Janelle Monáe was one of the best-dressed celebrities at the 2025 Met Gala, enlisting the help of Thom Browne and "Wicked" costume designer Paul Tazewell to pull off an illusion-bending black-and-red suit that wowed on the red carpet.

And Monáe kept the theme going with her after-party look, giving us a daring interpretation of her original look.

The ensemble included a black-and-white miniskirt and blazer, which Monáe wore open to show off anchor pasties. And the look wouldn't be complete without Monáe's pinstripe top hat and monocle.

Brooks Nader's little black dress for the Met Gala was anything but simple.

From one side, the model appeared to be wearing a classic long-sleeved gown. But the one-shoulder ensemble had a daring cutoff on the other side to show off some skin.

Nader kept the rest of her look simple with a sleek ponytail and statement earrings.

Keke Palmer swapped her black and white Vera Wang ensemble for a crop top and miniskirt as she hit the Met Gala after-party circuit on Monday night.

After dominating the Met Gala for years, naked dresses were almost completely absent on Monday night.

But Monica Barbaro stayed true to the mainstay trend with her sheer black number for the after-parties.

The "A Complete Unknown" star's button-up dress featured gold and pink flower embroidery, short sleeves, and ruffles on the shoulders.

Alex Consani glittered in over 32,000 Swarovski crystals for her Met Gala debut on Monday night, and the sparkles didn't stop for the after-party.

The model swapped her white gown for a shimmering spaghetti-strap gold minidress, which she paired with a choker necklace that matched her bracelet and earrings.

Ortega put a fun twist on menswear for her after-party look, donning a black bodysuit designed to look like a blazer. The garment had a plunging neckline, shoulder pads, and button detailing.

Shaboozey's after-party look offered a high-fashion twist on the looks he wears to perform. Hot-pink, floral embroidery covered the singer's jacket, matching the chaps on his jeans.

Both garments had bow detailing, and a white ascot around Shaboozey's neck elevated the ensemble. Pink boots tied it all together.

The singer's after-party look was a continuation of the gown she wore for the red carpet, as it had the same halter neckline and sparkly fabric but a shorter hemline.

She also swapped her white cape coat for a shorter black number.

Lee chose a deconstructed corset minidress for the after-party. The dress was overlaid with sheer lace and had shrug-style sleeves. Her headpiece and heels matched the dress.

The TikToker wore all white to celebrate the Met Gala, pairing a cropped one-shoulder top with a coordinating column skirt. Swirled detailing on the bodice added some texture to the simple look.

Black sunglasses added a fun flair to Rowe's outfit.

Lyonne's second look of the night was a bright-red, crocheted dress. The open weave of the high-neck dress showed peeks of her skin, as did the sheer black tights she wore under it.

She contrasted the feminine garment with black boots.

Fox played with denim for her post-Met Gala ensemble, wearing wide-legged shorts embroidered with the Yankees logo, laced boots, and a blue corset.

Flowers burst off the architectural top's one-shoulder neckline and hem, contrasting the industrial feel of the rest of the outfit.

Coco Rocha stayed on theme for the after-party with a tailored suit dress featuring plenty of daring cutouts.

The Canadian model's long-sleeved dress had lapels, giving it the appearance of a cropped suit jacket, while the bottom was a mermaid-style skirt.

She accessorized the ensemble with a cane and headpiece that matched her gown.

Colman Domingo, ASAP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams served as the co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala, bringing the "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style"-themed event to life.

When they made it inside, the group posed for a photo with Anna Wintour, celebrating that their hard work had finally paid off.

The steps into the museum looked almost like a portal into another world, as daffodil petals hung from the ceiling and the area was swathed in blue lighting.

The otherworldly feel continued inside, as attendees dined in dim lighting surrounded by projections of galaxies on the surrounding walls.

A dance floor seemed to be built into the center of the room.

Patterned table cloths decorated the tables for the gala, as did multicolored bouquets and flower-printed napkins.

The chairs also featured paisley cushions in an array of colors, giving the tables an eclectic and inviting feel.

ASAP Rocky made his debut as a Met Gala co-chair in an outfit from AWGE, his creative agency.

Legendary designer Tommy Hilfiger paused to admire the ensemble, even taking a peek under the star's jacket.

Rihanna made headlines at the Met Gala before she even arrived, revealing hours before the party that she was pregnant with her third child.

She didn't arrive at the gala until late in the evening, so she and ASAP weren't able to pose for photos on the red carpet as they had in years past. They took a picture together inside, though, highlighting how well their outfits fit together.

