Football community rallies around NFL legend Randy Moss after revealing cancer diagnosis

The football community has rallied around NFL legend Randy Moss after the former wide receiver announced he had been diagnosed with cancer, during an Instagram livestream Friday.

Moss said he had spent six days in the hospital undergoing surgery. The former Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots wide receiver said the doctors had found cancer in his bile duct, "right between the pancreas and the liver."

"I am a cancer survivor," Moss said. "Some trying times, but we made it through."

Moss’s former teammates and teams posted statements on social media in support of the former wide receiver.

"Mental toughness in human form. We’re all with you 81. Love ya bubs," former Patriots teammate Julian Edelman posted.

"Love you Randy. Dominating opponents is what you have always done and you will sure do it again! You got this!" Rob Gronkowski posted.

Moss stepped away from his role as an analyst on ESPN’s "Sunday NFL Countdown" on Dec. 6.

"As soon as I get healthy to get back out with guys, I will be on set. . . . Hopefully, I can be with you guys soon," Moss said.

"My goal is to get back on television with my team."

The Pro Football Hall of Famer played 14 seasons in the NFL and is second in the Vikings' all-time receiving yards with 9,316 yards.

The six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro will turn 48 in February.

Bill Belichick says he spoke with UNC legends, including Michael Jordan and Lawrence Taylor, before taking job

Bill Belichick isn't going to Chapel Hill blindly.

After spending nearly five decades on NFL sidelines, the eight-time Super Bowl champion took his first-ever college coaching job with the Tar Heels.

He was officially introduced Thursday.

Early reports of Belichick's interest in the job were often scoffed at, but it's clear he was interested from the jump.

He was so into the job he had spoken with several of the school's most famed alumni, including Michael Jordan and Lawrence Taylor. Belichick also said he spoke with Julius Peppers.

Jordan starred in Chapel Hill before becoming the greatest basketball player of all time, and Taylor was a mainstay in UNC's defense before he was drafted by the New York Giants and coached by Belichick. The duo won two Super Bowls together with Big Blue.

Peppers, an NFL great, also played basketball for the school.

In typical Belichick fashion, he did not reveal what they spoke about, but he said they were all "very supportive."

BILL BELICHICK SAID HE ALWAYS WANTED TO COACH IN COLLEGE AFTER TAKING UNC JOB: 'DREAM COME TRUE'

"There's been a ton of support," he added, "from ex-players and other UNC alums. This is a great brand and a great support system here. So, I'm excited to spend more time with these people."

It's a five-year deal for Belichick, who added that he did not "come [to Chapel Hill] to leave."

Belichick, 72, interviewed for at least two NFL jobs last offseason after he and the New England Patriots parted ways after 24 seasons and six championships.

Former NFL coach Bruce Arians offers advice to Bill Belichick as North Carolina football coaching rumors swirl

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has spent much of the ongoing NFL season in the media spotlight.

While Belichick interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons in January, the franchise opted against extending an offer to a coach. Belichick did not appear to draw much interest from any other NFL team, but his regular appearances on ESPN's "ManningCast" and the CW's "Inside the NFL" have kept him relatively close to football.

But the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach seems to still be interested in coaching.

During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" earlier this week, Belichick confirmed he had talks with the North Carolina Tar Heels about their head coaching vacancy.

While it remains unclear if Belichick will be on the sideline in Chapel Hill next season, another former NFL coach chimed in on the developing situation.

Bruce Arians, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory in the 2021 Super Bowl, admitted he was "very surprised" his contemporary showed interest in coaching at the collegiate level. Arians also offered Belichick some advice.

TOM BRADY EXPLAINS WHY HIS ANSWER IS 'NO' TO BILL BELICHICK HEADING TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL

"I’m very, very surprised. I thought for sure he’d wait for the NFL hiring process to play out," Arians said during a recent appearance on the "Scoop City" podcast. "There’s some good things in going back to college, but I had no patience with rookies. I damn sure don’t have patience for freshmen."

Arians and Belichick are both 72. Arians stepped away from coaching and moved into a consultant's role with the Bucs in 2022.

"If I'm gonna give Bill one bit of advice, you better bring a lot of patience with you," Arians said. "Dealing with rookies making money, but now freshmen making money? It’s gotta be ridiculous trying to coach those guys."

Arians' coaching career began at the college level. He spent time working for Mississippi State, Alabama and other programs.

If Belichick winds up at UNC or another college program, he will have to carefully navigate name, image and likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal. The NCAA transfer portal opened earlier this week. NIL and the portal have drastically altered the college football landscape over the past couple of years.

Belichick shared some details about the makeup of a college program if he were a head coach.

"If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL," he said. "It would be a professional program — training, nutrition, scheme, coaching and techniques that would transfer to the NFL."

