Dodgers, Blake Snell agree to $182 million deal for MLB offseason's first big splash: reports

The Los Angeles Dodgers are continuing their spending spree from last year, even after winning the World Series.

The Dodgers went further into their unlimited pockets and inked Blake Snell to a five-year deal worth $182 million, according to multiple reports.

Some other reports also say, naturally, that the deal is deferred.

The Dodgers forked up over $1 billion in contracts last year, and they have now put down the first nine-figure deal in this offseason, less than one month after winning the Fall Classic.

Snell joined the San Francisco Giants last offseason on a two-year deal which included an opt-out after his Cy Young Award-winning 2023 campaign. But teams were scared to commit to him, leaving him a free agent until March.

His season got off to a rough start, as he had a 9.51 ERA in his first six starts - he also caught an IL stint in that frame. But, in his final 14 outings, he pitched to a miniscule 1.23 ERA, striking out 114 batters in 80.1 innings. Understandably so, the Dodgers like what they see out of the lefty.

MLB SUPERSTAR JUAN SOTO TROLLS FANS WITH 'ANNOUNCEMENT YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR'

Los Angeles figures to get Shohei Ohtani back in the rotation, and it remains to be seen the fates of Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler - the former is more likely to stay in L.A. and stay a career Dodger, if he doesn't retire.

But, they also will have Tyler Glasnow back, and they are the favorites to land Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, just as they did last year with Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Snell has become one of the more under-appreciated arms in baseball, likely due to his lack to go deep in games. He pitched a no-hitter in 2024, yet that had been the first time he had ever recorded an out in the eighth inning in his career.

His 11.2 K/9 is the best in MLB history, and his career ERA is a 3.19 - although he only has one All-Star nod, he is lowkey on at least a borderline Hall of Fame trajectory.

Snell turns 32 next week, so perhaps the Dodgers are taking some sort of risk - but it's pretty apparent they can outspend any possible mistake they make.

The first big splash goes to the Dodgers…and they probably are not done.

Juan Soto has offers from 5 teams as bidding for superstar outfielder begins: reports

Let the bidding war for Juan Soto begin.

Five teams have offers on the table for the superstar outfielder, according to multiple reports.

Those five teams are the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Those contracts were made late last week, according to the report. The next step in the process will be negotiations between the teams and Soto’s agent, Scott Boras.

Soto, 26, is reportedly believed to be seeking a 15-year contract that is worth more than Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal. Ohtani’s deal is 10 years, and he deferred the majority of his contract, whereas Soto apparently is not interested in deferring money.

The four-time All Star is coming off the best season of his already remarkable career, batting .288 while slugging a career-high 41 home runs, finishing third in AL MVP voting while batting in front of the MVP in Aaron Judge.

During the Yankees' run to the World Series, Soto was even better, hitting .327 while having an on base percentage of .469 while hitting four home runs.

The Blue Jays tried to trade for Soto last offseason but could not get a deal done with the San Diego Padres. The Blue Jays also tried to sign Ohtani but fell short in their pursuit of adding a superstar.

AARON JUDGE DOESN'T CARE IF JUAN SOTO GETS BIGGER CONTRACT FROM YANKEES: 'IT AIN'T MY MONEY'

Some are questioning whether the Dodgers can afford to sign Soto after handing out over $1 billion dollars of total money in contracts last offseason, but with Ohtani deferring a lot of his contract, they have enough money to at least make an offer.

The Red Sox met with Soto for three hours in California in their hopes of luring the five-time Silver Slugger away from their bitter rival, according to MLB.com.

The Mets have the richest owner in the sport in Steve Cohen and may need every penny they can muster to steer Soto away from the Bronx and over to Queens, where he and star shortstop Francisco Lindor would form a dynamic duo atop the lineup.

Soto met with the Yankees last Monday, when the team sent owner Hal Steinbrenner, team president Randy Levine, general manager Brian Cashman, special assistant to the general manager Omar Minaya and manager Aaron Boone to California, according to NJ.com.

Soto posted a video on Instagram on Tuesday with the caption "The announcement you’ve been waiting for (eyes emoji)," teasing fans about his free agency, but instead announced a brand deal with Celsius.

"What, you were expecting a different announcement?" Soto said with a smile at the end of the video.

Soto is expected to sign with a team during MLB’s winter meetings, which take place Dec. 9-12.

Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani named unanimous MVPs after historic seasons

To nobody’s surprise, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani were named the AL and NL MVPs Thursday, each receiving all 30 first-place votes.

He may not have broken his single-season home run record he set during his 2022 MVP season, but the New York Yankees captain was once again dominant at the plate to receive his second career nod as the MVP in the American League.

Judge beat out Juan Soto, who he hopes to play with again in 2025 in pinstripes, and Kansas City Royals phenom Bobby Witt Jr., who received all 30 second-place votes.

Judge led the league in homers for the third time in his career, launching 58 long balls while posting league highs in WAR (10.8), RBIs (144), slugging percentage (.701), on-base percentage (.458) and OPS+ (223).

While Soto’s production helped the Yankees reach the World Series alongside Judge, Witt owned the league’s best batting average at .332, while hitting 32 homers with 109 RBIs. Soto had 41 homers and 109 RBIs.

Judge’s postseason production was much different, but this is a regular-season award.

The slugger had trouble finding a rhythm despite the Yankees reaching the World Series. He slashed .184/.344/.408 with three homers and nine RBIs over 14 games.

Ohtani inked a record-shattering $700 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the offseason and underwent elbow surgery prior to the start of the 2024 campaign, forcing him off the mound the entire season. At the start of the season, he found himself in a gambling scandal in which millions had been smuggled from him by his interpreter to pay off betting debts. It was eventually determined Ohtani did not know about the gambling, nor did he bet himself.

CHRIS SALE, TARIK SKUBAL EARN FIRST CAREER CY YOUNG AWARDS

Fans wondered if he would be able to have an MVP-type season strictly as a DH.

The Dodgers superstar became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season. The home run ball that made history sold for a record $4.39 million. His 134 runs scored and 411 total bases were the most in the majors, and he led the National League in home runs (54), RBIs (130), on-base percentage (.390), slugging percentage (646) and a 9.2 bWAR.

His .310 average in the NL was second behind only Luis Arráez's .314, and his 59 stolen bases trailed only Elly De La Cruz, who swiped five more bags.

Ohtani won the AL MVP in 2021 and 2023 as a member of the crosstown Angels while finishing second to Judge in 2022. The Yankees outfielder hit 62 home runs that season, setting a new American League record. Francisco Lindor and Ketel Marte finished in second and third, respectively.

Ohtani becomes the 12th player to win the MVP Award three times.

Safe to say the contract is off to a nice start.

Judge and Ohtani faced off in the World Series, and Ohtani came away with his first World Series title. It was the first time two eventual MVPs faced off in a World Series since 2012, when Buster Posey’s Giants defeated Miguel Cabrera and the Tigers.
