Before Sunrise is back in cinemas – and, 30 years on, it’s far sadder than it used to be
Richard Linklater’s rapturous 1995 romance about Interrailing strangers – played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy – once felt uncomplicated and joyous. Revisiting it, though, feels almost heart-piercing, while only further illuminating the skill of a filmmaker fixated on the passing of time, writes Xan Brooks
