‘American Fiction’ (2023)

Not only does this movie have “American” in the title, it’s a great supplemental entertainment if you like spending the 4th on the beach with a great book. (American Fiction is based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure.) Jeffrey Wright plays Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a Black writer and professor who grows frustrated with stereotypical “Black” books — many of which he feels pander to stereotypes — flooding the market. As a joke, he writes the most cliched, stereotypical book he can think of, only to have it become a bestseller.

At the same time, Monk reckons with the problems in his estranged family by cleaning out his mother’s old beach house. It’s a darkly comedic movie about race and class in American culture that won a well-deserved Oscar for best adapted screenplay. The excellent supporting cast includes Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae, who add both depth and humor to the film.

‘Challengers’ (2024)

If summer sports are your jam and you plan to spend the 4th watching Wimbledon, we suggest Challengers as your weekend movie. This sizzling dramedy from Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a promising and dedicated tennis player who forms a long-standing love triangle with two best friends.

The movie examines Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor) and their complicated relationships with tennis, Tashi and each other. David Beckham is commemorating a special milestone in his relationship with wife Victoria Beckham.

Posting via Instagram on Friday, July 4, the soccer star, 50, shared a carousel of photos of his relationship journey with the fashion designer as he celebrated their 26th anniversary.

Among the images shared by David were photos from the couple’s wedding day, photos of the former Spice Girl cozying up to their children in their younger years as well as various snaps of the couple together over the decades. (The couple met in 1997 and wed two years later before renewing their vows in 2006.)

“26 years today you said YES to me Happy Anniversary and thank you for giving me our beautiful children and building the life that we have together I love you Lady Beckham ,” David gushed in the caption, addressing Victoria with the new title she obtained when the athlete received a knighthood in June.

Although David tagged Brooklyn in the post that shared his gratitude for his children, there have been ongoing reports of a family rift between the Beckham family and Brooklyn and his wife, Nicola Peltz Beckham.

Brooklyn and Nicola skipped David’s 50th birthday celebrations in May, and an insider exclusively told Us Weekly that the young couple have “not been in touch” with his parents since then.

“There hasn’t been any sort of resolution from either side,” the source told Us, adding that David and Victoria have also not reached out.

For Father’s Day, David included Brooklyn as well as his other children in a post to mark the occasion.

Sophia Hutchins, Caitlyn Jenner‘s longtime friend and manager, has reportedly died following an ATV accident. She was 29.

According to a TMZ report published on Thursday, July 3, Hutchins died following a fatal incident that occurred near Jenner’s home and was pronounced dead on Wednesday morning in Malibu, California.

The outlet reported that Hutchins had been riding an ATV near Jenner’s home when it struck the bumper of a moving car. The impact reportedly forced the ATV and Hutchins 350 feet into a ravine. Hutchins was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Two people in the car that collided with Hutchins were unharmed, according to TMZ. It is unclear whether Jenner was present when the incident occurred.

Us Weekly has reached out to Jenner for comment.

Caitlyn Jenner Says She’ll ‘Never Have a Relationship in the Future’

Jenner and Hutchins met in 2015 in a pivotal year for the Olympian: the year that Caitlyn and Kris Jenner’s divorce was finalized and Caitlyn publicly announced her transition.

Hutchins, who was a transgender woman, appeared on several episodes of the E! docuseries I Am Cait and also managed Jenner’s business affairs and engagements. The pair also often walked red carpets together.

Due to their close bond, rumors swirled that the pair’s relationship was romantic in nature, but Hutchins told The New York Times in December 2019 that they were “never romantically involved.”

Hutchins added that speculation began to swirl “because we weren’t addressing [the rumors].”

For her part, Jenner spoke highly of Hutchins in a statement made to The New York Times, telling the outlet Hutchins “has been my best friend, family and confidant. She is one of the top minds in her field. Her value in my life is undeniable. The sky is the limit with her entrepreneurial spirit.”

Ringo Starr has strong opinions about how he’ll be portrayed in the four upcoming Beatles biopics.

The musician, 84, told The New York Times on Wednesday, July 2, that he spent two days with the director, Sam Mendes, and offered “extensive notes” on the script.

Starr noted that he had feedback surrounding his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigrett, explaining that the original script didn’t necessarily showcase how they acted in reality.

“He had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,” Starr told the outlet. “That’s not how we were. I’d say, ‘We would never do that.'”

The former couple married in 1965 and had three children together — Zak, 59, Jason, 57, and Lee, 54, — before divorcing in 1975.

