New mission for longtime Trump ally and friend Herschel Walker

18 December 2024 at 05:11

President-elect Donald Trump has a new game plan for Herschel Walker, his longtime friend, ally and former football star.

Three years after Trump handpicked Walker to run for the Senate in his home state of Georgia in a crucial, combative, expensive and high-profile Senate race, the president-elect is now selecting his friend to serve as the U.S. ambassador to the Caribbean nation of the Bahamas.

"Herschel has spent decades serving as an ambassador to our nation’s youth, our men and women in the military, and athletes at home and abroad," Trump said in a statement Tuesday night on social media, as he pointed to Walker's resume, which includes serving as co-chair of the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition during Trump's first term in the White House.

HERSCHEL WALKER PROVES THAT IT'S NEVER TOO LATE

Walker is a former professional and college football star running back who won a Heisman Trophy and helped propel the University of Georgia to a national championship.

His friendship with the former and future president goes back to his days playing for the Trump-owned New Jersey Generals USFL football team in the 1980s. Walker also was a major Trump supporter and surrogate in the 2020 presidential election.

In August 2021, Walker launched a Republican Senate campaign in Georgia after months of support and encouragement from Trump to run for office.

Walker, a first-time politician, was dogged during his Senate run by controversial statements and damaging revelations about his personal life and business career.

The race between Walker and Democratic incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock ended up being one of the most closely watched Senate battles in the 2022 midterms. The contest went into overtime, with Walker ending up narrowly losing to Warnock in a runoff election in December of that year.

MEET TRUMP'S CABINET AND OTHER TOP ADMINISTRATION PICKS

This year, Walker joined Trump on the campaign trail in Georgia days before Election Day, as the former president carried the key southeastern battleground state after narrowly losing it to President Biden four years ago.

Walker becomes the third Republican who lost a recent Senate race in Georgia to be nominated by Trump for a post in his second administration.

Former Sen. David Perdue, who lost his seat to Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff in the 2020 cycle, was selected by Trump to serve as ambassador to China, and former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who lost to Warnock in the 2020 cycle, was picked by Trump to run the Small Business Administration.

Trump's naming of Walker as ambassador to the Bahamas is the second time this month the former football star made headlines.

This past weekend, Walker graduated from the University of Georgia, 42 years after he last attended the school.

NHL could have outdoor game in unlikely location next season: report

11 December 2024 at 13:00

The National Hockey League may be having one of the game's best spectacles in a surprising part of the U.S. next season.

The Florida Panthers are reportedly closing in on hosting a game at LoanDepot Park, the home of Major League Baseball's Miami Marlins.

It'd be the first time an outdoor game would be played in Florida in NHL history β€” understandably so.

The league did host a game at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in January 2014, and Levi's Stadium in San Francisco hosted another the following year. The Cotton Bowl in Dallas was the home of the 2020 Winter Classic.

This year's Winter Classic will be held on New Year's Eve at Chicago's Wrigley Field. It will be the second Winter Classic in the ballpark, having also hosted a game on New Year's Day in 2009. Ohio Stadium, the home of the Ohio State Buckeyes' football program, is also set to host a Stadium Series game in March, featuring the Columbus Blue Jackets in their first outdoor game.

Miami would be the southernmost city to host an outdoor game β€” there is a catch, though.

YANKEES SIGN ACE PITCHER TO HISTORIC CONTRACT AFTER LOSING JUAN SOTO SWEEPSTAKES: REPORTS

LoanDepot Park's roof is retractable, so there does stand the chance that the room could be enclosed.

The league has hosted 41 outdoor games, and the Panthers have yet to participate in one.

Florida is the defending Stanley Cup champion, but it did not come easily. After leading the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 in the Finals, the opposition fought all the way back to force a Game 7, but the Panthers held serve at home to raise the Cup.

After the current season, the Panthers and the Utah Hockey Club will be the only two NHL franchises to not have played a game outdoors. The Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers are currently tied for the most outdoor appearances with six.

