Gene Hackman’s Will Leaves $80 Million to Late Wife Betsy Arakawa
Details about the late Gene Hackman’s will have been revealed, but it seems things are still up in the air.
Us Weekly can confirm that Hackman left his entire estate to late wife and successor trustee, Betsy Arakawa, whose death preceded his by one week. (Daily Mail was first to report the news on Thursday, March 13, claiming Hackman left behind an $80 million fortune.)
Documents obtain by Us confirm that the actor’s will hadn’t been updated since June 2005.
Some reports have speculated that, due to Arakawa’s death, the money could be passed on to his three children: Christopher, 65, Elizabeth, 62, and Leslie, 58, whom he shared with late ex-wife Faye Maltese. They were not listed in the will. (The Daily Mail reported that Christopher has since hired an estate attorney.)
Medical Examiner: Gene Hackman Might Not Have Known Wife Betsy Had Died
Us Weekly confirmed on February 27 that Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 64, were found dead at their Santa Fe home. After nearly one week of unanswered questions about the nature of their deaths, chief medical examiner for New Mexico Dr. Heather Jarrell determined the respective causes.

“The cause of death for Mrs. Hackman is hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The cause of death is natural,” Dr. Jarrell said. It’s believed that she died on the evening of February 11.
Authorities believe that Hackman died a week later, on February 18, due to hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer’s disease as a significant contributing factor.

Hackman’s estate has since reportedly filed a legal petition to keep sensitive images regarding the actor and his wife’s death investigation out of the public eye.
“A preliminary injunction is necessary to protect the estates of Mr. Hackman and Ms. Arakawa-Hackman’s right to privacy,” the document, which was filed on March 11, read.
Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa’s Relationship Timeline
Prior to their deaths, Hackman and Arakawa “placed significant value on their privacy and took affirmative, vigilant steps to safeguard their privacy,” the document stated. Their estate is asking the same courtesy be placed on the details regarding their deaths, especially when it comes to photos and video, including body-cam footage.
Amanda Lavin, the legal director at the nonprofit New Mexico Foundation for Open Government, released a statement in the wake of the petition filed by Hackman’s estate. She argued that it could impact public accountability.
“I do think it does infringe on transparency if the court were to prohibit release of all the investigation records, including the autopsies,” she told the Associated Press. “The whole idea of those records being available is to ensure accountability in the way those investigations are done.”

Why Did The Valley’s Zack Call Out 'VPR' Stars Who Unfollowed James Kennedy?
Zack Wickham has heard about several Vanderpump Rules alums unfollowing James Kennedy after his recent drama — but The Valley star wants to know what took people so long to publicly cut ties.
“I find it s—ty that the final straw for you all to unfollow him was when he posted a picture with problematic horrible people, not when he was a problematic horrible person to your friend,” Wickham, 31, wrote via X on Thursday, March 13.
Wickham specifically clarified that his post wasn’t about a specific person — instead it was about everyone. “And the answer is yes to everyone you think this is about,” he added.
Before Wickham’s subtle social media shade, Bravo fans pointed out that Scheana Shay, Katie Maloney and Ariana Madix were no longer following Kennedy, 33, on Instagram. None of them have addressed the online shift, which came days after Kennedy apologized for posting a photo with Andrew and Tristan Tate.
James Kennedy's Most Controversial Moments: Fired From SUR, Arrest and More
“I regret posting a photo with the Tate brothers at an event last night,” Kennedy wrote via Instagram Stories on Saturday, March 8, about the brothers who have faced multiple accusations of sexual assault and human trafficking charges, which they have denied. “I was unfamiliar with their content and the allegations against them. I only knew them as podcasters [who] had posted a viral clip about Vanderpump.”
Kennedy continued: “I have since educated myself and condemn their beliefs. I am sorry to all that I offended.”