In March, it was officially confirmed that actors Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan, Harris Dickinson and Joseph Quinn are on board to portray the four members of The Beatles in Mendes’ quartet of movies.

Mescal will play Paul McCartney, Dickinson will play John Lennon, Keoghan is set to play Starr and Quinn will play George Harrison. (Lennon was murdered at age 40 in 1980, while Harrison died of cancer at age 58 in 2001.)

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in May, Keoghan, 32, revealed what it was like to meet Starr as he gears up to portray him.

The actor told host Jimmy Kimmel that he met Starr at his home, and during the talk show, he divulged how nervous he was during the meeting.

The gang all rallies behind LTW at the funeral in New Jersey, including Aidan (John Corbett), who came from Virginia to surprise Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) — more on that later.

Despite LTW’s requests otherwise, Lucille puts a theatrical spin on the memorial, which begins with a song from Pippin. LTW was afforded just three minutes to speak in her father’s honor, bringing Herbert up on stage with her for support.

“I’d like to thank everyone for being here for my father today. … It seems as if my father was always there for this theater that he loved so much, and all of you. He was always there for my family, for me,” she says. “And I just wasn’t there for him in the end. He left before I got there. I wasn’t there.”

Outside of the theater, Herbert’s mother offers some words of wisdom to LTW, noting, “If you’re not by your loved one’s side when they pass, it means that their spirit doesn’t want you there. They want you to remember them the way that they were, not in their final hour.”

Back to Carrie and Aidan. In the aftermath of Carrie’s disastrous visit to Virginia, Aidan makes good on his promise to use the key she gave him to their Gramercy Park home — sort of. Attempting a romantic gesture, Aidan tosses pebbles at Carrie’s window but accidentally smashes it. He vows to get it fixed, but Carrie explains that the historic glass is irreplaceable.

“Why is nothing going my way?” Aidan wonders before telling Carrie about the latest struggle with Wyatt, his youngest son. “Wyatt wouldn’t get on the f***ing airplane [for his wilderness program]. He changed his mind at the gate. We were like, ‘It’s only a week. You’re going.’ And then the whole way home, Kathy’s just sitting in the car in silence and we pull up to the farm and she looks at me right in my face and says, ‘What did we do that was so bad we had to send our kid to the Grand Tetons?’ And she’s crying.”

Aidan tries to get the perfect pane of glass to replace the broken window, but nothing measures up. He bemoans that he “ruined” everything before dropping an even bigger bombshell: He slept with his ex-wife.

“After the airport, she was just so upset, I mean, we both were. I guess we were just trying to comfort each other. It just happened. And it was a mistake, we both said so. It will never, ever happen again,” he tells Carrie.

Even more surprising than the revelation was Carrie’s reaction to it. “I kind of understand. Or I don’t know, maybe I’m in shock,” she says. “No, I do. I understand how that could happen.”

Aidan apologizes for betraying Carrie. “We agreed to wait for each other and I slept with someone else,” he explains, confused by her response.

“Well, I didn’t agree to that,” Carrie replies. “[I agreed] that I would be here waiting until you could be with me. … You expected me not to sleep with anyone else for five years? That’s what you agreed to and even you couldn’t do it.”

Aidan breaks down, but Carrie remains calm. “Oh, my God, this is so male. Or medieval, I don’t know. My mind is just racing,” she says. “Sleeping with Kathy because you were upset, I understand. I’m just having a harder time understanding why we have not had this discussion until now. … I don’t want to sleep with other people. I want to sleep with you. And I still want that.”

The couple attempts to move forward, but tension surfaces once again when Aidan meets Carrie’s neighbor, Duncan (Jonathan Cake), who stops by to drop off a chapter of his next biography. Aidan leaves, putting the manuscript on the table for Carrie.

Rihanna and ASAP Rocky‘s son RZA is nurturing his foreign language skills at an early age — or at least trying to!

The pregnant “Umbrella” singer took to Instagram on Thursday, July 3, to share several images of her two sons, RZA, 3, and Riot, 23 months, as they embarked on a family road trip.

In the photos, RZA was in the backseat holding a French language workbook that is designed for children aged 5 and 6. RZA’s face was obscured by the book, while brother Riot could be seen relaxing with a pacifier in his mouth.

“They so over me on this lil road trip,” Rihanna, 37, captioned the post. For his part, Rocky, 36, pointed out RZA’s workbook, commenting, “RZA man learning French.” He added three crying laughing emojis alongside the comment.

Rihanna and Rocky, who started dating in 2021 after being friends for years, are expecting their third baby. They revealed the news at the Met Gala in May.

