Army-Navy game draws its most viewers ever recorded after Trump's attendance

The Army-Navy game Saturday was watched by an unprecedented number of viewers.

The Midshipmen pulled off the upset in Landover, Maryland, 31-13, to increase their all-time series lead, 63-55-7, and end a two-game losing streak to the Black Knights.

For the first time since 2020, Donald Trump attended the game, this time as president-elect.

President Biden has not attended the rivalry game since being elected, but he did take in the contest in 2011 and 2012.

Trump took in the game with Vice President-elect JD Vance, Elon Musk, Pete Hegseth, Daniel Penny and others from a luxury suite. And it may be fair to say that many tuned in to get a glimpse of the soon-to-be 47th president.

In fact, with Trump in attendance, the game had its highest viewership on record.

The game drew an average of 9.4 million viewers, the most since at least 1990. Its previous high was 8.45 million in 1992, and this year's figure is a 31% increase over last year's audience of 7.2 million.

It's undoubtedly the most-watched Army-Navy game since CBS took over airing rights in 1996. In fact, it was the most-watched game on CBS this year, behind only the Big Ten title game.

It now ranks as the 11th most-watched college football game this season, ranking ahead of three conference championship games, including the Big 12, and is the most-watched game that did not involve the Big Ten or SEC.

Viewers of the game have increased since the game moved to the week after conference championship weekend in 2009. It is now the lone college game of the day. This year, both teams were ranked for the first time since 1960. This year's game was also the highest-scoring Army-Navy affair since 2011.

Navy got out to a 14-0 lead, and despite Army cutting its deficit to four, the Midshipmen never looked back, scoring a 52-yard touchdown and then finding the end zone again shortly after a fake punt. With the victory, Navy earned the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, having also beaten Air Force earlier this year.

Army had won six of the previous eight meetings after Navy rode a hot streak of winning 16 of 17 meetings. The Midshipmen are 9-3 on the season, while Army fell to 11-2.

Both teams now focus on their respective bowl games. Navy will face Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl, and Army will face Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl.

College football analyst blasts refs over Navy star penalty after crucial TD vs Army

CBS college football analyst Gary Danielson was irate about a controversial third-quarter call during Navy’s stunning win over Army on Saturday.

Midshipmen quarterback Blake Horvath threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Eli Heidenreich to put the team up 21-10 with 6:34 left in the frame. Heidenreich received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty immediately after the play when he spiked the ball near the foot of Army linebacker Elo Modozie.

Danielson said he thought Modozie walked into the spike. CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore agreed with Danielson’s assessment.

"Terrible call. We’ve got warriors out there and they make a call like that. Stay out of the game," Danielson said.

PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP TAKES IN ARMY-NAVY GAME WITH POWERHOUSE POSSE

Army would go down the field and kick a field goal on their next drive. But Navy answered with a Horvath rushing touchdown. The Midshipmen then forced a turnover in the fourth quarter, which led to another field goal, and the game would be pretty much over from there.

Navy won the game 31-13.

Horvath was 4-of-9 passing for 107 yards and two passing touchdowns. He also ran for 204 yards and scored two touchdowns.

"I think they're like us. We want to be significant," Navy head coach Brian Newberry said of the win. "I think we both were this year, and I think because of that maybe there was a little more significance, a little more interest maybe in this game."

Navy moved to 9-3 with the win. The Black Knights fell to 11-2.

Navy pulls off upset over Army with Trump, star-studded group in attendance

History repeated itself in the annual Army-Navy clash.

The Midshipmen are now 63-55-7 all time against the Black Knights with their 31-13 victory Saturday in Landover, Md.

Navy got out to a 14-0 lead, scoring a touchdown on its first drive, then turning an interception into seven more points. Army cut its deficit in half before going into the locker room. A field goal to begin the second half made it a four-point game.

Navy, though, delivered a big blow with a 52-yard touchdown catch and run by running back Eli Heidenreich to regain a 21-10 lead late in the third. After the Black Knights settled for a field goal, they forced a Navy punt — or so they thought.