Dan Campbell acknowledges Lions' Dan Skipper as he vomits during impassioned postgame victory speech

6 December 2024 at 15:26

All the Detroit Lions do lately is win football games.Β

The Dan Campbell-led Lions knocked off the Green Bay Packers to secure an NFL-best 12th win Thursday night. Campbell's fourth down gambles helped lift Detroit to a 34-31 victory.Β

The fourth-year Lions head coach elected to keep the offense on the field on fourth down five times. But the fifth time in the fourth quarter proved to be the most crucial. Although quarterback Jared Goff tripped during the handoff exchange with running back David Montgomery, the Lions still managed to put Lions kicker Jake Bates in position for a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Bates split the uprights as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

A fired up Campbell addressed the team in the home locker room after the game.

"I told you you’d never forget this f------- game," Campbell said as Lions players cheered. "We don’t have to talk about how tough we are. We don’t have to talk about how resilient we are. We f------ live it man. We’ve been living it!"

PACKERS HEAD COACH, LIONS FAN SEPARATED ON FIELD BEFORE RIVALRY GAME

At one point during Campbell's fiery victory speech, he noticed Lions offensive lineman Dan Skipper was leaning over one of the locker room's trash cans. Skipper took over the Lions starting left tackle duties Thursday in place of the injured Taylor Decker.

"There you go, Skip! Keep throwing up, keep doing whatever you’re doing over there," Campbell said. "That’s a way to freakin’ lay it on the line."

Skipper delivered a solid performance, allowing just one pressure on 44 pass blocking plays.

While the Lions have won 12 of 13 games this season, the team has faced its fair share of adversity with injuries.

In October, star defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson fractured his left tibia and fibula. The injury will likely sideline him for the remainder of the regular season, but he could return to action in February should the Lions advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

"I'm so freaking proud of you. That’s the way to show up," Campbell said. "You talk about pressure? We live in pressure. That’s where we freaking thrive. You did it again. It doesn’t matter who’s playing for us. It doesn’t matter what’s going on.

"You always find a way to win. This has been in the making, man. This has been in the making. We were all supposed to be here together, man. We’re destined for this. Just stay the course."

The Lions host the Buffalo Bills Dec. 15.

Penn State snatches Big Ten title game berth from Ohio State for first appearance since 2016

30 November 2024 at 16:10

After Ohio State unfathomably lost to Michigan, the door was wide open for Penn State.

The No. 2-ranked Buckeyes would have clinched a spot in the Big Ten title game had they avoided the upset to the 23-point underdogs, but they lost, 13-10.

Penn State controlled its own destiny, and all it had to do was avoid being upset.

They did just that, taking care of business against Maryland with a 44-7 victory.

The game did not get off to an ideal start for the Nittany Lions, who fumbled on the first play of the game, then allowed a touchdown on the second. Then they scored 38 unanswered points, 28 of them in the second quarter.

Nicholas Singleton, who fumbled to start the game, found the end zone to give Penn State its first lead early in the second. After the Terps turned the ball over on downs from their own 30, it took Penn State just three plays to get into the end zone again.Β

Maryland then went three-and-out, and five plays later, it was a 24-3 lead. Penn State then recorded an interception, and Drew Allar hit Tyler Warren for a 7-yard score.

MICHIGAN'S SHOCKING UPSET OVER OHIO STATE ERUPTS INTO CHAOS AS MASSIVE BRAWL AT MIDFIELD BREAKS OUT

Singleton added another score in the fourth.Β

After Maryland's first quarter score, it either punted or turned the ball over on each of its next 12 drives, getting past midfield just twice.

Penn State will now face Oregon in the Big Ten title game next week in Indianapolis. It's Penn State's first appearance in the championship game since 2016.

The winner will receive a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff, but losing won't be the worst thing because the losing team will likely host a home game in the first round.

As for Ohio State, the Buckeyes are probably still safe, but the day has not gone how they'd hoped.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau visits Trump at Mar-a-Lago amid steep tariff threats: report

29 November 2024 at 16:07

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has flown to Florida to meet with President-elect Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club after Trump threatened to impose sweeping tariffs on Canadian products.

A person familiar with the matter, according to the AP, said Trudeau will have dinner with Trump. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc accompanied Trudeau on the trip. Trudeau is the first G-7 leader to visit Trump since the U.S. election.

The visit comes days after Trump threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico over failures by both nations to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from those countries into the U.S.Β

Fox News Digital has reached out to Trump's representatives.Β

MEXICAN PRESIDENT MIGHT BE CHANGING VIEW ON US AS TRUMP WIN SENDS WARNING TO RULING SOCIALISTSΒ

Trudeau said earlier Friday that he would resolve the tariff issue by talking to Trump.

