One or Eight’s NEO Talks 'Kawasaki,’ Says J.Cole Lyrics ‘Saved’ His ‘Life’

One or Eight band Exclusive
One or Eight

One or Eight have had a groundbreaking year.

In August, the eight-member Japanese boy band released their first track, “Don’t Tell Nobody,” — along with the music video — which was written and produced by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. The group, however, first launched in June with a performance video of “Kawasaki.” The video gained up to 6 million views in five days. And early this month, a remix for the song and its music video, featuring Big Sean, dropped. The Bounce Back singer discovered One or Eight by watching them perform. NEO opened up to Us about what it was like working with acclaimed musicians, his biggest influences and the kind of artist he strives to be.

We had the opportunity to perform in front of Big Sean … we gave it a shot,” NEO told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview. “We offered him if he could have a verse on our revamp version, and he gave us a generous ‘yes’ and that’s how it all happened.”

While shooting the music video in both Los Angeles and Japan, when Big Sean noticed the group was nervous, he would tell him, “‘Guys, let’s have fun.’ And that energy really helped us kind of enjoy the shoot, which turned out to become a great result as the music video was,” NEO said. “The huge lesson he taught us by how he carried himself out was staying humble.”

NEO also shared a core memory from the set: “There’s a scene where Big Sean’s right in the middle, and the rest of the eight of us were banging our heads with helmets on, but the helmets were so heavy, our necks started to hurt after three seconds, and we had to bang through the whole song. So it’s two straight minutes of banging with a huge bobble on your head,” he said. “That was pretty tough for us, but it was fun.”

In addition to NEO, the other members include MIZUKI, REIA, RYOTA, SOUMA, TAKERU, TSUBASA and YUGA.

NEO described the song’s success as “baffling” and told Us how he and One or Eight’s members want to keep the momentum going.

“There’s a lot of pressure on us because we’re bandwagoning on the virality the ‘Kawasaki’ had, but we have to continuously put out good music,” he said. “So all the members were always in the studio. We’re always practicing, and we’re always prepared for a better performance.”

Their sound is a mix of hip-hop and pop, and NEO told Us that the inspiration comes from those he looks up to in the industry.

From Lil Wayne to Lil Uzi Vert, A Guide to the Most Popular ‘Lil’ Rappers

“Me, personally, I really look up to J. Cole,” he said. “His lyrics quite literally saved my life and thought-provoking lyrics like that. It’s not easy to write. And being able to be a great songwriter at the same time as a great performer is what I really want to achieve … He’s my role model.”

He continued to explain how the rapper’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive was a “lifesaver” for him: “I had really dark times in my life and listening to that really lifted my head up.”

NEO now wants to pay it forward with One or Eight’s fanbase, noting that he hopes the band can be “a safe space for the listeners.”

Inside Hollywood’s Treatment Center and What the $165,000 Price Tag Entails

Richard Taites' Carrara Treatment Spa & Wellness Center
Richard Taites

Richard Taite, an addiction expert and owner of Carrara Treatment Spa & Wellness Center — a luxury rehab facility in California — is giving Us an inside look at where some celebrities go to rehab and what a stay at Carrara would look like.

“They all have 1000 thread count sheets, all Egyptian cotton sheets,” Taite recently told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview. “You’ll walk in and you’ll see their Carrara chocolate on top of their robe. And it’s not like the robes that you get in some lame spa.”

Carrara’s $165,000 a month price tag includes many workout class options such as tai chi, special forms of yoga, pilates, as well as several pools, a spa, flowers from French Florist — and one can’t forget the $600 candles! Plus, you can even bring your dog.

There’s also no shortage of skin care treatments at the wellness center. “You know that you could be at Carrara for 30 days and get a treatment every single day and not get the same treatment? I’m talking facials, scrubs, wraps, massages, different variations of all of it,” he said.

Celebrities Who Have Been to Rehab

Richard Taites' Carrara Treatment Spa & Wellness Center
Taite said he received around 2,000 resumes to be the chef, but once he saw a woman who previously worked as Stevie Wonder’s personal chef, he hired her “on the spot.” He then told the “amazing” woman he wanted the food centered around a blue zone diet because “part of self-care is what we put in our bodies.”

A “blue zone diet” is mostly plant-based, focusing on unprocessed foods designed to improve overall health. Carrara follows this by incorporating lots of fresh ingredients into its menu.

“It’s Mediterranean food … [the chef] made boiled salmon and Chilean sea bass with lotus root and kale and all these different delicious exotic vegetables,” he said of the food served at Carrara. “It’s organic, and it’s prepared fresh every day, and it’s prepared with love every day, [by] somebody [that] actually cares.”

Taite also noted that the treatment center isn’t all lavish.

“People come to treatment, and they’re completely broken, they’re shame based. They feel they’ve donkeyed off their entire life,” he said. “When people come into treatment, they need to be loved, nurtured and respected and supported, empathized, [be given] compassion and attuned to one’s needs before they know they have a need. That is the important thing. Now, Carrara is built for people who absolutely positively have to have the finest experience under these difficult circumstances.”

Richard Taites' Carrara Treatment Spa & Wellness Center

He continued, “It’s not just for people who have to have the best of everything … It’s for people that have to have the single most comfortable experience they can humanly possibly have under these difficult circumstances.”

Stars Who've Gotten Sober

Taite is the former owner of Cliffside Malibu, where he worked with celebrities like Scott Disick and Oscar De La Hoya. Taite’s passion for helping people with addiction stems from his own understanding and experience of what it was like being an addict for two decades. (Taite has now celebrated over 20 years of sobriety.)

Taite also claims that a big difference between Carrara and other treatment centers is that they “don’t leak” inpatient’s information. “We would never even consider it … Their identities are going to be protected for sure,” he said.

Carrara Treatment Spa & Wellness Center offers three locations in L.A. and one in Malibu.