Tom Brady shares heartfelt message for ex-Patriots teammate Randy Moss as he battles health challenge

Randy Moss, the legendary Hall of Fame receiver, shook the football world a bit last week when he said he was stepping away from his duties on ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" to deal with a personal health challenge.

Moss touched on that health challenge on Dec. 1 during the broadcast, where he was seen wearing sunglasses. He said he was "battling something internally," though he didn't get into details.

"(Moss) briefly addressed the matter at the start of the show on Dec. 1. For nearly a decade, Randy has been an invaluable member of the team, consistently elevating Countdown with his insight and passion. He has ESPN’s full support, and we look forward to welcoming back when he is ready," ESPN’s statement said

During FOX NFL Sunday, several of Moss' ex-New England Patriots teammates, including Tom Brady, shared their heartfelt support for Moss.

"One of the all-time great teammates and friends, in touch to this day,' Brady said during FOX's broadcast. "Our heart obviously is with you, our prayers, all our positive energy.  We love you so much, man."

NFL LEGEND RANDY MOSS STEPPING AWAY FROM ESPN FOR ‘EXTENDED TIME’ DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES

Rob Gronkowski added: "We're thinking about you, Randy. We love you, man."

Moss, 47, told ESPN viewers that he has "some great doctors around me," and that "I couldn't miss the show" this past week. He even cracked a joke, calling his sunglasses "Michigan turnover glasses," which got some chuckles out of the panel.

Moss is one of the greatest wide receivers to ever step foot on an NFL field, tallying four All-Pro honors and six Pro Bowls over his 14 years in the league.

He is fourth all-time in receiving yards with 15,292 on 982 receptions, while being the Minnesota Vikings' franchise leader in receiving yards with 9,316 over his eight years with the organization.

Moss will turn 48 in February.

Tom Brady explains why his answer is 'no' to Bill Belichick heading to college football

News of Bill Belichick interviewing for the vacant North Carolina Tar Heels head coach vacancy took the football world by surprise this past week, but one of his former pupils cannot see him actually taking the job.

Tom Brady, alongside his former New England Patriots teammates Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski, discussed Belichick’s interview with UNC during "Fox NFL Sunday," where he was blunt about not believing Belichick would go to college football next season.

"There’s a lot of things he can do, and obviously he’s tremendous, and even showing his personality. But getting out there on the recruiting trail and dealing with all these college kids," Brady said.

The recruiting side of things is what Brady believes Belichick would not want to deal with, as he jokingly made up a scenario of his old coach speaking with a recruit.

"’Listen, do you really want to come here?’" Brady said, acting as Belichick. "’I mean, we don’t really want you anyway, but I guess you could come, we’ll figure out if you play.’"

It was not just Brady who felt Belichick would not translate well to college ball, as Edelman and Gronkowski gave their takes.

BILL BELICHICK INTERVIEWS FOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL JOB AFTER LEGENDARY COACH LEAVES: REPORT

"Can you imagine NIL, and all that nonsense?" Gronkowski said.

Edelman added, "Can you imagine Bill on a couch recruiting an 18-year-old?"

Belichick, after not getting a different head coaching gig in the NFL after he and the Patriots mutually parted ways earlier this year, has been in the sports media space throughout this season.

However, according to Inside Carolina, Belichick interviewed for the job Mack Brown used to hold with the Tar Heels.

Brown announced he would be leaving the program ahead of the team’s final regular-season game against N.C. State

There are already a few NFL coaching vacancies that will need to be filled after this regular season, as the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets and Chicago Bears have all fired their head coaches mid-season. Several others could open up as well, depending on how these final games shake out.

It will be interesting to see where Belichick’s name pops up once the season is over in the NFL, but it appears he might want his first-ever college gig depending on how his talk with the Tar Heels went.

NFL legend Randy Moss stepping away from ESPN for 'extended time' due to health issues

Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss is stepping away from ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown" for an extended time to focus on a personal health challenge, the network said in a statement on Friday.

Moss, 47, revealed last week that he was battling an illness as he addressed why he was wearing glasses.

"I just wanted to let the viewers know that me and my wife and my family are battling something internally. I have some great doctors around me. I couldn’t miss the show. I wanted to be here with you guys," Moss said during last week's ESPN’s "Sunday NFL Countdown."

"I feel great. But if you see me with these ‘Michigan turnover glasses’ that I have on, it’s not being disrespectful because I’m on television. It’s because I’m battling something. I need all the prayer warriors. God bless you all. Thanks for the prayers."

NFL LEGEND RANDY MOSS REVEALS HE'S BATTLING HEALTH ISSUE

The former Minnesota Vikings and New England Patriots star wide receiver did not say what he was specifically dealing with.

Moss worked through the show with the illness last week, as his ESPN co-hosts Mike Greenberg, Rex Ryan, Alex Smith and Tedy Bruschi wore glasses with him.

"It’s beautifully said. All for one and one for all. If he’s wearing glasses, we’re all wearing glasses today," Greenberg said.