It's never a dull moment when Kim Kardashian arrives at the Met Gala, but this year, she didn't make much of a splash in her all-black ensemble.

In classic Kardashian fashion, the reality TV star still wanted her outfit to be daring, revealing a low-rise skirt in the back. But her look didn't stand out in a night full of bold suits and regal colors.

The Norwegian billionaire stepped on the red carpet in a cream-colored suit, an overcoat seemingly made from latex, a wide-brimmed hat, and Tabi boots.

Overall, the ensemble looked like it needed some tailoring.

He also carried a see-through briefcase filled with vibrant red roses, which made the outfit look more like a costume than a high-fashion moment.

Hawke looked pretty as she walked the red carpet in a custom Prada look. However, her pink, stapless dress and sheer, tan cape didn't seem inspired by menswear or Black dandyism.

Sink made her Met Gala debut in a black ball gown with lace detailing on the bodice that crossed over her torso, forming sheer sleeves.

The dress was pretty but had a Gothic feel that didn't suit the theme. The full skirt also swallowed Sink, making it look like the dress was wearing her.

It pains us to put the Princess of Genovia on this list, but Anne Hathaway's look just didn't stand out.

The fashion icon kept things simple for fashion's biggest night with her custom Carolina Herrera ensemble, which featured a white dress shirt and a bedazzled black-and-white striped skirt.

A matching sparkling jacket could have added a little more oomph to the overall effect.

You couldn't miss Anderson as she walked the red carpet in a crystal-covered gown from Tory Burch. It was silver, long-sleeved, and wide in shape. She also wore her hair in a new blonde bob.

Though the outfit was fun and a fashion risk for Anderson, it mostly looked out of her comfort zone.

Heidi Klum may be the queen of Halloween, but she played it too safe on fashion's biggest night.

The supermodel wore a simple, sleeveless black dress with a flowing train to the Met Gala. The ensemble could have benefited from some flashy accessories or a bold jacket.

James attended the Met Gala in her husband LeBron James' stead, as the honorary co-chair pulled out of the event due to a knee injury.

Her mermaid style Thom Browne gown was on-theme, with its suit-jacket bodice and pinstripe pattern.

However, the corset detailing on the bodice didn't look well-tailored to James' body. Some small adjustments to the bodice would have made this a standout look.

While we loved the silver color and sheen of Lorde's Thom Browne outfit — which included a bandeau that seemed to defy gravity — we thought the skirt style was a bit outdated.

We think Lorde's look would have had a bit more edge if she had paired her bandeau with tailored pants instead.

Joe Burrow made his Met Gala debut on Monday, but his baggy suit just didn't look right for a night celebrating impeccable tailoring.

His shirt's open collar and creased pants also detracted from the overall ensemble, and his baby-blue Gucci sneakers didn't seem to coordinate with the color scheme.

We wish the Bengals star had opted for something a bit sharper.

Wales Bonner created Apollo's suit, which included a cropped jacket, straight trousers, and a sparkling leopard-print shirt.

The patterned top was an unexpected twist for a menswear look, but it clashed with the yellow streaks in his hair. The look might have worked better if he had chosen just one pop of color.

Just weeks after returning from space, King attended the 2025 Met Gala in a hot-pink halter dress that resembled a deconstructed suit.

Though the dress, designed by Chuk Collins, embraced menswear elements, other style details dated the look; namely, its peplum waist, pink plaid, and sparkling floral appliques.

Its lengthy skirt also could have benefited from a bit more tailoring.

Hailey Bieber's Met Gala look lacked the color and fun that define dandyism.

Instead, she opted for a simple black suit jacket and tights. The ensemble could've benefited from bold accessories or a pattern to add depth to the monochromatic look.

Kendall Jenner arrived at the Met Gala with Hailey Bieber, and her outfit was similarly lackluster.

The model sported a tailored Torishéju suit jacket with a matching gray skirt.

It was a hue that felt more corporate than representative of dandyism. It could've been better in a pastel tone instead.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade coordinated in chic black and white looks as they walked the Met Gala steps on Monday night.

They both added pops of color via their gems, with Union opting for a ruby necklace and Wade sporting a bedazzled baby-blue vest.

Colman Domingo and his husband, Raúl, weren't afraid to be bold on fashion's biggest night.

Although repeat Met Gala attendees make up much of the red carpet, many celebrities are coming to their first-ever Met Gala in 2025.

The Eagles' Saquon Barkley made his Met debut on Monday, as did Colman Domingo's husband, Raúl Domingo. Pianist Gina Alice Redlinger and model Christian Latchman are also attending their first Met Gala this year.