Virgin River's Annette O'Toole on Season 6, Hope's Ex-Husband and More

Virgin River s Annette O Toole Talks Hope s Season 6 Journey From Ex Husbands to Surprise Strippers
Annette O’Toole as Hope McCrea in ‘Virgin River.’

Virgin River star Annette O’Toole is opening up about her character Hope’s season 6 journey — including what it was like shooting that stripper scene.

“That scene for me to shoot, it was a little tricky,” O’Toole, 72, exclusively told Us Weekly while promoting the sixth season, which was released on Netflix on Thursday, December 19.

In said scene, which takes place in episode four, a stripper meant for Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and her friends — who are out celebrating Mel’s impending wedding at a Bachelorette Party — accidentally shows up for Hope McCrea (O’Toole) and her knitting circle at Jack’s Bar. Hijinks ensue.

While the shooting of it was “really fun,” O’Toole said it was also “bittersweet,” as Hope’s friend Muriel (Teryl Rothery) was awaiting a breast cancer diagnosis. O’Toole explained how she was “thrilled” for Muriel — who received a spicy lap dance from the erotic dancer, to the elation of the other women — because for her, “the dread and the feeling about your is my life over” is a relatable
situation.

“That’s a real thing for anybody because you never know what’s gonna happen. But especially for older people,” O’Toole explained. “You don’t know what’s around the corner. So, you have to embrace every moment. And I love that scene for that.”

Tim Matheson as Doc Mullins, Annette O’Toole as Hope in ‘Virgin River.’

For O’Toole, getting to delve deeper into the “complicated” dynamics and characterization of each woman in the knitting circle has become one of her favorite parts of filming.

“They’re older women, and they still have these wonderful, rich lives and problems and issues they deal with, with one another and with their town, which they all love deeply,” she said. “I love how committed they all are to their community.”

While moments with her circle were filled with joy, O’Toole also faced more complex, emotional moments for Hope this season. Her ex-husband, Roland (John Ralston), was introduced in episode six, and their tumultuous past was revealed when she went to visit him about adopting a horse. O’Toole admitted to Us that shooting those scenes was “strange” as she previously concocted her own past for Hope in her head, noting that to her, the character is a “widow twice over.”

Despite having an initially different vision for Hope’s past, O’Toole acknowledged that the introduction of an ex for Hope “makes sense” dramatically — and could serve as a potential story line for season 7.

“I have no idea how it’s gonna go,” she told Us. “I mean, I think it’s good that they leave the door open. So, they are enemies enough where it might be good storytelling next year to do it.”

Virgin River s Annette O Toole Talks Hope s Season 6 Journey From Ex Husbands to Surprise Strippers
Tim Matheson as Doc Mullins, Annette O’Toole as Hope in ‘Virgin River.’

O’Toole added, “They’re already writing season 7, and I don’t know what they’re doing with any of that. I haven’t talked to [showrunner] Patrick Sean Smith. So, I think that would be fun. I think anytime you can throw more hard, not hardship, but more problems into a relationship, not just a relationship, but just for a character to deal with, the better, especially if it’s gonna be a long-running show. You gotta have these issues and stuff to deal with. And it can’t just be all smooth sailing.”

Hope, of course, is happy in her current relationship with Doc (Tim Matheson). After years of ups and downs between them, season 6 allowed the pair to lean into the romance — something O’Toole “loved” getting to explore.

TV Couples We Should Leave Behind in 2024: 'Outer Banks' and 'The Bear'

“We can just play with it,” she said of her on-screen chemistry with Matheson. “We like doing that. And we prepare, we try to fill in the holes that … that aren’t explained in the script. We just go over those ahead of time.”

While season 6 gave Hope and Doc a much-earned honeymoon period, season 7 is likely to be a more challenging one for the duo. First, there’s the return of Roland, plus the issue of Doc’s practice being in jeopardy, which was revealed in the final moments of the finale.

Regardless of what lies ahead of the character, O’Toole is thankful she gets to “inhabit” someone like Hope, who she’s learned to look up to these past five years.

Annette O’Toole as Hope McCrea, Gwynyth Walsh as Jo Ellen, Nicola Cavendish as Connie in ‘Virgin River.’

“She’s a lot of characteristics I wish I had,” she told Us. “ I wish I could be more of a pitbull sometimes. And she always knows what to say. She’s just a big, big person inside. She’s got big feelings about everything and nothing is trivial to her. I think it’s interesting to play. There’s just a lot about her that’s interesting to me.”

O’Toole added that while many people argue Hope is too “bossy” or “nosy,” she sees it as a good thing, calling it evidence that people are “interested” in the character. The Smallville alum also gave credit to showrunner Smith, who has ensured Virgin River is a balance of authentic storytelling while also maintaining a means of escapism.

“It’s not just, ‘Oh, it’s a romantic show.’ Yes, it’s beautiful and you have all these lovely, gorgeous people running around. But it’s real too,” she said. “It’s something people can strive for, to have that feeling in a community where people really care about one another and are always there, always showing up with a cup of coffee and [saying], ‘Tell me, what do you [need], how do you feel?’”

Virgin River season 6 is now streaming on Netflix.

Jane Seymour Feels ‘Post-Traumatic Numbness’ After California Wildfire

Jane Seymour Shares Feeling Post Traumatic Numbness After Recent California Wildfires 304

Jane Seymour is thankful for her safety after her home was exposed to last week’s California wildfires.

“I’m very grateful, incredibly relieved,” Seymour, 73, told Us Weekly exclusively at the American Ballet Theater Annual Benefit in Los Angeles on Monday, Dec. 16. “It’s interesting, you kind of have a sort of post-traumatic numbness. It’s like, ‘Did that really happen?’ And it did.”

Many celebrities – including Malibu residents Cher, Barbra Streisand and more — had to flee their homes as a wildfire tore through the Southern California coastline. One Hollywood star, legendary actor Dick Van Dyke, was forced to evacuate just days before his 99th birthday.