The Midshipmen, on fourth and 5 from their own side of the field, ran a fake punt, and nose tackle Landon Robinson ran 29 yards for a first down to keep the drive alive. Four plays later, Blake Horvath rushed in for the score, and it was a 28-13 lead for Navy.

Hoping for a miracle, Army quarterback Bryson Daily threw a wild pass on the run that was intercepted, and the Midshipmen iced the game with a field goal to go up three possessions with just under four minutes to go. After another pick and a first down, Navy ran out the clock.

With the victory, Navy earned the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, having also beaten Air Force earlier this year.

The teams participated in the "Honoring the Fallen" tradition by singing each other's alma mater.

President-elect Trump took in the game from a luxury suite, marking his first appearance at the contest since 2020. He was at the game five straight years, beginning in 2016, roughly a month after winning that year’s election. Trump was joined by a star-studded cast that included JD Vance, Elon Musk, Daniel Penny, Mike Johnson, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth.

Army had won six of the previous eight meetings. The Midshipmen are 9-3 on the season, while Army fell to 11-2.

Both teams now focus on their respective bowl games. Navy will face Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl, and Army awaits its Independence Bowl opponent after Marshall dropped out due to nearly 30 players entering the transfer portal.

It was a rare offensive showing on the field, at least for one side, as the under had hit in 18 of the previous 19 seasons. The total, though, was hovering around the 39.5 mark, so over bettors are celebrating.

Horvath finished with 204 yards on 25 carries, two of them resulting in scores, while throwing another pair of touchdowns despite just nine passing attempts.

Next year's edition, the 126th, will be played in Baltimore before heading to East Rutherford, New Jersey, in 2026.

Daniel Penny hailed as a 'hero' alongside Trump and Vance in Army-Navy game suite

Marine veteran Daniel Penny is celebrating his recent acquittal for manslaughter inside a historic college football game suite.

Penny, who was recently found not guilty in the subway chokehold death of homeless man Jordan Neely, joined President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance in a suite at Northwest Stadium in Maryland for the 125th Army-Navy game Saturday. Trump's suite also hosted Elon Musk, Tulsi Gabbard, House Speaker Mike Johnson, Vivek Ramaswamy and Trump's FBI director pick Kash Patel.

Photos of Penny posing alongside Trump and Vance in the suite went viral during the game.

Multiple social media users responded with waves of praise for Penny, hailing the Marine veteran as a hero.

Cryptocurrency influencer Tiffany Fong shared the photo, praising Penny as a hero in a post on X.

"Donald Trump [and] JD Vance know that Daniel Penny is a hero," Fong wrote. Fong shared another photo, where she called all three of the men, "heroes."

Conservative X influencer and podcast host Nick Sortor called for Penny to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the post, and dozens of others agreed with him in X responses.

"Daniel Penny received a HERO’S WELCOME from President Trump and JD Vance at the Army Navy game Much deserved!" Sortor wrote. "I truly hope Trump will give Penny the Presidential Medal of Freedom."

Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., shared the photo with a caption that said, "Common sense reigns again!"

Ramaswamy and his son Arjun took their own photo with Penny and took pride in having contributed to Penny's legal fund.

"Our family contributed to this man’s legal defense fund last year because he was wronged. We don’t regret it. Hope Daniel Penny has a bright future & good life ahead," Ramaswamy wrote.

Author Ashley St. Clair shared the photo with a caption that suggested Penny was on trial for being a White male. Penny's chokehold of Neely, who was Black, ignited a national conversation about race.

"The days of vitriol and persecution against white men simply for being white men are over," St. Clair wrote.

During Penny's trial, prosecutors routinely referred to the Marine veteran as "the White man."

Penny was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide for the subway chokehold death of Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man with schizophrenia who barged onto the train shouting death threats May 1, 2023.

Witnesses testified Neely's threats scared them more than a typical subway outburst would, and they were thankful for Penny's intervention.

Neely had a lengthy criminal record, an active arrest warrant, a history of psychosis and was high on K2, a synthetic form of marijuana that pathologists described as a stimulant.