Everyone knew Colman Domingo was going to bring it to the Met Gala, and the Oscar-nominated actor lived up to the hype on Monday night.

Domingo first arrived on the Met Gala steps in a positively regal blue Valentino cape with a shimmering gold breastplate — an outfit that would've made the late style icon and OG dandy André Leon Talley extremely proud.

But that wasn't all Domingo had up his sleeve. The "Sing Sing" star revealed there was a perfectly tailored suit underneath, complete with a polka-dot tie and a flower.

Anna Wintour arrived for fashion's biggest night in head-to-toe pastels.

She sported a baby-blue silk shift dress embroidered with flowers, which coordinated well with the blue carpet covered in daffodils.

Wintour paired her ensemble with a matching blue floor-length coat and a brooch that sparkled from its lapel. She styled her signature bob to perfection, although her usual pair of sunglasses were MIA.

The Vogue editor-in-chief first co-chaired the Met Gala in 1995 and has been at its helm ever since. Under her influence, the gala has become a star-studded spectacle and the cost of a ticket has skyrocketed from around $2,000 to $75,000.

Taylor, one of the hosts of Vogue's livestream for the evening, arrived at the gala with the costume designer Ruth Carter.

Her ensemble featured all the hallmarks of dandyism, from a pinstripe suit to a cane and statement hat, and additions like platform shoes and floral brooches that felt uniquely her.

Taylor's whole look was a standout, but her statement cape was the star of the outfit. It trailed behind her dramatically and was embroidered with "Harlem Rose," referencing her 2018 song "A Rose in Harlem."

James announced on X on Monday that he would be unable to attend because of a knee injury.

"Hate to miss an historical event," he wrote, adding that his wife, Savannah James, will still be attending. "My beautiful powerful Queen will be there holding the castle down as she always has done!"

It would have been the basketball star's first Met Gala appearance.

There's much more to the Met Gala than a flashy red carpet.

Inside, attendees first experience a cocktail hour, where they can walk through the museum, see the newest fashion exhibit, and mingle with other stars. They're later seated for a formal dinner, from which they can see the evening's stage show. In the past, musicians including Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga have performed. Fingers crossed for a Doechii performance this year.

Of course, the Met Gala isn't open to just anyone. It costs $75,000 for a single ticket and $350,000 for a table. The latter are often purchased by fashion designers, who dress and bring celebrities as guests.

Rihanna's outfits for the 10 Met Galas she has attended to date have become legendary over the years.

She reached icon status at the 2015 Met Gala with the yellow Guo Pei gown she wore. Rihanna also stole the show when she co-chaired the gala in 2018, wearing a Margiela ensemble inspired by the pope.

While the rest of the guest list is under wraps, we're hopeful stars like Zendaya, Greta Lee, Elle Fanning, and Jennifer Lopez will return to the Met, as they wore some of the most eye-catching looks at the 2024 Met Gala.

It's also common for celebrity couples to make red-carpet debuts at the Met Gala, so we'll be looking out for A-listers walking hand in hand up the steps.

Vogue's editor in chief first chaired the Met Gala in 1995, and in the 30 years she's been spearheading it, Wintour has become synonymous with the event itself.

She decides who earns a coveted spot on the Met Gala's guest list. The list of celebrities who have never attended a Met Gala has some surprising names.

It was also rumored that she approved the outfits of everyone who attended, though she shut that down in an interview with "Good Morning America" ahead of the 2025 event.

"Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can," she told Michael Strahan. "Some, no idea."

Numerous pre-gala festivities took place over the weekend to kick off the 2025 Met Gala. Some retailers like Moda Operandi hosted parties, while figures like Anna Wintour held small dinners.

The 2025 Met Gala co-chairs — Lewis Hamilton, Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, and ASAP Rocky — are all known for their bold approaches to menswear.

Wintour has never made the co-chairs' exact responsibilities public, but they're said to help plan the event's dress code and dinner. They also promote the event, and alongside the Met Gala's committee members, they are usually the first people to arrive on the event's red carpet.

The 2025 Met Gala committee is full of A-list stars, including Tyla, Ayo Edebiri, and Simone Biles.

This year's Met Gala is themed "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style."

Vogue reported that the theme was inspired by Black dandyism, menswear, and "the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora."

Black dandyism, specifically, is a style and movement that's been embraced by Black men since the 18th century. It typically involves sharp dressing — think tailored suits, hats, and canes — to assert individuality, culture, and equality.

