-wing drone being catapulted into action near Crimea.
  • It said its special forces used UJ-26 Bober drones to strike at faraway Russian defenses.
  • The $110,000 fixed-wing drones appear to be equipped with thermal cameras and FPV controls.

Ukraine's intelligence directorate (GUR) has released footage of Kyiv's UJ-26 "Bober" drone being launched via catapult to attack Russian air defenses.

The video, published on Tuesday, shows the locally manufactured 8-foot-long loitering munition being slung into the air from a fixed ramp. GUR said its special forces launched the drones to attack targets in Russian-occupied Crimea.

The new launch method allows the fixed-wing Bober to enter combat without landing gear, which would likely improve its range or maneuverability. Traditionally, the Bobers take off from airstrips like traditional aircraft.

Given that the ramp would likely have to be set up in Ukrainian-held territory west of the Dnieper River, the drone would have to travel a minimum of roughly 60 miles to reach Russian targets in Crimea.

The drones also seem to be equipped with thermal cameras in several first-person view clips uploaded by the defense intelligence agency.

One montage appears to show a drone evading a missile and then flying into a $15 million Pantsir S-1 point air defense system. A second drone is also shown flying into the ground next to a Pantsir S-1 as the vehicle crew scrambles for cover.

GUR described the attack as the "successful defeat" of the Pantsir, but did not show footage of the results.

The intelligence agency also said it conducted similar successful attacks on three Russian radar systems — The Niobium-SV, the Pechora-3, and the Provotnik GE — as well as a fourth-generation Su-30 fighter.

It uploaded several first-person view clips of drones approaching these systems with thermal cameras, though many of them can only be seen flying close to their target.

Business Insider could not independently verify the damage caused.

Ukrainian media regularly describe the Niobium-SV as a $100 million system. Earlier Russian estimates from before the full-scale invasion indicated that the Kremlin was acquiring the Niobium-SV in 2016 for about $40 million per unit. However, these may have since been fitted with more expensive upgrades.

Meanwhile, one Bober, which translates to "beaver" in Ukrainian, reportedly costs around $110,000 to manufacture. The propeller drone is meant for long-range attacks and is known to carry the KZ-6 charge, a 6.6-pound demolition explosive designed to break through concrete or armor.

It's yet another example of how the war has increasingly featured cheaper systems being used to attack and, at times, destroy expensive high-end equipment, posing difficult questions for the traditional defense procurement model that heavily prioritized advanced technology.

For example, one of Ukraine's biggest community drone funds, run by activist Serhii Sternenko, reported to donors that its crowdfunded drones have damaged at least 11 Buk surface-to-air missile systems in 2025. The fund often publishes footage of such strikes.

Depending on whether they have the latest upgrades, these defenses can cost Russia between $10 and $100 million each. By comparison, Sternenko's fund said it receives roughly $6 million in donations a month for its entire budget.

Kylie Jenner Follows Timothee Chalamet on Instagram After 2 Years of Dating

It’s (finally) Instagram official between Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet.

Jenner, 27, began following boyfriend Chalamet, 29, on the social media platform on Tuesday, July 1, after more than two years of dating.

The cosmetics founder currently follows 119 accounts in total and the authenticated “tchalamet” is now one of them.

Despite Jenner’s public gesture, the Complete Unknown star has yet to follow her in return as Chalamet’s account still shows that he follows no Instagram accounts at all.

Kylie Jenner and Timothee Chalamet’s Relationship Timeline

The pair were last seen publicly together at the end of May when they posed for photos and cuddled up to one another courtside at the New York Knicks game against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Photos snapped on May 31 showed both Jenner and Chalamet dressed in head-to-toe Knicks gear and they weren’t shy in hiding their affections throughout the game as several kisses and hugs were exchanged.

The duo were first linked in April 2023 following Jenner’s split from on-off-boyfriend Travis Scott, with whom she shares two children: daughter, Stormi, 7, and son, Aire, 3.

Fans Think They Spotted Timothee Chalamet in Kylie Jenner's New Selfie

Us Weekly confirmed Jenner and Chalamet’s romance less than one month later, with a source revealing that the actor “is a total gentleman and treats [Kylie] with respect.”

The insider continued, “He’s very charming and he makes her laugh, and he’s easy to talk to. He’s not like any of the other guys she’s dated before and although he may not seem like her type, they have really good chemistry.”

After two years spent entering events separately and reconnecting inside away from high concentrations of flashing light bulbs, Jenner and Chalamet finally stepped out for their first red carpet appearance together on May 7.

Attending the 70th David Di Donatello awards ceremony at Cinecitta Studios in Rome, Italy, the pair appeared loved up in coordinated outfits — Chalamet dressed in a black suit and Jenner wearing a black gown with a plunging neckline.

The duo posed for photos with Chalamet’s hand wrapped around his girlfriend’s waist and they were both seen laughing with photographers between snaps.

A source told Us in January that Jenner had enjoyed publicly supporting Chalamet in her own way. “Timothée is very focused on his career and Kylie loves being on the sidelines cheering him on,” the source told Us exclusively at the time. “She loves that he’s in the spotlight more than her. It’s been a breath of fresh air.”

Cassie Feels a 'Sense of Closure and Freedom’ After Diddy Trial

Cassie is finding peace as the trial against Sean “Diddy” Combs comes to an end.