The James Bond star explained that after she saw how the fires had affected other members of her community, she realized how lucky she was that her home was still standing.

Memorable Bond Girls Through the Years

“Driving around Malibu and looking at all the charred remains is not fun,” she said. “But really considering what could have happened, we were all very fortunate.”

The actress is beloved for her appearance in the hit western series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, which ran for six seasons in the ‘90s. Seymour’s portrayal of Dr. Michaela Quinn — a physician who leaves Boston in search of an adventure — earned her a Golden Globe in 1996 for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Drama.

After the show was canceled by CBS in 1998, many fans were disappointed and, decades later, still long for a revival.

When asked if there were currently any plans for a reboot, Seymour replied, “Not that I know of.”

Hottest Celebs Over 40

“I’m in the middle of my own series right now, Harry Wild,” she explained. “So, we’ve been doing that, and I did do a Christmas movie a couple of years ago with Joe Lando.”

The actress did, however, tease the possibility of a reunion between the two. “So, people are actively trying to find more material for us to do together,” she told Us. “Whether it’s Quinn or something else. We love working together.”

Even though Seymour’s Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman costar and her are now on good terms, according to Seymour they didn’t get along while filming the show because it took place right after they dated in real life.

“We didn’t actually talk to each other, other than in dialogue or making out for about six or seven years,” Seymour previously told Us in a 2019 interview.

Seymour went on to explain that the pair “couldn’t” actually be “together” in “real-life.” Despite the tension, Lando later became her “closest friend on the planet.”

Katy O’Brian Teases Tom Cruise’s ‘Terrifying’ 'Mission Impossible' Stunts

Mission Impossible 8 Star Katy OBrian Teases Tom Cruises Absolutely Terrifying Stunts in Upcoming Film
Katy O’Brian

As if hanging off the side of an airplane, climbing the world’s tallest building and jumping from one building to another (and actually breaking his ankle) wasn’t daring enough, according to Katy O’Brian, Tom Cruise’s stunts in the upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning film will be even more intense.

“Tom is always topping whatever he has done,” O’Brian — who stars in the film alongside Cruise, 62, — exclusively told Us Weekly while walking the Out100 red carpet in Los Angeles on Wednesday, December 11. “So, if you thought that little motorcycle stunt in the last movie was something, this is absolutely terrifying.”

In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One —the seventh film in the beloved franchise — Cruise drove a motorbike off the edge of a cliff, flew off the bike and then parachuted to the ground. In preparation for the film’s death-defying scene and to pull it off safely, Cruise reportedly trained with stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood for months.

“He’s wild! But I don’t think that anyone in the future of film will ever top what he has done,” the Love Lies Bleeding star continued.

The eighth film in the Mission Impossible franchise adds O’Brian to an already star-studded cast. Returning cast members include Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett and Rolf Saxon. Christopher McQuarrie is also returning to direct.

O’Brian told Us about her experience joining the team.

“I think one of the things that I really loved was just how collaborative of an environment it was. Like Tom and McQuarrie, they trusted me almost the second that I came in there, and they really just built this amazing team,” The Mandalorian star said.

“Tom is standing behind the camera working with you the whole time. It’s kind of nuts,” she added. “He’s there in your face the whole time. So, I just think that’s excellent and they’re so passionate about it.”

Katy O’Brian Will Be ‘Disappointed’ to Not Get Tom Cruise’s Coconut Cake

O’Brian believes that after spending time with Cruise on the film, she’s earned a spot on the actor’s famous cake list, referring to the actor’s famous coconut cakes he sends to costars and friends during the holidays. Glen Powell, Jimmy Fallon, Henry Cavill, Kirsten Dunst and more have all reportedly received the so-called “Cruise cake.”

“I believe there’s one in the mail for me,” O’Brian told Us. “I can’t wait. I hope that’s [it]. I’m going to be really disappointed if I find out that it’s not what it is.”

Phoebe Robinson on How She Builds Social Media Community

Phoebe Robinson is getting real about why she started posting thirst trap compilations of male celebrities.

“I just was like, ‘I know I’m horny for celebs. I know I’m not the only one. So let’s build a community,’” Robinson, 40, exclusively told Us Weekly on the red carpet at “Comic Relief Live” in New York City on Monday, December 9. “And it’s been super fun doing the [hashtag] Thirsty Thursdays.”

The comedian’s posts, in which she uses the hashtag #ThotNaysh, have grabbed the attention of some high-profile actors. “Every once in a while, someone responds — like Orlando Bloom commented one time,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh, my God, that’s like, so cool.’”

According to Robinson, Bloom, 47, commented on her post by writing “a bunch of emojis talking about Lord of the Rings,” followed by heart emojis, which caused her to think, “It’s just like, ‘Oh, my God, I love you.’”

Kristen Wiig, Catherine O'Hara and More of the Funniest Women in Hollywood

The hashtag has racked up numerous posts — and to Robinson, she never expected it to blow up the way it did.

“I was just being silly. I was like, ‘Oh, this is a fun, silly thing you could do on social media. That feels low stakes. I don’t have to worry about numbers,’” the What Men Want actress said. “I just really am just having a good time.”

Phoebe Robinson on How She Builds Social Media Community I m Horny For Celebs 383

Robinson’s most recent #ThotNaysh post features Jude Law and part of the caption reads: “#ThotNaysh, not since Paul Newman, have I been, like, ‘Damn, this a white man I’d curl my hair into a civil rights bayang,’ sing all five verses of ‘We Shall Overcome,’ & ask Thurgood Marshall to represent us pro boner – 😏 – so the love ‘tween me & today’s honoree can be recognized by all fifty United States.”

However, one of the Clash of the Cookbooks cohost’s wildest posts involved a former U.S. president.

The Internet's Best Boyfriends of 2023, Ranked

“When I did one on Barack Obama, I tagged him in it, [and] people were like, ‘You’re nuts for tagging him in the post.’ But I had to go for it,” Robinson said. “He did not respond because he has more important things to do.”