When jurors declared they had found Penny not guilty of criminally negligent homicide Dec. 9, his side of the courtroom in New York City erupted with cheers. At the same time, the verdict prompted an angry response from Neely's side, including his father, Andre Zachary, who was escorted out of the courthouse along with several Black Lives Matter leaders.

Penny thanked the jurors for their verdict in an interview with Fox News Wednesday.

"I'd like to give them a hug. I'd like to thank them. Yeah, definitely. It takes a lot of courage, especially in this climate in New York City, to stick up for me," he told "The Five" co-host Judge Jeanine Pirro in a preview Wednesday during an exclusive interview airing on Fox Nation.

The Marine veteran said if he faced the same situation on the subway with someone making threats and acting erratically, he would take action again.

"I would not be able to live with myself if I didn't do anything in that situation and someone got hurt," he said. "I would feel guilty for the rest of my life."

Vance was one of the first politicians to express support for Penny in the aftermath of the verdict and said he extended the initial invitation to Penny for the suite Saturday.

"Daniel’s a good guy, and New York’s mob district attorney tried to ruin his life for having a backbone," Vance wrote on X Friday. "I’m grateful he accepted my invitation and hope he’s able to have fun and appreciate how much his fellow citizens admire his courage."

Penny still faces a lawsuit from Zachery, who accuses the 26-year-old of causing his son’s death through "negligence, carelessness and recklessness." Zachery is seeking unspecified damages for assault and battery, according to a copy of the complaint.

President-elect Trump takes in Army-Navy game with powerhouse posse

President-elect Trump took in the Army-Navy football game with a power posse that included his running mate, the world's richest man, a host of cabinet hopefuls and a newly cleared subway hero from New York City.

The soon-to-be 47th president arrived at the 125th edition of the game Saturday at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, less than 15 miles from the White House. Trump was joined in a suite by his running mate, Vice President-elect JD Vance; Speaker of the House Mike Johnson; incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Elon Musk, nominee for Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's choice for director of national intelligence, and Daniel Penny, who was recently acquitted of charges in the death of subway menace Jordan Neely.

Navy won the game, 31-13, behind quarterback Blake Horvath, who passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more. The Midshipmen raised their record to 9-3, while the loss dropped Army to 11-2. Both teams have had strong seasons. Navy will face Oklahoma in the Armed Forces Bowl, and Army is slated to play in the Independence Bowl, although no opponent has been announced since Marshall dropped out.

But as big a story as the game itself was the VIP spectators. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Navy veteran who has been floated as a possible alternate to Hegseth should his confirmation fail, was seen on the sidelines.

During the national anthem, Trump saluted along with the service members in attendance.

Trump attended the annual rivalry game throughout his presidency, first attending in 2016 shortly after winning that year's election. He also was at the game during each year of his presidency, including in 2020 at West Point.

Saturday marked his sixth time at the game since 2016 and his first since 2020. Throughout his presidency, he would be on the field for pregame events, including the coin toss.

For the first time, both programs entered the game with a combined 19 wins (Army is 11-1, while Navy is 8-3).

Penny was acquitted earlier this week in a racially charged trial. He could have faced up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, but in the end was found not guilty by a jury that believed he acted to defend fellow subway riders when he put Neely in a fatal chokehold. He attended as a guest of Vance.

With Army playing in the American Athletic Conference this season, both teams have spent time in the Top 25. This will be their first meeting this season and will be a non-conference game.

Outside of bragging rights for their respective military academies, this year’s game marks the first time since 2017 the winner will have a chance to secure the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, thanks to wins by Army and Navy over Air Force this season. It also marks the first time since 2017 that both teams enter the matchup having clinched spots in bowl games.

Army won its first conference title earlier this month after a win over Tulane in the AAC championship game to improve to 11-1. But that accomplishment pales in comparison to what’s at stake Saturday.

Army-Navy game is 'college football at its purest form' amid NIL era, sponsor's CEO says

NIL is running hotter and heavier than ever before - but there are two teams that are unable to participate.

Of course, those schools are Army and Navy - as USAA CEO Wayne Peacock puts it, it's a "one-way portal" into the academies.

