‘General Hospital’ Star Leslie Charleson Dead at Age 79
Former General Hospital star Leslie Charleson has died at age 79.
General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini announced Charleson’s death via the show’s official Instagram account on Sunday, January 12.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson,” he wrote. “Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.”
Alongside the message, Valentini shared a photo of the four-time Daytime Emmy nominee smiling. “I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit and incredible presence on set,” he continued. “On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”
‘General Hospital’ Star Kelly Monaco’s Soap Opera Ups and Downs
Charleson began playing the role of Monica Quartermaine on the soap opera in 1977, making her the longest-running cast member on General Hospital.
“I started the show the day Elvis Presley died, and being such a huge fan, I of course was very upset driving to the studios, and then getting there I was told that they hoped I had brought my own wardrobe and makeup because there was a strike going on — and that was before I even got in the building,” Charleson recalled to Soap Opera Digest in 2022.
“Then I got in the building and I realized that no one really liked me, because the girl playing Monica before me was very rudely fired,” Charleson continued, referring to Patsy Rahn, whom she replaced.
After 30 years on the show, Charleson appeared on General Hospital in a recurring status in 2010. Charleson, who has had health ups and downs, had returned to the show a few times — most recently appearing in a wheelchair in December 2023.
How Kelly Monaco Landed Her 'Dream' Soap Opera Role After Career Setback
While speaking with Soap Opera Digest in 2016, Charleson — who was married to Bill Demms from 1988 to 1991 — reflected on her General Hospital legacy.
“It has been quite a long run,” she said at the time. “I am just so pleased because, unlike some of the actors that have come and gone, and gone on to other soaps or other things, this has really been my home since I started here, way back then, hundreds of years ago. I am very grateful to keep working at something that I love to do, and I am certainly grateful that it has endured.”
The Wanted's Max George Wrote a Will Before Heart Surgery
Max George is reflecting on his recent hospitalization for issues with his heart.
“That first night I wrote a will, I thought I was going to die,” George, 36, said in a Saturday, January 11, interview with The Sun.
The Wanted frontman recalled waking up with freezing blue hands on December 11, 2024, while he was staying with his mom.
“I hadn’t been feeling myself for a few days, I started feeling a bit rough,” George said. “I couldn’t put my finger on it. I was quite lethargic and stuff, struggling to get out of bed. But I didn’t think it was anything serious.”

He continued, “Luckily I’d gone around to my mum’s to stay and I woke up and I remember looking at my hands and they were blue, and my arms were a grey colour and I was freezing cold. I struggled to even sit up in bed.”
When George’s mom saw him, she gasped and called a doctor. While George had a check-up and was sent home, his mom continued asking around for help.
“At this point I had a panicky feeling, but was also just absolutely knackered,” he said. “I couldn’t move my arms and the worst feeling was I felt like my throat was closing up. It felt like someone had their hands around my neck. Thank God I stayed at Mum’s house — she saved my life.”
Doctors informed George that something was “not right with the bottom part” of his heart and he would need a pacemaker.
Celebrity Health Scares Through the Years
“For some reason the rhythm is way off and the signal doesn’t seem to be getting from the top chamber of your heart to the bottom part, the bit that pumps the blood around your body,” he recalled the doctors telling him. “I was in complete shock.”
George called the experience “really scary” noting that it was “certainly not a place I thought I’d be in at 36.”
“I was awake all night, feeling a closing in my throat, I was really struggling to move and had really deep, slow breaths,” he said. “There was nothing that they could do to stop that. I could have lived maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months, but it could have been a few hours. We didn’t know.”
Two days after being admitted to the hospital, George’s heart rate dropped to 26 beats per minute.
“Friday, December 13, was the worst day that I had there,” he said. “My heart rate and my blood pressure dropped at the same time, and that was the biggest worry.”