Phoebe Robinson on How She Builds Social Media Community I m Horny For Celebs 384

Even though Robinson had previously interviewed Michelle Obama, that didn’t stop her from adding Barack on the tag button. “I was like, ‘You know what? If she beats me up, I deserve it. It will be fine,’” she joked.

Robinson also wants to expand her social media presence following the popular reception of her #ThirstyThursday posts, and she’s hoping to turn the hashtag into a podcast.

“I really love interviewing people. I’ve done it a lot, whether it’s podcasts or interviews with Michelle Obama on her book tour,” she told Us. “So, I want to go back to that [and] sort of highlight these fun, hot people in a really cool, interesting way.”

Ciara Announces ‘Dance Icon’ Competition, Encourages Competitors to ‘Always Go For It’

Ciara Dance Competition
Ciara

Ciara is looking for the next dancing icon.

The “Level Up” singer, 39, has launched “Dance Icon” — in partnership with Colossal — an online, dancing fundraiser competition where people can vote to give an unknown dancer their big break. The winner will get to appear in Ciara’s newest music video and take home $20,000.

“I identify with the power of dance and how it inspires others. I thought ‘Dance Icon’ would be such a fun way to engage with the world of dancers out there,” Ciara shared in an exclusive statement to Us Weekly on Monday, December 9. “I know firsthand that really amazing things happen when the dance community unites, and I’m looking forward to realizing the impact we’re capable of when we come together.”

Ciara’s resume proves she’s the perfect choice to lead the competition. She released her hit single “Goodies” and album of the same in 2004, which became her first No. 1 single and topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. In 2006, she won a Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video for Missy Elliot‘s “Lose Control,” which she was featured on. Most recently, Ciara released “Wassup” with Busta Rhymes in September and a 20th anniversary vinyl of the album Goodies.

However, in addition to her accomplishments vocally, the “1,2 Step” singer is also known for her killer dance moves: she’s won three Soul Train Awards in the Best Dance Performance category in 2010, 2013 and 2018.

Ciara Dance Competition

“Dancing allows me to express my truest creative self,” Ciara told Us on Monday. “I love dancing to upbeat tempos, but ultimately it’s the music that inspires how I move. Whether fast or slow — whenever I start to dance, I feel something special happening and that something allows me to be fully free in the music.”

Dance Icon will benefit the Why Not You Foundation, Ciara and her husband, Russell Wilsons nonprofit that supports student access to equal education opportunities, children’s health and food security initiatives.

Voting begins on Monday, February 3, and ends on Friday, April 18, 2025. All voters earn one free vote every 24 hours; additional votes can be purchased and proceeds go to the Why Not You Foundation. Dancers with the most votes are narrowed down weekly and the final eight dancers will head to Scottsdale, Arizona, for a live, dance-off competition, and perform in person for Ciara and Jamaica Craft, her longtime choreographer.

Russell Wilson Reveals the 1st Thing He Asked Ciara After Their Engagement

“You never know what ‘your moment’ could be, so please, always go for it!” she told Us. “I want to find the perfect spot in my music video to create a forever moment for the dancer who wins. Trust that even when the tiniest door opens for you, that it could lead you into your next era.”

Registration for Dance Icon is now open for dancers nationwide aged 13+.

Law Roach Doubles Down on Retirement Plans

Feature Law Roach 38th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards
Law Roach attends the 38th Annual Footwear News Achievement Awards at Cipriani South Street on December 04, 2024 in New York City.

Law Roach, the celebrity stylist known for dressing talents like Zendaya and Céline Dion, is still confirming he’s retired, outside from dressing the two.

“I think that chapter in my life is [done]. I think I did well, and hopefully, I made an impression and opened the doors for some people,” Roach, 46, exclusively told Us Weekly on the red carpet at the 2024 Footwear News Achievement Awards in New York City last week. “I’m just moving in a different direction now. I think sometimes you have to know when it’s time to make a pivot and try something new.”

However, Roach teased that the door may not be officially closed forever, “Not saying I won’t ever do it again, but right now, that’s not what I’m focused on.”

Instead, Roach is now focused on pivoting to other projects with the limited free time he has like authoring the book, How to Build a Fashion Icon, Notes on Confidence from the World’s Only Image Architect, which was released in September.

Relive Zendaya’s Show-Stopping Fashion Moments Through the Years

Roach has also recently started the “School of Style,” which offers a fashion stylist certificate and serves to “empower and educate the next generation of stylists,” he said. “So, I’m working. I’m just not shuffling garment bags anymore right now.”

Law Roach and Zendaya
Law Roach and Zendaya attend the 2024 Green Carpet Fashion Awards at 1 Hotel West Hollywood on March 06, 2024 in West Hollywood, California.

In March 2023, Roach announced his retirement in a now-deleted Instagram post where he uploaded a screenshot of the word “Retire” followed by a caption that read, “My Cup is empty….. thank you to everyone [who has] supported me and my career over the years. Every person that trusted me with their image, I’m so grateful for you all.”

The Illinois native continued: “If this business was just about the clothes I would do it for the rest of my life but unfortunately it’s not! The politics, the lies and false narratives finally got me! You win … I’m out. ❤❤❤.”

The announcement came as a shock, and Roach’s comment section was filled with messages of support from Naomi Campbell, Christian Siriano, Niecy Nash and more.

Since then, Roach has come out of retirement — but only for icons.

See Celine Dion’s Wildest Fashion Looks in Honor of Her 53rd Birthday!

“I was retired for seven months, but it keeps calling me back,” Roach told Us earlier this year. “I came back because of Zendaya, and now I did something with Céline Dion and Naomi Campbell, so I think I unretire for icons.”

Roach has worked with Zendaya, 28, since she was 14 years old. “We’ve grown up together so we’ve just evolved together,” he said.