We just saw Bryce Underwood flip his commitment from LSU to Michigan for seven figures - even the potential No. 1 pick of the 2026 NBA Draft in A.J. Dybantsa committed to BYU after reportedly receiving a $5 million offer in NIL money.

Obviously, the players in the academies are unable to go that route if they go to either Army or Navy. But, with the 125th edition of the Army-Navy game set to kick off on Saturday afternoon just outside of the nation's capital, Peacock says that's what makes the annual event that much more special.

"The way I think about this, especially in this age of the portal and NIL, this is college football at its purest form. When these guys are out on the field, they are competing like they are in battle, and they're competing against each other like they're in battle.

BILL BELICHICK SAID HE ALWAYS WANTED TO COACH IN COLLEGE AFTER TAKING UNC JOB: 'DREAM COME TRUE'

"But what's so special, after the game, they're going to come together, march down the respective ends of the stadium, they're going to sing each other's alma mater, and they're going to put on the uniform of the United States. They're going to defend our country, defend our freedom, and that to me is so spectacular about these individuals and about this game."

"There's only a one-way portal into Army and Navy," added Peacock. "But what they find are these student-athletes that want to play, but also want to do something more than just play, and that to me is what makes it so special. But their ability to put competitive teams on the field in this environment also speaks to something that we don't talk about a lot. And that's the power of teamwork and culture."

USAA announced Friday that it will remain the only presenting sponsor of the game through the 2030 edition, a title it has held since 2009.

Army is ranked 22nd in the nation with their 11-1 record - while Navy is on the outside looking in, they are 8-3.

The Black Knights have won six of the last eight meetings after the Midshipmen had taken home 16 of the previous 17.

Navy leads the all-time series, 62-55-7.

Army-Navy set to clash in 125th meeting as President-elect Trump watches alongside key political figures

The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen will face off against one another on Saturday for the 125th rendition of the Army-Navy game, but this year’s matchup is surrounded by a lot of buzz – both because of its attendees and because of what’s at stake.

For the first time ever, both programs enter the game with a combined total of 19 wins. With Army playing in the American Athletic Conference this season, both teams have spent time in the Top 25. This will be their first meeting this season and will be a nonconference game.

Cheering them on will be President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect JD Vance and several other important guests.

Outside of the bragging rights for their respective military academies, this year’s game marks the first time since 2017 that the winner will have a chance to secure the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, thanks to wins by Army and Navy over Air Force this season. It also marks the first time since 2017 that both teams enter the matchup having secured bowl games.

Army won its first conference title earlier this month after a win over Tulane in the AAC championship game, placing a bow on their 11-1 record this season. But that accomplishment pales in comparison to what’s at stake on Saturday.

"It’s a game and a season really all of its own," Army coach Jeff Monken said Tuesday. "We’ve had a good year. You make it a great year by winning this game coming up on Saturday. Frankly, that’s just the way it goes around here."

The feeling is mutual for Navy.

"Oklahoma’s not on our mind right now, because it’s all Army-Navy," linebacker Colin Ramos said of the Midshipmen’s bowl game. "This is our No. 1 goal, and then after that, we’ll have about a week and a half, two weeks — whatever it is — to prepare. Right now, it’s Army-Navy."

With an 8-3 record, Navy had its first winning season since 2019. But head coach Brian Newberry is prepared for what’s ahead, calling this Army program "the most complete, well-rounded Army football team, the best Army football team" he can recall.

Trump brings political excitement to Army-Navy game

President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance attended the annual Army-Navy game in Landover, Maryland, on Saturday, and they brought along some high-profile guests.

In the 125th meeting of the Black Knights and Midshipmen, Trump brought Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, while Vance's guest was Marine veteran Daniel Penny. Also on hand were House Speaker Mike Johnson, incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Trump's director of national intelligence pick, Tulsi Gabbard, and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

While the game was a highly anticipated matchup, the guests brought by Trump and Vance created a pregame buzz.