"We’re going to work together to meet some of the concerns," he told reporters in Canada's Prince Edward Island. "But ultimately it is through lots of real constructive conversations with President Trump that I am going to have, that will keep us moving forward on the right track for all Canadians."

Trudeau said Trump got elected because he promised to bring down the cost of groceries, but now he's talking about adding 25% to the cost of all kinds of products, including potatoes from Prince Edward Island.

"It is important to understand that Donald Trump, when he makes statements like that, he plans on carrying them out. There’s no question about it," Trudeau said.

Earlier in the week, Trump said he would impose the tariffs on America's neighbors on the first day of his presidency.Β

"Right now a Caravan coming from Mexico, composed of thousands of people, seems to be unstoppable in its quest to come through our currently Open Border," he wrote. "On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders."

On Wednesday, Trump spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. He said Sheinbaum agreed to "stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States," following a productive discussion over the phone.Β

Sheinbaum had promised to raise tariffs on U.S. goods if Trump followed through with his threat.Β

Trump has previously urged Canada and Mexico to do more to prevent illegal migration into the U.S. and to combat the flow of illegal drugs, in particular fentanyl.Β

Shortly after Trump's tariff promises, Canadian officials said the country places the "highest priority" on border security.

"Our relationship today is balanced and mutually beneficial, particularly for American workers," Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said in a joint statement. "Today, Canada buys more from the United States than China, Japan, France, and the U.K. combined. Canada is essential to US domestic energy supply, and last year 60 percent of U.S. crude oil imports originated in Canada."

About 60% of U.S. crude oil imports are from Canada, and 85% of U.S. electricity imports are from Canada.

Canada is also the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the U.S., and has 34 critical minerals and metals that the Pentagon deems vital for national security.

Should Trump follow through on his tariff threat, Canada could impose retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. goods, a senior Canadian official told The Associated Press this week.

When Trump imposed higher tariffs during his first term, other countries responded with tariffs of their own. In 2018, Canada announced billions in duties against the U.S. in response to taxes on Canadian steel and aluminum.Β

Daniel Jones briefly listed on Cowboys' roster; fans clamor for ex-Giant to sign with rival

22 November 2024 at 15:41

The end of an era in New York simultaneously looked like it was the start of another in Dallas.

The New York Giants released Daniel Jones Friday after six seasons. The quarterback had requested his release after being demoted to fourth string.

It's a sour end for the sixth overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, who made the playoffs just once in his Giants tenure.

With Dak Prescott out for the season, the Dallas Cowboys have been starting Cooper Rush, leaving fans begging for Dallas to sign the new free agent.

And fans briefly thought they had their wish.

For a few moments after Jones was released, he oddly had his own player profile page included on the Dallas Cowboys' roster on the team's official website.

Perhaps it was a bug because the issue was resolved quickly. But the Cowboys have not responded to a request for comment about why it happened in the first place.

Nonetheless, many still want to see the Cowboys do the unthinkable, especially considering the two NFC East rivals play on Thanksgiving.

"Jerry Jones could do the funniest thing ever and save Thanksgiving Football," Barstool's "Big Cat" wrote on X.Β

"I don't ask for much, universe. But this one is a big one. Cowboys QB Daniel Jones v. the Giants on Thanksgiving. PLEASE," ESPN's Ben Solak wrote.

STEELERS' GEORGE PICKENS GETS INTO IT WITH BROWNS PLAYER ON FINAL PLAY OF BLIZZARD GAME, HELD BACK BY SECURITY

Added NFL Network's Michael Florio, "Daniel Jones clears waivers, signs with the Cowboys and we get Dimes vs Cutlets on Thanksgiving Who says no?"

Giants team owner John Mara said the parties mutually agreed to let Jones go.

"Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future," Mara said in a statement.

"There have been some great times, but of course we all wish there had been more of those. I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. Nobody wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field and in my preparation," Jones said Thursday after his final practice as a Giant.

"Of course, this season has been disappointing for all and, of course, I wish I could have done more. I'm 100% accountable for my part. I did not play well enough consistently enough to help the team get results."Β

Jones, less than two years after signing a four-year, $160 million deal, leaves the Giants with a 24-44-1 record in the regular season and 1-1 record in the playoffs.Β