He continued, “The consultants weren’t there on hand to do the operation in an emergency. It was quite close that night, it really felt like my neck was closing up and that’s when the sort of panic really kicked in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional.”
George was taken by an ambulance to a hospital on December 15, where he had a CT scan. He received a pacemaker three days later, with his partner Maisie Smith by his side as he became aware of his surroundings.
“I had a proper heartbeat by then as well. My heart rate started just shooting up. So I remember feeling my feet going tingly, because I think obviously the blood started to properly pump around,” he said.
He continued, “I was like, ‘Holy s—, I feel alive again,’ like it was a really nice feeling. It’d been so hard being away from Maisie, but she climbed on the bed, obviously she lay on the other side of my chest to my op, and put her head on me. We just had a cuddle for a couple of hours while I talked about football and we treated it like normal. I could feel butterflies again next to her.”
Tyler Perry Slams ‘Pure Greed' of Insurance Companies Amid L.A. Wildfires
Tyler Perry slammed insurance companies who implemented policy changes ahead of the wildfires that have devastated the greater Los Angeles area.
“Watching a daughter use a garden hose to try and protect her 90-year-old parents’ home because their insurance was canceled was just gut-wrenching to me,” Perry wrote via Instagram on Sunday, January 12.
“Does anyone else find it appalling that insurance companies can take billions of dollars out of communities for years and then, all of a sudden, be allowed to cancel millions of policies for the very people they became rich on?” the filmmaker continued. “People who have paid premiums all of their lives are left with nothing because of pure greed.”
He concluded, “As I am in the process of trying to figure out what steps to take to do all I can to help as many as I can, I am keeping everyone in my prayers.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, State Farm General, the largest home insurer in California, announced in March 2024 it would not be renewing 30,000 home and condominium policies when they expired — 1,600 of which were located in the Pacific Palisades.
Per the Times, insurance company Chubb stopped writing new policies for high-value homes designated to be at high risk for wildfires, while Allstate also stopped writing new policies.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the wildfires that began a path of destruction through Los Angeles the morning of Tuesday, January 7, when high winds sparked fast-moving brush fires through the Pacific Palisades. The fires have since spread to surrounding neighborhoods, including Malibu and the Hollywood Hills.
According to local authorities, the death toll has reached at least 16 people and is expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. NBC News reports that the blaze has burned through 37,000 acres and destroyed over 12,000 structures.
Which Stars Have Been Affected by the Los Angeles Fires?
Over 150,000 people have been placed under mandatory evacuation orders, including stars like Mark Hamill, Jennie Garth and Mandy Moore. A number of celebrities, however, were not so lucky, as their homes were completely destroyed by the fires, including Paris Hilton, Anna Faris, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, Billy Crystal, Mel Gibson and Milo Ventimiglia.
According to AccuWeather, the wildfires could be the costliest in U.S. history, with the total economic loss currently estimated to be between $135 billion and $150 billion as of Thursday, January 9.

Erin Andrews Says Husband Jarret Stoll 'Would Rather We Not Be So Public'
Erin Andrews and her husband, Jarret Stoll, don’t always see eye-to-eye when it comes to sharing their personal lives with the public.
“My husband would rather we not be so public — me not be so public,” Andrews, 46, told Success magazine in an interview published on Friday, January 10.
While the couple, who tied the knot in 2017, navigated their fertility journey, the idea of being private came up. “He was just like, ‘Why do we have to say this?’ And I said, ‘Because these waiting rooms are packed,’” she explained.
Andrews has been candid through the years about her fertility journey, sharing in a 2021 essay for Bulletin that she had been undergoing “time-consuming and emotionally draining” treatments since she was 35. In July 2023, the couple welcomed their first child, son Mack, via surrogate.
Erin Andrews Says She’s Considering Baby No. 2, Talks What Scares Her
Now, the couple is thinking about adding another little one to their family. “We’re talking about trying it again,” Andrews told E! News in October 2024. “I was really, really honest with my doctor a couple weeks ago. I just said, ‘We’ve had so much high with the birth of Mack and how great he’s doing that I don’t want to go back to that place of failure again, and I’m really, really afraid of it.’”
Before Mack’s birth, Andrews lost two of her embryos. “It’s crazy, because once you get back on the phone with your fertility doctor and you start talking about the journey again, PTSD all comes back, of how crappy you felt, how numb your body gets, just the fear of loss,” she said.
Andrews noted that she and Stoll, 42, leaned on each other through the emotional process, helping each other by sharing their feelings.