Roach also teased that he will be working with Dion for her Las Vegas residency. “It’s definitely gonna happen,” he told Us in June. “She’s the queen of Vegas. She always will be.”

Julia Stiles.

Julia Stiles appreciates her fame — but the limelight still comes with its challenges.

“Right now, I try to look at it as something that I’m grateful for because it allows me a lot of opportunities,” Stiles, 43, exclusively told Us Weekly on the red carpet at the Gotham Awards on Monday, December 2. “One of the reasons I got to direct my first feature is because people know me as an actress from movies.”

She added, “It can be a little scary, don’t get me wrong, but I try to focus on the positive aspects of it.”

Stiles will make her directorial debut with Wish You Were Here, which comes out early next year. Stiles added that while she thought her long career on-screen credits like 10 Things I Hate About You, Silver Linings Playbook, Save the Last Dance, The Prince and Me, Hustlers and more would have prepared her for working behind the camera, she quickly realized there were still new things she had to learn.

“When we were actually filming, I was able to be on set and think, ‘Oh yeah, I know how to do this,’ because I’ve been on a bazillion movie sets,” she explained. “[Wish You Were Here] is a love story, and even in the five years it took to get it made, it feels even more relevant now. We need a movie like this more than ever because it’s so hopeful about connection and falling in love.”

Zach Braff! Olivia Wilde! Ben Affleck! Hollywood Actors Turned Directors

Although she’s been acting since the early ‘90s, Stiles told Us there is one movie in her filmography she thinks is the most underrated.

“I’m always happy when, occasionally, somebody will say, ‘Oh, I saw that movie It’s a Disaster that you were in,’” she said. “I thought it was such a hilarious script. I’m always excited when people tell me that they’ve seen it.”

Wish You Were Here will be released early next year.

Guy Pearce Thinks ‘Death Defying Acts’ ‘Got Lost’ in ‘Harvey Weinstein Wash’

Guy Pearce Thinks the Film Death Defying Acts Got Lost in the Harvey Weinstein Wash 894
Guy Pearce.

Guy Pearce is opening up about the one film he says should have received more recognition — and why he believes it flopped.

“I think Death Defying Acts,” Pearce, 57, exclusively told Us Weekly on the red carpet at the Gotham Awards on Monday, December 2. “Gillian Armstrong directed [it.] I was in it with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Saoirse Ronan … an incredible talent. It was one of those films that got lost in the Harvey Weinstein wash.”

Produced by Myriad Pictures and distributed by The Weinstein Company — the former film production company founded by the now-disgraced producer and his brother, Bob WeinsteinDeath Defying Acts was filmed in 2006 and released in 2007. The film went on to become a huge box-office disappointment. At the time, Harvey,72, had a reputation as being a bully who abused his power at the studio.

Guy Pearce Thinks the Film Death Defying Acts Got Lost in the Harvey Weinstein Wash 896

“That was an unfortunate turn of events because the film’s really beautiful. Gillian’s an amazing filmmaker,” Pearce said, before adding that more people should go watch it. “Death Defying Acts is a really beautiful, mystical love story. I don’t do many love stories, so when you do you want people to see it.”

Hollywood's Sexual Misconduct Scandals

In 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported that dozens of women had accused Harvey of sexual assault, sexual abuse and rape, subsequently sparking what was later referred to as the #MeToo movement. In 2020, Weinstein was found guilty of criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape in his New York City trial. (He was acquitted on the three other counts including predatory sexual assault and first-degree rape.) In April 2024, his conviction was overturned and in September, he pleaded not guilty to an additional criminal sex act charge. Weinstein has been held at Rikers Island as he awaits a retrial on rape charges and was recently transferred to a nearby hospital for medical purposes.

In addition to the allegations involving Weinstein, Pearce told Us that the film was released during a particularly difficult time in his personal life. “I turned 39 during the movie, which strangely, was the age my father was when he died,” he explained.

Pearce was 8 years old when his dad, Stuart — a pilot — died in a plane crash in 1976. While Pearce’s memory of his father is “all sort of based on photos,” he reflected on what he believes his dad would think of his acting career.

“I actually have this feeling that he wouldn’t have been so keen on it. I think he would have preferred me to be in the military, which wasn’t gonna happen,” Pearce quipped.

Pearce’s additional film credits include L.A. Confidential, The Hurt Locker, The Rover, Lawless, Mary Queen of Scots, The Catcher Was a Spy and Memento, among others.

Pearce’s most recent role was in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist starring opposite Adrien Brody, who received a lot of buzz for his performance this award season. Along with Brody, 51, Pearce has been making waves for his work in the film, too — he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance at the Gotham Awards but lost out to Clarence Maclin in Sing Sing (another A24 movie).

Pearce’s Death Defying Acts’ costar Ronan, 30, was nominated for Outstanding Lead Performance but lost out to Colman Domingo, who also starred in Sing Sing.

Laraine Newman Praises Daughter Hannah Einbinder’s ‘Hacks’ Success

Very Proud Mom Laraine Newman Talks Daughter Hannah Einbinder s Success So In Awe
Laraine Newman and Hannah Einbinder.

Laraine Newman feels like a proud mom to see the success her daughter Hannah Einbinder has achieved from the popular TV series Hacks.

“I’m really so in awe of how quickly she’s developed as an actor,” Newman, 72, exclusively told Us Weekly at The Groundlings 50th Anniversary Event in Los Angeles. “When she started it, I was so worried she had no acting experience at all, so she really rose to the occasion, I would say admirably.”

Einbinder, 29, landed HBO’s Hacks in 2021 with no prior acting experience. Over the show’s three seasons, she’s received three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series as well as two Golden Globe nods. In the show, Einbinder plays Ava Daniels, a young comedy writer who’s partnered to veteran comic Deborah Vance (Jean Smart).

However, comedy is something Einbinder was well versed in long before Hacks. Newman was one of the original Saturday Night Live cast members, Newman and she shares children Hannah and Spike Einbinder with comedy writer Chad Einbinder. Newman celebrates both her children following in her footsteps.

