Hornets apologize for taking back video game console after giving it to young fan during an ‘on-court skit’

The Charlotte Hornets may have misunderstood the purpose of the season of giving.

The team came under fire this week after someone on social media claimed a young fan involved with an on-court skit during Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers was tricked out of receiving a new video game console.

Toward the end of the second quarter, the fan’s letter to Santa was read at the arena. In it, he asked for a PS5. In the video shared online, the team’s mascot can be seen handing over a bag containing the gift.

The elated fan walked off the court with his gift. But, behind the scenes, the team reportedly took the gift back. According to a post online, the PS5 was taken away, and the young fan was instead given a jersey.

The post made its rounds on social media Tuesday, and the Hornets issued an apology.

"During last night's game there was an on-court skit that missed the mark. The skit included bad decision making and poor communication. Simply put, we turned the ball over, and we apologize," the statement, via WCNC, said.

JOEL EMBIID'S SINUS FRACTURE 'NOT NEARLY AS SEVERE' AS PREVIOUS FACIAL INJURIES

"We have reached out to the family and are committed to not only making it right but to exceeding expectations."

The Hornets added that the fan will receive the video game console and a "VIP experience" at another game.

"Our goal is and will remain to elevate the guest experience for every person that enters Spectrum Center and to show our fans how much we appreciate their relentless support."

The next home game for the Hornets will be Monday, Dec. 23, when they host the Houston Rockets.

76ers' Joel Embiid shrugs off missed meetings: 'Things will always get blown out of proportion'

The Philadelphia 76ers' front office bolstered the team's roster by adding Paul George and other key players in the offseason.

The addition of draft pick Jared McCain also contributed to high expectations the Sixers carried into the 2024-25 season.

But the optimism quickly subsided once the regular season tipped off. The Sixers have a disappointing 2-12 record and sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Joel Embiid recently became a topic of conversation when he was suspended after a locker room confrontation with a reporter earlier this month.

The Sixers' starting center has played just four games this season, and he took issue with a recent report that revealed some details about a 76ers team meeting shortly after Philly was defeated by the Miami Heat

"Whoever leaked that is a real piece of s---," Embiid said.

76ERS' PAUL GEORGE DENOUNCES BOOS IN RETURN TO LOS ANGELES: 'IT'S STUPID'

The team meeting came after head coach Nick Nurse's suggestion there was some confusion with the team's goals. Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey also confronted Emiid about showing up late for meetings, saying the 2023 NBA MVP was late "for everything," according to the report.

Maxey also reportedly expressed concern over the negative affect Embiid's tardiness had on the team.

After the Sixers' latest loss Wednesday, Embiid made it clear a wide range of topics were covered during the meeting, but he also acknowledged the need for him to improve.

"We talked about a lot of things," Embiid said. "I don't want to get into detail. But that whole thing, that part of it, took probably 40 seconds. But it's Joel Embiid, so things will always get blown out of proportion. It's whatever, though. I'll take it. I'm the reason for everything, so I guess I'll take the blame for everything.

"There was nothing malicious being said. I like when people are telling me when I'm not doing good and when I need to be better. That part of it (tardiness) probably happened once or twice when I wasn't playing. So, I need to be better. I need to be perfect. I need to be on point, which I'm going to do."

Some positives did come out of the Sixers' 111-117 loss to the Grizzlies earlier this week. The game marked the first time this season Embiid, George and Maxey were on the floor at the same time.

However, George aggravated his knee during the game. A timetable for George's return to action is unclear. The Sixers host the Brooklyn Nets Friday in NBA Cup Group Play.

76ers star Joel Embiid ripped in team meeting for being late to 'everything': report

The big three of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George is 2-11.

The Philadelphia 76ers have had an unimaginable start to their season after making big splashes in signing George and extending Embiid and Maxey's contracts.

But, apparently, they reached a breaking point Monday.

After blowing a double-digit lead to the Miami Heat, coaches and players reportedly held a team meeting in the locker room that lasted about 1½ hours

"A lot was said, a lot was accepted, a lot was aired out," ESPN's Shams Charania said on Tuesday's edition of "The Pat McAfee Show." The meeting included players telling head coach Nick Nurse they needed to be coached harder, and Nurse saying he wanted players more dialed in during practice.

However, the big takeaway was that their superstar, Embiid, was called out. Maxey reportedly "challenged" Embiid to stop being late for "everything."

"There is a trickle-down effect. When you are missing, when you are late to what I was told ‘everything,’ it has an effect on the rest of the locker room," Charania added. "This was the elephant in the room, and Tyrese Maxey addressed it."

Veteran guard Kyle Lowry is the player who reportedly prompted the meeting, and Embiid did not take the criticism lightly. He and Maxey are known to be close and often hold each other accountable.

Embiid has been the face of load management this season, playing in just three games. He also missed three games due to a suspension for shoving a reporter.

The Sixers have been resting Embiid, who said in training camp he probably would not play in both games of back-to-back contests this season.

With their putrid start, Philly owns the worst record in the league and is already 12 games behind the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are 15-0. The Cavs are one of only four teams in the Eastern Conference above .500.
