Brooks Nader and More Stars Who Normalized Discussing Their Periods

Demi Lovato, Jennifer Lawrence, Brooks Nader and more stars have inspired others to speak candidly about their periods.

For far too long, reproductive health issues were treated as taboo subjects, but public health experts and celebrities have helped make huge strides in normalizing discussions around the menstrual cycle.

Dakota Johnson got very real in 2019 when discussing the ways in which she struggled physically and emotionally during her cycle.

“If I’m honest, my hormonal changes during my menstrual cycle are ruining my life,” she told InStyle at the time. “Every month. It’s unbelievable. It’s really f****** amazing. I can’t get a grip on it. I’m like, what? Every time, I’m totally scandalized about what happens to my body and my brain. My boobs are like eight times the size they normally are. It’s really a traumatic thing, and it happens every month.”

The Materialists actress added that her experiences inspired her to partner with the charitable group Global Citizen to promote reproductive health education for the developing world.

“I really would like to understand and be able to manage things a little better, know what’s happening in my body, and know what I’m putting into it,” she noted.

Brooks Nader

Nader revealed in July 2025 that her period unexpectedly started while she was watching a tennis match at Wimbledon. In a TikTok video, the model spun around in her cap-sleeve black blouse with a long white skirt to reveal a small bloodstain on the skirt.

“Tries to be chic. Starts 🩸 at Wimbledon,” she joked.

Demi Lovato

The “Cool for the Summer” singer told People that her mom and sister celebrated when she revealed that she’d gotten her period for the first time.

“I told my mom and my sister [when I got my first period] … and they actually embarrassed me so bad,” she joked in 2015. “My sister folded a poster board in half and made a card out of it and drew pictures, and it said, ‘Happy Period Day!’”

Lovato went on: “[My sister] drew stick figures and kisses, and she used red markers … I have a pretty good sense of humor, so on one hand, I was totally embarrassed, and on the other, I thought it was awesome.”

Jennifer Lawrence

The Hunger Games actress explained to Harper’s Bazaar that her period has presented fashion challenges since it tends to occur right at the peak of awards season. Lawrence famously went with a “Plan B” dress for the 2016 Golden Globes to avoid discomfort.

“Plan A was a dress that I couldn’t wear because awards season is synced with my menstrual cycle, and it has been for years,” she said. “It was loose at the front. And I didn’t have to worry about sucking anything in. The other dress was really tight, and I’m not going to suck in my uterus. I don’t have to do that.”

In a 1998 Rolling Stone interview, Winslet remembered what it was like to shoot Titanic in a massive water tank at the same time as she was going through her period.

“I’m not saying it was all happy-clappy,” the Oscar winner said. “There were days when you’d just think, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve got my period and I can’t get in that freezing-cold water today.’ I remember standing up and saying to everyone, ‘Listen, if it suddenly looks like Jaws, the movie, it’s my fault.’”

Gigi Hadid

The supermodel spoke earnestly with friend Kendall Jenner for Vogue about the way her body changed throughout her cycle.

“My boobs are small right now. They get really big when it’s that time of the month,” Gigi explained.

Jenner nodded along and even joined in saying “that time of the month” with Hadid, indicating that she may have had similar experiences.

Lena Dunham

Dunham has spoken about undergoing a hysterectomy in 2017 following her endometriosis diagnosis. (According to the Mayo Clinic, endometriosis is a condition that results from the “inner lining of the uterus [growing] outside the uterus.” It can cause severe pain during menstrual cycles.)

The Girls creator told The Times U.K. that the medical procedure presented its own challenges for her viability to carry a child, since her uterus, cervix and one of her ovaries were removed.

Francia Raisa Was 'In Shock' Over New Endometriosis and SIBO Diagnoses

“It was a grief but it was also a relief,” she said in June 2025. “I thought I would have the opportunity to experience my fertility and my cycle waning and it never was. Instead it was a very quick, sharp cut-off … I will say we’re in the process of expanding our family in new ways.”

Brooklyn Decker

Decker revealed in 2020 that she used Depends branded underwear — which help control leakage for those suffering from incontinence.— after giving birth to her second child. (Decker and husband Andy Roddick share son Hank and daughter Stevie.)

“If you don’t want to talk about periods, keep scrolling,” she joked via Instagram. “I don’t know why I’m putting this out there publicly, but wtf happens post-children that makes … well … let’s just say I am now in the depends-wearing stage of my period.”

The model received lots of love for speaking so frankly, with many of her famous followers sharing similar experiences. Life in Pieces star Angelique Cabral agreed that it’s “a war zone down there” after having kids, while Teresa Palmer said she was “still waiting for [my period] to return so I can’t have more babies.”

Amy Schumer

Schumer fronted a PSA in 2020, in partnership with tampon brand Tampax, to encourage others to “take control over their periods.” The humorous clip followed Schumer as she chatted with real people about their most vulnerable period stories.

