Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck Finalize Their Divorce
Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s marriage is officially over.
The pair settled their divorce on Monday, January 6, according to documents obtained by Us Weekly. The news comes 20 weeks after Lopez filed for a dissolution of marriage on August 20, 2024.
The relationship between Lopez and Affleck, 52, goes back more than 20 years. Lopez and Affleck met on the set of Gigli in 2001 and got engaged in November 2002. They were initially scheduled to get married in September 2003, but they called off their wedding days before the planned ceremony, and in January 2004, they confirmed their split.
The two reconnected in May 2021 and became engaged again in April 2022. They tied the knot in Las Vegas that July and hosted a second ceremony in Georgia the following month.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s Relationship Timeline
In May 2024, speculation surfaced about the state of Lopez and Affleck’s marriage after they were not spotted together for 47 days. Us Weekly confirmed later that month that Affleck moved out of their Beverly Hills home.
A source exclusively told Us in June that they couldn’t “get on the same page [and had] been discussing divorce as an option.”
The following month, a second insider claimed there was a “sliver of hope” for a reconciliation.
“They are going through so much individually and as a couple,” a third source told Us. “They may take some time to see if this complicated moment can resolve itself and they come back to each other [as] better people.”
Lopez ultimately filed for divorce from Affleck in August, listing April 26 as their date of separation. Instead of utilizing an attorney, she submitted the paperwork herself on the two-year anniversary of the duo’s Georgia wedding.
History of Jennifer Lopez's Past Divorces: From Ojani Noa to Ben Affleck
According to an insider, the date of the filing was no coincidence. “The timing of the divorce was a big f–k you to Ben,” the source told Us in August.
Despite the jab, celebrity divorce attorney Chris Melcher speculated in an August interview with Us that Lopez’s decision to file without an attorney of record was “intentional to send a message that this will not be a fight.” Melcher believed that the pair had likely already “worked out most of [the] issues before going public with the filing.”
Lopez was previously married to Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003 and Marc Anthony — with whom she shares twins Max and Emme — from 2004 to 2014. Affleck, for his part, was married to Jennifer Garner from 2005 to 2018, and they coparent their three children, Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.