“Sometimes men don’t want to talk about this stuff, but they’re also feeling the feels, too,” Andrews said. “My husband was really, really great after we were going through more lows than highs, just being like, ‘This sucks. This just isn’t great. I feel really crappy, and I feel like a failure,’ and that really helped a lot too.”
While navigating her job responsibilities and parenting duties, Andrews shared that she’s still figuring out a proper work-life balance. “I talked about it on a walk with my husband last night as we were walking our dog — we’ve got a lot going on,” she told Success magazine.
Andrews said the start of the NFL season is when her life gets “absolutely crazy” with her work. “Plus it’s a Super Bowl year,” she said. “We have Tom Brady on our broadcasting crew this year. So it’s going to be a lot.”

Why Caden Prieskorn's Family Didn't Move With Him for NFL Draft Training
Collegiate tight end Caden Prieskorn and his wife, TikTok personality Cali Prieskorn, are navigating a long-distance marriage while he trains for the 2025 NFL draft.
Caden, 25, recently finished his final year playing football for the University of Mississippi. At many of his games, he was supported by wife Cali, also 25, and their two kids. They share son Mac, 3, and daughter Romy, 8 months. (Mac previously went viral on TikTok for doing “lucky [fist] bumps” with the Ole Miss players before each game.)
Cali, however, opted not to leave Mississippi with the kids full-time, instead deciding to travel to see Caden on the weekends.
“My husband just finished his last year of college and football and just moved to Nashville to train for the NFL draft,” Cali said in a Friday, January 10, TikTok video. “I decided to stay back with the kids because Mac still has school, but we’re trying to get to Nashville every weekend.”
NFL Families Get Real About the Cost of Football: Uniforms, Fines and More
She added, “I’m honestly so excited he’s training in Nashville. There’s so much to do and so many good places to eat. This weekend’s gonna be super chill, but it’s going to be nice spending time as a family.”
In another video posted earlier this month, Cali revealed that Caden’s training will last approximately three months.
“I’m so glad he gets to keep pursuing his dreams,” she said in the TikTok clip. “He will leave for a little bit because he got invited to the Shrine Bowl [in Dallas]. He worked so hard, so I’m glad he’s getting that opportunity. I’m going to take the kids down to Dallas, as well, and then he’ll go back to Nashville for training.”
The NFL draft is held annually in April, which is when Caden will learn whether or not a football franchise decided to sign him to their 53-man roster. In her second video, Cali also reiterated why she didn’t plan to uproot her family in order to follow and remain close to her husband.
“Mac is in school and I love his school so much,” she stated. “I think it’s important that they have that structure. I’m just going to split my time between the two [places.] I’ll be in Oxford, [Mississippi] during the week while Mac has school.”