“It made my heart hurt to hear about the discomfort people are putting up with because they don’t understand periods or even how to use a tampon properly,” she said at the time. “I want to do everything I can to change that. My hope is that through this partnership, we’ll educate ourselves and each other and take the senseless shame out of getting your period.”

Miley Cyrus

Cyrus revealed to Marie Claire in 2015 that she enlisted her mom Tish Cyrus’ help in a moment of dire need when she got her period on the Hannah Montana set. Unfortunately, the singer was wearing white pants at the time!

“It was so embarrassing, but I couldn’t leave,” she recalled. “And I was crying, begging my mom, ‘You’re going to have to put the tampon in. I have to be on set.”

Jack Osbourne Pays Tribute After Dad Ozzy Osbourne's Final Concert

Jack Osbourne paid tribute following his father Ozzy Osbourne’s final live performance with Black Sabbath on Saturday, July 5.

Ozzy, 76, headlined the Back to the Beginning festival at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham with a five-song solo set — including classic tracks “Mr. Crowley” and “Crazy Train” — and was then joined by original Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for four more songs — “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid”— to finish the night. Following his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2019, Ozzy was seated in a throne throughout his set in front of a reported 42,000 fans.

“It’s so good to be on this f****** stage, you have no idea,” Osbourne told his fans. “Let the madness begin!”

His son Jack, 39, followed up the star-studded concert by sharing vintage footage of his father bringing him up on stage as a child.

“For everything I learned along the way…the final Good Night We Love You All,” Jack wrote via Instagram on Saturday.

Jack’s sister, Kelly Osbourne, and his mother, Sharon Osbourne, documented the day by sharing their own behind-the-scenes photos and videos from Back to the Beginning. (Ozzy and Sharon are also parents to 41-year-old daughter Aimee, but she did not post anything related to the concert via her social media.)

Dozens of punk, hard rock and heavy metal legends converged on Birmingham for one of the most impressive concert lineups in music history. Ozzy was supported by mini-sets from Guns N’ Roses, Metallica, Alice in Chains, Slayer and Fred Durst, among many others.

There were medleys performed by one-off supergroups, including Travis Barker jamming with Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and The Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. Barker’s wife, Kourtney Kardashian, shared footage of the drummer performing a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Symptom of the Universe” to express her pride over his involvement with the event.

Ozzy Osbourne: 'I'm Not F--king Dying' After Canceling Tour

The Osbournes announced that they were working on one final Black Sabbath show in February, to take place in Ozzy’s hometown of Birmingham. Proceeds from the event benefited the Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorn Children’s Hospice.

“It’s my time to go Back to the Beginning. … It’s time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” Ozzy said in a statement at the time. “How blessed am I to do it with the help of people whom I love. Birmingham is the true home of metal. Birmingham Forever.”

Ozzy retired from touring in 2023, following his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease and a severe spinal injury. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee recently confirmed on his Sirius XM radio show that he is no longer able to walk, but vowed not to let that stop him from performing for his hometown fans one last time.

Phil Collins, 74, Offers Health Update: ‘I’ve Been Very Sick’

“I do weights [and] bike riding, I’ve got a guy living at my house who’s working with me,” Ozzy told The Guardian in May. “It’s tough. I’ve been laid up for such a long time. I’ve been lying on my back doing nothing and the first thing to go is your strength. It’s, like, starting all over again.”

He went on, “I have problems walking. I also get blood pressure issues from blood clots on my legs. I’m used to doing two hours on stage, jumping and running around. I don’t think I’ll be doing much jumping or running around this time. I may be sitting down.”

Ozzy started his career with Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, before going solo in 1979. He has sold over 100 million albums throughout his career, and is a member of the U.K. Music Hall of Fame.

Sophia Hutchins May Have Been 'Speeding' Before Deadly ATV Crash: Report

Sophia Hutchins, Caitlyn Jenner’s friend and manager, was reportedly speeding while driving an ATV before her deadly crash in Malibu on Wednesday, July 2.

It was reported that Hutchins was riding the ATV near her friend and client Jenner’s Malibu home when she struck a car on Wednesday morning. The collision reportedly caused the ATV and Hutchins to plunge 350 feet into a nearby ravine, where she was later pronounced dead at the scene. (Hutchins was 29 years old.)

Sergeant Eduardo Saucedo, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu / Lost Hills division, has since told The Daily Mail that Hutchins was driving a black and blue-colored 2013 Polaris utility vehicle when she collided with a gray 2016 Mazda 6. (The two women in the Mazda were not hurt.)

“It looks like she may have been speeding and rear-ended the other car, the other party, and then that caused her to veer to the right and go off the cliff,” Saucedo clarified. “It doesn’t seem like she was following them. I think she just came up on them and then hit the car.”

11 Shocking Celebrity Deaths and In Memoriam Tributes

Saucedo suggested that Hutchins could have been trying to “maneuver” around the Mazda at the time of the crash.

“She was going too fast and just ended up clipping the rear end of that Mazda, causing her to veer off and go off the cliff there,” the officer theorized.