How the 'Saturday Night' Cast Compares to the 'SNL' Stars They're Playing

“Both my kids, fortunately they have an aptitude for the work,” Newman said. “So, the only thing I said was, ‘It’s tough. Work hard, be kind to people and let the chips fall where they may. Enjoy the work because you never know what’s going to happen.’”

Newman is also very vocal in supporting her kids. In September, she took to social media to share her dismay after The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas won an Emmy in the category of best supporting actress in a comedy series over her daughter who was also nominated.

“F—. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Newman wrote via X on Sunday, September 15, before she soon deleted the post. In an also deleted post, she responded to a fan who questioned her opinion, “I know. I took it down. Not my best moment.”

Newman later wrote on X (which is also now deleted), “I think the Bear is a great show but IMHO it’s not a comedy- not even a dark comedy.”

However, Hacks did beat out The Bear for Outstanding Comedy Series.

When asked if she would ever appear on Hacks or if there’s been any talk about it, Newman replied, “There has been no talk, but I am proud. And they’ve also got so many great people on that show and it’s a really specific tone and they’ve got a lot of people to choose from.”

She further explained that she doesn’t know if she’ll ever share the screen with her daughter someday, before telling Us, “I haven’t really thought about it.” For now, she’s just like any proud mom, cheering on Hannah from the sidelines.

Jesse Metcalfe Pitches Himself For ‘Industry’

Jesse Metcalfe Pitches Himself For Industry I Think in a Former Life I Was a Stockbroker
Jesse Metcalfe.

Jesse Metcalfe is pitching himself to HBO.

“I want to be on Industry. If they make another season of Industry,” Metcalfe, 45, exclusively told Us Weekly during a recent Double Serum Generation 9 launch event.

Why does Metcalfe believe he’d be the perfect fit for the series? “I think in a former life, I was a stockbroker. I’d like to be in finance, 6-foot-4 in finance,” he playfully replied. The actor added to his pitch by stating that although he hasn’t worked in a newsroom, he has experience with mailrooms.

The drama series added Games of Thrones star Kit Harington to its third season, which earned 1.6 million viewers per episode across all platforms. And, lucky for Metcalfe, HBO renewed Industry for a season 4 less than two weeks before the season 3 finale aired on September 29. So, there’s a possibility his wish could come true.

Which TV Shows Are Renewed, Which Are Canceled in 2024-2025?

Metcalfe is no stranger to TV. For five years in the mid-2000s, he played John Rowland, a hunky teenage gardener, on the hit ABC show Desperate Housewives, which ran for eight seasons before wrapping in May 2012. Metcalfe’s John engaged in an adulterous affair with Eva Longoria’s character, Gabrielle Solis, who was one of the lead housewives.

When asked if he missed the daily routine of working on Desperate Housewives, Metcalfe jokingly responded, “Do I miss being on a TV show? Yeah. I’d like to be on a TV show. Yeah, sure. Anyone got a job for me?”

In August, Metcalfe gushed to Us about working on the series: “I had an incredible experience on that show. Not only did that make my career, not only was that really my big break, but I had an absolute blast working with Eva Longoria. All we did was laugh our way through all those awkward sex scenes.”

Love Is in the Air! Best TV Couples of All Time

The John Tucker Must Die star also opened up about the pair’s age difference and having to hide the relationship from their on-screen neighbors. Metcalfe even compared the show to Euphoria, saying Desperate Housewives was “pretty tame by today’s standards.”

“I’m super proud to have been a part of that show. It will definitely go down in television history as an iconic show,” he said.

Metcalfe most recently starred alongside Alec Baldwin, Stephen Dorff and Tom Welling in the thriller Clear Cut, which was released in July and directed by Brian Skiba. His next gig will be playing Chris Black in the upcoming horror film The Possession at Gladstone Manor. Caylee Cowan, Charlotte Kirk, Darren Weiss, Barbara Crampton, William Mapother and Lin Shaye round out the cast.

How Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall Made It Work, According to Their Son

How Old Hollywood Supercouple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall Made It Work According to Their Son 218
Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall.

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall’s 12-year marriage was passionate, yet challenging. Still, the Hollywood power couple remained married until Humphrey died in 1957. The couple’s only son, Stephen Humphrey Bogart, is opening up about what his parent’s relationship taught him about love — and how to make it work.

“I think loyalty. I think talking. You gotta talk to each other and you have to respect each other. You have to have each other’s back,” Stephen, 75, told Us Weekly in an exclusive interview tied to the recently released documentary Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes. “And humor, if there’s no humor in a relationship, then it’s not gonna work — you gotta laugh.”

Bacall and Humphrey met and fell in love in 1943 while filming To Have and Have Not. At the time, Bacall was 19 years old, while Humphrey was two decades older and married to another woman, Mayo Methot. Despite their differences, the pair began dating while Humphrey waited to finalize his divorce. Later, in 1945, the pair married, before going on to star in multiple films together, including The Big Sleep, Key Largo and Two Guys from Milwaukee. The couple shared two children, Stephen in 1949 and Leslie Howard Bogart in 1952.

Stephen said he “really didn’t know” his father when he was alive — his dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer when he was 7 years old and died when he was 8.

“He was a reluctant father,” Stephen said. “When I was born, he didn’t want to have kids. He wanted my mother to be his only, and kids were gonna kind of get in the way maybe.”

Stephen continued to explain what he remembered about his family’s dynamic,“This is what his day would be: He would go to work, come home. Back in the ‘50s, kids were to be seen and not heard. So the edict would be I would have dinner before he came home so he could have dinner with my mother. And maybe we’d sit there for half an hour or something like that.”