Met Gala guests have been given a loose dress code titled "Tailored For You," though it's open to interpretation. Still, Vogue said we can expect to see a surplus of suits, canes, pocket squares, and other pieces related to dandyism.

This year will also mark the second time the Costume Institute exhibit is focused on menswear. The museum previously hosted the "Bravehearts: Men in Skirts" display between November 2003 and February 2004.

After being turned into a couch meme at her very first Met Gala the year prior (more on that in a second), Kardashian chose to play it safe for the 2014 theme, "Charles James: Beyond Fashion." 

Alber Elbaz designed her custom Lanvin gown, which featured a black satin belt and a thigh-high slit. 

The gown was undoubtedly pretty and would've looked great for a movie premiere or awards show, but it was nothing special for a night that encourages celebrities to push the envelope.

Kardashian's ensemble was actually supposed to look completely different. She revealed on her now-inactive website that the gown was originally made of "this amazing leather with metallic detailing." Her design team only decided to redo it in blue satin at the last minute.  

Kardashian still planned to pair her new gown with a chunky belt and leather cuffs, but she ditched them before walking the red carpet because, according to E!, they were "a bit too rock 'n' roll."

As a Met Gala novice, it was clear Kardashian didn't want to rock the boat too much on the carpet. Still, we wish we could've seen the far edgier look she envisioned in 2014.

Kardashian wore a metallic silver Balmain gown with a thigh-high slit for the "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology" theme in 2016. 

We loved the fabric of the silver dress, and Kardashian took a bit of a risk with her beauty by bleaching her eyebrows. However, the look didn't stand out among a sea of similar metallic looks. 

Kardashian was also overshadowed by her date, then-husband Kanye West. The rapper made headlines that year for daring to wear denim to the Met Gala. 

When looking back on her Met Gala looks in 2019, Kardashian revealed that she felt insecure ahead of the event because she hadn't "lost all of my baby weight" after giving birth to her son Saint in December 2015, which is likely why she stuck to her usual silhouette.

The "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination" Met Gala will likely go down as one of the boldest in the event's history. Stars like Rihanna, Ariana Grande, and Blake Lively delivered stunning looks referencing everything from the Pope to the Sistine Chapel. 

Because of all the eye-catching looks, Kardashian didn't make waves with her custom gold Versace dress, although the number did nab her a few spots on best-dressed lists. 

Kardashian personally designed the chain-mail gown with Donatella Versace, and we loved the dark eye makeup and high pony she paired it with.

While the reality TV star hadn't yet mastered how to steal the show at the Met Gala, her style was definitely becoming a little bolder.

At first glance, Kardashian's off-the-shoulder white dress for the "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between" theme might seem even simpler than the gowns we've already discussed. 

But the chic and beachy outfit, which Kardashian paired with sandals and minimal makeup, felt like a statement from the reality TV star. On a night when everyone would dial it up and go avant-garde, Kardashian decided to do something completely different — and it worked. One headline praised Kardashian's "seriously toned down" look.

"I figured everyone was going to go really over the top, and I just wanted to be really simple," Kardashian, who attended the event without West for the first time, told Vogue on the red carpet.

The 2017 Met Gala also happened just a few months after Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in Paris, and $11 million in jewels were stolen from her hotel room. The simple Vivienne Westwood dress and her lack of accessories felt like a statement from Kardashian, who later discussed the trauma she experienced from the robbery.

For the 2025 Met Gala, Kardashian opted for an all-black two-piece set from the Los Angeles-based brand Chrome Hearts.

The bodycon ensemble featured a daring low-rise skirt, a wide-brimmed fedora that felt reminiscent of Carmen Sandiego, and a pearl chain belt.

While it was a visually cool outfit and felt like a fresh vibe for Kardashian, it just didn't make much of a splash on a night filled with beautiful, bold suits in regal colors.

Kardashian wore a custom John Galliano dress to the "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" gala, which had a "Garden of Time" dress code.

Kardashian's look leaned into the garden aspect of the dress code, though it clearly had a through-line to her previous Met Gala looks as well.

Like dresses she wore in previous years, the gown was metallic and featured a dramatic, waist-cinching corset. Floral detailing adorned the strapless bodice, while the floor-length skirt was made of interlocking, floral appliqué that showed peeks of Kardashian's legs. Her blond hair added to the edgy feel of the look.

The gown was well suited to the theme, but the gray shrug Kardashian wore atop looked disjointed with the rest of the look. The outfit would have been stronger if Kardashian had let the dress speak for itself.

Designed by Peter Dundas, the dress was covered with strategically placed crystals and featured a long train of white feathers. Kardashian revealed on Instagram that her inspiration had been Cher's iconic 1974 Met Gala outfit.