Moss played 14 seasons in the NFL and is second in the Vikings' all-time receiving yards with 9,316 yards.

The six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro will turn 48 in February.

Bill Belichick interviews for college football job after legendary coach leaves: report

Bill Belichick could be headed to parts unknown to him.

The 72-year-old spent nearly 50 years on the NFL sidelines, but a new report says he may just be interested in heading to the college ranks.

According to Inside Carolina, the legendary coach has interviewed for the head coaching job at the University of North Carolina.

Belichick would replace another legend in Mack Brown, who owns a 288-155-1 record with UNC, Texas, Tulane and Appalachian State.

Belichick and the New England Patriots parted ways after the 2023 season, which was Belichick's 24th season with the team. He won six Super Bowls while there, and he notched another pair with the New York Giants as their defensive coordinator.

UNC announced that Brown would leave the program ahead of their final regular-season game against N.C. State, a matchup which resulted in a melee following a flag-planting incident by the Wolfpack on Saturday.

BEARS INTERIM HEAD COACH HAS LOST OVER 20 POUNDS AMID TEAM'S COACHING STAFF CHANGES

Belichick's name has swirled around the rumor mill amid recent coaching changes, with several others possibly on the horizon.

He interviewed for openings with both the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers in the offseason, but each went in different directions.

The eight-time Super Bowl champion has since become a media sensation, often making appearances on the "ManningCast" on "Monday Night Football." He was also an analyst during this year's NFL Draft.

This is Belichick's first reported interview since making the NFL rounds in the offseason.

Belichick's father, Steve, coached at Navy, but this would be Belichick's first college gig ever. He became a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts in 1975, and his first head coaching nod came 16 years later when he was tapped as head coach of the Cleveland Browns.

Anthony Richardson, Colts hang on for gritty win over Patriots

The Indianapolis Colts have been through the wringer this season and yet their playoff hopes are still alive.

Anthony Richardson led the Colts on a 19-play, 80-yard drive that lasted more than 5 minutes to score a touchdown with 12 seconds left on a 3-yard pass to Alec Pierce. The Colts decided to attempt the 2-point try instead of kick it for the tie.

Richardson ran the ball in and put Indianapolis up 25-24.

Drake Maye got the offense down the field in those 12 seconds and set up a Joey Slye 68-yard field goal attempt. If Slye hit it, it would have been a record. He was about 2 yards short.

Indianapolis won the game 25-24 and moved to 6-7 on the season.

Richardson was 12-for-24 with 109 passing yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions. He also ran for 58 yards on nine carries. The second-year quarterback found Jonathan Taylor for a score early in the game. Taylor ran for 96 yards on 25 carries. The lone catch was for a touchdown.

Michael Pittman Jr. led the Colts with five catches for 42 yards.

The Patriots took the lead with 8:43 left in the game when Antonio Gibson scored on an 11-yard run. New England went up seven at that point but couldn’t keep Indy out of the end zone.

Maye had a touchdown pass to Austin Hooper in the second quarter. He was 24-of-30 with 238 passing yards and an interception. Gibson had 62 yards on the ground. Hunter Henry led New England with seven catches for 75 yards. Hooper had four catches for 42 yards.

New England fell to 3-10 as the season has slipped away.

Indianapolis is still in the race for a playoff spot.

Tom Brady says son tried to attend Super Bowl afterparty that featured Snoop Dogg, 'girls dancing'

After Tom Brady won his sixth Super Bowl, further cementing himself as the GOAT, the party was on.

Brady's New England Patriots defeated the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta in Super Bowl LIII, but he was not going to bed.

However, his eldest son, Jack, wanted to tag along.

Brady was featured on two-time U.S. Open champ Bryson DeChambeau's "Breaking 50" series on YouTube, where he told a story about how Jack, 10 years old at the time, tried to swing his way into the Super Bowl victory afterparty that certainly was not suitable for his age.

"We had one with my son Jack — in 2018, we beat the Rams in the Super Bowl in Atlanta, and Snoop Dogg was performing at the afterparty. He's like ‘Dad, I want to go to the party,’" Brady told DeChambeau.

STEPHEN A SMITH CLAIMS TRUMP RAN FOR PRESIDENT TO 'GET BACK' AT NFL OWNERS AFTER FAILED BILLS BID

"It's like 1 a.m. There's girls dancing on — I'm like, ‘Jack.’ He's like ‘Dad.’ Shaking his head away. It was like I'm the worst parent in the world."

The Super Bowl was low-scoring, being knotted at three heading into the fourth quarter. But, Brady found old reliable Rob Gronkowski for a 29-yard gain, and Sony Michel cleaned up the mess with a two-yard score. It was the first, and only, touchdown of the game, and the Pats never looked back, winning the game, 13-3.

Brady went 21-for-35 for 262 yards in the victory. It was his third consecutive Super Bowl appearance, having split the previous two.