The officer confirmed that Jenner did visit the accident site as the investigation was underway. Investigators initially reportedly had to leave the damaged ATV in the ravine because local tow trucks did not have the necessary equipment to haul it back up the cliff.

Saucedo suggested that the investigators would wait for the coroner’s department to prepare a toxicology report before determining whether or not Hutchins was impaired while behind the wheel.

Us Weekly has reached out to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for comment.

Hutchins lived at Jenner’s Malibu home, where she also worked out of a converted guest house. She originally appeared on Jenner’s 2015 docuseries I Am Cait before becoming the athlete’s business manager. (Hutchins graduated from Pepperdine University with a degree in economics and finance in 2019.)

Jenner and Hutchins frequently denied that they were romantically involved. During a 2019 Good Morning Britain interview with Piers Morgan, she objected to questions about whether or not she and Jenner were “an item.”

“We have a really special relationship. I don’t think we need to be an item to have a really special relationship, so to speak,” she replied. “I am here for Caitlyn 1,000 percent and Caitlyn’s here for me 1,000 percent. I think the best way to describe our relationship is that we are partners in every sense of the word. When it comes to work, absolutely there for each other 100 percent. When it comes to family and our personal relationship, absolutely there for each other 100 percent and there’s no denying it.”

Most Shocking Celebrity Deaths of All Time

Jenner subsequently told The Times U.K. in October 2023 that she was “very single” and was “not even close” to looking for a relationship.

“I’ll never have a relationship in the future,” she explained. “I just don’t see that in my life. I am not looking for that.”

As part of her working partnership with Jenner, Hutchins negotiated the former Keeping Up with the Kardashians star’s involvement with the British reality show I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! in 2019 and also secured her frequent corporate speeches.

Kourtney Kardashian Supports Travis Barker During Huge U.K. Concert

Kourtney Kardashian took pride in her husband, Travis Barker, performing at Ozzy Osbourne’s final concert on Saturday, July 5.

“That’s my husband,” Kardashian, 46, beamed via her Instagram Story, alongside footage of Barker drumming.

Kardashian shared footage of Barker, 49, rocking out behind the drum kit while he covered Black Sabbath’s “Symptom of the Universe” alongside two other legendary drummers — Danny Carey, of Tool and Skinny Puppy, and Chad Smith, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Barker was one of dozens of punk, hard rock and heavy metal icons taking part in the Back to the Beginning festival at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, on Saturday. The special concert was promoted as Osbourne’s final performance with Black Sabbath following years of health woes. (Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in February 2019 and subsequently had to retire from touring due to a variety of physical ailments.)

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker’s Relationship Timeline

Later, the Blink-182 member joined in on a medley of hard rock classics as part of a supergroup. He drummed on the blues standard “Train Kept A-Rollin'” with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and contributed to a cover of Osbourne’s 1983 hit “Bark at the Moon” with Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and Ghost vocalist Tobias Forge (a.k.a. Papa Emeritus).

Barker shared several photos and videos from the event via his own Instagram Story, including a sneak peek at him hanging out with Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood backstage.

Earlier in the day, Kardashian revealed she’d accompanied her husband to the U.K. for the Back to the Beginning festival by sharing a look at their tea service. A pair of sunglasses and one of her children’s WWE action figures lingered in the background, as Kardashian drew attention to her “butter yellow” nail tips.

Kourtney was the only one of her sisters not to attend Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s star-studded wedding in Venice, Italy, last weekend. (Kris Jenner was in attendance for the gala alongside daughters Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner.)

Despite missing out on the wedding of the year, Kourtney seemingly had plenty of fun of her own as she posed in an oversized gray suit and a white dress shirt for a beach party.

Kourtney and Travis also recently brought their son Rocky along for a family outing at the WWE’s Money in the Bank event in Los Angeles. The Kardashians star cradled her baby boy as the cameras spotted the family sitting in the Intuit Dome. (Kourtney shares Rocky with Barker and has three children with ex Scott Disick: 15-year-old Mason, 12-year-old Penelope, and 10-year-old Reign. She is also a stepmother to Barker’s son Landon, 21, daughter Alabama, 19, and his stepdaughter, Atiana, 25,)

Doting Dad! Travis Barker's Best Parenting Moments Over the Years

Elsewhere, Kourtney raised eyebrows during an appearance on her sister Khloé’s “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast in May when she questioned why kids are required to go to school.

“Let’s say the school system. I’ll think, ‘Why do kids f****** go to school?’ Truly, it’s so dated,” Kourtney declared.

She went on, “I’ll start thinking, and then like, you know, my kids will send me videos about, like, ‘Why do kids go to (school)?’ It’ll be like, really successful people, and they’ll be like, ‘My kids never go to school and they’re never going to’ and whatever. And then I’m like, ‘OK, what’s the goal here? You want to do homeschool? Let’s do it.’”

Khloé backed up her sister’s hot take, insisting she has always been a “homeschool person.” (Khloé shares 7-year-old daughter True and 2-year-old son Tatum with ex Tristan Thompson.)
