Skating Club of Boston Announces 6 'Family' Members Died in Plane Crash

Six people affiliated with The Skating Club of Boston, including two young figure skaters, were killed in the deadly crash of American Airlines flight 5342 on Wednesday, January 29. 

In a statement posted via Instagram on Thursday, January 30, the club’s CEO and executive director, Doug Zeghibe, announced 16-year-old skaters Spencer Lane and Jinna Han were killed in the crash, along with their respective mothers, Christine Lane and Jin Han

Skating Club of Boston coaches Vadim Naumov and Evengenia Shishkova, who were married, were also killed. 

“Our sport and this Club have suffered a horrible loss with this tragedy,” the statement read. “Skating is a tight-knit community where parents and kids come together 6 to 7 days a week to train and work together. Everyone is like family. Of the skaters, coaches and parents on the plane, we believe six were from The Skating Club of Boston. We are devastated and completely at a loss for words.”

The statement continued, “These athletes, coaches and parents were returning from U.S. Figure Skating’s National Development Camp, following last week’s U.S. Championships in Wichita. This camp is for young competitive skaters of tomorrow with the most promise to be a champion of tomorrow. The Club sent 18 athletes to compete at the U.S. Championships. It sent 12 athletes to the National Development Camp.”

In a separate statement provided by U.S. Figure Skating to news outlet WUSA9 on Thursday, the organization confirmed the deaths of several of its athletes. 

“U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C.” the statement read. “These athletes, coaches and family members were returning home from National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.”

There were reportedly 60 passengers and four crew members on board the flight when it crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with an Army helicopter near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. There are not believed to be any survivors. 

The names of the other passengers on board the plane have not yet been released. 

Before taking off from Wichita, Spencer shared a photo from inside the plane via his Instagram Story on Wednesday. “ICT -> DCA,” he wrote, using the airport codes for Wichita’s Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport and D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport.

Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos and her fiancé, Chock Chapple, have spoken out regarding the recent D.C. plane crash in their respective hometowns.

“Just wanted to let everyone know that @chockchapple and I are both safe,” Vassos, 62, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Thursday, January 30. “Thank you to everyone who messaged and checked in on us.”

She continued, “We are absolutely heartbroken over the news of the plane crash. Our hearts are with the families and friends of the people on the flight.”

News broke late on Wednesday, January 29, that an American Airlines flight from Wichita, Kansas had crashed in the Potomac River, which is located in the Washington, D.C. area. (Chapple, 61, resides in Wichita, while Vassos is based in Maryland. In addition to splitting time in one another’s cities, they are also hunting for a joint apartment in New York City.)

Chapple also released a statement on the tragedy.

“My heart goes out to everyone impacted by the tragic plane crash,” he wrote via his Instagram Stories on Thursday. “I’m praying for our city during this difficult time. Joan and I are safe, and we’re sending out love and support.”

The American American flight reportedly serviced 60 passengers and four crew members. Several members of the U.S. Figure Skating Team were also included in the flight manifest.

“U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C.” a statement from the skating organization read. “These athletes, coaches and family members were returning home from National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.”

While names of the athletes on board weren’t immediately revealed, at least six of the passengers were presumably members of the Skating Club of Boston.

Everyone is like family. Of the skaters, coaches and parents on the plane, we believe six were from The Skating Club of Boston. We are devastated and completely at a loss for words.”

According to Zeghibe, the victims had been “returning from U.S. Figure Skating’s National Development Camp following last week’s U.S. Championships in Wichita.” The camp is a training program for young competitive ice skaters.

Olympic figure skater Tara Lipinski is mourning the deaths of those involved in the Wednesday, January 29, plane crash in Washington, D.C.

“My heart is broken for our skating community,” Lipinski, 42, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Thursday, January 30. “It’s unimaginable the loss. We will mourn their loss and ALWAYS remember them. My heart is with all the families affected — that part I have no words for.”

She continued, “‘Strength’ and ‘Love’ won’t do it justice. So many of our own were on this tragic flight and my heart aches for them and for everyone part of this devastating accident.”

Lipinski, who won a gold medal in the sport in 1998, had worked as a broadcaster during the national championship earlier this month alongside Terry Gannon and Johnny Weir. The fellow sportscasters have also addressed the tragedy.

“I’m praying for everyone affected by this tragic accident,” Weir, 40, wrote via his Instagram Stories on Thursday. “Members of our skating family were on that flight returning home from Nationals in Wichita. We mourn their loss and pray for their families and loved ones.”