Even though the couple’s love was strong, they experienced their fair share of struggles. According to the book Bogie & Bacall: The Surprising True Story of Hollywood’s Greatest Love Affair, Bacall allegedly had an emotional affair with United States politician and presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson. The author, William J. Mann also alleged that Humphrey also had an affair with wigmaker Verita Thompson, which reportedly began before he met Bacall. Despite their purported entanglements, the couple’s marriage held firm — Bacall was by his side and took care of Humphrey after the actor was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer and until the end of his life.

Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes explores the women in Humphrey’s life and how those relationships affected his career. For Stephen, “the whole film was surprising” and “so nuanced” because — except for his mom — he wasn’t aware of the details surrounding his dad’s previous relationships. Stephen says he was specifically unaware of Humphrey’s three other ex-wives, Helen Menken, Mary Philips and Methot.

Celebrity Couples Who Have Been Together for 50 Years (Or Longer!)

“[I hadn’t thought] about Helen. [Humphrey] was a stagehand. And how often does a superstar end up with a stagehand?” Stephen said. “He wanted to go to Hollywood and he went to Hollywood and he met Mary. And he met and he brought her out to Hollywood. I think he really loved Mary. And he wanted her to stay, but she wanted to go back to Broadway.” He further explained, “Then Mayo kind of came on and took over his career. And for some reason with her, his career just went skyward.”

As for Stephen’s love life, the lessons of loyalty, respect and humor he’s learned from his parent’s relationship helped him form a lasting relationship of his own — he’s been happily married to Carla Soviero since 2014.

Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes will be available to stream on all major services on December 9.

Michelle Williams Would 'Love' to See Beyonce and Kelly Rowland on Broadway

Michelle Williams Would Love for Her Destiny s Child Girls Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland to Star on Broadway Next 642

As Michelle Williams hits the stage for her next Broadway role, she’s wishing her former Destiny’s Child girl group members — Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland — would, too.

“I would actually love for them to,” Williams, 45, exclusively told Us Weekly on the purple carpet for the opening night of Death Becomes Her. “I think they’re very capable of starring in a Broadway show — absolutely!”

While Beyoncé and Rowland aren’t announcing their theater runs just yet, a Destiny’s Child reunion did take place earlier this month when the duo — along with Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles — attended Williams’ first show to support their longtime friend.

Death Becomes Her, it turns out, has sparked multiple reunions. Williams, and Paul Tazewell — the show’s costume designer — teamed back up after working together on the first national tour of The Color Purple in 2007. Their shared history immediately put Williams at ease (Tazewell is also known for his work on Broadway’s Hamilton, which won him a Tony award for Best Costume Design for a Musical, and this year’s Wicked film.)

Independent Women! Where Are Destiny’s Child’s 6 Members Now?

“When I saw his name was actually a part of that design team, I said nothing,” she told Us. “ I knew I was gonna be in good hands.”

In the first act of Death Becomes Her — based on the 1992 movie of the same name — Williams stands center stage in a sparkly purple ensemble designed by Tazewell himself. Some of those more glamorous costumes reminded Williams of her own girl group days.

“Especially with all the beading and some of the jewels. I know in some of the fittings, I was reminded of all those times of being cinched in corsets,” Williams continued. “I do love that about theater, the dressing up that we can do depending on the type of show. And this show, beautiful, beautiful designs.”

Movies That Have Been Turned Into Broadway Musicals Over the Years

In Death Becomes Her, Williams plays Viola Van Horn, a woman who gives a youth potion to Madeline Ashton (Megan Hilty) and Helen Sharp (Jennifer Simard). Williams inherited the role from Isabella Rossellini in the film and found her own way to keep it fresh, telling Us, “All I can do is bring me, you know?”

As a Destiny’s Child fan, Williams’ costar Christopher Sieber, who plays Ernest — originated by Bruce Willis on screen — was in awe working with such a musical legend. “When they said Michelle was going to join us, I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” Sieber told Us. “And all of my gay friends were like, ‘What? Michelle Williams?’ I said, ‘Yeah!’”

Julia Mattison, meanwhile — who composed the show’s music and lyrics — was “in heaven” working with Williams, and used Williams’ decades-long career to her advantage.

“My Harmony brain was very much wired thanks to Destiny’s Child,” Mattison told Us. “Her voice is so ingrained in the same years where I became obsessed with musical theater and Broadway. And so, coming up and having her be a part of it is so amazing.”

Death Becomes Her is now playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Alex Garfin Wanted to Steal the Bob Dylan Role From Timothee Chalamet

Alex Garfin Would ve Kicked Out Timothee Chalamet to Play Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown

If Alex Garfin could have gotten away with it, he would have stolen Timothée Chalamet’s role as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown.

“I would’ve kicked out Timothée Chalamet and played Bob Dylan,” Garfin, 21, playfully told Us Weekly during an exclusive interview while promoting Superman & Lois season 4. “That’s one thing — it would’ve been great. It was always my dream role.”

Garfin considers the “Like a Rolling Stone” singer, 83, to be a “genius” who writes songs that make you feel like you’ve “watched a movie.” Those are the kinds of traits he looks for in character, because he wants to get inside the mind of people who are “exceptional.”

While the Dylan role ultimately went to Chalamet, 28, he and Garfin come from a similar background, as they both attended NYC’s LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. The school’s other notable alumni include Jennifer Aniston, Adrien Brody, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina and Ansel Elgort.

“We were looking up to these guys,” Garfin said of Chalamet and Elgort, 30.

Now Garfin is on his way to inspiring future alumni, having scored the role of Jordan Kent (a.k.a. Superboy, the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane) in Superman & Lois in 2021. After three years, the show is now in its fourth and final season, with the series finale set to air on Monday, December 2.

“I’m gonna miss a lot of the crew the most, just because I know that most likely all of us won’t be in the same room again,” Garfin said, adding that he’ll particularly miss Bitsie Tulloch, who plays Jordan’s mom, Lois Lane — and her daughter who visited the set. (Tulloch, 43, shares Vivian, 5, with husband David Giuntoli.)