Cali added that she was still “trying to figure out how to balance” solo parenting while Caden is away working out.
“I don’t think it’s going to be easy,” the influencer added. “College football has been so fun. I’m honestly just so excited to see where we’re going and what we’ll be doing. I just feel like this is such a huge step in life [and] I’m so excited to see what happens.”
Ariana Grande Recalls ‘Long, Emotional Process’ Filming New ‘Wicked’ Song
Ariana Grande opened up about the emotional process of filming Wicked: For Good, teasing a new song for Glinda as well as a major transformation for the character.
While appearing on Variety’s “Awards Circuit Podcast,” released on Saturday, January 11, Grande, 31, opened up about filming the song “For Good,” the iconic duet between Glinda and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). For the uninitiated, the song marks a pivotal moment for the characters in the upcoming Wicked sequel.
“Shooting ‘For Good’ was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced,” Grande shared. “It was such a long and emotional process. I kind of left my body. We filmed it over the course of a week, and it stayed with me. I haven’t even seen the final cut yet because I’m not sure I’m ready to feel all of it again.”
Wicked: For Good will also feature a completely new song for Glinda, which was written by composer Stephen Schwartz for the film.
Ariana Grande Credits Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo for Helping ‘Heal’ Her
“It’s a pivotal moment in Glinda’s journey,” Grande reveals. “It shows a side of her we’ve never seen before. In the stage show, this transformation happens offstage. But in the movie, we get to see her make the decision that defines who she is. It’s a privilege to sing this song and be the first Glinda to bring it to life.”
Glinda was originally played by Kristin Chenoweth in Wicked on Broadway. Speaking with Variety, Grande further reflected on her own interpretation of the character, saying, “From the moment it was announced, I realized this role would live with me forever.”
She continued, “It’s an honor, but it also comes with so much weight. I wanted to do it justice. Glinda isn’t just a character to me — she’s a symbol of growth and love, and I wanted to give her everything I had.”
Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked is based on the Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel of the same name. It follows the story of Elphaba, a.k.a. the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda, a.k.a. Glinda the Good Witch, before and during the events of The Wizard of Oz as their relationship develops from rival roommates to best friends, set against the backdrop of societal turmoil in the land of Oz.
Ariana Grande and Kristin Chenoweth Agree Glinda Is 'A Little in the Closet'
Erivo, for her part, also gushed about one of the sequel’s new songs on a December 2024 episode of Variety’s “Award Chatter” podcast.
“I collaborated on one of the new songs, and it’s so special to me,” she said at the time. “When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready — it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.”
She continued, “We’re diving deeper into the consequences of the characters’ choices. The story is richer, and the stakes are higher. It’s not just a continuation; it’s a transformation.”
Wicked is in theaters now and is available to rent and purchase on digital platforms. The sequel, titled Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters on November 21.
Why Sheryl Lee Ralph Is Glad Husband Vincent Hughes 'Has His Own Life'
Sheryl Lee Ralph and her husband, Vincent Hughes, remain blissfully in love after two decades of marriage — even though they don’t often live together.
“I’m very fortunate. The man that I am married to is Senator Vincent Hughes, seventh Senatorial District of Pennsylvania,” the Abbott Elementary star, 68, told People in a profile published on Wednesday, January 8. “You fall in love with somebody and you realize he’s not leaving his career. He’s not leaving Philadelphia. I’m not leaving Hollywood. When you have children, it’s very difficult.”
Ralph and Hughes, 68, have been married since 2005. The actress was previously married to Eric Maurice, with whom she shares son Etienne and daughter Ivy-Coco.
Ralph is based in Los Angeles, where she films ABC’s Abbott Elementary, while Hughes keeps a residency in Pennsylvania for his political constituency.
'Does It Matter?' Sheryl Lee Ralph Responds to Super Bowl Lip Sync Rumors
“Every two weeks we saw each other, and it has continued to work out well,” she explained to the outlet. When I go to see him, I love to see him. When it’s time to leave, ‘Bye-bye. See you soon.’ I’m telling you, life is good.”
Ralph continued, “He has his own life. I have my own life. He has his own real career, I have my own real career. He has his light to stand in, I have my light to stand in. He is not looking at me thinking about status or this or that. He’s doing his thing. I get to do my thing.”
That being said, Ralph and Hughes remain each other’s biggest career cheerleaders.
“It’s all good,” Ralph explained, citing communication as their secret to success. “I’ve evolved into [saying], ‘Let’s talk about it.’ If you sit in problems, you get anxious, depressed, and all the juiciness in life starts to dry up. I can’t have that, because all of that will mess with my good looks!”
Sheryl Lee Ralph Addresses Rumors She Doesn’t Live With Senator Husband
Ralph’s bicoastal marriage initially raised eyebrows years earlier in 2023.
“I see him every two weeks and when I see him I’m so happy to see him and then when I’m leaving I’m so happy to leave ‘cause I know I’ll be back again!” Ralph told Extra in December 2023.
Weeks later, she reiterated that the long-distance romance works for them.
“[Vincent and I] live together on and off, in that I’m shooting Abbott Elementary in L.A. [and] he is at the Capitol every week,” Ralph told E! News. “So, we see each other in between [our busy schedules].”

Prior to his death, Plaza, 40, and the filmmaker had been together for 14 years and exchanged vows in 2020. One year after saying “I do,” Plaza recalled how she and Baena decided to tie the knot.
“A lot of things happened during COVID for me. Yes, we got married. Big deal,” Plaza recalled during a December 2021 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We got a little bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up.”
Plaza continued, “We were in the lockdown. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.”
The White Lotus actress said she wanted to “do something” special for their 10th anniversary and decided to throw a ceremony in their backyard.
Aubrey Plaza’s Husband Jeff Baena Cause of Death Revealed
“I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature,” she said. “Then the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase [to perform the ceremony]. … I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But I’m pretty sure it’s legal.”
The following year, Plaza shared that her nuptials to Baena was not well-received by some fans. “Oh, my God. Jeff got death threats in his DMs,” Plaza told Cosmopolitan in a 2022 profile. “I think so.