“Cassie feels relieved now that she is removed from the trial,” a source exclusively tells Us Weekly. “She is glowing and finally feels free. This marks the final chapter in her long and painful history with Diddy, and she is finally at peace.”

The insider adds that Cassie, 38, “feels a deep sense of closure and freedom” now that “a weight has been lifted” off her shoulders.

Cassie (real name Casandra Ventura) took the stand during Diddy’s trial to speak on her history with the disgraced music mogul. During her emotional testimony, Cassie claimed that she endured physical and sexual abuse through her relationship with Diddy, 55, which occurred from 2007 to 2018.

How Cassie Is Moving Forward After Alleged Diddy Abuse and Shocking Testimony

Diddy is on trial for sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution following his September 2024 arrest. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied all of the allegations against him.

Before his arrest, Cassie sued Diddy, accusing the rapper of abuse throughout their relationship. Diddy denied Cassie’s claims in a statement shared by his attorney.

“Mr. Combs vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations,” Diddy’s lawyer Ben Brafman said in November 2023.

One day after the lawsuit was filed, Cassie and Diddy settled out of court. While on the stand in June, Cassie revealed she received a $20 million payment.

Two weeks after completing her testimony, Cassie welcomed her third child, a son, with husband Alex Fine. In addition to their newborn little one, the couple are also parents to daughters Frankie and Sunny, whom they welcomed in December 2019 and March 2021, respectively.

Now that she is a mom of three, Cassie is planning on staying “out of the spotlight” so she can focus on her growing brood.

“The girls love having a baby brother in the house and are obsessed with him. She had a hard labor but feels her family is complete now,” the source tells Us. “Cassie is enjoying living on the East Coast for now and raising her kids near her family.”

Cassie Stepped Out for Rare Outing Before Giving Birth to Baby No. 3

According to the insider, Cassie has put Hollywood behind her and she’s prioritizing a “private life” with her family.

“She’s now fully focused on her future and the life she’s built outside of the public chaos,” the source explains, adding that “Alex does everything he can to make sure Cassie is in a good headspace and they are a great team. She is so happy to have him.”

While Cassie has focused on motherhood, Diddy’s trial has continued. On Tuesday, July 1, the jury reached a verdict on four out of the five charges. The only count that the jurors had not reached a decision yet was for racketeering conspiracy. Judge Arun Subramanian dismissed the jury on Tuesday and will have them return the following day to resume their deliberations.

Seven months later, Arnold revealed that her daughter, June, had arrived via C-section.

Taylor Swift Rocks Her Own Merch on Lunch Date With Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift knows good merch when she sees it — including her own.

Swift, 35, was spotted on a lunch date with boyfriend Travis Kelce on Tuesday, July 1, while in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, according to a photo shared via X.

While any Swift and Kelce sighting is exciting for fans of the couple, it was Swift’s wardrobe choice that turned heads this time. The Grammy winner donned a white, long-sleeved button-down shirt that appeared to have a design with birds on the back.

Eagle-eyed fans quickly pointed out that Swift was wearing her own seagull-printed button down that is part of her summer collection — and pays homage to her 1989 (Taylor’s Version) record cover. (There is also a matching men’s T-shirt in the design, but sadly, Kelce, 35, was not wearing it for the meal.)

Travis Kelce’s Postgame Suit Was So ‘1989’-Coded the Brand Changed Its Name

“Wait I’m crying is she wearing her own merch?” one fan wrote via X on Tuesday, sharing a side-by-side of Swift in the shirt and a photo from the official Taylor Swift merchandise website.

Another user replied, “She just wanted more clothes and branded it as merch #respect.”

Taylor Swift’s 'Greatest in the League' Merch: A Travis Kelce Tribute?

A separate X user commented, “She’s just a girl, proud of her hard work” with a smiley face emoji, while a different fan replied, “As she should! That shirt is elite fr.”

Swift launched her summer 2025 merch collection on June 11, giving off major New England vacation vibes with plenty of preppy to go around.

The line includes Oxford shirts, polos, tote bags with a TS crest and joggers. There are also several nods to her albums, including an open knit sweater with “1989” written across it in blue lettering, which is from 1989 (Taylor’s Version).

The “Cowboy Like Me” jogger, matching crewneck and hat are all in honor of the Evermore song by the same title.

Wait, Did Taylor Swift Borrow a Sweatshirt from Travis Kelce’s Closet?

Swift’s own style has been on display throughout the past few months as she and Kelce have stepped out for various dates. While the pair flew under the radar following the end of the 2024-2025 NFL season in February, they have begun to come out of hibernation as of late.

Last month, the duo attended a family wedding, a Stanley Cup Finals game in Florida and traveled to Nashville for Kelce’s Tight End University event among other outings. (Swift even made a surprise appearance on stage during the TEU event, singing “Shake It Off” for the crowd.)

As their public outings have increased, Kelce and Swift have faced some backlash with haters saying they are craving attention.

Kelce, however, clapped back at the ridicule, explaining that they’re “having fun with it, man.”

The Kansas City Chiefs player said during a Tuesday appearance on the “Bussin’ With the Boys” podcast, “Being a couple, dude. You already know. It gets thrown out there like we’re trying to seek the attention every now and then.”

He insisted, “We’re just enjoying life and having fun.”