“I just love that girl with all my heart,” Garfin told Us. “She always makes me art. I have it hanging on my wall at home. She’s really special.”

Timothee Chalamet Channels Bob Dylan in 1st Set Photos From Biopic

After embodying Superboy for the past few years, Garfin wants to play characters less introverted going forward. “I’d love to play something a little bit … just something a little more upbeat, a little more engaging,” he said, naming Beethoven and Charlie Chaplin as a couple of his other dream roles.

“I’m an extroverted guy,” Garfin explained. “Sometimes fans are scared when they meet me, which I feel really bad, you know? Because it’s a very down-low character, very sensitive. [The fans] come up to me and they’re all so sensitive. I’m like, ‘Hey guys!’ I would love to play something also a little opposite Jordan.”

Superman & Lois airs on The CW Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.

Shakira Is Giving Away Her Purple Lamborghini to One Lucky Fan

Shakira Car Giveaway

The so-called Queen of Latin Music has a special gift for her devoted fans.

Shakira has announced she will be giving away her purple car, a 2022 Lamborghini Urus, to one lucky contest winner to celebrate the success of “Soltera.”

The singer partnered with Univision to create the contest, which launched on Wednesday, November 20. “A promise is a promise! I confirm! I’m going to give my car to someone who really wants to have it and enjoy new unforgettable moments with the people I love the most,” Shakira, 37, captioned an Instagram post announcing the giveaway, along with a series of photos of her and the Lambo.

“This car was a gift to myself as I began my single life, but I realized that what truly matters is human connection,” Shakira said in a press statement. “The car, the clothes, the material things — they don’t transform us. It’s the people we love and the connections we build that truly make a difference.”

To enter the contest, fans can upload a dance to “Soltera” on Instagram and TikTok with the hashtag #ElCarroDeShakira — the deadline is November 29. Shakira and friends will then select five finalists whose dance moves will be voted on by the public on December 5. The winner will be announced live on Despierta América on December 6.

“Let’s keep dancing because it’s good for us!” the press release continued. “Share your dances and creative videos — I’ll be watching.”

“Soltera” — which means “single woman” in English — was released on September 25. The song is about the singer embracing the perks of being single following her 2022 split from Gerard Piqué. “I have the right to misbehave/ To have a good time/ I’m loose and now/ I can do what I want/ I’m having a good time single,” Shakira sings in the song.”

The track has reached the Global Top 50 on Spotify but it wasn’t featured on her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran. Shakira’s 12th studio album, released on March 22, was recently nominated for Best Latin Pop Album for the 2025 Grammy Awards. It also scored a No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Album and Latin Pop Album Charts.

Shakira is currently on her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour, making stops in Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, Toronto, Brooklyn, Chicago and more. Her Latin American tour will kick off on February 11 in Brazil, and will also hit Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Mexico.

The contest is open to U.S. residents only who must be at least 18 years old. More details and official rules can be found on elcarrodeshakira.com.

What Is ‘The Lost Children’ on Netflix? Stars React to Film’s Debut

What Is The Lost Children on Netflix Joe Jonas Paul Wesley and More Celebs React to Film s Debut 158
Joe Jonas, Paul Wesley.

The Lost Children is Netflix’s latest documentary — a true story about how four children survived a plane that crashed in the Amazon rainforest in Colombia on May 1, 2023.

The documentary premiered on Tuesday, November 14, becoming the third most-watched movie on the streaming platform shortly after its debut. The film also has all the celebrities talking — just like Us.

Directed by Oscar winner Orlando von Einsiedel (The White Helmets, Virunga), with codirectors Jorge Durán and British-Peruvia and journalist Lali Houghton, The Lost Children tells the story of how children Lesly, Tien, Soleiny and Cristin survived a violent plane crash that killed their mom. It also unravels the mystery of how the young survivors managed to live in the Amazon rainforest for 40 days.

Joe Jonas, Phoebe Tonkin, Paul Wesley, Samara Weaving and Ron Howard are among the celebrities that have praised the doc and urged fans to watch it, with some writing supportive messages on their Instagram stories.

Over the weekend, Wesley wrote on his story: “So proud of my friends @mark_bauch and @orlandovoneinsiedel Everyone watch The Lost Children on Netflix. Out now!”

Tonkin, shared a similar message, “My friends @mark_bauch & @orlandovoneinsiedel made this beautiful and inspiring film I can’t wait to watch it @netflix.”

Jonas wrote “Make sure to watch unreal story.”

What Is The Lost Children on Netflix Joe Jonas Paul Wesley and More Celebs React to Film s Debut 156

The film features first-hand testimonies and extraordinary archive material from those who risked their lives to search for the children, including the Colombian Army, Indigenous volunteer rescuers, and dedicated family members.

According to The Washington Post, the kids originally intended to board the small, six-seater plane with their mom, Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia, to start a new life in Bogotá, Colombia with Magdalena’s husband and Tien and Cristin’s father, Manuel Miller Ranoque. Their journey came after their family’s village was taken over by a criminal group.

Around 35 minutes into the flight the engine failed, causing the aircraft to plunge head-first into the jungle. The three adults who were seated in the front of the plane died during or immediately after the crash. The reason the children survived, it’s believed, is because they were seated in the back of the plane where the aircraft sustained the least amount of damage. During the children’s time in the Amazon, they reportedly lived off seeds, roots and plants.

Two weeks after the crash, Colombian soldiers found Hernán Murcia, the pilot, Indigenous leader Herman Mendoza Hernández and Magdalena all dead.

“It’s always crucial to treat stories involving painful human tragedy with the deep respect and sensitivity they deserve,” von Einsiedel said in a press release announcing the film. “I was drawn to this particular narrative because it was clear that within it were many glimpses of incredible human resilience and strength — not only the children’s battle to survive in the forest alone but also the way in which Indigenous rescuers and the military were able to overcome their mutual mistrust and fear to unite in a dangerous and epic mission to rescue the children.”