Penny was found not guilty in the subway chokehold death of Jordan Neely in New York City earlier this week, a decision which was criticized by some commentators on the left and underscored a divide between crime and mental health. Neely had been menacing riders when Penny acted to defend fellow straphangers. Penny faced up to 15 years in prison, but was acquitted of all charges.

DANIEL PENNY FOUND NOT GUILTY IN SUBWAY CHOKEHOLD TRIAL

Hegseth is still courting members of the Senate to secure his nomination for the top defense role, but Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, whoi has been floated as a possible alternative, was also in attendance.

Hegseth’s appearance will mark a very public declaration of support from Trump, as some senators are still holding out on committing to his confirmation. Hegseth, an Army National Guard and former longtime Fox News host, deployed to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and has been the focus of misconduct reports.

Trump's defense secretary nominee has denied allegations that he mistreated women but did reach a financial settlement with an accuser from a 2017 incident to avoid a lawsuit. He has vowed that he won't drink "a drop of alcohol" if confirmed as defense secretary.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Elon Musk were also spotted in Trump's box at the game.

Meanwhile, Vance took a swipe at New York City prosecutors for taking on the case in a post on X confirming Penny’s attendance.

"Daniel’s a good guy, and New York’s mob district attorney tried to ruin his life for having a backbone," Vance wrote. "I’m grateful he accepted my invitation and hope he’s able to have fun and appreciate how much his fellow citizens admire his courage."

Penny, 26, was charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide for the May 2023 subway chokehold death of Neely, a 30-year-old homeless man with schizophrenia who had barged onto the train shouting death threats while high on a type of synthetic marijuana known as K2.

Trump attended the game as president in 2018, 2019 and 2020, while he also appeared as president-elect in 2016.

President Biden has never attended the annual clash as president, although he did appear as vice president.

This season has been a banner year for both football programs, adding buzz to the annual rivalry match. The teams have a combined 19 wins this year and with victories over Air Force, the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy will be awarded to the winner of Saturday’s game.

NFL legend Joe Theismann gives free cars to service members for Army-Navy game

College Football Hall of Famer quarterback Joe Theismann gave two free cars to U.S. military veterans Friday to celebrate Saturday's 125th Army-Navy Game

Theismann, who played against both Army and Navy multiple times during his decorated career at Notre Dame, showed up at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Friday to deliver the gifts.

Fellow former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III joined Theismann, and the duo handed over the keys of two retrofitted vehicles to local active-duty military families.

Theismann presented a 2024 Chevy Malibu to Navy Seaman Matthew Walker and his family, while Griffin gave a 2023 Chevy Equinox to Army Specialist Caleb Dooley and his family.

The gifts were part of the Recycled Rides campaign in partnership with USAA.

Theismann told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview how "special" the giveaway is to him as someone who has great admiration for military members, especially on the eve of a historic anniversary for the Army-Navy game.

"The service members will have transportation which they sorely need," Theismann said.

Theismann says the Army-Navy matchup is his favorite game this year.

"It's a competitive rivalry, it always has been," Theismann said. "When we played the academy, there's never any quit, we managed to run up some scores and put some numbers up, but it didn't matter to the academy. They were there fighting from kickoff to the end of the game."

No. 19 Army (11-1) won the American Athletic Conference championship with a 35-14 victory against Tulane Dec. 6. Navy (8-3) started 6-0 this season.

This year's Army-Navy game will also feature in-person appearances by President-elect Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.

Vance also announced in a post on X that Marine veteran Daniel Penny will be joining him and Trump in their suite at the game. Penny has recently drawn national attention after being acquitted for manslaughter for protecting New York City subway riders from Jordan Neely.

This will also mark Trump’s fifth time attending the Army-Navy game. He first attended in 2016 and appeared three times during his first presidency.

Last week, jurors couldn’t reach a decision on the second-degree manslaughter charge. Prosecutors moved to dismiss it, and the judge allowed the jurors to deliberate on the second charge alone, and they found Penny not guilty on Monday.

Penny is expected to join Trump and Vance at the 125th meeting of the Black Knights and Midshipmen. Sources told Fox News Digital last week that Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida will also be present at the game on Saturday.