Wickham has been outspoken about not being on good terms with Kennedy because of his friendship with Kennedy’s ex Kristen Doute. Their volatile relationship was documented for several seasons when Kennedy joined Vanderpump Rules during season 3. After their split, Kennedy was engaged to Rachel “Raquel” Leviss, who also hinted at a tumultuous relationship when cameras weren’t rolling.
In December 2024, Us Weekly confirmed that police were dispatched to Kennedy’s home, where he lived with then-girlfriend Ally Lewber. The authorities received a call about an argument between a man and a woman and saw Kennedy allegedly grabbing the woman. Officers who responded to the scene did not see any visible injuries.
According to police records, the woman reportedly told the Burbank Police Department that “her boyfriend lifted her up and threw her to the ground.” Kennedy’s legal team subsequently released a statement on his behalf.
“We are in the process of conducting our own investigation into the allegations levied by the Burbank Police Department against James,” his attorneys said in a statement to Us after he was released on $20,000 bail. “We understand that there were no injuries and we are hoping that, after careful review, the city’s attorneys will decide not to file formal charges.”
‘Vanderpump Rules’ Cast’s Dating History
Lewber, 29, broke her silence before Us confirmed their split.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with love and support and for checking in on me,” she wrote via her Instagram Story. “I’m OK and taking the time I need right now. I deeply appreciate all the kindness and respect for my privacy during this time.”
After the authorities confirmed they wouldn’t be pressing charges, Lewber elaborated on the incident, writing in January, “Thank you all for your support and kindness. I am happy that prosecutors decided not to file against James, as I never desired criminal charges. We had an argument outside of his home related to him drinking again, however, I was not physically hurt.”
She continued: “We are no longer together, but I’ll always support James and wish him the best with his sobriety and healing. Thank you for your understanding.”
Most of Kennedy’s former VPR costars didn’t publicly address his legal problems. Shay, 39, and Lala Kent were the only ones who spoke out despite having concerns about entering the conversation.
‘Vanderpump Rules’ Cast's Biggest Scandals and Controversies
“I do hope that James views this as a rock-bottom moment and is serious about just committing to a healing plan vs. just seeing this is something that’s gonna, like, ruin the world tour or residency or whatever,” Shay said on her “Scheananigans” podcast in January. “I’ve noticed his name has been taken off of certain shows and that is a direct consequence to his actions.”
Shay urged Kennedy “to get help,” noting, “And not just to prevent Ally — or some other girl — from being subjected to abusive behavior in the future. But to give himself a chance to live life with healthy relationships. I know he wants those things for himself and he needs to give himself the proper tools to deal with his trauma that doesn’t involve projecting it onto others.”

Cluck, Cluck! Cate Blanchett and More Stars Who Have Pet Chickens
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Jennifer Garner and more celebrities have expanded their families with pet chickens.
“She’s always wanted chickens,” the Duke of Sussex said of his wife during their March 2021 CBS tell-all interview, giving a tour of their chicken coop.
Harry and the Duchess of Sussex, who moved to California in 2020 after stepping down from their duties as senior royals, added a home for their rescued chickens in “Archie’s Chick Inn.” (The coop’s name refers to their eldest son Archie, who was born in May 2019.)
The Suits alum, who noted that she just “[loves] rescuing” animals from chickens to her pet dogs, further gushed about their new residence in Montecito, California. “It’s so basic, but it’s really fulfilling. Just getting back down to basics,” Meghan, who welcomed daughter Lilibet with the duke in June 2021, added at the time.

“My husband is a very healthy and environmentally minded person, so we grow food at our house,” the Runaway Bride star told InStyle in September 2014. “We raise chickens for eggs. We live in a world where really fresh produce and organic food are a financial luxury, so if we have that luxury I'm going to take advantage of it for my family.”

“Brady designed a huge chicken condo and brought home many more chickens than I thought we had originally discussed,” Thiessen wrote on her blog in 2015. “[Our daughter] Harper was so excited so how do you say no, right? And my husband kept insisting that it’ll being easy. He would say, ‘Don’t worry babe, this is my thing. I’ll handle it all.’ So of course I went along with it. At first it was great. I loved how it taught our daughter about responsibility. She always had a love of animals but this took the cake. She adored these chickens. They became a part of our family quickly.”