“It feels amazing, you know,” Rocky told the Associated Press of Rihanna’s pregnancy at the time. “It’s time that we show the people what we was cooking up. And I’m glad everybody’s happy for us ’cause we definitely happy, you know.”

A juror in the Sean “Diddy” Combs trial is breaking their silence after the trial has come to an end.

“We spent over two days deliberating,” the juror, who opted to remain nameless, said in a statement to ABC News on Thursday, July 3. “Our decision was based solely on the evidence presented and how the law is stated.”

The juror added that the notion that Diddy’s celebrity status influenced their decision-making was “highly insulting and belittling to the jury and the deliberation process.” The jury consisted of 12 people, which included eight men and four women.

“We would have treated any defendant in the same manner regardless of who they are. I have nothing else to say,” the statement concluded.

How Diddy Reacted After Verdict Was Reached in Sex Trafficking Trial

Diddy, 55, was on trial following his September 2024 arrest. He was charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. The disgraced music mogul pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied all of the allegations against him.

“We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Diddy’s attorney Marc Agnifilo said in a statement at the time. “He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”

Diddy was held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn ahead of the trial, which began in May. His four requests for bail were denied by Judge Arun Subramanian.

After weeks of testimony, the jury deliberated for days. On Wednesday, July 2, news broke that Diddy was acquitted on racketeering and sex trafficking charges but was found guilty on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Each count carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Following the trial’s outcome, Diddy’s lawyer asked for the immediate release of the rapper. Agnifilo proposed that Diddy would return to his Miami Beach home on Star Island, pay $1 million bail and surrender his passport.

However, Judge Subramanian ruled that Diddy will remain behind bars until his sentencing, which is scheduled for October 3.

After leaving court on Wednesday, Diddy’s lawyers held a press conference outside the New York City building. Agnifilo shared that while the outcome was a “great victory,” they are “not nearly done fighting.”

“Great Scott!” Back to the Future debuted in theaters in July 1985 — and has been a major pop culture staple ever since.

Michael J. Fox stars as teenager Marty McFly, who travels back in time from 1985 to 1955 with eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and meets his parents as high school students. Marty gets involved with his parents’ younger selves, running the risk of altering his future forever and narrowly escaping back to his own timeline before it’s too late.

The quirky action comedy spent nearly three months as the No. 1 movie in America and scored countless nominations, including Best Original Screenplay at the 1986 Academy Awards. Fans went wild for the film, which spawned two highly successful sequels in 1989 and 1990. While its legacy in the entertainment industry is undeniable, the movie had an even bigger impact on its stars than on its generations of fans.

“I didn’t think about having a film career,” Fox said during a 2001 interview for the Archive of American Television. “There was a silliness to the role that I think they kind of pictured me for. … Basically within a week, I was doing both jobs. I’d do Family Ties in the daytime and I’d do Back to the Future at night, I was working 18, 19, 20 hours. … Then all of a sudden it was a huge hit.”

Thanks to Back to the Future, Fox’s career reached completely new heights. More than 30 years later, the cast of the beloved movie still look back at their time filming it as fondly as ever. Fox and his costars reminisced on the project during a remote reunion hosted by superfan Josh Gad in May 2020 to celebrate the movie’s upcoming milestone anniversary.

“I didn’t really have any idea that this movie would still have people that want to talk about it. That’s so incredible,” actress Lea Thompson said at the time, before playfully recreating one of her most iconic scenes with Fox and Gad, who stood in for Crispin Glover.

Jenna Davis is still getting used to being one of the most recognizable voices in horror.

Davis, 21, became the now-iconic voice of M3GAN in the 2023 film. Now, she’s back for M3GAN 2.0, a role that the actress said was a “difficult but fun task.”

“When I got introduced to M3GAN and the fact that she was a new robot, but she had sass and humor, I thought, ‘How could I make her my own and make her special?’” Davis exclusively told Us Weekly of wanting to make the character feel memorable.

Davis did, after all, craft how M3GAN would sound from the floor up — literally. “I auditioned for the role in my bedroom closet on my floor,” she shared with Us. She explained that the audition was highly confidential and admitted she didn’t initially know what role she was auditioning for. “I didn’t know what she looked like or anything. So I just kind of gave it my best shot.”

Now, the M3GAN voice has become second nature — and it’s one of her favorite ways to scare people. “Whenever I get to do marketing for Megan, it’s very fun because [my costars are] not used to being in the room with me,” Davis said with a laugh, explaining that all of the voice work for the character took place in a vocal booth. “They can just see how fast I can turn her on. So it’s really fun to scare people like that!”