Other naked dresses were popular on the red carpet that year. Stars like Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez won praise for their sheer numbers, and Rihanna had the most standout look of the night by upstaging everyone with her custom Guo Pei gown — now one of the most iconic Met Gala looks of all time. 

But Kardashian's gown was bold, stunning, and told a story. It was the first inkling of her realizing she could become a force on the Met Gala red carpet.

Kardashian arrived at the "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty" Met Gala in a Schiaparelli gown made almost entirely of pearl strands.

The strings of pearls created a halter-style bodice and barely-there skirt, which sat atop taupe shapewear.

Lagerfeld often gravitated toward pearls in his designs, making the ensemble an apt choice for the ball. However, the look also referenced Kardashian's 2007 Playboy shoot, for which she posed only wearing pearls, so it made even more of a statement.

Kris Jenner said her now meme-ified comment, "You're doing amazing, sweetie," to Kardashian during the shoot, as captured on "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."

Kardashian also celebrated her Skims empire with the shapewear she wore under the pearls, using the Met Gala as a platform for her own success. The company was worth $3.2 billion as of 2022.

Kardashian arrived in the most jaw-dropping look of the night at the 2021 Met Gala with the theme, "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion." Her Balenciaga bodysuit and oversized T-shirt dress covered her from head to toe, including a face-covering mask and gloves.

She was only visible in silhouette, with her ponytail and a train flowing behind her as she walked the Met Gala carpet.

It was an instant meme because of its avant-garde nature. Still, Balenciaga's creative director, Demna Gvasalia, later explained that the outfit was designed to highlight how iconic Kardashian's body had become in pop culture. 

"People would know instantly it was Kim because of her silhouette. They wouldn't even need to see her face, you know?" Gvasalia told Vogue at the time. "And I think that the whole power of her celebrity, that people wouldn't need to see her face to know it's her."

Kardashian arrived at the "Camp: Notes on Fashion" gala in a Thierry Mugler gown that hugged her figure and was adorned with crystals. The dress appeared sheer, as it matched her skin tone.

After the gala, Kardashian revealed she went to extreme lengths to wear the skin-tight dress, including taking corset lessons to breathe in it.

She also couldn't go to the bathroom in the dress, and in a clip from "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," she said she was willing to urinate on herself in the gown if there was an emergency. 

The dress was pretty, but Kardashian's drastic measures made the dress so memorable.

Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in 2013 when she was expecting her first child, North West. 

The gala's theme was "Punk: Chaos to Couture," and Kardashian wore a long-sleeve, floral Riccardo Tisci dress. It had a high neckline, which contrasted with its daring, thigh-high slit. Matching, open-toe shoes completed the look.

Kardashian told Vogue in 2019 that Tisci wanted the floral pattern to symbolize sending a pregnant woman flowers, which she said was "such a sweet message." Tisci also told Kardashian that Anna Wintour wanted her to wear the floral dress, so she did.

Social media users immediately took to Twitter to criticize the look after Kardashian walked the red carpet. Many compared the dress to a couch, to the star's dismay.

"I was crying, like, the whole way home because I just couldn't believe it," Kardashian said in the same interview with Vogue.

Looking back at the dress, Kim has a different perspective. "Now I love it," she told the magazine. "Now it's, like, sick."

Although it wasn't for the reasons she wanted, Kardashian was the talk of the event from her very first Met Gala, which was even more impressive considering she was attending as Kanye West's date.

Kardashian made headlines when she arrived at the 2022 "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" Met Gala in the dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

The sheer Jean Louis dress was embellished from head to toe, and Kardashian dyed her hair platinum blond to fully recreate Monroe's look.

"In a sense, it's the original naked dress. That's why it was so shocking," Kardashian told Vogue of the gown.

She borrowed the dress from Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum in Orlando, which acquired it for $4.81 million in 2016, according to a Ripley's press release. Kardashian wore the gown on the red carpet, but she changed into a replica immediately after because it was so fragile. 

Kardashian once again took extreme measures to fit into Monroe's dress. She said she lost 16 pounds in three weeks so she could wear it. 

The conversation around the dress continued for weeks after the Met Gala, as people accused Kardashian of damaging the gown when she wore it.

In June 2022, Ripley's and Kardashian sent Business Insider a joint statement saying she "did not, in any way, damage the garment in the short amount of time it was worn at the Met Gala." 

Kardashian solidified her status as the Met Gala it-girl with her Marilyn Monroe look, which was truly a once-in-a-lifetime fashion moment.