A Timeline of Katie Thurston's Breast Cancer Battle
Katie Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2025 at the age of 34.
“I had a small lump in my breast around the 10’oclock [sic] spot,” the former Bachelorette wrote via her Instagram Stories that same month. “I discovered it myself. Thought maybe it was my period [or] maybe it was muscle soreness from working out. But, eventually, this lump never went away.”
Thurston subsequently visited her doctor for a mammogram, which indicated the presence of cancerous tissue. She later underwent a biopsy to learn more about the type of cancer.
“Good news! My cancer hasn’t metastasize[d],” Thurston shared via her Instagram Stories on February 21, 2025, noting the malignant tissue was confined in her lymph nodes. “Two more appointments left in LA before officially moving to NYC [on] March 1st. The anticipated order of things is fertility (egg/embryo freezing), chemo, then surgery.”
Katie Thurston Diagnosed With Breast Cancer: 'Ready to Fight This'
Ahead of her cancer treatment, Thurston moved to the Big Apple with her fiancé, Jeff Arcuri. (Thurston and the comedian got engaged in late 2024.)
“I’m so thankful for my family, friends, and community here for helping me make it to my current stage [sic] of mind,” she added. “Today I feel calm, less scared, and ready.”
Keep scrolling for a full timeline of Thurston’s cancer battle:
November 2024

Thurston discovered a lump in her breast in late 2024, noting the following February on her Instagram Stories that the pain continued for “three [or] four months.”
“My first lump [which was a benign cyst] felt like a pea or marble [and] hard, unnatural, but didn’t cause me discomfort. The second felt larger,” she recalled in February 2025. “The pain initially came and went, but maybe after 3-4 months of it not going away or improving, I got nervous and saw my doctor.”
Thurston had a breast ultrasound, a mammogram and multiple biopsies, which confirmed the presence of cancer.
February 2025
Thurston was diagnosed shortly before Valentine’s Day, revealing the news publicly several hours later.
“Yesterday I saw all the couples post their Valentine’s Day celebrations. I felt envious if I’m being honest. Jeff took me to Hawaii and after, we were going to travel the world before planting roots together in NYC finally,” she wrote via Instagram on February 15. “But instead, my Vday was spent coordinating a place to live as I have to go back to LA for more testing and treatment.”
She added, “I used my morning to figure out insurance for NYC and laws on preexisting conditions. I scheduled appointments for another biopsy, fertility, mental health, surgery, as well as meeting with my team to discuss the overall treatment plan, which will include chemo.”
‘Bachelorette’ Star Katie Thurston Gives Update on Breast Cancer Diagnosis
February 2025

Thurston had another biopsy, this time on her lymph nodes, on February 19.
“Finished biopsy. Went much better this time,” Thurston wrote via her Instagram Stories. “Took lorazepam, explained my last appt struggles and asked for more numbing, and they allowed Jeff to be there holding my hand.”
The biopsy indicated that Thurston’s cancer hadn’t metastasized further.
March 2025
At the start of the month, Thurston moved to NYC full-time before she started fertility treatments. The reality star opted to freeze embryos before undergoing chemotherapy.
“One day you think you don’t want kids,” she wrote on March 9. “Then one day you meet the man of your dreams and would do anything to make sure we can start a family in the future.”
March 2025

Throughout March, Thurston continued planning her treatment protocol.
“I opted in for the I-Spy breast cancer trial instead of the standard of care,” she wrote on March 13. “The goal is to match treatments to patients used on the molecular and genetic characteristics of their tumors instead of a ‘one size fits all’ route. This all means I’ll have extra testing done in advance and during.”
That same day, she had an optometry appointment to “get [her] eyes checked out” to check if she still qualifies for the I-Spy clinical trial. One day later, Thurston underwent an egg retrieval.