The success of M3GAN 2.0 has been a dream come true for the Texas native, who was initially hesitant about how horror comedy would be received. “It was definitely nerve wracking, especially introducing a new villain,” she said “You’re dealing with a lot of other popular villains out there and there’s a lot of icons, and now people are calling her an icon, which is so mind boggling.”

Davis told Us that she was asked to bring a whole a different side of M3GAN in this sequel. “Her sass has not left the building. It’s very present. And that is just so fun for me as an actress to be able to play with,” she said. “I think viewers are gonna be really shocked when they sit inside the theater and watch it.”

But with all the success comes negative feedback at times, which Davis is learning to take in stride. She’s using her career as a musician to navigate all the backlash — one song at a time. The singer released her debut album, Where Did That Girl Go?, last month, which includes the hit single “On A Budget.” Davis told Us that the song, which was initially cowritten by Kelsea Ballerini, serves as her sassy response to haters and internet trolls.

A few years ago, a video Davis made doing a tongue twister went viral, and while the video garnered millions of views on social media, it also earned her a fair amount of hate comments. “I had never received so much hate in my life, and it was just a time in my life that I just learned a lot from.”

That’s where “On a Budget” came in. “When I heard that song, my team basically pitched it to me because they thought it would be a good fit because I was an online meme called ‘Penny Nickel Dime.’ And I had told them that I had always wanted to have a song about clapping back to haters,” Davis explained, noting that the track acts as a letter to Davis’s younger self. She confessed that the message was perfect for what she wanted to say at the time.

While the multi-hyphenate prefers to write her own songs, this one just happened to be the perfect match. “It was quite ironic because it was a clap back song to haters, but it was in the terms of money and that was what my meme was about,” she told Us.

“I love the song because it really resonates with me. And even though I didn’t write it, Kelsey and Shane wanted me to have the song, which is so gracious of them. It felt like just a connection.”

With songs like “Messy,” “Miss Wannabe” and “Actor,” Davis’s debut album offers listeners a look at two sides of her — sweet and salty. “I like to call it sweet and salty, because it has both,” she told Us. “I think there’s something for everybody on the project, whether that’s really happy experiences or not so happy experiences, and it’s just very vulnerable.”

The singer invited 30 of her biggest Los Angeles-based fans to a top-secret listening party on Wednesday, July 2, where she debuted six new songs — and Us Weekly has the exclusive details.

“Outreach to fans started on Tuesday, but it was all kept a surprise as to what was happening until they were in the room with Jennifer,” an insider shares.

Lopez, 55, played five upbeat tracks, “Up All Night,” “Regular,” “Free,” “Save Me Tonight” and “Birthday,” and one ballad, “Wreckage of You,” all of which will appear on the setlist for her upcoming international tour alongside greatest hits and fan favorites, including 2001’s “Play.”

“‘Wreckage of You’ is a pop ballad that she told us she cowrote and recorded two weeks ago,” attendee Edgardo Luis Rivera tells Us. “She said she was lying in bed after a long day of tour rehearsals when the idea of the song came to her. She mentioned how last year was a very difficult time for her both personally and professionally. She had to cancel her tour and really focus on herself. Fast-forward to one year later, and she feels better and stronger than ever, so she wanted to write a song about coming out of a bad situation much stronger.”

Lopez, who also divorced Ben Affleck last year, “kept thinking of the word ‘wreck’ because it means destruction, but she wasn’t destroyed,” Rivera shares. “In fact, the lyrics of the song are, ‘I’m stronger after the wreckage of you.'”

A second partygoer tells Us that “Wreckage of You” is a “very emotional, empowering song about walking away from a relationship and coming out a stronger person.”

The other five tunes are “fun, more Jennifer of old in terms of music style,” the first insider says, noting that everyone in the room went “nuts” for “Birthday” in particular. “They’re really good songs. They’ve got a real vibe to them.”

Lopez is set to kick off her Up All Night tour next Tuesday, July 8, in Spain before taking it to countries including Italy, Turkey, Poland, Egypt and Kazakhstan. Her Vegas residency of the same name debuts on December 30 at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

Those who want to hear Lopez’s new songs may have to purchase tickets, though, as Rivera tells Us the Grammy nominee admitted to the crowd at Wednesday’s event that she “didn’t know yet how or if she would release them.”

“She feels very free right now,” he explains, “and on this summer tour, she wants to perform some new material that she’s been working on because a lot of these new songs express how she feels.”

Lizzo is pulling back the curtain on her recent weight loss journey, revealing how she’s achieved her results.

The singer, 37, penned an “appreciation post” on Thursday, July 3, to Flávia Lanini, a lymphatic drainage specialist, who she’s been working with in coordination with health and fitness experts to change her physique.

“The photo on the left is my first time getting [a] lymphatic massage from Flavia, and the right is the most recent!” Lizzo captioned a before-and-after comparison photo via Instagram.

While the Grammy winner attributes part of slimdown to Laini’s massages, she told her followers the rest is hard work on her part. (Lymphatic massages stimulate the flow of lymphatic fluid in the body, removing fluid from swollen tissues as well as waste and toxins, according to Cleveland Clinic.)

“In light of all these magazines and blogs wanting me to be on ozempic soooo bad — here’s the truth!” Lizzo declared. “I work my ass off, training 3x a week, daily sauna & cardio, adding animal protein back into my diet, hiring a chef who helps me meal prep and keeps track of what I put into my body in a calorie deficit, cutting out sugary Starbucks & full fat sodas & potato chips.”

She explained, “I quit drinking for the longest … (but I’m drinking again cus I earned it!) … I play pickleball and hike and walk on the beach and move my body and dance and drink water.”

Lizzo noted, “I detox! Once a month! I also get holistic body work done, wood therapy, and lymphatic massage.”

No matter what the public thinks about her health journey, Lizzo concluded, “I’m so happy and proud of what I’ve done and no one can take that away from me. .”

Lizzo has lost a significant amount of weight loss since January 2023, and she’s taken her fans along for the ride.

“I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” Lizzo told The New York Times in an April 2024 profile. “I don’t really see it because if anyone who’s on a natural weight-loss journey knows, losing weight is actually the slowest thing in the world and you don’t really notice it until you notice it. Also, the scale’s not really moving. But anyway, that doesn’t matter. I’m super proud of my current lifestyle.”

The “About Damn Time” singer added: “I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day. The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day. There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive.”

As her journey unfolded, Lizzo was accused of using weight loss drugs like Ozempic, which she denied. “When you finally get Ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she clapped back in a cheeky September 2024 Instagram post.

In January, Lizzo revealed that she reached her “weight release goal” after working towards it since January 2023.

“I haven’t seen this number since 2014!” she celebrated via social media, sharing that she dropped both 10.5 on her BMI and 16 percent body fat.

Jax Taylor is ready to tackle the biggest rumors surrounding his reality.

On the Thursday, July 3, episode of his “In the Mind of Jax Taylor” podcast, The Valley star dedicated an entire show to answering burning questions from listeners.

Joined by his publicist Lori Krebs, Taylor, 45, set the record straight on several innocent topics.

For starters, he doesn’t regret getting veneers from Dr. Tyler Hales, and he isn’t the man behind the Justice 4 Jax X account.

According to the Vanderpump Rules alum, November 27, 2024, is the day he stopped drinking and using any substances. Ever since then, he has established some rules when hanging around alcohol.

“The rules are that I usually don’t stay more than an hour. If my friends are out drinking, I usually don’t stay more than an hour,” he said. “When people have been hitting their third drinks, it’s very annoying to be around those people. … I just don’t want to be around it.”

Instead of going out to a bar, Taylor prefers spending quality time in the gym where he can lift nearly 300 pounds.

Who Can Speak to Jax Taylor’s Progress?

Ever since The Valley wrapped filming season 2, Taylor said he has been trying to avoid any and all drama with the cast.

While some costars have been asked to comment on Taylor’s progress since he sought treatment for his mental health, the Bravo star said Tom Schwartz is the best to speak about any changes.

“The only person who has seen me consistently is Tom,” Taylor said. “As far as him and I hanging out, he’s always like, ‘You’re so much calmer. You’re so much more alert.’ He always gives me a lot of props of how I’ve been handling all of this because it is a lot. I haven’t been around everybody so how would anybody know?”

While recent episodes of The Valley show Taylor fighting to see his 4-year-old son Cruz, things have improved since filming wrapped.

“I see Cruz a lot, probably between two and four times a week,” he claimed. “There’s no full custody thing. That never happened. Brittany and I have different schedules.”

“Coparenting right now is going as good as it can be,” Taylor revealed on the podcast. “Could it be better? Sure. Could it be worse? Absolutely. I can’t complain about it. I think it’s going pretty well.”

Although both parties have already denied any and all dating rumors, Taylor also confirmed that his two former Vanderpump Rules costars are not a romantic item.

“Lala would eat him to death,” Taylor joked in response to the rumors.

Taylor also wanted to set the record straight that he has never hooked up with Kent, 34.
